One cluethat you’redealingwithseasonal allergiesistiming,says Dr.JessicaSmith, a Mercy Kidspediatrician.When your childstarts exhibiting classicallergy symptoms–sneezing, congestionanditchyeyes–like clockwork eachspring,it’ssafetoassumeallergiesare theproblem.
“If youhave a fever, thatdenotesmore ofaninfection,”Smithsays.“If your child suddenly getssick,andthey’re reallynot feeling well,thatmightbea cluethatit’smore ofaninfectionthananallergy.” Coldsorother typesofupper respiratoryandsinusinfections alsomayincludeasorethroat, coughing andheadache.
Whetherit’sinfectiousorallergic, symptoms canbeannoyingatbest.Over-the-counter treatmentoptionscanhelp,andSmith
recommendsstartingwithalong-actingoral antihistamine,suchasa24-hour formulation of cetirizine hydrochloride(Zyrtec).Children cantakethemedicationinaliquidor chewable tablet form,andthe keytosuccessfultreatment is consistency.
“I recommendtakingit every24hours.It’s notnecessarytotakeitatthesametime every day, but takeitbefore you go tobed,”Smithsays. “And you wanttodoit foronetotwo weeksat leastbefore youdecideifit’s workingornot.”
Histamineisa chemical releasedbythe immune systemthatattacksallergensand causes commonallergy symptoms. Takingan antihistaminewill reducelevelsofhistamine andoftenease symptomsquickly.“Youtakean antihistamine,andthenextday yourhistamine levelisdown,and youmight feelalittlebetter,” Smithsays.“Thenextday youtakeanother antihistamine,andyourhistaminelevelis down evenmore, and you feelalotbetter.The bigmistakeIseealotofparentsmakingis thattheystoptheantihistaminebecausetheir childstartsto feelbetter.Andwhathappens? [Histaminelevels] go rightbackup.After a coupleof cycleslikethat,parentstellmethey

Ifantihistaminesalonearen’t clearingup allergy symptoms,Smith recommendsaddingan inhaled corticosteroid,suchasFlonase. “A lotof kids,oncethey go onFlonase,canactually come offtheoralantihistamine,butitdoestakea weekorsobefore younoticeadifference,”Smith says.“I recommendtakingbothmedications together foratleasta weekortwo.”
Smith’sadvicealsoappliestoadults.Saline nasalsprays orrinsescanalsobehelpful,but many childrendonotlikethesetreatments inwhichsterilesalinesolutionispouredor sprayedintothesinuscavitythroughone nostril, exitingthroughtheoppositenostril.
Childrenandadultswhohave allergies for onespecificseasoncanusethemedications asneededuntilallergenssubside,but for thosewho experienceallergiesthroughout the year,Smithsays itissafeto continuelongtermdailytreatment.Shealso recommends startingmedicationsa few weeksbefore a knownallergyseasonarrivestohelpprevent symptoms frombecomingtroublesomeinthe firstplace.
Headachesorsinuspressurethatdoesn’t subsidea few weeksoftreatmentmay indicateaninfectionthatneedsprescription intervention.“Don’tbeafraidto comesee your primarycarephysicianabout symptomsthat aren’t clearingup,” Smithsays.“We’rehappyto checkthingsout.”

By PatRaven,Ph.D.and Julie HessEveryspring comeswithsurprises.My cardoonsurvivedthatbrutalpolar vortexbackinJanuary.Whenitpopped uplittlesilversprigsin February,I was elated.Itisrightontheborderofhardinessin St. Louis,andwhileI coveredit wellduringthe below-zero days,Istillhaddoubtsit would come back.If youarenot familiarwithcardoon,itis alarge perennial,upto four feettallandwide, withgrandslicedleavesinfleecysilver.Itis thewildmotherofartichokes,and considered quiteadelicacyinItaly. Unlikeartichokeswhere theimmatureflowerbudiseaten,cardoonleaf petioles(thinkof celerystalksorrhubarb)are blanchedandseasonedasa vegetable.In my garden,Igrow it foritstremendousarchitectural impactasit formsanimposinglacysilver clump,ananchor foranyperennialborder.
Occasionally foundinlocalnurseries,itiseasy toorderonline.
Severalof my rosemariesaredead fromthe winter.While youmaythinkthatthisistobe expected,Idohave onesurvivor.It’san “Arp,” longpromotedbytheSt. LouisHerbSocietyas beingmorewinterhardythananyother.It was coveredwithabucketandmulchduringthose bitterly colddays,butso were all my otherones. OneofthebestpartsoflivinginSt. Louisis theculturalimpactdiverse communities have made –and continuetomake–onthe metroarea.Inthelate19thcentury,TheHill sawaninfluxofNorthernItalians,African AmericansandGermanswhoshapedthe neighborhood’srichhistory.Soulard,named afterAntoineSoulard, aFrenchRevolutionrefugeewhoarrived inSt.Louisin1794,furtheraddstothisculturalmosaic.Going evenfurtherback,thelandsthat would eventuallybecome St. Louis were first inhabitedby variousindigenousgroups, includingtheKickapootribeandtheOsagepeople.Withouta doubt,St.Louis’present-day neighborhoodsbeartheinfluences ofthese variedperspectivesanduniquehistories.AndDogtown–theneighborhoodbordering Forest ParktothesouthandTheHill tothesouthwest –isnodifferent.

Every yearonSt. Patrick’sDay, paradestake place DowntownandinDogtown,whereDogtown UnitedandtheAncient OrderofHibernians,anIrishCatholic fraternalorganization,invite St. Louisansto celebratethearea’senergeticspirit.
Dogtownbeganas asmallmining communityinthemid1800s. AccordingtoanarticlebyBobCorbett, webmaster for theDogtownHistoricalSociety’shomepage, theoriginsof Dogtown’snamearehardertoidentify.“Severaltheoriesofhow theareain St. Louisknownas‘Dogtown’ receiveditsnamehave floatedaround forgenerations,”Corbettwrites.Onetheoryis simple:ThereweremanydogslivinginDogtown,thustheapt title.“Anothertheory concludedthatsquatters were evicted from
whatbecame Forest Parkand forcedintoDogtownin1876 tomake room forpark construction,”Corbettposits.“Thesesquatters were amongthepoorIrishofthe1800sand were thoughttohave been ‘workinglikeadog’orslanderedas‘thosepoordogs.’”However, these folksmayhave notbeensquattersatall –onthe contrary, theyweremostlikelyIrish coaland clay miners.
Inhis research,Corbetttalkedto TomHallerandMikeGittins, twodistant cousinswithhistoricaland familial connectionsto theDogtownneighborhoodanditsearly residents. According tothesamearticleontheDHS website,HallerandGittins speculatedthattheIrishminers weren’tpartofanylarge-scale miningoperation –atleastnotatfirst.“Individualminerssimply starteddiggingsmallholesinthegroundwithnothingmorethan shovelsandtheirshoulders,andtheyliterallydraggedthe coal outofthegroundtothesurface,”GittinstoldCorbettandHaller.
“Thisactivityleftlittleholes everywhere, whichlooked alotlike thetypesofholesthat adog woulddig.”Sureenough,Corbett reports,whenthe cousinstyped“doghole”intotheDictionary ofMining,Mineralsand Related Terms,thedefinitiontheyfound explainedthetermas asmallopening fromoneplaceinacoal minetoanother.“Themakeshiftshacksandtentsnearthemine theminerscalledhome were naturallycalledDogtowns,”DHS presidentJohnCorbettadds. Perhapstheproofisn’tinthepups afterall.
Inanycase,asyou’recelebratingSt. Patrick’sDaythis weekendwithparades, cornedbeefandcabbage, shamrocksand (potentially)JamesonIrishWhiskey,glancearoundatthestreets ofDogtownandimaginehundredsoflittleholesbeneaththem. Whether we’llhavefurther evidenceofthesedogholes’ existence remainstobeseen,butonething’s forsure:St. Louis was,and remains,onehard-working,luckycity.
