CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE

SOCIETY DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE WHEN YOU MOVED IN to your neighborhood? I do. It was a perfect early autumn day; and as we drove past the row of houses that would soon become a familiar landscape, columns of stately oaks and maples seemed to form a receiving line that guided us into our waiting home. One of the first things we did was to take a long walk. The leaves were just beginning to turn, and a delicate breeze flirted with the dangling shapes of yellow, orange, red and purple. I remember neighbors smiling, waving and saying hello—and soon after, even inviting us for a gettogether. There was no doubt in our minds that we had found ‘home.’ As you peruse our latest Neighborhoods special section, you’ll meet families who feel the same way about their ‘nabe.’ It’s what makes each neighborhood special—how people feel about it and how that feeling translates into a love of the place we call home.

SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE…SOMETHING FURRY When Amanda and Jeffrey Mullen were preparing for their wedding, Amanda knew that she wanted her pets to play a big part. Her dog, Dakota, played the biggest role. “We’re both animal lovers, and animals are a big part of my life and career, so I thought it was appropriate to have her there for the wedding, just like you want to share it with your other family members,” she says.

WELCOME TO OUR NEIGHBORHOODS In our annual tribute to St. Louis’ neighborhoods, we celebrate the urban feel of the Central West End, the family-friendly confines of Webster and Kirkwood, the community spirit of Ladue and everything in-between.

TRAVEL: TRANSATLANTIC CRUISE We recently set sail on our first repositioning cruise with 13 other St. Louisans. Our initial thoughts were that we might be bored with so much leisure time and no sight of land for seven days. In truth, there was not a moment of boredom aboard the ship, which offered an endless assortment of exciting activities for every guest no matter what their age.

Where do you live, and what do you like most about your neighborhood? Debbie Baldwin

Baldwin, an entertainment columnist and humorist extraordinaire, was raised in St. Louis and lives with her husband and three children in Ladue. But apparently, she’s in denial: “I live in my head. I like it because it is very crowded…”

Laura Graesser A staff writer, Graesser lives in Richmond Heights. “I love being able to walk or ride my bike to Forest Park, or jump on Highway 40 and easily get anywhere in the city. And having Fozzie’s Sandwich Emporium just down the street is a definite bonus!”

THE DESCO GROUP

The Next Big Thing L

N‘S STOMPING GROUNDS ARE ABOUT TO GET A LOT MORE INTEResting, as Colonial Marketplace is getting a major renovation. Recently acquired by The DESCO Group, the plaza already is humming with construction crews, who are ensuring that the building will live up to the potential its stellar location provides. Steps from downtown Clayton, the historic plaza sits on the northwest corner of Ladue Road and Gay Avenue. “Our vision is to make it a boutique and restaurant destination,” says DESCO president and CEO Mark Schnuck. “With the Clayton business district, great access from 170 and Ladue Road, and nearby residential neighborhoods in Clayton, Ladue and University City, it’s a great property and a great location.” Perhaps most exciting is the slew of new tenants who have signed on to the project. Joining the current tenants are Ivy Hill; an expanded Woman’s Exchange; Clarkson Eyecare; a second area location of Original Pancake House; Dominic Michael Salon; cini Italian Restaurant—a casual eatery owned by the Gabriele family, which runs Giovanni’s on the Hill and Il Bel Lago in Creve Coeur; and Dimvaloo Active Living, a high-end fitness clothing retailer. Out of the plaza’s 78,000 square feet, only about 18,000 square feet have yet to be leased, Schnuck notes. A great traffic count and affluent area are among the draws he cites for bringing in retailers so quickly. “It’s

The DESCO Group director of design and construction Franklin Sears, president and CEO Mark Schnuck, and VP of retail development Mike Anthon

going to be a beautiful product once it’s complete.” Most of the renovations should be complete by mid-March to early April, with tenants opening up almost every month for the next year, Schnuck notes. Still in the works is an overhaul of the landscaping along Ladue Road. “It will be highly landscaped and we’re very excited about what we’re doing there,” he says. “There will be limestone columns with fencing that matches the Chippendale fencing on the top of the center, as well as plenty of landscaping and flowers. It’s going to look very nice.” The renovations complement a facelift to the adjoining Ladue Crossing, which is anchored by a Schnucks, Barnes & Noble and Old Navy. There, many Continued on page 72

LN COOKS

For Your Valentine:

30-Second Chocolate Micro-Sponge Q: How are you, Chef? Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and I want to cook a romantic dinner at home. I am a pretty good cook, but I usually end up buying dessert and try to pass it off as my own. Is there something easy that I can do? A: It is a new year, and we have moved from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. As the song says, Then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. It is the age of learning and believing in yourself. I have just the recipe to start you off on—one that will begin to give you the confidence to try new things and give you the opportunity to create a masterpiece desert for the one you love.

Notes: This recipe is difficult to convert to ounces, so I suggest using a gram scale to make sure weights are correct. Once you have made your micro-sponge, I suggest breaking it into rough pieces and serve, with your favorite cherry filling and garnish with chocolate truffles. If you want to see and taste this desert before making, it is one of the items that we are serving on our new dessert bar at the 1904 Steak House.

Makes 6 portions (8-oz cups)

DIRECTIONS:

INGREDIENTS:

Mix cocoa powder, eggs, sugar and flour in a blender until the mixture is well-combined. Strain the mixture using a sieve and pour into a ½-litre siphon. Charge with two cream cartridges.

25 g cocoa powder 4 eggs 80 g sugar 20 g all-purpose flour Garnish* OTHER EQUIPMENT: ½ liter iSi Siphon (a whipped cream dispenser available at Starbucks and some Target stores) 2 cream cartridges (N2O) (a disposable one-use cylinder used to whip the cream in the cream dispenser) Paper cups

Make eight to nine small cuts into the paper cups to allow venting of steam. Fill each cup 1/3 full with mixture from the siphon. Cook on high for approximately 30 to 40 seconds in a microwave. The cook time will vary with the wattage of the microwave and quantity dispersed (can take as little as 16 seconds). I suggest running a test to adjust cook time. Carefully remove from the microwave and allow the cup to sit upside down for five to 10 minutes before removing the micro-sponge from the cup. *Garnish with broken pieces of brownies or truffles, fresh or dried raspberries, or your favorite fruit puree.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING

A Measure of Prevention

T

HE ABCS OF CERVICAL HEALTH boil down to three other letters: HPV. There is more than 150 types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which are classified as one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world. Most HPVs are cleared by the immune system before they become problematic, but some strains are known to cause genital warts and cancers. “About 15 HPV types can cause precancerous or cancerous changes in cells,” explains Dr. Jill Powell, a SLUCare obstetrician/gynecologist. “About 99 percent of cervical cancer is caused by HPV, but it is important to know that only from 3 to 10 percent of HPV infections lead to an abnormal (cervical cancer screening test) and even fewer lead to precancerous or cancerous changes in cells. So HPV is necessary but not sufficient to cause cervical cancer. There are likely multiple factors that can lead to an HPV infection progressing to precancerous changes (dysplasia) of the cervix including smoking, a weak immune system and even genetics.” Physicians emphasize the importance of the HPV vaccine, the only vaccine currently known to prevent cancer. “The HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is effective against four strains of HPV, including types 16 and 18 that cause more than 70 percent of the cancers,” says Dr. David Weinstein, chief of obstetrics/gynecology at Missouri Baptist Medical BY CONNIE MITCHELL

24

FEBRUARY 8, 2013 {LadueNews.com}

Center. The vaccine is approved for both boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 26 in the United States, he notes. In addition to Gardasil, Cervarix targets only types 16 and 18 and is approved for girls ages 9 to 25. The vaccines are designed to be given in three doses during a six-month period and are recommended at age 11 or 12. “The acceptance of vaccinating teen girls has gradually grown over the years as both pediatricians and parents become more informed about the important health benefits of HPV vaccination,” Powell says. “Now that HPV vaccination is approved for boys, I think that vaccination rates universally will increase as it becomes a more routine teen vaccine rather than genderspecific. I have personally had my own teenage son vaccinated and am planning for my daughter to be vaccinated at that age also.” Weinstein adds that the benefits of the HPV vaccine already are becoming evident. “There already has been a reduction in precancerous cells,” he says. “In Australia, where they’re vaccinating both boys and girls, there’s been a very significant reduction in the risk of cervical cancer and precancerous cells in females.” The other primary defense against cervical cancer is screening, known as pap testing, to identify precancerous cells. If identified, the cells can be removed or treated and cancer prevented. “Cervical cancer screening recommendations have changed significantly over the past few years because of advances in pap smear technology

and accuracy, advances in HPV testing to better predict whether an abnormal pap smear could lead to cervical cancer, and more research about the natural history of HPV infection and its subsequent persistence,” Powell says. Current recommendations call for screening tests to begin at age 21, regardless of sexual activity prior to that time. “(Women) still should receive at least annual testing on a pelvic exam or urine sample for chlamydia infection, but a pap smear should not be done (annually) because cervical cancer is exceedingly rare in this age group, and screening has not been shown to decrease these rates,” Powell adds. Women ages 21 to 29 should have a screening test every three years, and women ages 30 to 64 can have a pap test along with HPV testing, known as ‘co-testing,’ every five years or a pap test alone every three years. At age 65, most women who have had at least three negative pap tests during the last 10 years or two negative pap tests with negative HPV testing during the last 10 years and have not had moderate or severe cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer in the past need no further testing. Powell envisions a future where cervical cancer is all but obliterated: “With the combination of appropriate screening and now HPV vaccination, my hope is that in 25 years, I have to explain to my medical students what cervical cancer looks like and describe the surgeries we use to do to treat it because they will see it so infrequently.”

HEN AMANDA AND JEFFREY MULLEN WERE PREPARing for their wedding in 2010, Amanda Mullen knew that she wanted her pets to play a big part. After all, she is the director of the Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. Her dog, Dakota, played the biggest role. “We’re both animal lovers, and animals are a big part of my life and career, so I thought it was appropriate to have her there for the wedding, just like you want to share it with your other family members,” she says. And while Mullen’s horses and chickens weren’t physically at the wedding, they made appearances in unique ways. For example, the flower girls threw feathers from their chicken coup instead of flower petals. This worked particularly well, since the wedding was outdoors at The Studio at St. Albans. “We gathered the feathers over several months. It was a windy day, so there was a lot of excitement and the kids had fun throwing them! We also tied the feathers into the invitations and the napkins at the table settings.” The most important thing about incorporating pets into a wedding is to keep the stress levels as low as possible—both for you and your pet—and Mullen says the smartest thing she did was to hire a dog handler she trusts. The owner of The Dog House, where Mullen regularly boards Dakota, met them at the venue and watched her throughout the day. “Dakota went down the aisle and sat near my brother; she was relaxed during the ceremony. Then, she walked back out with the other bridesmaids.” Dakota also stayed for pictures; and when her part was over, the handler brought her back to the kennel, where she stayed while the couple went on their honeymoon. The best part? “I have all these pictures and memories of her being there. I’ve had Dakota since she was just a few months old, and she’s 11 years old now. We’re not sure how long we’ll have her around, but we have these pictures of her at the biggest event of our lives.”

WANT TO INCLUDE PETS IN YOUR BIG DAY? WE GOT THESE TIPS FROM EVENT AND WEDDING PLANNER KATIE FOGERTY, OF KATE & CO.: • Train, train, train your animal. Make sure they come to the rehearsal and run through it several times. Practice makes perfect. • Make sure to notify the right people, such as the photographer and the venue. • Assign a pet sitter for the day. • Make sure to bring food and water. And remember plenty of treats: Dogs work really well when you bribe them to do what you want! • Some pets make a great ring bearer or flower girl. You could do a beautiful flower basket for the pet to carry down the aisle. If you use them as a ring bearer, you can do a DIY ring pillow around their neck. If you do this, though, use fake rings rather than tying on the real rings. Have the best man stick the real rings in his pocket.

PATTERING PAWS 9648 Olive Blvd., 991-5322, patteringpawsllc.com Make your vacation fun and stress-free for you and your pet: Book your pet’s vacation care in advance. Whether you choose a kennel, in-home caregiver or daily visitation, leave clear, concise directions with your pet’s caregiver, including feeding and walking schedules, medication doses and vet and emergency numbers. Have a backup plan in the event of travel changes or illness.

• For a dog on a leash, you can put a nice thick ribbon around their collar and flowers up the leash that match the wedding colors. • For pets that don’t do well on a leash, paint and decorate a wagon in your color scheme, and put a ‘Here comes the bride’ sign on the back. Then have a mature flower girl, ring bearer or junior bridesmaid pull the wagon with the pets inside.

EVEN THE BEST-TRAINED ANIMAL, BE IT A DOG, CAT, POTBELLY PIG OR HORSE, CAN GET OVERWHELMED IN LARGE GROUPS, SO FOGERTY HAS THESE TIPS FOR INCLUDING YOUR PETS IN SPIRIT: • If you’re a pet person, chances are your friends are, too. Use a pet-friendly hotel and indicate that on your invitations with the accommodation information. • Snap photos of your pets holding a sign around their neck or in their mouth with the table numbers. Then frame them and place them on the tables.

STL LABRADOODLE 378-9634, stlouisaustralianlabradoodles.com

The authentic Australian labradoodle raised right here in St. Louis. No need to have your puppy shipped to you. Medium-sized dogs reach 25 to 35 pounds when mature. Colors range from cream to red and apricot.

• In lieu of favors, make a donation to your favorite animal charity. • Do a dessert buffet and include treats for your guests’ pets. You can have a sign that says something like “A treat for you and your four-legged friend, too.”

A TRANSATLANTIC CRUISE

PHOTOS BY HOWARD AND ALICE HANDELMAN

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

M

ENTION A TRANSATLANtic cruise and thoughts come to mind of Champagne and caviar, white-gloved service and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. However, cruise lines have allowed us to fast-forward from the era when these journeys were designed for only the very rich and famous. A transatlantic cruise today may describe an ocean crossing or repositioning cruise—affordable for many and unknown to most. Available most months of the year, you can now travel to uncommon ports of call as a cruise ship relocates to a new region. These voyages are reasonably priced because cruise lines do not want empty ships during the crossing. We set sail on our first repositioning cruise with 13 other St. Louisans. Our initial thoughts were that BY ALICE HANDELMAN

we might be bored with so much leisure time and no sight of land for seven days. In truth, there was not a moment of boredom aboard the ship, which offered an endless assortment of exciting activities for every guest, no matter what their age. From the Champagne welcome reception to our final day on the water, we soon realized that there is more to see, do and learn at sea than we ever imagined. Our ship, The Liberty of the Seas, cruises the South of Spain in the summer and fall, and the Caribbean in the winter months. We sailed the first seven days from Barcelona, Spain, with stops in Cartegena, Malaga, Seville, and finally Tenerife and La Palma in the Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa. We spent the next seven days in transit from La Palma, Canary Islands, to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., a distance of 3,363 nautical miles. Most food and entertainment were included. Although most people think of an overabundance

of food and midnight buffets when speaking of cruises, there were so many activities that we had to find time to slow down to relish the lavish spreads, sit-down meals or fully loaded kosher hot dogs and shakes at Johnny Rocket’s. Bridge and mahjong consumed a few hours each afternoon for many of us, while some enjoyed table tennis battles at sea. We were proud to join the Atlantic Team, a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation. For a $10 donation, we were given the opportunity to walk, run or stroll for 30-minute intervals. The crew estimated that if each stateroom donated $10, the ship would raise $20,000— enough to make four children’s dreams come true. While most people know cruise ships have swimming pools, this ship offered three different pools and outside spa areas. We all were given the chance to catch a wave right onboard. The catch of the day, as seen in the Barcelona marketplace

A butcher puts his products on display in the marketplace.

WE WATCHED GAUCHO DANCERS AND AN ICE SPECTACULAR, AND DANCED TO BIG BAND MUSIC AND THE SOUNDS OF GLENN MILLER AND BENNY GOODMAN. and enjoyed the 40-foot -long surf simulator that included wipeouts. Others took on the signature rock wall that climbs 40 feet above the deck for majestic views of the ocean, 200 feet below. We witnessed an all-out volleyball tournament and worked out in the state-of-the-art fitness center with oceanfront views. We watched gaucho dancers and an ice spectacular, and danced to big band music and the sounds of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. We also enjoyed karaoke, game shows, rumba and salsa dance classes, and big-screen movies. Enrichment options were plentiful, as well. We attended a painting demonstration with renowned artist Rob Kaz, absorbed history at lectures on Christopher Columbus and learned how to burn fat faster and maintain permanent weight loss. We played musical trivia and visited a piano bar nightly where we sang along to modern songs and oldies but goodies. There was bowling and Wii in the sports bar, group photos on the grand staircase, and the promenade was lined with boutiques and specialty shops selling everything from $5 sunglasses to duty-free designer clothing and priceless jewelry. Each night, we retired to our staterooms to find our bath towels turned into monkeys, dogs and elephants. When we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, we experienced no jet or sea lag. Because the ship had reminded us to turn our clocks back for five days, we were now on the same time as Florida, with many in our group signing up for yet another transatlantic cruise‌the cruise that used to be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

GREEN CORDONNIER & HOUSE

Strength to Face the Storm WHEN FACING AN IMPENDING DIVORCE, IT can feel like you are drowning in a tumultuous sea surrounded by major decisions about the most important aspects of your life. The family law firm of Green Cordonnier & House aims to be a life jacket for you during that time, helping you protect what matters the most, says partner Margo Green. “It’s very important that the attorney you choose to guide you through that process understands the traumatic nature of the situation. You may not be able to see clearly at that moment, but with so many years of experience, we are confident that we can guide you in the right direction.” That experience adds up to more than 100 years among the three partners: Green, Justin Cordonnier and Michelle House. Formed in 1999, the Clayton law firm offers a full-service approach covering all aspects of family law, including dissolution of marriage, motions to modify, enforcement of judgments, paternity cases, custody and visitation issues, and contempt and post-divorce motions. The partners’ expertise in such matters is evident in their abilities to help their clients,

as well as their outside contributions. House and Cordonnier are members of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, while Green and House have written the chapters on child custody and post-dissolution matters, respectively, for the Missouri Bar’s handbook for multiple years. For each client, the firm uses a team approach, with a partner working with a paralegal and one of three associate attorneys. “Each team knows everything there is to know about a specific case, so a client is getting the full services of everyone,” Green explains. “A family law attorney has to be aware of many different kinds of law because the cases involve everything from real estate, probate and tax law—we wear a lot of different hats.” And if issues arise in a specific field, the firm will take the extra steps to find outside experts on that subject matter, she adds. As a boutique firm, Green Cordonnier & House offers a personalized focus for each client, where he or she is not just a number. The attorneys are on-call 24 hours a day, available to resolve emergency issues along the way. Knowing that the Continued on page 72

Include Social Media Rules in your Missouri Parenting Plan Stange Law Firm, PC In the past, we have written about the increasing role social media is playing in divorces. However, outside of things like Facebook being used to try and paint one parent in a negative light or prove infidelity, parents who are going through a divorce are increasingly being encouraged to establish rules regarding how images of the children can be used on social media sites. These rules should be included in the child custody agreement. When thinking about social media and children, parents should keep in mind that social networking sites, such as Facebook, are very popular in today’s culture and are a great way to share information with friends and family. So while it can be argued to allow some photos of children on those sites, parents need to make sure the pictures are being seen by the right people. For example, while a father may be okay with his ex-wife posting photos on her

Facebook page, would he be okay with those same family photos being used on her online dating profile? These are the types of questions that need to be asked and answered when coming to an agreement. Keep in mind things like privacy settings, what websites are off limits for photos of the children and what the context of the images will be should all be discussed. Larry Ganong, a professor of human development and family studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia, points to the importance of finding a balance when it comes to technology after a divorce. For some parents, especially ones who have a hard time getting along, being able to edit before sending texts and messages may help in terms of communication. However, there still needs to be clear rules to stop the situation from becoming hostile.

In Missouri, parents are required to submit proposed parenting plans when filing paperwork with the courts related to child custody and visitation. Working with an attorney, parents can include their social media plans in this parenting plan. If you are facing a family law issue, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We have lawyers available to discuss options with you and work to find a solution that meets your family’s needs. When you retain Stange Law Firm, PC, you will work with accomplished lawyers who focus their practice on family law. We use our extensive knowledge of the law and passion for justice to get the best possible results for our clients. Because of our enthusiasm about getting results for you, clients are given almost unparalleled access to their lawyer. When you become a client at Stange Law Firm, PC, you can access your file online through Your Case Tracker. You can comment on these documents and receive answers from Stange Law Firm, PC quickly and efficiently. Clients receive their lawyer’s personal cell phone numbers and swift responses to their e-mails and phone calls. Potential clients also receive a free, one hour consultation. There is a growing weariness of protracted, expensive litigation, and an increasing demand for realistic, early analysis of the issues. Clients are more educated about the basics of the process and seek to utilize the specialization of experienced practitioners to sort out or litigate the thornier issues, as opposed to simply launching an all-out war and hoping for success. Our clients appreciated the attention, and we were able to better understand valuations on businesses and home appraisals so that when we made property divisions for our clients, it was with a fully informed background based on factual information. More cases settled last year than in past years, showing that people want to avoid litigation if possible. This year, we look forward to providing compassionate and professional representation to our family law clients.

tough economic climate, an aging baby boomer population and the high prevalence of social-media use are predicted to create the biggest hurdles for local attorneys and their clients this year. Social media is continuing to cause a stir in family law courtrooms. And clients’ use of popular interactive media can work against them, warns Michelle Spirn of Growe Eisen Karlen. Particularly during childcustody battles, text and photo postings related to participation in negative activities such as drinking or extra-marital relationships before a divorce is finalized can reflect badly on clients. “I continue to encourage my clients to be very careful with their postings on Facebook and other social media during family law litigation, since these postings can be used against them in ways they likely did not anticipate,” Spirn notes. Another challenging topic in the family law field is related to out-ofstate relocation of a divorced parent and his or her children. “The stakes are frequently very high in terms of a client’s potential acceptance of a new job or commitment to a new marriage,” Spirn says. The cases require extensive research on the relocating client’s part, from finding a new home, school district and activities for children in the proposed new city to presenting all of the information in a positive light to a judge. As baby boomers age, a frequent issue in the corporate law field has become battles over businesses. James Dankenbring at Spencer Fane Britt & Browne says the corporate world’s demographics are changing as family businesses are passed from one generation to the next. A common issue arising during this transition is shareholder dissension, he explains. “When you have shareholder dissension and greed, it really can be contentious for an otherwise successful company.” This legal fight among shareholders can sidetrack the business from its goals. So Dankenbring recommends first trying to find solutions outside the courtroom. “More often than not, we engage psychologists, consultants and mediators to go about solving a business dispute in a nonthreatening legal environment.” Dankenbring says the alternative is a legal battle that can be stressful, expensive and polarizing for all parties involved with the company. David Lemkemeier of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh says hot-button topics in commercial real estate this year will continue to be the availability of financing, public incentives and market demand. “Our commercial real estate practice handles real estate transactions both regionally and nationally, so we see a lot of variety in how these factors play out depending on the location of a transaction, and have ample opportunities to help assemble creative deal structures.” Lemkemeier says commercial real estate transactions can be challenging from a market demand, cost and financing perspective in today’s economic climate. “Often, the viability of a deal depends on a combination of conventional financing, equity investment, and public-private partnership utilizing incentives like real estate tax abatement.” Multiple parties handle each step of the deals’ negotiation and documentation. “Managing the legal components of these multi-party transactions in an efficient and timely manner with a successful outcome is often By Brittany Nay

few years back, I shared with you some fairly personal information about my legs.

It had to do with the amazing way they responded to a medically based form of fitness training that I had taken up in 2006. Performed on special equipment under the supervision of a wonderful physical therapist named Casey Breslin, my workouts took about 20 minutes a week. Like many of you, I had been skeptical when I first heard about this approach. I mean, 20 minutes a WEEK? It went against everything I'd ever been taught. But, as we say in radio: the legs don't lie. And mine had never been better. At age 49, I could run 12 miles around Forest Park pain-free. I was barely winded.

So what has happened since then, you might wonder? After all, how many times have you known people who were gung ho on some health and fitness regimen, only to find themselves right back where they started a few months later? That's why I'm back today with an update. Are you ready? My legs – in fact, my entire body – are stronger and more fit than ever. I notice it when I'm hiking or kicking the soccer ball with my kids or when I'm doing yard work. Even my posture is better. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking: Charlie, this is not much of a story. But it should be. You see, after age 30, most people lose eight to 10 pounds of muscle a decade. By the time you reach my age – 53 – the speed of muscle loss roars into high gear – unless you do something to reverse it. This matters because muscle, it turns out, is the gatekeeper of longterm health. Next to quitting smoking, doctors now say the single most important thing an adult can do to live a longer, healthier life is to build strength. That – along with the fact that I have two young children I need to keep up with – is why I started going to 20 Minutes to Fitness six years ago. It is why I continue to go today. That's the funny thing about exercise: it really only works if you CONTINUE to do it. No fitness regimen will do any lasting good if you join up as a New Year's resolution and quit by March. But 20 minutes, once a week? That is something I can stick with. It works with my busy schedule. It doesn't bore or injure me. Plus, it has the added benefit of actually working. 20 Minutes to Fitness. Yes, that's my workout – and I'm sticking to it.

Ladue

THE SACHS FAMILY WHEN SUSIE and Jonathan Sachs started looking for a new home about five years ago, the couple knew they wanted to stay in Ladue. While Jonathan, who works at CSI Leasing, is from Atlanta; Susie, a stay-at-home mom, is from the area and attended Ladue H.S. With three children—Rebecca, 10; Jessica, 8; and Andrew, 2—the family appreciates the high quality of the Ladue School District, as well as the closeness of their preferred shops and restaurants. Susie recently spoke with LN to discuss more about her favorite aspects of the community. What is the best-kept secrete in Ladue? I have been going to Monteleone’s Fine Tailoring in the Schnucks Plaza at Clayton Road and Lindbergh Boulevard. ever since I was young. I think it’s a place that not as many people know about, and they just do a great job.

What is your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? They just brought this back last year after many years, but for homecoming this past October, Ladue High School held a parade through the neighborhoods from the middle school to the high school, and we participated, which was so much fun. I was a Ladue cheerleader and my daughter got to wear my old jacket in the parade.

Sally Stephen, Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty To start, Ladue is in a prime location with great highway access and it’s easy to get anywhere. There’s also its unique character—there is nowhere else like Ladue in St. Louis. It has maintained the small-town feel with boutiques instead of big malls or stores, and I also believe that the quality of life is superior. The schools are excellent and people who have children gravitate toward Ladue because of its reputation.

What are some of your favorite places in town? We love Lester’s—it’s so quick, convenient and very kid-friendly—and in the summer, we like to walk to Chill or Baskin Robbins to get ice cream. I also enjoy the small boutiques like MACS Designs, where you can get some really unique blouses and shirts, or Vie for upscale items for special occasions. And I love Schnarr’s Hardware—they have such great service and I want to support the family-owned businesses.

Clayton THE DONOHUE FAMILY ST. LOUIS NATIVES STACY and Patrick Donohue moved to Clayton for its central location, walking community feel and exceptional school district. Stacy, a stay-at-home mom, and her husband, Patrick, who is in medical sales, have two kids, 10-year-old Andrew and eight-year-old Sarah, who each attend Meramec Elementary School. The family also has two English Cocker Spaniels— Cooper and Bourbon. Stacy spoke more about what they love in Clayton. What are your favorite gathering spots in your neighborhood? We are steps away from all the restaurants and shops in downtown Clayton. Our favorite spots seem to revolve around food and drinks. The kids love to walk to Chill Frozen Yogurt. We love an evening out at Tani Sushi Bistro or Barcelona Tapas. And taking a walk or a run down Wydown Boulevard on a beautiful spring or fall day, then stopping at Starbucks before coming home, is probably one of our most favorite things to do. What do you like best about living in Clayton? The best thing about living in Clayton is the beauty. The tree-lined streets and the unique architecture of each and every home continue to leave us in awe. This neighborhood has such a rich history. We feel blessed to be able to share all that the community of Clayton has to offer with the lifelong friends we have met. What’s your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? We are a hockey family, so we truly enjoy the fireworks kickoff festivities on opening night of the Shaw Park Ice Rink. The kids love the tradition of heading over to the Shaw Park Aquatic Center with their classmates on the last day of school to kick off the start of summer vacation.

Ann Farwell, Gladys Manion Real Estate The City of Clayton is an inner ring suburb that serves as the St. Louis County seat. It has a thriving business district, with corporate offices, charming shops and wonderful restaurants. It is definitely a walking community with a cosmopolitan, yet smalltown feel. The residential areas are quiet and offer a variety of options, from rentals to privately owned Shaw Park Aquatic Center condos and stately homes. The award-winning Clayton schools are a huge attraction to families. Top this off with Clayton’s central location, minutes from downtown and the airport via a convenient network of freeways, and you have a winning combination. BY BRITTANY NAY

THE WALKER FAMILY WHEN THE WALKER family moved to Frontenac five years ago, they immediately were greeted with a friendly welcome. Stephanie, a North Carolina native, is a currently non-practicing attorney and homemaker; and her husband Chip, originally from Virginia, is a managing director at Wells Fargo Advisors. The couple has two children, 9-year-old Thornton and 8-year-old Emmi, who attend Conway Elementary. Simon, a yellow Labrador; Macie, a Goldendoodle; and a cat, Trixie, are the family pets. Stephanie told us more about what she and her family enjoy in Frontenac. What’s the best-kept secret in Frontenac? The Easter Egg Hunt at The Old Meeting House on Geyer Road. What are your favorite gathering spots in your neighborhood? I enjoy Via Vino with friends, Fleming’s is always an option for a great meal, and Plaza Frontenac makes Chip’s holiday shopping easy. What’s an ideal way to spend a lazy afternoon in Frontenac? Grilling pizzas by the pool when it’s warm, and Cajun deep-frying turkeys for our friends on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve when it’s cold. What’s your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? Sledding on the hills at the old Ladue Schools Early Childhood Center—if we could only get a good snow!

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES John Ryan, The Ryan Tradition, Coldwell Banker Gundaker Frontenac is located in the heart of St. Louis County’s central corridor, with a diverse housing stock served by the Ladue and Kirkwood school districts. In addition to a broad choice in housing, the city has wonderful amenities. Restaurants include St. Louis classic Kreis’ Steakhouse & Bar and premier national chains Fleming’s, Brio’s and BrickTop’s. Plaza Frontenac, anchored by Saks and Neiman Marcus, is one of the nation’s most sophisticated malls; and the Frontenac Hilton is the most convenient hotel in the central corridor. You can even buy a Honda or play indoor tennis in Frontenac.

Town & Country THE STATER-BIERK FAMILY W H E N S TA C E Y S ta te r a n d M a rk Bierk decided to start a family, they wanted to find a bigger house on a bigger lot. Moving f ro m K i r k wo o d , Stacey, associate general counsel for Monsanto, and her husband, the owner of Logo Masters, found their ideal home in Town & Country. Living within walking distance of Queeny Park, the couple spends plenty of time there with their children, Clay, 13, and Layne, 10, and their three dogs, Jake, Jed and Rocky. Their Mason Valley neighborhood is particularly close-knit, holding events like the annual Labor Day picnic and winter progressive dinner. Stacey took a few minutes to discuss more with LN why her family enjoys living in Town & Country. What do you like best about living in Town & Country? Our neighborhood is so friendly and I appreciate that our neighbors look out for my kids—it’s the whole ‘it takes a village’ concept. There is a lot of investment in maintaining the homes in the area, as well. The location of Town & Country also is great—you can get to downtown fairly easily to enjoy all that it has to offer, but there is plenty of green space and big lots. While there is not a ton of commercial development, which contributes to the quality of life and open feel, we are close to places like Straub’s for groceries and Mike Duffy’s to gather with family and friends. What is the best-kept secret in the area? I would say it’s Longview Farm Park. It’s a neat park and they have events there like the Turkey Trot 5K after Thanksgiving, but then there’s the house on the property, as well. The city has invested in rehabbing and preserving the home on Longview Farm, and it’s a great place to host events like baby showers or meetings. It also is great to see the therapy horses in the park as you drive down Clayton Road.

Wildwood THE ARMBRUSTER FAMILY SHORTLY AFTER MARRYING, John and Linda Armbruster built their first home in Wildwood, attracted to the area by the affordability and relative closeness to their new combined families. Almost 15 years later, that appeal became stronger as their family has grown, with three young girls: Julia, 9; Laura, 7; and Amanda, 6. John, a computer programmer, and Linda, a teacher at Conway School in Ladue, appreciate the family-oriented community and proximity to everything they need. We asked Linda to detail some of her family’s favorite things about Wildwood.

Market ready

real estate

What are some of your favorite spots around town? We live very close to Town Center, and we use the extensive trail system that runs throughout the central part of Wildwood to walk up there. We enjoy going to the small movie theater there, B&B Theater, the frozen yogurt place, Twist, or Happy Go Lucky Outfitters, where they sell Life is Good clothing. What’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in Wildwood? We’d probably hit the Wildwood Greenway Trail with our bikes; or, if we’re feeling more adventurous, try the trails in Rockwood Reservation. If we end up at Town Center, we’ll stop to get ice cream, of course. We also use the Hamilton-Carr Greenway in the summer when we ride on the Wabash Frisco and Pacific Railway, which is a fabulous steam locomotive ride along the Meramec River—it’s a great hidden treasure in Wildwood. What is your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? There are a lot of great family activities, but we never miss the Wildwood Easter Egg Hunt. There are a ton of families who participate and it’s quite the sight to see those eggs disappear in a matter of minutes. It’s a big event, with food, clowns and a band. Our kids enjoy it so much they ask about it every year.

THE HUNT FAMILY Residents o f t h e C reve Coeur area for almost 14 years, J i l l a n d Sea n Hunt originally moved to their neighborhood to gain access to the Ladue school district as they b e ga n h av i n g children. Now parents to 11-year-old Lauren, 9-year-old twins Shannon and Connor, and McSorley, the family’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel, the couple enjoys the area and the closeness of the location to other family members. Sean is a director at Express Scripts while Jill works at her family’s property management company, RM of Missouri. We spoke with Jill to learn more about life in Creve Coeur. What do you like best about living in Creve Coeur? It’s nice that you’re close to everything. There are grocery stores, shops and restaurants right nearby, but then you’re also 15 to 20 minutes away from anywhere else you want to go. It’s great that the airport is just 15 minutes away—it’s so convenient, but it doesn’t feel like you’re living that close to it. I also appreciate that Creve Coeur is building more sidewalks and making the city more walkable—our kids love to walk up to FroYo. What are some of your favorite spots around town? We’ve been going to Bristol’s for years. It’s one of the original seafood restaurants in St. Louis, and it’s always consistently good. It also has great happy hour specials! We also enjoy Oishi Sushi—I think it has some of the best sushi around and it’s very reasonably priced—and the new location of the Wine and Cheese Place is very nice, as well. What’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in Creve Coeur? We would probably go out to lunch—maybe at the new Potbelly Sandwich Shop on Olive Boulevard—and then to Beirne Park for awhile, which we love. Our kids have always enjoyed the playground, and we like to play tennis there, as well.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES Kathleen Lovett, Janet McAfee Real Estate Creve Coeur is a well-established city with residents who take pride in their community. Des Peres THE BORBONUS FAMILY TERESA BORBONUS HAS a long history with Des Peres, having moved there with her family when she was just 2 years old. Later in life, after living in University City, Teresa and her husband, John, an associate circuit court judge for St. Louis County, returned to Des Peres, moving into her childhood home. The couple lived there with their children, Bella 11; Evie, 9; and Gia, 7, before moving to a new home in a different part of Des Peres last year. Teresa took a few minutes recently to discuss her family’s love for the neighborhood. What is the best-kept secret in Des Peres? The amount of outdoor things to do here. Des Peres has a number of great parks, including some small ones that people might not know about. They’re a great gathering place for school events, families and friends. We love Des Peres Park—you can do everything from taking walks and playing soccer to fishing or having a picnic. What do you like best about living here? Everything is right here at your fingertips, from shops and restaurants to grocery stores like the new Schnucks and Dierbergs. We also have The Lodge, which is an amazing community center. It’s such a friendly community. While our old house and new house are in different parts of Des Peres, the welcoming nature is everywhere. It’s not just a smile when you’re walking down the street and pass a neighbor, but stopping to ask, How’s your mother doing? How is school going for the kids? What’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in Des Peres? We would probably ride our bikes through the neighborhoods, walk to friends’ houses, or go up to The Lodge. On the way home, we might stop at The Daily Bread, which is such a neat restaurant with a great mix of people always there. And of course, a stop at Sweet Be’s—it’s a great little candy shop and toy store, and my kids love it.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES Rita Hall Brinkmann, Prudential Select Properties Des Peres is a treasure in mid-county, with its tree-lined streets, friendly neighborhoods and superb quality of life. You will find streets filled with joggers and cyclists, folks heading to concerts in Des Peres Park on a Friday evening or just taking a stroll around the lake! The Lodge recreation center offers many activities for young and old, while the Kirkwood school district, West County shopping mall, and locally owned cafes and shops offer everyone all the conveniences.

Central West End The Pennick-Smith Family AFTER LIVING IN Chicago for a few years, St. Louis natives Annie Pennick and John Smith returned home shortly before the birth of their son, Evan. Missing the urban, walkable lifestyle that Chicago offered, the couple moved to the Central West End in fall 2011. Anne, a faculty manager for Kaplan’s online classes, and husband John, an attorney with Callis, Papa, Hale & Szewczyk, appreciate the closeness of everything the CWE has to offer, as well as the diversity of their neighbors. We asked Anne to share more about the appeal of the Central West End. What are some of your favorite spots in the neighborhood? We live closest to the intersection of Maryland and Euclid, which is one of the hubs of the Central West End. We’ll stop by Coffee Cartel to get a cup of coffee and people-watch, or go across the street to Drunken Fish—Evan (now 3) actually likes sushi, and they’re great with him there. At the other intersection of Euclid and McPherson, we’ll go to Left Bank Books regularly; and that area has a couple of our favorite restaurants: Pi and Dressel’s. And we’re excited for the opening of the new taco place, Gringo, from the owners of Pi. What’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in the CWE? We might start the day with brunch, maybe at the West End Grill and Pub, where we’ve eaten a few times. Then we’d walk back toward Maryland and Euclid, so Evan can play at the fountain in Maryland Plaza, then head to the library (Schlafly branch) so he can pick out some books and a couple movies. We might stop by FroYo on the way home, or if John has his way, we’ll go by Lester’s to watch whatever sports game is on. What’s the family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? A lot of people know about the adult Halloween party here, but there’s also a children’s parade during the day, which is great. They close off the streets and have lots of family-oriented activities, and everyone goes trick-or-treating at the stores and restaurants. The neighborhood also has a Christmas event in December with a petting zoo, children’s activities, pony rides (complete with reindeer antlers) and a visit from Santa. There’s also a window-decorating contest for the businesses, and the restaurants set up food and drinks outside. We’re looking forward to it again this year.

Kirkwood THE KOLMAN FAMILY THE KOLMAN family loves the urban appeal and small-town friendliness of K irkwood. Stephanie and Brian Kolman have four children: Charlotte, 10; Spencer, 8; Ethan, 7; and Chloe, 4. The family’s pets, Ashby and Murphy, are rescue dogs. Stephanie is a stay-at-home mom and freelance architectural designer, while Brian is VP of Brewer Machine and Gear. Their children attend Westchester Elementary and Kirkwood United Methodist Preschool. Stephanie filled us in on her family’s favorite things about their neighborhood. What’s the best-kept secret in Kirkwood? The diversity of small business in Kirkwood—there are amazing places for clothing, like Paperdolls, garden equipment, ethnic food and stationery. While shopping, I am always amazed to see how many out-of-town visitors have caught on to this secret! What are your favorite gathering spots in your neighborhood? We really enjoy a fun meal at Amigo’s Cantina with the kids. On nice days, we take the kids to Kirkwood Park or Pioneer Park to meet with friends. We also love to attend Pioneers’ football games! It is a good way to see everyone from all the different neighborhoods in Kirkwood. What’s your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? During the holidays, we always meet friends at a local Kirkwood restaurant, then spend the afternoon picking out the perfect tree at the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market. The Kirkwood Fourth of July fireworks are fun for us because we can see them from our back deck, which makes our house a popular place for friends.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES Rose Etzkorn, Prudential Alliance Realtors What homebuyers love about Kirkwood is that it is like living in ‘small town USA’ within a big city. They have a choice of historic or newer homes in a town where everything is within walking distance. We have a beautiful active train station run by volunteers, a grain and feed store, a bakery that smells like it did when you were a kid, and annual parades where residents sit on the curb and wave flags!

She is a technical writer with Trustforte C o r p o ra t i o n ; a n d her kids, Lucy Bloomstran, 11, and Reid Bloomstran, 9, attend Wilson School. We spoke with Shannon about what she and her family love most about living in Brentwood. What’s the best-kept secret in Brentwood? We have an awesome public library, and we love to walk or ride bikes there in the summer. What are your favorite gathering spots in your neighborhood? We have been known to head to Carl’s Drive In on occasion…OK, more than on occasion! What’s your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? Every Thanksgiving, we drive through Winter Wonderland in Tilles Park. What do you like best about living in Brentwood? Brentwood is like a small town in a big city. I like that I know my neighbors and that my kids can play outside. My daughter was walking our ancient dog a few weeks ago when a lady stopped her and said something like: I used to watch your mom push you in the baby stroller and walk your dog. Now I can watch you do the same thing. It made me very happy!

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES Katie McLaughlin, Laura McCarthy Real Estate Brentwood is not only centrally located, it also is one of the most neighborly and sought-after communities to live in St. Louis. The proximity to Clayton is convenient because of all the shops, businesses and restaurants, and its strong market helps increase Brentwood’s property values. I not only sell many homes in Brentwood, but I have personally lived there—it’s a wonderful place to call home.

University City Show-Stopper!

LNneighborhoods Ladue News Special Section

University City THE ROSS FAMILY A F T E R S T. L O U I S native Terry Ross met her future husband, Neal, in San Francisco, the couple moved back to her hometown in 2000. They were looking for the same quality of life they enjoyed in California and found it in University City, where they appreciate the urban setting and walkability of the neighborhood, while still living in a larger home. Their children, Finnegan, 9, and Charlotte (better known as ChiChi), 7, are able to walk to school and parks; and Terry, who works in marketing for College Bound, and Neal, who works in merchandising for CCA Global, enjoy the closeness of The Loop for date nights. We spoke with Terry to learn more about her family’s love for University City. What is the best-kept secret in University City? For me, it’s the fact that it has a great, eclectic, diverse population, but yet everyone is very passionate about what goes on here. We have neighbors of all ages and types, but we all have the same strong sense of community. Also, while it’s not such a secret anymore, we spend a lot of time at Winslow’s Home. We joke that we’ll never move because we don’t want to be farther away from the restaurant. We adore Chef Cary (McDowell), and it’s really a fabulous place for families. What’s an ideal way to spend a day in U. City? We would start by walking over to Winslow’s for breakfast, then walk to Flynn or Lewis Park — both are great spots for our kids to play. In the evening, my husband and I often have walking date nights to The Loop, and we are big fans of The Pageant or Blueberry Hill—we love going to hear good music. What’s your family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? We live in University Hills, and it’s our dream neighborhood. There’s a women’s league and they put on a ton of great events like the annual harvest moon party. There also are social activities like book clubs and wine nights. The neighborhood is just very welcoming—we are very close with our next-door neighbors and the whole community takes pride in taking care of their homes and looking out for each other.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES 7902 Teasdale 4 bedrooms, 3 full & 2 half baths $699,000 Magnificent newer home in lovely, established area is stylish and tastefully decorated with warm color palette. Expansive kitchen and great room combination, large entry way, lots of crown molding and high end finishes permeate the open floor plan. Beautifully finished lower level includes a media room, and the master suite with stunning bath and walk-in closet is so luxurious, you’ll never want to leave. Second floor laundry includes a washer and dryer that stays, and there is a well-sized deck and patio. Divine!

Crissy Chartrand, Janet McAfee Real Estate The vibrancy of University City is the big draw. You have these gorgeous neighborhoods with a great mix of architectural styles and a range of prices. From many of the neighborhoods, you can walk to The Loop with its diverse selection of restaurants, or ride your bike around Forest Park. I enjoy being near Washington University and feeling the energy of the students. We have a great dog park, are close to Metrolink stations, and live right in the shadow of Clayton. It’s a fabulous place to live!

Olivette THE LEVY-THOMECZEK FAMILY IN 1990, WHEN JOANNE LEVY was ready to buy her first home, she returned to Olivette, where she had lived for the first few years of her life. Levy, VP of ROi, found a home in Chevy Chase and fell back in love with the area. After marrying Jim Thomeczek, an attorney with Thomeczek and Brink, their growing family dictated a move in 2001 to a bigger house just a halfmile away, in order to keep their kids in Old Bonhomme Elementary. Parents to Samantha, 25; Jake, 21; Jerry, 19; Mari, 16; and Josh, 12, the couple loves the diversity of the people, architecture and neighborhoods that Olivette offers. We asked JoAnne and Jim to share more about the community. What’s the best-kept secret in Olivette? We think Old Bonhomme school is somewhat of a best-kept secret. It’s a terrific school and the diversity of the population is so great—there are so many different nationalities represented amongst the student body and there’s a focus on teaching the kids about different cultures, races and religions. Also, Sugarfire Smokehouse—it’s a great new restaurant, the food is fabulous and it’s a fun place to go with the family. And we just discovered that L’École Academy has a great lunch that’s open to the public.

What are some of your favorite places in the area? We eat at Mei Hua Chinese Restaurant all the time. We see people we know there, and the owners have seen our children grow up. When our kids get to choose their birthday dinner location, they quite frequently will choose Mei Hua—it’s a special place for us. Stacy Park also is a fun place to spend an afternoon. All of our kids have played sports there and the park has summer concerts every year, which are just a blast. It’s really just a lovely park with a nice walking path through and around it. What is the family’s favorite neighborhood tradition? Although we don’t live there anymore, a lot of people in Olivette know that the place to be on Halloween is Chevy Chase. We would have 200 to 250 kids come by our house. All of the houses are decorated, they close off the streets, and people hang out outside by fire pits—it’s one big community tradition and a lot of fun.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES Steve Mathes, Coldwell Banker Gundaker Olivette has a rare and wonderful combination of great schools with a close-in, sought-after location convenient to several area parks, the airport, shopping and restaurants. unreliable and second-hand gossip from around the world* LINDSAY LOHAN

COREY CLARK You may not recognize the name, but he really really wants you to. The American Idol cast-off from Season 2 first drew media attention when rumors circulated that he was having an affair with his then-Idol judge, Paula Abdul. Next, Clark joined a group of Idol rejects who claimed the show was racist. Now, Clark is once again suing the show, this time because the show explained that Clark’s elimination was due to an undisclosed arrest prior to the show’s airing. Hmmm, no talent, sex scandals, arrests and legal battles…this guy may very well Kardashian his way to the top.

NICKI MINAJ The wildly flamboyant rap star apparently is going through a rough patch with boyfriend Safaree Samuels. Apparently, Mr. Samuels was discovered in a bedroom during a private party getting busy with a porn starturned-aspiring actress. In his defense, it was a dimly lit room and the girl was wearing fuchsia lipstick, a neon green wig and a leopard jumpsuit…it was an honest mistake.

KE$HA The hot mess of a pop star has just inked a deal with MTV for her own reality show. My Crazy Beautiful Life will debut in upcoming months and will feature Ke$ha doing what she does best: rocking the party. I tell you, these kids today. I remember a time when if you wanted to watch a trashy girl get wasted, dance like a crack head, pick a fight for no reason and barf in the gutter, you simply had to walk around the corner to the nearest club. Have we really gotten that complacent as a society? *so don’t quote me. BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

The Ad Game

S

O, I DON’T KNOW IF YOU HEARD, but the Super Bowl was last weekend. The score is final at the end of the game, but that may very well be the only topic that is not open to debate. Did the refs screw up? Was the power outage a conspiracy to shift momentum? Well, I only heard one guy claiming that, but he also was licking parking meters. Within 10 minutes of the end of the halftime show, I got two separate texts, one of which read: Beyoncé killed it! She made Madonna look like a hack. The other one read: Beyoncé is dancing like her shoes are too tight. Then, of course there’s the Internet rumor that Beyoncé flashed an Illuminati symbol during the performance. If beyonce is a member of the Illuminati, I’m going to have to move in with that whacky minister who keeps predicting the end of the world. Without question, however, the greatest debates surrounding the Super Bowl are not over what happens on the field, they’re over what happens when play stops. The hot topic on Monday morning always seems to be the ads. With a few spectacular exceptions, the 2013 Super Bowl ads were—oh, what’s the word...lame. Let’s begin with the most egregious offenders: AXE APOLLO The ad features a gorgeous lifeguard rescuing a bikini-clad damsel from a shark attack. Once safe on the beach, she is immediately distracted by a dorky guy in full astronaut attire. The tagline: Nothing beats an astronaut. I get it. If you don’t look like Bradley Cooper, spray yourself with this product—which can only be described as a combination of car deodorizer and Pine Sol—and you will get girls. That being said, the last Apollo mission launch was in 1972, I’m guessing about 20 years before the target demographic was born. Are they even making the connection?

Debbie Baldwin

TANGENTIAL THINKER

VOLKSWAGEN I will admit I chuckled at this ad—a guy making everybody in his Joe-job office lighthearted and carefree with nothing more than a Jamaican accent and a VW Bug. But a German car company, an American group of coworkers and a Jamaican accent? Granted, a German accent doesn’t do much to lighten the mood... TACO BELL A group of seniors bust out of their retirement home and live like reckless teens—getting tattoos, making out, and of course eating Taco Bell. Talk about missing your target demographic. The visual may put me off tacos permanently. The big reason this was an unusual year, though, was that the real winners were not the funny ads—in fact, Doritos, Century 21 and Kia all pretty much duffed it. Oprah narrating the Jeep ad about our soldiers coming home was a big winner. Second runner up: Paul Harvey reading So God Made a Farmer for Dodge Ram trucks literally silenced the room. But of course, without exception—and I say this without bias toward my city or my beer—was the Budweiser ad, Brotherhood, where the loving trainer raises the Clydesdale from infancy to become part of the team. You know when the die-hard Ravens fan holding the remote rewinds a commercial to watch it again, it’s a good ad—a really good ad. So football is over for now, giving us all a nice breather… just in time for spring training.

The train wreck of a former actress showed up late once again to a Los Angeles court appearance looking exhausted and disheveled. Lohan had little excuse for her tardiness other than she was under the weather. The judge was unsympathetic and immediately turned to addressing the laundry list of misdemeanor charges against her relating to a car accident earlier last year. And in related news: The sun rose this morning, and puppies are cute.

THEATER REVIEW

Movie Dos

F

EBRUARY IS FINALLY HERE, WHICH MEANS OSCAR season is finally here. Nevertheless, the hangover of the January curse still lingers. So I have compiled a list of dos and don’ts, if you are so inclined to head to the theater in the next couple of weeks. These are the dos. Lincoln Yes, it moves at a glacial pace, but it may very well be the role of Daniel Day-Lewis’ career. And it’s not just Day-Lewis, the acting all around is Oscar-worthy. Argo Ben Affleck directs and stars in this incredible film about a group of government operatives posing as a film crew in a risky attempt to extract a group of Americans trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis. The Impossible This has to be the feel-good movie of the year. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star as parents of three young boys who are separated when the tsunami hits Thailand. Silver Linings Playbook I still think this movie is over-rated. It is, nevertheless, a very charming and well-acted romantic comedy. Les Miserables Victor Hugo would be proud. Django Unchained If anyone can make vicious, disturbing violence not just entertaining but funny, it’s Quentin Tarantino.

Movie Don’ts

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical STORY Tick is an Australian drag queen who performs regularly in Sydney. One night, he receives a call from his ex-wife, who says she needs a favor: She’d like him to perform at her casino in Alice Springs in the Outback. She also wants him to reconnect with his young son, Benji, who hasn’t seen his father in years and has been asking about him and his life in ‘show business.’ Tick decides to make the trip, and enlists the aid of his friend, Bernadette, a transsexual who has just lost her husband, and Adam, a wise-cracking, show-stealing drag queen. The trio boards a used camper they christen Priscilla and leave the bright lights of Sydney for the clear nights of Alice Springs.

HIGHLIGHTS A 1994 film of the same title became the basis for the most successful Australian musical of all time. Both the movie and musical garnered awards for costume design, including a Tony for the 2011 Broadway adaptation, and it’s easy to understand why. ‘Fun Facts’ from the production: Note that there are more than 500 costumes, 60 wigs, 150 pairs of shoes and more than 200 hats and headdresses used in the show.

MUSICAL: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical GROUP: Touring Production VENUE: Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand Blvd. DATES: Through Feb. 10 TICKETS: $15$66; 534-1111 or metrotix.com RATING: A 3 on a scale of 1-to-5.

Wade McCollum brings a sweet poignancy to the role of Tick/ Mitzi, especially as he wistfully sings I Say a Little Prayer. Scott Willis is subdued and reflective as Bernadette, who finds romance in the desert in the person of an amiable mechanic named Bob, played satisfactorily by Joe Hart. Bryan West makes the most of his flamboyant role as Adam, aka Felicia, camping it up outrageously, which leads to some harrowing moments with the townsfolk they meet along their journey. Chelsea Zeno has the unfortunate role of Cynthia, Bob’s Asian wife, who brings out the worst in stereotyping in the one-time English penal colony, particularly in a bizarre number titled Pop Muzik that utilizes ping-pong balls in most distressing ways. As you’ve probably guessed by now, Priscilla definitely is not for younger audiences, considering its subject matter and haphazard sprinkling of four-letter words throughout. Priscilla is as ostentatious as its namesake van, but a pleasant enough excursion into riotous and ribald territory.

DINING OUT

The Tavern Kitchen & Bar

Taste Test

A

The St. Louis culinary scene got some national recognition from a couple of national sources recently. New York Post columnist PAUL BRADY singled out several local restaurants and microbreweries in a recent column titled Beyond The BBQ In St. Louis. The list includes new eateries Pastaria, Nico and Seoul Taco; and microbrew hangouts Tap Room and Six Row Brewing Company.

COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, we reviewed The Tavern Kitchen & Bar, which at the time had just opened in Valley Park, and came away suitably impressed. We’d heard talk of some menu revisions of late, so it was decided a return trip was in order. Much has remained the same over the past two years, including the delicious Parmesan pull-apart bread to start. And the selection of appetizers remained plentiful and interesting. We had to try the Angry Bastards ($12) based on the name alone, five blackened shrimp accented with a jalapeno butter that included Stone Arrogant Bastard ale and topped with micro-greens. The biggest change to the Tavern’s offerings since our last go-round was the addition of a variety of Tasting Boards, which featured small samplings of some of the entree selections. They proved to be a flavorful way to get a taste of a broad cross-section of the menu. We chose the JH Trio ($30) and the Oak Plank ($29). The trio — named after executive chef Justin Haifley—consisted of some items from the Off The Hook selections: blackened ahi in a bacon bleu cheese butter; sesame mahi mahi in a thai coconut curry sauce; and Atlantic salmon with soy sauce. Of the three, the mahi mahi really stood out, thanks to the curry sauce, which had a nice balance of heat and sweetness. The ahi, though, was oddly paired with a cream corn that while tasty, didn’t do much to accent the fish. The Oak Plank was a medley of some of the main meat dishes listed under On The Farm: the bacon-wrapped meatloaf, chicken saltimbocca, pork tenderloin and filet ‘Loco Moco.’ The meatloaf, nestled on a bed of pureed Yukon Gold potatoes, was a particular favorite during the first visit, and we’re pleased to report it was every bit as delicious as we remembered. The rare filet was beautifully accented by a fried egg on top and a madeira sauce below. At first glance, it would seem a chicken dish would be overshadowed by

Also up for some serious congratulations is local microbrewery Perennial Artisan Ales. The brewery’s Abraxas seasonal, a delicious stout brewed with ancho chilies, cacao nibs, vanilla beans and cinnamon recently got a coveted 100-point designation from Beer Advocate co-founder JASON ALSTROM. GreenBEAN Delivery, a company that offers home delivery of local and organic produce and groceries, has now added St. Louis to its list of participating cities. Learn more about the company and its services at greenbeandelivery.com. MX Movies, the new movie theater at the MX Building downtown featuring first-run flicks and culinary goodness courtesy of chef JOSH GALLIANO, has officially opened its doors. The theater boasts 345 seats in three digital theaters and a menu of cocktails, microbrews, apps and larger dishes, as well as traditional movie theater food served to you at your seat. all that pork and beef, but the Saltimbocca, sort of a speidini-esque creation that often features veal, more than held its own. The texture of the crust set off the tender chicken underneath, and the sage risotto it was served on could’ve been a great side dish in and of itself. We paired the tasting boards with a bottle of Cloud Line pinot noir from Oregon ($44). It wasn’t much of a sipper on its own, but nicely accented almost everything we ordered. In addition to the meatloaf, we were quite fond of the donuts on the dessert menu last time; and as luck would have it, they were still available ($7). These fried globes of dough, rolled in cinnamon and served with a side of bacon creme, are still one of our favorite versions of this dessert. With a couple of years under its belt and food that remains both creative and delicious, it seems Tavern is poised to become a fixture on the culinary scene.

The two centers will be connected by a new drive as part of a plan to improve access and increase the number of parking spaces. A Great Rivers Greenway trail project also cuts between the two.
