EDITOR YOU’VE BEEN HIBERNATING LONG ENOUGH. I know, I know – the winter was long and cold and laced with slippery roads. But spring officially begins in one week, and there are too many bustling hot spots and hidden gems in the metro area to stay inside any longer – as evidenced by this edition of Ladue News. Start your spring off right with our 2020 Platinum List Awards, starting on page 25. To create this very special section, LN readers from all over the area submitted and voted on their favorite local businesses – from shops to restaurants to services and more – and our writers sought to uncover what makes each so extraordinary. Make it your guide to your most superb season yet in the metro area. Still not enough inspiration to get you out of the house? Venture over to page 80, where LN digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith shares a behind-the-scenes look at St. Louis’ newest marketplace, City Foundry STL, which is sure to be a prime destination very soon for all those who value shopping and eating local. Spring into action this week – and enjoy all our hometown has to offer. All the best,
Emily Adams

The word around town
Congratulations are in order for St. Louis-based nonprofit Veterans Business Resource Center, which received a $10,000 donation from American Direct Marketing Resources LLC last month. The donation will support VBRC’s programs that assist U.S. military members and their families in the metro area with entrepreneurship guidance. “As a veteran-owned business, American Direct has been a true champion of veterans’ entrepreneurship and the work the VBRC has been doing for the past 15 years,” VBRC president Darcella Craven says. “We’re grateful for their support, which enables us to help veterans and military families open and expand companies that will provide for their families and stimulate the economy.”

FALLING IN LOVE GALA Photos and story by Christine Tannous
S
t. Louis Community College Foundation’s Falling in Love … in Five Courses annual gala took place last month at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. This year’s gala featured a cocktail hour as well as a five-course dinner prepared by chef Jonathon Sawyer. It also featured a live auction and speeches throughout, including one by Jeff Pittman, St. Louis Community College’s chancellor. Now in its 12th year, the event seeks to raise money for students who lack the financial ability to attend college.
This is a fantastic event. It’s a lot of fun, especially if you are a foodie. There is great food and a great atmosphere. Not only is it a fun event, but it provides such a great gift to the students. CHRIS STUMPF, EVENT COMMITTEE MEMBER

COASTAL ESCAPE

W
ith just 48 hours of boots on the ground – or more likely, sandals on the sidewalk – local designers Diane Mantovani Fogerty and Brett Clark transformed a Newport Beach, California, vacation home for a family of St. Louisans. Mantovani Fogerty, owner and principal at Savvy Design Group, says her clients wanted a place to escape to during frigid Midwestern winters, so they enlisted a team to create a home away from home. “The home had not been updated in 25 years and needed everything,” Mantovani Fogerty says. Deep blue and neutral tones are prevalent in the estate, complementing the ocean view and elegant outdoor pool. “The inspirations for this design were coastal colors and comfortable gathering spaces,” Mantovani Fogerty explains. “Being mindful that the clients would be relaxing and inviting friends and family to enjoy this beautiful estate, our goal was to create a serene retreat with larger gathering spaces full of comfortable seating, natural light and, as always, easy function.” Mantovani Fogerty describes the kitchen as “the heart of this home.” A deep blue custom kitchen island with a marble top draws immediate attention. The space is bright, with clean, white cabinets and Carrera marble countertops, as well as sleek Sub-Zero and Wolf stainless steel appliances. And you can’t ignore the tiled backsplash. “The custom, brilliant, blue-and-white tile creates a focal point and brings life to the appliance walls,” Mantovani Fogerty says. “The oversized pendants illuminating the kitchen island are unexpected and supply wonderful task lighting.” After a year of designing, sourcing and managing construction from St. Louis, install day in Newport Beach finally came. “Install day is a magical day in our world,” Clark says. “It was particularly special with this project since we didn’t have the opportunity to do regular site visits.” Once on-site, Clark and Mantovani Fogerty had only about two days to finish the project. “After cleaning up the last signs of construction, overseeing the last window treatment installation and coordinating a delivery, we explored the local design community for accessories,” Mantovani Fogerty said. “We found some fantastic resources that had perfect one-of-a-kind pieces to bring more of the West Coast influence into this coastal estate.”

mily Hall Interiors is mixing modern finishes with alluring antiques to create ravishing and romantic spaces throughout the metro area. “I truly believe the magic is in the mix,” the firm’s namesake says. “It looks more comfortable and lived-in – more fun, exciting and interesting.” This marvelous marriage of styles actually came about from Hall’s own marriage. “We have very different styles,” Hall says of her and her husband. “He is very modern, contemporary. I am more Parisian-style.” Hall says the couple’s wedding two years ago coincided with the blossoming of her business. “He has a really good eye,” she says. “He’s a Realtor and started asking me if I could do some staging for him. I did a few things but felt like, ‘This isn’t what I want to be doing. I want to be doing my own thing.’ He told me, ‘Go for it. I want you to do this.’” Hall says with her husband’s encouragement, she started Emily Hall Interiors and hasn’t looked back. “I love to be creative,” she says. “I love to be able to create a functional and beautiful space for my clients – something that they can truly enjoy.” Hall’s first big client allowed her to masterfully design a moody entryway, dining room and living room in his home on Warson. The entryway, by way of illustration, has dramatically dark navy walls with charming curved archways and dark wood antique accents, with pops of white present. “It was fun because he has a love for antiques, just like I do,” Hall says. “He loves kind of that dark, dramatic look that I love to do.” The client in question has since moved and has again hired Hall for his new space, in Ladue. “It has been a work in progress because we are using a lot of antiques,” she says. “It takes awhile to source those things, but we are about to start the basement, and we are going to do a cigar room down there and just make it very cool. It’s fun that I’ve been with them for so long.” Thus far, Hall says most clients have come via word of mouth or her notable Instagram page, which features clean-lined designs and a beautiful balance between old and new. Such projects, Hall says, begin with a consultation. “I really try to get to know the client, look at the space and talk to them about how they want to use the space and find out how their family functions,” Hall says. “I would get to know what they like – colors, textures – just really get a feel for their style.” From there, Hall creates mood boards and gets rolling – conceptualizing the client’s desire is the dream of the job. “I love the challenge of having someone that has an idea of what they want,” Hall says. “That’s always fun, to be able to bring someone’s vision to life.” Hall says she often finds inspiration from her travels, but also loves flipping through old editions of Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful and more. “I have quite the collection of magazines,” Hall says with a laugh, adding, “I love to work with original pieces of art, too. Those always inspire me and really bring a room together. I feel like art can really make a space.” Art is stunningly showcased throughout Hall’s home, especially in her master suite, where she turned a nook into an inviting home office. The office walls feature a collection of gold frames and mirrors from her favorite area antique shops and playfully pull the eye to a glass-topped table featuring a gold base that fantastically accents the frames. “It’s nothing fancy, but I love it,” she says. After just two years, Hall has hustled and created countless stunning spaces. “My grandmother always had antique shops when I was growing up, and my mom loved decorating,” Hall says. “I’ve always been around [interior design], and I’ve always appreciated and loved it. I just love it.”

St. Louis native Jimmy Sansone’s nearly 5-year-old company was practically made to win this award. As self-proclaimed “regular guys who had a problem” – finding stylish casualwear that wasn’t fussy – Sansone, aided by his brothers, decided to create his own line. And although he’s quick to dodge the title of “designer,” the proudly Midwestern brand provides men with durable yet stylish pieces, from pullovers to polos to hoodies for day, night, city, country and every situation in between. There’s no pretension that comes with sporting The Normal Brand logo; rather, it signals that you favor enjoying quality, embracing comfort – and supporting a locally based brand that’s going places. Formalwear for men is pretty straightforward, right? A nice suit, a classic tux – easy. Very wrong. Although the ladies might receive more attention for gowns at galas, the men behind Gentry’s Limited are making sure metro area gentlemen have just as much fun and put just as much thought into their apparel for formal occasions. Favoring style over trends, while minding every detail of each garment that’s custom-created, Gentry’s Limited encourages its clients to eschew any ingrained fashion rules men might have in regard to pattern play, color pops and the expression of personal style through apparel – especially for big events. Because if not then, when?
This global footwear brand is keeping the men of the metro area walking tall. Cole Haan is loved not only for its high-quality, yet comfortable dress shoes – the last thing you want during a long day at work or even a special event is for your dogs to be barking – but also, now that the designer has a line of stylish sneakers, for allowing men to grab a pair of shoes for any occasion and know they won’t be sacrificing style for quality or comfort. Whether you’re in the market for a new pair of Oxfords, loafers or slip-on sneakers sleek enough to pass for a night out, trust that this specialty shop has what you’re looking for.

For the second year in a row, the men of the metro area are making a statement in selecting Dakota G. Grady’s haberdashery as their favorite place to curate their work wardrobe. Known for its bold colors, rich fabrics, impeccable tailoring and standout style, Gentry’s Limited welcomes men who want to communicate confidence from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – and beyond. But just because you’re looking for workwear doesn’t mean the way you obtain garments needs to feel tedious. The shop in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood arranges custom service by appointment only, so your visit is relaxed, tailored to your needs – it can even include coffee or a cocktail! – and definitely doesn’t feel like work.
We all have that one friend who’s always the first to debut trends. This cozy tandem bistro’s primo cellar certainly justifies the wine in its name, but at Sasha’s Wine Bar, the cocktail menu is just as dazzling as the pinot. The house-made drink selection rotates regularly, with offerings ranging from the Tikiinspired to the classic mainstay. Whatever guests decide to order can be easily paired with something from the kitchen, including fresh charcuterie, cheese plates and a full menu of pizzas, salads, sandwiches, crêpes and desserts. There’s also the scenic patio. On cool spring, summer and fall nights, there’s hardly a better place to be than at Sasha’s Wine Bar, sitting among friends and family with a drink in hand.
Although the metro area’s history is deeply rooted in beer production – practically anyone who knows anything about St. Louis is familiar with AnheuserBusch – a crop of smaller-scale breweries has taken the area by storm. In that light, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company shines especially bright. The company, guided by German-born brewmaster Florian Kuplent, specializes in brewing modern American styles alongside more traditional European flavors, with local favorites including the Zwickel and the Schnickelfritz. The result is a satisfying combination of old and new, of recognizable and unfamiliar. So toast this local gem by swinging by its Grove Brewery & Bierhall, its Midtown Brewery & Biergarten or its U.R.B. (Urban Research Brewery) for pints of freshbrewed beers and bites from a given location’s kitchen.

Multiple locations across the area prove the roaster to be a must-visit no matter where you live or where you’re visiting. True coffeeheads savor every sip of singleorigin cups, while casual drinkers treat themselves to classic and seasonal espresso drinks, cold brews and handbrewed teas. Post up at one of the local cafés to work, study, read or simply chat – no matter how you enjoy your cup, Kaldi’s makes the ideal landing spot.
Based in Webster Groves, Olive + Oak deserves every accolade it receives. The 2019 James Beard Award semifinalist is just the place for a relaxed night out or a special occasion, be it a gettogether, first date or retirement dinner. Daily menu changes mean diners are treated to only the freshest seasonal ingredients, including steaks, seafood, quail and vegetables so good they may prompt guests to buttonhole the waitstaff about how to prepare them at home. Olive + Oak’s décor erases any preconceptions a guest may have had about the “fine dining” label, because the handsome seating, bustling bar and industrial light fixtures should make anyone feel right at home.

Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria By Drew Gieseke | Photo by Gregg Goldman
Italian dining has reached another level in St. Louis. Sure, there are the classics, the ones that everyone knows and loves. But it’s hard to find a better restaurant that represents the contemporary quite like Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria, a tandem café that customarily leaves visitors satisfied. Helmed by wife-andhusband team Katie and Ted Collier, the eponymous two-location hot spot dishes out ’za with fresh fixings and perfectly puffed crusts. Guests can keep things standard with a margherita pie – or take their taste buds for a ride with something a little different, like the Black Garlic & Artichoke or the Fig & Squash. And for those sporting a gluten allergy, there’s no need to fret – any pizza can be made gluten-free for a small surcharge. Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria, multiple locations, katiespizzaandpasta.com

By Drew Gieseke | Photo supplied Fresh, seasonal flavors stand out at Truffles, a fine dining experience in Ladue. What’s really special, though, is the private party room, a relaxed space that can host up to 18 guests for a wide variety of experiences. Menus are made easy in the private dining room, as planners can select courses in advance, choosing from hors d’oeuvres, starters, main dishes and desserts. Easy selection options include three or four courses, so guests can start the night right with gumbo, yellowfin tuna wraps, truffle risotto and three different salads. Entrées cover land and sea, with plenty of variations depending on the occasion. Hosting a watch party? Go for the baby back ribs. Prefer a little more upscale atmosphere? Stick with Atlantic salmon or filet mignon, then end the evening with sweet tooth-satisfying finishing touches. And for the premier experience, guests can opt for the six-course tasting menu. FOOD | ROMANTIC DINING
Vin de Set By Drew Gieseke | Photo supplied
It’s only fitting that the nod for the most romantic restaurant in the area goes to a French bistro, because at Vin de Set, the language of love is the lingua franca. Nestled in St. Louis’ Lafayette Square neighborhood, Vin de Set has the makings of a great date night. First, there’s the rooftop bar. Sunny days and cool nights set the stage for love to bloom. Couples then can head back downstairs to split a bottle of wine and enjoy the dinner menu, which boasts an approachable tour of Southern French cuisine – and particular affection for dishes with a Mediterranean influence. Standouts include Ratatouille Ravioli, savory crêpes, roasted rack of lamb and, of course, delectable pommes frites sprinkled with parmesan and served with tarragon aioli. Couples can finish the date by splitting cheesecake or a Nutella crêpe – making it all but impossible to go wrong at this romantic gem. Nathaniel Reid Bakery By Drew Gieseke | Photo supplied
The term artisan gets tossed around quite frequently in the culinary world. Chef Nathaniel Reid might be a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, but what makes Nathaniel Reid Bakery’s treats so special is that although his macarons, croissants, cookies and other pastries certainly fit the standard artisanal description, they lack the pretension so often associated with such a lofty adjective. Put simply, everyone can enjoy the sweet treats at Reid’s namesake neighborhood bakery. It crafts pastries for any occasion, so it’s not unusual for customers to swing by the shop in search of birthday sweets, breakfast items, treats for the office or pretty much any other situation.

Emporium St. Louis
The Great Cover-Up
By Drew Gieseke | Photo supplied
By Drew Gieseke | Photo supplied
Regularly recognized as one of the top antique sellers in the metro area, Emporium St. Louis makes the perfect spot to search for knickknacks, furniture, fixtures, jewelry and other unique preowned items. Visitors can browse the retailer’s cozy confines to track down their next great find. It’s hard to put into words exactly what one might find, as Emporium is always rotating and replacing its offerings, but the tastemakers who run the shop have an eye for the interesting (and the useful). Even better, shoppers can search through select items on Emporium’s website. But any true picker will tell you that when it comes to antiquing, the thrill of the hunt fulfills just as much as the find itself. In that regard, Emporium never disappoints.
Upholstery, window treatments, pillows, bedding and more are quite literally covered at this excellent, full-service interior design store. But The Great Cover-Up also specializes in home accessories that pull together any and every room in your house. Based in Ladue, The Great Cover-Up should rank as customers’ go-to partner for identifying furnishings like pillows, lamps, decorative plates and other accents. Customers can make their way to the showroom to work with the design team to do just that – and if the store doesn’t have exactly what customers are seeking, the team will help them track it down. This kind of professionalism – combined with years of expertise – makes The Great Cover-Up stand above the rest in the home accessories business.

Its expert team uses several different styles of design, including contemporary, modern, transitional and mission. Not only that, but Dau collaborates with some of the best manufacturers in the industry, such as Habersham, Woodbridge Furniture and Karastan. Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath
for a 7 Day Free Trial!
By Drew Gieseke | Photo by Lisa Mitchell
Offer expires 3/31/20
Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath’s roots in the metro area date back more than 60 years. A second generation of owners merged two businesses into the company that still thrives today, thanks in part to the business being purchased in 2006 by wife-and-husband duo Jenny and Todd Rausch, who combined their kitchen and bath design and installing experience to serve clients in the region. The resulting firm prioritizes anything but the ordinary – and guides customers every step of the way “from inspiration to installation.” Karr Bick primarily focuses on areas where its team can build in cabinetry, which is why kitchens are so essential to its business. Consumers expect a custom experience from their remodeling company, and the Karr Bick team – which represents a broad array of talented and successful designers – is dedicated to delivering just that.

The Frisella Nursery has operated here since 1953, while its landscape division, Frisella Landscape Group, has established itself as one of the premier such teams in the area. Consultation and design are the first steps. The group works to understand exactly how a homeowner wants to use a space, from hosting friends and family to seeking a serene escape from our fast-paced world. Designs are approved and installation takes place – but Frisella’s service doesn’t necessarily end there. By Mary Mack | Photo supplied
In the matter of elevated accessories, the metro area’s favored place to visit is the family-owned Genovese Jewelers in Creve Coeur – one of the largest jewelers in the nation. Area residents praise Genovese for its high-quality diamonds, designer offerings – a variety that includes every style, from the delicate to the dramatic and the formal to the fun – and, most important, outstanding service. Setting the company apart from the rest, though, is its use of computer-aided design, which allows the Genovese team to create custom pieces through computer renderings, 3D printing and raw castings. Clients have the ability to dream up any piece of jewelry, whether they want to invest in a trendy piece or the creation of a family heirloom. Not to mention, all services are done in-house, taking the phrase “shop local” to the next level. Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

Since receiving this accolade, Shine Boutique has closed its doors. We celebrate the service and style it has provided in the metro area. Fashion should be fun, and jewelry can add personality to any outfit. That’s something Shine Boutique understood and promoted. Owner Tamara Netsch stocked the shop on Clayton Road with eyecatching accents that were both trendy and locally sourced, from brands such as Inali Jewelry Designs, Zingara Gems Jewelry and Hoopla. Metro area shoppers knew when they stepped into the store that they’d encounter a curated collection of funky, bright, bold and unique pieces at accessible price points. The Cakery Bakery By Mary Mack | Photo supplied
This month, The Cakery Bakery celebrates 15 years of business, and to mark the occasion, it upgraded the exteriors of its storefront in St. Louis’ Dogtown neighborhood with a new sign and awning. Another milestone to mark? Being selected as a preferred wedding bakery of Ladue News readers for the fifth time in five years. And it’s not hard to understand why: Owner Ericka Frank and her talented team dream up custom works of art for each couple, tailoring each tier to their clients’ specific tastes. Whether you want your floral accents to be fresh or carefully crafted using gum paste, fondant or even swirling, fluffy rosettes, they can make it happen. Want your own children’s sketches to adorn your cake tiers? Done. Or maybe you want to keep things simple – say, a naked cake with gold leaf accents? The Cakery Bakery team has you covered. What’s more, each cake is as delicious as it is beautiful, highlighted by the bakery’s signature made-from-scratch, melt-in-your-mouth buttercream frosting.
We see what lies ahead, and we’ll lead you through it.

Whether you’re looking to rent a tux or purchase a custom suit for the big day, local favorite Stallone’s Formal Wear prides itself on providing style and service, and on not being “a mall store … and that’s a good thing,” the website states. With more than 100 years of experience and locations in Chesterfield, Ladue, Maryland Heights, O’Fallon, Missouri, and south St. Louis County, wherever your crew lives in the metro area, they’re not too far from a Stallone’s, which clients praise for its staff’s patience and attention to detail. Is part of your party coming in from out of town? Not a problem – all they have to do is fill out a measurement card, and the staff at Stallone’s takes care of the rest. What’s more, their staff can even create custom neckties to match bridesmaids’ gowns so everything coordinates perfectly.
For the third year in a row, BEST Transportation, owned by sisters Kim J. Garner and Debbie Rudawsky, takes top honors for wedding transportation. For them, it’s about the journey and the destination. Whether your big day requires party buses, guest and airport shuttles, limousines or the perfect getaway car, BEST is known for its reliability and convenience in getting you and your crew where you need to go. Someone says, “Yes!” and then everyone celebrates. But shortly after the bubbly has been poured, the onslaught of questions and decisions arrives. Where? When? How? Eating what? Holding what type of flowers? It can be more than a little overwhelming. That’s where, Ladue News readers agree, Natalies Brides comes in. Since 2015, owner and lead planner/ coordinator Natalie Collora and her team have been the metro area’s wedding whisperers, making sure your special day runs smoothly and remains stress-free. Whether you need help from day one of planning or you’re just looking for support the day-of so you can stay present in the moment, Collora and company will be there for you as you say, “I do!”
Metro area couples, it seems, have a sweet tooth for The Caramel Room, and we can’t blame them. The modern, industrial-chic space is located inside the historic Bissinger’s Handcrafted Chocolatier chocolate factory and features picture-perfect natural light, hardwood floors, exposed brick and beams, and an outdoor terrace with scenic views of both the river and the skyline, plus – maybe most importantly – a menu filled with chocolate-infused culinary options to delight you and all of your guests. Clients rave about the venue’s amazing event managers with their attention to detail, as well as the excellent service of the staff. Plus, if you’ve always wanted an outdoor ceremony but feel skittish about weather ruining the day, you can breathe easy. In the event of any unpredictable Midwestern weather, your ceremony can be moved inside as the perfect backup plan.

livia Jondle is always picking up pieces. She picks up pieces of vintage fabric anywhere she can – antique stores, estate sales, her Great Aunt Nancy’s closet. She picked up her work ethic and her company’s name from her father, Rusty. She even picked herself up, after multiple car accidents, and pivoted her career in the name of passion. “I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life,” Jondle says. “And I kind of freaked out after I got back and quit my job, and I bought a sewing machine and just sort of started working through this horde of vintage fabric that I’d been collecting since high school.” Fast-forward to today, and Jondle now owns The Rusty Bolt, the locally based custom vintage apparel design company that specializes in sustainability and body positivity and that is frequently featured at eclectic clothier May’s Place in The Grove business district in St. Louis.

With a bachelor of fine arts from The San Francisco Art Institute and a childhood of playing dress-up behind her, Jondle has always entrenched herself in the artistic world and says she thinks of herself not as a designer, but instead as a creative who merely picked up a skill. “Honestly, for most of my designs, I allow the materials that I find tell me what to do with them,” she says. Jondle works exclusively with vintage and found fabric, a business model that feeds her soul in more ways than one. “For me, vintage clothing is incredibly special because each item has a history of its own,” she says. “Not only that, but the sustainability of not creating new fashions and to utilize what we already have, things that have a history and a weight and a nostalgic notion to them, is really valuable to me.” As important as vintage clothing is to Jondle, she says she hasn’t always found a place for people like herself in that space. “Representation is a really big, important thing that is kind of starting to get attention,” she says. “Growing up, I was really heavy, and I never saw people that looked like me being celebrated, and I always felt this immense pressure, just like every other human, who kind of feels left out or like they’re not one of the chosen ones because of the way that they look. And so I think that creating styles that are not only flattering but also comfortable really helps people to feel empowered in their daily lives, which is really magical.” Jondle is spreading that magic all over the metro area with custom work that can even incorporate her customers’ heirloom fabrics, but she started with May’s Place. “May’s Place is amazing, and I have nothing but magical, wonderful things to say about the entire team,” she says of the partnership. “I reached out to them when I first started with this as my goal, saying this is where I want to be. I didn’t expect

them to be like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ Because I was sort of shooting for the stars, I guess, within the context of St. Louis. “It’s really nice to have a place where I can send people to try my items on, which I think is a big part of being a conscientious consumer. You can take the time to consider if it fits you right, if it will work in your closet with the rest of your clothes. Being able to send my potential clients to a place that’s so warm and inviting and supportive is so great. They’re just cheerleaders for everyone, and I love that. Jondle’s biggest new development – aside from moving into a bigger studio space in St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood and hopefully expanding her team in the near future – is a fashion line she’s working on that will be revealed at a sustainable fashion show by May’s Place on April 16 at Wild Carrot in St. Louis’ Shaw neighborhood. That show will include Jondle’s alltime favorite piece: an orange velvet jacket. Although the trends that most interest Jondle are constantly evolving – currently, she’s enamored of 1940s silhouettes like wide-legged pants, workwear and jumpsuits – the moral pillars she’s built her business on remain the same. “‘Slow fashion’ means to be intentional and to be aware of our impact and take the time to make one-off pieces as opposed to mass-producing the same thing for large numbers of people,” Jondle notes. “It kind of goes against the capitalistic model that we have right now and beckons back to when things were custom-made or when things were made in the home, which I think is really important.” From the forgotten fabrics Jondle unearths to the ethically made, quality pieces she turns them into, customers of The Rusty Bolt themselves certainly have found something special. Vegan Kimchi Jjigae Story and recipe by Amanda Elliott | Photo by Kim Wade
I
t’s hard to pinpoint when my love affair with kimchi began, but over time, it has shifted, evolved and ultimately solidified itself as an unconditional affection that warms my soul. Now that we’ve established the deep admiration I have for this fermented vegetable – typically napa cabbage or Korean radish – let’s talk about one of my favorite ways to consume it. Jjigae is a Korean dish similar to Western stew, traditionally served boiling hot in a communal dish. This vegan version is just as hearty as the meat and seafood varieties, and the type of kimchi you use will determine its spice level. Mother-in-Law’s Kimchi is a delicious introductory choice; it’s available at grocery stores and markets throughout the state, as well as online at milkimchi.com.
ln
VEGAN KIMCHI JJIGAE Serves | 4 to 6 |
4 Tbsp canola oil, divided 1 carrot, peeled and cut on the bias 1 onion, julienned 2 tsp salt, plus more for seasoning freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and thinly sliced 1 Tbsp gochujang 2 cups kimchi 2 cups water ⅓ cup mirin (Japanese condiment) 2 tsp brown sugar 1 16-oz package firm tofu, drained and large dice 2 Tbsp cornstarch 1 cup thinly sliced scallions cooked short-grain white rice, for serving
| Preparation | In a medium saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of canola oil. Add carrot and onion, and season with salt and pepper to taste; cook for 5 to 8 minutes until caramelized. Add mushrooms and gochujang; cook for an additional minute. Add kimchi, water, mirin and brown sugar, and simmer until flavors come together for 10 to 15 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste, and set aside. In a small bowl, combine tofu, cornstarch and 2 teaspoons of salt. Add remaining oil to a medium sauté pan. Add tofu and sauté until brown and crisp on all sides for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add tofu to stew. Spoon stew into bowls, and garnish with scallions. Serve with rice. NOTE: More often than not, kimchi is flavored with some salty elements of the sea, such as shrimp paste and fish sauce. To keep this recipe 100 percent vegan, make sure you pick up a jar of vegan kimchi or make your own at home.

ary Mogerman attributes lack of respect to the end of many marriages. “There are so many reasons people get divorced,” says the family law attorney. “It may be unilateral or both parties, but when respect is missing, the marriage suffers. That is when people begin talking to divorce lawyers.” Mogerman is a shareholder of Carmody MacDonald P.C. in Clayton. He was recently installed as first vice president of the Chicago-headquartered American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and will become the organization’s president in 2022. One of only 100 Diplomates of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, he is Missouri’s only Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. Mogerman and his wife, Dee Dundore Mogerman, also hold the unique distinction of being the only couple to have both served as president of Congregation Temple Israel in Creve Coeur. He relays how he met his wife at the end of his sophomore year of high school: “She was the new girl in our school; she played the trumpet, as I did. So I swooped in. We dated off and on for nine years before we married. We got engaged in 1985, while I was in law school, and we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary in May.” The Mogermans currently live in Creve Coeur and are the parents of three adult sons – Jacob, Samuel and Ben – and the grandparents of Sol, who is 6 months old. The family enjoys music and subscribes to Jazz St. Louis. The couple both graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Following his graduation from Washington University School of Law in 1985, Mogerman spent five years in a commercial litigation and medical defense practice before joining the late Allan Zerman in a practice focusing on marital and family law. He became a shareholder in the law firm of Carmody MacDonald, where he relocated his practice in 2018. Mogerman and his law partner, Joseph J. Kodner, Esq., are the authors of A Guide to Divorce in Missouri, a 260-page guide from Addicus Books. Each summer for the past seven years, Mogerman has taught a class for young family law attorneys. Mogerman is a past recipient of the Roger P. Krumm Family Law Practitioner of the Year Award from the Missouri Bar Family Law Section. He has also been recognized as a “Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyer” since 2005 and previously chaired the Family Law Section of The Bar
Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. He laments that 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. “We all know people who have gotten divorced,” he continues. “It is a very human problem that deals with your relationship with your spouse. But you still need to have a method for conscious uncoupling if your marriage does not work out. That is when unhappy couples end up talking to divorce lawyers.” Mogerman offers this advice on the process of divorce: “It is extremely important to have a system in place to make sure the bills get paid on both sides and that parties can continue to live and pay their bills. It is difficult enough when you are living in the same household. When you break out into two households with the same income stream, it becomes even harder. “People contemplating a divorce need information to make decisions. They need to know what their legal rights are, the practicalities of going through the process of divorce and how it will both change their lives and impact their children. They should learn how much it is going to cost and whether the problem can be fixed short of being divorced.” Mogerman concludes: “The world does not suffer from a shortage of opinions when it comes to divorce.”
There are so many reasons people get divorced. It may be unilateral or both parties, but when respect is missing, the marriage suffers. That is when people begin talking to divorce lawyers.

rom an outsider’s perspective, City Foundry STL might be mistaken for just another metro area mall. Visitors will be able to shop, grab a bite to eat and watch a movie all in the same place, but unlike most malls, the majority of vendors in this new $220 million development are independently owned small businesses and will make their debut together in midtown St. Louis. “Lots of things are very different,” says Steve Smith, principal owner of City Foundry STL. “The way it will look – being in an existing historic building – and then just the types of tenants and the uses of the site are so much more diverse and broad than you see at any typical mall.” Smith is the CEO of the Lawrence Group, the real estate developer guiding the City Foundry STL project informed by a history of work in the Grand Center Arts District, as well as downtown St. Louis. In a matter of months, the public market will open on a 15-acre site at 3700 Forest Park Ave. The building – once home to Century Electric company, one of the area’s top manufacturers of motors and generators – is visible to passersby from Highway 40/64. Now, shops, bars, restaurants, a food hall, entertainment venues, and office and event spaces will coalesce inside the repurposed, nearly 100-year-old foundry structure. “If you’ve traveled around the country or even around the world, food halls and mixed-use developments like this are all individualized to their locality,” Smith says. “St. Louis, historically, was a great manufacturing city, so we have all these old manufacturing facilities [throughout the area]. Most of them get torn down and thrown away, but we’re repurposing, and so that’ll be very unique.” Much of the project’s inspiration came from similar developments like Chelsea Market in New York City and Krog Street Market in Atlanta. When traveling with his family, Smith observed an “electric energy” at Krog Street Market, where at all times of the day, people can be found working, eating, drinking or biking through the site. “Where can we try and create something like this in St. Louis?” Smith says he remembers thinking aloud. And before long, after the acquisition of the foundry site, construction began on St. Louis’ own market in August 2018. City Foundry STL will open midway through this year, but officials can’t assign a specific date to the occasion just yet, Smith says. The site will feature 122,000 square feet of food hall and restaurants, 107,000 square feet of creative office space and 105,000 square feet of retail shops. As of Feb. 18, approximately two-thirds of the property had been leased. The food hall will bring together at least 20 different local chefs and their unique food concepts or mini restaurants. Foodies can get a pizza or burger fix, or enjoy foods less common in the metro area, like Spanish tapas. “We believe that St. Louis has a tremendous food scene,” Smith says. “The idea of the food hall at City Foundry is to put a number of those talented, innovative chefs kind of on display all in one location.” Each food hall eatery is one-of-a-kind, Smith says. Some chefs, like Sue Wong-Shackelford of Kalbi Taco Shack, already own a restaurant in the metro area, but they’ve created an exclusive joint within City Foundry STL. “Kalbi Taco Shack has only been in business for less than four years, and we’re running out of space because many times, especially on the weekends, the line is out the door,” Wong-Shackelford says. Her new foundry venture, called City Taco Shack, will feature Asian-Mexican fusion cuisine similar to what’s served in Kalbi Taco Shack in St. Louis’ Benton Park neighborhood. “We have been approached by several places and other developments in different parts of town, but since a lot of Kalbi’s customer base comes from the midtown area, City Foundry’s development is the perfect fit for us,” Wong-Shackelford says. “With it being a true local chef-driven food-and-entertainment destination, we are proud and humbled to be a part of it.” Anchor tenants include grocery store Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which marks its first metro area location. The cinema boasts 10 screens and almost 1,000 reclining seats, plus a full-service bar and restaurant for the ultimate movie-viewing experience. An on-site hiking-and-biking trail connecting Forest Park to downtown St. Louis is in the works via Great Rivers Greenway, the sponsoring regional agency. For those who prefer to drive, Smith says there will be abundant free parking – “over 1,000 parking spaces on our site.” Smith says he expects this development will provide “a place that’s unique, fun and innovative in every way,” adding that the up-and-coming area it’s located in is “transforming the look of St. Louis.” “This area is where our innovation community is centering,” Smith says. “And what City Foundry is intending to be is the public face of innovation.” City Foundry STL, 3700 Forest Park Ave., St. Louis, cityfoundrystl.com

and connection and that idea of movement. You’ll see a lot of design elements that reflect those ideas.” Midcentury-modern influences permeate the interior, featuring furniture designs inspired by Gateway Arch designer Eero Saarinen, such as tulip pedestals and womb chairs. Industrial touches include a laser-cut wrought-iron map of downtown St. Louis. Switch List, whose name comes from the physical document that train engineers use to route trains to their final destinations, involves a correspondingly classic theme. The 60-seat restaurant features an all-day dining menu, including shareables, salads, entrées and more.

tory: All is well in the ancient kingdom of Arcadia, S where King Basilius rules with a firm hand over his subjects – until, that is, the oracle Pythio sends an ominous message to him, saying that Arcadia might lose its famous “beat” if the oracle’s warning isn’t heeded. Pythio informs Basilius that four flags will fall before Arcadia loses its beat: His younger daughter will bring a liar to bed; his older daughter will consent to wed but not to a groom; the king and queen will commit adultery with each other; and a “better” king will replace Basilius. Is all hope for happiness in the kingdom irretrievably lost? Highlights: The music of ’80s all-girl rock group The Go-Go’s is joyfully incorporated into this offbeat jukebox musical, given an endearing interpretation in its current incarnation at New Line Theatre. Other Info: Head Over Heels premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2015. It had a preBroadway run in San Francisco in 2018 before opening on Broadway later that year. In addition to songs by The Go-Go’s and Tom Kitt’s music arrangement, the musical features a book by Jeff Whitty, who also conceived the show, adapted by James Magruder. Head Over Heels is based on the 16thcentury work The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia, which was written by Sir Philip Sidney. The show’s two acts move briskly in 2½ hours, including intermission, thanks to the steady and well-disciplined direction of Scott Miller and Mike Dowdy-Windsor. The show opens with the infectious number “We Got the Beat,” closes Act I with the pulsating “Our
Lips Are Sealed” and also works in other tunes that are likely less familiar to non-Go-Go’s aficionados, but that are pleasing to the ears nonetheless. There’s fine work by the cast, led by Jaclyn Amber as Mopsa, who demonstrates her beautiful voice on “Vacation” and other songs. Carrie Priesmeyer shows her savvy way around a song as Queen Gynecia with a jazzy riff on “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” joined by Zachary Allen Farmer as the brooding King Basilius. Tielere Cheatem is convincing as the nonbinary Pythio, leading the ensemble on the number “Vision of Nowness,” and Grace Langford finds the humor in the role of Princess Pamela. Clayton Humburg is an earnest Musidorus, Melissa Felps is fine in the role of Philoclea, and Aaron Allen hams it up as the officious Dametas. The energetic ensemble joining in this no-holdsbarred frolic includes Kevin Corpuz, Evan Fornachon, Chris Kernan, Chris Moore, Maggie Nold, Michelle Sauer, Alyssa Wolf and Sara Rae Womack. The time for Head Over Heels is described as “Nowhen” in the New Line program – and with the music of The Go-Go’s at its core, it’s definitely a good time, indeed.

his month, Ready Readers recommends two books for children who are wild about animals! The month’s first recommendation involves a modern retelling of the beloved Aesop tale The Tortoise and the Hare, featuring a lively story by writer Alison Ritchie and bright, bold illustrations by Nahta Nόj. A simple narrative and engaging characters keep the centuries-old action fresh. As in the traditional tale, Tortoise challenges Hare to a race. Hare finds the idea preposterous but agrees to oblige his slower opponent. Hare’s inflated ego and post-snack malaise lead him to take a nap midcontest, allowing the trudging Tortoise to emerge the winner. Several pages feature cutouts, flaps and other fascinating features that should keep children requesting, “Read it again! Read it again!” Opportunities abound to discuss interesting words and adages sprinkled throughout the story. Youngsters should enjoy spending time with their reading buddies discussing the language and
By Sheila Oliveri hide-and-seek. When the younger sister has trouble spotting her much-revered big brother, she seeks assistance from groups of nearby animals. She first asks a turtle, “Have you seen my brother? He’s very tall.” When the turtle explains, “You’re tall,” she replies, “Not as tall as my brother.” The youthful giraffe ventures on, meeting other clusters of critters that she asks for help, describing her older sibling in various ways: spotted, fast and brave. Each time, the animals point out that those words describe her as well, and she timidly replies, “But not like my brother!” She finally realizes her own strengths – and thereby gains pride and confidence. Just Like My Brother engages children in a seek-andfind game within each of Marino’s picture spreads. The young giraffe might not see her brother hiding, but children enjoying the story will delight in pointing out his ineffective places of concealment. These two books will be shared this month with the 10,000 children in the Ready Readers Storytime program.

No two shows of the musical comedy FLANAGAN’S WAKE are exactly the same, thanks to the cast’s improvisation and the audiences’ participation. This week’s show promises a festive twist in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. A surprise is in store for lucky theatergoers who find a shamrock on their seat, and drink specials are part of the deal, too. The set includes a working bar onstage where members of the audience can purchase drinks before and even during the show. Also, get a $5 ticket discount for the St. Patrick’s Day show by using the code PINT at metrotix.com. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza. Tickets cost $29.50. playhouseatwestport.com.

The Foundry Art Centre is opening a free exhibition well-aligned with Women’s History Month. “VOTING DAUGHTERS” commemorates the ratification of the 19th Amendment 100 years ago by inviting artists of all gender identities to participate and visually showcase how women’s voices impact contemporary society. Midwestborn artist Judith Mayer juried the exhibition and presents awards during the 6 p.m. opening reception. Preceding the reception is a Gallery Talk at 5:30 p.m., with an award ceremony set for 7 p.m. foundryartcentre.org.

free new exhibition focused on artist Terry Adkins presents a grand amalgam of ephemerality (in the form of music) and solidity (in the form of sculpture) at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis’ Grand Center Arts District. “Terry Adkins: Resounding,” the exhibition in question, spans the career of the Washington, D.C.-born artist and opens Friday, March 13, under the oversight of Stephanie Weissberg, the Pulitzer’s associate curator. It runs solely at the museum till Aug. 2. Adkins – who died of heart failure in Brooklyn, New York, in 2014, a mere three months short of his 61st birthday – served as a professor of fine arts in the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. “Terry Adkins knew no limits,” states Cara Starke, the Pulitzer’s director, in a press release from the museum. “Rather, he erased traditional boundaries between disciplines, bringing the impermanence of music to sculpture and the solidity of sculpture to music. With ‘Terry Adkins: Resounding,’ we hope to shed new light on the career of this influential artist, whose expansive, all-encompassing body of work is at once formally rigorous and deeply personal.” The exhibition, the release continues, seeks to “survey the trajectory of this influential artist’s expansive, improvisational practice, from rarely shown early sculptures and works on paper to his acclaimed ‘recitals’ – installations of related artworks with which Adkins … explored the legacy of unsung but significant historic figures and moments,” as “activated” by the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, a collective of multidisciplinary artists that Adkins founded.
“Throughout his career, Terry Adkins combined an improvisational approach to art-making with a deep interest in history and music,” Weissberg states in the release. “The result is a rich body of work that encompasses numerous disciplines, including sound, sculpture, video, performance and printmaking. Through his devotion to the legacies of underrecognized figures, along with his roles as a mentor and teacher, Adkins made a lasting impact on contemporary sculpture and performance.” Supplementing the exhibition is a fully illustrated catalog with essays by Weissberg; Lowery Stokes Sims, a distinguished independent curator and art historian; and Clifford Owens, a member of the Lone Wolf Recital Corps. The release, in an absorbing passage, states the exhibition “includes a robust selection of items that Adkins collected – books, records, musical instruments and other objects from a diversity of artistic traditions that highlight the breadth of Adkins’ literary, musical and visual influences and provide additional insight into his work.” “Terry Adkins: Resounding” also hosts Owens and other performers from the Lone Wolf Recital Corps. The release describes a number of intriguing-sounding works, some of them quite monumental, designed to explore Adkins’ major formal and conceptual concerns, among them: • Nenuphar, which melds “two sousaphones whose circular tubes have been joined side by side,” testifying “to Adkins’ interest in symmetry, while signaling both his engagement with performance and his interest in repurposing instruments and other objects.” • Last Trumpet, which comprises 18-foot-long horns, for which “Adkins attached sousaphone and trombone bells to tubes of cast brass,” intending them “to evoke the horns sounded by the first four angels

of the Last Judgment as described in Revelations 8.” The release continues by quoting Adkins in what may have been a puckish mood: “I made them on the scale at which I thought angels would play them.” Although initially of dubious playability, the release adds that they “proved to be instruments with great range, and were included in several of his recitals.” • Muffled Drums, a floor-to-ceiling stack of bass drums, which may reference “the July 1917 Silent Protest Parade, organized by the NAACP to protest racial discrimination and violence in the U.S.,” according to the release. “The New York Times described the march, in which more than 8,000 people participated, as silent except for the sound of ‘muffled drums.’” Elsewhere in the Pulitzer, Mute, an example of Adkins’ video work in one of the Pulitzer’s lower galleries, forms a testament to American blues titan Bessie Smith and incorporates part of the 1929 film St. Louis Blues, which features the only remaining footage of her. “Adkins removed the sound from the original film, drawing attention to the emotional intensity of Smith’s body language as seen through the video’s triptych of close-up shots of her as she sings the title song,” the release notes. Otherwise, “Terry Adkins: Resounding” features a series of music-based works on paper that Adkins produced daily for more than a decade; roughly 20 wall-mounted musical instruments acquired during the artist’s lifetime, including trumpets, drums, rattles and a variety of lute native to the West African coast; and “memory jugs (memorial objects from the American South) and bells, which were an integral component of the artist’s performing practice,” notes the release. In a similar mode, two works titled Mvet Glorious and Mvet Majestic II

“evince Adkins’s interest in pairing and mirroring, as well as his burgeoning thoughts about merging music, performance and sculpture. Each of the sculptures consists of two nearly 7-foot-high ovular pieces of wood that are nearly contiguous, yet not parallel to each other. … The mvet is a string instrument used by the Fang people of Gabon, Cameroon, São Tomé, and Equatorial Guinea.” The release quotes Adkins as explaining: “Mvet is onomatopoetic. It refers to the sound made by some West African instruments.” Last but scarcely least, the exhibition closes with, among other pieces, works devoted to legendary blues musicians. Of all the components of “Terry Adkins: Resounding,” however, perhaps none sounds more arresting than the artist’s longest-running work and his first use of found materials, Infinity, whose creation dated from 1972 to, astonishingly, 2014. At the age of 19, the release relates, Adkins “stole a copy of an album by jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, who, like Bessie Smith, exerted a powerful and ongoing influence on the artist. To atone for this, Adkins decided to purchase a copy of the record whenever he encountered it, ultimately buying dozens of them, which he placed in a trunk that he had found in Tennessee. During his lifetime, the trunk was displayed nearly full, with the records arranged in two rows and the lid propped open.” When translated into an art installation, that act of atonement – so outré, yet so quotidian – may well resound quite powerfully with many Pulitzer visitors.
