EDITOR ‌WHENEVER OUT-OF-TOWN FRIENDS OR FAMILY VISIT, I LOOK forward to taking them on a tour of the very best restaurants, business districts and attractions in the greater St. Louis area. From the vibrant dining, nightlife and shopping in University City, the Central West End and Maplewood to local music and theater in Webster Groves and Kirkwood to the natural beauty and outdoor activities at parks like Creve Coeur Lake Memorial and Lone Elk, we’re fortunate to live in a city brimming with beautiful, thriving green spaces and neighborhoods. In this issue, we talk to families in 19 local neighborhoods, from Ladue to Clayton to Chesterfield to Richmond Heights, to learn what they love most about their communities. We also catch up with real estate agents from across the city to give home-buyers a guide to finding the perfect neighborhood for their families. Wherever you choose to call home, we hope the stories in the following pages inspire you to explore the richness and diversity that define our great city. All the best, Liz Miller, Senior Editor

ELEMENTS

NOT GOING BACK TO BLACK

T

By Robyn Dexter

he client walked into Savvy Surrounding Style in Ladue looking to refresh her Creve Coeur bedroom, which she had redone about 10 years ago. Savvy interior designer Kathleen Matthews chatted with the client about her plan for the master bedroom and learned that she wanted a more contemporary space. “She had black carpet and a big pine armoire,” Matthews recalls. “She knew she didn’t want to keep the carpet.” Matthews gave her some options and color-palette ideas. The client ended up with something totally different from her original color scheme: all beiges. “It works so well,” Matthews says. “We went with different textures in the carpet, draperies and headboard. It’s very soft and subtle and includes a lot of elements.” A challenge of working with all beiges was keeping the space interesting. Matthews and her client didn’t want the room looking bland or boring, but the textures “keep it warm and interesting,” Matthews notes. The best part of working with the master bedroom and the client inhabiting it was how open she was to new ideas, Matthews adds. “It’s a whole new look and a very big change,” she says, “but it works so well.”

Design Speak

Q&A

with Dazzle Interiors & Home Staging’s Linda Borghi

‌Everything from perfectly positioned furniture to attractive artwork and accessories can take a buyer’s breath away when stepping into a home on the market. Linda Borghi, owner of Dazzle Interiors & Home Staging, shares how home staging can boost your abode’s appeal to increase the asking price and significantly speed the selling process. Tell us about how you furnish spaces for clients and agents looking to sell homes. We always consider the demographics of the target buyer. If the likely buyer is a family, we use more comfortable furnishings, such as a large, upholstered ottoman in lieu of a coffee table in the family room, and opt to furnish one of the bedrooms as a child’s bedroom with fun fabrics. We also might feature a recreation area in the lower level with a game table and large-screen TV. If the target buyer is an empty-nester, we might recommend furnishing one of the bedrooms as an office or den rather than a second

Sellers should keep in mind that 95 percent of buyers are shopping online before making an appointment to view a home in person, so photos can be critical to driving traffic to a listing. There are many practical and inexpensive ways to improve a home’s overall appeal, such as switching out the hardware on kitchen cabinets for a more updated look and replacing dated brass light fixtures with a more current finish. Painting the entire interior in a popular warm gray tone can take any home from tired to fresh. A small investment in updates and staging can make a huge difference in the selling price. Why is home staging important for the sale of a property? Many times, buyers walk through an empty house and have trouble visualizing where to position the furniture, what the purpose of a room is, or simply whether or not a king-size bed will fit in the master bedroom. Staging takes out the guesswork and helps buyers see how a room can function. By installing

quality furnishings, it also can increase the perceived value of the home and make it appear more luxurious and welcoming. How long does it take, and what is the cost range to stage a home? Staging a vacant home is typically a two-day process and ranges from $2,000 to $15,000 – depending on the size and price-point of the home.

Home Buying How-to

By Brittany Nay | Photo by Sarah Conard

There are many factors to finding the right home for you and your family, so local Realtors share their insights for getting the most out of the home-buying search.

F

rom the award-winning schools of Ladue to the bustling business district of Clayton and the historical charm of Webster Groves to the lovely landscapes of Wildwood, the St. Louis area offers a number of notable neighborhoods for families to call home. As buyers search for their dream homes, local Realtors agree that listening to their clients’ wish lists is the best first step. “I always start by asking buyers what their wish list is, as far as location, amenities and price,” says Stephanie Oliver of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty in St. Louis. “From there, we try to prioritize what is a ‘must-have’ versus a ‘would like to have.’ There are always ‘either-ors’ in all price ranges – it’s important to know that going into the process.” Kathy Crane of Laura McCarthy Real Estate, with locations in Town and Country and Clayton, agrees that first meeting is crucial. “A first interview is important to learn more about the clients’ personalities and what is most important to them. I always listen to my clients’ needs before making suggestions.” It’s important you go into this meeting prepared with a rough outline of your priority and dream items needed for a new home. Clients commonly place neighborhood location at the top of their wish lists because of the desire to be near top-notch schools, work, hospitals and highways, as well as amenities including shopping, dining and parks. Oftentimes, buyers also inquire about the neighborhood’s marketability, lot sizes, architectural aesthetics and ages of the kids who live there, Oliver adds. As a lifelong St. Louisan who has lived in several communities, Crane helps steer clients to the neighborhood that best fits their lifestyles. Some buyers prefer an urban area or the suburbs, while others opt for even more privacy in a secluded area. Says Crane: “Providing thorough information about the local community is very important, as clients often ask: Is it a friendly and welcoming neighborhood? What amenities does it offer? How convenient is it to get around in the area? Is it safe? Is there a recreation complex? Can children walk to school? What is the average commute time?” Realtors take clients to visit different communities and mimic experiencing the neighborhood as a resident. “We provide a potential buyer in the information on the neighborhood, and drive them or have them drive through the neighborhood at different times (both day and night) and then suggest they actually talk to the neighbors – let the people who live there describe why they love to live in that neighborhood,” says Berkley Land of Land|Litwack & Associates, located in Clayton, with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate.

Realtors also gather extensive details about the type of home clients want, as different neighborhoods offer a wide array of properties. “Our conversations focus on features that are most important for the clients – number of bedrooms and baths, home size, size and condition of the kitchen and baths, and finished lower levels and garages,” Crane says. “Also, (whether) they are interested in doing any work or (if) they prefer newer or move-in-ready homes.” Land is proud to report many of its clients are still happily living in the dream homes the real estate agency helped them find. “One client in Olivette said their family loves the relationships they have formed with their neighbors and the participation with neighborhood events like block parties and progressive dinners,” Land says. “They love the overall location – being close to work, Stacy Park for their little one and Olive Boulevard, which provides access to major highways, dining and shopping, as well as a top-rated school system.” Crane agrees and says many of her clients continue to tell her how much they enjoy their homes. “One couple – downsizers, but not ready for a condo – love their home with a main-floor master,” she says. “It is close to their children and friends, and they have a small yard for gardening and entertaining. Another couple wanted an older home with lots of character and charm. We found one with an old-world flair in wonderful condition that checked all their boxes. They love their home, and the neighborhood is convenient to their work and lifestyle.” The home-buying process is an emotional one – once an agency has helped a client hone in on his or her ideal neighborhood, Oliver says the final decision comes down to how the individual or family feels about a particular property. “Most buyers narrow their search to several neighborhoods and make their choice when they walk in the home that gives them that moment of magic,” she says. ichael and Amy Huber moved to Ladue 10 years ago for the excellent schools available to their five kids; Grace, 18; Meghan, 15; Kate, 14; Gannon, 12; and Connor, 9. The Hubers have since stayed for the community and the wide range of people they have met and come to know.

Why would you encourage others to move to Ladue?

10062 Springwood Drive $899,900

9754 Old Warson $850,000

I can’t say enough about the schools; that’s the biggest draw for us. It’s a small community, and it’s tightknit. I think you get to know your neighbors. Where we live, we walk everyone to school. What we really love about our neighborhood is, it’s a great neighborhood for walking around. We spend a lot of time out in the neighborhood, walking to stores like Deer Creek Cafe. It may not be everybody’s experience in the neighborhood, but where we live, we do it a lot.

What is Ladue’s best-kept secret? My wife and I like going to Truffles on Friday nights. There’s a guy that plays music there – his name is Michael Schaerer. He was in a band (Pale Divine) that was signed with a record company, but they ended up breaking up. Anytime my wife and I see him there, we call out his originals. I’ve taken old high school friends there.

oth Julie Ettinger, owner at YLANG YLANG, and her husband, Loren Ettinger, a local attorney, resided in Clayton before meeting each other. They each adored the unique community for its mix of vibrant culture and small-town atmosphere. “We fell in love with the charm and history of the streets, neighborhoods, buildings and homes,” Julie says. “We love the eclectic community that houses professors and students to singles in apartment living and families in homes. Most of all, we love the impeccable reputation of the Clayton School District.” The Ettingers, along with their two sons, Josh, age 15, and Joey, age 12, plus two cats, Stella and Stewie, have integrated themselves into this wonderfully diverse neighborhood and are delighted to call Clayton home.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in and around your neighborhood? We love to dine at Katie’s Pizza (on Clayton Road) and Northwest Coffee. Shopping and dining at locally owned businesses are very important to us.

What are some of the best spots to meet friends? The kids love walking from school to Kaldi’s in Demun, or “house hopping,” as we call it. Since we all live so close to people we know in our neighborhood, you can easily move from one house to another. It’s usually just a walk over to someone’s house to hang with parents and their kids. I guess you could say, it’s a bit of a revolving door. That’s part of the Clayton charm – living close to your neighbors and being able to walk to school.

eeking greener pastures, the Claney family discovered Frontenac is blended open spaces with a premium location. Polly Claney, market director for VSP Vision Care, knew the neighborhood offered the ideal setting to raise a family. She and her husband, Kerby vice president mortgage banker at Stifel Bank & Trust, found the school district extra-appealing for their two children, Grace, age 13, and Lily, age 11. “We wanted someplace that had lots of green space, a good sense of community and was centrally located,” Polly says. Frontenac fulfilled those needs, making it the perfect place for the Claneys to call home.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in and around your neighborhood? We dine out at Sugo’s Spaghetteria, The Shack and BrickTop’s. We also go nearby to Lester’s Restaurant & Sports Bar.

We love our neighborhoods Town and Country

The Thompsons

By Amanda Dahl | Photos by Michael Jacob

‌H

aving tasted big-city life, Jeanette Thompson and her family sought a harbor that would bring them closer to nature without sacrificing the amenities of living near the city. Along with her husband, Nathan, a biomedical engineer, and their two children, Hannah, age 15, and Caleb, age 12, Jeanette found the remedy in Town and Country. “As a real estate agent for, coming up on, 10 years, I’ve gotten to know St. Louis really well,” she says. “I’ve seen a lot of neighborhoods, and I just knew that this was the neighborhood I wanted to move to.”

What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? We love our little neighborhood. I loved growing up in the city and having a coffee shop nearby – and we still get that here. It’s more of a suburban neighborhood in terms of family activities and traditions. It’s the opposite of living far away from everything and not talking to your neighbors. Town and Country has a real sense of community to it.

What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in your neighborhood? We’ve been exploring a lot of the county parks. I love walking in Queeny Park. Now that we’re closer, we’ve been enjoying that proximity and going on a lot of hikes.

strong sense of community and easy proximity to family and friends are what helped draw St. Louis natives Ember and Tom Shaner Jr. to Chesterfield two and a half years ago. Tom is managing director at The Private Bank, and Ember stays home with their three children, 4-year-old twins Natalie and Victoria and 6-month-old Thomas. Whether it’s a family outing at Faust Park or a date night at Annie Gunn’s, the Shaners love all Chesterfield has to offer. Ember tells us more about what to do and where to dine in Chesterfield.

What are your family’s favorite local spots? The Country Club for a casual dinner, and we love Papa Bear for yummy popcorn and candy! Some of the children’s favorite spots are the Carousel at Faust Park, along with visiting the Butterfly House. We play at Central Park and Longview Park. We love YaYa’s for kid-friendly dinner and Menchie’s for frozen yogurt afterwards.

Why would you encourage others to move to your neighborhood? Chesterfield is very family-friendly, has great schools and tons of convenient shopping. We have fun events like an annual Halloween parade and party and other neighborhood parties and social events. Everyone watches out for one another.

We love our neighborhoods Wildwood

The Murawskis

‌W

ith walkable neighborhoods and businesses nestled within wide swaths of undeveloped land and beautiful parks and trails, Wildwood was a natural choice for the Murawskis’ growing family when they moved to the area 13 years ago with 1-year-old daughter, Matty. Matt Murawski, a senior IT/sales recruiter at World Wide Technology, and Jen Murawski, an occupational therapist in Rockwood’s special school district, have since added daughters Ava, 11, and Vivian, 8, to the family. We spoke with Jen about Wildwood’s community-focused charm.

What is your favorite aspect of living in Wildwood? There is a real sense of community here. People are friendly, watch out for each other and help each other out. We love all of the parks and walking trails, and the BBQ Bash and other events, like concerts, that Wildwood holds in the town center. You get a sense that family is important here.

What are your favorite go-to local spots or hidden gems? We eat at Wildwood Pub and Grill a lot. We also go to Letty Lou’s for breakfast after church. There are a couple of neat boutique-type stores at Heels Boutique and Milk and Honey. The owners are there a lot and make an effort to get to know their customers. I love that I don’t have to go far to find that special gift or outfit I need. There is really good shopping here in Wildwood with Three French Hens, Imogene’s and Pure by Jen.

fter moving back from California in 2009, the Tenenbaums decided that Creve Coeur was the perfect place for their family of five. Marissa Tenenbaum, a plastic surgeon with West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University, and Jordan Tenenbaum, vice president for Allevant Solutions, chose the neighborhood for its central location to work and play, access to high-quality health care, strong sense of community and excellent schools for their children, 11-year-old Elijah, 8-year-old Zoe and 6-year-old Alina. We spoke with the couple about some of their favorite places to eat and play in Creve Coeur.

What are your favorite go-to spots? So many! Creve Coeur has seven parks – we love hanging out at Beirne Park on a beautiful day. EdgeWild Bistro & Tap, Crushed Red, Il Bel Lago, Bristol Seafood Grill and Pita Plus are great places to eat. The French onion soup at La Bonne Bouchée is amazing. We are really excited for Fred and Ricky’s to open. The Creve Coeur Golf Course and Jewish Community Center are both fantastic. The children love going to Silky’s Frozen Custard and The Painting Spot.

What’s the best way to spend a weekend in Creve Coeur?

After picking up the kids from Sunday school at Temple Israel, we love grabbing brunch at First Watch, then spending time as a family in our yard, going to the kids’ sporting events or playing at Beirne Park, followed by dinner at our house with close friends.

What is a typical Sunday afternoon like in your neighborhood? We will go to church in the morning, and then depending on the kids’ sporting events, we will attend a few of those. Then we’ll walk to the park or go to the blacktop, a common-ground area in our neighborhood. There is a basketball court surrounded by lots of greenery and trees; my daughters have learned to ride bikes there. We go to the blacktop to take a break, get fresh air and connect with neighbors. I call it my happy place.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in Manchester? During the summer, we definitely go to the Cool Dell swimming area. It’s a privately owned pool. They have a great swimming and diving team we participate in. A lot of our friends and neighbors are members there.

Where’s the best spot in Manchester to meet up with friends? We meet up at Corner Pub and Grill or Tavern Kitchen and Bar. We can literally walk to Corner Pub. And we love Uncle Bill’s Pancake & Dinner House; everyone eats there.

rent and Julie Schowe moved to Ballwin 11 years ago with their daughter, Katie, now 12. Their son, Nick, 9, came along shortly afterward, and their three pets, Nala, Leo and Bella, round out their happy family. We asked Julie to share what she and her family enjoy most about living in Ballwin.

Why did you choose to live in Ballwin?

(My husband and I) both grew up in Hermann, Missouri. We knew we wanted to live in St. Louis, but geared toward the county on the west side of 270. We started looking in the area and knew the schools were good. Because we grew up in such a small town, Ballwin is intermixed in the city, but yet in the county. It still feels like we’re back home. We know so many people and have so many friends.

How do you like to spend time as a family in Ballwin? Castlewood State Park – we love going there with the dogs or for a quick hike. We love doing that on a free day.

Where’s the best spot in Ballwin to meet up with friends? Clancy’s Irish Pub. They have the best steak dinner on Saturday nights. Every now and then, we have a girls’ night with about a dozen girls, and we go to Bones French Quarter.

hen Susan and Jason Evans decided to buy a home and start a family in the St. Louis area, they looked no farther than Susan’s hometown of Kirkwood. After Jason and Susan met in Chicago, the two made the move back to St. Louis. “There’s pride in the neighborhood. Neighbors are always willing to help. There really is no better place to raise your kids,” Susan, development director at Washington University, says. Susan and Jason, who now teaches social studies and coaches at Kirkwood High School, are raising their 2-year-old twins, Annie and Mary, in Kirkwood.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in and around your neighborhood? We love to take long walks with our girls and admire the beautiful homes and picturesque sidewalks. We love to pick up doughnuts, meet friends at the park and have a picnic. My husband is a coach at Kirkwood High School, so we like to see the Turkey Day game; it is such a quintessential event, a long-standing tradition the community likes to take part in.

What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? On Saturday mornings, we love to get coffee at Kaldi’s and walk around the Kirkwood farmers’ market. If you’re looking for a place to go without kids, there’s a hidden gem right across from Kirkwood Park, Geyer Inn. It’s a little home that was made into a bar.

eeking a tightknit community, the Turners found what others said about Glendale-Warson to be true. “They say you’ll never want to leave,” Kate Turner of Kate & Company says. “Most of the people around us are the original homeowner or second owners.” The municipality offers a safe and friendly neighborhood, where neighbors become recognizable and everyone feels at home. “We see the same people over and over again. Even our dogs know each other. It’s a place where our kids could ride their bikes out in the street,” Kate says. She and her husband, Adam, along with their two golden retrievers, Louis and Carlton, found that perfect fit in Glendale-Warson.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in and around your neighborhood? Our neighborhood has so much to offer. We walk everywhere. We can walk to Wasabi Sushi. We go to the neighborhood parks and pool – any place we can walk our dogs. There are the new Hollyberry’s restaurant, Nourish or J Greene’s Pub. We’re in close proximity to downtown Clayton and Webster Groves. Whether we go south or west – it doesn’t matter, everywhere is close.

What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in your neighborhood? We usually get up and make a late lunch or breakfast. We have a really beautiful courtyard with a big hammock and fountain, where we’ll sit out and read a book or take the dogs to stretch their legs. There’s a grocery store right at the end of our block that’s perfect for meal planning for the week. It’s like a little-known secret.

elly Midden and her husband, Daniel, moved from Illinois to Missouri in 2013. After an eight month stint in University City, the family settled in Brentwood. Now with a 2-year-old son, August, and an 11-monthold daughter, Dorothy, the Middens are planting their roots in the neighborhood and enjoying every minute.

What do you love most about Brentwood?

We spend a lot of time at Tilles Park. We love taking a stroller and the kids to the park where we can eat and play on the playground. (We love) food-truck Tuesdays at Tilles Park; we can go eat there and listen to live music. We can enjoy nature and teach our kids about nature and the changing seasons.

What have you discovered in the past year about Brentwood? I discovered Purple Cow (children’s clothing store). It’s in walking distance, so if I am out and about with kids, and we need a little break, I’ll stop in there and pick up something for the kids. It’s made our walks more expensive.

Where’s the best spot in Brentwood to meet up with friends?

Movie theaters, shopping… Maplewood is really revitalizing itself.” The Giljums, along with their two kids (Adam, age 9, and Audrey, age 7), believe the Maplewood area has everything they could possibly want in a neighborhood.

What’s your neighborhood’s best-kept secret? It’s the sense of community that keeps us there. It’s all because of Little Flower Catholic Church, where our children go. The community we have with Little Flower and the parish is wonderful. It’s everything you could want out of a community.

What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in your neighborhood? We go to church and to brunch at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood. Then, we like to have people over, either the family or our neighbors, for dinner. We’re very close with our neighbors.

Richmond Heights encapsulated all this and more, making it the perfect place for the Wappelhorsts and their 8-month-old son, Finn, plus their dog, Oliver. earching for a convenient location for work and play, Carissa Minder, a senior project specialist at Washington University in St. Louis, and Matt Minder, an intellectual property attorney at Bryan Cave, fell in love with University City’s vibrant energy, warm and welcoming neighbors, beautiful and unique architecture and fun-filled parks to raise their growing family. Matt and Carissa tell us about some of their favorite local spots for date nights or family outings with their children, Desmond, 3, and Grant, 5 months.

What are your go-to local spots? Our go-to spot is Momo’s Greek Restaurant. It’s so great to sit out on the patio in the summer and enjoy some wine and eats, with or without kids!

Why would you encourage others to move to your neighborhood? The people are so warm and welcoming. We have really great relationships with our neighbors and have made great friends at our church, Christ the King.

What’s the best way to spend a weekend in University City? Playing a round of golf at Ruth Park, taking a walk and stopping to chat with neighbors, and visiting some of the fun boutiques in the Loop. U. City has great parks; Kaufman and Mooney are our favorites.

My favorite thing is, you can walk across Kingshighway, and you’re in Forest Park. Forest Park has a plethora of things to do. If you enter Forest Park from Kingshighway and Lindell, there is a path that goes up and over a bridge that takes you to Steinberg Skating Rink, and it’s a nice walk.

What is a typical Sunday afternoon like in the Central West End? Lucy is in a ballet class, so we’ve been doing that on Sunday afternoons. There is a great playground near the Forest Park Visitor’s Center, so we will wander over there and let her climb on the jungle gym. Sometimes we’ll go over to the World’s Fair Pavilion and eat brunch outside.

Where is the best place to meet up with friends in the Central West End? We love meeting friends at Brennan’s – that was actually our meeting spot before we moved to the Central West End. One of our favorite restaurants is Juniper; the back patio is a neat space.

Christy Thompson of Janet McAfee Real Estate

By Amanda Dahl

‌The art of negotiation is nothing new to Christy Thompson. Having spent 24 years as a practicing attorney for contract negotiations and real estate transactions sharpened her skills of negotiating, making the transition to residential sales with Janet McAfee a seamless move. “My legal background helps me to be a strong advocate for my clients – whether they are on the buying or selling side of the deal,” Thompson says. “Strong, intelligent negotiation is vital since every aspect of the contract is important and deserves attention.” Communication skills also are a key component of her repertoire. Thompson recognizes the value in clear and effective communication to uncover the best opportunities for her clients. “Good communication and networking helps me to find the ideal property for my buyers, identify ‘off the market’ opportunities and position sellers for a successful experience in our real estate market,” she says. Thompson’s full-time venture into residential sales, alongside her career in law, is the result of not only her enhanced skill set, but also because she shares a passion for her city. A native of St. Louis, Thompson

spent time away to pursue her education and promptly moved back to the Gateway to the West, choosing to raise her family here. “I love all the opportunities St. Louis has to offer. From our schools, entertainment and cultural events to the many corporations that have chosen this city, it’s easy to brag about where I live – and to help others fall in love with St. Louis,” Thompson says. Well-equipped to meet any client’s real estate needs, Thompson combines raw talent, powerful skills of negotiation and a tenacity to get the best for her clients – making a potent combination to tackle the St. Louis real estate market.

Complexion Perfection

O

ne of the hottest, most-coveted accessories of all time is a perfect complexion. You see it on runway models, actors, singers and all over social media. But how does it translate to the everyday woman who doesn’t have a glam squad on speed-dial? There are several ways to achieve complexion perfection without overdosing on the product. Try these few easy steps: Get the right foundation. This means getting a perfect match and checking it in different lighting to ensure the color is correct. Be sure to get a formula that suits your skin’s needs. If you are dry, you do not want to get a matte foundation that absorbs oil – this will only end up looking dry and aging you. There are so many great foundations for every skin type; so if you are not absolutely in love with the one you currently have, there is likely a better choice for you. Use the tools of the trade. The tools you use are vital to achieving complexion perfection. You wouldn’t paint a wall with your hands, so why would you apply foundation with your fingers? Brushes will blend the products thinner, smoother and more evenly. On average, you will use one-third less foundation in each application, which controls how the foundation wears,

settles and even feels on your skin. There are many different types of brushes and blenders out there. To determine the right one for your needs, consider your skin type, the formula of your foundation, your preferred application method and your skill level. Don’t hesitate to visit your favorite beauty counter for assistance, if you need. Try a new technique. Techniques like

By Amy Koehler contouring, strobing and baking have actually been around for ages, but have recently become popular again. All are great ways to redefine, sculpt, accentuate and perfect a more youthful complexion. The correct way to utilize each one is significantly different for every individual, depending on desires and face shape. ConSIdErInG A divorce?

Game ON!

By Frank Cusumano

‌I will try not to sound like a scorned lover. I will try not to be bitter. I will try to be mature… Actually, I won’t. It will take a long time to recover from becoming an NFLless city. Allow me to vent:

1

Nice precedent, NFL. You put out the worst product ever, allow the owner to disregard communicating with the city and then reward him with the secondbiggest market in the country.

2

Kevin Demoff mentioning the word “tradition” with the Rams. The Rams posted a 37-74-1 record with Demoff running things at Rams Park. He also indicated to our town that the land purchase was made in an effort to spur St. Louis to get something done. Oh, really?

3 4 5 6

Roger Goodell made it seem like he actually gave Dave Peacock a legitimate chance to keep the NFL in St. Louis. He was never going to allow it. My favorite team in the NFL next year will be the Rams’ opponent each week.

When did Stan Kroenke turn into “chatty Kathy”? He was Howard Hughes here, and now he is doing lengthy interviews with Sports Illustrated and the Los Angeles Times.

I can’t help wondering this: If Sam Bradford had turned into Peyton Manning or Cam Newton, would things have been different? Teams don’t leave cities very often with superstar quarterbacks and winning records.

7

This whole saga makes me appreciate Tom Stillman and Bill DeWitt more. Stillman is still playing pickup hockey, and DeWitt is our greatest owner ever. Don’t go changing, fellas.

8

The MLS is not a pipe dream. There are too much soccer tradition and too many talented movers and shakers to see this fail. And unlike with the NFL, I think the MLS will handle this situation with some class.

Alexandra M. Hart

ExpErIEnCE mATTErS If you are contemplating a divorce, consider a consultation with Alex Hart of STL Law Group, LLC. Known for her aggressive yet practical approach, Hart is sensitive to her clients’ issues created by divorce. After more than 20 years of domestic law practice and courtroom experience, Hart has the expertise needed to handle the details involving complicated asset divisions often present in marriage dissolutions. Hart is compassionate when it comes to listening to her clients before advising them on the best way to proceed in a divorce. 9

Wait until the players find out how much money they are going to lose in this move. I don’t blame them a bit, and many are great people. However, Robert Quinn will bring home about $1 million less playing in LA next year than he would have playing in St. Louis.

10

The leaders of the league may not be any good. However, it won’t diminish my love for the product. Some prefer the college game. Give me the NFL any day of the week. Fantasy Football will still be exciting.

11 12

I can’t become a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know they are a fine franchise in our state, but you can’t force love. I am not interested, but thanks for asking.

Ultimately, it’s all about Stan getting what he wants. However, I wonder how a few of his loyal soldier-attorneys feel now. They are the ones who were born, were raised and have lived in our town their entire lives. Yet a few of them were helping Stan write that 29-page letter of fiction to the NFL which disparaged our city. They wrote that it would be financially ruinous to have the NFL stay here. I don’t know how those attorneys can cope with living in such a horrible city. They know who they are.

13

I would not be surprised if our hockey and baseball teams thrill us and make the divorce a little easier. The Blues are loaded with so many talented young players. Doug Armstrong is a smart man. John Mozeliak has a track record you can’t deny.

Finally, so we have lost a team that never wins with an owner who never wanted to be here. Is it really that bad? Actually, it is.

Hyken’s HOMEWORK “High” School Stress

‌I

recently participated in a professional panel discussion at Logos School about student stress. Logos School has a unique educational approach that supports struggling students with flexible academics, innovative therapy and parental involvement. The catalyst to this important conversation was a current study by a Saint Louis University professor who found more than 80 percent of all high school students suffered from moderate to severe anxiety. While I think this number is somewhat exaggerated, I do believe that today’s students are overstressed. In addition to worrying about grades, most also need to manage social pressure, appearance/self-esteem concerns and extracurricular demands. And through the relentless power of social media, the day’s stress follows a student home, offering little opportunity for him or her to disconnect and take a breath. I see a lot of overly anxious kids in my private therapy practice. They engage in catastrophic thinking and often believe that a bad quiz grade will lead to class failure or worse. Interestingly, this pressure is self-imposed. Most

of their parents will, in fact, say that they would rather their child be happy than make a 4.0 GPA. Busy students must learn balance if they are going to lead happy lives. Schools can assist not only by cultivating a student’s intellect, but also by focusing on mental health and physical well-being. Parents can help by setting limits on screen time, directing students to stress-relieving activities (sports, music, etc.) and encouraging proper diet and sleep. Striving for excellence can be a rewarding experience. Constantly pushing boundaries to the point of ill health is, however, unproductive and unsustainable. The most important thing students can learn is to respect their own capabilities and ask for help when they are in trouble. The importance of looking past your divorce St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

For those going through a divorce, it can be hard to see into the future. It’s often much easier to focus on the present. In the present, the process can be frustrating. When you are going through a divorce, it can feel as if your whole life is in the balance. This can often cause parties to focus on the here and the now versus thinking about how life will be in the future. In focusing on the here and the now, parties can often say and do things that can lead to long-term resentment and anger. In focusing on the here and the now, parties can often be focused on the things that led to the divorce. This can often result in parties engaging in behavior that

might feel good in the moment, but can have long-term implications on the future. In the future, two parties to a divorce might end up attending a high school graduation together. In the future, two parties to a divorce might end up at a wedding for one of their children. In the future, two parties to a divorce can find themselves in a hospital delivery room waiting for the birth of a grandchild. In the end, there will be a litany of events like this that are hard to envision when you are going through a divorce. If you are going through a divorce, the present can often be a frustrating and difficult process. But at the same time, it can be important to be thinking about the

future. At some point, that future is going to come and it is vital that two parties to a divorce at least have a cordial relationship as best as possible. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We have lawyers available to help you in your case. When you retain us, you will receive access to your case through Your Case Tracker and you will receive your lawyer’s personal cell phone number. Call today to schedule your 30-minute consultation.

Before the

Altar

No newly engaged couple anticipates saying, “I don’t,” but can planning for divorce before you’ve tied the knot actually make for a more honest marriage? By Brittany Nay

M

arriage is an emotional partnership – as well as an economic one, as many attorneys will be quick to remind you. We asked three local attorneys why they believe prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, when properly drafted and implemented, only serve to benefit each spouse. A prenuptial agreement (or prenup) is a contract entered between a couple concerning financial issues prior to becoming married, while a postnuptial agreement (a postnup) is entered after the marriage, says James Carmody, a family law attorney and principal at St. Louis’ Carmody MacDonald. The agreements establish the respective rights of each party to property, including income and responsibility for debts in the event of death or divorce, explains Bruce Friedman, a family law attorney with Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal in St. Louis. The agreements can also address spousal support and attorney fees in the event of a divorce or an unsuccessful challenge to a contract, he adds. “Each agreement is unique based on the objectives of the parties.” A common reason for today’s prenups is to protect property acquired prior to the marriage, says Sophya Raza, a family law attorney with Danna McKitrick in St. Louis. And couples often enter into postnups to guard inheritances for their children from a former

84

LadueNews.com | feBruary 5, 2016

marriage – otherwise their estate could be passed on to their future ex-spouses and in-laws in the case of a divorce, Raza adds. Although attorneys say one agreement is not necessarily more valuable than the other, Friedman notes a prenup can be a better approach since the case law regarding postnups is relatively unclear. “There is greater uncertainty in the law about the validity and enforceability of postnuptial agreements.” To ensure the agreement is completed in a professional, sensitive and beneficial manner for both parties, Raza says it’s important to begin the process months prior to the wedding. To create a prenup or postnup, a couple discusses terms of the agreement, prepares a draft, discloses financial information and negotiates and finalizes the agreement, Carmody explains. Carmody advises couples communicate openly about all aspects of the agreement. “The attorney can be the ‘bad guy’ with regard to some issues, but be prepared for a frank give-and-take discussion, as well as the difficult nature of the conversations.” Although difficult, there are many benefits to the agreements. “You are creating the terms of the settlement of your divorce case upfront,” Carmody says. “Because of the expense, conflict and delay involved in a typical contested dissolution of marriage case, this can

be a benefit (if sorted out beforehand).” Another bonus of a prenup is addressing the often-taboo topic of money before marriage. “This may help identify differing views and expectations about financial issues, spending and saving,” Friedman says. “This can help marital harmony and not create an incentive to divorce, but instead work on the marriage.” The contracts also can protect family businesses, lifetime gifts and inheritances, he adds. But with these agreements can come risk. Raza recalls cases in which the contracts were poorly written or misunderstood by one or both spouses. “One case I had to take all the way to arbitration because they couldn’t agree what it said,” she says. “The agreements can cause more trouble than help if they are poorly drafted.” Raza reminds couples to seek referrals for qualified and experienced attorneys to ensure a comprehensive agreement – understood by all parties – will be drafted. Most prenups are upheld by the court if they are properly drafted and negotiated in a professional manner, Friedman adds. “But the risks can include an agreement that one party may later feel is unfair and creates insecurity in the relationship.” Carmody agrees, adding that carefully and deliberately planned prenups

can set each spouse’s expectations in advance and save the time, expense and conflict of a contested proceeding. “However,” he cautions, “the process of trying to reach (an) agreement can sometimes expose latent fractures in the relationship.” Today, Raza says there’s less stigma attached to prenups and postnups than in the past. “Some people have thought, ‘Oh, you’re already talking about us getting a divorce?,’” Raza says. “But the divorce rate is so high today that you need to be prepared about that possibility. A marriage is not only a loving relationship, but also a business and financial relationship. These agreements, with their financial disclosure, can lead to being more successful in marriage.” Danna McKitrick, 7701 Forsyth Blvd. #800, St. Louis, 314-726-1000, dannamckitrick.com Carmody MacDonald, 120 S. STL LAW FIRMS: Feature Story

Serving the

CARMODY MACDONALD P.C.

COMMUNITY By Robyn Dexter

C

armody MacDonald is celebrating its 35th anniversary – and other milestones as well. The firm was recently recognized by “U.S. News – Best Lawyers” Best Law Firms 2016 as a top-tier St. Louis firm, along with seven of its attorneys being recognized as “Best Lawyers” through peer-review surveys. The firm’s attorneys pride themselves on their strong relationships with their clients and being able to provide top-quality – but cost-effective – legal services. Carmody MacDonald attorney Brian Behrens says the firm is different from other firms in important ways. “We can take on complex, high-level work, but our firm is structured such that we don’t have offices all over the world,” he says. “We can provide cost-effective legal services, and our clients really appreciate that.”

The firm’s attorneys can address virtually every realm of corporate and individual needs, including banking and finance, business law, emerging businesses, employment law, estate planning, family law, financial restructuring and bankruptcy, litigation, real estate, taxation, trade associations, venture capital and private equity, and more. The firm started with a fairly small group in 1981 and has since grown to more than 40 attorneys. “It’s still growing,” Behrens says. “But we haven’t taken on large groups or merged with anyone. We’re seeing a steady growth.” Carmody MacDonald lawyers and staff spend a large portion of their time involved in the community. They contribute their time, expertise and financial support to more than 50 local organizations in a wide range of civic, philanthropic, professional, educational

and charitable activities, along with providing pro bono work for those in need. Some of the organizations Carmody MacDonald lawyers are involved in include the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Central Institute for the Deaf, Art Saint Louis, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Junior Achievement, and many more. “Community service is a big part of our firm,” Behrens says. “It provides a work-life balance and is a great chance to meet other people in the community. Our involvement ranges from providing legal services to those in need to teaching kids about the law and banking. It’s a big part of what we believe in.”

Dinner ...

Citizen Kane’s

“G

eorama,” now showing at The Rep, is a rich tale about life and the choices we make, with a backdrop of the mighty Mississippi and the eponymous artistic representation of it that took the world by storm in the mid-1800s. What better way to celebrate such a show than with a similarly sprawling spread at Citizen Kane’s? The steakhouse is a venerable American institution, and Citizen Kane’s is definitely a part of that tradition. But instead of the dark wood and sumptuous booths that are common accoutrements in these sorts of establishments, Citizen Kane’s is located in a historic Victorian house. The resulting homey vibe makes for a bit more convivial dining experience.

LadueNews.com | FEBRUARY 5, 2016

While the atmosphere may be somewhat unconventional, menu-wise, Citizen Kane’s is pure old-school steakhouse. All of the prime cuts are available, along with several seafood options. There’s also a Daily Inquirer Special for those looking for something different. For apps, the list includes standards like shrimp cocktail and french-fried onion rings ($9.50), a particular favorite of mine. These came to the table stacked on the plate in a glorious golden pyramid and had just enough batter on the outside to contrast the sweet onion within without overwhelming it. We also got an order of toasted ravioli ($9.50), a pretty solid version of this perennial St. Louis favorite. It’s nigh on impossible for me to go to a purveyor of meat and not indulge. I mean, I love fish, but... On this

By Matt Sorrell visit, we did some damage to a couple of favorites, the filet ($38.95) and the ribeye ($38.95). The filet, billed as the most tender cut of beef, more than lived up to its reputation. It was cooked perfectly, and size-wise, it was just big enough to satisfy. The ribeye, on the other hand, is a most mighty portion of beef. This behemoth was cooked a perfect rare, pink and with just the right amount of chewiness. No way could I finish this off in one sitting. Unlike many steakhouses, Citizen Kane’s includes a side with each steak, along with a choice of soup or salad. We hit the starches hard and got the garlic mashed potatoes as well as the boardinghouse potatoes, crispy chunks of spuds, onion and peppers sautéed in olive oil. We mitigated these choices

somewhat with a couple of house salads. We paired our carnivorous choices with a Manhattan ($9.75), made with Knob Creek rye, and a dram of Oban 14-year-old scotch ($10.25). This Highland whisky is redolent of soft fruit notes with just a bit of smoke, some honey and heather, making it a perfect accompaniment to all of that rich beef. Citizen Kane’s has a sizable parking lot in the back as well as valet services. Additionally, it’s close to the highway and located just off the main drag of Kirkwood Road, making it easy to drop in and indulge your meaty cravings.

‌Story: Struggling artist John Banvard loves painting more than the menial-labor jobs he reluctantly takes to survive. One day circa 1840, as he sits on a dock sketching scenes of the adjacent Mississippi River, his work catches the eye of a flamboyant huckster named Taylor. The latter has just been jettisoned from his job promoting a showboat operated by an Englishman named William Chapman. The boat is listing financially and needs an economic fix in order to stay afloat. Taylor is convinced that Banvard’s sweeping sketches of the river will attract customers, but Chapman says they need something more. Banvard soon is inspired to create a “georama,” a painting on a canvas hundreds of feet long that unwinds on a giant spool. The idea takes off, as do the careers of the artist and the two businessmen. Eventually Banvard leaves, going out on his own with an attractive young composer named Elizabeth who agrees to journey with him and write background music for his paintings. They achieve considerable success until Banvard makes a series of disastrous business decisions that take them from wealth to near impoverishment. Still, Elizabeth holds out hope that her beloved John will once again understand the priorities between art and fame and remember who he once was. Highlights: What a wondrous musical is this world premiere written by West Hyler and Matt Schatz, following its initial development in a workshop at The Rep’s own Ignite! readings for new plays in 2014. Two short years later, “Georama” is sailing in The Rep’s Studio Theatre in a production as strong and steady as the mighty Mississippi River itself. Other Info: In the fine tradition of “truth is stranger than fiction,” Hyler first learned about the real-life Banvard when he read a short story by Paul Collins titled “Banvard’s Folly” written in 2001. Information on the artist is scarce, but Hyler and his creative team found some books by Banvard in the Library of Congress. Included was a guidebook sold by the painter at his shows that included a script and accompanying sheet music for his “Georama.” The current “Georama” is a captivating delight as written by Hyler and Schatz, who also composed the music and wrote the lyrics, with additional music and lyrics by Jack Herrick. Hyler himself deftly directs the world premiere, a nifty, 90-minute, one-act performance that could easily be divided into two acts without diluting its impact. Under the musical direction of Jacob Yates, “Georama” has a distinctive folk style played infectiously by Yates at the piano and Emily Mikesell on the fiddle. It opens with a delightful number called “Nobody Knows,” an explanation of who Banvard was and how he eventually fell into obscurity despite his talents. Hyler’s cast is uniformly engaging and entertaining

as they immerse themselves in this upbeat but still sobering tale of an incredible individual who could not escape his own destiny. P.J. Griffith does a fabulous job bringing this representation of the real Banvard to life, showing the man’s passion for his art and love for Elizabeth as well as his descent into self-destruction. Jillian Louis complements him beautifully as Elizabeth, a woman who bucks the pressure of her minister father (who warns John in the tune “Make Things People Need” to learn a paying trade) and who leaves her frontier home for a life of adventures with the handsome young artist. Dan Sharkey doubles as Elizabeth’s pragmatic but loving father and as the wise entrepreneur Chapman, who tries to save John from himself when they meet again years later in London. As Taylor, Randy Blair brings the fast-talking, shady barker to life with his insightful knack for giving people what they want, albeit sometimes under the illusion of accuracy. A major star in the production is an actual georama painting that scrolls through approximately 600 feet of scenic backdrops painted by artists at The Paint Space in south St. Louis from Neale’s original concepts. It is an impressive accomplishment that vibrantly accentuates the musical story of the man who originated these 19th-century panoramas. The Rep’s program essay for “Georama” notes that the only known surviving Mississippi River panorama is in the Saint Louis Art Museum collection. “Georama” is handsomely crafted and filled with surprising elements, an enchanting journey into a fascinating chapter of American history.

Arts Speak

Q&A

WITH DIVINEMOIRA STUDIO’S ERIN MCGRATH REIKE

‌Erin McGrath Reike founded Divinemoira Studio in 2010 as a haven for the three things she holds closest to her heart: art, inspiration and hope. Growing up in an age where children were steered away from creative arts as a career, Reike found sanctuary in art, music, theater and literature. Through her artistic co-op, Reike is able to provide a collaborative space for the art community through an online platform for sales, support for exhibits and events, and a place for artists to connect with one another and encourage each other. What is Divinemoira Studio, in your own words? Divinemoira Studio is a curated collection of art, jewelry and accessories. We utilize the arts and fashion to promote hope and inspiration to our community. Divinemoira Studio has always been intended to exist as an idea. A concept. We are a collection of creative people. We are events and exhibits. We are an online gallery and shop. We are causes and beliefs, dreams and ambitions. Sometimes we are fancy and elaborate. Sometimes we are down-home and simple. The studio is a little bit of everything, because inspiration and hope can come from anywhere – and the human connection is the core of this “idea.” How are artisans selected to be part of Divinemoira? Artisans come to us primarily through local and national calls for art. These artisans are reviewed either by our advisory board or by guest jurors participating in event-driven exhibitions. However, a significant number of artisans presented in our digital format are represented by Divinemoira Studio because they utilize their creative process to better their community or society as a whole. How does an art co-op work? What is included in Divinemoira co-op ownership/membership? Divinemoira Studio is an art co-op in concept. Our artisans come together under the umbrella of Divinemoira Studio and help one another through cross-promotion. Divinemoira Studio as an entity provides our contributing artisans with a digital presence, features in our social media campaigns, and the option to participate in our private events and exhibits. We believe that we are stronger together than alone. Are the services listed on the website only available to co-op members? There is frequently a great divide between business and creativity. We developed services, which are available to businesses and creative people, to close that gap. The arts promote conversation, and artistic expression facilitates abstract thinking. Original art on the walls within a business helps create an atmosphere supporting company ideology and encourages conversation between employees and clients. Our Art Leasing programs make original art affordable to businesses and help support emerging artists. Our Creative Workshops for companies use art for team building. Bringing employees together to work on a collaborative piece of art encourages abstract thinking and creates unity between participants. On the flip side, a significant number of artisans struggle with the business aspects of the art world. This struggle often prevents talented artisans from getting the recognition for their work that they deserve. We provide services to creatives that help promote their work through representation, writing services and career workshops. What’s new at the studio? We are thrilled to partner with rising stars within the arts community this year. We will be introducing the work of Dina Worzel, John Blair, Thomas Park and Rose Morello this winter. We have new pieces coming in from photographers Brittany Taylor and Jeff Sass, as well as exciting works from Jeffrey Richter and B.J. Carrick, among others. Divinemoira Studio hopes to work with more musicians, as we are currently featuring the music of One Take Band. We are also excited to present our expanded curated collections of jewelry and accessories from both independent designers as well as within our studio collections.

94   LadueNews.com | February 5, 2016

What can you tell me about upcoming 2016 projects? We’ve kicked off 2016 with our winter edition, titled “Illumination.” This is a presentation of works in a digital format that embrace the light that shines on us and within us. “Illumination” really sets the tone for our 2016 projects. We will be focusing on featuring the people and the stories behind works of art and in our collections. Divinemoira Studio will continue to partner with local nonprofit organizations through several private events and exhibits, which are geared toward promoting funding and awareness of important issues like arts education and art therapy. Our goal in 2016 is to really become a leader in social business, which means we aim to shine a light on utilizing the incredible power of the arts to promote inspiration and hope.

Chesterfield Physician Delivers A Recipe For Weight Loss

Dr. Bryan Deloney, PSc.D, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).

NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida,

parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.

Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.

Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.

Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

Denise Ward-Brown When Denise Ward-Brown was awarded the Fulbright Senior Scholarship in 1997, she was an internationally exhibited sculptor, with no idea that she was about to embark on a journey that would change the trajectory of the rest of her career. For her Fulbright fellowship, WardBrown traveled to Ghana for research. “I picked up a video camera – and I’ve not been able to put it down,” she says. During her fellowship, Ward-Brown filmed her travels and research of African history in Ivory Coast, Mali, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and South Africa. “I’ve absolutely found that film is an excellent way to create narratives,” WardBrown says. Her narratives often explore African and African-American themes and history, sharing the behindthe-scenes stories that have been forgotten or overlooked. Ward-Brown’s latest film, “Jim Crow to Barack Obama,” was a runner-up in the documentary category at the 2013 San Francisco Black Film Festival. For the film, WardBrown, who is also an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis’ Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, assembled a group of young students to interview African-Americans aged 75 to 104 to ask them what it was like to grow up in the Jim Crow era. “I wanted to make sure there was a record of what regular, normal working people, ordinary people, did and how they survived and thrived,” she says. “These people are vibrant, intelligent people, and they’re like burning libraries – if you don’t get the information now, it might be lost forever.” “Jim Crow to Barack Obama” shows a slice of everyday life as an average black citizen in that era – how they existed and worked, their loves and losses. The film brought with it a wealth of personal growth for WardBrown and the young people conducting the interviews. “For me, it was breathtaking to hear the (subjects) talk about this,” she says. “It was also breathtaking to see the students mature. When I took a group of them to Memphis and they interviewed the man who was standing next to Martin Luther King Jr. when he was assassinated and the following day we went to the (National) Civil Rights Museum, the youths had put ‘history’ in the context of life. That’s why I really like documentary film.” The RAC fellowship enables Ward-Brown to continue her work researching and staffing a team of collaborative partners on two additional films currently in her wheelhouse. The first of these projects is a documentary recalling the story of the 1917 East St. Louis race riots, the outbreak of labor- and race-related violence in the city that took more than 200 lives and caused extensive property damage. The film’s premiere will coincide with a weeklong centennial commemoration in 2017. The second project Ward-Brown is undertaking is in collaboration with her Sam Fox School colleague, photographer Jennifer Colten Schmidt. The pair explores Washington Park Cemetery in Berkeley – the historic African-American cemetery that, in the past few decades, has fallen into alarming disrepair, as depicted through Colten Schmidt’s own 15-year-old photography archives, which largely started with the removal of 10,000 bodies for airport expansion, and Ward-Brown’s interviews with key players. Colten Schmidt and Ward-Brown plan to exhibit their work at the Sheldon Art Galleries in March 2017, joining ongoing efforts to save the cemetery. “I’m not a historian – I’m an ‘amateur’ historian,” Ward-Brown is quick to say. “I’m a person who collects stories. And luckily, film is a wonderful venue for sharing these stories.”

Dwayne Bosman

“I started in music,” Dwayne Bosman says – an introductory statement that carries immeasurable weight in legacy. For Bosman, an award-winning jazz musician and composer, music has always been an intrinsic part of who he is. The son of nationally renowned jazz artist Lloyd A. Smith, music was all around him. “We always had jazz around the house,” he recalls. Bosman’s father played with the big bands of the era, like Eddie Randle and the Blue Devils, and was a sideman with jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington. His boyhood St. Louis home was a revolving door of legendary musicians including Jonah Jones and Louis Armstrong. Following experiences with classical and Gospel music, Bosman started learning how to play jazz flute at age 10 from his father. Talent begets talent, it seems – by age 14, he was performing professionally with his twin brother, Dwight, in a group called Soulful Moods. He continued his study throughout high school and through a music scholarship to Florida A&M University, picking up even more instruments along the way – Bosman mastered members of the flute family, from the bass flute to the piccolo, as well as the

saxophone family – eventually settling on the tenor sax as his specialty. “Each woodwind instrument expresses a different sound, tone and voice,” Bosman says. “These variations are like colors in an artist’s palette. As a jazz artist, I use these ‘colors’ in the musical space to produce my personal tone through dynamics and improvisation. Playing the individual instruments gives me freedom to add visual aspects to my music.” As part of The Bosman Twins with Dwight, Bosman has graced the stage with some of jazz music’s greats like Freddie Cole, Roy Ayers, Lester Bowie and Fontella Bass. The pair has toured all over the world, finding that music establishes a common ground where language cannot. “That’s one reason I chose music as a life project,” Bosman says. “Music is accepted all over the world. People might not speak your language, but they understand your music.” It’s this unifying, transcendent force of music that drives Bosman and his brother in support of the preservation of school music programs so that musical talent, specifically within jazz, is cultured and the genre continues to thrive. With assistance from the RAC

fellowship, it is this young talent that Bosman plans to work with to create a composition that showcases what he is calling “the St. Louis sound.” “Every major city has a sound – Kansas City, New York, New Orleans,” Bosman says. Bosman’s St. Louis sound will combine all the elements that make up the whole – jazz, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues – into a recognizable sound that will capture the essence of the city. “It’s important to the city to help establish an identity locally as well as nationally,” Bosman says. “We want to be recognized.” Bosman believes a unified sound is just one step to the unification of a city. “We need to be more connected: the younger and the older, the old and the new,” he says. “There’s a lot of separatism in this town.” Through this collaboration of musicians in creating the St. Louis sound, Bosman hopes to see artists of all ages and ethnic backgrounds come together under the universal language of music.
