Take, for example, Sophia “Sassy” Saleeby. On p. 20, managing editor Ashley Klein speaks with the Ladue Horton Watkins High School senior and spelling bee champion about her project to bring resource equity to metro area spelling competitors.
And don’t miss the story on p. 30 of how the loyal customers of one of St. Louis’ favorite boutiques partly inspired its owner to pivot to a brand new interior design venture.
Interested in the innovation going on locally in cannabis? Associate editor Charlotte Renner gives her go-to guide to the cannabis supper clubs destined to be the next big thing on p. 14.
Speaking of innovation, read about how Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s “Nomad Tour” is enhancing our community’s access to world-class music on p. 58.
Can’t get enough of the arts? On p. 59, copy editor and staff writer Madeleine Ackerburg shares an inside look of Saint Louis Art Museum’s latest showstopping exhibition, “Age of Armor,” as well as all the details you should know before you go.
Happy reading!

Spring is finally here – and it’s the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Playing outside is a great way for families to spend time together and also has the added benefit of boosting your child’s health. Research shows that more outdoor time for kids is linked to healthier weight, better eyesight, less depression and anxiety and improved motor development. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children get at least one hour of physical activity every day. Spending time outdoors, whether during sports or unstructured play with friends, is a great way to achieve this recommendation.
The benefits of playing outside extend beyond just physical and emotional health – spending time outdoors also gives kids the chance to
explore nature and take a break from screens. In our increasingly technological world with constant stimulation and sound, the quiet beauty of our natural world can help our kids get a muchneeded “brain break.”
Here are some tips on how to enjoy the outdoors as a family:
Visit a park: St. Louis is home to many beautiful parks and best of all, they’re free! Bring a frisbee or soccer ball, pack a picnic or plan on enjoying the playground to burn off some energy.
Take a family hike: There are many hiking trails in our community that range from short, paved walks to more challenging, off-the-beatenpath trails. Some of my family’s favorites include Powder Valley Nature Center and Castlewood State Park.
Explore the zoo: Saint Louis Zoo is fun for the whole family. Not only are the animals and
exhibits interesting and educational, but the zoo is also huge, giving you ample opportunity to get your steps in!
Go on a nature walk: My kids love doing nature scavenger hunts where spotting various local plants and animals earns different points. Be creative with assigning point values. The person with the most points at the end wins!
Ride your bike: This can be done in your neighborhood or on a bike path such as Grant’s Trail or around Creve Coeur Lake. Make sure to wear a helmet!
Enjoy the beauty that is springtime in St. Louis. And don’t forget to bring sunscreen, hats and plenty of water! ln

In late February, guests made their way to Hilton St. Louis Frontenac to attend UCP Heartland’s “Follow Your Heart” gala and auction. Before dinner, attendees mingled, enjoying cocktails and music by a trio from Stand Up Productions. They also bid on a wide selection of silent auction items and entered a raffle for a Louis Vuitton purse. After dinner, in the main ballroom, guests gathered for a short program during which Brian and Nina Murphy were presented with the Heart of the Community award. “UCP Heartland has played an important part in the well-being of our family for over a decade,” the Murphys stated. “More importantly, it has served thousands of other families with differing abilities in our community.” Rene Knott served as emcee for the evening and auctioneer for the live auction.
– JENNIFER BIERLING AND JEFF EICHHOLZ CO-CHAIRSis evening, we celebrate those living with di ering abilities and ensure they have the support necessary not only to live in our community, but also to thrive. e gala is our largest annual fundraising event, which ensures continued programming for more than 900 individuals throughout St. Louis and mid-Missouri, as well as expanding services to meet our community’s growing needs.

In the South Grand dining district, a prominent corner spot recently became home to a new family-run bar and restaurant.
La Crazy Margarita debuted on Feb. 16 in the space previously occupied by Alta Calle, which closed permanently after the pandemic.
The fledgling business, which will soon be neighbor up-and-coming bar concept Kenny’s Upstairs, inherited all the festive decor from its predecessors. The approximately 100-seat space features colorful walls and furniture, including decorative tabletops and carved wooden chairs imported from Mexico.
According to Romel Mayahua – who co-owns La Crazy Margarita with his stepfather and fellow first-time business owner, Benito Mendieta Rodriguez – their concept has all the makings of a great neighborhood hangout spot, complete with a lengthy menu full of classic Tex-Mex favorites and a variety of fruity beverages to wash them all down.
Visitors who have stepped into La Crazy Margarita during its debut month of service, however, will notice one major component missing from the equation: the margaritas themselves. Due to delays in obtaining a liquor license, Mayahua says he doesn’t know how much longer they’ll have to wait until they can offer their signature drinks. “St. Louis City seems to be understaffed, and progress is slow at the moment,” he says.
Despite the setback, the duo decided to open doors to get the ball rolling on their dream
drinking and dining destination. They developed their ideas over the last six months, eager to share the results of their efforts. “We couldn’t really hold back and stay still; we needed to open,” Mayahua says.
“I want people to be able to relax, try the food and see how delicious it is,” Rodriguez says. “After that, we’re just waiting for a chance to serve our drinks so all these different flavors can finally come together.”
According to Mayahua, Rodriguez has always wanted to own his own restaurant. “He came to the states from Tlaxcala 15 years ago to follow and pursue his dream. He always wanted to start a business and do something different.”
To that end, Rodriguez developed the restaurant’s recipes with his wife, Juana, based on more than eight years of experience cooking professionally at Mexican-American restaurants in the St. Louis area. “We have everything from burritos and fajitas to chimichangas, tortas, street tacos and street corn,” Mayahua says.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the kitchen also cooks up traditional Mexican fare to offer a taste of family favorites. Rotating specials will include dishes such as posole with lettuce, pork, radish, corn, peas and guajillo; mixiotes, or chicken breast cooked in the outer layer of maguey leaves with guajillo sauce, served with rice and beans; and caldo de siete mares, a soup with seven different types of seafood.
Mayahua’s regular go-to is the Burrito Loco stuffed with rice, beans, chicken, steak and shrimp, topped with cheese sauce and
avocado. “Everything about it is delicious,” he says. Rodriguez recommends the pollo fundido, which features grilled chicken with bell peppers, onions and melted cheese. Another highlight is the Quesadilla Tlaxcala, a dish named after his hometown that features a housemade corn tortilla that is grilled and stuffed with cheese, chopped mushroom and flor de calabaza (zucchini flowers), served with guacamole salad and sour cream.
Behind the bar, Rodriguez envisions a beverage program with 15 different flavors of margaritas in a variety of serving vessels including fish bowlsized glasses filled with “things like spicy mango, guava, jalapeño, drinks with fresh fruit and a lot of organic ingredients.” For now, drink options include fresh pineapple agua fresca, jamaica, horchata and Mexican sodas.
Mayahua remains optimistic that all the pieces will continue to fall into place. For now, the duo hopes that their savory fare will keep visitors coming back for more.
“Everybody’s looking for the drinks. Our customers are just waiting for an update on the liquor license,” Mayhua says. “We feel very confident with our dishes and we’ll feel much more confident when we can finally get the alcohol going. We can’t wait to serve them.”
La Crazy Margarita is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
