Though from a small town, designer Lydia Siyufy creates garments that make big and bold statements. Her inspiring confidence stems from her own personal battles and empowers everything behind her brand.

LDD: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what got you started in design?

I’m from a super small town in central Florida that many people know of and when they hear me say “Ocala” they make that face like, “Oh…” I don’t know how we got such a rep but it’s actually a cute town.

We are known for our large horse farms and good ol’ boy lifestyles: everyone-knows-everyone type of thing.

My family strayed away from the equestrian life. I was born into a world of business with a father in investments, a mother who managed real estate, and an older sister who conquered the finance world by the age of 24. As you can imagine, I’ve spent my entire life watching them, perfecting techniques to represent myself as professionally as they did. So when I was young I found fashion was a great way to fit in for me.

This was such a huge part of my life because I was born with a rare vascular anomaly called Lymphatic Malformation. You can learn more about this condition by visiting www.ccakids.com. You may have also seen something similar in the 1985 movie MASK starring Cher. Frankly, it’s a condition that is not truly understood nor easily accepted, so becoming socially acceptable was a huge battle and triumph for me.

However with or without an anomaly, I found that many women struggle with all aspects of appearance and self-worth. Throughout my life, many women expressed appreciation for the boldness of my chosen attitude towards life. Eventually, I recognized the opportunity I had to lead by example, and I grew very passionate about finding an outlet to do so during college. That’s when I decided to design a line that could radiate my message of encouragement.

LDD: What is special about your designs and makes them stand out?

As a modern businesswoman, everyday is a commitment to represent yourself accordingly to be noticed, yet respected. We specialize in designing investment pieces that help women build lasting wardrobes and facilitate success.

Just like an expensive car stands out, our garments are bold, daring, and filled with quality. We like to add specific signature details, like our diamond buttons. Each of those details has a role that involves inspiring the woman inside the garment to be confident in the moments she may need to most.

Our clothing is designed around the real woman: her shape, her insecurities, her needs, and her desires for acknowledgment. We fill needs by helping women portray drive, potential, and femininity all in a single garment.

LDD: What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?

The possibilities of new beginnings:

I love the idea of beginning something new because it’s almost a process of internal self-improvement each time. It’s scary but worth the triumph.

LDD: What matters to you most as a fashion designer?

Making a difference. I want to be an example. My clothing is so much more about the women that will wear it than the garment alone. Although the garment is extremely important, its main purpose is to be a facilitator.

LDD: How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show? Any special rituals?

I like to view all the colors of the collection in different ways and in different settings so that I can best visualize what I'm about to do. I lay them out in different manners and enjoy the architectural thought of how they can come together.

LDD: How would you define your personal style?

Try to imagine a mix of Jackie Kennedy meets old school Hollywood glam. At any given time it can be from one extreme to the other for me.

I love the classic look of the first lady. She’s the ideal woman and she’s sexy purely because of her graceful conduct. I also love the diamonds and glam of old Hollywood. Sometimes it just feels good to truly enjoy yourself and I believe that’s extremely important for women to do internally, within ration of course.

LDD: With that said, how would you define the style your line exemplifies?

My line exemplifies my personal style exactly but with more emphasis on career-oriented styles. Imagine higher necklines and appropriate lengths. Styles that compliment you whether you’re in a board room 24 stories up standing at the head of the room or standing by your husband’s side as the lady of the house.

LDD: Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from my mother and my sister; they are the “total package” kind of women. They cook, clean, work, and remain beautifully composed through it all. Even with the battles we have been given, I have always been taught to persevere. My mother has been a seamstress way before I came along. For many years she designed and sewed the most extravagant professional ballroom gowns and costumes you’ve ever seen. She is a huge part of this company and 90% responsible for its existence. Without her influence in my life and her talents in this industry I would not be where I am today.

LDD: Who are some of your favorite designers?

I grew up with a love for Betsy Johnson and as I grew older I became more in tune with others like Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, of course Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. I believe I am more drawn to the masculine, architectural side of design. My father studied to be an architect before he became an advisor so we have his old sketches in frames throughout my parents’ home. I’ve seen them since I was little and have

always adored the thought and structure that went into their design.

LDD: What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

Life is divine chaos; forgive yourself, breathe, always thank God, remember to pray, and enjoy the ride. Doing what you love will be the scariest thing you will ever do, but it’s worth it. To begin and succeed you just need a few things: the first thing is to start somewhere, the second is be diligent, and the third thing is to never stop. The journey you are choosing will not be easy, but if it’s what you’re truly passionate about, the effort towards it will be.

Statement Pony

I

always get excited to see the hair that floats down the runways each season, hoping for some new inspiration and a few fabulous new trends to be set. Well, the Fall 2014 runway shows were giving me a case of the blahs with the same ol’ loose waves, plain ponytails, and bumped crowns that we have already seen the last few seasons. That is, until I saw what Chanel served up at their Paris show: big, bold ponytails full of texture, color, and adornments—it was love at first sight!

Hair Stylist Sam McKnight was the creative genius behind the look, incorporating braids, crimped strands, pearls, and strips of the classic Chanel tweed into voluminous ponytails. All of the scrumptious elements cascaded behind the models, while the front of the hair was simple and sleek.

While the extreme ponies on the Chanel runway might not be something you would comfortably wear yourself, let it be inspiration and spice up your Fall by converting your plain pony into a one-ofa-kind work of fashion art. Get the look with this Chanel-inspired statement pony guide.

the Statement Pony Basics: Simply start with your standard, everyday ponytail and secure it with an elastic band. Place your pony however you like: low, high or to the side. Your ponytail is the star of the show, so I recommend wearing the front area of your hair smooth and subdued.

To tame and smooth any wild little bits you have around your hairline, try the Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Paste. Take a tiny amount of this creamy pomade and rub it into your fingers, then smooth over the flyaways and those stubborn hairs.

the Statement Pony Elements:

Crimped Pieces

You will need a crimping iron for this. Just pull out a few random sections of the pony and crimp down the length of the hair. You could also use a wave iron for a smoother, alternative look.

Fabric & Leather

Cut strips of fabric or leather and secure each end under your elastic at the base of your pony. Fraying the edges of the fabric adds a nice touch. Let them hang free or create a fabric and/ or leather braid to incorporate into your fierce tail.

Simply select a few, small random sections and braid them. Done deal! If your hair is on the thin side or you want a different color, you could braid some extension hair and add it to your pony by pinning it to the base near your elastic. You can find extension hair at most beauty supply stores in a variety of colors and lengths.

Chains

Glam up your pony by dangling a necklace or jewelry making chain. While you are at it, add a charm or two to the chain for even more pony personality.

Secure the necklace or Wrap it up chain by either tucking one Finish off your amazing artwork pony by wrapping either a end under the elastic, or braid, fabric, or leather around the elastic at the base of your by using a bobby pin at the ponytail. To plump up your pony and perhaps make it a little on the wild side, use a dry volumizing product. My favorite product to use to achieve awesome volume and grip is the Big Sexy Hair Powder Play (above).

Texture

Work a texturizing product throughout the hair of your pony to give it a separated and "piecey" look. I prefer a matte-finish texturizing cream, like L'Anza Contour Fiber Cream (right).
