CONTENTS SOCIETY I LOVE A GOOD TELEVISION SERIES. WHEN I FIND ONE THAT ENGAGES and fascinates me, I find a way to ‘stick with it’ to the very end. Back in the day, it meant staying in (or staying up). These days, my DVR makes getting caught up so much easier. Not that I’d need it with my latest obsession, House of Cards, which I’ve binge-watched for the last two seasons. Recently, the series’ creator, St. Louis native Beau Willimon, appeared at a sold-out fundraiser for the St. Louis County Library Foundation. And while those in the audience already were big fans like me, it became apparent that they became even bigger fans that evening. Mr. Willimon spoke passionately about the need for accessible public libraries in every St. Louis neighborhood. As a John Burroughs student, he fondly recalled his routine of walking to and from school to the library; and while there, he would devour books, and read and read and read. And his testimony wasn’t just lip service: He initiated an impromptu pledge drive during his appearance, pledging to personally match whatever funds were raised. Our coverage begins on p. 6.

WILLIMON RECEPTION

B

BY BRYAN SCHRAIER

EAU WILLIMON, THE CREATOR of House of Cards, returned to his hometown recently as the headliner of a special fundraiser for the St. Louis County Library Foundation. Willimon, a John Burroughs alum, also serves as head writer and executive director of Netflix’s runaway hit series starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. His appearance, which included a VIP reception and on-stage interview with KMOX’s Debbie Monterrey, drew a sell-out crowd to Library Headquarters. Proceeds from the event benefit the Library’s ForWord Fund, which seeks to sustain and expand literacy and early children education programs.

We Change Lives

On Spring Break, I noticed an older lady walking into our favorite restaurant. She was getting along pretty well. Once we sat down and I saw her face I realized she was one of our clients. She was laughing with family, drinking wine, and having a great time. Only 2 months ago, she was struggling to get around even in her own house after knee replacements. The family decided to hire us to work with her as personal trainers. Her quality of life after only about 16 sessions improved so much she was able to go on vacation. I don’t like tooting our own horns, but this client’s improvements really touched me and made me even more proud of what we do. Fitness can change your life! - Dale Huff, owner, CSCS

Emily Tobar, a sophomore at Pattonville High School, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award after a decade of membership with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. Not only did she earn the highest award in Girl Scouts, she also was recognized nationally for her exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, and with a President’s Volunteer Service Award granted by the program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Tobar constructed a 100-grid playground game board for Bridgeway Elementary School as part of her Gold Award project. In addition, she created age-appropriate lesson plans for teachers that incorporated the game board to teach students valuable math skills.

Students of Westminster Christian Academy engaged the community at Delmar Gardens as part of a new service project. Sophomore Michelle Morley conceptualized the project and recruited fellow students to join in connecting with seniors through a weekly hour-long visit. Westminster biblical ethics teacher Larry Hughes serves as faculty sponsor of the group. The students converse, play bingo, and serve refreshments to the residents. MARI DE VILLA

Springtime at the Villa BY LISA WATSON

S

PRING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED, AND AT Mari de Villa, things are really heating up, says Fred Wiesehan, CEO and president of the luxury retirement community. “Anyone who thinks retirement living is sedentary is sadly mistaken here; there’s always something going on,” he says. Among the most popular recent events were an Easter brunch, which was celebrated by more than 150 of Mari de Villa’s guests and family members, Wiesehan says. The community’s ever-popular Speakers Series recently hosted Ted Drewes, who is a resident of Villa Estates. Drewes’ talk focused on the history and growth of his famous custard stand, where he remains actively involved—and ended with a sweet treat for all, Wiesehan notes. Next week, renowned sculptor Harry Weber will continue the series. Residents of Mari de Villa have a full calendar

of events to choose from, including water aerobics and other exercise programs, book reviews, bridge groups and much more, Wiesehan says. Regular trips are planned to a variety of events throughout St. Louis, including shows at the Peabody Opera House, the Fox Theatre, the Touhill Performing Arts Center; as well as dinner at area restaurants such as Cardwell’s, Tony’s and Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant. “It’s entirely up to the guest,” he says. “They can pick and choose what they like—whether it’s going to see a guest speaker, boarding the Mercedes coach and going to a show, or listening to the daily live music offered in the Villa West and Villa East.” Asked about the community’s most popular events, Wiesehan says they usually always center around food. “Meals are a major activity of the Continued on page 93

“Lou will carry the home-opener game ball from Ballpark Village to the stadium. It’s really great, there’s a lot of drama to it. We usually come in for a private brunch—it’s quite a feast that the Cardinals put on. It’s our time to reconnect with with everybody. The excitement level is incredible and everyone is saying, Happy Opening Day! “Then, I usually trail Lou to the parade and the ‘red-jacket’ guys end up in the cars. And after they are all introduced, I’m usually there, filming. I follow him down there with my camera, capturing another moment of Lou’s life. After he is introduced, he gets out of the car, and the Hallof-Famers form a line and greet all of the players as they enter the field. It’s a time for the Hall-of-Famers to wish the guys a great season. “After that, Lou will do interviews; and then we eventually make our way to the suite, and to the best of our abilities, try to see some of the game...”

BILL DEWITT III St. Louis Cardinals President “I wear my Cardinals tie. It’s the only day of the regular season I wear a tie. I bring it out again for the playoffs, but that’s the only time.” Bill DeWitt III

RED SCHOENDIENST Cardinals Hall-of-Famer “I’m going to be at the ballpark to watch the game. They’ll have a ceremony before the game to introduce me and the rest of the Hall-of-Famers—the guys like Lou Brock and Gibson and Ozzie and myself—and we’ll drive all the way around the ballpark. It’s a little Red different when you’re not playing; when you’re a Schoendienst player or coaching, you can’t wait to get out there and start the season again. For us, this is just a nice way to start the season. The Cardinals organization has been good with their alumni, and they’re always trying to get them involved.”

YOGA FOR WEIGHT LOSS

In More Ways Than One

N

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

OT EVERYONE IS CUT OUT for the track or for the bike—or even for the elliptical machine. And weight loss can be a frustrating journey without some form of calorie-burning activity. But even if you can’t or don’t want to lace-up your running shoes, there are other options, and yoga is gaining attention as a weight-loss tool. “Yoga is an ancient practice that, in addition to its spiritual traditions, also has positive effects on weight loss and increasing overall health and vitality,” says Katie Kelly, owner of Shanti Yoga. “There is clinical evidence that proves exercise— and yoga, in particular—can decrease the release of cortisol (the stress hormone in your body), which leads to increased risk of obesity.” Kelly notes that Bikram yoga probably is best for weight loss. “As it is done in a heated room of 103 degrees or more, you will show immediate weight loss, but must also take into consideration the proportion of weight loss due to dehydration,” she says. “It can be a very detoxifying practice if you are healthy, have low blood pressure and don’t have health complications. If you are questioning this, you should discuss this with your primary-care provider before beginning this practice.” Other calorie-burning forms of yoga include vinyasa and ashtanga, which Lindsey Terry, a private Pilates and yoga instructor, who also teaches yoga classes at the St. Louis Jewish Community Center, refers to as ‘power yoga.’ “These classes incorporate physically challenging poses in which the student often uses their own body weight as resistance,” she explains. “This helps build lean muscle, and the more muscle we have, the more calories we burn. However, perhaps the more unexpected manner in which yoga can aid weight loss is through mindfulness, which is an essential component in all types of yoga. Through our practice, we learn to pay more attention in all aspects of our lives, including what we eat.” Yoga also attracts athletes who benefit from the practice’s stretching and focus on core strength. “I commonly see runners, cyclists and rock-climbers using yoga to stretch tight muscles,” Kelly says. “A Yin Yoga practice will have you holding stretches for longer periods of time to work even deeper into connective tissue and fascia.” Both Kelly and Terry recommend a 60- to 90-minute yoga class two or three times per week. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends doing at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly,” notes Kelly. “That can be broken

down into whatever variation fits your schedule. If you need to rest, take a restorative yoga class or try meditation. Both still work to lower the stress hormone cortisol, so it’s very beneficial to your body.”

Terry adds that her students gain more than just a better body. “Learn the true meaning of yoga and take it off the mat,” she says. “Can it help you lose weight? Absolutely. But it can also change you in more ways than you ever expected.”

EROBIC EXERCISE BENEFICIALLY affects almost every part of the body, from brain to heart to muscles, and spring is the perfect time to revamp an old routine or start a new one. Dale Huff, co-owner of NutriFormance and Athletic Republic-St. Louis. For example, doing too much too soon can be counterproductive and risky. “Other issues we see include not being informed on proper sports nutrition, and especially hydration during hot weather,” Huff says. “Lastly, wearing old or improper shoes for running on pavement. We see a lot of the freestyle shoes, which, for some people, do not give adequate protection from pronation (an inward roll of the foot), etc.” Mike Jaudes, owner and president of The Fitness Edge, also advises taking time to build up endurance if you’ve had a break or reduction in cardiovascular exercise during the winter. “Initially, build up to a longer distance or time or higher intensity, as opposed to just starting where you left off three, four, five months ago,” he explains. Those who have been consistent exercisers during the colder months and now want to ‘take it to the next level’ should consider increasing intensity, Jaudes adds. “As long as you know your body well enough to understand your fitness level and potential limitations, you’ll be fine.” Both trainers emphasize the importance of finding an enjoyable routine when developing or enhancing a cardio workout. “Find something that you look forward to doing and engage a friend or two,” Huff says. “Have a back-up plan for bad weather, so you can still get it done. Try and make it convenient— driving for 30 minutes to exercise is going to be a big roadblock unless you are really motivated.” Jaudes adds that a good cardio workout will feel both challenging and manageable. “It really depends on a variety of things: biomechanics issues or injuries, time frame, specific goals, medications, exercise history, genetic issues,” he says. “All of those factors really need to be considered before somebody just has a flashback from 20 years ago and decides they want to go play semi-pro football.” For this reason, he recommends talking with a trainer or instructor to create a wellrounded, reasonable and effective plan. An expert also can help you develop the best plan based on your individual fitness goals. “For general weight loss, we are going to suggest doing something every day,” Huff says. “For general cardiovascular conditioning, the frequency might be different and intensities could vary, depending on the plan.” Huff sums up his advice for developing and maintaining a good cardiovascular workout this way: “Lay out a plan, including modes of exercise that you enjoy. Lose the all-or-none mentality and know that you will miss workouts—you will feel like not doing it some days and there will be rough patches. You have to keep working through it and pushing forward.”

Springtime Conditioning

E

VEN OLE FELLAS LIKE ME FEEL invigorated with the warm, bright days of spring. I often jump out in the garage to clean out junk, and begin working on my garden. And by evening...yikes! I can hardly stand up without wrenching in pain. Why am I sharing such personal information? Well, truth be told, the very same issues can impose on the well-being of your pets. They, too, are coming out of relative inactivity of the recent winter months, and are excited to get out, run, jump and frolic around the yard and woodlands. They also can be vulnerable to muscle and joint pain. Of course, breed, age and conformation certainly can play a role. Again, as we manage ourselves, so should we manage our pets. If your dog is older, overweight, or has a history of intermittent or chronic lameness, you need to visit your veterinarian and discuss a best plan to introduce springtime activities and exercise. Be sure that, if needed, your pet is provided appropriate medications to assist in pain

BY DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF

START EXERCISE SLOWLY WITH CONTROLLED WALKS AND SHORT PERIODS OF PLAY...GRADUALLY WORK UP TO MORE ACTIVE EVENTS OVER SEVERAL WEEKS, AND YOU WILL LIKELY HAVE A HEALTHY PET, ABLE TO MOVE, JUMP, RUN OR SWIM WITHOUT ISSUE. management. There are medicines that provide glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, alone or in combination. There are anti-inflammatory medicants, or others that attack pain centers more specifically. Don’t play veterinarian, because some of these meds can cause upset tummies or impact kidney function. Let your doctor determine the best

protocol for your pet’s unique needs. The other side of the argument is that covering pain or discomfort too effectively can also threaten the well-being of your pet. If they feel too comfortable and painfree, they may try to play and move too much, and subsequently, they can hurt themselves. Obviously, whatever the pathology that exists in the body—at the spine, the hips, the limbs or wherever—be sure that these medications do not provide 100-percent resolve. So, masking the symptoms and over activity will likely cause a flare-up. Start exercise slowly with controlled walks and short periods of play. If overweight from winter time inactivity and malaise, then be sure to institute a proper diet program. Gradually work up to more active events over several weeks, and you will likely have a healthy pet, able to move, jump, run or swim without issue. If you do see any form of lameness or discomfort in your pet, be sure to stop all activities and get to your veterinarian for an exam, pronto! Have a wonderful, safe springtime with your beloved critters!

NCE UPON A TIME...Gail Velten retired as a teacher for the Kirkwood School District. She had never owned a pet in her life, and decided, “I did not want to leave this earth without experiencing owning a dog.” She felt unprepared to jump into dog ownership right away, though, since she didn’t know much about their care. “I started talking to ‘dog people’ about their pets,” she recalls. “It went on for months, until people were tired of listening to me, and said, You need to go down to the Humane Society and look...I’d never even petted a dog!” Velten called a friend who volunteered at the Humane Society of Missouri’s education department, and went to see the dogs. “She said, Let’s take this one to the get-to-know-you room. You know you can touch it, right? I was so distant!” Velten called her son, Tim, and together, they decided that Jazzy—a 2-year-old beagle-basenji mix— was the one. “A couple of months later, I began volunteering at the Humane Society too, and I can’t sing the praises of dog ownership enough, and what rescuing an animal can do for you. I’ve had Jazzy for three years now. She really has changed my life: She pines for me when I’m not there.” Jazzy also led to a great adventure that Velten currently is

LN PETS undertaking: She is riding a bike across the country, from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida, to raise money for the Humane Society of Missouri’s Spay It Forward Campaign. As we went to press, she was more than halfway to her destination, and 75 percent of the way to her $10,000 fundraising goal. The almost 3,000-mile trip was dubbed Tour de Tails, and combines Velten’s personal goal of visiting all 50 states with a cause she has grown to care deeply about. “I think Jazzy is going to be fine while I’m gone; my husband (Jim) will take good care of her,” she said in an interview before departing. “We would like to use the funding for a low-cost neutering program for the animals. I’ve been trying to educate about the animal overpopulation, and all the animals who are born through no fault of their own, and we have to be the voices for them.” Traveling with a group that includes a close friend, Velten says, “The going is tough, yet wonderful. I miss my family, but I am loving the experience from morning to night. The group has become a new family, and our causes that we are riding for remain close to our hearts.” Though she’s enjoying the trip, Velten is eager to get back to her family and Jazzy, who she says has made retirement much more exciting. “She slowly but surely has become part of our family. She’s been easy— you can just tell she’s so grateful to be rescued,” Velten says. “She was part of a hoarding rescue, and there was quite a variety of animals. She was very, very shy, and not at all aggressive... (When she first came home) I would keep the kennel door open; and at first, she would want to just stay in the kennel. Eventually, she would come out and feel like a part of the family, and then I would find her on top of my table, eating out of the cereal bowl!” Velten and her husband enjoy every achievement, such as the first time that Jazzy ‘found her bark,’ after she’d been with them for six months. “One day, she was sitting on the porch, and I heard this Woof!, and I said, Oh, my God, she said something! Truly, it’s like having a little kid; we’ve come from raising three children to this dog, and she has brought so much joy.” Editor’s Note: To donate to Gail Velten’s Tour de Tails fundraiser, visit hsmo.org, or follow her progress at the Tour de Tails page on Facebook.

For residents who love to garden themselves, The Gatesworth creates a space for them to order their favorite plants and flowers. “They can enjoy taking care of the gardens themselves or having us take care of the plants for them,” Montrey says. The gardens are another way The Gatesworth helps residents feel at home, Montrey notes. “So many of our residents used to have beautiful gardens of their own. “THE BIGGEST THING IS TO BE CLEAR WITH YOUR ADVISERS AND TO ASK QUESTIONS. IF QUESTIONS GO UNANSWERED, IT JUST LEAVES (CLIENTS) WITH WORRY. THE CLIENTS SHOULD ALWAYS KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THEIR INVESTMENTS.”

Peace of Mind-What a Gift!

NATHAN SEE, Plaza Advisory Group

for their needs, reduce taxation on investments, and help them pass assets to their heirs. Nathan See of Plaza Advisory Group and Matt Witte of Renaissance Financial both recommend clients meet with their advisers at least annually. These annual meetings should consist of open dialogue about the progress of the client’s goals, as well as going over their retirement portfolio. See says clients also should meet with their advisers in the case of life-changing events like a death in the family. “The biggest thing is to be clear with your advisers and to ask questions,” See says. “If questions go unanswered, it just leaves them with worry. The clients should always know what’s going on with their investments.” Witte advises that clients should always be aware of the risk level of their portfolio, and whether it reflects the level of risk they’re willing to take. Witte says there are three main mistakes he sees clients making. One is retiring too early. “We’re all living longer in this day and age,” he says. “I see people getting bored easily if they are used to an active lifestyle previously. If you retire too early, the money can get thin very quickly.” Secondly, he notes that retiring before being eligible for Medicare benefits can be an issue because of the cost of health insurance. Finally, Witte says he is seeing individuals or couples bringing high mortgage balances into retirement. “That can be a problem because mortgage payments are fixed costs, and the fixed income as a salaried employee is suddenly gone due to retirement.” For his part, See cautions retirees about taking their social security at an early age and about the way they manage their taxes in their retirements. “There are certain tips and tricks they can do down the road, however,” See explains, adding that regularly consulting with advisers is key to security and peace of mind.

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Hope on the Horizon

‌M

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

ORE THAN 4.4 MILLION Americans may be losing their sight by 2050, according to a recent report issued by Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health and safety organization. The figures are based on anticipated increases in the elderly population and the number of people older than 50 who have agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). Currently, AMD affects more than 2 million Americans and is the leading cause of vision loss in older people. However, there is hope. “Progress is being made in many aspects of AMD,” says Dr. P. Kumar Rao, a Washington University retina specialist. “We are looking into the origins of this problem, and our studies incorporate a range of approaches. The Washington

University Retina Service is looking at the molecular basis of this disease and developing new targets of therapy. Additionally, we are looking at the current medications available; and trying to find the most beneficial methods and combinations of treatments for the various types, and especially those forms of wet macular degeneration that may stop responding to initial treatments. Lastly, we are participating in clinical trials with new medications to treat this disorder.” Research into the interactions between the aging immune system and macular degeneration is underway in the Washington University lab of Rao’s colleague, Dr. Rajendra Apte. Other studies also are in progress. “We have looked at our patients who have failed one form of therapy and then switched to another form of treatment,” Rao says. “We have noted a response to the second agent and have noted also that the combination of a special form of laser treatment and injected medications may have additional benefits. And we are enrolling patients into clinical trials with new medications to treat this disease.” Dr. Nancy Holekamp, director of retina services at Pepose Vision Institute, also is actively involved in research that may lead to new treatments for AMD. “Wet AMD is when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid and blood, hence the term ‘wet,’ ” she explains. “Wet AMD can lead to legal blindness within days or weeks, if left untreated. However, fewer people are losing vision from wet AMD, thanks to injections of a class of drugs into the eye that converts the wet AMD to dry AMD. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment for dry AMD, and it can lead to legal blindness slowly over many months to years. Thus, if a person has even dry AMD long enough, they will lose vision due to the disease.” Holekamp is enrolling patients for trials of new drugs that may prove to be effective agents to slow the progression of dry AMD; and thus, prevent vision loss long-term. Another potential treatment, also being studied by Holekamp and others, involves the use of an implantable miniature telescope. “This is really cool because it’s the world’s smallest Galilean telescope,” Holekamp explains. The intervention is being tested in people who have advanced dry AMD, are legally blind and have not undergone cataract surgery. “They undergo a cataract surgery where we take their cloudy lens out and, rather than put in a lens implant that everyone else gets, we put a telescope in their eye. It improves their vision by magnifying images.” Early diagnosis and treatment are important to slowing the progression of AMD, and not smoking, controlling blood pressure and talking with your eye doctor about multivitamins may help reduce risk. “Ten years ago, we did not have very good treatments for macular degeneration,” Rao says. “Today, through the work of dedicated researchers and public support, we have much better therapies.” And with the ongoing work of local researchers, even better treatments may be on the horizon.

‌EUROPEAN TREND WATCH 2015 From the Netherlands and France to Spain and Portugal, Europe is experiencing a surge in young, creative talent that is pushing and stretching the boundaries of modern furniture design and interiors. In fact, some of the European resources featured here (Koket and Delightfull) were edgy enough to get their unconventional décor on the set of the blockbuster movie, Fifty Shades of Grey. Now, thanks to increasingly global nature of design — and the power of the Internet— those pieces and more are just a few clicks away.

DESIGN BY NANCY ROBINSON

Homefront: Design for Modern Living by Windsor Smith could turn out to be the best home investment you’ll make this year. Truly one of the outstanding titles in the interior design field for 2015—or any year, for that matter— S m i t h ’s long-awaited book is no mere retros p e c t ive o f her design work over the years. Nor is it merely a pretty coffee table book filled with lovely pictures, although the tome is chock-full. Rather, Smith’s first book details the thinking of a designer who is willing to move beyond convention. She is a modern-minded traditionalist, whose approach to elegant interiors stems from a core belief in the home as an active support structure—and not just refuge from— demanding daily routines. To that end, her glamorous rooms are both practical and deeply personalized. Forging a unique blend of old and new, Smith designs with the traditions and rituals in mind that encourage human connections in an increasingly distracted, technology-driven world. Family dinner, game time, cocktail hour… she envisions spaces for all of these activities, designed with an easy-going flair and unbuttoned elegance, like a taffeta dress worn with bare feet. Chapters share Smith’s philosophy for rethinking traditional rooms, along with her design tips for achieving luxury in a new age. The book is filled with advice, including when to repurpose a neglected dining room, why contemporary pieces belong next to heirlooms, and how to design an attractive bar to serve and enjoy a proper aperitif. In short, Homefront gives readers the vision and savvy to reclaim their home and remake it to suit modern living. “I want to knock down conventions and open up rooms so they work for the way we live now,” Smith writes in her introduction. “I don’t aspire to create beautiful rooms for people, as much as I want to change the way we live in them.” Named by Veranda as one of the top 25 design influencers, Smith has created iconic homes for leaders in the entertainment and business worlds. She has a wide array of licenses, including furniture, fabric, lighting, decorative accessories, rugs and wall decor for brands like Kravet, Century Furniture, Arteriors, Boyd Lighting and Soicher Marin. Smith also pioneered her inventive online decorating service, Windsor Smith Room in a Box.

This rich, ornate space revels in a riotous confluence of European, African and Indian cultural elements, and is typical of Smith’s approach.

Windsor Smith RIGHT: Take a tip from the designer and create a little pomp and ceremony around the cocktail hour with an attractive, well-appointed bar. “The civilized hour of the cocktail is a time-honored tradition that lends itself to a perfect, personalized ceremony,” she says. “By deliberately calling a halt to rushing around, and taking the time for one perfect preprandial glass, you take the tempo down a little and allow some time to pause and reflect on the day.”

ITUATED ON MORE THAN AN acre of land in Ladue, this brick beauty resembles the grandeur of an English estate. Crack open a hardboiled egg in the updated breakfast room. Then, follow the brick path outside for a leisurely stroll around the landscaped yard. Take a cup of tea out on the stone patio, which will keep you cool come summertime with two ceiling fans. Conduct matters of the utmost importance from the sundrenched front room, with windows flanked by built-in bookcases. As dinner fast approaches, utilize the vast granite counter space in the kitchen with two islands at your disposal. You even can choose to dine early and enjoy the view from the dining room’s bay window. Then, invite friends over for a nightcap served from your wet bar in the recreation room. Serenade the group with the perfect playlist throughout the home over the wired sound system. And after the evening winds down, slip into your jetted tub or rainfall shower to relax before bedtime. Live a lavish lifestyle in this manor fit for a lord or lady.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my clients and friends for their business, amazing reviews, kind words, continuous referrals and continued loyalty. I have the best job in the world, and the pleasure has been all mine in getting to know each of you and your families while helping you realize your goals of home-ownership, for over 29 years. I look forward to successfully helping many more families in 2015 and beyond! Sincerely, Jill If you would like to see more reviews, visit my Zillow and business Facebook pages! Thank you! ★★★★★ We have moved 7 times throughout the Midwest and east coast over the years and Jill Kelly was without doubt the best realtor we have had. She was our realtor when we bought our house in St. Louis and was our listing agent when sold it due to an out of state transfer. She was meticulous with details and made the buying and selling of our home a stressless task. – Betsy and Paul Smentek ★★★★★ Jill has served as my family’s real estate broker of record since 1988. During this time, Jill has bought and sold properties for us in Webster Groves, Ladue, Kirkwood, and the City of St. Louis. We only use the services of Jill for one primary reason (in addition to her fabulous personality): results. The more challenging the property, the more excited Jill becomes. I can assure you that Jill Kelly will exceed all of your expectations- that’s a promise. – Frank F. Kling ★★★★★ Jill has help me three times in the last year and a half, selling a very unique house in Creve Coeur, finding temporary housing and then a year later finding a house which would met my wife’s special needs. I gave her a 5 star rating only because you don’t have a 7 or 8 star rating. She is excellent at follow up and determining your requirements and is a true representative for your interest and needs. Over the last 8 years I have worked with 4 different realtors but when it came to selling and buying my last two homes I would only call Jill. She also helped me after the sale of my house to find temporary housing until I bought my next house. – Lew Kestner

★★★★★ I have purchased and sold two homes with Jill. I cannot say enough about her professionalism, along with being a kind and caring person. She is so knowledgeable of the market here, and has never refused to help with real estate related issues. Our experiences with one another started in 1989 and continue to date. – Sandy Hermann ★★★★★ Jill Kelly is a dedicated real estate agent who works hard for her clients. Jill LISTENED to us and also advised us in ways that made our house sell quickly after she listed it. We were impressed with her energy, honesty, and professionalism. She also works well with other agents to make the deal go smoothly. Jill sold our house and found the next one for us. She did the same for several of our relatives! – Karen and Ed Hempstead ★★★★★ Jill makes it easy and gives it to you straight. You’ll know exactly what you need to do in order to sell your house. Whether it is knowing what things you’ll have to replace vs. repair, or where to get the best mortgage rates, Jill guides you through it expertly. We’ve used her twice and recommended her to all our friends and family. I regularly hear horror stories of well-meaning agents that don’t know the business well enough to make sure you get the best deal possible. When I tell those people about my experiences with Jill, they can’t believe my experience was so easy. Moving is stressful enough without worrying about the competency of your agent. Do yourself a favor and let an honest and forthright lady who knows the business well help you through the hard parts. – Guy Medaris

Cait Donohue

When Cait Donohue’s oldest child

started looking into colleges, she realized her job as a full-time parent had an expiration date. To avoid becoming a ‘helicopter mom,’ she got her realtor’s license and several designations and began selling homes. Donohue found that the industry suited her well. After giving up being a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, a library mom, a playground mom, and many more important titles, she found a lot of time opened up for her to succeed in the business. Her tech-savvy style impressed many, and she even trained agents at her first brokerage on social media marketing. Astoria-Megler Bridge

F

OUNDED IN 1811 AND NAMED AFTER New York financier, John Jacob Astor, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. It remains today a quaint town steeped in maritime history and land expedition lore, beautifully balancing its storied past with contemporary restoration. The epitome of this effort is the Cannery Pier Hotel, built on 100-year-old pilings on the site of an historic salmon cannery. Exposed beams and wooden trusses set the tone for this luxury boutique property, with unparalleled views of the mighty Columbia River. As viewed from your Jacuzzi tub, you’re so close to the majestic tankers and cruise ships that you feel like you can reach out and touch them. You’ll have all the usual amenities such as cozy bathrobes and breakfast buffet; but where else can you get complimentary wine, cheese and smoked salmon, antique chauffeured cars, vintage bicycles for meandering around town, 8 p.m. cookies, singing sea lions beneath your window, sea gulls perching on your balcony to wish you a good morning, and red lights of the Astoria-Megler Bridge twinkling against a black night sky? And what a bridge this is! At its highest point, it’s 200 feet above the river. The main span is 1,232 feet in length; and at 4.1 miles, it has the longest ‘continuous truss’ in the nation. Completed in 1966, critics called it the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ Today, it connects almost 2 million vehicles a year from Astoria to the state of Washington. It’s one of those bridges that upon approach, knots form in one’s stomach, and the hands on the steering wheel beginning to shake: When shrouded in thick Continued on page 86

Astoria Column

Continued from page 85 fog, as we experienced it, it creates an optical illusion of the last mile or so going up into the clouds. Needless to say, with acrophobia kicking in, we did not make the trip. We quickly dubbed it ‘the bridge to heaven,’ and stayed far away! There is lots to explore here: The Liberty Theater is an example of a 1920s vaudeville motion-picture palace; while the Columbia River Maritime Museum features marine transportation from the days of dugout canoes to the present, and a chance to walk the bridge of a WWII warship and take the helm of a tugboat. At Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark wintered in 1806 during their expedition, walk through the recreated encampment to see that trail of these brave pioneers. See The Goonies House, an actual home at 368 38th St. immortalized in the ’80s cult-favorite adventure film about a group of kids and their adventures in attempting to save their home from demolition. The Captain George Flavel House Museum is a Queen Anne-style mansion restored in its Victorian splendor. Seek out Columbia River Eco Tours for a half-day or day-long adventure on the mighty Columbia River. And last, but not least, see the imposing Astoria Column, towering over Astoria on the highest hill with spectacular views of the city, rivers, forests, mountains and Pacific Ocean—a bona fide reward for the 164-stair climb! Known for its brewpubs, be sure to stop at Rogue Public House, the Wet Dog Cafe, Buoy Beer Company and Fort George Brewery + Public House. Try Blue Scorcher Bakery Café for breakfast or lunch. If you’re in the mood for something other than pub fare (although it’s all quite good), there’s Bridgewater Bistro, right next to the Cannery Pier Hotel, for regional cuisine. Also, we recommend Clemente’s, which is owned and operated by a fourth-generation fishing family in downtown Astoria; Baked Alaska, for great views and delicious broiled oysters; Bowpicker Fish & Chips, for the albacore tuna that’s lightly beerbattered and fried to perfection; and Silver Salmon Grille, for salmon every which way. Astoria truly is a historically hip town, not to be missed.

Attired Out SPRING IS FINALLY HERE—FINALLY. SPRING can mean a lot of different things to people. It can mean Opening Day, or gardening time, or spring cleaning or golf season. If you are a teenage girl, however, spring means one thing and one thing only: prom. Now, I’m not going to get into the pseudo-stigmatizing popularity dynamics of prom—trust me, no one understands better than I the angst associated with high school social events—but rather, I’d like to discuss the clearly scarring effects of prom parenting. First item on the agenda: the dress. Cranky is a junior, and while this is not her first prom, it apparently is the single-most significant attire-dependent event in the history of mankind. Kate Middleton’s wedding dress did not matter this much. And, much like the royal wedding, prom is a series of wardrobe changes. There’s the prom itself, the after-prom party, and then the unofficial after-party breakfast/ no-good-cancome-of-it event, each involving a different dress. Katie Perry has fewer wardrobe changes during a concert. The journey of a thousand malls begins with a single step, so let’s start with the prom dress itself. There are several guidelines: some schoolimposed, some self-imposed, regarding the length, cut, color, etc. Once you’ve separated the

Debbie Baldwin

TANGENTIAL THINKER wheat off the chaff, you apparently are left with 4,382,000 dresses from which to choose. There are boutiques, online shopping, the mall, vintage stores, friends’ closets and more. Honestly, we’d all be better off if someone just unleashed the girls into a dress department, Filene’s Basement-style and said, Pick a dress and you’re done! Instead, Cranky is haunted by the White Whale: the perfect dress. It’s crippling really; sailing in a sea of lovely dresses, tortured by the notion that the perfect dress is somewhere out there. Prom is in a week. A choice will be made. A dress will be worn. We will ponder, shop, try on, return and exchange; but in the end, Cranky will go to the dance looking lovely and hopefully feeling good about herself. She’ll find a dress, and I can relax. I mean, it’s prom. What else is there to worry about?

REVIEWS THEATER REVIEW BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

Serena

MARITAL HISS RATING: 3 out of 10

I

F A MOVIE BOMBS AT THE theater and no one is there to see it, does it make a sound? Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are poised to become this generation’s Bogart and Bacall. They have more than a handful of Oscar nominations— and a couple of statues—between them. Now, rumors of a reallife romance are only making their box-office draw stronger. Unfortunately, if the best thing people can say about this latest effort is that it’s forgettable, that will be a win. I won’t go too far down the rabbit hole with the plot here: Suffice it to say, this story has all the makings of a Mexican soap opera—or an American one, for that matter: betrayal, infidelity, corruption, illegitimate children, mayhem and murder. George (Cooper) owns a timber business in depression-era North Carolina. He meets Serena (Lawrence) while visiting his sister one day, and the attraction is instant. They marry, and Serena becomes a wife and a partner in George’s struggling business. Maybe they got married too soon, or maybe they both are unstable, unlikable, unethical people. It doesn’t really matter why things take a wrong turn; because in the end, nobody really cares. To describe this movie as unwatchable is generous. Neither Cooper nor Lawrence seem at ease with the painfully stilted and shapeless characters they portray. If these were the days of Bogie and Bacall, I would have guessed the studio had them at gunpoint to finish out a contract. Stay home and watch Whiplash.

Get Hard

FALLING FLAT RATING: 5 out of 10

A

LL KIDDING ASIDE (A theme in this movie apparently), Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell probably are two of the funniest men working in film today. Combine their inherent comic abilities and their disparate proportions—Ferrell is 6-foot-3, and towers over Hart, who is 5-foot-4—and you have the makings for comedy gold. I’m assuming that’s what the producers thought, as well, because it appears no one bothered with a script. Ferrell plays James King, a finance guru wrongfully accused and convicted of fraud. He has 30 days before his hard time starts; so like any normal, rich, intelligent man, he hires his black car-washer, Darnell (Hart), to teach him how to survive on the inside. Darnell has never been to prison, but fakes it to earn the cash James offers. The next hour is basically one long genitalia joke until James turns his attention to figuring out who’s framing him. Personally, I would do the genitalia stuff second, but that’s just me. The biggest problem here is that the movie is OK. It’s not horrible or completely offensive, nor is it Old School or Wedding Crashers. We have come to expect so much from Ferrell—even his stinker movies are pretty funny—and Hart is the perfect foil. So when you sit in this movie and can count on one hand the number of times you laugh, it’s disappointing, especially when it’s the same joke repeated over and over and over again.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood BY MARK BRETZ

THE STORY The Repertory Company of the Music Hall Royale invites you to its production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood in this year of our Lord, 1892, in the city of London, the center of her majesty Queen Victoria’s British empire. Being the conclusion of Mr. Charles Dickens’ last and unfinished novel of the same title, The Mystery of Edwin Drood asks us, the audience, to concoct a proper ending for the author’s tale of young Drood, betrothed at birth to Miss Rosa Bud. In these daring times, however, Edwin and Rosa have decided that they will forsake that bond arranged by their families because they aren’t really in love. Rosa is lusted after by her music teacher, John Jasper, who, in turn, is Edwin’s uncle. The kindly Rev. Crisparkle once loved Rosa’s mother, and the odd Princess Puffer, queen of an opium den, seems to have some connection, as well. And then there are the Ceylonese siblings, Helena and Neville Landless, who bring both the charm and mystery of the Orient. When Edwin disappears one stormy Christmas Eve, suspicion is cast on all of these nebulous characters, each of whom is portrayed by a working member of the Music Hall Royale’s Repertory Company, all introduced to us by its genial chairman, Mr. William Cartwright. The cast is a motley bunch, the story is sinister, and the outcome is left to the audience. What could possibly go wrong?

COMPANY: Stray Dog Theatre VENUE: Tower Grove Abbey, 2336 Tennessee Ave. DATES: April 10-11; 15-18 TICKETS: $20-$25; 865-1995 or StrayDog Theatre.org RATING: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews.com

HIGHLIGHTS Stray Dog Theatre has revived Rupert Holmes’ 1985 multiple Tony Award-winning musical with a clever, ingratiating production that is filled with verve and panache, under the direction of Justin Been. Gerry Love is a most delightful chairman, regaling one and all with intricate details, not only about the story, but also about his free-spirited bunch of blokes who engage in all sorts of tomfoolery while acting out Mr. Dickens’ tale and our own denouement. Michael Juncal serves ably as the amiable and dutiful stage manager, James Throttle. As for the cast of the show-within-a-show, noted male impersonator Alice Nutting, in the guise of our stoic title character, is played with proper stiff upper lip by Heather Matthews. Her gentlemanly Edwin pairs off in a romantic duet or two with the fair Rosa Bud, portrayed touchingly by the company’s Deirdre Peregrine, as essayed by Stray Dog’s capable Eileen Engel. Since the audience votes three different times — on the real identity of sleuth Dick Datchery, the killer of Edwin Drood (if he died), and the two characters who embrace romance for the musical’s ‘happy ending’ — the cast is left with exhaustive possibilities in the second act. No matter. They are up for the challenges, as evidenced on opening night.

Congratulations to the folks at Schlafly: Their Kolsch won the Washington Post’s Beer Madness contest for Best American Craft Beer. The tournament-style competition featured brackets ala college basketball’s March Madness. The second-place finisher was Kansas City’s own Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale. Go, Missouri! The massive neon peacock sign outside Peacock Loop Diner in the Delmar Loop won first place in the international Signs of the Times competition. The 11-foot-wide, 1,800-pound sign has more than 680 feet of neon tubing, creating a peacock that fans out its neon feathers in sequence more than 200 times per hour. The sign was designed by Hope Edwards, based on a concept by Joe Edwards, with contributions from Kiku Obata & Co.; and was built by Piros Signs. Area catering concern Butler’s Pantry has been racking up the awards of late. The St. Louis Wedding Awards selected Butler’s Pantry as Caterer of the Year, while the International Special Events Society (ISES) presented Butler’s Pantry with its 2015 Louie Awards for Best Food Presentation, and Best Event Produced for a Non-Profit Organization (budget $75,000 and over). Congrats! KYLE MATHIS, bar manager at Taste in the CWE, had his cocktail creations Heart of Ruby and Surfboard Fizz written up in Wine Enthusiast. Well done! Kudos to St. Louis’ own Defiance Whiskey, which was recently awarded a bronze medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and also took home a silver medal at the American Craft Spirits Association event in Austin. It’s been announced that The Wood Cask will be taking over the spot at 10332 Manchester Road in Kirkwood that used to be home to Eleven Mile House. Look for a debut sometime later this spring. The preliminary menu is available for perusal at thewoodcask.com. Sad news to report from Benton Park: The popular Luvy Duvy’s Cafe has closed its doors.

Bricktop’s

Sample the Feast! PLAZA FRONTENAC IS HOME TO SOME FINE restaurants; and in recent years, several freestanding eateries have set up shop outside around the mall. The most recent of these is Bricktop’s. This national chain is known for upscale food and ambience—a perfect combo that fits in well with the other area restaurants. The interior of Bricktop’s evokes that of a highend steakhouse, with low lights, dark colors and spacious booths. It also sports an open kitchen, one of our favorite restaurant features. There also is a separate bustling bar area, complete with flatscreen TVs for those who want to pop in for drinks and to catch the game. We settled in with an order of the Tempura Shrimp ($14) and Deviled Eggs & Millionaire’s Bacon ($11). The shrimp portion was more than generous, and the plethora of golden popcorn shrimp nuggets were coated with a sweet-andsour sauce. We paired this dish with a glass of Whispering Angel rosé ($11), which brought out some of the flavors in that sauce, as well as cutting through the richness of the batter. The deviled eggs were fairly straight-ahead takes on the backyard picnic classic. The bacon was perfectly cooked, with just the right balance of crispiness and chewiness. The strips were coated with what tasted like a maple glaze of some sort—contrasting nicely with the rich creaminess of the whipped egg yolks. On to the mains for the evening: the Chilean Sea Bass ($30) and the entree-sized Palm Beach Salad

($20). The bass is a hearty fillet, about 8 ounces or so, coated with a light panko crust. A ginger sauce gives this dish a sweet and tangy Asian flavor. The fish itself expertly was sauteed and literally melted in our mouths. We especially appreciated the preparation of the vegetables served alongside—they were expertly steamed to give them a bit of crunch without being soggy, and the flavors weren’t covered up with sauces or glazes and such. The salad was a fairly modest portion, perhaps to assuage the guilt of indulging in such a rich dish. Those who tend toward salads to cut back on calories, beware! This dish has a creamy layer of guacamole, followed by one of tender lump crab meat, then a third of tomatoes, all topped with egg and dressed with a poached shrimp remoulade— definitely one decadent salad! Service was uber-prompt. Our dishes were perfectly timed and we had at least four servers touch the table during our visit, so we never had to worry about getting lost in the shuffle. Because of Bricktop’s location outside the mall, there’s plenty of parking to be had, and the proximity to I-64 makes it easy to get to. Bricktop’s also offers lunch service, a good way to impress those important clients, as well as a Sunday brunch menu. Now that the weather seems to have finally switched to springtime temps, we imagine the spacious patio area will see plenty of action. 10342 Clayton Road, 567-6300, bricktops.com

LN COOKS

INGREDIENTS:

Not-Your-Average Mac & Cheese BY CHEF JOHN JOHNSON

Q: Chef, I am looking for a great macaroni and cheese recipe that will be a perfect pairing to steaks on the grill. The average mac & cheese just won’t do. Do you have a recipe that you could share? A: Summertime is just around the corner, and I just cleaned up my grill last weekend so we can start grilling out. There are two types of grillers: gas or wood. I personally love to

cook with wood—you can’t beat the sound of great steaks sizzling on the open grill. We have a Lobster Macaroni and Cheese on our menu at 1904 Steak House that I use at home. I finish mine on the grill in small individual pots, but you could easily finish it in the oven. Please enjoy the recipe below, and I’d love to hear what you think. It takes a little extra prep work, but is quick to put together.

4 c cavatappi pasta, cooked 1 c heavy cream 4 T Gruyere cheese, shredded 3 T + 1 T Parmesan cheese, grated 1 T mascarpone cheese 1/2 c lobster meat, cooked salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: Heat cream to simmer; add lobster meat and pasta, and reduce sauce by half. Add Gruyere, Parmesan and mascarpone cheeses (except for 1 tablespoon of Parmesan) and stir until it is smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Place in small pot or bowl, sprinkle reserve Parmesan cheese on top, and bake in 400-degree oven until cheese browns. Note: Cavatappi pasta is a long spiral macaroni; you can easily substitute regular macaroni, if you wish.

Chef John Johnson is executive chef at River City Casino. For questions or recipe requests, email him at John.Johnson@rivercity.com.

Another tour stop is a European-style home in Ladue, decorated by designers from Savvy Surrounding Style, that features antiques, faux finishes and custom window treatments. Proceeds from the Home Design Tour benefit the Junior League’s training and community programs, notes Allie Chang-Ray, president of Junior League of St. Louis. “Since 1914, the Junior League of St. Louis has been committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers,” she says. “Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable, and our members devote more than 10,000 volunteer hours each year to our community initiatives focused on women and children.” Lavigne notes that expanding from a focus on kitchens to the whole home allows participants to see many more aspects of design and renovation. “They can get a look at overall interior design trends and also learn about the building and remodeling process,” she says. A Toast of the Tour VIP Party will occur at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 17, at the KDR Design Showroom. The Interior Design Center of St. Louis is hosting the party, which will feature a silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a signature cocktail.
