CHILL CLAYTON IS TURNING THREE
April 19, 3:30 P.M. 7610 Wydown, Blvd.
Sarah Crowder Crowder, LN’s staff photographer, is always on the go in some of St. Louis’ most beautiful settings. “Missouri Botanical Garden is my favorite place, and it’s a fun place for kids. I go there at least once a month!”
Beloved Cardinal mascot, Fredbird, will be at Chill Clayton in person giving out a specially designed Chill limited edition baseball helmet ice cream bowl for your favorite frozen yogurt purchase. You won't want to miss all the fun and getting this collector's item for yourself! As part of our third anniversary party we will present our third annual check donation to Friends of Kids with Cancer.

Brittany Nay Nay, one of LN’s staff writers, is originally from Indiana. “I love how there are so many amazing products that are unique to St. Louis. One of my favorites is Hank’s Cheesecakes.”
Lisa Watson Watson, LN’s associate editor, is a St. Louis native. “When I moved to Chicago for school, I felt sorry for my classmates who had never tried gooey butter cake. Needless to say, I fixed that the first chance I got! And when I get the hankering but don’t have time to make my own, I pick one up from McArthur’s Bakery.” Delicious

D
ANCE ST. LOUIS TREATED guests to Big Apple ambiance at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark for The Ballet Ball: I Love New York. The gala was a prelude to two highly anticipated performances at The Fox Theatre by the New York City Ballet. During a festive evening that included cocktails, dinner and dancing, Dance St. Louis honored longtime supporters Barbara Eagleton, and Nancy and Ken Kranzberg with the 2013 Swan Award for their extraordinary contributions to the St. Louis arts and cultural community. Co-chairs for the evening were Rachel Brown and Marie Brauer.

DIANE’S SCOOP Nancy and Ken Kranzberg are excited for their upcoming California trip to see daughter Lily, son-in-law Dave and their 2-year-old grandchild... Rachel Brown’s husband, Travis, has been busy promoting his book, How Money Walks, which describes how Americans continue to move from high-tax states to low-tax states. He has been meeting with several governors throughout the country who are very interested in his research... Susan Barrett is working on a fall fashion exhibit in St. Louis that would involve curators from all over the world. Stay tuned!...Dorte and hubby Jim Probstein are headed to Cozumel, Mexico, with a trip they won at last year’s Jazz at the Bistro gala...Meantime, Michael Uthoff, executive director of Dance St. Louis, is DRIVING to Oaxaca, Mexico, for a month of rest and relaxation. Joining him will be fiancee Flor Hernandez and her daughter, Sara...Comedian Elaine Chelton, who used to work at The Comic Strip in New York City with Jerry Seinfeld, was in attendance. She has always wondered if the ‘Elaine’ character from the show, Seinfeld, was named after her.

Preparing for 21st-Century Careers
Thomas Johnson

W
HETHER YOU’RE USING YOUR WORK computer at a large corporation or just surfing the net on your Smartphone, cybersecurity hazards are lurking in virtually endless corners of technology. Thomas Johnson, AVP for strategic initiatives at Webster University, is working to combat those cyberthreats. Among multiple programs in development at the university, he is leading the implementation of a new graduate degree program in cyberspace systems security, which the school hopes to begin offering this fall. “Cybersecurity is a serious problem, so there are a lot of job opportunities in this growing field,” Johnson notes. The program will include courses on viruses, threat detection and the cyberspace infrastructure for the power grid. “We will teach students about viruses that affect the power grid and ways to protect it,” Johnson says. Other classes will deal with the policies and ethics related to cybercrime, the forensics of cyberspace, and more.
“They will be learning to solve problems that have existed since the Internet started,” Johnson explains. “The net was built with no security. It is this totally unregulated environment. This makes it easy for people to use; and today the whole country relies upon the ability to communicate and pass information over it. It’s a critical infrastructure that has made our country one of the strongest in world; but at the same time, it is our Achilles’ heel because we can be attacked by people using worms and bugs.” Trojans, worms and spear phishing are among the most common cyberthreats, Johnson notes. For example, spear phishing preys on a user responding to a link that connects to what looks like a real website, such as a bank page requesting to check password information. In reality, the website is a fake copy and the user can be taken advantage of by the aggressor. These cyberthreats are extremely costly, especially for corporations—to the tune of about $20

billion—so the security need is great, Johnson says. And it creates a large demand in the job market for students with cyberskills. “We anticipate at least 120,000 vacancies in the corporate and private sectors.” For instance, the U. S. government is estimated to have 20,000 positions for cybersecurity professionals, with the Department of Defense aiming to hire 1,000 in the specialized field. At the same time, Johnson Continued on page 95

Achieving success is one thing in the restaurant business, where new ventures come and go like last week’s news. But achieving success repeatedly is a whole other level. Gerard Craft has wowed the St. Louis dining scene with success after success—Niche, Brasserie, Taste and now, Pastaria—as well as his repeat nominations for the James Beard Foundation Awards ‘Best Chef Midwest.’ Throw in a couple of titles as the LN Platinum List Best Chef; and keep an eye out, because you know more accolades are on their way.

Creve Coeur on Olive
It’s no surprise that this world-class restaurant tops the list in both these categories. Tony’s has racked up so many honors over the past four decades that it simply defines fine dining in St. Louis. Executive chef Vince Bommarito’s signature menu includes lobster albanello, veal loin chop with truffle sauce, filet mignon with Chianti sauce, and an array of seafood dishes plus, of course, pasta dishes galore and decadent desserts. A chef’s tasting menu for two is an outrageous but unforgettable indulgence and, as if it were needed, showy tableside preparation adds flair to the food. But, on those special evenings, the unparalleled service means you’ll barely notice anything but the person across the table. Best Romantic Dining

Best New Hot Spot PASTARIA Expectations were high as St. Louis’ pre-eminent chef and restaurateur Gerard Craft prepared to open Pastaria last year. Pizza aficionados will tell you that Craft spins the best pie in town and you’ll love the risotto balls. “Sorta close to Italy?” Not geographically, perhaps, but most definitely in spirit. IT’S ALL RELATIVE
T
HE SECRET OF BEST Transportation’s success is out: In the past 10 years, sisters and company co-owners Kim Garner and Debbie Rudawsky have built Best into the largest limousine/ party bus/shuttle service company in St. Louis. While their family lineage in the taxi-cab business helped get them off to a strong start, they say they have a ‘secret weapon’ (place tongue into cheek here): a wirehaired, adopted pup named Newman, who makes himself at home in the operations center of Best Transportation’s headquarters in Vinita Park in North St. Louis County. “Newman helps motivate our team, and helps us deal with all the stress of this business,” Garner says. Best Transportation is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year operation, where dispatchers study computer screens that track vehicles with GPS, just like air-traffic controllers look at incoming planes on radar. While Newman always is on patrol, providing moral support wherever he can, the real reason for the Best success story is more likely the sister act itself. Garner and Rudawsky are the ones who make sure the company’s fleet is ready for service. Best has grown to 66 vehicles and 100 employees, and last year grossed $5.3 million. This year, revenue is expected to top the $6-million mark. True, the co-owners can boast t h e i r c o m p a n y ’s impressive numbers, but sometimes—like most sisters—they admit there is a bit of sibling rivalry. “We certainly have our share of battles,” Rudawsky says. Her sister agrees. “It’s just because we are so different,” Garner explains. “I’m the sales and marketing person and she’s the financial one, but it works because our oppositeness actually helps make the business better—we push and pull each other.” Competing in an industry that not long ago was dominated by men, the sisters now see their company’s status as a female-owned business as an advantage, Rudawsky says. “Because of the level of service that a limousine company has to provide, I think it lends itself really well to women running it. You have customers who have great attention to detail, and that’s right in our wheelhouse.” Garner adds, “I have wedding groups with moms and brides who come up to me and say, I use you because you are female-owned, I want to use you.” The sisters gave Best its name because it had to be short enough to easily fit on license plates, just like the ones they saw on the limos that took them
“IT WORKS BECAUSE OUR OPPOSITENESS ACTUALLY HELPS MAKE THE BUSINESS BETTER—WE PUSH AND PULL EACH OTHER.”
Sister Act
Kim Garner and Debbie Rudawsky of Best Transportation
to their senior proms. Garner is a Francis Howell grad, while Rudawsky went to Pattonville. While they say their limousine fleet remains competitive, they’re growing their business in new directions. A few years ago, they added Go Best Express, which is now an official airport shuttle service for Lambert International Airport. And they’ve also moved toward catering to corporate transportation needs. Running an around-the-clock operation adds to the expected stresses of this type of business; and on top of that, it also is an enterprise that requires continuing investments. “We are very big risk-takers,” Garner explains. “When we buy a brand new vehicle, it’s $150,000 to $175,000, but we think we’ve made very smart decisions about when to buy vehicles.” In the past two years alone, the company has spent more than $825,000 on new equipment. The siblings believe the commitments are paying off in more ways than just the bottom line: Best was named the Operator of the Year by Limousine, Charter & Tour magazine, was given the Torch Award by the Better Business Bureau, and has been recognized as one of the top women-owned businesses in the St. Louis area.
Best also was honored by its favorite charity, Make-A-Wish Foundation, with the organization’s prestigious Star Award. The growth and success of Best comes as no surprise to the rest of the family. It was the sisters’ grandfather who founded St. Louis County Cab more than 75 years ago; their father grew the business and added Yellow Cab in more recent decades. Garner says the Best brand is a big part of the family’s ever-growing heritage. “I’m really proud that we are a third-generation business in St. Louis,” she notes. “I wanted to carry on our family business. Our grandfather started it, and our father and our uncle ran County Cab, so we want to keep this going for future generations.” Back in the operation center, dispatchers and drivers have been kept scrambling after a storm moved through St. Louis and cancelled scores of flights at Lambert, changed travel schedules and forced hundreds of last-second adjustments and vehicle re-routing. The sisters keep everything moving in the right direction and take it all pretty much in stride. After all, Newman, their secret weapon, is on the job.

Internet Law

T
he physical and digital worlds are becoming one and the same. The social experience has shifted, and common words like ‘virus’, ‘mouse’ and ‘like’ have double-meanings. And much like our day-to-day reality, the online realm functions in accordance with laws that should be known by all, digital participants or not. While perusing your favorite social media site, imagine you come across a link to a video containing libelous statements about you. If this information is negative enough, you may want to take legal action—like you would if such information was posted in the physical realm. But in cases of Internet law, who is at fault? The social media organization? The person who shared the link? The video-hosting site? Section 230 says nope, nadda and no way, according to Mark Sableman, partner at Thompson Coburn. “It’s very clear why Section 230—or something like it—was needed,” explains Sableman, who taught Internet law at Washington University. “I don’t think the Internet could have functioned well if every intermediary was always in
fear of liabilities arising from the many thousands, if not millions, of postings that flow through its facilities.” Section 230, part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, keeps intermediaries immune in most cases, says Sableman, with exceptions only for intermediaries that provided enough of the questionable content to be considered a fellow author. Instead of taking legal action against YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and others in cases of disparaging posts, Sableman says the original poster or creator of the content is responsible and must be located. And in a digital world of false identities (Sableman notes how many online criminals apparently live in New York—the state that houses the zip code 12345), this isn’t always simple. “Yes, you can trace things down occasionally—but it can be costly and time consuming,” he says. Kirk Stange, partner at Stange Law Firm, points out that libel suits only occur when damages, such as a job loss or a decrease in business, can be proven as a result of the content. “Anybody who’s posting on the Internet ought to be careful,”
advises Stange, who also recommends that people compare the cost in damages to the potential legal costs before having the paperwork drawn. With regulations so forgiving to online intermediaries, how can a person protect their image from untrue information? To those who are most concerned, Sableman recommends consulting with a reputation management organization; these groups work to “bury” the in-question postings to keep them practically hidden online. For the less worried, Sableman recommends searching yourself on the Internet sporadically to Continued on page 95

Divorce and Finances
Paid Advertisement
St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C Divorce can be tricky from a financial standpoint. The issue though is that when it is time to file for divorce, many make decisions based on emotions. While this is understandable, it is not necessarily the right thing to do from a financial perspective. In fact, just rushing through and signing off on paperwork now, can really come back to bite a person in the end. The divorce process can be quite complicated and emotionally draining. For this reason, many people walk into the process with the idea of getting everything finalized as quickly as possible. However, the truth is that -- while it may be hard to deal with -- it is better to take time with the divorce now, than regret the divorce settlement later. In terms of filing for divorce, make sure the filing is not just done as soon as possible. Rather, think about how a filing may affect things. For example, let’s say a husband is a business
56

owner. He plans on expanding that business a year from now. But, does he really want his wife to be able to get half of the expanded business in the divorce? To possibly avoid this, the advice would be to file for divorce right away and wait on the expansion until after the filing. Before a divorce is filed, now is also the time to think about any assets that should be separated. For example, if there is something a husband obtained in life before being married, he may want to keep it in his name and only his name. If it is in both names, while heading into divorce, it may be treated as marital property and divided up accordingly. Of course, these are just two things to consider. In our next article, we’ll look at the importance of remaining truthful in court from a financial perspective and how to deal with retirement accounts.

Talking Points
The What Ifs
T
he fear of public speaking is a fear worth confronting and overcoming because speaking opportunities are business, career and leadership opportunities. My clients’ stories confirm this. I often hear, I’m tired of seeing coworkers who are less qualified than me and don’t contribute as much to the company getting promotions, bonuses and opportunities that I don’t receive. One of the reasons is they are giving presentations, even if the presentations are not that good! Last month’s column talked about why so many people dread giving a presentation. It gave a number of reasons, most that can be overcome fairly easily. We also started discussing the ‘What Ifs,’ including the biggest one of all: What if I have nothing to talk about? My response always is: Each of you have experiences and knowledge people would love to hear and could benefit from. How did I come to that realization? One day, a good friend emailed a question to me. Though I can’t remember the question, I knew the answer. I typed it into the email and hit the ‘reply’ button. Almost immediately, I got a one word response: Wow! What’s wow?, I replied, hitting the ‘send’
button. About 10 minutes later, I received his response, and it’s relevant to this conversation: Sometimes, you’re so close to your own knowledge base, that’s so wide and so deep, you don’t know what you know! Now, think about that statement, You don’t know what you know! Your every day could be somebody’s payday! Your every day could be someone’s a-ha moment. Everyone has a topic to speak about that others will benefit from. Let me tell you a story: I teach a public speaking class two nights a week. The first night, I give an overview of presentation skills. Students give mini-presentations on the second night. Last year, I had a class of inner-city church women, and it was their night to give presentations. They were tremendous! I was really impressed. One person waited until everyone else had
spoken. She stood up, started walking to the front of the room, then stopped and said, “I’ve got nothing to talk about.” She started to sit down. “Wait a minute!” I said. “Before we started class, didn’t I hear you telling some classmates you speak to your kids every day? What do you tell them?” “I tell them to keep away from gangs, don’t do drugs, and work hard,” she replied. “That’s good stuff!” I said. “How many children do you have?” She said six, to which I replied, “Wow, big family! What are those kids doing now?” After a pause, she answered, “Well, four are in college. . .” “Stop right there! Four of your children are in Continued on page 95

Ready for the Next Round the long-term commitment of co-chairs Ron Kruszewski, Michael Neidorff, Joe Imbs and Kevin Demoff. “Our co-chairs have helped make this event one of the most successful charity tournaments in the St. Louis area,” Meath says. “Their leadership for the event has elevated the Arc’s presence in the community, resulting in additional funding that has fueled the growth of our programs over the last several years.” Those programs, which recently expanded through the Arc’s merger with Belle Children’s Services, include comprehensive support for those with developmental disabilities, as well as their families. “What makes Arc unique is, although we serve more than 3,500 kids and adults each year, we still retain such a family focus,” Meath explains. More than 1,100 volunteers help with the nonprofit’s programs, which include support throughout the clients’ lifespans—from outreach therapy and educational support to family, leisure, employment and residential services. Meath says she sees the impact the organization is making in families’ lives each day. “We have families who tell us what a difference we have made, not just for their son or daughter, but also in their

Area Country Club Closes The Country Club at the Legends in Eureka closed in late January; however, the owners are looking for a buyer who can operate it, as well. The private club, which features 27 holes, has numerous amenities, including a dining area and
chef, rooms for special events, a pro shop and a swimming pool. Scott Langley News St. Louis native Scott Langley enjoyed a solid debut on the PGA Tour. Langley, a Parkway South and University of Illinois graduate, earned a spot on the tour this year after going through the Q School qualifying late last year. In the season-opening Sony Open in Hawaii, Langley posted the tournament’s low round on the first day with an 8-under, 62. He made consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 in his final round to work his way into a tie for third with Charles Howell III. Langley, who now lives in Jupiter, Fla., won $324,000 in the Sony Open. Since then, he made the cut in the AT&T Pebble Beach and finished in a tie for 62nd place. Through the first week of March, he also got into three tournaments but failed to make the cut. Langley captured the 2008 and 2009 Metropolitan Open as an amateur, and the 2010 Metropolitan Match Play Championship, where he defeated Skip Berkmeyer in a classic final match.

With the 2014 Curtis Cup, the club will be hosting its sixth USGA Championship. It previously hosted the 1921 and 1960 U.S. Amateur, the 1925 and 1972 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 1947 U.S. Open. USGA news The United States Golf Association has two new championships, the first national championships to be added to the USGA’s competition roster in more than 25 years. The addition of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship reflects the USGA’s continued commitment to supporting and growing amateur competition well into the future. The matches will be played annually between mid-March and late May, with the inaugural events scheduled for 2015. “We couldn’t be more excited about the creation of national four-ball championships, given the popularity and enjoyment of this competitive format at the amateur level,” says USGA VP and Championship Committee chair

Bellerive Country Club •Ranked as the No. 2 golf venue in Missouri by Golf Digest. •Host to the upcoming 74th PGA Championship in May, which will make Bellerive C.C. only the third club to ever host the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship, U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open. •Scheduled to host the 100th PGA Championship in August 2018. •“The greatness of these events is seen through PGA Reach,” says Mike Tucker, Bellerive’s PGA head golf professional of the philanthropic aspect of the championships. The organization works to assist young people through goals such as decreasing the number of dropout students.
The Country Club of St. Albans •Home to two courses, both of which are ranked among the top 10 in Missouri by Golf Digest. • T h e Ta v e r n C r e e k course, ranked no. 7 in Missouri by Golf Digest, encompasses 160 acres and was designed to showcase the landscape. •“These two courses are set up to challenge seasoned and casual golfers,” says Tom O’Toole, Jr., United States Golf Association VP. “This ranking for The Country Club of St. Albans is welldeserved as these courses are two gems for the St. Louis region.”
Boone Valley Golf Club •Ranked as the No. 1 golf venue in Missouri by Golf Digest, a title it first earned in 2011 and has since retained. •“Golf Digest panelists evaluate courses on seven criteria, from Shot Values to Conditioning. Boone Valley continues to get very good scores from our panelists in all these categories. It’s been among Missouri’s top 10 courses since 1995 and reached the No. 1 spot for the first time in 2011,” says Golf Digest senior editor Pete Finch. •Host to five charity events in 2012, including the March of Dimes Real Golf Challenge and the Sports Commission Golf Classic for St. Louis Youth, both of which will be held again in May of this year.

The Top of the Rock Golf Course will bring a new level of aesthetic appeal to Missouri’s golf scene. Sitting atop a cliff, the course, located just outside of Branson, is the latest from Bass Pro Shop’s Johnny Morris and was designed by some of the game’s legends to create an experience like no other. The nine-hole course was designed by Jack Nicklaus; the practice area by Arnold Palmer; and a 1-acre putting course by Tom Watson. Sure to be a hole-in-one, Top of the Rock Golf Course is set to open in 2014.

ROTATOR CUFF TEARS
Shoulder Stress
A
MONG THE MOST COMMON ORTHOPEdic injuries, rotator cuff tears cause shoulder pain and temporary disability for millions of people each year. And while we associate rotator cuff injuries with baseball pitchers who are constantly putting strain on the shoulder, this problem is most often diagnosed in adults age 60 and older. “Only about 8 to 10 percent of rotator cuff tears actually are caused by a traumatic event such as lifting overhead, falling, etc. In actuality, rotator cuff tears occur in the general population due to tendon degeneration caused by a multitude of factors,” says Dr. Jason Young, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with Orthopedic Associates. The rotator cuff is composed of muscles and tendons that provide stability and facilitate movement in the shoulder. “The shoulder joint is more reliant on these muscles to function than many other joints because it’s a ball-and-socket joint with a very shallow socket, as compared to the hip, for example,” explains Dr. Scott Kaar, a SLUCare orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. “Over time, everyone gets wear and tear of the rotator cuff. It begins with inflammation or tendonitis, and progresses DR. SCOTT KAAR, SLUCare to ro t a to r c u f f orthopedic surgeon partial tears and eventually full-thickness tears over many years.” Many people have asymptomatic rotator cuff injuries that heal with time. However, more serious tears cause an aching pain in the shoulder and upper back that is made worse if the patient tries to elevate his or her arm. Many patients complain that the pain keeps them awake at night. Because symptoms may mimic other types of shoulder injuries, a physical exam is needed to diagnose rotator cuff injuries. “Rotator cuff tears are not always a problem for patients. In fact, one study found that about 17 percent of asymptomatic people had rotator cuff tears found on imaging,” says Dr. Miho Tanaka, a Mercy orthopedic surgeon and associate team

physician for the St. Louis Cardinals. Whether symptoms occur may have to do with inflammation and weakness of the surrounding muscles. Many people are able to compensate with other muscles and have almost full function and no pain despite the tear, she adds. “For the most common tear types (non-traumatic tears that worsen over time), the goal of treatment is to treat the symptoms of pain and stiffness,” Kaar says. “If this can be achieved successfully with physical therapy exercises, cortisone injections, icing and medications, then that’s great. If those nonsurgical options don’t work or stop working, then surgery becomes the next option.” Rotator cuff surgery may be performed with
an arthroscope, leaving only a tiny incision and speeding recovery. “There are theoretical advantages—less chance of infection and less muscle damage—with arthroscopic repair, though that hasn’t really been documented in the research, so we can’t say for sure if that’s the case or not,” Kaar notes. Recovery involves keeping the arm in a sling for four to eight weeks followed by physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles and regain range of motion. “Rotator cuff pain is very common in the general population, especially as the workforce ages,” Young notes. “If you experience pain with overhead work, weakness and night pain, it’s important to be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon for further management.”

T
HE HUMBLE KNEE IS A TRUE ORTHOPEDIC WORKHORSE. With its combination of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid, it carries us through life—until something goes wrong. “Many knee injuries are caused by fairly minor traumatic events,” says Dr. Jerome Piontek, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Knee pain without a specific injury often develops as a result of wear and tear or many minor injuries over time.” The repetitive movement of the knee through the years is enough to wear down cartilage as we age, causing pain and affecting mobility. For people who are overweight or obese, the knees bear a greater load and are at risk of breaking down sooner. However, anyone can injure a knee regardless of age, gender or activity level. “The most common injuries are either to the bone, which are pretty rare, or injury to the soft tissues,” says Dr. Fallon Maylack, an orthopedic surgeon with SSM Orthopedics. “Ligament sprains are commonly caused by twisting or falling. We see bruises or fractures when kids fall off jungle gyms or bicycles.” One of the most common sports-related injuries is a tear in the main, stabilizing knee ligament, known as the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. Maylack advises seeking medical attention after a knee injury if there is significant swelling, pain when bearing weight, or pain caused by movement that doesn’t improve after a day or two. Diagnosis often involves both external assessment and taking images of bone and soft tissues. “I always start with obtaining a full history about the injury—things like recall of the incident itself, whether the swelling occurred immediately after the event, whether the patient was able to complete the task or sporting activity, etc.,” says Dr. Adnan Cutuk, a SLUCare orthopedic surgeon. “Following a full history, I complete the knee examination and obtain an X-ray. If I suspect ligament and cartilage injury, then I obtain an MRI of the knee to gather further information.” Treatment is highly individualized. “Even two of the same type of injury in two different patients could be treated differently, since I always consider their individual expectations, activity level, age, history of their condition, etc.,” Cutuk says. For example, a physically active patient who injures his knee while skiing or playing a recreational sport requires a different treatment approach than someone with the same type of injury who is primarily sedentary and overweight. Many injuries simply need time to heal. Resting and elevating the knee, using ice to control swelling, and wrapping the knee in a compression bandage or brace are initial treatments. Surgery is needed to repair more serious injuries, and physical therapy is an important part of surgical recovery. Continued on page 95

DIVERSIONS CONVERTIBLES
Wind in Your Hair
I
DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I’M READY for some higher temps and warm sunshine. Of course, the best way to enjoy all spring has to offer is in a convertible automobile. Convertibles come in all shapes, sizes and prices these days, with attractive options for just about anyone seeking some open-air fun. For petrol heads looking for unabashed performance with their tanning machines, the Nissan 370Z Roadster offers incredible looks and performance for just a little more than $40,000. For starters, the 370Z offers styling borrowed from the 260 and 280Z’s of the ’80s, but beautifully updated to a sleek, modern-looking sports car. The roofline of the coupe is gorgeous, and the convertible retains most of its styling beauty with the added advantage of wind-in-the-hair motoring. The fully automatic top with glass rear window and defogger raises and lowers in about 20 seconds at the touch of a button in what can best be described as a mechanical ballet. With the soft top up, the cabin is nice and comfortable, with minimal wind noise or intrusion. With it down, it’s full-blown topless motoring fun. The interior is a no-nonsense two-place cockpit that places its emphasis on function. Though it has the performance of a Porsche, it doesn’t have the interior of one. The leather on the heated seats is nice, but the other interior materials are pretty plebeian, which is perfect in my book; I’d rather have my money spent on performance than luxury. This is a purpose-built vehicle. Automatic temperature control is three-rotary-knob simple, and the sound system isv equally as easy to use—a refreshing throwback eschewed by too many modern vehicles, which think we need yet another video screen in our lives. Trunk room is sports-car tight, though they claim you can fit a golf bag in the trunk (maybe if you play miniature golf). This purposeful interior serves as an inviting office for those who take driving seriously. Snuggled in the very well-bolstered sport seat, you can adjust the steering wheel and have the prominent center tach and other gauges above it adjust with it for maximum visibility. Press the start engine button and the powerful 3.7-liter V-6 spits out a sonorous growling exhaust note that hints at the power beneath the hood. Slip it into gear and press the skinny pedal on the right, and you take off like a bullet as 332 horses claw their way to the tarmac through the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox. The steering is tight and precise, the braking good, and the taught suspension allows you to carve through curves like you’re BY ROBERT PASTER

Bentley Continental GTC
on rails. Mileage is even a decent 18 city, 25 highway. This is pure sports car driving fun. In warm weather with the top down, it doesn’t get much better for those of us who enjoy performance driving. According to Steve Colesworthy, general sales manager at Bommarito Nissan, “The Z Roadster has one of the most rigid body structures of any convertible. It was designed as a convertible, so body integrity was maximized, which translates to ultimate performance.” Prices for the 370Z Roadster with automatic start at approximately $42,000—a tremendous bargain for the Z’s stellar performance and top-down fun. Another fantastic convertible is the Bentley Continental GTC. The GTC comes pretty close to being everything one could want in an automobile. First, it absolutely is gorgeous. The Bentley stylists hit a home run when they designed the Continental, with flowing fender lines, a gorgeous front fascia and a beautiful rear end; and the GTC retains all but the coupe’s fastback roof line, but in exchange, you get the joy of open-air motoring. The interior of the GTC is pure unadulterated luxury, with the finest wood and leather trim produced by true Old World craftsmen (whom I got to observe on my recent tour of the Bentley factory). Everything that looks metal is metal— not plastic—and well-bolstered heated and cooled seats are armchair-comfortable. Back-seat room is a bit tight, and leg room is largely dependent on the generosity of the front-seat passengers. The power opening trunk is surprisingly big for a convertible, even with the top down. The dual automatic climate controls are easy to use, and the large dash screen for the back-up camera and radio and navigation controls is a user-friendly
“SLIP IT INTO GEAR AND PRESS THE SKINNY PEDAL ON THE RIGHT, AND YOU TAKE OFF LIKE A BULLET.” Nissan 370Z Roadster
touch screen. Raising and lowering the top is as easy as pressing one button for about 20 seconds. With the top raised, the four-layer top with glass window provides a snug and comfortable environment. With it down, it’s sun-in-the-face, windin-the-hair bliss. The seat even has an ‘air scarf’ to blow warm air on the back of your neck to keep you warm. A new option for the GTC is a 4.0-litre, twin turbo, 500-horsepower V-8 engine (instead of the 6.0-litre, 567-horsepower W-12). The W-12’s engine is almost overwhelming, while the V-8 offers more power than most drivers could ever use; and thanks to its lighter weight, the V-8’s performance is not that much less than the W-12’s. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, the V-8 delivers an impressive 14 mpg city, 24 highway. Not bad for a car that goes zero to 60 in about 4.7 seconds and weighs 5,400 pounds. With power going to all four wheels and excellent balance, the Bentley handles like a much smaller car. Ephraim Schmitt, manager at Bentley St. Louis says, “The Bentley Continental GTC is the best allaround car you can buy. It does everything extremely well, from quality to luxury to performance.” Of course, they’re not going to give away the best all-around car on the market, but for around $200,000, the GTC is an amazing car that delivers on every aspect a motoring enthusiast could desire.

unreliable and second-hand gossip from around the world* TAYLOR SWIFT
The pop star and boyfriend mill was on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter last week, posing with her stylist for the magazine’s feature on the 25 best stylists in the entertainment biz. Swifty looked stunning in a yellow gown and metallic stilettos—just lovely. Don’t hold your breath for the issue on the 25 best parents and/or life coaches, however.
ADAM SANDLER AND DREW BARRYMORE The wildly successful rom-com stars of The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates are reuniting in hopes of a trifecta. This time, the pair will star as divorced singles who go on a disastrous first date, only to later find themselves stranded together at a resort with their kids. Think what you want, but I saw Jack & Jill—Sandler’s got nowhere to go but up.
Debbie Baldwin
MILEY CYRUS AND LIAM HEMSWORTH The fading pop star and the Australian hunk have apparently called it quits. After months of speculation, the official announcement came last week. Wow, a misguided child star who is surely soon to be the subject of an E! True Hollywood Story and a handsome and talented actor on the verge of becoming an A-list movie star breaking off their engagement…I never would have seen that coming.
JERSEY SHORE The group has some good news for a change: The cast is reuniting this week for what MTV is dubbing as “an alternative spring break.” Rather than drinking, fighting and having unprotected sex, cast members are going to work with college volunteers to help rebuild devastated communities along the New Jersey Shore. I mean, to be fair, the cast did most of the damage so it may be court-ordered…

TANGENTIAL THINKER
W
ELL, WE’RE ALMOST OUT OF THE woods. We made it through the January bilge and a February with nothing but Oscar re-releases that were worth seeing. Spring break is almost over, and the studios know that the time has come to start releasing some movies that people actually will pay to see. Here’s what we have (hopefully) to look forward to this spring: The Place Beyond the Pines (March 29) Ryan Gosling stars as a traveling daredevil who discovers, upon returning to his hometown, that his former love (Eva Mendes) has given birth to his son. He settles down in hopes of creating a stable family life. All that changes when he gets recruited into a crime ring, and is relentlessly pursued by an aggressive rookie policeman (Bradley Cooper). The Host (March 29) I wouldn’t bother including this alien invasion love story based on a book by Twilight author Stephenie Meyers, but for the fact that it stars Saoirse Ronan (Atonement). She is incredibly talented and always chooses interesting and original projects. Here her body gets occupied by an alien host and together they go in search of her
lost love. Ok, so maybe this time she just wanted to make beach house money, we’ll have to wait and see. Evil Dead (April 5) This remake or reboot or re-imagining—whatever Hollywood’s word du jour is—boasts that it is “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.” I fear they are right, but for very different reasons than they are touting… The Company You Keep (April 5) Robert Redford returns to the big screen here, playing an attorney living a quiet life in upstate New York. His world is turned upside down when a reporter (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his radical criminal past as a violent anti-war protester. 42 (April 12) Frankly, I’m surprised they aren’t holding this Jackie Robinson biopic for a more Oscar-friendly autumn release. The film documents the first African American major league baseball player’s harrowing and heroic journey. Oblivion (April 19) Tom Cruise, alien invasion, intergalactic battle, mankind’s future hanging in the balance. I felt obligated to mention it. The Numbers Station (April 26) If you’ve been hoping for a good spy thriller, your wait may be over. Here, John Cusack plays a veteran CIA agent assigned to the seemingly uncomplicated task of protecting a menial code operator at a remote location. If you guessed all is not as it seems, give yourself a gold star.

The Call
War Horse
RATING: 6 out of 10
Once again I find myself on the horns of a dilemma: We have an Academy Awardwinning actress at the helm, a fairly original premise and a suspenseful plot. Yet somehow, the movie just misses the mark. It hits the dartboard, but not the bull’s eye. Jordan Turner (Halle Berry) is a 911 responder working in Los Angeles. When she makes a crucial mistake talking to a victim of a home invasion, she is hopelessly scarred. Months later, when a young girl, Casey (Abigail Breslin), is abducted from a shopping mall, Jordan once again gets a call for help from an untraceable disposable cell phone Casey has in the trunk of the man’s car. It’s up to Jordan to use the clues Casey provides to find her and save her before she becomes a serial killer’s next victim. I liked this movie. It’s smart, suspenseful and incredibly wellacted. Yes, it’s as predictable as a Gilligan’s Island episode, but even that didn’t really bother me. I think the biggest problem with the film is that it wants to be The Silence of the Lambs and it just is not. At best, I would say it’s a good stormy-night rental.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone THE MAGIC IS GONE
RATING: 5 out of 10
I don’t know what to tell you. This movie stars some of the greatest comic actors working today. It has a clever, timely premise and some very funny dialogue. Yet, all I can do is picture a half-dozen studio executives and screenwriters sitting in some dive bar in West Hollywood saying to themselves, How did it all go so terribly wrong? Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) are the kings of magic. With their sequined velvet jumpsuits and jaw-dropping illusions, they fill their audience with shock and awe. I would say imagine Siegfried and Roy, but I’m sure you’re already there. That is, until their audience starts to dwindle—drawn instead to a new breed of magician. The crowds are now drawn to the edgy, sexy magic of Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), a rogue street magician with a dangerous repertoire. I would say picture Criss Angel, but I’m sure you’re already there. Can the old-school magicians update their style? Is this new breed of performer the future of magic? Can Burt and Anton save their career, as well as their friendship? Does anybody really care? Judging from the box office reports, the answer is no. It’s a pretty funny movie. Correction: It’s a pretty funny movie that I couldn’t care less about. It’s striving to be a theme cult classic like Anchorman or Talladega Nights, and falls miserably short. BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

STORY
PLAY: War Horse
Ted Narracott, the town drunk in Devon, England, puts up his rent money in order to outbid his well-to-do brother, Arthur, at a local auction for a foal whom he brings home to his wife Rose and son Albert. Rose is distraught over her husband’s reckless spending spree, but Albert is delighted. He quickly names the foal Joey, and goes about caring for him daily.
GROUP: Touring Company
Joey is high-spirited and not suited to farm labor, so when Ted makes another foolish wager with his brother (that Joey be taught to plow or he will be given to Arthur for his son, Billy), Rose and Albert are disconsolate. With just one week to train him, Albert relies on his bond with Joey to convince the horse to accept a harness and, miraculously, plow a small bit of land in order for Ted to win the bet.
VENUE: Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand Blvd. DATES: Through March 24 TICKETS: $15$66; 534-1111 or metrotix.com
RATING: A 5 on Eventually, though, Ted does sell Joey, who ends up mounted and a scale of 1-to-5. fighting in the ranks of English troops on the European continent in World War I. Albert lies about his age in order to join the military in an attempt to find Joey, as they and others endure tragedies and hardships throughout the long and brutal duration of ‘The Great War.’
HIGHLIGHTS Writing an anti-war story is unsurprising; After all, how often are you going to come across a pro-war tale? What makes War Horse so endearing and affecting is that war is the secondary thread in this yarn behind the emotional and deep-felt bond between a lad and the animal he loves. Anyone who has ever considered a pet to be a member of the family rather than a possession will understand this. Watching the puppeteers manipulate Joey’s 120-pound frame, moving his ears and tail and mouth with impeccable timing to match the sound design, is quite remarkable. It’s certainly reminiscent of The Lion King, but it has a majesty all its own as the 10-foot-long, 8-foot-tall Joey is maneuvered with the smoothest dexterity. The cast includes strong performances by Alex Morf as the dedicated Albert; Mat Hostetler as his wastrel father, Ted; Angela Reed as his loving mother, Rose; Brian Keane as Uncle Arthur; and Michael Wyatt Cox as cousin Billy. War Horse seamlessly weaves two tales into one in sketching an indelible portrait of love and loyalty between the human Albert and his valiant, four-legged friend. BY MARK BRETZ

AU BISTRO SEEMS TO BE KIND OF the ‘middle kid’ of The Chase Park Plaza’s lineup of restaurants. More formal than Chaser’s Lounge or the somewhat casual fare at Cafe Eau, but not quite the white-tablecloth experience that is The Tenderloin Room, Eau Bistro could easily be overlooked by prospective diners, but that would be a shame because the atmosphere and food are well worth a look—and a taste. Last year, The Chase brought on executive chef Kyle Lipetzky and his chef de cuisine, Jason Paterno, from The Phoenician Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz., to revamp the menu; and the duo has worked to bring a focus on local and house-made ingredients and quality seafood, with impressive results. We started with the Small Plates. The first dish up was the Little Gem ($9), a tasty salad featuring roasted shallot cream, pecorino fritter, white anchovy and a delicate quail egg. The Arancini ($11) was a delicious companion piece, crispy battered balls of rice with black truffle, mozzarella and thyme. Both small-plate offerings were modest in size, and served to stimulate the appetite and not dull it. In an effort to check out the new direction, we sampled the restaurant’s house-made pastas with an order of the Gnocchi ($17); and then delved into the chefs’ seafood specialization with an order of the Branzino Sea Bass ($28). Destination Desserts, a new gourmet bakery with a social conscience, has begun operations in Maryland Heights in the Center for Head Injury Services at 11786 Westline Industrial Drive. The bakery is designed to train, employ and advance the lives of people with head injuries and other cognitive learning conditions. Proceeds will go to support the center. Look for a Destination Desserts food truck to hit the streets sometime next month. Visit destinationdesserts.org to learn more. a classic combo of tender dumplings served in a mild bolognese sauce with mozzarella and a judicious touch of chili and basil—a simple, rustic dish that really showed off each of its components. The sea bass was beautifully presented, topped with a thatch of green apple spears and resting atop a bed of beluga lentils and braised endive. The fish itself had nice, crusty edges; and while it had a fairly oily consistency, the taste was mild and delicate, the texture just a bit flaky under the fork. For dessert, we went with the Spicy Chocolate & Mango ($9), a bit of chocolate sponge, chocolate cremeux, coca nib and a tad of curried almond, topped with a dollop of mango sorbet. It had just the right amount of sweetness to clear the palate without overwhelming it. For those who enjoy a bit of a culinary adventure, the restaurant has a chef’s table option that changes regularly, and there was a hefty wine list of more than 300 bottles that would satisfy the pickiest oenophile. Early-morning diners also have a pretty hearty breakfast menu to choose from at Eau Bistro, a nice change from the graband-go choices available in the surrounding neighborhood. As far as ambiance, Eau Bistro was inviting for the casual and more formal diner alike. Hopefully, it will rise above the radar and attain the status of the go-to dining destination it deserves. Cheers to Spring!
T
HE WEATHER TEASES US. SUNSHINE AND splendor one day, and back to chilly grayness and wicked winds the next. It’s a sure sign that spring is here, and with that touch of spring fever, my thirst for warm-weather wines is growing. We all have our stand-by favorites: sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, riesling or chardonnay. But spring is a great time to try new white wines from different regions, countries and varietals. Many of the ‘new’ wines in the U.S. market have been around for many years in other countries and are just now being exported and introduced to the American palate. Warmer weather invites us to enjoy lighter wines that have slightly less alcohol, and are not as heady or as overpowering as some red counterparts. The world of white wines is vast, so where to start? Take what you would normally drink; for instance, sauvignon blanc from California, and try that varietal from other parts of the world. In Loire Valley, France, sauvignon blanc is racy and

bright with high acidity. In Bordeaux, it is clean and crisp, or can be more rounded with a splash of semillon grape. Try a bottle from New Zealand if you’re looking for something bright and racy with grapefruit; or try a Chilean sauvignon blanc for a bright wine with clean herbal notes. Let’s explore other white varietals: Gruner Veltliner (Austria): Bright and crisp with good acidity; a great alternative to sauvignon blanc. Good any time of the year. Pinot Bianco/Blanc (Alsace, France; Italy; and California): It’s pinot grigio on steroids— bigger and rounder with more fruit. Chenin Blanc (Loire Valley, France): Mineral meets viscose and fruit for balance. Muscadet (Loire Valley, France): Think light with mineral notes and no oak. The same fruit matches well with shellfish and is classic with oysters. Much-improved muscadets now are available in the St. Louis market. Marsanne (Rhône, France): Baby chardonnay? Beware, this one can be big and over-the-top just like chardonnay. Roussanne (Rhône, France): A little cleaner than its sister, Marsanne, but it can be hard to split them up, as they make a great pair/blend. Grenache Blanc (Rhône, France): Made by itself or blended, a bottle can be crisper and austere, or full and rich, depending on the winemaker’s style. Picpoul (Languedoc, France): Just recently (in the last five years) have we seen this grape/wine
imported to St. Louis. A great summer-sipper, it has both acidity and fruit, and usually no oak for a clean, easy-drinking wine. Arneis (Piedmont, Italy): A white flower bouquet with an elegant finish. You can find a few good ones in the St. Louis market. Torrentes (Argentina): Beautiful scents, like perfume, but some can be excessive. Ask your local wine store for a good, balanced one. Albariño (Rias Baixas, Spain): This has gained good exposure in the U.S. Look for some peach and mineral notes for a refreshing wine. Verdejo (Rueda, Spain): Clean, with mineral and earth notes—a great sipper. Viognier (Rhone, France): The grape also is grown in many countries. This is a fruit bomb— lush, full and aromatic. These are just some of the unique varietals now more readily available in St. Louis. So, as you get ready for sipping al fresco, think about trying something new. Tasting Tip: Acidity—White summer wine can be high in acidity. How can you gauge the acidity level? When tasting the wine, see how quickly your mouth salivates. The quicker you salivate, the higher the acidity. Your mouth has a natural pH level, which it wants to correct. Wine Recommendation: Pick your favorite varietal and taste its counterpart from other wine regions around the world. Then, venture further and try some of the varietals that you haven’t had before. Experiment and enjoy!

What’s Pouring This Spring?
S
pring has sprung, and that means that area wineries are—or soon will be—pouring their latest bounty for everyone to enjoy. We touched base with five of the most popular wineries around to see what they have in store for fans of the grape this season. “Our 2012 whites are just fabulous across the board,” according to Chuck Dressel of Mount Pleasant Winery in Augusta. “I’ve never had wines with

this much flavor and aroma.” While the latest drought was hard on many crops, Dressel says it helped produce some fine grapes and consequently, some exceptional wines. He says Mount Pleasant’s 2012 Vignoles is a great dramatic wine, due out in midto late-April, while the 2010 Villagio, a white blend in a pinot-grigio style, should prove to be a big winner, as well. Crisp, dry and very fruitforward, it should be out by Memorial Day. Dressel says the winery’s tawny port, which has garnered quite the
cult following, also will be back in circulation come April. Another popular wine that hasn’t been available for a bit is the 2012 Dry Vignoles from Nobleis Vineyards, also in Augusta. Owner Bob Nolan says the wine, which sold out last September after a summer release, will hit stores again at the end of April. He says vignoles tend to be more of a semi-sweet style, but this expression has no added sweetness. It’s sourced completely from Nobleis’ estate vineyards.

Newberry Marian Nunn Vida Goldman Prince Chuck Gillentine, chief executive of Chandler Hill Vineyards in Defiance, has two new nortons, a non-vintage offering and a 2012 that he says “will blow people away. It’s unlike any norton I’ve tried.” Chandler Hill also will have a big and juicy 2012 Chamborcin and a 2012 Vignoles available this spring, as well as its 2011 Chamborcin. But oenophiles need to act fast when that wine debuts: Gillentine says there will be just 48 cases available. Speaking of nortons, Randy Hamann, co-owner of Weingarten Vineyard in Ste. Genevieve, is planning on presenting an exceptional 2010 Norton, as well as a 2010 Chardonelle, to the public this spring. Both wines will have done time in Missouri oak barrels. S o m e t i m e s, ro s é s don’t get the attention they deserve, but Hank Johnson, owner CHUCK DRESSEL, of Chaumette Winery Mount Pleasant & Vi n eya rd s i n S te . Winery Genevieve, aims to change that. The winery will be uncorking another of its popular dry rosés this spring, and Johnson says, “we think this is the best yet.” The wine, made with chamborcin grapes, is great for sipping solo on the patio on a warm spring day and is also a good bridge between white and red wines. It pairs well with hearty fish or fowl, as well as lighter beef dishes, lamb and pork. Chaumette also will be bowing two vignoles for the season, one dry and one semi-dry.

Webster University continued from page 19 continues, the number of students studying computer science is dropping—from 60,000 in 2004 to 39,000 in 2010. So Webster University hopes to help swing that number in a positive direction with its new program. Additional degrees in the works include national security and digital forensics. “These initiatives enable us to focus on systems engineering as an emerging area of study at Webster,” Johnson says. “We’re just really excited and grateful for a faculty that is developing programs to help keep our nation’s computers secure.”

Internet Law continued from page 56 look for negative content. Should you find it, deal with it immediately. While these intermediary websites are not legally required to act, according to Sableman, Section 230 does note that sites may act as a ‘Good Samaritan’ by removing or blocking inappropriate content without fear of legal retaliation—meaning, if there is disparaging content about you, the first step is to ask that it be removed. “I’ve found that by acting promptly, you can often get a responsible intermediary to take things down. And if that happens promptly, then it’s not picked up by search engines, and put into caches, picked up by bloggers and linked to elsewhere.” While libel is a large aspect of Internet law, specifics in marketing regulations should be of key interest to those involved in business, Stange says. “You’ve got all these search engines out there, and you have got to make sure that the advertising that you do is in conformity with the policies that those search engines have set forth.”
Talking Points continued from page 57 college?” I asked. “I’ll bet there are children in your neighborhood who don’t even make it to high school. You have four kids in college, and you told this class you don’t have anything to talk about? We’ve got to hear how you did that!” The entire class responded the way I did. This story is not unique. It happens all the time with coaching clients. One of the best ways to find ‘what to talk about’ is to work with at least one other person. When working with clients, I listen and ask questions so they hear themselves. You can do the same when working with others to discover what to talk about. Ask questions like: What did you learn from that? What happened next? What will you do differently the next time that happens? Why would anyone want to hear that story? From now on, there should be no more ‘nothing to talk about.’ In next month’s column, we’ll start looking at ‘Nuggets to Lessen the Fear of Public Speaking.’ ‘ T i l t h e n , m a ke yo u r n ex t p re se n ta t i o n No Swea t ! Questions? Visit NoSweatPublicSpeaking.com or email me at Fred@NoSweatPublicSpeaking.com.
Knee Injuries continued from page 74 Knee injury prevention involves maintaining strength and flexibility through physical activity, as well as maintaining a healthy weight so that the knees are not unduly stressed. “Also, ‘playing to your level’ remains my personal favorite (prevention strategy),” Cutuk says. “When taking on the new sporting activity, one must recognize his or her limitations and play to his own level or ability. For example, skiing a black diamond run after not skiing for several years and without warming up increases your risk of injury, as does playing in a soccer league that tends to be significantly more competitive then one’s individual commitment to the sport.” Maylack sums up, “It really comes down to common sense, being careful and using your head. Follow your mother’s advice, and just don’t do anything too silly.”
