How do you embrace Irish arts and activities for St. Patrick’s Day? DIANE ANDERSON On St. Patrick’s Day anywhere in St. Louis, you’re automatically “Irish.” I use it to my advantage by telling a little “green” lie and saying I’m Irish to try to get a free drink or two. (It usually doesn’t work, but) you can’t blame a gal for trying – right?

TIMOTHY BRASHARES As much as I love Irish beer, I really look forward to the corned beef and cabbage with a little bit of horseradish sauce on the side paired with a solid stout.

SPECTACULAR PROPERTY BUILT IN THE TRADITION OF ST. LOUIS’ GRAND HOMES

BRITTANY NAY The St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown St. Louis always is a fun way to celebrate my Irish heritage!

The exterior is clad in limestone and the interior is finished in marble & exceptional details. Library was originally August Chouteau’s, a significant piece of history.

EDITOR ‌IT’S AN ESPECIALLY EXCITING TIME AT LADUE NEWS! LAST WEEK, our staff welcomed our new managing editor, Alecia Lassing, to the editorial team. Prior to joining Ladue News, Alecia served as news editor of the Ste. Genevieve Herald and news editor of the Macon Chronicle-Herald in Macon, Missouri. She brings with her a love of community-focused media and an eye for fashion and design. Beginning with the March 18 issue, Alecia will be taking over the editor’s letter and corner, as well as managing daily editorial production of the magazine. Please send all editorial pitches and inquiries to her at alassing@laduenews.com. I have so enjoyed my interim position with Ladue News, and I look forward to working closely with Alecia and the entire editorial team to produce compelling and engaging content each week. I will continue to oversee production of the magazine’s feature stories, and as always, I welcome your pitches and feedback to enrich the stories we tell in our Abode, Style, The Daily and Arts & Culture sections. Without further ado, please join me in welcoming Alecia to the Ladue News team! All the best, Liz Miller, Senior Editor

Editor’s Corner The word around town

Warm wishes to Michael Uthoff: After leading Dance St. Louis through 10 successful seasons as executive and artistic director, Uthoff recently announced his retirement. He will remain artistic director through the end of the 2015-16 season and stay on in an advisory capacity. Uthoff is an internationally renowned choreographer, teacher and dancer. Highlights of his tenure with Dance St. Louis include the creation of the region’s acclaimed Spring to Dance Festival, a showcase of 30 professional dance companies from across the country for three nights, as well as New Dance Horizons, an annual pairing of local dance companies with nationally recognized choreographers commissioned to create new works. The board of directors has appointed Janet Brown as interim executive director. Brown has served as operations and education director of Dance St. Louis since 2006 and has been instrumental Westminster College President Dr. Benjamin Akande at the installation ceremony.

By Robyn Dexter

s warmer weather approaches, St. Louisans are itching to hit the links and catch some rays. One of the best places to do just that is The Club at Porto Cima at the Lake of the Ozarks. Translated “hillside by the harbor,” Porto Cima is a Mediterranean-themed golf and boat community created to capture the natural beauty of the region, with multiple holes positioned on the water. The clubhouse boasts a golf shop, restaurant, exercise facilities, banquet facilities and more. Near the clubhouse, members will find the Yacht Club, which features the marina clubhouse, swimming pool, poolside dining, tennis and member docking.

In 2016, the club staff is making some changes and adding new activities. Beth Sullivan, the director of membership, says they’re trying to provide a more wellrounded experience for the entire family. “We’re doing a ‘new year, new club feel,’” she says. “we are accommodating younger families that are already in the area or who are moving here.” Sullivan says members have a lot to look forward to at the club this summer. The club has booked the Well Hungarians for Memorial Day weekend, and they’ve updated a lot of equipment. “We’ve added new furniture, fire pits, jungle gyms, croquet, bocce ball, new TVs and put new loungers around the pool area,” she says. “There’s all kinds of

things for kids to do – not just swimming.” Events for 2016 include an Easter egg hunt for kids, a car show in October, monthly special chef’s tables, ladies golf clinic, junior golf clinic, wine club events and much more. “We’re trying to expand from golfing,” Sullivan says. “Since we’re at the lake, there’s a lot of boating and poolside fun, along with golf, tennis, bocce and more.” Sullivan says the club’s goals for 2016 are to open it up to the younger crowd for more of an experience. “You don’t have to be a golfer to have a great time here,” she says. “The hope for this year is to open up to new families, both in the lake area and those who are moving here.”

hen their son moved out of the house to go to college in New York, these Clayton-based clients called on Maria DeGange of Dau Furniture to revamp his old bedroom. Their home is historical, and their son’s room still had many of the elements and pieces that had been there since he was little. After graduating from college, the son got married, and his parents wanted his childhood bedroom to be ready for the happy couple when they visited. “Because it’s a young couple, [the clients] wanted the room to look classic, but have sort of a new flare,” DeGange says. “The young man is a jazz lover, and he had some posters and art that he liked when he was living there.” DeGange decided that rather than pick and choose which of his jazz-themed art pieces to use, she would make a sort of collage on one of the walls. “I kept what he loved, but used it in a different way,” she says.

LocaL interior design experts share their favorite 2016 sofa trends.

By nancy robinson

T

he choice of a sofa frame and the accompanying fabric pattern and color palette frequently has more bearing on the overall design of a room than any other single furnishing. Indeed, sofas and their smaller counterparts, loveseats, often dictate the style of a space, whether it’s a living room, family room or small study. In most cases, the sofa or loveseat serves as a focal point and anchors the design of the rest of the room. Bearing in mind the pivotal design role that sofas play in defining a room’s style, we asked local retailers and designers to share their thoughts on key sofa trends for 2016 and how such trends can be incorporated into existing interiors.

uNDerstAteD eLegANce Those with a taste for old-school glamour will swoon for the new streamlined audrey sofa, the No. 1 trend pick of 2016 for Ethan allen interior designer Deborah McLaughlin. although not its namesake, the sofa captures the elegant and understated style of film star audrey Hepburn. Upholstered in a chic pastel-blue fabric approximating one of Pantone’s two 2016 Colors of the Year, Serenity, it features a gently curved camelback and gracefully flared arms. The result: a glamorous silhouette with a distinctly modern vibe, available at Ethan allen’s Chesterfield location. “This tight-back sofa requires little maintenance (no fluffing or fussing with back cushions), making it perfect for those with busy lifestyles,” McLaughlin says. “You can create your own look with this sofa by pairing it with timeless antiques or sleek, modern furniture. audrey is available in a variety of colors, patterns, textures and leathers, ensuring that this timeless style can be adapted to work with new trends for years to come.”

tuxeDo requireD Savvy Surrounding Style is the custom resource in Ladue known for its ability to design and procure furnishings in almost any style requested by customers. asked to pick her choice for 2016 sofa trend of the year, visual merchandiser and buyer Lindsey Jungk didn’t hesitate, choosing the tuxedo sofa originally made famous by interior designer Billy Baldwin. “The tuxedo-style sofa is well-known for its sleek, modern silhouette and follows the current trend toward glamorous, sophisticated interiors,” Jungk says. She describes the sofa as having straight arms the same height as the back, legs that are either upholstered or exposed, decorative tufts and no back cushions. Deep enough to lounge in comfortably, it isn’t fussy, and this style easily blends with more traditional and rounded shapes in a room, adding interest and a subtle edge. “For example, an angular tuxedo-style sofa complements chairs with a curvy English scroll arm beautifully, creating a space that is harmonious and well-balanced,” Jungk says. savvy surrounding style, 9753 Clayton Road, ladue, 314-432-7289, savvyladue.com

FreNch Art Deco In keeping with the overall trend in interiors toward streamlined designs, Edwin Pepper Interiors designer Carol Snyder chose a French art Deco sofa as her pick for the top sofa trend of the year. “art Deco has its origins dating back to the 1925 French art Exposition in Paris,” she says. “It was a period characterized by smooth lines, geometric shapes and streamlined forms. Now, almost 100 years later, this French art Deco-inspired sofa is a classic style that transcends time. The artful sculptural lines, as well as the tapered legs with contrasting brass caps, are a nod to the period. This sofa works beautifully with the transitional to contemporary styles of 2016 interiors.” edwin pepper Interiors, 1573 N. Warson Road, st. louis, 314-862-6339, edwinpepper.com

MoDerN BoheMiAN Meanwhile, at Expressions Furniture in Ladue, one of the sofa trends in store for 2016 is modern bohemian, which speaks to the growing appreciation for interiors with a curated and collected look. The Expressions sofa pictured here exemplifies how upholstered pieces can work within that trend. The classic English frame is taken in a decidedly eclectic direction with a mix of washed linens and velvets in colors with names like Tobacco, Chocolate, Bordeaux, Mulberry, Olive, absinthe and Spice. Like the tuxedo-style sofa from Savvy Surrounding Style, this frame features exposed legs and arms the same height as the back. However, the look is much more romantic, thanks to the gently curved sides and carvedwood details. anne Tipton, Expressions’ co-owner, says this sofa can work in a number of interior settings but is an especially good choice for those who prefer traditional and transitional styles with an edge. Of course, Expressions specializes in customization and offers many fabric- and wood-finish options to blend with existing furnishings. The upshot? You can style a bespoke boho sofa to meet your specific needs and wants – and rest assured you won’t see it anywhere but your own home. expressions Furniture, 7817 Clayton Road, st. louis, 314-567-6200, expressionsfurniturestl.com

WITH DECADES’ CAMERON SILVER

‌T

By Denise Kruse

he idea of fashion as art is a cornerstone of Los Angeles fashion philanthropist Cameron Silver’s philosophy. Owner and founder of Decades, LA’s foremost vintage boutique, Silver will merge the fine arts of fashion and music at Four Seasons of Fashion, a St. Louis Symphony benefit event to be held on April 4. Four Seasons of Fashion is sure to be a rich visual and auditory experience, featuring a runway presentation by Silver with classic couture from Versace, Christian Dior, YSL and more, set to a chamber performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. You’re such a prominent fixture in the international fashion world – what is your connection to St. Louis? I came up there a few years ago for the [Contemporary Art Museum’s 2010 benefit] Dada Ball, where we did a really impressive fashion show. I fell in love with the city and the people of the city. There’s such a great patronage of the arts and a love of fashion. It was an accident that I ended up getting involved with St. Louis, but St. Louis won me over. I think it’s a fantastic city. Historically, St. Louis was a very important part of the fashion industry, especially for shoes. St. Louis warehouses were the champions of the largest part of the footwear industry globally; there is a historic love of style and an industry that emanates from St. Louis that a lot of people don’t know about. For somebody from LA, we may not necessarily realize that St. Louis is this cultural and artistic and fashion-loving destination, but it really is. It is a city that is very socially responsible for its arts and education. That’s why participating in this project with the symphony is really rewarding. The women of St. Louis have great style. I’ve done trunk shows there. These women have style. How did the Four Seasons of Fashion show come about? I received an email about the possibility of doing a fashion show with the symphony, and I thought that was really interesting to have this concept of the four seasons. The idea of blending the classical-music arts with my model of treating fashion as an art, it’s always a nice way to present fashion. I enjoy those challenges. My background is in theater, and truthfully, a fashion show is theater, and now, it’s like a fashion show is a musical. This is a blending of my previous career in theater and my current career in fashion, and we’re putting on a show. What can guests expect from this performance? I love that great fashion should be timeless. Here we’re using timeless music – Vivaldi. It just shows that great art, great visual art, great theatrical arts, great musical arts, they can all join together to create something very modern. There’s a reason this music

56   LadueNews.com | March 11, 2016

remains relevant for centuries or decades – it’s because it’s high art. Your senses are going to be stimulated in so many ways. What inspired your choices for the runway? Are they all from Decades? Everything will come from LA; we’re going to do a passage of more historically relevant gowns form the 20th century. We also have archival Oscar de la Renta gowns from some of his last collections, so that will be fun. Who are your models? I think they’ll be local models. Who knows what local model is brewing from St. Louis? It might be the next Karlie Kloss. Anything else? Because I’m really just a guest there putting on a show, I’m just excited to interact with the audience and see the reaction. We’re going to bring a taste of

BEST FACE FORWARD

Unique Hair Tools You (Might) Need By Amy Koehler In this age of social-media bombardment, we’re constantly learning of countless essentials we never even knew we needed. I recently discovered some astonishing coiffing tools that are must-haves for every woman – or at least for every hair type. Curly Hair – The Curly Tee Towel ($19.99, Curly Tee). If you have curly locks, drying your hair with a terry towel likely causes frizz. Did you know drying it with a T-shirt will reduce that frizz? The people at Curly Tee have developed a wrap for your hair that’s perfect for binding wet hair, but doesn’t involve all the weight and bulk of an actual T-shirt. And the best part? A no-frizz do. Any Hair Type – The Wet Brush ($7.90, Ulta, Sally Beauty Supply). Even if you haven’t previously heard of this brush, you need one. Specifically designed for more give, it permits a user to brush wet hair without causing breakage. As the real kicker, though, it untangles wet hair better than anything else – especially good for tender scalps. Prone to Tangles – The Tangle Teezer ($15, Sephora, Sally Beauty Supply). Meant

60   LadueNews.com | March 11, 2016

to be used on dry hair, this product should become the new BFF of anyone with long locks or a tendency to tangles. It also helps to boost shine and soften, and its nifty handle-free shape makes it great for travel. Color-Treated Hair – Madison Reed Root Touch Up ($30, Sephora). Have you ever had your colorist cancel at the last minute, just before an important event? Whether you have a few grays peeking through or roots more than two shades darker or lighter than your natural hair color, Root Touch Up can be a lifesaver. Its powdered hair color helps you extend your days between colors. Long Hair – Invisibobble ($8, Urban Outfitters). This stay-in-place spiral hair tie resembles an old-fashioned phone cord, but leaves no indentations after hours of wear and doesn’t yank strands on removal. Also, you can stretch it greatly without damaging it, and it should last longer than a traditional hair tie. Braid Lovers – Oscar Blandi Braid Paste ($25, Amazon). I love braiding my hair, but I hate when my sleek braid starts to fall apart. This paste – a cream meant to be applied to wet hair – helps soft hair stay in place better and creates an awesomely textured look when you remove the braid. No-Time-to-Fix-It Hair – Asa Vea Heated Brush ($33.90, Amazon). Perfect for days when you lack time to dry and style your hair or when you just want to add volume back to an alreadystyled look, this brush smooths, shines, and speeds both drying and styling.

Let’s establish our brand’s identity as something unique – not just a stylish sock, but truly take the attributes of performance socks that you could use to go hike or ski and add that to a dress sock. – Chris Fetter

Chris and Tim Fetter

T

he long era of one-style-fits-all men’s fashions, swathed in predictable neutrals, has ended, with a veritable tidal wave of bright colors and bold patterns in tailored cuts taking its place. According to Fortune magazine, the growth of men’s fashion began outpacing women’s in 2013 and has shown no signs of slowing. A focus on personal appearance, the surge of businesscasual wear and “dressing down” of the workplace, and millennial access to disposable income has helped fuel this growth cycle. Men’s accessories have led the charge, with the proliferation of subscription services and online-exclusive retailers offering unique options to make even more of a personal-style statement. One local company, Unfettered Socks, founded by a trio of Washington University in St. Louis alumni – brothers Chris and Tim Fetter and Sarah Haselkorn – is breaking into the sock scene by introducing the concept of “performance socks” to a crowded market of novelty styles. “Any small men’s boutique will have five or 10 different brands,” Chris Fetter explains. “Rather than jump on that bandwagon, we thought, ‘Let’s establish our brand’s identity as something unique – not just a stylish sock, but truly take the attributes of performance socks that you could use to go hike or ski and add that to a dress sock.’” The idea came when Chris, who is in market development at Boston Scientific, was consulting Tim and Sarah about a class project at Wash U when he noticed Tim wearing a pair of wool ski socks with his dress clothes. In true big-brother form, Chris poked fun at Tim’s fashion gaffe, but the seed had been planted to create a sock combining the performance power of a highquality athletic sock with the look and fit of a dress sock. The partnership that formed among the three was very organic. “The three of us are really connected – we’re very kindred spirits,” Chris says. “We all ‘get’ each other.” Chris took on the role of chief executive officer; Tim, currently working in government affairs and finance at A-B InBev, is the company’s chief financial officer; and Sarah, a

brand manager at A-B InBev currently based in Miami, is the company’s chief technology officer, managing Unfettered Socks’ brand and digital presence. After reading about companies trying to create a performance dress sock with a team of engineers, the

Unfettered Socks team took a different approach. “We took our favorite dress sock and cut it off at the heel,” Chris says, “and then we took our favorite running sock, cut it, and literally asked my mom to sew them together.” After several iterations with various suppliers, the trio had a model for a sock that was a true hybrid of the two – a foot made of breathable, polyester-wrapped nylon that wicks away odor-causing sweat and a leg with a woolcotton blend. “[It’s] not like your dad’s Gold Toe,” Chris describes. “We made the elastic a little tighter so they stay up better than most dress socks.” Based on customer research and focus groups conducted among Wash U’s graduate and businessmaster students and staff, the trio established a threepillar value proposition on which they have built the Unfettered Socks identity. These pillars address the main problems men have with their dress socks, revealed through customer surveys: One, breathability – the

high-performance material keeps feet dry, comfortable and odor-free throughout the day; two, durability – a double-reinforced toe, foot pad and heel ensure sock-life longevity; and three, the newly coined “stay-up-ability” – a tighter elastic at the top of the leg prevents socks from slouching and sliding down. The Unfettered Socks line currently has three core designs, with a fourth in the works, to create the brand’s Core Four socks that will be available year-round. Limited-run designs from the company’s Springfield, Illinois-based graphic designer will round out the brand’s choices in color and pattern. One new sock, designed in collaboration with local 4 Hands Brewing Co. microbrewery, will land late this spring, coinciding with the launch of 4 Hands’ newest beer. Chris, Tim and Sarah also want to start a model of giving back to those in need in the St. Louis area and are planning to donate a portion of each sale of the 4 Hands collaboration sock to St. Louis-based charities. Chris also is very aware of the fact that at homeless shelters, one item needed perhaps more than any other, yet rarely donated, is socks. The Unfettered Socks team is working out a model that will enable them to donate socks to a domestic organization with every sock purchase. Unfettered Socks products are available through its website, as well as locally at Dapper Gents on Washington Avenue and Ladue Pharmacy. Chris tells us trunk shows are very likely to be in the company’s future, with a 2016 goal of growing its presence in the retail market. Long-term goals for the brand include moving production of the socks from overseas to stateside – ideally right here in St. Louis – to be a local brand in every sense of the word. “We are continuously trying to improve the product,” Chris says. “We want to be the ultimate dress sock – when you have no dirty laundry and your drawers are full, you reach for our sock first.” Unfettered Socks, unfetteredsocks.com

Intolerance: The New Iron Curtain

‌S

By Dr. Benjamin Akande

eventy years ago, on March 5, 1946, at Westminster College in Fulton, a statesman fired an opening volley in the Cold War. As a private citizen, he spoke truth to power on a matter weighing on his mind: the growing dominance of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. As President Harry Truman and others listened intently, Sir Winston Churchill warned against the growing Soviet influence in Europe, which seemed certain to halve the continent ideologically, with one half embracing freedom and democracy and the other intolerant of liberty and dissent, as well as totalitarian in outlook. “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent,” Churchill declared prophetically. He called for greater cooperation between the United States and Great Britain, the two great powers of the English-speaking world, to oppose the Soviet influence. The speech, “Sinews of Peace,” is the single contribution to historic oratory curtain, for which many people best remember him. A quarter of a century after the USSR’s collapse, another iron curtain apparently has descended – this time here. Intolerance forms today’s iron curtain. Such intolerance has divided our society into two camps. One celebrates and embraces change and diversity in thought, religion, ideology, ethnicity, gender and nationality and recognizes America’s biggest strength: its plurality. The other camp reveres intolerance. This divide has increased during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, perhaps the most fractious in more than half a century. Large segments of the population have been demonized for their religion, ethnicity, national origin or socio-economic status. The activities of hate groups also recently have spiked, with at least one hate group endorsing a presidential candidate. This political season could create lasting divisions in a nation already divided, with the new iron curtain of intolerance creating a second cold war, not between the U.S. and other nations, but within our own borders. In this nation increasingly, drastically differing perspectives prevent meaningful dialogue and the resolution of challenges to fairness, justice, education, economic prosperity and even health care. Seven decades after “Sinews of Peace,” several lessons linger from the statesman who skippered Britain from its darkest moments into its finest hour, lessons centering on resilience, the audacity of leadership and the ability of one person speaking at a small college in a small mid-American town to define the future. On May 6, 1992, again at Westminster, we witnessed the end of the Cold War in former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s speech “The River of Time and the Imperative of Action” – tidily bookending Churchill’s 1946 visit. And so, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Churchill’s effort to marshal the world against Soviet aggression, let us not allow history to repeat itself, with defeat and division impacting lifetimes. The C Suite Business Notes A Tribute to the Phenomenal Woman By Charlotte VM Ottley “‌ Though quiet, my mother was the master of the family’s destiny and nurtured us all to success, making us think we did it. But that’s how power works. Be careful who you take for granted; they could be the key to your success.” –An Ottley-ism Never has there been a time when women did not inspire, create, manage and even, on occasion, disrupt history. Even in seemingly subservient roles, our overt actions and skills are balanced by suggestions and strategies that have shaped more positive outcomes than not. The phenomenal woman often exhibits 10 attributes. She’s: 1. Gracefully Powerful. She can wear stiletto heels as well as flats with symbolic steel toes, helping others persevere and open doors previously closed by bias. As doors open, women can rise quickly – and some even go to the top. 2. Understanding. She “gets” it! She keeps her head when all around her lose theirs and spins circumstances

to everyone’s advantage. She favors long-term victories over short-term temporary wins. 3. Resourceful. Her compassion, reliability and responsiveness attract people in need. She neither fears helping others to climb nor condemns others to make herself greater. 4. Confident in the Face of Challenges: She instinctively survives against the odds and finds solutions to both the simplest and the greatest challenges. She fights for others with a sincere passion harder than they fight for themselves. 5. Three Times a Woman in Relationships. A trusted partner and anchor in business, she is the lover at home and her family’s caregiver, enjoying in return the small, priceless contributions of their support, appreciation and respect. 6. Spiritually Centered With Conviction. She seeks peace and harmony to share with and benefit those around her. She believes in something bigger and better than her. I call it God. 7. Compassionate. She rescues others without

reservation, obligation or expectation of favors in return. 8. Persistent and Resilient. Although she may bend, she seldom breaks. Bitterness and resentment have no place in her mind; only possibilities and opportunities prevail. 9. Wise. She is wise, sensitive and intuitive. She builds bridges and candidly shares, making it easier for others to follow. What she knows, she knows well. What she doesn’t, she willingly learns. 10. Strong and Invincible. The phenomenal woman, to paraphrase lines from Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman,” walks into a room just as cool as you please, her strength in the click of her heels, the bend of her hair, the palm of her hand, the need for her care. It’s the fire in her eyes and the flash of her teeth. She’s paid the price for losses and gains – remaining strong and invincible. She does things better again and again. Help her make it.

Happily Ever After

Baxter

AND THE

MAYUGA FAMILY ‌ONCE UPON A TIME, ED AND ANN Marie Mayuga fell in love with an English bulldog named Mr. President. They had him from a puppy, and he was a “character,” Ed Mayuga says. Mr. President became a fixture in the St. Louis English bulldog meet-up groups, and everyone loved him. The Mayugas wanted Mr. President to have a friend, so they adopted a French bulldog named Popcorn. “They were like peas in a pod,” Mayuga says. Unfortunately, Popcorn got cancer when he was around 8 years old. The Mayugas did a lot to try to save him, but the cancer took over, and they had to put him down in September 2013. Mr. President was lonely. He had lost his best friend. “We knew he needed a companion,” Mayuga says. “I was on Facebook and saw that Baxter needed a foster family.” St. Louis English Bulldog Rescue president Diana Engeszer brought Baxter over, and he and Mr. President played all afternoon. Mr. President, a senior dog by English bulldog standards, got overheated and was uncomfortable all night. The Mayugas found out the next morning that he had passed away overnight. “We had lost two amazing dogs in 10 days,” Mayuga says. It was a tough time for the Mayugas, but they decided to adopt Baxter. He helped them through the loss of Mr. President and Popcorn, and they even ended up adopting another bulldog: a French one named Bonaparte. “We owe a lot to St. Louis English Bulldog Rescue,” Mayuga says. “We don’t have any children, so our dogs are our children. A lot of times, people don’t want to adopt bulldogs because they only live about 8 or 9 years and often have health problems. But we’re so grateful for ours.”

By Robyn Dexter

Baxter and Bonaparte are healthy and spoiled. They wear matching outfits and get to go shopping with the Mayugas. Since the couple works out of their home, the bulldogs get a lot of attention. Baxter can be a bit mischievous at times, Mayuga says. “We have a guest bedroom with a low bed, and if the door is left open even a crack, we’ll find Baxter in there, buried under the pillows,” Mayuga says. “He makes a nest and buries himself.” The Mayugas speak highly of bulldogs as a breed, and Ed Mayuga says they’re like “little clowns.” “People who don’t know bulldogs often think they’re fierce,” he says. “Nothing is further from the truth. They’re sweet little lap dogs.” Baxter certainly has his quirks. Mayuga’s parents, who are retired and live down the street, watch the dogs from time to time. Occasionally, Baxter will get to whining, and Mayuga’s parents know just what to do. “He wants a car ride,” Mayuga says. “They’ll put him in the car and drive him in a 10-mile loop. He loves it.” Baxter absolutely loves Ann Marie Mayuga and will follow her all over the house, her spouse says. “If you don’t shut the bathroom door when you shower, he’ll be asleep and snoring on the bathmat when you get out,” he says. When all is said and done, Baxter and Bonaparte make the perfect companions to the Mayugas. “No matter how my day goes, they’re always there and so happy to see me,” Mayuga says. “I can’t imagine life without them.”

English country dancing is a grEat activity for gEtting social and gEtting moving.

M

ary Schmidt was entranced by the dance scenes in Pride and Prejudice. “I thought it was just beautiful,” she says of the English country dance in which the characters Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy turn elegantly around the dance floor, stepping through sequences that take them from one corner to another. “I was shocked to find that I could do that kind of dancing right here in St. Louis.” Schmidt is now chairwoman of the steering committee for Childgrove Country Dancers, a 37-yearold organization she learned about from one of her physical-therapy patients about six years ago. She rarely misses a chance to dance across the room, moving in patterns that form English country dance, as seen in Pride and Prejudice. Schmidt describes herself as an “active senior” and says the dances attract many other people who are 50 or older. Childgrove dances are open to all adults and always attract a wide age range. As a physical therapist, Schmidt also recognizes the benefits of dance for older people. Although English country dance is not considered an aerobic exercise, it does require and hone balance and involves continual movement and steps. The regular dances provide about two hours of continual movement at a walking pace and the mental exercise of remembering specific steps and patterns. “This is an appropriate activity for active seniors,”

74

LadueNews.com | march 11, 2016

Schmidt says. “However, from my experience with patients, we wouldn’t just suggest going to an English country-dance group for exercise. Balance and the ability to move quickly and grasp the movements and patterns would not be appropriate for some folks.” Schmidt does not want to discourage anyone from trying it, however. Beginners are invited to arrive 30 minutes before the group dancing begins to learn the basic steps and prompts that are called out during the dance. No formal training is needed, but practice allows for participation in more advanced dances. “The more you repeat, the easier it becomes,” says Missy Reisenleiter, a Childgrove board member and 16-year dancer with the group. “You’ll get the basics and will be able to enjoy it the first time you come. For those of us who have been doing this for a number of years, there are more difficult dances, and new dances are always being written.” English country dance dates to the mid-17th century, and Childgrove dancers enjoy four special balls each year in which they can dress up, some in period costumes, to honor the dance’s history. As a nonprofit organization established in 1979 for the enjoyment, support and continuing education of traditional dance, according to the organization’s mission statement, Childgrove also offers other types of group dancing, including waltz and contra dance, which is a communal folk dance that is slightly less complex than English country dance.

Accompanying the dancers are live musicians and callers familiar with the genre. “We have mainly one band that plays with us, The Tu Penny Players,” Reisenleiter says. “They are excellent, formally trained musicians who understand the connection between the music and the dancers following it. The configuration of the band may vary, and they determine who plays with them at each of the dances.” Violin and keyboard are standard and might be accompanied by flute, clarinet, additional strings or other instruments. Schmidt notes that there are hundreds of different English country dances, and most are found in books that contain the music and instructions for each specific dance. “We can access dances from long ago or from modern choreographers, and the callers look to vary the tempos, formations and difficulty levels,” she says. Patterns are formed from combinations of figures called out as circle, stars, casts and other terms. Above and beyond the physical benefits of English country dance, both Schmidt and Reisenleiter emphasize the social aspects of the activity. “We’re a very welcoming group and are always happy to see new faces among all our good friends,” Reisenleiter says. “It’s just great fun, and I always look forward to it.” Childgrove Country Dancers, childgrove.org

s scientists continue to study how memories develop, we wait patiently for a cure to the disease that can transform a person’s entire life by destroying his or her recollections. The St. Louis chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association devotes itself to improving the lives of those affected by this horrendous affliction. “It is [one of the only diseases] that really has no hope right now,” John Tracy, board member and CEO of DOT Foods, says. “But the Alzheimer’s Association is the leading nonprofit funder of research, [working diligently] to provide us that hope in slowing the disease down and finding a cure.” Motivated by this mission, Tracy has experienced the pain inflicted by the disease firsthand. “My dad died from the disease,” he shares. “His dad died from it as well. We’re in a family business, so it became personal not only for myself, but for my entire family and everyone in the business.” The Alzheimer’s Association aims to enlighten the public on the brutal effects of the illness – and the importance of detecting it at an early stage. “The organization provides care and support for people affected and, most importantly, the caregivers,” Tracy says. “We continue to reach out and network – connecting to people who aren’t aware of our services and the impact we have.” The Affair to Remember gala, one of the organization’s leading fundraising efforts, introduces the community to important research while raising

awareness and support for its lifesaving work. “The theme, ‘Meet Me at the Fair,’ takes a step backward to the World’s Fair, and the lineup is incredible,” chapter president Stacy Tew-Lovasz says. “Dr. John C. Morris, director and principal investigator at Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, will update us on the latest and greatest – some of it happening here in St. Louis – on world-renowned research. We’ll recognize people who have been with us for many years with awards. A step back to the past with this theme [actually] focuses on doing something about the future. To be able to do something about the future is truly compelling.” From major partnerships on down to families experiencing the disease, there are several ways to join the fight against Alzheimer’s. “Seventy-five percent of caregivers work – and half alter their work schedules to care for their loved ones,” Tew-Lovasz says. “Companies care about the impact this disease has on their employees, clients and community.” Major corporations, including Emerson and Edward Jones, show support through decade-long partnerships with the Alzheimer’s Association. Tew-Lovasz shares additional opportunities for individuals to have a meaningful impact on the disease, from taking part in upcoming events, such as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, to acting as an advocate in the state capitol. cheek, soppressata and duck pastrami, and various pickles and spreads. Arguably the most iconic of Scottish dishes is haggis, that glorious amalgam of oats and offal that’s loved and feared in equal measure, at least by American diners. It’s a personal favorite, and I’ve been lucky enough to have tasted many traditional versions in Scotland. The haggis at the Arms is every bit as good as anything I tasted in the U.K. But I was determined to try something different this time around so as not to get stuck in too much of a rut. I opted for the stuffed quails ($27), two delectable roasted birds packed with said haggis (OK, I may still be in a bit of a haggis rut after all) and plated with bubbles and squeak, that particular U.K. combo of roasted veggies – in this case,

carrots, potatoes and Brussels sprouts – served in a flavorful, rich orange-whisky sauce. Next came the filet Oscar ($34), a truly decadent fillet aged for 28 days and cooked a rosy midrare, topped with lump crab and finished with a béarnaise sauce. Of course, the Arms is known far and wide for its whiskies, particularly scotch. It’s even been named one of the “Great Whisky Bars of the World” by Whisky Magazine, so you know the selection is serious. In keeping with trying new things on this visit, I opted for a dram of 12-year-old BenRiach ($13) from Speyside, with plenty of honey and heather notes, instead of one of my usual peaty, smoky Islay favorites. merican Idiot, now playing at New Line Theatre, is a raucous tale of life, love, hopes and dreams, with plenty of political elements running through it as well. It’s the kind of show that begs to be dissected and discussed within the confines of a classic public house, where opinions flow as freely as the pints – a place like The Scottish Arms, the Central West End standard-bearer that features fine food and drink and a most convivial atmosphere. We started off with one of the Arms’ planks, large boards packed with meats, cheeses and various other delicacies meant to be shared. We ordered the House Plank ($18), a spread that included brie and Humboldt Fog cheeses, terrines of veggies and pork

drink named after the Scottish poet and featuring blended scotch, sweet vermouth, Benedictine and Peychaud’s bitters. The Arms also serves lunch and does a stellar weekend brunch, complete with an expansive bloody mary bar, and when the weather turns, the patio out back is one of the best around. Finally, although longtime chef Carl Hazel recently left the Arms for new endeavors and adventures, Arms fans should have no fear – Derek Northway has stepped into the breach and is doing good work behind the stoves.

Story: Johnny, Will and Tunny are three young men disenchanted with their empty lives in suburbia, circa 2004. To find meaning in their existence, they resolve to set off for the city in search of excitement and adventure. Before they leave, though, Will learns his girlfriend, Heather, is pregnant. He stays behind while trying to figure out the best and most honorable course to take. Johnny and Tunny arrive in the city, but soon thereafter, Tunny enlists in the Army and goes to war. Johnny succumbs to the temptations of drugs, which give him the courage to pursue a woman he calls “Whatsername.” The three become increasingly disillusioned despite their best intentions. Will’s lack of ambition aggravates Heather, while Tunny returns home, injured, from the war to recuperate under the care of a nurse known as “the Extraordinary Girl.” Johnny, meanwhile, falls in love with Whatsername. Can Johnny shake loose from his pusher, St. Jimmy, whom Whatsername tells him exists only in his own muddled mind? Can the three men reconcile with their own realities? Or have these three longtime friends become the “American idiots” they so abhorred before their journeys? Highlights: New Line Theatre is staging the first local production of this Tony Award-winning musical based on punk rock group Green Day’s hit 2004 concept album, American Idiot. With conductor Sue Goldford and her band delivering a raucous and resonating interpretation of the band’s music, meshed with boisterous performances by the cast under the careful direction of Scott Miller and Mike Dowdy, this American Idiot makes sense of the disaffection of youth in the post-9/11 United States. Other Info: American Idiot, which contains adult language and content, ran on Broadway for a little more than a year in 2010-11. It contains all of the songs from the Green Day album as well as several more from the band’s follow-up, 21st Century Breakdown, and other tunes written expressly for the musical. Lyrics are by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, with a book by him and Michael Mayer, who directed the Broadway production, and arrangements and orchestrations by composer Tom Kitt. New Line’s presentation superbly captures the musical essence of the album and show as well as making the most of the straightforward plot. Miller and Dowdy keep most of the production at a brisk pace over its one act and 90 minutes, although it does drag a little toward the end. There’s good work by the cast, which is led by Evan Fornachon as Johnny, Brendan Ochs as Will and Frederick Rice as Tunny. Chris Kernan is satisfactorily nasty as St. Jimmy, while the lads’ love interests are well portrayed by Sarah Porter as Whatsername,

Larissa White as Heather and Sicily Mathenia as the Extraordinary Girl. They’re supported by an energized ensemble comprising Kevin Corpuz, Cameisha Cotton, Clayton Humburg, Jeremy Hyatt, Omega Jones, Sean Michael, Ariel Saul, Tanya Sapp and Gabe Taylor. With the band at stage right, the ensemble is most effective when working at the center or stage left – the occasional use of the area in front of the band can be problematic for certain sightlines. Beyond even the solid acting, the best part of American Idiot definitely is Green Day’s pulsating, rocking tunes. Although the show is reminiscent of another Broadway rock musical, Spring Awakening, Green Day’s music sounds even better than that hit show’s. Under Goldford, the New Line Band delivers a sizzling performance featuring guitarists D. Mike Bauer and Aaron Doerr, bassist Andrew Gurney, percussionist Clancy Newell, violinist Twinda Murry and cellist Jessica Nations, with Goldford herself at piano. Armstrong’s winning combination of driving rock and sweet string sounds makes both the energized numbers and the winsome ballads accessible. Rob Lippert’s set design is simple but effective, featuring a small platform with two pairs of stairs that oversees the action below. A dozen or so chairs, a mattress and a hospital bed sit in front of a backdrop featuring a photo of Ronald Reagan and the word “obey” splattered across the screen numerous times to underscore the trio’s gritty, grim existence. You’ll likely find yourself swaying and tapping along with the many infectious Green Day tunes, which are well adapted to the stage. Ticket sales are brisk, so check out this smart, sophisticated version of American Idiot while you can.

St. Louis Irish Arts teaches traditional Emerald Isle music and dance to kids and adults.

A

s a young girl growing up in Limerick, Ireland, Helen Gannon learned to love the traditional Irish arts through stepdancing classes. So when she immigrated to St. Louis in 1967, she brought that tradition with her. Today, the former nurse and midwife serves as president of St. Louis Irish Arts, which teaches traditional Irish music and dance to kids aged 4 and above as well as adults. Launched in 1973 by the Boyer family in St. Louis and Bill McEvoy in New York, the local branch belongs to the worldwide organization Comhaltas (Irish for “association”). Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, since 1951, the nonprofit is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of traditional Irish music, with hundreds of local branches around the world. St. Louis’ branch has become the largest in North America, leading students in traditional Irish music, song and dance, as well as the Irish language. Located at the Immaculate Conception School in Maplewood, the organization holds classes for beginners (Mondays), intermediate students (Wednesdays) and advanced students (Tuesdays), with a month-long summer camp from June 6 to 26. More than 100 students currently attend the classes. “Anyone can participate,” Gannon says. “It is of particular interest to those who have Irish heritage, but it is also very attractive as an art form – so we attract all cultures.” Gannon, the first commissioned Irish dance teacher in Missouri, has passed on the Irish tradition to her children and grandchildren. Her daughter, Eileen, teaches the organization’s harp school, the largest in North America; her son, Niall, teaches the fiddle; and her husband, P.J., leads harmonica, singing and recitation. Four of her grandchildren also take classes at the school. Led by Gannon’s family and other experienced instructors who were former students of the school, the local branch’s classes include Irish step dancing, singing, recitation and music instruction on the harp, fiddle, flute, accordion, concertina (a free reed instrument similar to the accordion and harmonica), mandolin, banjo and bodhran (Irish drum). Plus, all students begin by learning the tin whistle – an Irish tradition. Class fees vary and include a costume and a tin whistle – as well as access to other Irish instruments. Dance shoes can be rented or purchased.

Students are taught the “natural way” – by listening and repeating after the instructor – just as students have learned for generations in Ireland, Gannon explains. This teaching method stems from the “oral traditions” of Ireland, where Irish music, song, poetry and stories were passed from one generation to another as parents and grandparents sat around the fire reciting them to their children and grandchildren. The method certainly seems to be working for St. Louis Irish Arts – it has produced champions of Comhaltas’ All-Ireland Music Festival, a world-championship competition for Irish music, Gannon notes. Eileen Gannon won the world title on harp in 2002; bodhran instructor Chris Weddle has earned multiple medals through the years; and in 2015, student Brianna Brown was awarded the world title on concertina – the first North American winner younger than age 12. The 12-to-15-year-old group ensemble and senior-and-junior ensemble won bronze in 2013, and the senior ensemble earned gold in 2004 – the first North American group to achieve the feat. St. Louis Irish Arts’ students perform throughout the year around St. Louis, as well as across the globe. Upcoming performances include the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 12 in downtown St. Louis, and the 2016 Comhaltas North American Convention from March 31 to April 3 at St. Louis Union Station Hotel. The convention includes music and dance workshops, banquets, shows and ceili (Irish dance evenings). Almost 80 students also will attend the All-Ireland Music Festival in August in Ennis, Ireland, where they will perform with another Irish branch from Skibbereen and attend a week of master classes before competing in the global contest. The group also has performed in Italy and China. “We were the only group from North America to be invited to perform in the Milan Expo last year,” Helen Gannon says, adding that the students have not only the opportunity to perform, but also experience different cultures. “Although there is a language barrier in each of these countries, it is amazing how music can bring people closer together.” St. Louis Irish Arts at Immaculate Conception School, 2934 Marshall Ave., Maplewood, 314-646-7338, slia.org
