ON THE COVER SAINT LOUIS BALLET

IN THE ST. LOUIS ARTS COMMUNITY

S

By Maggie Peters | Cinderella photo by Kelly Pratt

t. Louis is a city known for its robust arts community. From the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra to The Fabulous Fox Theatre to the Saint Louis Art Museum, there is no shortage of shows, exhibits and events for residents and visitors alike. And since 2000, the Saint Louis Ballet has become a shining jewel in the St. Louis arts crown. “It’s the only professional classical ballet company in the region, and it’s grown from a fairly modest beginning to an organization with over 20 dancers,” says Tom Voss, board president and co-chair of the ballet’s upcoming Starry Night Gala. “Dancers come from all over the world and move to St. Louis. We’re supporting people who are living and working here.” The growth of the ballet from a small organization to the professional company is largely owed to its artistic and executive director, Gen Horiuchi, who came to St. Louis in 2000 after a career as a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet and on Broadway. “I saw the opportunity here and thought it was time to take a leadership role,” Horiuchi says. “Directing and choreographing was something I always wanted to do. I grew up seeing Peter Martins, a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet, later lead the ballet, so that was a career goal for me. That’s why I took that challenge.” Beyond growing the number of performances from one to five a year, Voss adds that under Horiuchi’s direction, the number of dancers that travel to be a part of the Saint Louis Ballet has grown. “It makes it a very complete company, up there with any of the classical ballet companies in the country,” he says. On May 14, Saint Louis Ballet will be holding its Starry Night Gala as a fundraiser to help support the nonprofit company. Alongside raising the funds that help Saint Louis Ballet continue its high-quality performances and support community outreach programs, the gala will also honor philanthropist Mary Gen Horiuchi and Mary Strauss Strauss for all she does to support the ballet and other arts institutions in the St. Louis area. Horiuchi is both humbled and grateful for the support Strauss gives to the ballet, as well as the support and enthusiasm from the St. Louis community. For information about the Starry Night Gala, visit stlouisballet.org/springgala2022. And see the company on stage April 29 to May 1 for four performances of the classic storybook ballet Cinderella. AGAINST THE ODDS

108 AND FEELING GREAT

By Amanda Dahl

Y

ou don’t get to the age of 108 without living through some things. In fact, only a fraction of a percent (0.004 percent, to be exact) of people have ever exceeded 100 years of age, according to Insider. Genevieve Turner of Parc Provence in Creve Coeur is counted among this rare population, at only two years shy of becoming a supercentenarian. “I survived the [Spanish flu] pandemic of 1918, as a 4-year-old,” Turner recalls. “My two brothers and I moved in with another family. We were separated from [our parents because] my father owned and ran a drugstore, [and] he was exposed to the general public.” From weathering world-altering events to building a large, close-knit family, this centenarian has always had an independent streak. Up until she turned 104, Turner lived on her own. That strength of spirit shined in the extraordinary getaways she curated. “I helped coordinate trips with my girlfriends because our husbands weren’t keen to travel,” she says with a laugh. “On one trip, we went to Ireland for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Oh, I loved Ireland! It was fun, fun, fun.” With her on the Emerald Isle were her son, Steve Turner, and daughter, Mary Mennemeyer, who recall seeing a parade in Dublin for the holiday and witnessing a rainbow over one of its bays. Their mother has traveled throughout Europe, including to Austria, England, Germany and Switzerland. She also took them on camping adventures cross-country.

12    March 18, 2022

| LadueNews.com

“We drove after dark, before air conditioning, [because] it was cooler in the evenings,” Mennemeyer says. “We’d roll out sleeping bags in state parks when everybody got tired. One morning, we woke up, and where were we?” “In a cemetery!” her mother exclaims. She counts herself fortunate for having almost 50 years with the man she loved. “Bob Turner was a good sport,” she says of her late husband, who was a minister. “We had a very good marriage. I enjoy life for him.” As to what Turner believes has contributed to her longevity, she states: “It’s luck, mostly luck – [and] keeping a good and positive attitude.” She also credits her steadfast connections to family, neighbors from Webster Groves and friends. A

former English teacher for the Special School District of St. Louis County, she remains active through book club, bridge club and garden club. On Turner’s 108th birthday, she received 100plus cards from her Kappa Delta Sorority sisters, whose families also keep in touch. Celebrations continued with a party at Parc Provence, where Turner enjoyed her favorite treat (butter pecan and strawberry ice cream) and which culminated in reuniting with family from all over the country at her youngest granddaughter’s wedding. “My children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren have brought me great joy,” Turner says. “Now, my children’s and grandchildren’s trips give me a personal joy in life [through] sharing stories and pictures of their adventures.”

ON THE FRONTLINES

Leaders in Education By Connie Mitchell

A

mong the most embattled professionals during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, educators have found themselves rapidly rethinking their teaching paradigms for multiple academic years now – and more recently facing competing pressures from different factions with strong opinions about when to re-enter classrooms and what precautions to use in schools. However, Jim Wipke, superintendent of schools for the Ladue School District, says one thing remains central: ensuring students’ needs are met. “As we conclude year two of the pandemic, we recognize the need for social and emotional support for our students,” he says. “We also acknowledge the need for our students to get time to be kids and socialize. We realize that our students have individualized needs and were impacted by the pandemic differently, both socially and academically. We recognize that our job is to be flexible to students’ needs and make adjustments within our organization to support them with all available resources.” Wipke also is quick to credit teachers and families with adjusting quickly under extremely stressful and uncertain circumstances, and calls

14    March 18, 2022

| LadueNews.com

them “the true heroes.” “Imagine doing your job each day and knowing what you do works for children, but then all of a sudden having that world turned upside down but still having the same expectations of yourself in terms of doing what is best for your students,” he says. District leaders and employees began the 202021 school year online, which Wipke describes as “devastating.” Because he sees each school as a community built on relationships, families suffered, as they lacked the traditional school community experience, which impacts students’ social development and academic success. Yet Wipke notes that the last two years also resulted in several valuable lessons. “It has placed our students’ social and emotional needs back at the forefront,” he says. “I am constantly focusing on making sure the appropriate supports are in place, including hiring additional support counselors and conducting an external review of our counseling programs to be sure we are staying knowledgeable on needed services.” Other beneficial pandemic-fueled changes include reviewing how educators deliver the curriculum, examining flexibility and exploring various types of instruction; re-examining

educational practices and opportunities to ensure inclusivity and access; and reorganizing district priorities based on pandemic experiences and what educators have learned through the process. “It has been a slow progression back to a more normal environment, and we still have a ways to go,” Wipke notes. Teachers and students are back in classrooms, performances and field trips are beginning again, and the district policy now recommends, but does not mandate, masks. Above all, Wipke is proud of the Ladue School District community and its response to the challenges of the last two years. “We will lift our students when they need support and provide them with the challenges they need to overcome any obstacles that might come their way, including grit, perseverance and resilience that it takes to make it through being educated during a pandemic,” he says. “These intangibles can far outweigh an academic score and carry over into so much of the life skills needed for success.” Ladue School District, 9703 Conway Road, St. Louis, 314-994-7080, ladueschools.net

MOVERS & SHAKERS

A

Galia Movitz By Alice Handelman

t first glance, it might be hard to imagine Galia Movitz – the beautiful and poised fashionista – in an army uniform learning to shoot a rifle. Despite her youthful two-year stint in uniform in a special security unit of the Israel Defense Forces, her style remains as vibrant as ever. Years after that stint, as a middle school math teacher, her students voted her the “teacher who never wears the same outfit twice.” Movitz says: “I get a thrill out of putting outfits together where everything matches including the shoes, handbag and, of course, sunglasses.” After two years of mandatory service, she traveled to St. Louis to visit one of her five siblings. In 1978, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and immediately put her math degree to work in the classroom. “I was born to be a teacher,” she says. Movitz lights up when talking about the 15 years she spent in front of classes in the University City and Pattonville school districts. Movitz met her husband-to-be, Milton, a St. Louis businessman, at a meeting of Hillel at Washington University in St. Louis. “Meeting my prince, this most amazing man, changed my plan to return to Israel,” she says. The couple married in 1983 and “lived each day to the fullest” until Milton passed away in 2019. Together, they have four children and three grandchildren. “We loved and respected each other and devoted time and energy to our family, community and to our marriage,” she says. Movitz has made her mark as a Jewish community volunteer. A longtime member of Congregation B’nai Amoona, she has served on its board and on several of its committees. She calls Senior Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose “my rabbi, dear friend and teacher.” Movitz also has tutored hundreds of students over the years for their b’nai mitzvah – a coming-of-age ritual in the Jewish religion. Movitz has also served on the boards of the Central Agency for Jewish Education, Hillel and J Associates. She was elected to the executive boards of Jewish Federation, Women’s Philanthropy of Jewish Federation, Solomon Schechter Day School and Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School. In 1997, she became the first Israeli president of Women’s Philanthropy. Movitz has co-chaired the St. Louis Jewish Light’s Unsung Heroes event and calls it “an honor and blessing to know the heroes in our community who devote their time helping others.” She has been honored with the Jewish Federation’s Grossberg Young Leadership award, the Kippnis-Wilson Lion of Judah award, the Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School’s Visionary award and Chabad’s Lazaroff Lamplighter award. The Jewish Student Union renamed its Israel Scholars program the Galia and Milton Movitz Senator John Danforth Israel Scholars program to honor the couple’s support. Ten years ago, Movitz and her husband were co-presidents of Solomon Schechter when the school merged with Saul Mirowitz Day School-Reform Jewish Academy to become Creve Coeur’s Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School. The merged school is the metro area’s only pluralistic Jewish day school and the first in the nation to be created out of a merger of denominational schools. “This school is a treasure and has kept me involved for over 25 years, Movitz says. “I love and believe in the school as a tool to ensure that future Jewish leaders are knowledgeable about their heritage.” Movitz’s inspiration comes from her grandmother, who devoted her life to helping others: “She welcomed new immigrants to Israel and helped them get housing and basic needs. The president of Israel twice named my grandmother ‘Mother of the Year’ for her charitable work. I feel blessed to continue her legacy with acts of loving kindness.” An innate storyteller and award-winning photographer and writer, Alice Handelman provides Ladue News readers with a glimpse into lives that enrich St. Louis.

L

ocal devotees of the St. Louis Blues should rush to “HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever,” which opens at the Saint Louis Science Center on April 1 and runs till Sept. 5. Seattle’s Pacific Science Center launched the exhibition, with the Saint Louis Science Center ranking as only the second to host it in travels projected to extend from coast to coast for years to come. With subjects theoretically ranging from assists (aka “apples”) to the venerable Zamboni and zebras, “HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever” enjoys a potentially large topical rink. A pre-opening announcement from the Saint Louis Science Center describes it as “a highly interactive touring exhibition focusing on the science, history and culture of ice hockey.” The announcement also notes that, among other entities, the NHL

and the National Hockey League Players’ Association supported the development of “HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever,” making it a must-see for fans. Attendees’ immersive journey will start in a facsimile locker room adorned with jerseys and contemporary NHL players gear, the Saint Louis Science Center’s announcement relates, after which the attendees will traverse a mock “tunnel” to the Hockey Science Lab. On a scaled-down replica ice rink there, attendees of all ages will have a chance to challenge their hockey knowledge and skills crucial to playing the sport with manifold interactive activities designed to provide fun – and also to demonstrate scientific concepts. Such activities will include testing reaction time (gauging the number of lights an attendee can hit in only a minute), slap shot speed (gauging an

attendee’s highest speed in a trio of shots) and shot accuracy (gauging how many targets an attendee can hit in 30 seconds). Attendees also will be able to clamber aboard a genuine Zamboni (the curious, hulking device that resembles a mechanized street sweeper and resurfaces a rink’s ice) to enjoy the view or to shoot a selfie. Similarly, with the aid of an interactive touchscreen, attendees will be able to reinspect the Stanley Cup – or, in the case of the two or three metro area residents who missed it when the Blues defeated the Boston Bruins on June 12, 2019, and brought that laurel back here for an areawide tour, to glimpse its glories for the first time. Finally, the Saint Louis Science Center’s announcement notes that the exhibition will include vintage skates and gear from the late 19th and early

20th centuries, as well as displays demonstrating the evolution of hockey equipment and protective gear – like that used to keep bloody chiclets from skittering across the ice. All things considered, “HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever” at the Saint Louis Science Center should light the lamp for all aficionados of the game, young and old. That includes newbies who may have gravitated to the sport only during the 2019 Stanley Cup championship or longtime habitués of Enterprise Center in St. Louis’ Downtown West neighborhood, in support of Craig Berube’s battlers from Ivan Barbashev to Jake Walman. GATHERINGS & GOODWILL GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN MISSOURI

DESSERT FIRST Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

O

n a snowy evening in late February, guests braved the weather for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s signature event, Dessert First. Eight local chefs used a particular Girl Scout cookie as inspiration and as an ingredient in creating delicious desserts, which guests sampled before sitting down in the Khorassan Ballroom at The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta Hotel in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. The People’s Choice award went to chef April Mathews from Peachy Keen Culinary Consulting for creating an impressive gluten-free Toffee-Tastic cookie bar. The announcement of a new fundraising campaign, the Her Future Is Our Future Campaign, was an important part of the evening, which included awarding scholarships and recognizing corporate leadership. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!

Dessert First is about bringing people in from across the community to support our girls. Their futures, their leadership development and all of us supporting them – that really means a lot to them and their families, but it means a lot to the community as a whole.

aura McCarthy Real Estate has been a recognized leader in real estate since 1944. The agency has gained this reputation through a stellar team of agents that happily helps clients not only find a place to call home, but also makes them feel right at home throughout the home-buying process. “There’s immediately a feeling of comfort when you walk through our doors,” says Jill Azar, who has been a real estate agent with Laura McCarthy Real Estate for 12 years. “You don’t feel as though you’re intimidated by anyone or that it’s a competitive environment. You feel as though you’re welcomed, and we all support each other.” Which is exactly what Penny Schneithorst, who has been with Laura McCarthy Real Estate for more than two years, loves about her brokerage. “Everyone is collaborative and supportive and talented and passionate about the business,” says Schneithorst. “We all support one another and everyone wants to see you succeed, and I think it’s such an awesome environment to be in.” And obviously not only for agents and employees, but also clients, as well. “We say this to clients all the time: We are big enough of an agency to provide excellent service and outstanding marketing and research, we have an internal closing team, but we’re small enough to offer top-class service,” says Mary Slay, who has been a Realtor with Laura McCarthy for three years. “And I really believe that our team always makes an effort to go above and beyond our clients’ expectations.” Something the Laura McCarthy team achieves through coaching clients. Sellers are coached to be prepared for any situation including how much interest they may or may not have in their home, among other things. “Even though homes are mostly flying off the market in multiple-contract situations, we are not presenting our homes to the marketplace in any different way than we would when there’s much more inventory than buyers,” says Allie Rossini, who has been a Realtor for Laura McCarthy Real Estate for 12-plus years. Jill Azar Allie Rossini and Lauren Gillentine “We think that it’s important for everybody to make sure that their product shows as best as possible.” Best being something Laura McCarthy Real Estate, which has been serving St. Louis for 80-plus years, can relate to for a reason. “We have such an experienced and seasoned group of people that we work with, including brokers that give us that edge,” Slay concludes. “They know what’s happened in the past in the market, what’s happening today and with all the information that they provide us it helps us better serve our clients.” Laura McCarthy Real Estate, 29 The Blvd., St. Louis, 314-725-5100, lauramccarthy.com Penny Schneithorst

Burr Oak Camp By Drew Gieseke

For more than 70 years, Burr Oak Camp has welcomed kids, from preschool to sixth grade, for summer day camp fun that goes above and beyond the traditional experience. Located on the campus of Ladue’s John Burroughs School, Burr Oak features everything from swimming instruction and team sports to arts and crafts to games that keep attendees engaged and energized. Even better, the camp always maintains a low camper-to-counselor ratio to ensure all kids get the attention they need. Additionally, organizers take all necessary precautions to protect against the spread of COVID-19, in accordance with protocols recommended by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In other words, parents can rest easy knowing their kids are playing safely while school is out. 755 S. Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School By Drew Gieseke

Located in Creve Coeur, Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School stands out as one of the finest such institutions in the metro area thanks to its strong curriculum, its approach to education and its empowerment of young learners. The independent school instructs kids from kindergarten through eighth grade in both secular and Jewish study. Saul Mirowitz teachers strive to bring out the best in students by identifying what works best for each child. In practice, this means customizing learning experiences to challenge young learners and help them reach their potential. Another central focus of the school is building and fostering community. As a result, Saul Mirowitz incorporates parents and grandparents in both the classroom and the boardroom. This family element enhances every component of the educational experience, from how the school operates to how the instructors teach to how the students learn and grow. 348 S. Crossroads College Preparatory School

Forest Park

By Drew Gieseke

By Drew Gieseke Photo by Christina Kling-Garrett

Crossroads College Preparatory School swells with considerable pride for its staff, students and programs – and it’s easy to see why. The secondary school is the most racially and economically diverse independent institution in the metro area. With a 6-to-1 student-teacher ratio, kids get the hands-on instruction they need to be as successful as possible. And thanks to a robust Advanced Placement Program – the school offers more than 10 AP classes – attendees, on graduating, are exceptionally wellprepared to enter college. Ladue News readers agree that Crossroads offers an educational experience that far exceeds the secondary school standard – all for the benefit of the students who attend.

Both a local and a tourist attraction, sprawling Forest Park more than deserves the reputation it’s cultivated through the decades. Opened in 1876 to commemorate the nation’s centennial, the 1,300acre park took the international stage at the turn of the last century as the host of the 1904 World’s Fair. And since 1986, the private nonprofit conservancy Forest Park Forever has teamed with St. Louis and that city’s parks department to maintain and sustain the gem for the benefit of all. Today, Forest Park is dotted with hiking trails, picnic spots, five major cultural institutions – including the Saint Louis Zoo and Saint Louis Science Center – and so much more. All told, this crown jewel of public spaces remains a favorite among 13 million annual visitors. 5595 Grand Drive, St. Louis, 314-367-7275, forestparkforever.org

Saint Louis Art Museum

Huffords Jewelry

By Drew Gieseke

By Mary Mack

It’s only fitting to recognize the Saint Louis Art Museum, which anchors the burgeoning local arts scene and stands as one of the premier cultural experiences in the entire Midwest, as the winner of this category. Marble statues carved by Italian Renaissance sculptors. Classic Americana paintings from the country’s finest. French Impressionist works that burst with color, and modern pieces that dazzle and inspire. All that and more can be found within the halls of this landmark, which boasts a collection that encompasses more than 5,000 years of human history and culture. But there’s more to the museum than just the permanent art on display. In addition, guests can enjoy special exhibitions that showcase everything from Native American art to contemporary works and beyond.

Huffords Jewelry earns Ladue News readers’ top ranking because when you are investing in fine jewelry, Huffords knows that trust and customer service are just as important as quality. From engagement rings to estate pieces to custom creations, all Huffords pieces are of the highest caliber – and your shopping experience will be, too. A third-generation business and a metro area staple since 1948, Huffords – Dan Hufford and his staffers – provides the expertise, curation and dedication you want when making a memorable purchase. They treat clients like friends, which is further proven in their commitment to community causes. For pieces you’ll want to show off, look no further.

Laurie’s Shoes

AUDRA

By Mary Mack

By Mary Mack

For 70-plus years, Laurie’s Shoes has been a favorite supplier of footwear to adults and kids alike in the metro area. In this locally owned shop, you’ll find more than 60,000 options representing your favorite brands, from Birkenstock to New Balance to Ugg to Sperry. But what is a great shoe if it doesn’t fit? When you walk into Laurie’s Shoes, its expert staffers will make sure you and your family are set up with the perfect pair by taking exact measurements of the length, width and arches of your feet. Even better, for the busiest among us, is the fact that you can set up an appointment to come in, get measured and shop when it’s most convenient for you.

After time spent at a who’s who of luxury fashion houses, including Lanvin, John Galliano and Ralph Lauren, Audra Noyes launched her namesake brand, AUDRA, during Paris Fashion Week in 2014. Since then, she’s been named a millennial designer to watch and gained global kudos, with none other than Vogue calling her designs “effortless and elegant.” Styled up or down, her pieces are a welcome addition to anyone’s closet. Locally, we’re fortunate to be able to shop in-person at the AUDRA Atelier by walk-in or by appointment. Another reason her collections are lust-worthy? All garments are made in New York at women-owned factories and are produced in limited quantities, which means when you sport AUDRA, you’re promoting sustainable fashion – a cause we can all get behind. 9753 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-275-0758, audraofficial.com

Few things are better than a local patio hangout, and Tamm Avenue Bar in St. Louis’ Dogtown neighborhood is the epitome of the vibe you want on those pleasant metro area days. You can’t go wrong with a spot that’s dog-friendly, that offers live music and that has a game room and a fully stocked bar offering local brews – as well as plenty of table space for groups both large and small. Come for the vibes – but stay for the food. At Tamm Avenue Bar, Nomad STL serves sandwiches and unique takes on bar food. Since 1985, this cozy Irish bar has been serving a warm welcome in St. Louis’ Dogtown neighborhood, as well as straightforward – and delicious – bar food to all who visit. A stop in at Seamus McDaniel’s feels like you’ve stepped into a small pub in Ireland, but this local favorite also somehow accomplishes feeling distinctly “St. Louis.” The menu is perfectly designed to be paired with the brew of your choice – whether you go Guinness or Bud Light. With filling burgers and other sandwiches, shareable appetizers and even a menu designated for “wee ones,” everyone will find something that hits the spot, regardless of whether you dine in, set up on its patio or opt for pickup or delivery. 1208 Tamm Ave., St. Louis, 314-645-6337, seamusmcdaniels.com RUNNERS-UP: CUNETTO HOUSE OF PASTA SPIRO’S RESTAURANT

Kaldi’s Coffee

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company

By Mary Mack Photo by Christina Kling-Garrett

By Mary Mack

The goal of Kaldi’s Coffee? To provide an exceptional specialty coffee experience to java drinkers in the metro area and beyond. And from its placement on this year’s Platinum List, it seems it’s been doing that quite well. Since opening its first café in Clayton’s DeMun neighborhood in 1994, the company has pursued sustainable business practices and excellence in taste. Now, with 10 locations throughout the metro area and in Columbia (plus three in Atlanta), as well as a robust online store offering coffee subscriptions and nationwide shipping, Kaldi’s helps you to savor, whenever you want, a cup of the good stuff – from single-origin varieties like the Ethiopia Limu Gera to blends like the Highlander Grogg.

In just 11 short years, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company has grown from a small craft brewery to a local institution. It found success from brewing high-quality lagers using old-world techniques and state-of-the-art facilities, now welcoming beer-lovers into three locations: The Grove Bierhall in St. Louis, The Midtown Biergarten in St. Louis and Hallertauer Brauerei in southern Germany, near the UCBC brewmaster’s hometown. Area residents love this brewer’s staples, such as Zwickel and Urban Underdog, as much as its limited releases of #6 (in honor of Cardinals great Stan “The Man” Musial) and STL Zoo Bier. Also not to be ignored: its seltzers and nonalcoholic hop waters! Multiple locations, urbanchestnut.com

Nathaniel Reid Bakery

LoRusso’s Cucina By Mary Mack Photo by Christina Kling-Garrett

By Mary Mack Photo by Erik Kellar

Whether you are in the mood for artisanal pastries, other baked goods, confections or sandwiches, this James Beard-nominated destination is a delicious decision no matter the day or season. Known by many as the best place to find a croissant in the metro area (among many other delectable offerings), Nathaniel Reid Bakery has been a Kirkwood must-visit since its pedigreed owner and namesake opened shop in 2016. From social mediaworthy pastries like The Ruby and The Margo, to the rainbow of French macarons in flavors such as Sicilian Pistachio and Espresso, you will have a hard time narrowing your selections. Our advice? Don’t narrow anything. Treat yourself !

It’s not hard to find a great Italian meal in the metro area. We are blessed with a bevy of options and a whole neighborhood dedicated to the delicious fare. So when our readers tell us that their favorite upscale restaurant is an Italian eatery, you know it’s earned the hype. LoRusso’s Cucina was conceived by Rich and Terri LoRusso in the 1980s, and their menu has been satisfying customers ever since. Paying homage to the traditions of The Hill and Sicilian family recipes, along with dishes inspired by trips throughout Italy, their options are hearty, and their atmosphere is welcoming. When you dine at this perennial community partner, you’ll enjoy a true family experience that you’ll definitely want to come back for.

The designers and artisans at Karr Bick want to “create a space you never want to leave.” Todd and Jenny Rausch combined their passions for building and design into a company that makes “spaces for people to engage more fully with others and the activities they love.” Clients can choose “the full Karr Bick experience” that includes design, selection and installation. Experts measure your space, consult closely with you, design and revise, help you choose materials and colors, and install or work with a contractor of your choice. The resulting kitchens and baths are extraordinary spaces that fit your lifestyle and create a mood you love.

Customers stroll the flagstone paths, past the waterfall, enjoying the perennials, shrubs and trees showcased throughout the nursery. In addition to choosing plants from the extensive garden center, Chesterfield Valley Nursery offers a complete array of custom landscape design and installation services, including patios, water features, drainage solutions, and outdoor kitchens and structures. The Gatesworth

McKnight Place Extended Care

By Connie Mitchell Photo by Gregg Goldman

By Connie Mitchell Photo by Westrich

If you or a loved one is looking for a truly exceptional senior living environment, The Gatesworth is a must-see. When a local team of visionaries developed The Gatesworth more than 30 years ago, the philosophy was “the answer is ‘yes.’ What was the question?” That principle of making possibilities into realities continues today. Active aging is embraced in this meticulously planned and landscaped enclave that provides independent seniors with top-notch amenities. The highly trained staff provide a host of thoughtful, personalized services that make life both easy and beautiful. Residences can be fully customized by in-house interior designers and construction professionals or by a team of your own. The Gatesworth community members can enjoy casual or fine dining in one of three on-site restaurants, relax while professional drivers take the wheel, enrich their minds with lectures, performances, social activities and exercise classes, and easily access St. Louis’ many cultural, shopping and business opportunities. The result is a lifestyle as exceptional as you are.

For seniors who need skilled nursing and supportive services beyond an assisted living setting, McKnight Place Extended Care ensures that individuals with multiple challenges or complex diagnoses are treated with compassionate, professional care. Short-term rehabilitation focuses on recovery after illness or surgery, while the skilled nursing community serves seniors who need ongoing care and supportive services, such as speech, physical or occupational therapy. Communication and collaboration with residents’ loved ones and health care providers is crucial in determining each individual’s personalized level of care, provided by licensed nursing professionals and an on-call medical director who is a boardcertified geriatrician. The home-like facility is not only safe but innovative – instead of a traditional nursing home, it is designed to feel like a household with elegant suites, restaurant-quality meals and beautifully decorated common spaces where social events and activities occur. 2 McKnight Place, Ladue, 314-789-8461, mcknightplace.com/skilled-nursing

GROOMING & GLAMOUR

Beauty & THE BEER By Amanda Dahl

T

he Busch family has been brewing something other than beer as of late. Billy Busch and his wife, Christi, recently announced their partnership with former celebrity stylist Gabriel Reboh to create a line of unisex fragrances. The line, dubbed Béatus Paris, was released in St. Louis at Neiman Marcus on Feb. 14. “My family is very creative,” Billy Busch says. “My kids are creative. They were talking about creating their own fragrance for many years. … We were lucky enough to meet with Gabriel and his wife, Nathalie, over a real estate deal. They were way further ahead in the perfume business than we could’ve imagined.” Reboh, the artistic director of Béatus Paris, had a clear vision for this line of fragrances (inspired by his time in France, home to the world’s perfume capital), which attracted the Busch family to the partnership. “They had the quality beyond belief,” Billy Busch says. “They had already come up with a recipe, a place to manufacture, the finest manufacturing plant in the world. It reminded me very much of the beer business –

the attitude and legacy I grew up with, only making [something of] the highest quality.” That common ambition to create only the best is what led Reboh to France in search of a manufacturer for the brand. “France is … an environment of beauty … of well-being,” Reboh says. “Therefore, that was the choice to go to the best to get the best, right? We chose Symrise – they’re literally No. 1 in the world – and they don’t take everybody, and we succeeded. We got the best.” In that same vein, they collaborated with French chemist and neurobiologist Dr. Jean-François Rumigny to create the formulas for six signature scents. “Every molecule, every extra smell, every flower that you add reacts differently,” Reboh elaborates. “You need to know what to mix in order to reach [a] target, to keep the perfume clean and high-end. We have over 22 to 25 percent of concentration, [the highest on market]. The scents last longer. It’s more pure. That’s why everybody loves it.” The original line categorizes scents by two themes: gardens and forests. Three fragrances reflect the world’s most famous gardens, including Giverny of France and Alhambra of Spain, and are named for their respective locations. The additional three are named for aspects of a forest, as reflected in the name Haute Futaie, which represents the highest branches of a forest, and Sylve Noir, which roughly translates to “black forest.” “Once we saw the bottle and smelled the fragrances, we knew we were onto something,” Billy Busch affirms. “The consumer understands a quality product from a not-so-quality product. I learned that from my forefathers. We believe that Béatus will be the next success in the fragrance industry.” Béatus Paris can be found in several retail stores, including Neiman Marcus, as well as online at beatusparis.com.

THE DOGWOOD

FOUR SEASONS OF CHARM By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

B

uilding seasonal color remains essential to creating interest in your garden yearround, with one popular genus of trees and shrubs to fill that bill being Cornus, also known as the dogwood group. The group’s color calendar locally starts in March with the earliest spring glow of the brilliant golden yellow cornelian cherry, Cornus mas. As a sure sign of spring, it blooms alongside snowdrops and daffodils. The native dogwood – Cornus florida, the state tree of Missouri – follows next with many varieties in shades of white, cream, rose and red. After that, the Asian kousa dogwoods carry the genus into late spring with their starry-pointed bract blossoms that hold for several weeks. Stellar Pink and Constellation, from the Rutgers breeding program, constitute hybrids between the native dogwood and the Asian kousa. This collection of trees has large, showy bracts; all the rest have tiny, true flowers in decorative clusters. Pagoda dogwood, a large maturing native, looks spectacular in late spring with layer-cake

66    March 18, 2022

branches iced with tiny ivory flowers. The smaller native dogwoods (silky, gray and rough-leaved) nicely fill spaces along the edge of woods or as woody prairie accents with their dainty white-tocream flower clusters. After flowering, all dogwoods set fruits that birds love. Shiny red drupes ripen in autumn on the traditional dogwood, with soft strawberry-like fruits maturing on the Asian dogwood. The other natives have smoky blue, purple or white fruits. Each adds interest to the fall display, and all ably feed migratory flocks.

Most dogwoods earn acclaim for their brilliant scarlet foliage in the fall. Cornus obliqua, or Red Rover, is a newer selection of the swamp dogwood and is slightly more compact, with purple to red fall color. Winter interest comes in the form of decorative bark and interesting branch layers. The tree forms are mostly gray, with some reddish twigs. For winter, though, the showstopper dogwoods are the thickets of redtwig and yellowtwig dogwoods. The low-growing Cornus sericea, or Cardinal, has lovely scarlet stems, and Flaviramea is an awardwinning golden twig variety. C. stolonifera, or Arctic Fire, is the smallest and the brightest red. C. sanguinea, or Midwinter Fire, and Arctic Sun rank as the best of both worlds, with yellow stem bases and rich coral twigs. All of these shrubs are grown for their colorful stems. They perform best when pruned hard, typically a third of the stems each year, which allows the ability to cut them to use in winter urns and containers as a stunning seasonal accent. Choose the oldest and tallest branches to clip for best form the following year. Plant them where you can see them from the window on cold, snowy days.

Maize & Wheat Colombian Cafe By Mabel Suen

F

or traditional Colombian fare, guests have been flocking to Brentwood’s Maize & Wheat Colombian Cafe since it opened in November for arepas (cornmeal cakes), empanadas (sealed, deep-fried pastries), tropical juices and other dishes. The eatery comes from Claudia Marcella Niswonger, a native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, who moved here 14 years ago because of her husband’s career. Thereafter, Niswonger established El Fogón Colombian – an endeavor she began in 2017 with her daughter, Gerly, and late son, Jhon, as a way to introduce the food of her native land to the metro area at local festivals. After receiving ample encouragement from an eager customer base under the El Fogón name, Niswonger decided to give her popular arepas and empanadas a bricks-and-mortar home with her own café, where she hopes to offer even more traditional Colombian fare. “I’m very excited because this is the first time there is a Colombian restaurant here,” Niswonger says. “It’s my gift to St. Louis. I would like to have a huge variety of food and tropical juices showcasing Colombian food. I really want to change the image many people have of my country.” Made-to-order arepas – a staple of the menu – feature house-made yellow or white corn-based dough that’s grilled and stuffed with savory fillings. Breakfast options include the Colombian arepa stuffed with yellow plantain, corn, mozzarella and Colombian sausage, while lunch options include the arepa special, with chicken, mushroom and mozzarella. Niswonger recalls learning how to make empanadas with her caretaker, or “Nona,” to sell as street food while growing up. Her favorite today remains the favorite of her youth: shredded

beef seasoned with freshly ground cumin, garlic, onion and tomato, all in a fried pastry shell with rice and mozzarella. Additional menu highlights include stuffed potatoes – a traditional Colombian breakfast dish made of breaded and fried mashed potatoes with a hard-boiled egg, chicken or beef – served with aji, a spicy sauce of onion, tomato, vinegar and lemon. However, the café’s bestseller so far has been a fruity concoction not from the food menu but from the beverage menu: coconut lemonade. According to Niswonger, visitors can’t get enough of her tropical juices, and she intends to

add many more to the menu, including lesserknown flavors like lulo (also known as naranjilla), a refreshing fruit with notes of pineapple, citrus and kiwi – in addition to such food options as Colombian soups and tamales. “People are asking for more and more items,” Niswonger says. “This is such a nice location with such nice people. I wanted to have a simple menu, but they want more, and I’m happy to make it for them.” Maize & Wheat Colombian Cafe, 1912 S. Brentwood Blvd., Brentwood, 314-749-4778, maizeandwheat.com

SHOW & TELL

The Music of Ireland By Mark Bretz | Photo courtesy of Celtic Woman

Arriving at St. Louis’ Stifel Theatre on April 21 on its Postcards From Ireland tour will be the Irish female group Celtic Woman, which has performed in the metro area a staggering 16 times since the group’s formation in 2005. Usually composed of four or five singers, the current version of Celtic Woman includes original member Chloe Agnew, along with Tara McNeill, Muirgen O’Mahony and Megan Walsh. Celtic Woman’s eponymous debut album in 2005 reached No. 1 on Billboard’s world music chart, following the first airing of its special on PBS, and held the top position on the Billboard world music chart for a record-setting 81 weeks – only to be replaced by the group’s second album, “A Christmas Celebration,” which ascended to the top of the list in October 2006. Overall, Celtic Woman has been named Billboard’s No. 1 World Music Artist of the Year six times, and 12 of its studio albums have debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s world album chart. Rhona Kelly, executive producer of Celtic Woman, and Agnew took time from Celtic Woman’s busy 2022 tour to talk with Ladue News about the group’s incredible success and the music it shares with its fans. Celtic Woman has performed worldwide. What helps the brand achieve international acclaim? Kelly: Celtic Woman’s fresh fusion of traditional Irish music with classical favorites, contemporary and original songs has helped put us on the world music map.

Chloe is an original member who has now rejoined Celtic Woman. Why have so many performers come and gone through the years? Kelly: Celtic Woman has always been a platform for Irish female artists. Like any other show, people come and go depending on their life decisions along the way. The beauty of CW is we have always welcomed back previous performers down through the years. Chloe has rejoined for 2022, and [former member] Susan McFadden will be doing some dates on this tour with us also. Can you describe some of the instruments played most prominently in the music performed by Celtic Woman? Kelly: The fiddle/violin would be the most prominent instrument in the show. It is not traditionally Irish in origin but would be one of the most important instruments used in the traditional Irish repertoire. Uilleann pipes, bodhran, bagpipes, guitar, whistles and piano all feature in the show also. Uilleann pipes are traditionally Irish and date back to the 18th century, and the bodhran dates back to the 19th century. How important was the PBS programming of Celtic Woman concerts early on to the group’s incredible success? Kelly: The PBS audience reaction was an amazing platform for us to get our music and shows out there. [Now,] 17 years later, our relationship is still going strong. “Postcards From Ireland” aired Dec. 21 and will air again on PBS on March 22.

Show: Celtic Woman Venue: Stifel Theatre, 1400 Market St., St. Louis Date/Time: April 21, 7 p.m. Tickets: $29.50 to $150, ticketmaster.com

How do St. Louis audiences compare in their appreciation of Celtic Woman’s music to other cities in the United States and in other countries? Agnew: I can remember visiting and performing in St. Louis in 2005 on one of our very first U.S. tours like it was yesterday. It’s so incredible to think that here we are all these years later, still being welcomed back to one of our favorite cities to perform in! Some of our best memories of shows have been spent in St. Louis. Every time we come back, the audiences are bigger and louder than ever. We are so excited to bring our new show to all our wonderful fans in Missouri once again. I’ve loved every second of my time visiting St. Louis throughout the years. I’ll always make sure to take a walk down to the Gateway Arch or try to catch a St. Louis Blues game on our day off, and we never leave without getting an Imo’s pizza for the tour bus! Needless to say, we love St. Louis and can’t wait to see you all soon!

Comforting Cinnamon Apple Cake A Story by Mary Mack, recipe by Tim Garvey

lthough spring’s official start may be approaching on March 20, random chilly days and even snowfalls still may give many people reason to indulge in a blissful baked good – like the comforting cinnamon apple cake from Tim Garvey of Pretzel Boy’s. Since 2011, Garvey – with his wife, Jamie, and brother, Matt – has delighted metro area residents with the business’ doughy, twisted tasty creations. Known for delighting customers at events and parties with their impressive pretzel shapes and snack spreads, the Garveys now have extended their reach to three locations in the area. (They also make Pete’s Pops, gourmet ice pops ranging in flavor from avocado to golden milk and sweet matcha tea.) After a long few years of the COVID-19 pandemic, Garvey says he’s looking forward to this spring and summer, during which he and his team will return to the community in a big way – from markets to outside Busch Stadium with their pretzel and pop pushcarts and stands. Garvey says his mom still makes this cake (adapted from a recipe she ripped from a 1997 issue of Cooking Light magazine) every February on his birthday – adding that the cream cheese gives it just the right amount of moisture.

Ingredients  1¾ cup sugar  ½ cup margarine, softened  1 tsp vanilla extract  6 ounces cream cheese, softened  2 large eggs  1½ cups all-purpose flour  1½ tsp baking powder  ¼ tsp salt  2 tsp ground cinnamon  3 cups peeled and chopped Rome apples Preparation | Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat 1½ cups sugar with the margarine, vanilla and cream cheese in a mixer at medium speed until well-blended (about 4 minutes). Add in eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Combine flour, baking powder and salt, and then add dry mixture to wet ingredients, beating at a low speed until blended. Combine ¼ cup sugar and cinnamon, and then mix with chopped apples in a bowl. Stir apple mixture into batter to combine; then pour batter into a greased 8-inch springform pan, and sprinkle with any remaining cinnamon mixture. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Let cake cool completely on a wire rack. When you are ready to cut, use a serrated knife. NOTE: If you cannot find Rome apples, Pink Lady or Honeycrisp can be used as alternatives. If you don’t have a springform pan, you can use a 9-inch swore cake pan and reduce the cook time by minutes.

s the first American model with Down syndrome to represent an international skin care line, metro area resident Grace Strobel is making history while making a name for herself. The St. Louis-based Missouri Historical Society is documenting her achievements by adding seven of Strobel’s donated clothing items to its permanent collection. “It was important to the Missouri Historical Society team to bring Grace’s garments into our permanent collection for several reasons,” says Adam MacPhàrlain, curator of clothing and textiles for MHS, in a press release. “First, because these garments share Grace’s story – a local woman doing notable work both with her modeling career as well as public speaking. “And second, when collecting around disability, we often default to stereotypical representations of life with a disability, such as collecting mobility devices or T-shirts promoting disability rights and recognition. These are important pieces to collect, but it’s also important to show the diverse and active lives people with disabilities have. The clothing Grace donated demonstrates her career and her personal style and doesn’t focus on Down syndrome as a negative.” Grace Strobel was born in Newport Beach, California, grew up in the metro area and now lives in Chesterfield with her parents. At 21 years of age, she jump-started her own modeling career when the portraits she posted on Facebook went viral, garnering more than 220,000 shares from around the world. Her mom, Linda Strobel, had set up the photo shoot with local photographer Trenna Travis after her daughter expressed interest in modeling. News outlets, beauty companies and apparel brands took notice of her potential. “I love modeling – I love to have people see my photos and start having ily Fam l e a different perception of what b The Stro it means to have a disability,” Strobel says. “I feel strong and confident. Just because you have a disability – it doesn’t mean you can’t have a fulfilling life.” By the age of 23, Strobel had appeared on national TV programs and became part of Obagi’s

global SKINCLUSION campaign – an awareness initiative led by the California-based skin care company promoting products for all skin tones and types. Since partnering with Obagi in 2019, she’s signed two contracts with the company. “This partnership means the world to me, and I am so excited to be a SKINCLUSION Ambassador because I love what Obagi stands for: diversity, inclusion and beauty,” Strobel expresses. A T-shirt bearing the Obagi logo and SKINCLUSION campaign name is among the items Strobel donated to MHS. Other items of particular significance include The Grace Dress designed by Alivia – a brand she modeled for in 2020 – and a Blue Windsor dress with elegant, sheer long sleeves, which she wore during her appearance on “The Today Show” in 2019. “I think the blue dress I wore on ‘The Today Show’ was pretty special,” Strobel reflects. “After the show, my mom and I were walking around the streets of NYC, and people were stopping us to say, ‘Hey! I just saw you on TV!’ And then [they] asked to get their picture taken with me. Talk about feeling good!” Now 25, Strobel continues to expand her modeling portfolio, make connections across the industry and share her inspiring story. Already this year, Strobel booked a photo shoot with beauty brand amika and attended a Fenty Beauty event in Los Angeles, where she met the cosmetic company’s celebrity founder, Rihanna. In addition to partnering with Fenty Beauty as an influencer, Strobel represents apparel brands Veronica Beard and Alivia. Locally, the Women of Achievement recognized Strobel last year for her volunteerism and youth outreach, which she began in 2017 after incidents of bullying in her own adolescence years. With her mom’s support, she launched #TheGraceEffect, a kidfriendly presentation about overcoming obstacles and treating others with kindness and respect. Within the next couple of months, MHS officials will make Strobel’s clothes available to view in its online collection, where MHS digitally stores about 20,000 pieces of clothing and accessories dating from the late 18th century to the present. Strobel hopes those who come across her mementos will believe “that anything is possible,” she says. “Never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot achieve. Push boundaries and live your life.” Missouri Historical Society, Library & Research Center, 225 S. Skinker Blvd., St. Louis, 314-746-4500, mohistory.org

ssembly Required,” a new exhibition at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, which opened March 4, will run till July 31 under the oversight of Stephanie Weissberg, one of the museum’s two sterling curators. According to a mid-January press release from the Pulitzer, which is the exhibition’s sole venue, the exhibition showcases works created during the past five-plus decades by a cosmopolitan nonet of artists who strive to engage viewers as collaborators in the creative process: Francis Alÿs, Rasheed Araeen, Siah Armajani, Tania Bruguera/INSTAR, Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, Yoko Ono, Lygia Pape and Franz Erhard Walther. Those nine, the release continues, “were selected for their shared belief in public action and its role in transforming society. Taken as a whole, the work in ‘Assembly Required’ poses vital questions about how art enables us to imagine new ways of being in the world.” An epigraph to the press release comes from Clark: “Every possible happening is there in potential, ready to be realized in the act. Then for the first time, anyone is fit for the act of creating.” In its illustrious history, the museum has never shied from showcasing expansive and thought-provoking exhibitions like this, as the press release strongly suggests. “Throughout the run of ‘Assembly Required,’ the Pulitzer galleries will serve as a space for social engagement and communication and a place in which to consider civic life – a particularly salient topic today – as visitors interact directly with the artworks and with each other,” it quotes Cara Starke, the museum’s executive director, as stating. “We look forward to seeing our visitors reflect on how art and artmaking can change our lives.” In that regard, the press release continues that “Assembly Required” collectively involves “distinct social and political moments and issues, from the unrest in the United States during the Vietnam War to Peru’s military dictatorship in the 1990s and more. Each artist offers unique perspectives on social change, addressing the need for optimism and hope in the face of global tensions.” Of particular note to Beatles fans, the exhibition opens with a selection from Ono’s 1964 book “Grapefruit” and with a project inspired by that book. “Painting to Be Stepped On,” the aforementioned project, “will be placed on the floor across from the building’s entryway so that visitors may engage with the work when they enter the museum by stepping on or over it,” states the press release. “This will set the tone of the exhibition as a space to think outside of expected behavior at museums, such as not touching the art, but rather introducing a sense

of playfulness and creativity – and touch – while also hinting at the subversive.” Works of three artists involved in the Brazilian Neo-Concretist movement of the late 1950s also will number among those included in “Assembly Required.” Representing Pape, a co-founder of Neo-Concretism, will be documentation from what the press release characterizes as one of her most famous works: “Titled ‘Divisor,’ this performative work was staged in the streets of Rio [de Janeiro] in 1968, the year in which the dictatorship suppressed public assembly, introduced mass censorship and suspended habeas corpus, making citizens vulnerable to arrest without cause. “Pape invited dozens of local children to march through the streets under an enormous white sheet, which unified them as a single entity while still retaining their individualism. It was a highly radical gesture during a repressive regime.” Otherwise, from Alÿs, a Belgian native based in Mexico, comes the 2002 “When Faith Moves Mountains,” conceived two years earlier after a trip to Lima, Peru, “in the final days of the [Alberto] Fujimori dictatorship, a time of mass protests and clashes in the streets,” the press release notes. For the one-time performance, the press release states, “Alÿs invited 500 volunteers from a local engineering school to work together to move a 1,500-footlong sand dune in a desolate area on the outskirts of Lima. Over the course of the day, they shifted the dune by about 4 inches. The work – seen here through video projections and more than 100 drawings, paintings and related ephemera – is at once a gesture of optimism, an allegory about the potential of the collective will and a realist observation about the enormity of the challenges to achieving longterm change.” Pulitzer Arts Foundation, 3716 Washington Blvd., St. Louis, 314-754-1850, pulitzerarts.org
