American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri volunteered more than 61,000 hours during the regional flooding that occurred over the holidays. During the flood, 498 volunteers from 30 states came to the aid of local citizens, supplying 28,000 relief items and 57,000 meals and snacks. More than 500 homes were completely destroyed, but thanks to the efforts of Red Cross, people found comfort and renewed hope. The preview begins on page 12.

What’s your favorite Easter confection – and why? BETHANY CHRISTO It will always be the solid – never hollow – chocolate bunnies. Growing up, I made them last for weeks and weeks, almost to a fault. My dad and I always fought over who got to bite the head off, which is a little disturbing in retrospect.

Solid chocolate bunnies are the best. Of course, I eat the ears first, then slowly chip away at the rest of it for the next month.
BRITTANY NAY I love when the pastel-colored peanut M&M’s hit the Easter candy shelves. It’s a scrumptious sign of spring!

EDITOR EACH SUMMER, YOUNG BURN SURVIVORS FROM ACROSS Missouri travel to Camp Sabra in the Lake of the Ozarks to spend a week at Midwest Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC). The camp is sponsored by Burns Recovered, a nonprofit organization that provides programming and services to assist burn survivors in their recovery. In this week’s feature in The Daily section, we shine a spotlight on the free weeklong camp, where kids enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, canoeing and zip lining, as well as group activities including a talent show and dance. Camp director and St. Louis Fire Department fire captain Larry Conley says MCBC offers campers more than just recreation and team building, though – it also teaches empowerment and builds confidence for campers. “All the activities are fun but have intentional learning and character-building elements included,” Conley says. “We hope to build personal growth in campers by never letting them forget that who they are inside is way more valuable than the scars on the outside.” On Wed., March 9, at 5:30 p.m., Burns Recovered will host More Than a Fashion Show at Neiman Marcus St. Louis. Models will be escorted by burn survivors during the show emceed by local newscaster Jasmine Huda, and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be provided by a number of area restaurants. It’s our privilege to share inspiring stories from MCBC alums in this issue, as well as the important work that Burns Recovered is doing in the community. To learn more about the organization and the event at Neiman Marcus St. Louis, turn to page 60, or visit brsg.org. All the best,

We’re Sorry: In the Feb. 26 edition, Ms. Katie Komos should have been identified as the principal of Oak Hill School in our Preschool Profiles promotional section. We regret the unfortunate omission. Also in that issue, the table of contents misspelled Ben Poremba’s surname; this, too, we regret.

of
t dawn after a disaster, through the despair and wreckage, Americans count on help from Red Cross volunteers. When flooding devastated communities in Missouri and Illinois over the holidays, volunteers from the American Red Cross arrived at the water’s edge to give help and hope to neighbors in need. In total, some 498 trained volunteers from around the country left their homes to provide 707 shelter night stays, serve 56,983 meals and snacks and bring 27,919 comfort and clean up supplies to flood victims. “Our volunteers put their lives on hold during the holidays to respond to those whose lives had been devastated overnight. Our volunteers are real heroes,” regional CEO Cindy Erickson says. “That’s why our annual Heroes Breakfast recognizes neighbors who respond courageously to someone in critical need. Our annual breakfast is an inspirational morning that honors individuals like the Belleville West High School coach who risked missing his flight home to perform CPR on a stranger in the Minneapolis airport. This year’s heroes, like our volunteers, are shining examples of what it means to help others.” This kind of dedication and commitment will be on full display at the annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on April 15 at 7:45 a.m. at Union Station. The Red Cross hopes to raise $350,000 at its signature event to fuel their lifesaving mission.
HEROES BREAKFAST
By Amanda Dahl | Photo by Sarah Conard
“Everyone knows we respond to disasters, but people don’t realize that our workforce is more than 90 percent volunteers,” Erickson says. “Our responders also show up daily – at least three times a day – to take care of the family standing in the front lawn, watching their home burn. That’s a hero – someone willing to take that call, at any hour to help.” The Red Cross sees its fair share of tragedies, which makes it all the more important to recognize those who help people in need. “A 7-year old lost everything in the Norwood Courts apartment fire last year,” Erickson says. “A classmate posted a video to Facebook and raised $12,000 for his family.” Another story of undaunted courage occurred when three off-duty firefighters noticed a car fire. With no equipment immediately available, they pulled three unconscious people from the burning wreckage before the car imploded. Stories like these are heroic and inspiring, but to the brave volunteers who help save lives and spread hope through the Red Cross each day, it’s just part of the job. You too have what it takes to be a hero; the Red Cross teaches lifesaving techniques and provides 50 percent of the region’s blood supply. To donate, volunteer or give blood, visit redcross.org.
Learn how you can become an everyday hero by visiting redcross.org or by calling 314-516-2800.
WHEN: April 15 from 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. (registration starts at 7:15 a.m.) WHERE: Union Station, 1820 Market Street, St. Louis

Sunday, April 3, 2016 • 2:00-4:00 pm
Jewish Federation of St. Louis, 12 Millstone Campus Drive, 63146 Introduction by Todd Weinstein Musical Presentation by Rabbi James Stone Goodman and friends Dessert reception to follow in the Saul Brodsky Jewish Community Library; dietary laws observed. This program is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to AGoldfeder@JFedSTL.org or 314-442-3711 by March 28. Artist Todd Weinstein writes: In 1995, while traveling in Poland, with stops at Cracow and Auschwitz, I began working outside the photo-journalistic conventions of documentation. I started photographing abstract faces that I saw hiding in the shadows and light of different locations. From these 'ghost' pictures, these re-readings of found objects, came a set of 36 photos titled "The 36 Unknown," a reference to the idea in the Talmud, the oral tradition of Judaism, that the world requires a minimum of 36 righteous individuals in order to exist. In later lore, the 36 hidden ones have the power to save the world. To learn more about artist Todd Weinstein, visit ToddWeinstein.com.

Design DESTINATION AEGEAN SEA IN SANTORINI, GREECE
By Liz Miller
In Santorini, Greece, a shoal of bright whitewashed buildings is stacked tightly along the coastline, many of them accented with cobalt-blue domed roofs, gates, doors and trim. The pops of blue complement the waters of the adjacent Aegean Sea and, on most days, the shimmering sky above. White and blue define Santorini’s color palette, while earthy grays, pebbled streets and beautiful mosaics dot the landscape. The crescent-shaped island is also known as Thira and is located about 120 miles southeast of Greece’s mainland. The name Santorini can be traced back to the 13th-century Venetians, who named it for St. Irene. Today, the ancient city is a hugely popular tourist destination for its breathtaking white, red and black sand beaches, rich history and culture, fresh and delicious local food and drink – including just-caught seafood and Greek wine – and luxury resorts overlooking the sea. Whether you fly from Athens to Santorini or opt for the more scenic route by ferry from the port of Piraeus, a trip to sunny Santorini is as culturally rewarding as it is restful and relaxing. This high-fired porcelain vase offers a pop of personality and color for any sort of floral arrangement. Finished with a glossy glaze, the vase features real gold accents. Available through Jonathan Adler (jonathanadler.com)

a local staging company shares seven tips for preparing your home for the market.
T
he biggest investments of your life can be stressful ones. Buying a house is a massive investment, and wanting to get the most out of your investment when you go to sell it isn’t unreasonable. Staging is widely defined as getting a house ready for the market. By following the steps of a professional stager like Liz Connolly of INhance IT! Staging, you can make your home appealing to the widest range of buyers and help a house sell for what it’s worth. “You must be committed to getting your house ready for sale,” she says. “Buyers want rooms that are light and bright, meticulously clean, fresh and uncluttered. The more you do to prepare your house, the faster it will sell.”
after
Below, Connolly offers seven major tips for preparing your home for the market. 1. Perform a curb-through-basement assessment. Start at the curb and look at things like your mailbox, driveway, landscaping, front steps and porch, front door, welcome mat, exterior lighting, paint, siding and trim. Don’t forget to look up for cobwebs, insects and unsightly debris. Look at each area of the home, garage, deck, backyard and all interior living spaces with a critical eye. Ask yourself, “Would I accept this if I were buying this property?” 2. Clean. Cleaning doesn’t just apply to the visible interiors; it also is necessary for spaces like cupboards and closets. Don’t forget the basement, garage, porch, patio, baseboards, light fixtures, ceiling, fireplaces, carpets and curtains. If you can smell it, you can’t sell it. Connolly says most homeowners get used to the smell of their homes over time, so check for odor sources, and get the air ducts cleaned if need be. 3. Declutter. Connolly says clutter eats equity, and a cluttered home is stressful. Clutter is the stuff your spouse wants you to throw out that you refuse to part with: newspapers, magazines, stuffed animals, coupons, recipes, figurines. When you stage, you need to pack these items away or get rid of them entirely. 4. Paint. Painting is one of the least-expensive ways to prepare your house for sale. Remove wallpaper, touch up smudges and freshen up baseboards and trim. When preparing your house for sale, select neutral, light paint colors in pale grays or beiges. 5. Furnish correctly. In many cases, sellers have either too much furniture or furniture that is too large for the space. Staging is a case where less is more. Be sure to have at least a 3-foot walkway in all areas throughout the home. Store excess furniture either off-site or in an area of the basement or garage where it won’t look cluttered. In the opposite scenario, sellers have sparsely furnished or unfinished rooms. Connolly says it’s better to leave rooms empty than partially furnished. The best solution is to bring in rental furnishings to round out the design plan so buyers can envision the space. 6. Assess high-impact areas. Pay particular attention to influential spaces and designs including the kitchen, lighting, hardware, the master bath and the master bedroom. One key area to invest in is the kitchen: Buyers pay extra attention to its flooring. They’re also looking for solid countertops made of granite, quartz or the quartz compound Silestone. Appliances may need to be updated, and stainless is still the most-requested appliance type, according to Connolly. If major light fixtures are dated, they can be replaced easily and inexpensively. Drum light fixtures (with a fabric or neutral shade) blend with most existing fixtures. If hardware is dated, replace things like brass door handles, dated knobs and kitchen-cabinet pulls. In the master bath, buyers want luxury. If you replace carpet with vinyl, be sure to use a heavy vinyl that looks like tile. Replace floral or patterned bedding with fresh “hotel collection” white bedding in the master bedroom. 7. Plan ahead. Preparing your home requires detailed planning. There are so many elements that need to come together prior to putting your property on the market that it can be daunting. If you pack it now, you won’t have to pack it later when your house sells. Put together a schedule, and rely on an array of professionals to assist with the process.

Four common mistakes and misconceptions When staging Your home INhance IT! Staging’s Liz Connolly shares practices to avoid to ensure success:
after
1. Waiting to call the stager. Some sellers are embarrassed to have a stager come to their homes before they have “cleaned up.” They go ahead and paint and begin making repairs before the stager arrives. The paint color selected is typically not the right shade to appeal to the widest range of buyers, and at that point, the sellers have no funds left to repaint or do additional projects. 2. Putting the home on the market prior to staging. The biggest mistake most sellers make is taking the “wait-and-see” approach. They list the house without staging, and if it doesn’t sell in a few weeks or even months, then they stage it. It is very difficult to regain momentum once potential buyers have already been through the unstaged property. 3. Thinking staging and interior design are the same thing. Interior design is specific to the client and creates a very personal living environment. Home staging is the exact opposite. Staging depersonalizes the property to appeal to the widest range of buyers in the demographic area. Most of the seller’s personal collections, photos and so forth are packed away during the home-staging process. 4. Not ordering professional photography. Connolly recommends professional photography for all real estate listings, especially staged properties. If the seller has made the investment to stage his or her property, the agent owes it to the seller to secure professional photos to create outstanding marketing materials.

hen it comes to buying and selling houses, Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty is entirely focused on how to best serve the client. St. Louis-based Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty is an affiliate of Sotheby’s International Realty, which has a history dating back nearly 300 years. Here and now, in 2016, the company is more about service than it ever has been, says president Kerry Brooks. “Every single thing we do has our clients as the epicenter,” Brooks says. “Every way we advertise our listings is about our clients, and we’re always focused on what our agents bring to our clients.” Brooks says that though the process of buying and selling homes is difficult, the Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty team tries to make it as seamless as possible for both the seller and the buyer. “We want them to get to that closing day and have had – even in a complicated process – a positive

experience,” he says. The real estate company is able to provide that positive experience because it brings so much experience to the table. The Sotheby’s brand is one of the top brands in the world, Brooks says, and is also one of the oldest in the country. “[Sotheby’s] has 272 years of experience, and they’ve had the customer at the center for all those years,” Brooks says. He notes that if you “whittle that down” to a local aspect, Andy Dielmann has been in the real estate business for 40 years, and Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty is in its 11th year. “We don’t say here that our agents ‘work for’ our company,” Brooks says. “They partner their personal brand with the brand of Dielmann’s and of Sotheby’s. Those three create the highest tier of customer service. We’re very proud of that.” Brooks says that the two most important things to Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty are quality

and customer service. “Quality is first and foremost. That includes quality in advertising, quality in business dealings,” he says. “The other aspect is customer service. It’s about our dedication to helping buyers and sellers navigate this complicated process.” Brooks says the real estate market is “wonderful” in St. Louis right now, but that doesn’t make the process any easier. “Our agents need to be fully engaged in the lives of the people they’re representing,” he says. “Whether they have their eye on a certain neighborhood or a certain school district, our agents are expected to be incredible people to the clients they’re serving and connect them with the people they need to get a positive home-buying experience.” 8301 Maryland Ave., Ste. 100, Clayton, 314-725-0009, dielmannsothebysrealty.com

Seven Exterior Tips For Spring Maintenance 1.Clean debris from the gutters and downspouts. 2.Inspect drainage around the house. Be sure that downspouts direct water away from the foundation. The main cause of moisture in basements is poor drainage. 3.Test sump pumps. 4.Check the exterior siding materials for any deterioration & tuckpoint any open mortar joints in masonry. 5.Spray the exterior coils of the air conditioner with a garden hose to keep them clean and improve efficiency. 6.Shut down the humidifier. Close damper. 7.Power wash the sidewalk and parts of the house. This is an inexpensive way to improve your house and add curb appeal.

t. Louis is consistently acclaimed for its charitable citizens – and the city’s plethora of philanthropic events are routinely known by locals as havens for sharp dressing. It comes as no surprise, then, that the woman behind many of the area’s top charitable events has a passion for fashion. Even if you don’t know her, you’re aware of Christina Schellhardt’s work. As director of events and community outreach for SSM Health Foundations, she is the driving force behind fundraisers like the Glennon Gallop benefiting Danis Pediatric Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and the Cedric the Entertainer and Friends! gala at the Peabody Opera House benefiting SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. “My job is to share the gift and impact of giving through the development and execution of unforgettable, mission-oriented events and community-outreach programs for six hospitals in the SSM Health Foundations network,” Schellhardt says. “My life allows for a broad range of style, but I would say I wear sophisticated elegance and just-left-ofcreative for work, and bohemian for dates and play.” Her list of fashion icons is as varied as her wardrobe. “My obsession with sharp suits and slinky evening gowns came from Lauren Bacall,” Schellhardt says. “I secretly covet every kaftan in Diana Ross’ closet. Talitha Getty, Rachel Zoe and Kate Hudson inspire my bohemian flair and love of the ’70s, and there are those who say I dress like Prince.” Schellhardt tends to browse boutiques or shop online to uncover her unconventional finds. “I score amazing pieces when I travel, running in and out of boutiques without ever knowing the name of the shop,” she says. “Some of my best finds were purchased within a fiveminute scan from the front of a store before heading to an airport.” She does do some of her shopping in her home city, though. “When in St. Louis, I do love perusing the racks at Vie for stylish elegance, Free People for casual wear, Nordstrom for staples, Neiman Marcus Last Call for the best in designer bargains, TJ Maxx on Manchester for runway finds and The Vault by Women’s Closet Exchange for unexpected treasure.” Since she doesn’t shop for what’s hot during a current season, Schellhardt doesn’t have any spring 2016-specific favorites, but instead, she has a list of must-have items for the entire year. This includes over-the-knee boots, a long jersey dress, blue suede
platforms and more, she says. “My style used to be eclectic and all over the place in my 20s,” she explains. “Time and experience has allowed me to refine my style over the years.” Schellhardt says her outfits start with a shoe. “I don’t try on outfits, and I don’t change my mind when I dress,” she says. “If that outfit is not in its rightful place in my closet when I reach to grab it, I’m in trouble.” And when dressing for an event? Nothing changes, she explains, “unless the invitation communicates a
creative attire or costume. Then my brain goes into an instinctive creative process that usually results in a mad dash to my closet for something unique.” Speaking of events, Schellhardt has been working on a few exciting fundraisers that are sure to be St. Louis sensations. She lists June 16’s Game Shows at Ballpark Village benefiting Cardinal Glennon, the Glennon Gallop on Sept. 17 and this year’s Cedric gala on Oct. 22 as noteworthy happenings. Now you just have to decide what to wear.

ate last year, New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority began rolling out high heel-friendly sidewalk grates, with slip-resistant surfaces and smaller openings to prevent the stiletto death trap between crossbars. You don’t have to live on the Upper East Side to understand the love-hate relationship between women and their heels, however – at some point, we are all plagued by paper-thin insoles, delicate fabrics, slippery soles, unstable heels and perpetually worn-down heel tips. Back in 2012, Claire Flowers’ sales job required her to be constantly on the go. With territories that included several big cities, she was on her feet for most of the day, discovering that her $150-a-pop shoes couldn’t keep up with the rigors of airports, hotel lobbies and hoofing it through city streets to meet clients. “After two or three weeks of traveling through these cities, [the shoes] would be destroyed, and I would have to throw them away,” Flowers says. Even so, Flowers didn’t set out to fix the problem herself. “I was in Manhattan and wishing there were shoes that a professional could wear that were built more like Nikes but looked like Stuart Weitzman,” she says. “I started searching on Google for shoes that were durable – fashionable women’s shoes that don’t get stuck in grates – and didn’t find anything.” Flowers started looking for a domestic manufacturer who could make a small order of the shoes she had envisioned for her personal use, but she couldn’t find one. In her efforts to find a manufacturer overseas, she asked family and friends for leads, but instead she ended up with additional requests. “They said, ‘That’s a good idea; I want some for myself,’ and my order started getting larger and larger,” Flowers says. That’s when Flowers got to work. She filed for three patents, held a round of fundraising where several family and friends jumped in as investors, and embarked on weeks of travel through Europe and South America to find the right manufacturer. After more than a year of research and development getting each of her specific attributes and designs perfected, Flowers started her first round of production, debuting her footwear at a launch event in December 2014, held at Central West End boutique 10Denza. Since then, Flowers has brought on nine more retailers across four states that carry the Claire Flowers collection, including Cobblestone, Mister Guy The Women’s Store and Ivy Hill in the St. Louis area. Offerings in the debut collection, available in a variety of colors, cuts and fabrics, all follow the classic pump shape with a 3½-inch heel. Flowers does all of the designing herself. “I like shoes that transition from your workday to happy hour or, on the
weekends, to a cocktail dress,” she says. Flowers’ shoe styles add a pop of character – for example, The Barbara, which features a cheeky hot pink outsole and heel cap on a classic linen pump, or the Lauren, an ultrafeminine wingtip pump that comes in blue or red suede or brown or gold patent leather. The classic black pump is available in several iterations, including The Claire, Flowers’ best-seller, with a V-shaped vamp and gold plate at the heel; The Sarah, a black pump that features a studded tan-colored leather strip along the heel; and The Karen, studded along the top and the heel of the shoe, with the option of a hot-pink or natural heel cap. What truly sets Flowers’ product apart, however, is the shoes’ behind-the-scenes performance. For true day-to-night wearability, Flowers added a memory foam insole. To combat heels becoming worn down to the nail every other month, Flowers added a heel cap made of thermoplastic polyurethane, the same material used in roller-skate wheels, along with a wider base than most stilettos that adds stability and prevents them from being caught in sidewalk grates. For sprinting gate-to-gate at airports or across slick hotel lobbies and garage floors, Flowers added a treaded nonslip sole. And finally, to protect fabric from wear behind the heel from driving, Flowers added a row of edgy studs or a protective gold heel plate bearing her company logo. Since the launch of her first collection almost 15 months ago, Flowers has put her classic black pumps through the ultimate field test of near-constant wear – and they are, in her words, “still in pristine condition.” “I want people to buy more of my shoes because they love the style and they love the comfort, not because they have to replace them,” Flowers says. With a very grass-roots approach to sales and marketing, Flowers hosts shoe cocktail parties at various bars and boutiques, where attendees can try on and order shoes or buy them on the spot. She’s held four successful events here, with several more planned in St. Louis, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Birmingham, Alabama. Flowers’ styles have amassed a loyal band of followers and garnered interest from fashion bloggers across the country, but never one to quit while she is ahead, Flowers has plans to expand her shoe line this year, with sandals debuting this spring and a lower, 2½-inch heel in the works. For those of us who have come to embrace the mantra that “beauty is pain,” it might be time to reconsider. Claire Flowers, 314-221-8687, claireflowers.com

Here’s what’s on my mind this week:
1
Barry Odom saved a recruiting class. The Mizzou coach was dealing with serious obstacles. In the final week, he ended up landing the best two athletes in our town: Harry Ballard from McCluer North and Brendan Scales from Lafayette. The SEC East is still not a powerhouse. Odom has a great staff. The rebuilding of this program may not take that long at all.

2
Josh Heupel is the most important coach in the program right now. For the next six months, he has to have about 5,000 reps with quarterback Drew Lock. Lock has magnificent talent. He didn’t lose it. He was just a kid last year surrounded by a bad team and a bad game plan. If he develops, Mizzou will be just fine.

Mizzou basketball is another story. God bless Kim Anderson. It’s not his fault. However, can an A.D. keep the coaching staff around after losing 44 games in two years? I do like his freshman, though.

The first sign of age comes when you watch NBC’s Meet the Press instead of ESPN’s SportsCenter on Sunday. OK – I’m old.
Best story I’ve heard this month? Former Cardinals instructor and legend George Kissell made a promise to God. If God allowed his son to get to medical school, he would go to church every day. The kid got in. Kissell would often wear his uniform to church underneath his church clothes.

Jim Thomas asked Roger Goodell a question during Super Bowl week. Goodell said he told Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon he’d like to sit down and talk about the future of football in St. Louis. I need a large polo mallet – can you believe this man? Please go away, commish.

This outdoor hockey game at Busch Stadium is going to happen, and it’s going to be one of the coolest events we’ve ever had in our town. The Blues’ Tom Stillman and the Cards’ Bill DeWitt get along like ice cream and chocolate sauce.
A Brighter Summer Ahead

Major League Soccer needs an owner in our town. Commissioner Don Garber is actually going to help us find one. Imagine having a commissioner like that. I think it will end up like the Blues situation. One guy will be the leader, and there will be a bunch of investors.

Trump vs. Clinton will be as interesting as Ali vs. Frazier. And it will last a little longer. Nice to see former Billikens doing well. Chris Braun has built a fabulous sports-apparel business across the river. It’s called Winning Streak.
Cool idea by the Cardinals. They have brought back to the organization Jason Isringhausen, Braden Looper and Ryan Ludwick to mentor young players. Classy Cardinals will help the kids. Love the concept.

Speaking of class, I have never seen Orlando Pace in a bad mood. One of the best of his generation is now a Hall of Famer. We have two Hall of Fame offensive tackles now in town, Pace and Dan Dierdorf. They were great players and remain even better men.

Mothers With ADHD
By Russell Hyken
W
hat’s the difference between childhood and adult ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)? Well, basically, children generally have problems with concentration and difficulty following directions, and some also will be hyperactive and impulsive. Mothers with ADHD not only have such traditional symptoms, but also may struggle to manage the family schedule and keep homes organized. Being a mom, in general, is a hard job; life, however, can be extra difficult when you’re a parent with ADHD. Most mothers are so used to tending to the needs of others that they often overlook their own needs. This can result in depression or anxiety, which may be further enhanced by one’s attentional challenges. ADHD must be addressed as a family issue when mom has focus difficulties. Reassess your duties and assign tasks to your spouse and children. It might also make sense to hire some additional help. For an
ADHD mother, a housekeeper or babysitter may be less a luxury than an accommodation that allows you to manage your schedule without falling apart – which could really be expensive. It also is important to create defined structure. Without limits, inertia can set in, leading to chaos and disorganization. Say “no” to the things that are a poor use of your time. Managing your maternal boundaries will help you stay energized. And give yourself a break. Avoid setting the bar too high by comparing yourself to others. Your home doesn’t always have to look amazing. It is more important to create a happy environment than a perfect place. Having ADHD doesn’t make you a bad mother! On the contrary, having focus struggles gives you the ability to come up with creative solutions to everyday problems. Appreciate the gifts that ADHD offers, and channel your energy to create a loving, nurturing and exciting home for you and your family.

Camp COnfidenCe A free weeklong camp at Lake of the Ozarks teaches young burn survivors confidence and empowerment. By Connie Mitchell | Photos courtesy of Midwest Children’s Burn Camp
D
e’Ante Roberts still bears the scars from the scalding water than hit his tender skin when he was only 2 years old. You can see where the water burned him from just below his shoulders to his thighs. Now an 18-year-old preparing to pursue a college degree in international business, Roberts is emphatic that he’s not a “victim.” “I’m a burn survivor,” he says. That subtle but crucial change in outlook was brought about largely through Roberts’ experiences at the Midwest Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC), located in the Lake of the Ozarks. “I call the burn camp a miracleworker for burn survivors,” he says. Roberts attended the camp each summer from age 6 through 17, an annual experience that he credits with building his confidence and compassion. “When I was younger and my burns were more visible, I would go to public places like pools, and it would be hard for me to take off my shirt just because I was different from everybody else,” he says. “Going to the camp has made me more comfortable with myself.” It also gave Roberts important perspective in knowing that he wasn’t alone in his situation. In fact, some campers had much more visible and disfiguring scars, and friendships with them are what gave Roberts the ability to look past outward appearances. St. Louis Fire Department fire captain Larry Conley has served as camp director for the past four years. Known to campers as “Uncle Larry,” he rallies a lot of volunteers including firefighters, paramedics, occupational therapists and nurses. “I have worked all positions at the camp, and I think I was selected [as director] because of my empowerment management style and proven dedication to the mission of MCBC,” he says. “I’ve been at camp 14 years now, so I’ve seen kids become adults. Hopefully, the character nuggets we attempt to instill help as they grow through the years into adults.” Throughout the free weeklong camp, MCBC introduces campers to outdoor pursuits like fishing, canoeing, zip lines, and high and low ropes courses, as well as group activities including a talent show, dance and team building. “All the activities are fun but have intentional learning and character-building elements included,” Conley says. “We hope to build personal growth in campers by never letting them forget that who they are inside is way more valuable than the scars on the outside.” About 90 percent of MCBC campers return annually until they “age out,” according to Julie Peetz, executive director of Burns Recovered, a nonprofit organization
that provides programming and services to assist burn survivors in their recovery. In addition to MCBC, the organization sponsors peer support for burn survivors, a young-adult burn-survivor retreat, and burnprevention and education programs, as well as provides school re-entry support, treatment programs, housing assistance and scholarships for burn survivors. “Once they age out, they have to take a year off, and then at age 19 and 20, they can return as counselors-intraining. When they’re 21, they can become counselors,” Peetz explains. Roberts notes that this is his “off year,” but he plans to return for counselor training next year. Sharing the struggles and issues surrounding burn survivorship creates tight bonds among campers. “It is really a big family atmosphere because the kids know one another over so many years, and they grow up together,” Peetz says. “And when new campers join, the veteran campers are so welcoming to them. They love to show new campers around and really look out for one another. Being a burn survivor is pretty unique, and when they get together, there’s an instant connection.” Located in central Missouri at Camp Sabra, about 30 percent of MCBC campers are from out of state, according to Peetz. “We provide transportation via chartered buses, and Angel Flight also provides free personal flights for kids who live in isolated areas,” she adds. “Also, some fire departments provide transportation for some of the campers, as well.” MCBC is the only burn camp in Missouri, though there are others throughout the country, including one near Chicago and another in Colorado. Burns Recovered also employs a full-time social worker who provides one-on-one counseling for burn survivors. “In addition to being a clinically trained professional, our social worker is also a burn survivor who was burned over 66 percent of his body at the age of 18,” Peetz says. “With his combination of clinical and personal experience, he has an amazing connection with other survivors. He spends a significant amount of time at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in the burn unit with newly burned patients. He also works with them through their rehab and transition back to their homes, schools or workplaces.” Funding for MCBC and other Burns Recovered programs comes from tax-deductible donations and fundraisers. On Wed., March 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Neiman Marcus St. Louis, Burns Recovered will host More Than a Fashion Show. Models will be escorted by burn survivors during the show emceed by local newscaster Jasmine Huda, and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be provided by a number of area restaurants. Tickets and additional information are available at brsg.org.

eautiful: The Carol King Musical is being hailed by critics and the public alike as an inspiring, soaring tribute to a musical icon – and a whole lot of fun, to boot. To get in the proper celebratory mood before the St. Louis showing at The Fabulous Fox Theatre, head to The Fountain on Locust for some pre-performance nourishment. The Fountain on Locust is located on the strip of Locust previously known as Automotive Row, in the historic Supreme Car Co. building that once housed a Stutz dealership. This area of midtown has really taken off in recent years, and The Fountain on Locust was certainly one of the catalysts for this resurgence. The interior is replete with over-the-top Art Deco décor, highlighted by stunning murals that stretch across the

walls, not to mention the classiest bathrooms in town. There’s definitely a fun, retro vibe here. The highlight of the menu is the pages of ice cream delights, including a wealth of sweet and boozy creations, from ice cream martinis and adult floats to all manner of traditional nonalcoholic ice cream-fountain offerings like sundaes and egg creams. But although the restaurant may be best-known for these confections, it boasts an extensive food menu to peruse as well. The roster includes daily specials, an abundance of large and small plates, soups and salads, and then some. We started with some soup, specifically a bowl of the signature Polish dill-pickle soup ($5.99 bowl/$3.99 cup). This creamy potato-based soup has plenty of pop thanks to the crushed dill pickles in the mix. Following

this tangy start, we hit the main-fare plates, opting for the signature mixed-salad sandwich ($8.59) and the Fountain Cuban ($9.99). The mixed-salad sandwich is a tasty conglomeration of multiple varieties of lettuce, artichoke, tomato, roasted red pepper and onion that creates a nice array of textures and plenty of flavor. This mix is augmented by a house-made pesto dressing and melty Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, and all of this goodness is cradled by a crusty, fresh baguette. Chicken can also be added for a couple of bucks if you have a need for meat. The Cuban is a classic mashup of marinated pulled pork and ham, along with Swiss cheese and a Dijon sauce, again ensconced in a baguette. Although The Fountain’s adult ice cream beverages are quite delightful, there’s also a lengthy list of

The third category encompasses a plethora of classics like the Negroni and the Sazerac and custom seasonal creations like the Pink Slip ($8.50), a bright and flavorful combo of vodka and a trio of liqueurs: pomegranate, St. Germain elderflower and orange liqueur. tory: Carole Klein is talented, pretty and smart S – smart enough to skip two grades and enter Queens College in New York City at the age of 16. Her divorced mother wants her to become a teacher, but Carole yearns to be a songwriter. Armed with courage and a few tunes she’s written at the family piano, she heads to Manhattan and the offices of music maven Don Kirshner at 1650 Broadway. It’s the late 1950s, and she gains relatively easy access to Kirshner, who auditions Carole “King” on the spot. When she sings “It Might As Well Rain Until September,” he buys the song and encourages her to write more. At school, Carole meets a handsome young chemistry student named Gerry Goffin, who tells her he wants to be a playwright but also writes song lyrics. Soon the two are collaborating, selling their song “Some Kind of Wonderful” to Kirshner, who makes it a hit for the hot group The Drifters. When Carole becomes pregnant, Gerry offers to marry her. Subsequently, even though they’ve written a few hits, money remains tight, and the two move in with Carole’s mother. They share an office at 1650 Broadway, where they become friends with another pair of collaborating songwriters, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Among the four of them, they generate a long series of hits for artists as varied as The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, The Monkees, The Chiffons, The Righteous Brothers and The Animals. Gerry, though, chafes at his marriage, and following a number of his infidelities, the broken-hearted Carole gets a divorce and moves with their two daughters to Los Angeles. In 1971, she decides to record an album singing her own songs titled Tapestry, which wins four Grammy Awards and stays on the Billboard Top 100 chart for more than 300 weeks. Later that year, she performs at Carnegie Hall. Highlights: A jukebox musical with a book a bit heftier than is often the case with such shows, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a joy to hear and see performed. The touring company now playing at The Fabulous Fox Theatre brings verve and vivacity to more than two dozen hit tunes, mostly from the ’60s. Abby Mueller is easy to like in the title role, and director Marc Bruni keeps the two-act, 2½-hour show sailing along at a brisk and enjoyable pace. Other Info: Although the book by Douglas McGrath doesn’t delve as deeply into King’s life as Jersey Boys did when depicting the history of The Four Seasons, it does succeed in telling King’s story beyond her string of Top 40 singles, which were considerable. Mueller, whose sister Jessie performed as King in the Broadway production that debuted in 2014, bears a resemblance to Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men fame, at least from a distance, in scenes when King’s hair isn’t in its naturally frizzy state. She’s very good at drawing a portrait of King as an all-American girl who
wants a traditional family life as much as a career as a songwriter. Mueller’s voice nicely shapes familiar tunes such as “You’ve Got a Friend,” “So Far Away” and other King staples. Goffin is depicted as somewhat bipolar as a partial explanation for his womanizing behavior. Liam Tobin does OK with the largely unsympathetic role, showing the frustrated playwright as a man highly competitive in the songwriting arena but rather indifferent to his role as husband and father. Mann is written as a musical Woody Allen, replete with unconfirmed maladies as well as a knack for self-deprecating one-liners. Ben Fanhauser shines in the role and exhibits a smooth chemistry with Becky Gulsvig as the overly confident and driven Weil, who was determined to be independent and not stuck without a career like her mother. Gulsvig gets her share of laughs as Weil matches Mann’s one-liners with her own deadpan jokes. Curt Bouril is appealing as the affable Kirshner, even if it seems odd that unknown types could walk into his office so casually in McGrath’s book and banter with the boss before auditioning. Suzanne Grodner, who is up for a St. Louis Theater Circle award for her role last spring in The Rep’s production of Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike, plays the stereotypical Jewish New York mother to the hilt as Carole’s mom, Genie. Derek McLane’s evocative set design features a back wall resembling a collage of musical and recording symbols, flanked often by four performing “blocks” on two tiers where artists from Kirshner’s stable sing hits. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical effectively brings the heartfelt music of the award-winning singer/songwriter to the stage in an upbeat, inspiring fashion.

Kakao Chocolate molding process
Three local sweet shops share the hand-molded Easter confections offered this spring. Bissinger’s Handcrafted cHocolatier Bissinger’s scrumptious 15-inch, 2-pound handmade gourmet chocolate bunny has been the striking centerpiece for generations of local Easter celebrations. Because it serves not only as a sweet treat, but also as a work of art, it is one of the chocolatier’s best-sellers. Bissinger family confections date back to the 17th century, the time of King Louis XIV in France, according to Dave Owens, chief chocolatier and vice president of taste. “When Karl Bissinger came to the U.S. in 1845, he brought with him the family recipes,” Owens says, “and some are still used in our Easter items, such as the handcrafted marshmallow and luxurious crème centers found inside our beautiful and delicious chocolate eggs.” The chocolatier believes in preserving old-world techniques necessary for exquisite quality at its Near North Riverfront, Central West End and Frontenac locations, which is why it still uses copper kettles and prepares its recipes in small batches. “We hand-paint many items and hand-pull our caramel in the time-honored tradition,” Owens explains. “Although machinery can do some things extremely well and efficiently, we will never compromise the quality of our chocolate by finding faster ways to produce it.” This year, customers can hunt for Bissinger’s new elegant Easter gift boxes filled with its signature creamy milk and decadent dark chocolates. The chocolatier also is unveiling new confections, including caramel-glazed pecan halves, innovative chocolate bars and exotic new flavors of its Gummy Pandas. “We search the world for the perfect cocoas, spices and nuts, thoughtfully and responsibly made within our global community, using premium ingredients, fair-wage workers and sustainably responsible farmers,” Owens notes. Longtime customers love having Bissinger’s build their entire Easter basket (complete with a stuffed animal!), from its European hand-painted papiermâché eggs – brimming with Bissinger’s confections nestled inside – to its chocolate bunny ears peeking out of grass, as well as classic favorites such as glacéed oranges au chocolat, Parisian pecan-nut balls and Bear Claws Royale. “We’re honored Bissinger’s has become a tradition for many St. Louis families,” Owens says. 1600 N. s spring begins to bloom, handmade chocolate bunnies and crème eggs are bursting at local chocolatiers to celebrate Easter, destined for baskets and brunch spreads across the area. Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier, Crown Candy Kitchen and Kakao Chocolate are each carrying on their longstanding traditions of creating hand-molded Easter confections – much to the delight of generations of sweet tooths.
crown candy KitcHen Each Easter, Crown Candy Kitchen owner Andy Karandzieff hand-molds 10,000 solid chocolate bunnies – plus frogs, monkeys and more – using roughly 4,000 pounds of milk and dark chocolate. The century-old candy kitchen and deli’s signature offering is the Heavenly Hash Basket – a moldedchocolate basket overflowing with marshmallows covered in milk or dark chocolate, an assortment of crème eggs and much more – all amid grass in a gift box decorated by Karandzieff’s mother, Bessie. The family-owned and -operated business in Old North St. Louis has been crafting Easter candy since it opened 103 years ago, with the holiday’s offerings taking off in the ’50s when Karandzieff’s father, George, began collecting more chocolate molds – a selection that now stands at more than 50.
Today, the candy still is made the same way, and Karandzieff pours each piece himself. “My dad used to fill each mold using a ladle,” Karandzieff says. “Now I have a 450-pound chocolate machine that melts and tempers the chocolate. The biggest difference is the pump – it picks up the pace, but the overall process for one mold is still about 20 minutes.” Since the early ’90s, Easter has been the business’ biggest candy season, as many St. Louis families have made the shop a favorite stop for the holiday. “It’s great to have multiple generations coming back year after year,” Karandzieff says. 1401 St. Louis Ave., Old North St. Louis, St. Louis, 314-621-9650, crowncandykitchen.com
Kakao Chocolate bunny assortment
KaKao cHocolate With one adorable ear playfully flopped down, Kakao Chocolate’s signature chocolate bunny has returned as the sweet showpiece of its Easter offerings. In 2009, Kakao kicked off its line of cute confections to deliciously mark the holiday, which also includes hand-dipped truffles and caramels. “We never use any artificial flavors, colors, preservatives or sweeteners – just the best real ingredients – and we do everything by hand,” says Brian Pelletier, owner and chief chocolatier, adding that Kakao’s sea-salt caramels are by far the biggest seller, as are the chocolate bunnies. “Each truffle and caramel is dipped one at a time, and each bunny is made in a single mold, turned by hand until the chocolate sets.” Confectioners at all three of its St. Louis-area locations are constantly coming up with new candies
and flavors – maximizing the use of local ingredients like local herbs and honey in the springtime. “Because we’re always coming up with new flavors, customers can try something new every time they come in,” Pelletier says. “We are planning some fun new herb flavors, like rosemary and lavender, and we’re playing with a white chocolate-peanut butter meltaway that everyone is going to love.” Kakao has made all of its confection by hand in its nine years in business, one delightful and delectable chocolate bunny at a time. 7272 Manchester Road, Maplewood, 314-645-4446; 7720 Forsyth Blvd., Clayton, 314-726-7974; 2301 S.
