CONTENTS SOCIETY WITHOUT EVEN TURNING THE PAGES, OUR SEASONED LADUE NEWS readers (our favorite kind!) will be able to tell, just by picking up this week’s paper, that we’ve been busy lately. That’s because this latest edition is bursting at the seams with a few more pages than usual; thanks, in large part, to the 2015 LN Platinum List. If you’re a relatively new LN reader (another kind we like), welcome! As you’ll see, our latest Platinum List rankings reflect the choicest preferences when it comes to shopping, dining, diversions and customer service, as determined by our readers. And, much like our two best kinds of readers (see above), the Platinum List offers us an opportunity to salute established only-in-St. Louis institutions, like Tony’s, the Saint Louis Zoo and Marquard’s, that are recognized year after year. Also, this annual input from our readership allows us to tell you about what’s new in St. Louis, and why these destinations quickly are becoming local favorites. The 2015 Ladue News Platinum List begins on p. 33. With all that build-up, you’ll probably want to start turning the pages...now.

PAUL BROWN I’VE BEEN GOING TO THE MUNY SINCE I was a child. My daughter was a Muny Kid for several seasons, and my parents went on their first date there in the 1940s. When dusk falls and the stars begin to twinkle, the orchestra strikes up the overture, and the shows, the audiences and the decades blend together again.

FRED MILLER THE SAINT LOUIS ZOO IS, IN MY OPINion, the best in the country! I’ve been to the ‘world-famous’ San Diego Zoo, and it doesn’t hold a candle to our zoo. We love taking family and friends to this famous St. Louis institution! Delicious

SALUT D’AMOUR

A

BY BRYAN SCHRAIER

BEAUTIFUL SPRING EVENING served as the perfect setting for Salut D’Amour, a benefit concert for the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis featuring David and Miran Halen and Chamber musicians. The event was held in celebration of David Halen’s 20th year as concertmaster for the St. Louis Symphony, as well as in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of the release of his solo CD of the same name. The evening featured a special proclamation from Mayor Francis Slay in honor of the Halens for their contributions to the community. Other highlights included a joint performance with the couple’s son, Christopher, as well as a surprise tango number on-stage by Miran Halen and her ‘instructor,’ Dance St. Louis’ Michael Uthoff. The evening’s co-chairs were Tom and Carol Voss; honorary co-chairs were Wilfred and Ann Lee Konneker. LN served as a proud media sponsor of Salut D’Amour.

PAUL BROWN’S PERSONS OF INTEREST

MIKE MATHENY

The Man with the Manifesto

M

IKE MATHENY HAS BECOME a man who is defined by his character. From all indications, the manager of the Cardinals is a good and decent soul, who also just happens to have a propensity for winning. He doesn’t claim to have figured it all out: He readily admits he doesn’t have the answers for fixing society, and that he is certain that the team can’t win ‘em all. But part of what Matheny does know he is now sharing with all of us in what has become known as his ‘manifesto.’ The manifesto chapter for Matheny started in 2008. It was after his 13-year career as a majorleague catcher ended, and long before he would have a chance to become the skipper who would successfully replace the legendary Tony La Russa. Matheny was looking for ways to move past life in the pros when the parents belonging to his son’s youth baseball team asked him to be the team’s coach. Matheny wrote the parents a letter in response, which started out like this: Dear Fellow Parents: I’ve always said I would coach only a team of orphans. Why? Because the biggest problem in youth sports is the parents. He figured it would go over like a lead balloon, but he says it spelled out exactly what he expected from the parents and their kids. “I was writing a letter that was basically going to give them an out,” Matheny explains. “I was saying what I believe; if you don’t agree, just let me know, I go away.” The parents not only agreed, but one of them copied the letter and put it out on social media, where it went viral because of its message that put character ahead of winning. It also ultimately led to Matheny writing his book, The Matheny Manifesto. The book’s official rollout was last month when a sellout crowd of more than 1,300 people packed into Lindenwood University’s theatre to listen to Matheny speak and buy a signed copy. I got acquainted with Matheny in the green room backstage, and got a firsthand glimpse at what makes his character so special and why so many readers are flocking to the book. I found out he’s ‘old-school,’ and appreciative of the chance he has to reach people because of baseball and the Cardinals. “It made me realize that this platform I have, to be able to wear this great uniform, continues to blow me away. I’ve got an opportunity to impact a lot of people—at least get them thinking—that’s always a humbling reminder.” Matheny talked a lot about accountability and why respect (especially among young people) is harder to find, but more important than ever. He also explained what it takes to be a good team player and a good leader. “I define my job as leading, challenging and encouraging, and that’s what a leader is called to do; then you can change the context

and take away baseball and apply it to your home or work or any other activity.” He also is, unashamedly, a Christian. “Without question, that’s at the heart of everything I do, but I’m a work in progress,” he admits. “There have been times in my life where I shied away because I thought it wasn’t politically correct—and shame on me.” There’s another chapter of Matheny’s life that also helped shape him into the person he is today: his well-documented financial troubles that cost him millions and tested his faith. “I don’t know of anything that’s been more impactful in my life or anything I’ve ever grown as much from.” He’s referring to a real-estate deal that went bad when the markets nosedived in ’08. “It was a scary time for our family because I didn’t know what was going to happen next, and I was getting hit hard.” With the help of family and friends, he remained

positive and full of faith. “I had this peace, and I had a joy that life is bigger than stuff; and there’s a lesson that I’m going to learn and there is a God that loves me regardless of how it all plays out.” Through all the troubles, Matheny kept helping coach his son’s team and they became winners. He went with them on a baseball/mission trip to the Dominican Republic in 2011, where they helped build houses and played baseball games with the local teams. In the book, he describes how while he was there, he got the call from the Cardinals to inform him he was going to be their new manager. Matheny went from coaching a youth team to managing the most fabled and World Series-winning franchise in the National League. It wasn’t his manifesto itself that got him where he is today; more likely, it was that character within that brought his manifesto to life.

ON THE COVER THE JACK AND J.T. SNOW FOUNDATION

Keep Hope Alive BY LISA WATSON

FIVE YEARS AGO, STEPHANIE AND BARCLAY Gebel noticed some symptoms in their daughter, Raquel, that had them concerned. She was having bladder control problems and was lethargic, both classic symptoms of juvenile diabetes. Then, after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Stephanie took her in for a 5-year checkup with her pediatrician. That was when they realized Raquel’s problems went deeper: She also had optic atrophy. “As a parent, when you’re in that position, and you see the doctor shaking his head, you know something is wrong,” Stephanie Snow Gebel recalls. Raquel was tested for a brain tumor, and when those results came back negative, Dr. Lawrence Tychsen requested a genetic test for an extremely rare disease called Wolfram Syndrome. “It took two-and-a-half to three months to get the results back, and it was positive,” Gebel says. “Everyone was stunned, because Dr. Tychsen actually sat on the board for Wolfram Syndrome

at Children’s Hospital. It was fortunate because he knew about the disease, and a lot of ophthalmologists do not.” Wolfram Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder. In addition to severe diabetes, patients experience neurodegeneration, such as loss of vision, loss of hearing, difficulty controlling movement and eventually difficulty breathing. Many patients do not live past the age of 30. There is currently no treatment for the syndrome, which was discovered in 2000 by the late Dr. Alan Permutt and his team at Washington University School of Medicine. After Raquel’s diagnosis, Permutt told Gebel that they had hopes to develop a treatment, but without funding, the clinical trials could not take place. That’s when Gebel decided it was time to “revolutionize the diabetes world,” she says. “Raquel is a phenomenal little girl. From the time she was diagnosed, she’s always tried to be a positive force...My

Dr. Fumihiko Urano with Raquel Gebel

husband Barclay and I have a hard time, because you have to watch your child deteriorate in front of your eyes. She teaches us that if she’s going to go blind, she’ll still be fine. She’s an old soul—the sick kids are the ones who accept it. And we have the chance to change the course of this disease.” To make that change happen, Gebel founded The Jack and J.T. Snow Foundation, named after her father, Jack Snow (‘The Voice of the Rams’) and her brother, JT Snow, a former first-baseman for the San Francisco Giants. Continued on page 93

LIV ING CONNECT THE DOTS

A Boost From Local Billionaires

F

BY BENJAMIN AKANDE

ORBES MAGAZINE’S ANNUAL LIST of the world’s wealthiest billionaires places the St. Louis metropolitan area in pretty good company. At least five of the world’s 500 wealthiest people live here. Only a handful of metro areas have such a relatively high number of wealthy residents. In fact, of the 20 cities with the highest concentration of billionaires, only three are in the United States: New York City, which leads the world with 78; San Francisco, with 26; and Dallas, with 16. Billionaires in the Gateway City include Jack Taylor, founder of Enterprise Holdings, the car rental empire, which operates the world’s largest fleet with more than 1.5 million cars under the Enterprise, Alamo and National brands. Forbes estimates the net worth of Taylor and his family at $12.7 billion. Other billionaires include real estate and sports tycoon Stan Kroenke, whose holdings include the St. Louis Rams; the world-famous soccer club, Arsenal; the Denver Nuggets; and the NHL Colorado Avalanche. Also, John Morris, majority owner of almost 90 Bass Pro shops as well as its Tracker Mariner Center, which builds and sells boats; and Pauline Keinath, whose great-grandfather founded agribusiness giant Cargill. And Ann Walton, a daughter of the late legendary tycoon Sam Walton and heir to the Wal-Mart fortune, also lives in the area. Having some of the world’s wealthiest people as neighbors is good for the community’s selfesteem. Many of them operate enterprises that provide employment to possibly thousands of

Benjamin Akande

people. Most of these wealthy people also give back to their communities. Take Kroenke, for example. The University of Missouri graduate apparently believes that charity literally begins at home. “Building communities takes much more than just developing and managing property,” says his real estate company, according to the THF Realty website. “A company must get involved in the community and share its successes, so the

community can prosper.” Over the years, several organizations in the area have been beneficiaries of the generosity of THF Realty, including Chesterfield Arts, BarnesJewish Hospital Foundation, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Charles Community College Foundation, Saint Louis Crisis Nursery and the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission. Taylor has long had a vision for a better St. Louis region. He channels this vision, in large part, through the Crawford Taylor Foundation, which focuses on community development, animal welfare, women and youth, and the environment. The Crawford Taylor Foundation’s beneficiaries include the Humane Society of Missouri, Forest Park Forever, St. Louis Food Bank, Saint Louis Art Museum, Our Little Haven, Ranken Technical College and Washington University. The foundation also gives out numerous grants each year. Although the foundation funds programs all over the United States, it prefers to focus on the St. Louis region. It’s no surprise that Morris is an outdoors enthusiast, which likely explains why his company contributes to causes that educate people about the outdoors and responsible stewardship of nature. But the company donates money to an array of charities each year, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Having a sprinkling of billionaires is great for our city’s prestige. But more important, it is a potential boon for the welfare of every member of our community. When these billionaires thrive, so does our community.

Benjamin Ola. Akande is a professor of economics and dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology at Webster University.

BUSINESS CONNECTION LEGAL CORNER: RED-LIGHT CAMERAS

Stop, Look... and Smile? BY BRITTANY NAY

T

HE RED-LIGHT CAMERA: Constitutional or unconstitutional? Accident preventer or traffic hazard? It’s been a great source of debate for almost a decade in St. Louis. According to the City of St. Louis, the red-light safety camera program has significantly decreased the number of drivers running red lights in intersections with cameras. Between May 2007 and November 2013, it reported the number of citations issued decreased by 63 percent. While the new technology is resulting in positive statistics, some local attorneys say the legal and administrative process by which red-light camera tickets are handled is unfair to drivers. Matt Radefeld of Frank, Juengel & Radefeld began seeing an uptick in clients seeking his counsel for red-light camera citations in 2009. “I Continued on page 26

Logic or Emotions in Divorce? St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

When a divorce begins, two competing interests can come into play. They are logic versus emotions. On one hand, when a family law case begins, people are ordinarily experiencing a range of emotions. All of a sudden their life is changing. To some, they might not have seen it coming. To others, it might have been a long time coming. But it still doesn’t change the dynamics. Change can cause people to feel emotions like stress, anxiety, anguish, and sadness. Some might feel one emotion more than the other. But for others, all of these emotions can cycle through their psyche in short periods of time. It is important for a party to deal

with these emotions. For many, seeing a counselor or other mental health professional in a divorce can help. Nobody should be ashamed about seeking help through a difficult time. It’s not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. Ultimately, dealing with the emotions early in the process can help lead a party to a logical place. Logic allows people to make rational decisions. Logic can cause people to see the forest from the bark on the trees. Ultimately, this can help a party make the correct decisions in terms of deciding what settlement terms might be advantageous, whether to settle or go trial and/or deciding whether mediation or collaborative law make sense. So, in the end, to get to a logical

place, it is important try to work through the emotions. Working through the emotions as best as possible, and also recognizing their existence, is really critical for most parties. liv ing Continued from page 25 don’t think it’s right that a car or an owner should be responsible for a driver who is committing the offense,” he says. “[In many red-light camera photos,] you can’t see who is driving. So if you borrow a car and run a red light, then the person who owns the car is liable.” While laws vary among municipalities, the Missouri Court of Appeals in January overturned a previous ruling that municipal laws set up for red-light cameras are in direct conflict with state law. “The state law has to deal with the driver of a vehicle, as opposed to the vehicle itself,” Radefeld notes. Much of the region remains in limbo when it comes to the law until the Missouri Supreme Court, which agreed in December to review it, makes a ruling. If the court deems it unconstitutional, drivers who previously paid the fines will receive their money back, Radefeld says. But with no official decision for the time being, drivers still are out there paying the tickets, he continues. “For about 10 jurisdictions in St. Louis County, however, there currently is an option to apply for 20 percent of the fine back through a class-action lawsuit.” John Schleiffarth of JCS Law is another local attorney who commonly counsels clients with the $100 tickets. “It puts the driver in a difficult position,” he says. “Some people take the position

that they would rather pay a lawyer than pay the city because they feel the tickets are unfair.” Schleiffarth agrees the citations are unconstitutional. “It removes the human aspect from policing—a police officer can use discretion and judgment whether or not to write a ticket—but no one is there to see exactly what actually happened if it’s a camera.” He adds that he has had success with dismissing the tickets in both the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. Another issue that has arisen involving redlight cameras is how the related citations have become significant revenue for both the corporation providing the technology, as well as the local municipalities employing it, local lawyers say. “The [red-light tickets] are simply another money-maker for the municipality,” Radefeld says. “I read that 900,000 people had paid fines on red-light tickets in Missouri. At $100 each, that is some serious revenue.” Chet Pleban of Pleban & Petruska Law agrees. “People should ask for a trial, and make them prove it. But typically, people aren’t going to hire lawyers to defend these cases, and that makes it easy for the city to collect the money.” Schleiffarth notes policy should be driven by public interest, not revenue. “American Traffic Solutions is the main provider of the camera equipment,” he says, “and the difficulty with that is you have a corporation that is thriving—more money is going to

the corporation than the city. Then, there also is a temptation for the city and the corporation to shorten the length of yellow lights, so there are more tickets—but this also may cause more accidents. We have so much great new technology, but there are also some ways that technology can be misused. There needs to be a limit on how much technology can be used for police work, particularly for traffic infractions.” Pleban also points out that while the red-light camera ticket involves a $100 fine, it does not include a deduction of two points off the driver’s license like other traffic violations. “I am all for red-light cameras if it’s about safety, but let’s do it the right way: Photograph the driver of the vehicle so you have that to prosecute them because you can identify them, and also deduct the points off their license.” Despite drivers’ views on the tickets, attorneys advise not to ignore them. Schleiffarth warns that neglecting the citation could hurt your credit score. Pleban recommends paying the fine under protest, by writing a note on the ticket before sending the payment. This way, he explains, if the Missouri Supreme Court rules to declare the law unconstitutional, the municipality cannot keep drivers’ payments under the voluntary pay doctrine. Radefeld adds that drivers who take care of the tickets should have the understanding that later on they may be able to get their money back.

LIV ING TALKING POINTS

Your ‘After-Duction’

I‌

’LL BET YOU’VE BEEN TO A PRESENTATION and experienced something like this: The emcee takes the microphone immediately after a speaker finishes his or her talk and says, in an underwhelming manner, Thanks for coming. Have a safe drive home! Ending a valuable presentation program like that is unfortunate. Regrettably, this anti-climatic way to draw a great message from a speaker to a close often is the norm. It’s done this way because no one, especially the master of ceremonies and others in charge of the event, thought about a better way to end it. I bring you good news: There is! If you’ve read any of my books, posts, or seen me speak, you know I’m a big proponent of writing your own introduction. It is an important and integral part of a presentation. It sets the stage, establishes the credibility of the speaker, and builds enthusiasm for what is to follow. The person doing the introduction should deliver it as if they wrote it. The same principal holds true for the words the emcee should speak after the speaker closes their presentation. This is called the ‘after-duction.’ Here, again, the speaker should write the afterduction for the host to deliver as if they wrote it. The after-duction is the professional thing an emcee should do, but they usually need help from the speaker. It should be given and reviewed with them before presenting. The after-duction serves several purposes. It: • ‌Thanks the speaker for attending the meeting and their presentation. ‌• Reinforces something of value from their message. ‌• Helps, where appropriate, the speaker sell additional products and services. This is important because a presenter will often reduce their speaking fee with the anticipation of selling their wares. ‌Some organizations have limited funds to hire a speaker. The presenter should be compensated, in some way, for their time and effort. The verbiage, where relevant and appropriate, could be: • Thank you, (speaker), for a great presentation and message! ‌• One of my takeaways is ________. • ‌I’ve asked (speaker) to stick around for awhile after we adjourn to answer any questions you still have. •D ‌ on’t forget to give him your business card for his free ________. • I‌ suggest checking out the books and CDs he has made available.

BY FRED MILLER

JUST AS A GREAT INTRODUCTION PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE EMCEE AND MAKES THEM LOOK GOOD, THE SAME WILL HAPPEN WHEN THEY DELIVER AN EXCELLENT AND RELEVANT AFTER-DUCTION. • ‌If you ask nicely, I’ll bet he’ll be glad to autograph them for you! • ‌You might even want to get a picture of yourself with ________. ‌• Now would be a great time to sign up for his upcoming ________. All the above statements are better coming from the emcee versus the speaker. The audience isn’t always keen about a presenter hawking their products and services from the stage. Having the host do it is akin to an endorsement! Speaking opportunities are business, career and leadership opportunities! That is my mantra. No one ever challenges that statement. Why would they? Being the master of ceremonies for an event is a speaking and leadership opportunity. Too often, those in this position aren’t as adept with

the role as they would like to be, or think they are! Writing your introduction and after-duction will help and benefit them by making them look more professional. Just as a great introduction puts the spotlight on the emcee and makes them look good, the same will happen when they deliver an excellent and relevant after-duction. These won’t be the final words from the emcee; rather, the after-duction serves to reinforce the value the presenter brought to the event and, in turn, raise to the forefront the responsible individuals and sponsoring organization. All good outcomes for an event! Follow these suggestions for crafting your afterduction for the master of ceremonies to deliver, and this component of your presentation will be – NO SWEAT!

BUSINESS CONNECTION THE SOCIAL SCENE

Protect Your Password

BY RICHARD GAVATIN

E

VEN AS LATE AS AD 2015, THERE are still really, really bad passwords in use. Did you know that ‘123456’ still is the No. 1 password? Second on the list is ‘password,’ third is ‘12345.’ Also popular on the list of shame is ‘qwerty.’ What is that, you ask? Well, look at your keyboard: the top row, left to right spells ‘qwerty’—not a good idea. So, there are bad passwords and there are bad ways of storing passwords. Some people store their passwords on their computer, such as in a file on their desktop screen—again, not a good idea. If you insist, then at least password-protect that file. So, for instance, if you keep all your online passwords in a spreadsheet, then protect that spreadsheet file with a password, which, unfortunately, you just have to remember. So, what are good practices? 1. Use passwords with eight characters or more with mixed types of characters, meaning uppercase, lowercase, numbers, letters and symbols. Note: If you include an uppercase letter, it’s not necessary to make that the first letter of the password. Swordfish may not be as good as swordfISh. 2. Avoid using the same username/password combination for multiple websites. 3. Use a Password Manager to organize and protect passwords, generate random passwords, and automatically log into websites.

So, what is a Password Manager? There literally are hundreds of Password Manager programs out there. Most of them are free. What do they do? They store all your passwords in a secure online ‘vault.’ In order to get to that ‘vault,’ you must have a secure password. Now, there are requirements on the password you choose to enter your own vault. The one this author uses is called LastPass (lastpass.com). I make no claims that this is the ‘best’ (out of hundreds) or the most reliable, but it has worked fine for me. The way it works is that all sensitive data is encrypted and decrypted locally before syncing with LastPass. Your key never leaves your device, and is never shared with LastPass. Your data stays accessible only to you. That makes it as secure as can be expected. In order for me to get into my vault, I use a 15-character-long password that I just remember. Once in the vault, my passwords are sorted by category, ‘bank,’ ‘ credit cards,’ ‘emails,’ ‘cats,’ ‘jobs’ and others. Within each, you can check the password that is stored as *********, but you have the choice to click an ‘eye’ that allows you to see the password in plain text. For larger organizations For companies or larger organizations of any kind, it is common to enforce a password policy. That could entail anything from just using passwords based on usernames to big, rather complicated systems that

regular ‘private’ users never have to worry about. So, for instance, if the user name pattern is firstname.lastname@company.com; then the password may be firstname-dateofbirth, so John Doe’s email would be john.doe@company.com, and his password john102070. Is this a good password? Not really, but it is an easy way for a large company to make their usernames and passwords consistent. Many companies require at least a 15-character password. What should I do? Use different email addresses. With so many free email services, you can use multiple email addresses. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Charter (if you are a subscriber) and many others allow you to set up email addresses for every aspect of your life. You may have one address at work (or even more than one), one for your personal/family use, another for friends, another for that special interest you have (collecting stamps?). This practice will reduce risks of being ‘hacked.’ The most important advice—and the perhaps most difficult to follow—is this: Change your passwords on a regular basis. This is a well-known security best practice. The longer you use the same passwords, the more vulnerable you are. A good habit would be to change all your passwords every six months, even if you use a password manager. If you have a lot of different passwords, this may be an arduous task—but not as labor-intensive as being hacked.

SPRING ALLERGIES

Find What Works for You BY CONNIE MITCHELL

F

INALLY, SPRING IS BEGINNING TO SHOW itself. The flowers, the buds on trees, the warm breezes...that carry the pollen from the flowers and buds...the sneezing, the sniffling, the wheezing. If you experience allergic reactions to the proliferation of spring pollens, there are plenty of strategies available to reduce unpleasant symptoms and breathe easier. “It is recommended that if a person is sensitive to tree or grass pollens, he or she should start a medication regimen early to prevent more bothersome symptoms at the height of spring pollen season,” says Dr. Jennifer Monroy, a Washington University allergist and immunologist on staff at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. Tree pollen peaks between mid-April and early May, while grass pollen continues through June. Monroy advises staying indoors during morning hours, when pollen counts tend to be highest. “Windy days also produce higher pollen counts. It is recommended to shut your windows in your home and car to allow the air conditioner to filter the pollen,” she says. Changing clothes and brushing pets after being outside also help reduce pollen exposure. “Medicines that can be used to treat your allergy

symptoms include antihistamines, such as Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra,” Monroy adds. “These antihistamines are less sedating than taking Benadryl and last 24 hours. Using a neti pot once a day is helpful to rinse out pollen in your nose. It’s important to follow the instructions and use distilled water.” Although these over-the-counter remedies may be helpful, older people should be cautious. “The use of antihistamines and decongestants may make things worse and may have adverse side effects on the elderly population,” notes Dr. J. Collins Corder, a physician specializing in internal medicine and geriatrics with West County Medical Associates and on staff at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. “Medications the patient takes that may worsen nasal symptoms include diuretics, beta blockers, anti-vertigo drugs and anxiety medications. Firstline antihistamines like Benadryl should be avoided due to severe side effects in the elderly.” Corder advises that older people discuss their symptoms with their physician. “Saline sprays, some antihistamines like loratadine, nasal steroids and other medications may be helpful,” he says. Not only did she bump into things when walking, but Kennedy’s driving was affected. “After a few car accidents, I finally took myself to a specialist who diagnosed me with the disorder,” she says. That disorder is Usher syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that is the most common condition affecting both hearing and vision. A syndrome is a condition in which more than one symptom is present; and Usher syndrome causes both hearing and vision loss, as well as problems with balance. Although no one in Kennedy’s family had previously been diagnosed with Usher syndrome, both of her parents carry the recessive gene that causes it. “Today, at age 30, I have only my central vision left with a field of vision of about 10 degrees,” Kennedy says. “My hearing has remained relatively stable since I was child, with an approximate loss of about 80 percent. Balance has become compromised as I’ve lost my vision over the years; so when I lose my sense of orientation, I tend to feel thrown off a bit.” After her diagnosis, Kennedy returned to her St. Louis home and completed her degree in architecture at Washington University in 2010. However, her vision loss has caused her to adjust her original career plans. “Determining what my career will be has become a big question mark in my life as my vision worsens,” she says. “I worked at a marketing company for a few years, but sitting at a computer for eight hours a day eventually became too strenuous for my eyes.” The visual component of Usher syndrome is a retinal condition that causes progressive vision loss, known as retinitis pigmentosa. The retina is the

light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, and as the retina’s light-sensing cells gradually deteriorate vision worsens. There is no proven treatment or cure. “Research is critical,” says Dr. Rajendra Apte, a Washington University retina expert. “My (research) group is less than 10 years away from a potential therapy for the blindness associated with eye involvement from retinitis pigmentosa. We are a team: The patients, the clinicians and scientists— and everyone has to pitch in to make a difference.” Apte notes that his research work is heavily dependent on private philanthropy. “A bulk of research in order to prevent retinal neurons from dying and to reduce progression of dysfunction and neurodegeneration in the retina is being done in my lab with multiple collaborators from Washington University and several others around the world. Possibilities are tremendous, which is why support is critical.” Kennedy is working to help bolster that kind of support. “My mother, Terry Cacciatore, and I started The Megan Foundation about a year and half after I was diagnosed,” she says. “We were frustrated at how little resources there were for people like us, looking for answers and information about (Usher syndrome).” The foundation raises funds to increase awareness and support research. “I’ve worn hearing aids since I was about 3 years old,” Kennedy says. “Sunshine, my guide dog, is one tool I use to get around independently. I use accessibility tools on my computer to read the screen better, such as inverting the contrast and zooming in and out on the screen. I have magnifiers, as well, to read my mail.” Kennedy also expresses excitement and optimism about what the future holds. Her husband recently accepted a job in Denver, Colorado, and she is enthused about pursuing new opportunities there. “I think the most important thing I’d like people to know about Usher syndrome is that not all

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

“I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I’D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT USHER SYNDROME IS THAT NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE, AND THAT VISION AND HEARING LOSS ARE NOT ALWAYS READILY APPARENT.” MEGAN KENNEDY

disabilities are visible, and that vision and hearing loss are not always readily apparent,” Kennedy says. “Patience and compassion are great virtues to practice towards everyone, especially when you run into someone who may not be able to see or hear them at first.” More information about The Megan Foundation is online at meganfoundation.org.

A simple idea (of delivering pizza back in the day when no one else in the city offered such services) launched a young married couple’s dreams, but that isn’t the only notion that makes their pizza stand apart from the rest. Imo’s changed up the traditional thin crust creation of St. Louis by disembarking from the standard mozzarella topping and choosing instead the squishy provel cheese, which is now replicated throughout the city. Add to that all fresh ingredients and is it any surprise that a classic has our readers salivating? We think not. RUNNERS UP: Dewey’s Pizza Katie’s Pizza Cafe Pi Pizzeria Red-L Pizza

A Sweet Style for A Suite

‌O

nce again, I was fortunate to be in Palm Beach this year for the grand opening of the American Red Cross Designers’ Show House, La Florentia. The 2015 property is located in Lake Worth, Florida, a 7,000-square-foot home is lovingly called ‘Birthday Cake Castle.’ Why, you ask? A previous owner, Upton Close, gifted this home to his bride, Margaret Fretter Nye. Built

in 1925 and designed by Sherman Childs, a well-known architect and student of Addison Mizner, the home features a birthday cake stained-glass window and candle-like pillars flanking the entrance to the home. As a designer, it always is interesting to meet other design professionals and find out how they envisioned their space. I met William Bainbridge Steele at the preview party, and discussed how he approached his space, which was the original master bedroom on the second floor. Here is our interview: Continued on page 68

HOME Continued from page 66

What is the process to participate in this show house? Each year, the Red Cross Show House committee invites certain designers to participate—both local and nationally recognized designers. What drew you initially to the space you designed? I loved the raw space, the original touches that made the room unique to the architecture of the home.

Did you know immediately how you wanted to design the space? Did you have a color scheme in mind? As soon as I was notified that this was the room I would be invited to design, I was thrilled. I knew that the space was very challenging: a large, non-confirming space that would challenge my design sensibility and creativity. Where do you draw your inspiration in general, and was there a particular a-ha moment for this space? My inspiration was old Florida, an age of grace, simplicity and comfort. I wanted to design a space that was visually appealing, and most important, livable. Some designers choose to design show-house spaces with a shock value. My concept is always to design a livable space—a room where someone could move right in.

How did you get your start in interior design? I have been in the business for 25 years. Since I was a young child, I was constantly rearranging my bedroom—sometimes, monthly. I am sure it drove my mother crazy, but she indulged me and urged me to be creative. Designing lifestyles for my clients is a true life passion. Are you known for a particular signature look? My signature look is classic, elegant, comfortable and inviting. Each room I undertake must have all of these qualities. The American Red Cross Designers’ Show House in Palm Beach, Florida, runs through April 4. Visit redcross.org/news/event/2015-Designers-Show-House for more information.

What piece in the space would you say is the signature piece? I love the lounge area with the game table. This invites one to sit, relax, enjoy the majestic views of Lake Worth, and play a game of backgammon.

i t h t h e wa r m weather we’ve recently had, it’s time to head to the range and begin hitting some balls. But first, let’s look at some local golf news and what’s happened since we signed off last fall. St. Louis again has a big voice in the world of golf: Thomas O’Toole Jr. recently was elected to serve a second one-year term as the 63rd president of the United States Golf Association at the USGA’s annual meeting in New York City. The St. Louis native will continue to lead the USGA’s professional staff of more than 300 and almost 1,200 volunteers who serve on more than 30 committees. “This year marks the beginning of a new and exciting time for the USGA,” O’Toole says. “We will begin our new broadcast partnership with Fox Sports, launch two new Four-Ball Championships and conduct our first U.S. Open in the Pacific Northwest. This is a historic time and I am honored to continue to work with our staff and the executive committee to guide the game we all love into the future.” O’Toole has been involved with the USGA since 1988 and has served as a rules official at more than 140 USGA championships, including every U.S. Open Championship since 1990. He also has been the official in-charge for more than 125 USGA championship qualifiers. In addition to chairing the championship committee from 2010 to 2013, O’Toole was a member of the Rules of Golf Committee from 2004 to 2013. In 1992, O’Toole helped to found the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, which serves eastern Missouri and central Illinois. He continues to serve on its executive board. O’Toole, a partner in the law firm of Mickes Goldman O’Toole, chairs its Business and Corporate Group, while his practice focuses on real estate, specializing in zoning/land use, condemnation and real estate transactions. He earned both his undergraduate degree and law degree from Saint Louis University. Golf Awards The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame has announced the formation of a new set of junior golf awards to be called the Jay Randolph Achievement Awards. The awards will be given annually at a Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremony. It begins April 27 at the Skip Viragh Performing Arts Theater on the Chaminade High School campus. Tickets range from $40 to $125, and can be purchased now online at stlshof.com or through Chaminade by calling at 993-4400, ext. 1302. At the ceremony, the Hall of Fame will celebrate St. Louis golf history with The Legends of Golf, an entertaining evening of conversation with the

legendary PGA stars Gary Player, Nick Price and St. Louis legend Dick Shapier. The trio, plus the iconic Bellerive Country Club, all will be inducted into the Hall for their achievements in St. Louis. The Jay Randolph Achievement Awards will be presented to the boys and girls who have won major events in the past year through the Gateway PGA, Metropolitan, CYC, Accelerated Tour, St. Louis District Golf Associations and the Missouri State Golf Associations. “I am deeply touched by this great honor bestowed on me and our family from the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame”, Randolph says. “It’s exciting for me to be in touch with our golfing youth, and a pair of the greatest amateurs ever to live and play in St. Louis, my friends Ellen Port and Jim Holtgrieve. They have played a big part in these awards coming to fruition and I’m grateful.” Metropolitan Open What has been good will be getting even better. On the heels of a successful 2014 version of the Metropolitan Open, the Country Club of St. Albans Metropolitan Open Committee is taking larger strides in ensuring the Open is one of the top events in the Midwest. The purse for the July 10 to 12 event is getting bigger. “On behalf of the Country Club of St. Albans, I am pleased to announce that the 2015 first-placeprize check for the championship will increase from $15,500 to a record $25,000,” says Jim Nienhaus, the chairman of the Open Championship Committee. “The increased purse is just another indication of the commitment The Country Club of St. Albans has to hold a professional golf championship at the

highest level. The club, as many already know, is in the midst of a comprehensive renovation project inside and out, but the major golf course/bunker renovation is probably the most exciting.” The 2014 Open attracted professionals from all around the country. Local professional Chris Brant captured his first professional victory in a thrilling six-hole playoff over Chris Thompson. A full field will be 144 players, amateurs who are members of MAGA with a USGA handicap index of 1.4 or below are eligible, and professionals from around the country will comprise the field. Nienhaus also highlights several changes to the 2015 championship that will be conducted July 10 to 12. “There will be a Sunday finish as well as an all walking event,” Nienhaus explains. “The Pro Am will have several celebrities participating as the tournament will be supporting two charities; PGA Reach and The First Tee of St. Louis.” The Open will tee off on Thursday (July 9) afternoon with the Pro-Am. Championship play will begin Friday, July 10, with all competitors playing 36-holes Friday and Saturday before a cut to the low 40 and ties is made for the final round Sunday. The tournament is free for spectators to come out and see one of the strongest fields to tee it up in St. Louis. Gateway Cup Returns After a one-year hiatus, the Gateway Cup Matches return in 2015 to Bellerive Country Club. The matches will be played April 12 and 13. The top golf professionals from the Gateway PGA and top amateurs from MAGA will tee it up against each another. Bellerive member Andy Frost will serve as captain of the MAGA Amateurs. The matches will be played over the following schedule, formats: •  Sunday, April 12: Fo u r- B a l l M a tc h e s (PM) •  Monday, April 13: Foursomes (AM); Singles Matches (PM) In 2013, the matches were played at Country Club of St. Albans on the Tavern Creek Course. After two days of competition the teams came out tied 14-14, which the PGA retained the title. Teams will be comprised of 14 members, which includes four seniors on each squad. We’ll be back next month and take a look at the local high school boys golf teams and top individuals, as well as the schedule of events for each organization. If you have any golf news to report, contact me at wlmayes@charter.net. Until next month, keep hitting them down the fairway.

The Club at Porto Cima

An Easy, Breezy Golf Getaway By Julia Christensen

hether you’re a golfer or yachtsman—or even if you just like being social—The Club at Porto Cima is offering unique membership experiences at its Lake of the Ozarks property, located west of St. Louis, about a three-hour drive away. “It offers a completely different lifestyle— people come here to let their hair down and enjoy the lake,” says Beth Sullivan, director of membership at the private country club. “The lake offers something that you can’t get anywhere else.” The Club at Porto Cima has two key names associated with it: Harold Koplar and Jack Nicklaus. Both legendary in their fields, businessman Koplar had the idea for the club—born out of a trip to Italy in 1993—and golfer Nicklaus designed the course. The property is the only 18-hole Nicklaussignature waterfront golf course in the state. It is a common sight on best-of lists, and was even named the 2010 No. 1 Golf Course in Missouri by the Missouri Golf Association, Sullivan notes. In addition to the course, members will find an

on-site pro shop, as well as the Swing Institute. At this facility, golfers can analyze their game using a Vector Launch Monitor and V1 Pro Digital Coaching System—plus, they can better their skill with help from PGA-certified instructors. Off the green, private dining is available at The Grille Room, an award-winning establishment equipped to handle everything from lunches to formal events. A state-of-the-art fitness facility is also at members’ disposal. And then there is the aquatic pièce de résistance: Porto Cima’s Yacht Club. The Yacht Club features not just the expected private marina—complete with 200 slips—but a swimming pool, tennis courts and poolside dining. The Club boasts itself as the only Midwestern private club of its kind, offering both full golf and yachting services. For those thinking of joining, ‘Stay and Play’ previews are available. The experience includes a two-night stay, two meals, two poolside cocktails, four rounds of golf, one 30-minute golf lesson and

they realized through their own experiences how much professional golfers need funding support. Annual expenses can reach $40,000 to $60,000 when factoring in travel, lodging, equipment and tournament entry fees, which can range from $800 to $1,500 per tournament, Pierce notes. The site has been well-received since its launch last October, Pierce says, with about 20 pro golfers from the U.S. and Europe currently signed on, including Golf Channel’s Big Break reality show contestants Charlie Harrison and Christian Heavens, and LPGA Tour players Lee Lopez and Natalie Sheary. ProUknow also has been officially endorsed by U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson. “It’s neat to see how quickly the company is growing,” Pierce says. “We’ve had interest from players in countries all over the world because golf really is a global game, and golfers need funding at an early level.” The pair’s ability to tag-team ProUknow’s Continued on page 93

DIV ER SIONS

The Cool Kids SO, SOME OF YOU KNOW THAT FOR THE PAST couple of months, I have been traveling between St. Louis and New York City, working as co-creator on the set of the television sitcom, Almost There, which is debuting on DirecTV this fall. A film set is an amazing thing. There are dozens of crew members, electricians, carpenters, set and costume designers, make-up artists, as well as actors, directors, camera people and network executives—and then there’s me. While everybody smiles and greets you hello, there’s a specific time of day that riddles me with anxiety and takes me right back to junior high. Suddenly, I’m not an executive producer or a writer, or even a pretty cool person. Suddenly, I’m the awkward, insecure geek on the outside looking in. I’m talking about lunch. Lunch on set is lovely. There’s a big room with long tables and a delicious buffet. There’s an incredibly friendly and accommodating catering crew happy to provide for any quirky dietary

peccadilloes. Cast and crew pile in laughing and chatting; and there I stand, holding a tray, looking like somebody’s going to beat me up for my algebra homework. With whom do I sit? I mean, the stylist Adam is nice and there’s a seat open next to him, but have I reached that level of intimacy? Is it like calling immediately after a good first date? Too much too soon? I could sit with the actors, but I don’t want to disrupt their process. They could be running lines or discussing—a bit too risky. This is exactly why I like assigned tables at weddings and charity events. I mean, isn’t it enough pressure to get all dressed up and endure cocktail-hour small talk without having to figure out with whom to sit? I think the smart people set it up right away: Claim a table with a clutch purse or a wrap, and reel in pre-selected companions right away. I can’t really do that on set, though. I mean, I genuinely like most of the people I see

at weddings and parties, and I really like all the people I work with on the show. How can the pressure of a May I join you? suck all the enjoyment out of it? In the end, I plop down at a table with a forced casualness next to Austin, the sound mixer; David, the costume designer; and an intimidating cameraman who looks like he could be an extra in a Twilight movie. I start to eat quickly to busy myself. When I look up, ‘Edward Cullen’ (see Twilight) is eyeing the large slice of coconut cake that occupies most of my plate. He gives me a nod and a half-smile, and says, Right on! I smile back and return to eating, lest I say something stupid that will somehow diminish my momentary cake coolness. See? That wasn’t so hard.

A FILM SET IS AN AMAZING THING...(AND) WHILE EVERYBODY SMILES AND GREETS YOU HELLO, THERE’S A SPECIFIC TIME OF DAY THAT RIDDLES ME WITH ANXIETY AND TAKES ME RIGHT BACK TO JUNIOR HIGH. SUDDENLY, I’M NOT AN EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OR A WRITER, OR EVEN A PRETTY COOL PERSON. SUDDENLY, I’M THE AWKWARD, INSECURE GEEK ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN. I’M TALKING ABOUT LUNCH. 88

THEATER REVIEW BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

Cinderella

THE TEMPLATE RATING: 8 out of 10

S

POILER ALERT: DO YOU ever wonder what to credit— or what to blame—for the romantic-comedy formula? I mean, it is a cinematic law of nature: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. Through the years, there have been some variations—maybe the girl is a prostitute hired for a week by a ruthless businessman, or maybe the girl is an inexperienced beauty who falls for a kinky billionaire, or maybe he’s a vampire... In the end boy gets girl, and you have a fairy-tale ending. OK, I think we’re all up to speed on the story here, so I will cut to the chase: The movie is terrific. Lily James is the picture of inner and outer beauty, Richard Madden is the refreshingly complex prince, and Cate Blanchett is icy and flawless as the woman who sets the bar for wicked stepmothers everywhere. Rounding out the cast are Helena Bonham Carter as the wise and wonderful fairy godmother, and Stellan Skarsgard as the arch enemy/ archduke. The real magic here lies in the direction. Kenneth Branagh has proven once again that he is as brilliant behind the camera as he is in front of it. Branagh trusts the story, clearly understanding that despite how many times it has been told, we never seem to tire of the simple romance. The formula doesn’t need aliens or vampires or car chases or kidnappings or hidden pregnancies or deep-dark secrets—it just needs romance.

Run All Night

A.K.A. ‘TAKEN 5’ RATING: 6 out of 10

SIGHT UNSEEN PHOTO COURTESY OF ERIC WOOLSEY

I

LOVE LIAM NEESON. I REALLY love him. I mean, it’s unhealthy. Sure, I’m not allowed within 500 feet of him, but that doesn’t in any way diminish my devotion. And when I say my commitment has been unwavering, that is an understatement. I actually liked The A-Team. I tolerated The Grey. I even made it all the way through Non-Stop. That said, he also seems to be a very savvy actor; because at 62, he’s making $10-million-dollar-a-role action movies like a camp kid makes pot-holders. In the past year alone, he’s made three—which brings us to Run All Night. Jimmy (Neeson) and Sean (Ed Harris) are long time, er, associates. When Jimmy kills Sean’s son to save his own child, Mike (Joel Kinnaman), father and son are forced to… say it with me: Run all night. Car chases, gun battles, explosions, mass casualties and general destruction ensue. I’m not a complicated woman. I don’t ask for much. But as compelling as Neeson and Harris are—honestly, I could watch them all day—the film doesn’t seem to trust their incredible magnetism to be enough, peppering the story with turns that seem to be there just for the heck of it. The biggest distraction, however, is Kinnaman. To describe his performance as wooden would be insulting to trees. In the end, Neeson pulls off a gripping action movie (did I mention I love him?). Yes, it’s just going to be one in his long line of action undertakings, but that’s not too shabby.

Sight Unseen BY MARK BRETZ

STORY: Jonathan Waxman is an artist and a very successful one. Only in his mid-30s, his paintings are purchased ‘sight unseen’ by collectors who are ardent aficionados of his art. Married in the last year to a dancer, he awaits the birth of his first child. And yet, there’s something unsettled about Jonathan. While in England to attend a retrospective of his work in London, he travels to a farmhouse in Norfolk to meet up with his former lover, Patricia, and her husband, Nick. They’re archeologists who get by on the modest sum they earn as they excavate ancient ruins. Nick’s specialty is sorting through the garbage, literally, of ancient civilizations in England. Jonathan’s visit conjures mixed emotions in himself and Patricia, and lightly disguised hostility in Nick. He’s not at all sure of himself, but when he sees a portrait of Patricia that he painted as a college student, he sees a chance to redefine himself. At what price, though?

HIGHLIGHTS: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies knows how to dig into the marrow of relationships, something he does in Sight Unseen with pinpoint precision. The production now being performed at New Jewish Theatre is a moving, melancholy account of how relationships change with the shifting sands of time. Under Bobby Miller’s incisive direction, the quartet of players in this achingly effective drama take an audience through the myriad paths of their characters’ complicated hearts.

COMPANY: New Jewish Theatre VENUE: Wool Theatre, Jewish Community Center, 2 Millstone Campus Drive DATES: March 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29 TICKETS: $38$42; 442-3283 or newjewish theatre.org RATING: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5 More reviews available at laduenews.com

Aaron Orion Baker captures the angst, as well as the anger, of Jonathan, a man who is uncertain of how he arrived where he is. Baker shrewdly shows Jonathan to be successful in his career, but not necessarily in his life. Baker’s real-life wife, Emily Baker, shines in her portrayal of the jilted lover, Patricia. Her performance in the work’s pivotal scene is at once heart-breaking and tragic, as her feelings are sorted through like the trash that Nick studies on his job. As Nick, David Wassilak immerses himself into an acceptance of the humdrum existence, but also can deliver surly, snide verbal shots at the interloper Jonathan. There’s not much to like about Nick, and yet Wassilak can deliver some empathy for his own sad, forlorn character in his studied portrayal. Em Piro completes the cast with a cagy, coy turn as a German arts writer who has her own agenda when interviewing the celebrity American artist at his retrospective. Sight Unseen cleverly depicts how art can imitate life, but not always atone for it.

Sidney Street Cafe

Benton Park Beckons... BY SIDNEY LEWIS

W

E’VE BEEN ON A BIT OF A NOSTALGIA kick of sorts recently, revisiting some old favorites that we haven’t experienced in far too long. The latest is Sidney Street Cafe. This Benton Park favorite just celebrated its 10th anniversary under the leadership of chef/owner Kevin Nashan. He is, of course, a multiple James Beard Award nominee; and he’s been getting a lot of attention of late for his latest project, Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co., just down the street from the cafe. We love the new place, but were worried that perhaps its success might take away from the Sidney Street experience. Turns out we were worried for nothing. The interior of Sidney Street retains that familiar classy, cozy feel we’ve always loved, thanks to the exposed brick and low lights. Nothing better than sitting in the multi-tiered dining room, sipping on some Eagle Rare 17 year bourbon ($22) in the glow of the short scale street lights scattered about. Looking for a romantic setting for a night out with that significant other? You just found it. We started our glorious return with a couple of Appetizer Samplers ($9), featuring a crab cake, lobster turnover and veal dumpling. All of these delicacies were top-notch, but we especially liked the dumpling, which was topped with a sweet teriyaki and honey glaze, and some aromatic cilantro salsa for a truly international taste tour. This small plate selection pairs exceedingly well with a glass of Domaine St. Vincent ($8), a crisp sparkling wine from New Mexico. Appetites primed, we ordered our entrees: the Rabbit ‘Clemenceau’ ($29) and an off-the-menu

selection, Steak Au Poivre ($44). The rabbit dish consists of chunks of tender rabbit, bits of radish, some preserved lemon for bite, pieces of mirliton (a pear-shaped veggie, aka chayote), sausage, earthy black truffles and a creamy mushroom velout sauce. At both times rustic and refined, it runs the gamut of flavors and textures. The steak au poivre is a juicy 8-ounce piece of mid-rare heaven, rosy red and perfectly chewy with a piquant peppery crust. The mild cognac sauce served alongside accentuates the meat without drowning out the flavor, and the mirepoix and creamy mashed potatoes that accompany it are truly classic sides. We went old-school with our wine-pairing for this dish, a glass of Stag’s Leap cabernet sauvignon ($15), which was redolent of dark fruits, earth and tobacco that ably accented this delicious cut. What room we still had after that repaste was filled with a couple of dollops of Coconut Sorbet ($8), a subtly sweet and refreshing way to end the feast. Sidney Street has a dedicated parking lot, a real plus when dealing with narrow, South City streets, as well as valet service. During this visit, service was attentive but unobtrusive, as it always has been when we’ve dropped by in the past. It’s always a fine thing when your memories of a place are exceeded, and in this, Sidney Street Cafe succeeded and then some. Next time it won’t take us so long for a return trip! 2000 Sidney St., 771-5777, sidneystreetcafe.com

GREEN GOURMET OZARK FOREST MUSHROOMS

The ‘Shroom Groomer

S

O WHEN YOU OWN A FARM THAT produces Japanese mushrooms, and the 25th anniversary of your business comes around, what do you think would be an appropriate way to celebrate? Well, Nicola Macpherson, owner of Ozark Forest Mushrooms, knows what to do: She takes a trip to Japan, for “part business, part fun,” to see how the expert mushroom growers do it. “It’s my first trip to Japan; and it’s a dream come true to tour Okuda Mushroom Farm, which is near Osaka,” says Macpherson, who was scheduled to depart shortly after our interview. “I always make this joke: Here I am, this English woman, growing Japanese mushrooms in the Ozarks—I guess sort of that old English-pioneer spirit there—but the Japanese truly are the masters of mushroom production, especially the shiitake, which is what I grow. It’s an honor to visit this farm.” Rewind 25 years ago, before Macpherson and her husband Daniel Hellmuth were married, Ozark Forest Mushrooms really was just a hobby. “We started with six logs,” Macpherson remembers. “And then we got married, and we started growing more mushrooms on more logs.” Their business started off with 100 logs, which soon grew to 1,000 logs, and then 5,000 logs. “And then,” she laughs, “it literally mushroomed into what it is now, about 18,000 logs—on which we grow our main specialty: log-grown shiitake mushrooms.” According to Macpherson, log-grown shiitake mushrooms are much different from those that you find in stores, which are typically grown from saw-dust grounds. “A log-grown shiitake doesn’t have as much water—when you cook up a loggrown shiitake in a pan, you don’t lose half the mushroom to moisture—there’s less stem, and there’s a more oak-type, naturally garlic taste to it,” she says. “And nutritionally, shiitakes grown

BY DIANE ALT

on oak logs are much better for you, too. Shiitakes are thought of as a medicinal mushroom, as they have a lot of immune-boosting properties.” Macpherson grows her mushrooms using organic practices on what was once her husband’s family farm, Timber Farms, The Sinks, which is located in the Big Spring region of the Missouri Ozarks. Also on the property, Beaver Lake Guest House offers overnight accommodations, which include a mushrooms tour. “It turns out that the Ozarks are a perfect location to grow shiitake mushrooms,” Macpherson notes, “because of the forests and the plentiful supply of spring water. Shiitake is a Japanese word, with ‘take’ meaning mushroom and ‘shii’ is a tree in Japan, which is a bit like our oak tree.”

Along with fresh and dried shiitakes, Ozark Forest Mushrooms also produces yellow, gray and brown oyster mushrooms; dried porcini and morel mushrooms; as well as shiitake mushroom soy sauce, a mushroom rub and truffle butter. Along with stands at Tower Grove and Schlafly farmers markets, local retail outlets include Truffles Butchery, Larder & Cupboard, City Greens Market and Local Harvest Grocery. And if you’re thinking that you’ve probably never tasted an Ozark Forest Mushroom, perhaps you should think again, with local restaurants like Cardwell’s at the Plaza, Farmhaus, Niche, Annie Gunn’s, Big Sky, Rooster and Urban Chestnut Brewing Company all sourcing the farm’s products. Regarding the differences among the oysters, Macpherson describes the yellow ones as being more aromatic and delicate, suggesting that they be used in stir-fries and in salads; the gray and brown oyster mushrooms are meatier, sturdier and able to be cooked for longer periods of time. As to her preference—dried versus fresh— she enjoys both, while noting a favorite recipe: Coconut Milk Mushroom Soup (see sidebar), in which either form can be used. “But when you use dried mushrooms, they have a concentrated flavor, which is why they can be so good to use in soups,” she explains. After soaking dried mushrooms, the water used then adds flavor and stock to your soup.” And with morel mushroom season quickly approaching in mid-April, Macpherson offers some guidance to hunters: “Morels like big river bottomlands, and they will grow around certain kinds of trees like elm, apple, and other types of fruit trees—as well as any tree that looks like it’s about to die,” she says with a laugh. “But when hunting morels, you need to know what they look like—you really need to know what you are doing when you go hunting for wild mushrooms.”

SNOW FOUNDATION continued from page 21

operations also has spurred its success, with Bryant’s opportunities to network with a large pool of pro golfers at tournaments around the nation and Pierce’s business savvy. Teaming up is a familiar endeavor for Bryant and Pierce, who often were paired together on their golf team at MICDS. “We were a team within the team,” Pierce says. Bryant, a St. Louis native, went on to play golf at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and is currently a professional golfer. Pierce played golf at Chapman University in California; and after playing golf professionally for a couple of years, is currently attending Saint Louis University School of Law on a part-time basis. Throughout college and the start of their careers, the pair always returned to St. Louis to play in golf tournaments, their love for the game forever tying them together. “The friendship continued to grow, and it was a natural fit to start a company together,” Pierce explains. As for the future of ProUknow, the duo has big plans, from expanding the current pro golfer pool on the crowdfunding site to include amateurs, as well as athletes in any sport, and even high school teams. To promote the company and spread their love of the game, a ProUknow open golf tournament also is in the works for the summer of 2016. “There are people everywhere who want to support a pro golfer,” Pierce says, “and ProUknow makes that easier.”

To date, the Foundation has funded research into Wolfram Syndrome, being led by Dr. Fumihiko Urano at Washington University Medical Center, which is now ready for clinical trials. The research team is pursuing several distinct types of treatments: The first is a pill, already approved by the FDA for other uses, which may help slow the progression of Wolfram Syndrome. It already has been studied in mouse models, with promising results, notes Dr. Saad Naseer, CEO/CMO of the Snow Foundation. “It’s really just a money issue. We’ve already identified the population for clinical trials...Within five years, we have a great potential for having something on the market. I believe that wholeheartedly.” He says about $5- to $7-million must be raised for the clinical trials to move forward. A second type of treatment in the works seeks to help patients regenerate cells that have been destroyed by the disease, which could actually reverse the effects of neurodegeneration, Urano adds— though that treatment will take longer to study

and develop. Because Wolfram Syndrome has similar genetic causes to other forms of diabetes, the impacts of a treatment could affect many more people than the 20,000 with Wolfram Syndrome alone. “If we can find a treatment for Wolfram, we might be able to create a new and effective treatment for diabetes,” Urano says. “The most important thing for us is to provide hope to our patients. Hope really is important, because—I see this in a clinical setting—when patients lose hope, their condition deteriorates. If they know the treatment is coming in six months, then they will do everything they can to live another six months.” To keep hope alive, the Foundation is raising funds for its research at several upcoming events: ‘Shoot to Cure’ clay shooting competition, which will take place on May 9 at Strathalbyn Farms; Run for Wolfram 5K, on May 30, at LaSalle Springs Middle School; and Wolfram Syndrome Day at Busch Stadium on Aug. 17, where Raquel will throw out the first pitch.
