What background do you have with arts and crafts (see our Arts & Culture feature)? ALICE HANDELMAN I’ve enjoyed a deep appreciation for craft for many years and enjoy supporting local craftsmen at Craft Alliance. Collecting ceramic and glass objects connects me to the makers’ visions and brings beauty into our home.
DENISE KRUSE I can complete anything that is no-sew/minimal construction knowledge – the most complex tools I can safely use without leaving a blood streak on the wall (it’s happened) are a hot glue gun and paintbrush.
CONNIE MITCHELL I am not a crafty person, but I recently took up knitting.

from the
Editor Several years ago, I volunteered at a camp that taught rebellious kids teamwork through hands-on problem-solving exercises. The first exercise was a difficult one: The children didn’t want to talk to one another, they were pushy (literally) and all they wanted to do was give up and go home. About 30 minutes into the first exercise, the kids realized we wouldn’t let them quit. That’s when things changed, and the kids started communicating with one another. They started working together. They started respecting one another. By the time the kids completed the activity, every participant’s face lit up with a smile. By the end of the week, it was as if we were working with a completely different group of kids. In this week’s edition, Ladue News contributor Alice Handelman explores Camp Jump Start, where children learn healthy habits. One camper, a 15-year-old girl named Teegan, shares that the camp not only taught her how to live a healthier lifestyle, but also imbued her with confidence and self-worth. Teegan’s positive experience at Camp Jump Start made me stop in my tracks: No child should question his or her self-worth. That must have been an incredible and life-changing moment for her, and one that perfectly illustrates the importance of Camp Jump Start. I hope that this story touches you as much as it did me and that you’re also moved by the camp’s inspiring work and the impact it has in the lives of young people. All the best,

n the middle of the night, a woman flees her home, children in tow, to escape the abusive environment she has found her family in. Their escape requires a fast getaway – clothes are left behind, and only essentials come with. It’s a familiar story, heard all too often. Assistance League strives to make the difference in these harrowing moments through Project ROSE (Raise Our Self-Esteem), a collective effort to deliver clothing and household items to women who find themselves in this situation and living in shelters. Project ROSE will receive funding from the upcoming Authors Brunch. In its 11th year, the Authors Brunch showcases two talents, one local and one national. Jane Harbron, president of Assistance League, shares what to look forward to this year. “Ruth Riechl is our national author. She’ll talk about the uncertain future she faced
BRUNCH
as the last editor [-in-chief] of Gourmet magazine. [Her] gourmet cookbooks and memoirs are quite a delight ,” Harbron says. “Christina Lang will talk about writing cookbooks and managing a new baby with her husband. She’s been on the Today [show] and several national broadcasts. She’s a real sweetheart and lives in Kirkwood.” The brunch also features an auction. The reach of this single organization truly impresses, impacting more than 43,000 people in the community with 63,000-plus volunteer-hours clocked just last year. “Assistance League is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization whose members identify, develop, fund and implement programs to serve and meet the needs of children and adults in the community,” Harbron explains. “We’re all about helping children and deserving adults. We intend to [commit to] more hours this year and expand our programs.”
Those programs include Operation School Bell, which supplies school uniforms; Steps for Success, which supplies athletic shoes; Operation Hug, which supplies bears to children in emergency rooms; My Own Fun Stuff, which supplies activity kits to children in emergency rooms and adults suffering from dementia; and Outreach, which answers special requests and provides funding to outside agencies. “Fantastic Finds, an upscale boutique retail store, is our largest fundraiser. We have a dedicated team of all volunteers at the store,” Harbron says. Shop at the boutique or attend the Authors Brunch, and further the mission of this important organization, which looks out for the community’s children. Visit 30 Henry Ave. or call 636-227-6200 and learn how to get involved. Check out alstl.org to learn more.

This organization changes children’s lives. It changes their lives for the long run. Nothing makes me more proud than to be able to help a child that has been struggling for whatever reason. Maybe their parents are unemployed. Maybe their parents are struggling. Maybe they have a learning disability or another disability that’s making it difficult for them. SouthSide helps those children. SouthSide gets to the root of the problem and helps children achieve. You start a kid off in preschool, they do well in grade school, they do well in middle school, they do well in high school. The next thing you know, they’re being the auctioneer at the gala. Legal Services of Eastern Missouri
JUSTICE FOR ALL BALL Story and photos by Elizabeth Merkel
L
egal Services of Eastern Missouri recently celebrated its 26th annual Justice for All Ball at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch. More than 700 of its closest friends attended this year’s “Diamonds Are Forever” event. The festivities included cocktails, a silent auction, dinner, dancing and live entertainment. Stephanie Dorssom and Priscilla Murray served as co-chairs, and the organization’s executive director and general counsel, Dan Glazier, greeted guests. The funds raised that evening help to advance the organization’s mission of providing high-quality, holistic, civil-legal assistance for lowincome/low-opportunity individuals throughout the area. The event helps to ensure that the organization can provide aid to victims of domestic violence, families facing homelessness, children who receive special-education services and those who seek access to health care.

L
ast month, the St. Louis Public Library (SLPL) Foundation completed its Central To Your World capital campaign led by campaign co-chairs Alison Nichols Ferring and Tom Schlafly, both members of the SLPL Board of Directors. The $20 million campaign goal was part of an overall $70 million project which restored and modernized the Central Library downtown. SLPL Foundation director Elizabeth Reeves says the Central To Your World campaign is the largest fundraising project the Library’s Foundation has ever taken on. The Foundation accepted the challenge of raising $20 million of the specified $70 million. That $20 million came from St. Louis’ thriving philanthropic community. Reeves says the success of the campaign was largely helped by campaign co-chairs Alison Nichols Ferring and Tom Schlafly. Ferring says the library is a place of transformation for all who visit, and she is deeply grateful to all the donors who helped the cause. Schlafly notes that St. Louis has a world class library because of Andrew Carnegie’s vision, and the donors in this campaign have helped further that. “The donors to the capital campaign have helped ensure that Carnegie’s vision will be realized throughout the 21st century in ways he, and we, could never have imagined,” he says. Reeves says she has been privileged to work with two dedicated and thoughtful civic leaders whose commitment to the library is unmatched. “[Ferring and Schlafly], through their work as co-chairs for the Central To Your World capital campaign, embraced the library’s vision and contributed generously to restore and revitalize the Central Library,” she says. “Today’s citizens and future generations owe them our sincere gratitude for their tremendous leadership.”
The Central Library building opened in downtown St. Louis in 1912, and restoration of the building was completed in 2012. The Central Library is home to a wide array of free activities year-round and has seen more than 1.5 million visitors since its reopening in 2012. The library hosts authors, the Not So Quiet! Concert Series that’s inside during the winter and outside in the warm-weather months, a classical music series, movies, writing workshops for veterans, children’s programs, exhibits and more. Currently, the library is hosting a major photography exhibit, Through the Lens of St. Louis, to be followed by an exhibit on fantasy maps in literature, which will tie in

with the Summer Reading Club theme. The library also hosts a comics convention that was attended by approximately 1,000 people last year, and Reeves and the library team look forward to the event’s continued success each year going forward. “The library is alive,” Reeves says. “Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of individuals, businesses and foundations, we were able to preserve a St. Louis landmark and bring it into the 21st century where thousands visit and use it every day.” 314-241-2288, slpl.org, 1301 Olive St., St. Louis

CRAZY ABOUT CORAL IN OAHU By Alecia Lassing
Sunrise over Hanauma Bay on Oahu, Hawaii
The quaint tropical paradise that is Hanauma Bay in Oahu, Hawaii, has lush vegetation and magnificent white-sand beaches that are alluring, to say the least. However, the bay’s rich coral reefs are what brings approximately 1 million tourists a year to partake in underwater activities. The bay’s curved shape and mild wave action make it the ideal area to sustain a living coral reef of many different shapes and sizes. Once a favorite fishing spot of the Hawaiian kings, Hanauma Bay is now residing there, including the multicolored Humuhumunukunukuapua’a fish, also known as the reef triggerfish, which is a symbol of Hawaii. Since coral reefs are collections of living entities, they can’t be removed from the water, and offenders can face a hefty fine. Luckily, there are many coralinspired pieces that can bring a little piece of paradise into your home.

When doWnsizing and decluttering your home, here are the best practices from a local interior designer.
S
ometimes you just need to start fresh. In the world of interior design, that might mean creating a new space to match a new phase of life. Teddy Karl, principal designer at The Great Cover-Up in Ladue, regularly works with people to make their environments reflect their lives, especially when big changes occur. Karl says downsizing most often occurs for homeowners after adult children leave or as older adults no longer want to care for a large house and yard. “Typically, they are ready for fewer bedrooms and less square footage,” he says. “Also, they might want a first-floor master suite or, better yet, an elevator.” Filling the smaller space with less “stuff” is almost always part of the equation. “Simplifying is usually brought up, as well – often a hearth or gathering room instead of a formal living room and family room,” Karl notes. Yet people collect a lot of things through the years, and culling the field for the most meaningful pieces is one of the first and most important steps. “I always suggest that they go through and select their favorite things,” Karl says. “I also like to move things around to give a sense of newness. I might opt to put the seldom sat-on living room sofa in the new hearth room, where it will finally get a chance to be used, or artwork that has always lived in a never-seen bedroom will seem new.” Karl recognizes that it can be hard to part with some items, so he recommends passing heirlooms on to other family members around the same time you’re considering downsizing. “Perhaps it’s time to leave the silver polishing to the next generation or, as my grandmother did, just use the sterling every day,” he says. “It doesn’t have a chance to tarnish that way, plus who deserves to use it more than you? On the other hand, it’s also a nice feeling to share things with the kids – let them have the things they cherish now, rather than waiting until you are gone, which leaves sad times attached to good memories.” Items that aren’t passed on or given away represent the most important belongings, and those favorite things often take pride of place or become a focal point around which the rest of the space can be developed. “If you anchor different spaces with those favorites, such as a rug or needlepoint chair or pillow, it gives a starting point to work with,” he says. Sometimes a homeowner has a favorite color or fabric type that might not have worked in his or her former house, and it will be a welcome change for the new space. In fact, Karl notes that some people jump at the chance to divest themselves of almost everything and create a completely new color palette and design scheme. A big challenge involves avoiding overcrowding in the new space, especially if it’s smaller. Every item brought from a dap place, but there’s always room for compromise, Karl says. previous home should have a purpose and rked with a couple combining households after a second marriage. Sometimes we chose the ‘better’ off th items and just spread them out.” With an eye toward the future, Karl suggests that homeowners regularly assess their belongings, whether moving to a would need or find impossible to part with if they were moving sooner rather than new space or not, and consider what theyy w whatever reason, this planning process will pave the way. later. decided to get back into the
business world nearly a decade ago, after her four sons were all in school. With an undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and an MBA from Washington University, Bundy was well-equipped to launch her career as a real estate agent at Gladys Manion. In a short time, Bundy has made an impression on the St. Louis market: She ranked No. 8 on the St. Louis Business Journal’s annual “Highest Selling St. Louis Real Estate Agents” list, and was named the top agent at Gladys Manion last year, with the highest sales. Bundy also was named one of only two agents in St. Louis’ Top 100 Agents, who achieved an average home price of more than $1 million in 2014. Bundy has achieved $94 million in lifetime sales, her success comes from her immense industry knowledge and her ability to listen to clients, ensuring their goals and priorities are met. A St. Louis native and longtime Ladue resident, Bundy’s expertise lies mainly in the areas of Clayton, Ladue, Frontenac, Creve Coeur and Huntleigh. When Bundy is not attending one of her sons’ football or lacrosse games, she enjoys traveling, playing golf and spending time with her family. She and her family vacationed in Africa last summer and are headed to Europe this summer. Bundy says traveling is the best education she can give her kids outside of their day-today schooling.

With two master’s degrees
(a master’s in mass communication, marketing and advertising from Boston University; a master’s in Romanian and Spanish linguistics and literature from Sofia University in Bulgaria) and fluency in five languages, Maya Kefalov is proving that “international is the new location, location, location.” Her academic and executive background in marketing and advertising, including market research, has contributed to her 14 years of success in the real estate industry. She incorporates innovative marketing systems and custom pricing analysis to yield the highest sales among comparable homes, which translates to real estate growth for sellers and buyers through her smartly designed solutions. Kefalov has a passion for architecture, interior design and renovations. This passion leads her to be inventive and make a difference by doing things that haven’t been done before. “Companies, organizations and people who are open to improvement have my utmost respect and admiration – for it is difficult to change the world, while it is easy to just follow the flow,” she says. This has led her to tap into a network of potential clients for her sellers that reaches well beyond the city, state and even country. Kefalov came to the United States in 1995, following the dream of her husband, a professor of neuroscience at Washington University. St. Louis became their home in 2005, after six years spent in both Baltimore and Boston. Encouraging freedom of choice for her three teenagers, she carries this philosophy over to her business as a Realtor who guides, but never pushes, and still negotiates great deals for clients.

The expertise of The Krause Basler Team lies in knowing how to listen to people so they can meet their real estate needs. Dawn Krause and Tom Basler recognize the importance of a high level of knowledge in the real estate industry, and place importance on first understanding each client and clients’ needs in order to then determine how best to serve them. Basler always held an interest in homes, and after six-plus years in corporate America as an engineer, he chose a career path which allowed him more control over his destiny. He grew up in the small town of Ste. Genevieve and quickly understood the value of building personal relationships. Her twin boys were diagnosed with autism at the age of three, which has given her the opportunity to view the world in a way she previously had never imagined. Both Krause and Basler give to the community in a multitude of ways, from supporting The BackStoppers, an organization which aids families of first responders who are killed in the line of duty, to taking part in the annual Keller Williams event known as Red Day, where offices close and agents spend a day volunteering in the community. Chesterfield Doctor Delivers A Recipe For Weight Loss
Dr. Bryan Deloney, PSc.D, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).
NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida,

parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.
Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.
Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.
Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

Q&A
With Louisa Rechter and Alessandra Perez-Rubio of Mestiza New York You and Alessandra met when you were students at Washington University. What were you studying? Did you both have aspirations to go into fashion design? Louisa: I was majoring in French and marketing at Wash U. While studying at the Paris-Sorbonne junior year, I saw fashion at its best. I remember a friend calling me at 1 in the morning saying, “Wake up! We just got invited to the Stella McCartney after-party!” I went and was star-struck by the Fashion Week crowd… It was one of the most fun nights of my life. I knew then, after college, I had to find a job in fashion! Also, retail is in my blood. My grandfather had a chain of department stores in St. Louis and throughout the Midwest: Rechter Bros. Department Stores. How did you two first broach the topic of collaborating, and how did you work out who would take on various roles within the enterprise? Louisa: When Alessandra was getting married in 2013, she required all the women to wear gowns. I didn’t own a gown and wanted to find something really special. I was disappointed with what I could find within my budget. The affordable gowns were cheesy redcarpet replicas with questionable quality. The beautiful designer gowns were out of my budget. Alessandra and I both noticed this white space for unique, accessible dresses in the market and wanted to address it. Alessandra: It wasn’t until a year later that we took the leap to start our own company. We were both working and unhappy at our jobs. I asked Louisa over wine one night if she would be my business partner and start a fashion line. I showed her my sketches, and she was impressed! Because of our backgrounds, I handle the creative side, and Louisa handles the business. I come up with the designs and the fabrications; Louisa will edit the assortment and price it. On a daily basis, we divide and conquer because we are just a two-woman show! Your company, Mestiza New York, is influenced by both your Filipino and St. Louis backgrounds. How do those two places inform your work, and what specific influences are connected to each? Alessandra: I grew up in Manila and San Francisco, and Louisa’s mother grew up in Cebu. “Mestiza” is a term traditionally used in the Philippines to describe a person of mixed ancestry. Believing that one’s identity is something plural, we take this idea and work it into our aesthetic, blending different sensibilities to create something uniquely beautiful. We’re inspired by photographs of our mothers and grandmothers in the Philippines in the ’60s and the women we see on the

streets of New York and in our daily life. For me, our dresses capture the detail you see in the Barong or Maria Clara [traditional Filipino formal attire], but are also functional and relevant today. We design for women with busy social lives. Why did you start your business in New York as opposed to St. Louis? Will your fashions be available here too? Louisa: New York is the fashion capital of the world! There is manufacturing, supplies, textile representatives with contacts from all over the world – everything is at our fingertips in the garment district. It’s the best place for emerging fashion designers. We’d love to be carried in St. Louis – we are available online [mestizanewyork. com] and in select retailers.
What are your plans for Mestiza New York? Are you working on a new line? What kinds of trends will we be seeing from your company? Alessandra: Our goal is to be the online destination for cocktail attire. We are always designing and coming up with cool new concepts. Next season, you will see some updates to our bestselling styles, ruffle sleeves, palazzo jumpsuits, ornate, eye-catching fabrications all with a nod to vintage glamour and Southeast Asia. What is the most important thing you’d like our readers to know about you and your company? Louisa: I think it’s important for readers to know that we built the brand from a shoestring budget! Not only are we creative, but we’re also businesswomen. Each decision we’ve made has been strategic and scrappy!

The “King of VinTage” joins The sT. Louis symphony for a one-of-a-Kind cLassicaL fashion show.
t’s rare to see the fine arts of fashion design and classical music share the same stage, but the st. Louis symphony’s inaugural Four seasons of Fashion event on Monday, April 4, plans to accomplish just that. A runway show will feature vintage couture gowns from Versace, Christian Dior, Chanel, ysL and more, set to a chamber performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, led by st. Louis symphony concertmaster David halen. Event chair Miran halen’s brainchild, the Four seasons of Fashion is the first event of its kind for the symphony. “There are many fashion shows out in the community, but we wanted to do something different,” halen says. “We have a beautiful hall and a Grammy-winning orchestra, [taking] music, fashion and art, and combining these together.”
miran halen photo by suzy gorman
The vintage theme came as no accident – founded in 1880, the st. Louis symphony is in its 136th season, making it the second-oldest orchestra in the country. This event celebrates the symphony’s rich history with a vintage hollywood glam theme, complete with a red-carpet entrance, photo wall and paparazzi, with screens in the hors d’oeuvres reception displaying photos from throughout the symphony’s history. st. Louis Motorcars is bringing in three vintage cars for display at the red carpet. in fitting with the vintage theme, halen enlisted the help of Cameron silver, Los Angeles’ “King of Vintage” and founder and owner of LA’s premiere vintage boutique, Decades. one of Time magazine’s “25 most influential names and faces in fashion,” silver has dressed many A-list celebrities, including Julia roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lady Gaga and salma hayek.
The runway show features four collections of gowns curated by silver that reflect the theme of each season. halen had connected with silver in the past, and when she began developing the idea that eventually became the Four seasons of Fashion, silver was the obvious choice for the runway presentation. For silver, the event is a homecoming of sorts, as st. Louis has roots in the fashion david halen, industry. “historically, concertmaster st. Louis was a very important part of the fashion industry, especially for shoes,” silver says. “st. Louis warehouses were the champions of the largest part of the footwear industry globally; there is a historic love of style that emulates from st. Louis that a lot of people don’t know about.” The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres from hiro Asian Kitchen – presenting the four seasons of food – and a silent auction that halen promises will be very exciting – among the many items is a six-night stay in Aspen, designer jewelry and an item from Decades. During the preshow and silent auction, a photo-montage video will showcase vintage photos from the history of the st. Louis symphony and society patrons through the decades. The fashion show will follow at 7:30 p.m., followed by Champagne, dessert and a viewing of the gowns. The art of fashion and classical music will truly meet when a chamber orchestra featuring concertmaster David halen and st. Louis symphony musicians perform Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as models walk the runway. Four seasons of Fashion is sure to be a highly sensory experience, with timeless fashion meeting timeless music. “it just shows that great art, great visual art, great theatrical arts, great musical arts – they can all join together to create something very modern,” Leonard slatkin, mary mcfadden and john Browning silver says. “There’s a reason Archive image from St. Louis Symphony this music remains relevant for centuries or decades – it’s because it’s high art.” The event is a fundraiser for the symphony’s hundreds of free community and music-education programs, as well as the st. Louis symphony youth orchestra, which is now in its 46th season of training the next generation of world-class musicians. Thousands of individuals benefit from these programs annually. The event is sponsored by Caleres, Chic Boutique, Decades, Dominic Michael salon, hiro Asian Kitchen, Ladue News and st. Louis Motorcars. Event co-chairs include Faith Berger, Kim Miller and Janice steel. honorary chairpersons are Carol and tom Voss and Matt Bruckel and Katherine Green Bruckel, whose mother, Karole, was a member of the st. Louis symphony’s rotogravure Committee – two generations of symphony involvement in one family. Jasmine huda from television station KtVi will serve as mistress of ceremonies. General-admission tickets for $125 per person are still available. For tickets, head to stlsymphony.org/ fashion or call 314-286-4153. St. Louis Symphony, 718 N. I like the fact that Mizzou has given men’s basketball coach Kim Anderson another year. He has good freshmen, his recruiting class is solid, and Jordan Barnett from CBC is a very talented player. Anderson inherited the Titanic, so give him another year to try and turn it around.

Sterling K. Brown was once an outstanding football and basketball player at MICDS. Now he plays the role of Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson on FX. He told me the other day he loved his battles with John Burroughs.

Bill DeWitt III has an impressive daughter named Natalie. She started Prom Dress Share STL (promdresssharestl.com), where she collects and distributes prom dresses for those who can’t afford them. It’s a nice nonprofit business for a 16-year-old junior at John Burroughs.

Just because everybody in the baseball world thinks the Cubs are better than the Cardinals, it doesn’t mean it’s true. I do like the Chicago offense, but
the Cardinals have a better starting-pitching staff and bullpen. As former Yankees manager Bob Lemon once said, “The two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen.”
5
Every time I read a quote from Rams executive vice president of football operations and chief operating officer Kevin Demoff or hear him on the radio, I am reminded of this stat. He was 37-74-1 running the Rams, and he has more job security than a Supreme Court Justice. That’s what happens when you have an owner like Stan Kroenke.

I used to really care about the combine and mock drafts, but I have no real interest in them right now. Thank goodness for fantasy football – I am almost completely scarred by the NFL.

We have a model hockey franchise that just landed the Winter Classic at Busch Stadium. There are very few things the Blues don’t do in a first-class fashion. Just give us one nice, long playoff run this season. The fans deserve it. The franchise deserves it.
By Frank Cusumano A parade on Market Street for the Blues would be one of the great moments in St. Louis sports history.

Aledmys Díaz got out of a black Escalade in uniform a few years ago with a bunch of guys in dark suits in Jupiter. He worked out for the Cardinals, and they gave him 8 million bucks. He was a bust, but then all of a sudden, he figured it out. From July 5 on, he hit .332 and 14 homers in 296 plate appearances. Wouldn’t it be great if he became a Cardinal star at shortstop?

Chase Daniel is one of the greatest Mizzou Tigers of all time. I can’t understand why he would sign to be a backup in Philadelphia. I know backups stay healthy and make cash, but don’t you have to try and be a starter before your career is over? Hyken’s Homework Fostering Independence
D
uring my preteen years, I pedaled all over Creve Coeur. Velvet Freeze, Streetside Records and McDonald’s were my favorite places. Sometimes I met friends for burgers, shakes and shenanigans, while other times I just cruised the streets. I learned how to entertain myself and make responsible decisions – most of the time. Today’s children are not given the same freedoms as yesterday’s youth. As a result, many adolescents become overreliant on their parents and get stuck in their dependent ways. They struggle with decisionmaking and being independent – and at the same time, many parents become overly enmeshed and have difficulty letting go. There is no formula for teaching children life
skills. It also is difficult for kids to become self-reliant without parental guidance. Start early and provide age-appropriate activities that foster personal responsibility. With young children, give concrete tasks such as keeping a clean room and making their own snacks. As kids enter the preteen years, discuss problem-solving strategies and clarify expectations – turning homework in, doing chores, having good hygiene. With older adolescents, work on money management, personal accountability and communication skills. And no matter what the age of your child, have clearly stated consequences for when poor decisions are made. As your kids develop more-responsible behaviors, it is also important to give them a family voice. Although all homes should be benevolent dictatorships, children
By Russell Hyken
should still be included in some decision-making matters. This will not only boost a child’s self-esteem, but also make him or her feel valued. If your parenting goes as planned, your offspring will eventually leave the nest. And as difficult as it can be to watch, sometimes life’s best lessons are learned the hard way. Support your children in the decisions they make, and be there to pick up the pieces in a nonjudgmental way when they ask for help. Prior to going into private practice as a psychotherapist and learning disabilities specialist, Russell Hyken, Ph.D., Ed.S, M.A., LPC, NCC, worked for more than 15 years as an English teacher, school counselor, psychological examiner and school administrator. Camp Jump Start in Imperial, Missouri, teaches adolescents to take control of their nutrition, exercise, health, happiness and so much more.
I
t’s day one at Camp Jump Start in Imperial, Missouri. Camp director and nurse Jean Huelsing asks her campers to name the coolest cars they have ever seen. The kids, ages 9 to 18, shout out: “Bentley!” “Ferrari!” “Lamborghini!” “RollsRoyce!” She then asks if they would ever put regular gas in those automobiles. They respond loud and clear: “No! It will ruin the engine.” “Now let’s compare the fuel in the automobile to how we feed our bodies,” Huelsing continues. “Each of you has one vehicle, one body, in your lifetime in which to travel. You put food in for fuel. What you choose to eat and how you take care of your body will give you a better chance for good health and a better life.” Huelsing also is chief executive officer of Living Well Village, a 250-acre campground that houses health camps and wellness programs, and director of its flagship program, Camp Jump Start, the only not-for-profit residential weight-loss camp for kids in North America. The 250-acre camp, a half-hour drive from Ladue, attracts campers from 50 states and 20 foreign countries. Summer 2015 saw 200 adolescents lose a total of 2,538 pounds. While working as a registered nurse, Huelsing explains she saw children who were sick with diseases that normally affect adults. She had an idea. “Honey, give me all your money,” she recalls telling her husband, Tom. Founded in 2003, her solution was Camp Jump Start, which now holds a pair of four-week sessions each summer in a medically safe, supervised and supportive environment. Huelsing says the bottom line here is a mission “to help kids take control of their own health and happiness, and all children – with or without weight issues – should attend the camp.” To tend to the camp’s daily needs, Huelsing and Tom sold their home and now live in a small house on the camp’s grounds. Published nationally and internationally in medical journals, Huelsing has been honored as a St. Louis Woman of Achievement. She has appeared on national news and MTV, and PBS filmed a documentary at the camp last summer called Weighed Down that will air this spring. Last summer, 49 campers arrived at camp with warning signs of Type 2 diabetes. Twenty-one campers had their symptoms reduced, and 28 had their warning signs completely eliminated by the end of camp. “Each was given a new lease on life,” she says. “Blood pressure readings for all campers improved. Each summer we see reversals in disease.” A study by the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control reports that lifestyle is better at delaying the onset of diabetes than any medication. “Camp Jump Start is part of the solution,” Huelsing says. “Our data shows that we put kids back on track to health. They learn it, live it and then do it at home.” Huelsing explains how she shows her campers two human hearts, one healthy and

the other one five times larger. “The big heart belonged to a 50-year-old man who had quadruple-bypass surgery,” she explains to them. “He worked an 8-to-5 job daily, ate fast food for lunch, laid around on his sofa after work and, 10 years later, was surprised that something happened to his vessels. If you live healthfully, your insides will be healthy. It is all about choices. We teach our kids to pay attention to their weaknesses but to also play to their strengths; we teach them how to take control of their lives.” As a bonus, all campers voice more confidence and better self-esteem. Teegan, 15, calls the camp her “home away from home,” adding, “It’s a place of safety and self-protection. This is the first time I’ve felt this happy about myself, and it’s not just because I lost weight – it’s because this camp taught me self-worth.” She says that she also enjoyed the outdoor activities, such as biking, hiking, swimming and field sports, and that camp is fun and not a boot camp. In 2015, campers attending for eight weeks averaged weight loss of 31 pounds. Those in the four-week program lost an average of 17 pounds. Historically, kids lose 7 to 10 percent of their body weight in four weeks, which can be doubled in eight weeks, according to Huelsing. A total of 1,641 waist-inches disappeared. “We give parents homework so that the environment is healthy when their child returns home,” Huelsing says. “A dad called and said, ‘Fix my kid.’ Instead, we helped the entire family. So many families feel helpless and hopeless, and the children have no self-worth. After camp, kids return home with a healthy and positive attitude.” Huelsing says she does it by teaching people how to take control of their situations and giving them the tools they need to get to a better place. “One cannot believe everything written on the Internet or in grocery stores,” she says. “When times get tough, we all need support and accurate information. Camp Jump Start helps campers make better choices. Weight is a lifelong struggle. Many times the environment [around] peer pressure can be so destructive. Camp teaches healthier lifestyle choices.” Camp Jump Start is not just nutrition and exercise, either. Huelsing feels strongly that adolescents need to disconnect from electronics and reconnect with people. “A good many kids don’t know how to make or sustain a friendship,” she says. “In our anti-bullying program, we listen and address the issues. We teach kids how not to be a victim with our self-defense classes. Anger management and anxiety are huge with our kids today, so we teach coping skills to make the kids feel comfortable in their own skin. There are programs at camp focusing on family issues, loss of a loved one and healthy relationships. When you take care of these causes, the symptom of weight becomes a nonissue.” Camp Jump Start, 3602 Lions Den Road, Imperial, 636-287-5004, campjumpstart.com

it’s paired well with carrots, scallions and red onion for added flavor and texture, and accented with soy sauce and wasabi mayo. A glass of Bonotto Delle Tezze Pinot Grigio ($7) made for a fine accompaniment. The menu at Cyrano’s has an extensive selection of salads and sandwiches, but this visit we turned our attention to the larger specialty plates, specifically the chicken spiedini ($13.50) and the bacon-wrapped meatloaf ($15.50). The chicken spiedini is a straightahead take on this classic – tender pieces of chicken breast served with greens and roasted grape tomatoes, as well as topped with shaved Asiago and a tangy balsamic reduction. Instead of one big slab of meatloaf, the Cyrano’s version takes a cue from the steakhouse
and presents it as two bacon-wrapped medallions. They’re served with some garlic mashed potatoes and a bordelaise sauce. This traditional French red wine sauce brings some sweetness and depth to the dish and serves to elevate it even further. Think of this as comfort food with some added class. As I mentioned previously, Cyrano’s is known for its desserts, so it was imperative that we end our visit with something sweet. After much deliberation over the multitude of options, we finally settled on a piece of the Brown Shugga’ Pie ($7.50), which featured brownsugar gooey butter in a cookie crust. This dessert is the perfect size – just big enough to satisfy after a hearty meal. The brown sugar gives an added dimension to the

yrano’s Café & Wine Bar in Webster Groves is widely renowned for its dessert delicacies like the Cleopatra – Frenchvanilla ice cream, bananas, strawberries, rum sauce, gold brick and whipped cream – which has been a St. Louis favorite for more than 40 years. But Cyrano’s has an extensive food menu as well, making it a convenient (and delicious) place to dine before a show at The Rep or to stop by for drinks and dessert afterward. We were peckish this trip, so a lighter appetizer was required to save room for the main event. The rare seared tuna ($11.95) fit the bill nicely. The succulent fish, subtly seared, is the star of this dish, obviously, but

gooey butter, making it a bit heavier in flavor and even more decadent than usual. The crisp crust adds some texture and keeps all of that deliciousness contained, but doesn’t take away from it. Cyrano’s also has an adjacent parking lot, though it does tend to fill up quickly. No worries, though, because street spots are available as well. In addition to dinner, Cyrano’s offers a Sunday brunch and a happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with half-price wine by the glass and beers. There’s occasional live music to be had here as well. Cyrano’s has plenty of outdoor seating, too, for those who enjoy dining alfresco. Cyrano’s Café & Wine Bar, 603 E. tory: It’s September 1947, and the baseball season S is winding down. This has been no ordinary year, as the “color barrier” in Major League Baseball has been broken by the promotion of Jackie Robinson from the minors to the roster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Although many black players rejoice, Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige shows disdain. He’s long been the shining star among many great athletes in the Negro Baseball League, the fastest and flashiest pitcher in perhaps all of baseball. If he isn’t the first black ballplayer to enter the majors, then what’s the point? While his teammates – well-known slugger Buck O’Neil and a promising rookie named Art Young – talk about Robinson, Paige devotes his time to setting up a series of barnstorming games opposite a squad put together by noted Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller. When bad weather forces the cancellation of a game, black and white players alike visit the swanky boarding house of Mrs. Hopkins in Kansas City, home of Paige’s Kansas City Monarchs team. Feller’s young teammate, a hot-tempered player named Franky Palmieri, contends with Young for the affections of Mrs. Hopkins’ smart and pretty daughter Moira. Young is looking forward to attracting the attention of Major League scouts as his ticket to the big leagues, and O’Neil has a strategy for his own future, too. Paige, for his part, seems forever haunted by the eerie presence of a saxophone-wielding musician who notes his every move with a jazzy punctuation. It’s the end of an era of sorts, the start of the long and painful process of the civil rights movement a decade before Rosa Parks made it official. Will Paige be a part of it or forever stuck in the past? Highlights: The Grand Old Game long has inspired poets and writers with its pastoral beauty and leisurely pace to fill the days and nights of spring, summer and autumn. To the lengthy list of classic works such as The Natural, Bang the Drum Slowly, Fences and A League of Their Own add this smart and aching drama by Trey Ellis and Ricardo Khan. It magically fills the stage at The Rep at the start of a St. Louis baseball season and completes The Rep’s own 49th year of theater. Other Info: Kudos to The Rep’s marketing department for the stylish facsimile baseball card of Paige, portrayed by Robert Karma Robinson, complete with interesting tidbits from Paige’s life and career. That’s a home run, although the program cover that features a black batter and not a pitcher like Paige is an out. Regardless, Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing is a delightful albeit often melancholy production that carefully depicts what can happen when people are denied opportunities afforded others simply because they’re “different” from the folks calling the shots.
By Mark Bretz
It’s depressing to see the jovial, savvy and hugely talented Paige chafe at his denied possibilities, as superbly portrayed by Robinson. Not only does the actor have the lanky look of the ageless wizard who was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971, but also he successfully emulates Paige’s ungainly pitching motion, which baffled batters for decades. Robinson likewise succeeds at showing not only Paige’s notoriously mischievous humor, but also the resentment that simmered beneath the surface of his genial demeanor. That aspect is accentuated in a tense scene between him and Michael Chenevert, as his teammate and friend O’Neil, when Paige scathingly tells the hitter, “You don’t know what it’s like to be great” as an explanation of why he isn’t interested in being other than the first black man to break the baseball race barrier. There are strong performances by Chenevert as Satchel’s devoted pal, O’Neil, who reveals his own sweet secret, and Peterson Townsend as Young, the hopeful rookie who yearns to make the big league in this new age. Vanessa A. Jones shines as the classy Mrs. Hopkins, who shares a rich history with Satchel that he fumbles away, and Tsilala Brock shows the love and devotion of Mrs. Hopkins’ daughter, Moira, who has dreams of emulating her mother’s youthful success as a singer in boozy nightclubs. Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Swing is a multilayered tale that shows the simplicity of baseball contrasted with the scars of racial injustice that, sadly, remains as American as a day at the ballpark.

he new president of Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design is an avid craft collector. She appreciates craft of all types, but is particularly passionate about handmade eggs, baskets and vases. However, Vicki L. Sauter doesn’t keep all her eggs in one basket. She can’t. She has too many. Her craft collection, displayed in her Creve Coeur home, includes 25 handcrafted baskets, 100 vases and more than 200 eggs. Collected from all over the world, some eggs are hand-painted, beaded, needlepointed or riveted. Others are made of rosebuds, china, crystal, blown glass or marble, and one unique glass egg is painted on the inside. Sauter, 61, has been collecting vases for 36 years. “When we bought our home, I started gardening,” she says, adding that she then began buying vases to display the beautiful flowers growing in her garden. “At one point it got out of control. I now have vases of all shapes, colors and sizes, including many purchased in the Craft Alliance Gift Gallery shop on Delmar.” Sauter raves about the shop, saying it “provides a friendly experience while you explore the latest in fine contemporary craft. We have an outstanding collection of affordable jewelry, scarves, serving pieces and other handmade items. It is a museum where you can take your treasure home.” Before her recent presidential role, Sauter served on the board of the nonprofit arts education center for more than 10 years and also has chaired its technology committee. She says she enjoys combining her expertise in technology with her love of crafts and volunteerism. She has given freely of her time and talents to introduce computing skills to Craft Alliance and has enjoyed taking many exciting and stimulating classes there. “We are still working to get up to the modern age,” she says. “It’s critical to have technology tools available. We’re now building communities of people interested in craft online through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and blogs; this helps Craft Alliance reach many more people, especially young people.” Sauter’s primary goal as president is “to help Craft Alliance continue the wonderful work that it has done in the community, in the classroom and through support of St. Louis’ artists,” she says. “I will help to strengthen the financial base of Craft Alliance and foster increased use of technology to improve operations. I would like to see more classes using recycled or upcycled material and classes that combine craft and technology, such as the growing trend of wearable tech.” She calls Craft Alliance a “jewel that so many people in St. Louis do not know about,” referencing its two St. Louis-area locations in the Delmar Loop and on Grand Avenue, its school-outreach programs and even juvenile jails. “Our big draw in both facilities is clay – throwing, manipulating and painting clay,” she says. Classes also are offered in woodturning, ceramics, glass, metal, fiber and graphics. “We are moving and pushing our boundaries of craft a little more than looking at things in a traditional way,” she says. “In the fiber area, we also offer weaving classes and instruction in dyeing fabrics. Fiber art is a love of mine.” Jovial, with a winning smile, she laughs when she remembers some of the professors

She also is a curator of Grace’s Place – a museum at UMSL about computers and information technology that honors Grace Murray Hopper, an American computer scientist and U.S. Navy rear admiral – and belongs to the mission committee at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church. Born and raised in Chicago, she met her husband of 38 years, UMSL professor Joseph Martinich, in graduate school at Northwestern University. Sauter has published more than 40 journal articles and written several books, two of which she self-published. “I loved creating my book on the history of streetlights,” she says. “They are so appealing to me, and I’ve included many photographs and commentary from around the world.” Her book You’re Never Too Old to Surf is a howto for those 60 and older on safely surfing the Internet.
