High Rise Residential Tower Under Construction $60M with DJRD Architects

Once completed, the 19 storey building will hold a mix of 1,2 and 3 bedroom apartments with generous areas above, with a mixture of retail stores below. One notable feature will be the landscaped pool deck at the top of the podium level. The building is a strong, extruded form that anchors itslef at ground level. The vertical form acts as a strong iconic market to announce the Bond Junction CBD Commercial precinct.

Domino UTS Student Housing Harris Street, Ultimo, NSW

University of Technology Sydney 2011 $72M Lacoste + Stevenson Facade architects Nettleton Tribe Architects

The new UTS Student Housing Tower rises above the existing UTS DAB Building 6 Podium. The 13 storey tower accommodates 720 student beds in a GFA of 19,200 msq. A building envelope approval for the tower was obtained when the podium was built in the late 1980s. The western faรงade overlooking Harris Street is populated with studio accommodation which provides a very regular plan across an expansive faรงade at 120 meters long. The challenge was to design a faรงade that modulated the scale, met environmental standards and presented a contemporary image. The final approval required was the Harris Street faรงade for which the City of Sydney had a review role and the Department of Planning the approval role. A precast concrete panel system had been chosen by the builder in this D & C procured building as it removed the need for scaffolding as well as for ease of construction. A series of fenestration patterns was tested for rhythm, structural capacity, glass area and composition. The preferred pattern was rationalised to be composed of 3 panel types. Each panel type was subtly coloured in muted shades of warm grey.

City Slice Commercial and Residential Tower 161 Clarence St Sydney, NSW

Multiplex Living 2002 $ 28M

City Slice is a response to a site that is surrounded by tightly knit commercial buildings up to podium level, above which it transforms to a residential tower. The apartment tower has a regular and slender form reflecting the narrowness of the site. It is patterned with wrap-around perforated aluminium shutters. Windows and shutters are floor to ceiling with a handrail in-between giving each room the potential to transform into a loggia. The facades on all sides are punctuated by coloured balconies. The facades are treated the same way all around, avoiding the small scale domestic impression of stacked balconies and windows; adding a single bold image on the city skyline. The apartments in the tower are oriented towards the north. Cross ventilation is achieved in most of the apartments. The commercial floor space has generous floor to floor heights of 4m and a floor plate that can be divided into two. The offices have an external frontage to the courtyard light-well and also have potential for natural ventilation.

Star Like 849-855 George + Harris Streets, Broadway, Sydney, NSW

Spurbest Pty Ltd 2003 Competition Entry $ 21M

The intersection of Broadway and Harris Street is acknowledged as the western gateway to the Sydney CBD. The challenge of this competition is to form one side of the city gateway and complete the strong line of buildings along Harris Street (ABC headquarters, UTS Design School). The tower is sharp in form and material. The copper-green polished precast concrete panels are shiny and reflect light in varying ways. The building concludes the line of the Harris Street buildings. It is a form that is appealing from all angles as it cannot address just one street or another; it must be viewed from many vantage points. The “star-like plan form is a response that enhances the irregular building envelope. The plan form of the tower allows all the apartments to be cross ventilated and the faceted facades generate multiple views and different outlooks for each dwelling.

Built Envelope Mixed Use Building 205 Ben Boyd Road Neutral Bay, NSW

Huntingales Properties Pty Ltd 2004 $750,000 The client had great expectations for this small 73 sqm site, seeking to maximize the development and build a landmark building that was to become his headquarters and also contain a small cafe and a apartment. The corner location of the site on a main street and a small residential lane subjected it to two very different council regulations that limited the development to an odd triangular shaped building diminishing the useable floor area. The approach was to combine two disparate building envelopes generated by different height planes; the building was to present a formal faรงade to the main street, which meant breaking the height plane, and then gradually taper towards the rear boundary. The result is a uniquely shaped building that is a building envelope.

Cut-out Duong Ben Chuong Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Saigon Apartments 2005

A multi-storey residential development in a developing area of inner Ho Chi Minh City had the challenge of an awkward site with an irregular boundary. The width of the narrow site was too deep for a single apartment and too narrow for two. Taking the ideal apartment depth of 15m as a constraint, the apartments were effectively subtracted from the mass of the site area. An irregular shaped block of five wings was created; ensuring aspect and amenity were provided to every apartment.

High Rise Apartments 2004

Located in central Saigon, the demand for this type of apartment building reflects the growing Vietnamese economy and its global connections. The 12-storey building comprises 64 apartments with the ground floor given over to retail and the lobby. The apartments are generously proportioned with accommodation for a housekeeper. The faรงade is articulated with projecting rooms and water gardens at windowsill height. the edges and floor level, reflecting the sky and the trees, to clear glass where light and views enhance the activities within, also providing views out and gentle southern light for the library users.

The University of Technology Sydney is an urban campus housed in a collection of buildings located around the southern edge of the Sydney CBD. The Campus’s most prominent building is the UTS Tower off Broadway. Built in the 1970’s to celebrate the creation of the university, it is an exemplar of the Brutalist movement in architecture. The existing entrance podium to the tower is set back from the street, with a large public terrace at the front that is rendered unusable by windy, noisy, polluted and shaded conditions of its Broadway location. The Podium Extension is built in front of the existing podium to the street edge, providing protection from the street and an active street frontage that accommodates contemporary multi-media venues and events. The new program includes a 600 seat lecture theatre, 150 seat cinema, mediateque, bar, exhibition areas, café and bookshop. The Podium Extension is a unique opportunity for UTS to re-image the entry to its most prominent landmark, and in doing so re-image the University itself.

Like a Landscape Shellharbour City Hub Cygnet Avenue Shellharbour, NSW

Shellharbour City Council 2013 - 2017 Completion Due May 2017 $46M in association with DesignInc The vision for the Shellharbour City Hub is to provide an open and inviting community building integrated with the new public square. To support this vision, community uses embrace and activate the new civic square strategically located at the busiest corner of the site. Also, to enhance the community ownership of this major public facility, the architecture is a subliminal representation of the surrounding landscape. The public face of the building is represented by the Library addressing College Street and the Civic Square with an undulating roof form. The taller Council administration building is set back and addresses Cygnet Ave as a separate form. The Auditorium, also a separate form from the south-west, addresses the Civic Square with the Council Chambers set behind and adjacent. Wrapping around the public square is the Community Lobby, a five metre high ‘spine’ linking the Library, Museum, Auditorium Foyer and Council’s Customer Service Desk is designed to function as a community lobby activating the Civic Square. The Auditorium and Council Chambers forms a central element between the Library and the Council Administration building of the Shellharbour City Hub.

Barcode Recall Document Storage Warehouse Greystanes, NSW

Goodman 2006 $20,000,000 Barcode is a storage facility on the outskirts of Sydney for Recall. It’s scale is truly impressive as the tallest industrial shed in NSW at the time. With 27m of clear storage space, it covers the area of two football fields and is large enough to house 6 jumbo jets. The facility holds 6 million A3 archive boxes which are stored and retrieved on a semiautomatic racking system that can operate in darkness with localised light. The key to managing such a huge archive is the barcode. Each box gets assigned a barcode which identifies the owner, the contents and location of the box. As the key to the whole operation, the barcode was taken as the driving concept for the image of the building; a giant barcode of black and white stripes is folded over the facades and roof of the building. The pattern is intended to give scale to the facility which is twice that of the neighbouring buildings as well as providing an identity to what would otherwise be a large, anonymous shed.

Office Wrap Port Botany Industrial Estate 6 Industrial Units Military Road Matraville, NSW

CBD Prestige Property Holdings Pty Ltd 2000 $4,500,000 Port Botany Industrial Estate, comprises 6 strata office/warehouse units developed for light industrial activity, storage and distribution. Located near a residential area, the warehouse activities could have been a noisy and unsightly addition to the suburb. To mitigate the effect of this program the development is arranged around a ‘U’ shaped service courtyard from which trucks have access to the warehouses. Offices are located on the outer perimeter of the building effectively wrapping the development and providing an ordered and mannered street presence. This is further enhanced by a 10m landscaped setback from the street. Brightly painted stairs articulate the office entries and provide a rhythm to the lengthy horizontal street façades.
