LA DE DA EDITORIAL CREDITS

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Finally, the winter issue is released and we have some amazing editorials to warm our hearts and emblazon our creative spirits. The editorials this issue range from chic and clean to dark and mysterious, elegant beauty to artsy intrigue. This time we interviewed three up and coming independent designers from all over the world. This includes Marko Potkozarac Fehér, a Bosnian design student, and first place winner in “Perwoll New Generation” competition during Nivea BH Fashion Week April 2014, held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, beating out over 200 competitors. His work incorporates both androgynous, minimalist, and futuristic styles, utilizing eco-leather as his primary medium. Lydia Perez of Flor de Lata, is an accessory designer based in Orlando, FL who really has a passion for upcycling. She creates interesting and edgy handbags and accessories made out of recycled materials. Sara Mena, of Mena’sera, is a women’s apparel designer based in Los Angeles, CA who gets inspiration from the past’s classic looks and adds her eclectic touch for an update. Peter A.D. Stahl shares with us an inside look on his team’s collaboration inspired by the 50s and 60s eras. The photography style, tools, and William Drummond’s vintage inspired design present quite a fascinating nostalgia. Indulge in these talented artists collaborations in the following pages! As always, we invite you to follow and interact with us on social media!

LDD: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what got you started in design? Sara Mena: I'm originally from the Bay Area but I've lived in Los Angeles for 6 years. I love the culture here and the fast paced environment. It keeps me inspired. I started sketching and sewing in high school and haven't stopped creating since. What is special about your designs and makes them stand out? I take classic pieces and add modern twists for today's woman. Mixing prints with prints in interesting ways. Making the modern woman feel sexy and confident. What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design? Having everything come together in the end, and seeing it all together. The end product. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? Making the customer feel great in what they’re wearing. Hearing those three words: "I love this. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show? Any special rituals? I'm a horrible procrastinator. I procrastinate what I can just to be sure I don't forget anything for the shoot, but with shows I'm a lot more spread out with my time. How would you define your personal style? I love wearing skinny leg color pants with oversize tops and long cardigans. I feel like I don't have to match all the time just coordinate. With that said, how would you define the style your line exemplifies? My pieces are classic with a modern twist. Where do you get your inspiration? I pull inspiration from old classic movies and music. I love watching the old classics. Who are some of your favorite designers? Diane Von Furstenburg, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, and Valentino. What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers? Once you have that momentum of creating, don't stop. Fashion never sleeps. You always have to be one step ahead. Where can our readers get their own Mena'sera designs? Visit http://www.menasera.com! Also, Mena'sera will be available to buy in-store this summer. Follow my Instagram for inspiration, behind-the-scenes, and other updates. Facebook: /menasera Instagram: msmenasera Twitter: Menasera

Brooklyn Uncertainty

104 | LA DE DA www.ladedamag.com

A wild fascination with the ‘50s and ‘60s and the role women played in society at the time inspired Photographer Peter A.D. Stahl, Model Emily Opper, Designer William Drummond, and Hair and Makeup Artist Alegra Titus, in this Park Slope Brooklyn-based collection. Born and raised in Manhattan, submerged in an urban environment, Emily makes this collection particularly poignant. Her personality stands out among the row houses and sprawling parks. The clothing is created by William Drummond. Originally from London, William moved to New York to study at FIT and Parsons. This collection is closer to the classic side of his aesthetic, though focused on the use of fabrics that look simple yet, upon closer observation, differ from the norm. The pink dress is made of malleable foam that springs back when released (including a trip tightly packed in luggage from England), and the fabric with the sheen is made from a high gloss plastic, allowing for a uniquely subtle translucent property. Shot on Kodak Tri-x film for the black and white; a stock that

took hold in the 1950s, and captured most of the moments of that time as a very well loved photojournalist film. To juxtapose the black and white, Kodak’s Portra, a modern color film, was used. This film maintains the great dynamic range that is found in vintage film stocks, inspiring a feeling of immersion into the past. Peter’s personal aesthetic is photojournalist/street photography while still being fashion in subject. He pushes his imagery to be more truthful; telling a story, caught in a moment. All these styles were paired with Alegra Titus’s expertly styled hair and makeup, creating a successful illusion and stepping back in time to a less than happy 1950s housewife. She is a little bored and a little ambitious, in an overstated and remarkably rough time for women with a modern twist. LDD WINTER 2015 LA DE DA | 105

A plethora of talents reside in La De Da’s home state of Florida, but no one stands out quite like designer Lydia Perez of Flor de Lata. Eco-conscious brand Flor de Lata creates environmental awareness through modern accessory design. Perez takes upcycling to a whole new level in her accessories by creating new textiles from items that would normally be recycled or even thrown in the trash. 112 | LA DE DA www.ladedamag.com

LDD: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what got you started in design? I'm currently residing in Orlando FL, and I started designing about 30 years ago when I took interest in becoming a seamstress while I lived in Puerto Rico. I remember I had started cosmetology school, and next to my school there was a school teaching sewing and design. I immediately knew that was what I was destined to do, and after only being in school for a week, I immediately quit cosmetology school and enrolled in the Fashion & Design Program next door. What is special about your designs and makes them stand out? My designs are special because I don't waste resources to make them. I'm using recyclable materials so that we can conserve our environment. My designs are made out of either aluminum can pull tabs, cans and recycled plastic. Never throwing anything away, just repurposing everyday items, and not letting anything go to waste. What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design? My favorite part about coming up with a design is thinking, “How can this piece be useful? I make pieces not only for their great looks, but how useful they are to the person. I like to come up with new ideas that are different and not necessarily a current trend. My favorite part is actually seeing the final results. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? What matters to me most as a designer at the moment is trying to create awareness, such as finding a way to help the environment, while you can still look trendy and make a difference. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show? Any special rituals? I'm a perfectionist, so before a fashion shoot I have everything organized down to the way that I am going to pose my items. My daughter is a fashion photographer, so she is my go-to person whenever I need to prepare for a fashion show or shoot; she helps me organize everything. How would you define your personal style? My personal style is varied but I like to think it is a mix of classic, modern, and boho chic. With that said, how would you define the style your line exemplifies? I think my line exemplifies a modern approach to handbags and accessories. I like to think that this should be the future of fashion: instead of wasting our resources we should reuse them. I think my line caters to both the younger fashionistas and the more mature crowd. I believe my line offers something to everyone regardless of style. Where can our readers get their own Flor de Lata designs? You can get our designs at our online store at www.Flordelata.com. Be sure to check out their website and connect with Flor de Lata on social media! Facebook: /flordelata.lpc

The resilient textiles and clean lines in each garment in Marko Fehér’s latest collection, “Ice Machine,” perfectly parallel the designer’s design ideologies and cultural experiences. In this interview we learn about how and where he finds inspiration. Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what got you started in design? I am Marko Potkozarac Fehér, born and raised in Bosnia. My interest in design came at a young age, and I find clothes and inspiration in everything around me. What is special about your designs and makes them stand out? I don’t design only to sell. I design to show how I think and what I like and desire design to be. Being in the 21st century, borders mean nothing good, so why should there be borders between gender and fashion? I decide to be more androgynous or futuristic with women’s design. What’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design? My favorite part is the moment I get an idea or inspiration to create. Sometimes it’s hard, and sometimes it comes so easy to mind. 116 | LA DE DA www.ladedamag.com

What matters to you most as a fashion designer? In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are not enough fabric options, and the industry is not so good, so there are no public resources for young designers, artists, etc. I wish there was more support. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show? Any special rituals? The day before a runway show, I always change something. It’s not really a ritual, but I like it when I do that because in that moment I am able to add something new that is better. How would you define your personal style? Black. Not always black, but I can say mostly black, minimalist, and oversized… With that said, how would you define the style your line exemplifies? My design explores matters of proportion, minimalism, futurism, geometry, and simplicity but avant garde. Wearable avant garde, I would say. Where do you get your inspiration? Mostly in lifestyle, architecture, and traditions. Here in Bosnia, and in the Balkans, so many bad things have happened, and so many good things, and strange things. For me, it is always inspiring to observe the way people live here, and fight with life’s problems. continued on next page

continued from previous page Who are some of your favorite designers? Gareth Pugh. I do like the way Vivienne Westwood thinks. Rick Owens, MMM… What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers? Only one [piece of advice]… Don’t try to fit in, find yourself! Where can our readers get their own Marko Fehér designs? Soon an online shop will be opened at www.markofeher.com!
