from the

EDITOR THE NUMBER OF THINGS THAT MAKE THE DAILY GRIND HARDER often inordinately outweighs the number of things that make it easier. So with this issue, we are celebrating those rarities that add to our joy, give us back precious time and liberate us from stress. Start with LN digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith’s Abode feature on modern smart home technology, which begins on page 26. From automated environmental control to high-definition, well, everything, she shares the plethora of options available to homeowners today that make routine tasks just a little less daunting. And then, starting on page 44 in The Daily, I myself relay the luxurious experience of flying with Jet Linx, St. Louis’ premier personal private jet company, which strives to ease travel trepidations in pretty much every way. And it’s hard not to smile at LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach’s Arts & Culture feature starting on page 52, which profiles a new exhibition centered on a beloved children’s literary character at The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum. “Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!” is a surefire way to animate your season. Whichever way you choose to brighten the gray, wintry days ahead, I hope the inspiration in this issue makes it a bit easier. All the best,

Emily Adams

Editor’s Corner The word around town

BioSTL recently welcomed a generous donation of $7.5 million from St. Louis natives Paula and Rodger Riney. The nonprofit, which aims to advance St. Louis’ leadership in solving important world challenges in agriculture, medicine, health care and technology, plans to use the funds to benefit new companies, new cures and new jobs for the metro area. “St. Louis researchers are on the vanguard of discovering and commercializing lifesaving treatments and cures, and Paula and I are delighted to support the work of BioSTL in this endeavor,” Rodger Riney states in a press release. “We are confident that this organization will use our gift to advance and benefit the St. Louis region.”

Saint Louis Ballet brings so much to our community, we could not be happier to support their spring gala! – mike lordo, co-owner of lordo’s diamonds, the sponsor of the saint louis Ballet 2020 spring gala

T

here is no question that St. Louis is a city for the arts and, in the 45 years since its inception, the Saint Louis Ballet has come to make its own mark on the metro area’s arts community. “[This is] the only professional performing ballet company in St. Louis,” says Laurie Lock, Saint Louis Ballet board member and chair for the upcoming spring gala. “We’re very fortunate to have the direction of Gen Horiuchi. He’s really grown it [in the past 20 years] to what it is today.” Lock moved from New York City, and she explains that it was the vibrant culture around the arts that attracted her and her family to St. Louis. “St. Louis is always thinking about their community,” she says. “Having a well-funded ballet is so important to our city’s cultural life.” Board president Tom Voss concurs: “We have 21 professional dancers [performing] 5 or 6 productions a year and an 18-member board. We’re on the board because we really believe that the ballet is a key thing [that] really rounds out whole arts experience in St. Louis.” Supporting the arts is a Voss family affair –his wife, Carol, serves on the board as well. The Saint Louis Ballet is also committed to bringing the art form to everyone. The Pointe to Succeed program connects school-aged children st. louis Ballet dancers | photo by tanya with professional dancers and covers everything Horiuchi, courtesy of saint louis Ballet from elements of ballet storytelling and dance lessons to introducing the children to jobs in the performing arts. Another way the company brings ballet into the community is by traveling

outside the metro area. “I’m incredibly excited about our ballet touring to rural areas that may not have access,” Lock expresses, speaking of the recent trip to Franklyn County, Ind. “[The dancers] said it was incredibly moving for them. They were told by [audience members] that they had never seen a ballet before, but were now ready to see the next.” On April 18, the Saint Louis Ballet will hold its spring gala at The RitzCarlton, St. Louis, honoring Mary Strauss. “Mary is so important to our city,” Tom Voss explains. “[Her] unwavering support through the years has been vital to the success of Saint Louis Ballet.” The elegant evening will include a performance and a chance to interact with the company. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with the dancers,” Carol Voss says. “They’re wonderful people.” Proceeds help enable the ballet to bring in live music, support dancers, and fund its educational programs. “The idea is that [through fundraising] we can continue to bring high quality performances to an ever-growing and diverse audience,” Tom Voss says. “We hope to grow this and make it special.” “The [gala’s] name is An Enchanted Evening in the Garden,” Carol Voss adds. “It’s kind of a metaphor for wednesday, FeBruary 26 the ballet; we’ve planted the 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. seeds and now it’s become a neiman marcus, Frontenac beautiful garden.”

Design Speak

Mahn Custom Homes & Renovations builds dream houses, constructs home additions and handles kitchen and bathroom remodels, as well as historic renovations. Within the last year, the Fenton-based business has expanded its team and added a showroom for customers. President Mike Mahn has been in the construction business for nearly 20 years and recently shared insight on his business’ growth with LN. What can you share about the recent expansion of your team, and what factors sparked this growth? Our philosophy has always been to have our customers not be part of a corporate structure, but to be part of a family – the Mahn Custom Home Family. With each project, our employees must always think of it as if it were their own house being newly built or renovated. With that in mind, we wanted to improve the overall customer experience without punishing our bottom line or project costs to our clients. We added to our team Kelci Krueger, who is head of design and selections. Kelci provides a rare combination of excellent construction and interior design knowledge. Kelci’s strong design software skills also allow the clients to see their visions become reality. Justin Browne was added as customer support and administration. With Justin, all of our clients

have a central person they contact with questions or concerns and who will work immediately to resolve these issues to avoid any types of delays on their project. Finally, we added Bill Spak as head of finance. Bill has many years of experience and finance expertise to handle the daily dollars-and-cents issues and allow our management team to focus on the ability to drive growth. Your team is currently working on entirely lifting a Kirkwood house for an addition. What did that involve? We love working with all types of clients, and we especially love those that are open to bold ideas. One of those clients really wanted to finish the lower level of their older home. We determined there were significant structural issues with the existing basement, and using the existing structure would result in low ceilings. So the client agreed to replace the basement underneath the existing structure. This meant lifting the house. We removed an older addition. We then lifted the home with numerous steel beams and cribbing. We stabilized the home, and then set a second set of cribbing to allow us to remove the first set of cribbing and soil in order to achieve the final basement floor grade. We squared the footings off the existing home

that was suspended 15 feet in the air. We poured new footings and foundation walls to support the existing home and new addition. Finally, we set the home down on the new foundation and removed the cribbing and steel beams. We then filled in the temporary beam pockets and secured the home to its new foundation. What inspired your company to add a showroom? Oftentimes, when dealing with custom homebuilders or general contractors, clients were forced to make key decisions based on pictures or small samples without the benefit of context or adequate comparisons. On top of that, clients were often required to drive all around town to visit certain suppliers in order to make selections. We improved this process for our clients by adding a showroom. Merging technology with the traditional tactile experience, our showroom offers a place for clients to comfortably gather the information and guidance they need to confidently make decisions about their projects.

Local experts explain how the future is impinging on the present through exciting technological advances in residential settings.

magine waking up and, with the push of a button, having your entire house wake up with you. In the time it takes to hit the snooze button, an integrated home technology system sets off a chain of commands, opening the blinds, playing music and starting the coffee maker. Modern home technology is all about accommodating unique preferences to put a house in tune with its owners’ everyday rhythms. This can encompass numerous elements, from lighting to heating and air conditioning to entertainment. Walbrandt Technologies, a local favorite in this niche, will be celebrating 10 years in business this summer and is used to constantly adapting to new developments. “Almost all of what we do involves having conversations with our client and finding out, ‘How do they like to live?’” says Aaron Walbrandt, president of Walbrandt Technologies in St. Louis. When the company began operating, people questioned the need for this type of home technology, Walbrandt says. Now, such tech has become more accepted.

It’s all these little bitty luxuries that make your life, you know, sweet and pampered in a way.

– April Jensen, ADJ Interiors

A bathroom mirror, for example, can double as a TV or smart screen for the avid multitasker. With the Séura SMART Mirror, users can watch the news or check emails while brushing their teeth. Those who enjoy entertaining can install a home theater or media room, or they can customize “scenes” that dim the lights, close the shades and turn on the perfect music playlist, setting the mood in the entire home with the push of a button. As the digital world advances, moreover, so does the home technology industry. In 2016, the global smart home market was valued at $55.7 billion, and it’s projected to grow to $174.2 billion by 2025, according to the Dow Jones online subsidiary MarketWatch. Home technology can be activated on demand or on a schedule, and it can be modified to perform a series of commands based on an individual’s lifestyle. One of the home automation products Walbrandt Technologies is using to do these things is the new Crestron Home interface. “It’s not only easy for the client to use – it’s easy for us to set up and install,” Walbrandt says, also noting that this lowers the cost of labor and makes the technology less expensive for consumers. Crestron Home allows appliances and other devices scattered around a house to work together and be controlled from a smart device, handheld remote or touch panel. It can execute multiple commands and allows homeowners to easily create their own scenes for total control of their environment. “There’s so many different ways, with programming, that we can achieve this,” Walbrandt says. “We just talked to somebody who would like to be able to, when they pull into the driveway and they open that garage door, set off a series of commands where lights are going on and alarms are being disarmed. And then conversely, when you leave and you shut the garage door, alarms are being armed and lights are going off.” Walbrandt says the home security aspect is something clients are increasingly interested in – and that goes beyond security cameras. Home automation can turn lights on and off during specified times of the day to give the appearance that someone is home, even if the owners are sitting on a beach miles away. Although voice command is a popular smart home feature, it’s also a security concern for some. Walbrandt says his company is testing voicecontrol products tailored to Crestron Home and other home systems that go beyond the capabilities of virtual assistants like Alexa and Google. “One of the inherent fears people have with these services is these internals listening to them,” Walbrandt says. “There are some voicecontrol products that we’re testing right now that are independent to your home, so they only work on your network.” In addition, Walbrandt says he and his team are working to make virtual assistants more user-friendly by creating customized voice controls on the back end. Ever ask Siri about the weather and have it call your brother? Walbrandt’s team is hoping for less of that in the future. “Voice control is still in its infancy,” Walbrandt says. “It’s getting better, and it will continue to get better.” A smart home reaches its peak when an architect, technology expert and interior designer have worked together at the very beginning of construction. Technology can be integrated into any house, Walbrandt says, but it’s easier to customize everything through initial collaboration. April Jensen, an interior designer and founder of ADJ Interiors in St. Louis, has worked with Walbrandt Technologies in the past and also recommends Fusion Media Systems and Integration Controls in the metro area. She says it’s totally doable to find technology that works well with an individual’s lifestyle and aesthetic, so she advises people to keep an open mind. “It’s all these little bitty luxuries that make your life, you know, sweet and pampered in a way,” Jensen says. “To go from nonexistent [home technology] to what we can do now – it makes the future so much more exciting.” Walbrandt Technologies, 11612 Page Service Dr., St. Louis, 314-627-0346, walbrandt.com ADJ Interiors, 2800 S. Beautiful design for busy lives informs an area resident’s classy, classic women’s clothing and handbags.

H

illary Muscatello is living the American dream. The St. Louis mom launched a women’s apparel business, Tello and Rose, from the comfort of her home last fall – and already has received more than 100 orders from clients in 30 states, four countries and three continents. Named to reference both her married name of Muscatello and her middle name of Rose, the business offers classic, classy handbags and clothing for on-the-go women who still wish to be stylish. The idea to create her own handbag started when Muscatello entered motherhood. The New England native – now with three kids, aged 6, 4 and 2 – was hunting for a classic, easy-to-clean handbag that didn’t resemble the typical diaper bag. When she came up empty-handed, the former handmade-jewelry business owner and fashion blogger decided to design one herself. “Being from the New England area, everything I design is focused on a classic and rugged lifestyle, since [my family] is outside all the time,” Muscatello says. With beautiful design for busy lives in mind, Tello and Rose’s Martha Handbag, available in black, hunter green and navy,

features flexible leather handles, durable nylon fabric and three inside pockets for convenient storage. “Since we’re from the preppy, historic New England area, where the American flag is iconic to use in design, the handbag also comes with the option of a custom-embroidered flag detail,” Muscatello notes. The durable handbag is water- and wrinkle-resistant, with a hand-washable polyester lining that flips out for convenient cleaning. “I carry the bags with me all the time,” Muscatello says. “Our most popular bag – the navy Martha Flag Handbag – I have had for over six months, and it still looks brand-new after being washed many times.” Tello and Rose has also expanded to offer women’s clothing with the Eleanor Lace Midi Caftan, available in navy. Fit for any occasion, the elegant twist on the timeless caftan features a slightly tapered waist and midi length to give wearers comfort without sacrificing style. Muscatello says the travel-friendly, wrinkle-proof dress perfectly fits everything from beach vacations to date nights to dinner parties. “It has the look of a classic caftan, but has a tapered waist, so it’s still slimming,” she says with a chuckle. “You can eat as much as you want on a cruise and still look cute. And you can wear it with or without a belt, so it’s versatile.” Coming this spring, the Eleanor Lace Midi Caftan will be available in white, while the Martha Handbag will come in a larger travel size, as well as in two new colors – white and tan. And as for what’s next for Tello and Rose, customers should look for more classic women’s apparel, including two new blouses coming this spring and summer. Tello and Rose products are available on the company’s website, on Instagram (@telloandrose) and at brick-and-mortar locations in Chesterfield, including the Jeans, Jackets & Jewels boutique and the Chesterfield Athletic Club. Customers praise the Martha Handbag as better than they thought it could be, Muscatello says, with many noting its comfort in carrying with leather handles, its lightweight feel even when holding a large load and the convenience and durability of its washable fabric. “Overall, my products are classic in their design and really easy to travel with – the Eleanor dress comes out of the bag ready to be worn, and the Martha Handbag can be cleaned easily because the inside flips out,” Muscatello says, noting that she takes pride in every product. And each time customers see the American flag emblem on Tello and Rose’s Martha Handbag, Muscatello hopes her inspirations come to mind: freedom, patriotism – and the American dream. After all, Muscatello’s living hers. “With starting my own business, the reception has been amazing, and it has grown quickly,” she says. “It’s been a blessing to be able to raise my kids and do a business like this from the comfort of my own home.”

Plant-Based PERFECTION

D

esperate to ease her son’s severe eczema, Misty Burris was struggling with the skin care solutions available on the market – so she took things into her own hands. Burris developed a line of natural, plant-based skin products. Her business, known as Mrs. B’s, came to fruition about six years ago, after more than a year of researching and studying skin treatments used around the world. Burris says the products she created improved her son’s red, irritated skin almost instantly, allowing it to heal for the first time. Burris says she grows many of the ingredients in her own garden, adding, “I don’t use any ingredients in my products that I wouldn’t feel comfortable using on my own children.” She sells the products via her website and through select retailers in the metro area. Here are a few Mrs. B’s favorites: The Pumpkin Baby Soap is Mrs. B’s most popular

product. “It was the first soap that I ever formulated,” Burris says, “and the reason I started my business.” The unscented soap helps relieve itching and irritation caused by eczema or dry skin. Burris says it’s made with homegrown organic pumpkin, which contains antioxidant vitamins A and C that soften and soothe skin, plus it boosts collagen production. Packed with face-nourishing oils, the Fresh Dawn Facial Serum is made to hydrate and restore skin. In combination, jojoba, argan and grapeseed oils provide a variety of benefits, such as reducing the appearance of fine lines and scars. The product has a hint of lemon scent, is high in vitamin E and is also useful for removing makeup. Coffee in the morning can help you thrive in more than one way. Mrs. B’s Coffee! Foaming Sugar Scrub is a three-in-one product that cleanses, exfoliates and moisturizes skin. Made with coffee from local roaster Switch Coffee Collective, the scrub works to reduce the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and wrinkles. Burris says coffee can act as an anti-inflammatory and also fights acne naturally.

The Cracked Hand & Foot Salve is set to tackle your driest skin. Roll a little of this unscented salve onto toes, heels, fingers and other tough spots, and let the coconut oil, olive oil and vitamin E work magic. Burris says beeswax in the product locks moisture into the skin, protecting it long after application. The salve is also useful for treating a sunburned or windburned face. Burris says the Activated Charcoal Face & Body Soap is for anyone hoping to be rid of acne or oily skin. The activated charcoal pulls dirt and oil from skin, clearing pores and addressing a number of skin problems. The soap’s ingredients also include tea tree oil, which fights odor-causing bacteria and fungi.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: Feature Story

ometimes, one piece is all a look needs to help its wearer stand out from the crowd. A statement necklace with just the right amount of sparkle is a seamless addition to any woman’s formal or evening attire. At Genovese jewelers, you’ll be able to find the perfect pendant for your wardrobe and lifestyle. “Typically, when people are buying medallion-style necklaces, it’s because they’re looking for something different to add to their style,” says executive buyer Katie Kelly. “We’re selling more in white gold than any other metal – it makes the diamonds pop and matches with what people already have.” Genovese’s larger pendants are most popular for formal occasions because the medallions are comprised of smaller diamonds, resulting in a glittering, eyecatching piece at an affordable price point. “You’re not paying for big stones, but still get a huge look,” Kelly expresses. “They’re one of a kind.” Genovese’s medallion pendants are a part of its Novia collection, which is exclusive to the jeweler and is personalized for each customer. “Novia medallion styles are designed in-house,” Kelly says. Customers are included in all steps of the design process, and every item of the Novia collection is created in-house as well. Although each piece is unique, the Novia medallion pendants consistently boast an intricate, filigree style. “When you’re looking at bigger statement necklaces, there is always a floral look to it,” Kelly explains. “You want it to be open and airy.” Another highlight of the house-made Novia medallions is that they can incorporate a customer’s existing stone when they choose to upgrade a ring or

necklace design. “We’ll put in the center stone and build around it,” Kelly says. “The stone stands out as an accent and has meaning to it.” With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Kelly adds that the extensive inventory at Genovese guarantees that everyone can find something for their loved one, even on a budget. “Coming off the holidays, we don’t want anyone to feel like they have to spend a lot of money,” she expresses. “There’s a wide range of items, and every [woman] smiles when they open a Genovese box. You can never go wrong.” Kelly also encourages couples at all stages of their relationship to stop in to Genovese for the holiday. “We want to touch all markets; a high school student can get his girlfriend a gift, and a couple celebrating 50 years can get a gift,” she says. “Everyone wants to say I love you, and our gifts really say that.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., St. Louis, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

arilyn Ratkin first became aware of bigotry and discrimination at age 8 while visiting her grandparents in a small Mississippi town in the ’50s. “I saw signs on water fountains that said, ‘Whites Only’ and ‘Colored Only,’ and I knew it was wrong for people to be treated differently because of their skin color,” Ratkin says. “These feelings were the beginning of my passion for pursuing social justice through volunteering.” Ratkin, a 2018 Woman of Achievement, also was honored last month with the JProStl Partnership Award, which recognizes a volunteer leader who exemplifies the lay-staff relationship through commitments to the Jewish community and the metro area. Born and raised in St. Louis, Ratkin graduated from University City High School in 1962, attended Northwestern University in Illinois and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. On graduation, she taught at Flynn Park Elementary School in University City. She eventually earned an MBA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a specialty in marketing and then worked for six years at Maritz. Right before her 50th birthday, Ratkin made the

decision to “get back into the nonprofit world” and started serving on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee. She next worked for 11 years as the domestic issues director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, where she focused on advocacy and social action projects. “This is how I learned about the nonprofit landscape in St. Louis,” she says. When she retired, Ratkin served on the Allocations Panel of the United Way, where she had the opportunity to visit not-for-profit organizations requesting funding. “National Council of Jewish Women’s mission ‘to improve the lives of women, children and families’ spoke to me, and I became hooked on volunteering after retiring from the JCRC,” she says. Ratkin remains busy as one of the five co-chairs of NCJW’s 125th anniversary. She also has a passion for early childhood literacy and has been an active volunteer for many years with Ready Readers. “Children must learn to read so that they can read to learn,” she says. At Congregation Shaare Emeth, Ratkin serves on the Committee for New Americans and volunteers at Room at the Inn, which provides dinner and sleep at different congregations in St. Louis for the homeless community.

Ratkin has lived with her husband, Gary, for 45 years in their Creve Coeur home. It was there that they raised their two daughters, who have made them proud grandparents of five. “Our children and grandchildren were taught to do something to make a difference in people’s lives,” she says. Always with a positive attitude, Ratkin enjoys meeting new people through her volunteerism, in both the experiences detailed here and many more. “It gives me a sense of purpose,” she says. “Together, we can really make a significant difference.”

S

top and smell the roses – or the coffee – or both! – at C. Oliver Coffee + Flower Bar in Maplewood. Located at 7401 Hazel Ave., Olivia Medina’s passion project, C. Oliver, opened in September. “I’ve always just been in love with coffee,” Medina says. “A little café opened in my church for high school students who needed tutoring, but it kind of fizzled out. I still wanted a shop, and I just decided, ‘You know what, I’m just going to do it! I’m going to create a space that I would want to be in for hours’ – and that’s what I did.” Medina personally designed the space to be light, airy and beautiful. “It’s a space where you can open your mind creatively and get whatever you need to get done done,” she says. “It’s just a really peaceful place to be, and that was my goal. I am a reader, and I am a writer. And I love finding spaces I can read and write and feel like I can focus. And I wanted to create a bright space – bright colors and sunlight and windows. They kind of open up your mind and allow you to just think and complete things and get stuff done.” Once the initial shock of the stunning space wears off, guests can, of course, order one of many coffee concoctions. “We are actually now with [Richmond Heights’] Coma Coffee,” Medina says. “They are awesome. We offer espresso and, obviously, batch brew.” Although Medina says C. Oliver can cure any coffee fix, the fan favorite seems to be its powder pink mocha. “It is espresso with chocolate, and then we steam it with strawberry milk,” she says. “It’s like a chocolate-

covered strawberry.” That said, her personal fave is the oatmeal chai latte. Additional offerings include magnificent macarons from La Pâtisserie Chouquette in St. Louis and a toffee bourbon cookie and almond flour shortbread from Cordial Bakery in Richmond Heights. Oh, and, of course, there are the flowers. Fresh flowers are brought in every two days from LaSalle or other local farmers, depending on the offerings.

By Alecia Humphreys

“Right now, we have a bunch of bouquets out, and those are actually selling pretty quickly,” Medina says. “We kind of cater to what’s going on seasonally.” And if you’re an Instagram user, you also might have noticed C. Oliver’s picture-perfect picture wall. “Right now, it’s a flower wall with pink tulle,” Medina says. “We switch that out every other month. We have some awesome Instagram flower walls coming up, which is going to be great.” In terms of the future, Medina says the picture wall will be popular – a dry flower wall is even in the plans – but the biggest update of note is the planned patio upgrade. “Our patio is really pretty, but it is going to be totally upgraded in this new year,” Medina says. “So look forward to the outdoor seating in spring!”

As St. Louis’ premier personal private jet company, Jet Linx offers the height of luxury travel.

R

ock stars don’t just fly from city to city – they indulge in travel experiences. They expect their favorite candy bars to be on board, their top choice of beer to be at the ready and a pillow that is just right. With Jet Linx, this treatment isn’t just reserved for the virtuosos among us – it’s the membership standard. “From the moment you join our program, we know who you are, and we know your preferences when you fly,” states National Senior Vice President Rich Ropp and Base President of St. Louis Tom Buffington. “Our facilities are fully private, and St. Louis is one of those facilities. When you show up at the gate, we’re not asking who you are – we’re anticipating your arrival. We have a full team that surrounds both your departure and your arrival back to St. Louis. No needs go unmet. The focus is totally on our clients, from the time that they arrive to the time that they arrive back home.” To fly with St. Louis’ premier personal private jet company, you must either sign up to be a member of the Jet Card program or own an aircraft that’s managed by Jet Linx. And although the plush amenities and the private, customizable experience that the company offers are appealing by themselves, Ropp and Buffington both emphasize that safety is the paramount concern of the Jet Linx team: “We have an unwavering safety standard that puts us within the top 5 percent of all providers in the private jet industry.”

44   January 31, 2020 | LadueNews.com

Jet Linx has been awarded the three highest safety ratings in the industry: Wyvern Wingman Certification, IS-BAO Stage 3 and ARGUS’ Platinum Safety Seal (a prestigious rating that less than 6 percent of private charter companies can claim). On top of that, the company employs safety personnel who report directly to the CEO, as well as three independent aviation audit companies, which annually audit Jet Linx for best safety practices. The 20-year-old company began with a single location in Omaha, Nebraska, and today has 18 locations across the U.S., a 105-aircraft fleet and more than 2,100 Jet Card members. And based on the growth plans the company has, it’s just getting started – taking off, if you will – including in the customer experience realm. “We call it ‘supply the high,’” Ropp and Buffington state. “Somebody who comes through our doors experiences such a high level of service, it almost provides them with a feeling of high if you will, or elation. We joke around and say, ‘We want to give such a great level of service, it’s actually painful for a client to ever think about ever leaving us.’ “We have a lot of guarantees in place that assure a seamless flight experience – and at this level, that’s the way it should be. Clients should expect nothing less than that.” Among these guarantees are Elevated Lifestyle, OpenSeat flight-sharing and Empty Leg programs; complimentary upgrades; preference bins that are filled with the clients’ chosen “creature comforts”; and anything that can make the flight festive or accommodating. “For special occasions, like someone flying up for a sporting event, and let’s say they’re huge Chicago Bears fans, we might go out and buy Chicago Bears paraphernalia and hang it up, not only in the lobby, but also use it to decorate the airplane,” Ropp and Buffington state. “We had a flight that was a wedding shower, and our local client service team went out and bought champagne, champagne flutes, wedding decorations and wedding planning magazines, and they had the airplane decked out with all of this, so when the bride-to-be got on board, it was quite the surprise.”

For business travelers, Jet Linx also offers valuable perks, including assistance with forming travel policies, guaranteed pricing and availability, accommodating particular cabin size and types of equipment, Wi-Fi capabilities and more. “The goal is to drill down and identify how we can help them complete their mission more efficiently,” Ropp and Buffington state. This level of service is unique to Jet Linx, even among private charter companies, Ropp and Buffington state: “Well, to be candid, the run-of-the-mill charter flights, you’re typically calling an 800 number, and you’re showing up in a more public private aviation space, with many flights coming and going from that facility. So oftentimes, when you show up, you have to search for your flight crew and find your way to the airplane, versus how things work with Jet Linx, which is a really one-on-one experience. With our private facilities, we’re able to really isolate our passengers from the masses and really give them a first-class experience.” And at the end of the day, Buffington notes that that’s what makes working for Jet Linx so rewarding, too: “I enjoy being part of a culture that empowers its local support team to take the extra steps necessary to provide the best-in-class service our customers have come to expect.” In St. Louis in particular, that quality does not go unnoticed. “St. Louis is still a handshake community,” Ropp and Buffington state. “People here do business with people they trust and who deliver on what they promise, and St. Louisans are very happy to refer business when it’s done well.” With two local locations, both at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and now at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, the word-of-mouth process has meant a great deal to this company’s success in the area. “Not all companies are created equal,” Ropp and Buffington state. “Jet Linx has been around for 20 years, and although we’re a large, national company, we deliver a personalized, tailored solution at the local level.” Jet Linx, 314-862-3222, jetlinx.com

By John Gudeman, Age 75 I was a weightlifter and pole vaulter in college and have enjoyed meeting challenges ever since. In 2006, I decided to do a million push-ups. At a rate of 300 a day, six days a week, I did it, and am working on my second million now. In 2016, 50 years after my final collegiate pole vault, I entered the pole vault competition in the Senior Olympics. My daughter Jennifer suggested I might need more than my push-up regimen to get in prime Senior Fitness, Senior Olympic-level Olympic-levelcondition. condition. She Sherecommended recommended2020Minutes MinutestoFitness, where she trained. There I could build strength safely on high-end MedX equipment and get a complete core workout with just one 20-minute session a week. And it was all done under the watchful eye of a physical therapist or other experienced fitness professional. Today, I am happy to report that Jennifer was right. 20 Minutes to Fitness was exactly the “natural physical therapy” I needed to fix an old shoulder injury and take my fitness to the next level. In my time here, I’ve increased my leg press weight alone by 100 pounds! I’ve brought home a total of 25 medals from the St. Louis Senior Olympics, including a Gold in the pole vault. I’m thrilled with how my 20 Minutes family has helped me increase my strength and athletic ability. But 20 Minutes means more to me than that. I truly look forward to my Thursday morning appointment each week. The atmosphere is always so friendly, positive and fun. I am forever thankful to my terrific daughter, who gave me 20 Minutes, which is the best gift anyone could receive. By the way: You don’t have to be an Olympian to work out here. Whatever your age and fitness level, 20 Minutes can help you build the strength you need to lead a more active life.

Your first session is free! So try it! I bet it will change your life – just like it changed mine! John Gudeman and his daughter, Jennifer

Gao says. “We saw that bubble tea in St. Louis is oldfashioned and wanted to bring new modern styles here, so we learned how to make the teas from a program in China and also found a farm where we buy teas directly.” HiTea’s dining room seats roughly 40 guests exclusive of a lounge area and front patio. Han, who studied studio art locally, carried out the interior design. The pastel pink and greenery-themed décor features her hand-painted murals of plants paired with contemporary furniture and light fixtures. From the menu, customers can choose from food options including ramen, rice bowls and appetizers. The various ramen options include lobster ramen, as well as a deluxe ramen variety that combines many of the topping selections. The specialty bowl comes

with slow-cooked beef bone broth, pork belly char siu (a popular Cantonese way to flavor and prepare pork), beef shank, large whole shrimp, ajitama (seasoned) egg, black fungus, the bamboo-based Japanese condiment menma, corn, scallion, the cured-fish paste narutomaki, bonito flakes and roasted seaweed. Additional highlights include an eel rice bowl with seasonal salad, seaweed salad, fish roe and eel sauce. Appetizer options include gyoza (pork/cabbage wontons), fried chicken wings and Cajun fried shrimp. The drink menu features such categories as fresh brewed tea, fruit tea, smoothies, flower tea, fresh milk tea, cocoa and uji matcha, a special grade of green tea. Popular beverages include Mountain High brand milk tea made with green tea; roasted oolong milk tea;

he colorful Asian eatery HiTea, which debuted last summer in Chesterfield, offers unique food and drink options with an extensive menu that includes ramen, rice bowls, bubble tea and baked goods. HiTea comes from business partners Gavin Gao and George An, the latter of whom also co-owns Dollar Express in Overland. (This makes the second HiTea; the original opened in Lawrence, Kansas, in 2017, with a third planned for Columbia, Missouri this spring. The partners also own Han Cafe in Guangzhou, China.) Gao, a native of Zhejiang, China, manages the Chesterfield restaurant with his wife, Jessie Han, who also serves as house baker. “We had this idea to offer bubble tea and cakes,”

and brown sugar boba fresh milk tea (incorporating the tapioca globules common to bubble tea). Specials include a taro milk cloud drink with hand-blended taro. All drinks come with fresh boba flavored with honey and brown sugar. Additional sweet treats include individual cake slices in flavors such as mango, matcha and the exotic osmanthus. Custom bakery orders, also available, include such options as decorated birthday cakes and crêpe cakes. “Our restaurant is a very good place for people to have meetings, chat and enjoy afternoon tea,” Gao says of HiTea, which also would make a fine stop preliminary to viewing My Name Is Asher Lev from the New Jewish Theatre. “We want people to enjoy our food and come meet their friends here.”

‌Story:  Asher Lev lives with his parents in a modest home in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s. His father, Aryeh, has degrees in political science and serves an important role in their Hasidic community by spreading their religious philosophy to new yeshivas he helps open in the U.S. and Europe. Young Asher reveres both his religion and his parents, but finds himself compelled to pursue his innate love of and talent for art. Aryeh considers his son’s gift to be largely a foolish waste of time if not out-and-out influenced by the insidious “Sitra Achra“ (the hellish “other side”). Still, with the blessing of the rebbe, Asher pursues his love of art even as his father takes an assignment abroad, leaving Asher in the care of his fragile mother, Rivkeh. Eventually, Rivkeh joins her husband in Europe, thereby freeing Asher to study art under the guidance of a secular Jewish painter named Jacob Kahn. As Asher progresses from childhood into his teens, he remains conflicted between his desire to express himself through his art and his benevolent wish to honor his strict Jewish faith. When Asher’s parents return to the U.S., he announces to them that he will be having the first public showing of his works the very next day. What he doesn’t say is that the collection comprises two paintings entitled Brooklyn Crucifixion I and II – and that his mother is the focus. How will they react to such a display? Highlights:  Chaim Potok’s highly personal and introspective study of a young artist torn between his craft and his religion is given an affecting, tender interpretation in New Jewish Theatre’s current production. Other Info:  Playwright Aaron Posner’s one-act, 90-minute version of Potok’s acclaimed 1972 novel originally was produced in 2009 in Philadelphia to critical acclaim. It was later performed by New Jewish Theatre in the company’s 2010-11 season. Director Aaron Sparks does a wonderful job of maintaining the poignancy of Potok’s story by conveying a mood that’s often sobering without being overwhelming. Spencer Sickman provides a study in stability as the pensive Asher. From his opening address to the audience, saying simply but straightforwardly, “My name is Asher Lev,” he believably walks the tightrope of fragile and conflicting emotions in the wunderkind. Amy Loui handles the roles of “The Women” in superior form, nailing each dialect and accent with precision and convincing accuracy. She melts into the fragile psyche of Asher’s loving mother and just as easily portrays the business acumen and no-nonsense approach of art gallery owner Anna Schaeffer. As “The Men,” Chuck Winning smoothly jostles

between the tough love given by Aryeh to his wayward son, then segues easily into the affable support of Asher’s fun-loving and artistically appreciative Uncle Yitzchok, Aryeh’s gregarious brother. He presents Kahn as self-assured and demanding – but also as committed to getting the best out of his young charge. Sparks’ direction and his cast’s carefully crafted portrayals movingly convey the struggles of the title character to honor his tradition without sacrificing his own personal expression. New Jewish Theatre’s rendition of My Name Is Asher Lev presents Potok’s story in all its complexity and compassion alike.

A midcounty gem dedicated to kids of all ages is going blissfully bananas.

I

t seems inconceivable that anyone would fail to feel warm fuzzies over the simian star of an exhibition now at The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum. On Jan. 18, that Kirkwood landmark opened “Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!” – and the exhibition should have children of all ages monkeying around for four full months, till April 19. Carrie Hutchcraft, the museum’s director of marketing and development, explains what, specifically, inspired the local institution to present the exhibition, admission to which comes with admission to or membership at the museum. “We’ve been very excited about our traveling exhibit lineup for 2020 for some time, but were approached with a last-minute opening in the Curious George exhibit schedule,” Hutchcraft says. “We conducted a quick survey to our members to gauge their interest level, and the results were pretty strong – they’re as excited as us to have the opportunity to bring ‘Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!’ to The Magic House! “This new exhibit introduces young children into the world of Curious George, leading visitors on a fun, meaningful interactive math-, science- and engineering-based adventure.” The much-loved anthropoid adventurer – created by writers Margret and H.A. Rey with illustrations from Alan J. Shalleck – debuted in the U.S. in Curious George in 1941, the same year as writer/illustrator Robert McCloskey’s Make Way for Ducklings and just a lustrum after The Story of Ferdinand from writer Munro Leaf and illustrator Robert Lawson (obviously a grand time for children’s literature). The merry monkey and his BFFL, The Man With the Yellow Hat, subsequently appeared in six other Houghton Mifflin Harcourt books from the Reys between 1947 and 1966, as well as various TV series and films – and now this exhilarating exhibition. “We were able to partner with another museum, the Minnesota Children’s Museum, to rent their exhibit,” Hutchcraft says. “While The Magic House creates several exhibits, this one was developed in Minnesota in partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group.” Curious (pardon the phrase) about the immersive exhibition’s components? Hutchcraft happily sketches what “Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!” involves at various museum sites in the way of science, engineering and math learning through hands-on, interactive play:

ApArtment Building

Museum guests operate wheels to move the marvelous monkey on pulleys from window to window; they also scale a faux fire escape and climb inside to play with color, light and shadow.

SidewAlk produce StAnd Guests impersonate either customers or salespeople, not only to explore the shapes of fruits and veggies, but also to sort, weigh and count produce. conStruction Site Within a munchkin construction trailer, wee visitors design a building before using machines to move construction materials and to realize different structures. city pArk An urban green space allows youngsters to rest – and to hug a full-size Curious George for photo ops. The museum’s youngest visitors can also enjoy busy wall activities designed expressly for toddlers and infants. mini golf

Pipes, ramps, funnels, turntables and bumpers let tiny patrons get in touch with their inner Tiger Woods, experimenting with physics and engineering as they putt through three holes of mini golf.

SpAce rocket The space race remains as vital as ever when junior astronauts board a rocket Curious George used to adventure beyond planetary bounds; this component of the exhibition features George in pseudo-NASA duds – with the chance for visitors to nab a selfie from the mock control station and email it to their homes. fArm A vacation to rural environs lets exhibition attendees visit a farm, where they experience cause and effect, and use wind power to move yard art such as whirligigs, windmills, windsocks and wind chimes. They also can build their own whirligigs and care for bucolic beasties. muSeum within the muSeum In this final component, museumgoers can learn about Curious George by tracing the history of the Reys’ work – including their escape from France to safety during World War II, which saved the first Curious George manuscript – and the lovable mammal’s presentation throughout the years. All in all, based on what Hutchcraft relates, potential visitors to “Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!” may well find the exhibition … well … more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
