HAIR FLORA This summer, the floral crown trend continues to go strong. Sexy siren Lana Del Rey is largely responsible for bringing this look to the masses, but if you’re still lost on the how to wear it, look no further. We love the hippie inspiration behind the look, so invoke your bohemian spirit and read on. Of course, this look has been around for as long as flowers have been around, so it’s no surprise that there are a myriad of ways to wear it. Upon first glance, pretty petals in the hair evoke femininity and grace, but they can be styled to create sexy, funky, or bohemian looks. Even if you’re wearing a demure ringlet of buds, flowery hair is a statement. Pull off the look by wearing a no-fuss hairstyle, like textured waves or a messy topknot. The contrast of bright, colorful, and pristine flowers against tousled hair keeps everything modern. Model Perrin (left) poses with a sweetly askew crown of baby’s breath and small white rosebuds. The asymmetry and perfect imperfection make it look effortless.

Try...

For the crafty set, floral crowns are an easy DIY project. I personally prefer the look of fresh flowers, as petals fall into the hair throughout the day and create a more romantic style, but silk flowers are also a great durable option if you’re off to a summer music festival. Use this stepby-step guide and experiment to make your own floral crown.

SUPPLIES: Green floral wire, floral tape, flowers (fresh or silk), and wire cutters or scissors

1

FOR A STURDY WIRE BASE CROWN, USE ONE PIECE OF WIRE TO MEASURE OUT YOUR CROWN. IT WILL VARY ON PLACEMENT ON YOUR HEAD. WRAP THE ENDS AROUND ITSELF TO CLOSE THE CIRCLE. YOU CAN ALSO MAKE A BASE THAT IS HALF OF YOUR CIRCUMFERENCE, AND USE RIBBON TO CLOSE THE ENDS.

2

USE GREEN WIRE TO WRAP GREENERY AND LEAVES AROUND YOUR BASE. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL CROWN, ASIDE FROM BEING CREATIVE, IS TIGHTLY WRAPPING THE WIRE.

3

NOW COMES THE FUN PART—ADDING FLOWERS! FOR FRESH FLOWERS, YOU CAN MAKE SMALL BUNCHES OF 2-4 FLOWERS WRAPPED WITH WIRE AND FLORAL TAPE, THEN ADDING THE BUNCHES WITH WIRE TO THE BASE, OVERLAPPING SO THAT NO WIRE IS SHOWING. ANOTHER METHOD IS TO CUT THE STEMS OFF YOUR BUDS AND POKE FLORAL WIRE THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE. USE THE REMAINING WIRE TO SECURELY WRAP TO THE CROWN. DO THIS WITH EACH FLOWER. KEEP IT TIGHT!

4

USE FLORAL TAPE TO COVER EXPOSED WIRE AND SHARP EDGES. CHECK THE FIT AND MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS NEEDED. NOW DRESS IT UP!

...or buy! If you’re on the go or lacking a green thumb, you can always buy a beautiful crown and style it your own way. Crowns come in different price ranges for every boho girl’s budget.

CULT GAIA MIDNIGHT CROWN $88 URBAN OUTFITTERS FLOWER CROWN $18

BERRY FLORAL CROWN $26

SIZING UP

Consider the scale of your crown when deciding how to wear it. Big blooms are the ultimate statement, but a petite crown of tiny buds and leaves can be a great unexpected touch to an edgy outfit.

OFF TO A DAY AND NIGHT MUSIC FESTIVAL? WEAR A CROWN WITH A CROPPED TOP, SIMPLE JEWELRY, AND CUTOFFS. FOR A SLEEK, MODERN LOOK, USE A COLORFUL CROWN TO PUNCH UP A TAILORED TOP AND MAXI SKIRT. AND OF COURSE, A BOHEMIAN PEASANT BLOUSE OR TUNIC IS ALWAYS A GREAT GO-TO WITH A SUMMER CROWN.

THIS COLUMN: J. CREW EMBROIDERED SCALLOP DRESS $138 DURANGO CRUSH SLOUCH BOOT $140

TOPPLED Don’t be afraid to wear a crown or headband a bit more forward or backward or to the side. These details make the look your own. Keep it all in place with hair pins and bobby pins!

marlee jade collections

FEATURED DESIGNER LA DE DA's summer featured designer, Kate Dahlberg of Marlee Jade Collections, creates unique pieces inspired by the earth's natural beauty and her own personal style. Marlee Jade statement pieces perfectly complement your summer travel wardrobe. Meet Kate! Photography by Erynn Dostaler

originally from Michigan, and have lived An earlyinI'mJacksonville for almost 9 years now. My instart: terest in design started when I was pretty young. When I was around 10, I began making and selling beaded bracelets to all my mom's friends, most of them very colorful and eclectic… and the rest is history!

I knew I wanted something unique and that you haven't heard of yet in the jewelry biz. I wanted to incorporate something with Jade, because of its beautiful natural color. And when I was brainstorming one night, my sweet kitty, Marlee kept bothering me and then that was it, that’s how Marlee Jade Collections came about.

Naming the collection:

120

Standing out:

Almost every piece has either agate or druzy within the design. It amazes me that something so beautiful and natural comes from right here on earth. So no two pieces will ever be there same--each one is a one-of-a-kind. “IT AMAZES ME THAT SOMETHING SO BEAUTIFUL AND NATURAL COMES FROM RIGHT HERE ON EARTH.” - KATE DAHLBERG

121

The best part of the design process:

Just having fun with it! I love being able to see color and shapes and being able to put them both together to create something beautiful. If I don't love it later, I just simply go back and change it.

Being a designer:

You have to love what you do, which means you must love your work. So each piece that I design, is made with much thought, time and passion.

Prepping for

shows and shoots: Well, I work much better under pressure! So the night before I usually turn on some good music, and prep everything, no matter how long it takes, or how little sleep I get! And lots of espresso the next day!

Her personal style:

I would say my style is a little bit of everything. I tend to lean more towards something more chic and classic, adding in a great statement necklace to give it that pop, or wow factor. I also love to know what’s trending and changing at the moment, so I can switch up looks, or try something I've never put together before. 122

“I LOVE BEING ABLE TO SEE COLOR AND SHAPES AND BEING ABLE TO PUT THEM BOTH TOGETHER TO CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.” - KATE DAHLBERG

Her inspiration: Nature. I'm obsessed with natural beauty and color!

Favorite designers:

I really don't have any specifics, I just love the not-so-mainstream designers. The unique and one of a kind finds. Those are my faves!

Marlee Jade style: Words of wisdom: You have to believe in your work. Doesn't matter what anyone else says, if you

I try and exert my personal style within my line as much as possible. I don't design anything I won't wear. I try and keep a good variety of simple, beautiful pieces, something that could be layered or worn alone and not so overdone. But then I love a good statement piece that sparkles and stands out.

love your product, you have to stand by it! Most importantly, be your creative self!
