EDITOR’S NOTE EVEN WITH A HANDFUL OF ST. LOUIS LANDMARKS STILL STANDING 110 years later, it’s still hard to imagine the grandeur of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, better known to us as the 1904 World’s Fair. Beginning in the spring of that year, more than 20 million people from all corners of the globe would show up at our doorstep, ready to experience the world at their fingertips through our city. What was it like, you ask? One only needs to stroll in and around Forest Park for an inkling: Cass Gilbert’s Palace of Fine Arts now stands as the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Smithsonian Flight Cage exhibit now serves as the bird cage at the Saint Louis Zoo, and the fair’s administrative headquarters is the current Brookings Hall at Washington University. In addition, we’ll get a taste of the flavors that were popularized more than a century ago. And we’ll also reconnect with some cultural groups who were part of the melting pot that came to St. Louis in 1904 and continue to thrive here today.

The Art Museum was built for the Fair. It was designed by Cass Gilbert and originally called the Palace of Fine Arts. It was the Fair’s only major display building built as a permanent structure and handed over to the city of St. Louis in 1906. Twelve metro area high-school acts brought the crowd to its feet as they poured their hearts and souls out on stage to compete for thousands of dollars in college scholarships and special prizes. The distinguished panel of judges were: David Halen, Mike Isaacson, Carl Nappa, Ken Page, Shelby Ringdahl and Phyllis Smith, star of The Office. Fox maven Mary Strauss, creator of the Teen Talent Competition, greeted the audience, along with emcee, entertainer Ben Nordstrom. First-place honors went to Donesha Buhr (Fresh Start North Academy/Circus Harmony), who performed a hula hoop routine to Overture from Chicago.

At a recent health fair someone asked the question - “how do I prevent lower back pain?”

Up to 80% of the population will experience lower back pain in their lifetime leading to approximately 300, 000 spine surgeries every year in the United States. The costs can be staggering when taking into account lost work productivity, medical care, and disability. While maintaining healthy habits for spine maintenance begins with our diet and exercise, there are plenty of other helpful habits. Prolonged inactivity (usually longer than two days of bed rest) can be harmful rather than helpful. Daily stretching with proper maintenance of posture, lifting techniques and wearing low heel shoes help prevent back pain. Adequate sleep on a firm mattress and smoking cessation may also be beneficial. These are some simple, yet effective steps one can take. However, despite all the preventative steps, segments of the population may still experience chronic persistent lower back pain which may need specialized treatment.

Many proven conservative and interventional treatments are available for patients with intractable, uncontrolled, chronic lower back pain. These treatments may include typical anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, antidepressants (used to treat pain), anti- seizure medications (used to treat pain) and physical therapy. However, if the conservative treatments fail to provide relief, then a patient may benefit from minimally invasive and effective interventional treatments after a thorough evaluation. Interventional treatments range from simple nerve blocks, steroid injections, and more advanced injection, ablation and stimulation therapies to provide the patient with much needed relief. Interventional pain management therapies have been shown to improve pain, function and overall quality of life. Featuring a performance by The Pointer Sisters, among other surprises, proceeds from the night will benefit Operation Food Search (OFS). “We’ve had a long relationship with Operation Food Search, which works in partnership with hundreds of local food relief agencies throughout the region,” Schnuck notes. About one in every three meals provided by OFS each year comes from contributions by Schnucks Markets, says OFS executive director Sunny Schaefer. Last year alone, Schnucks provided a staggering 11 million pounds of food, or the equivalent of 6.25 million meals, she adds. “Never before in our 33-year history have so many people turned to OFS and our partner agencies because they were hungry,” Schaefer says. CHNUCKS IS NOW A HOUSEHOLD name in St. Louis—in the most intimate sense of the word—stocking area pantries with the sustenance of their everyday life. But it started out as just a single confectionery store, founded by Anna Schnuck in 1939. “It was the end of the Depression, and our family was struggling,” says Anna’s grandson, current company chairman Scott Schnuck. “It was her way to make a contribution to the family and make ends meet. It was something she knew she could do—she was a great cook, and liked to be with people.” Now in its third generation as a family-run grocer, Schnucks currently has 101 stores in five states, and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. “There aren’t many private companies who get through three generations, and there aren’t many regional family-owned grocery chains left anymore,” Schnuck says. “Our 75th anniversary

Les Dames d’Scoffier. One notable stop will be at the legendary Sarah Tyson Rorer restaurant space, which was located at the East Pavilion on Art Hill. Recognized as “the nation’s instructress of dietetics and cookery,” Rorer wrote 54 cookbooks, a domestic science column for the Ladies Home Journal, and sold her World’s Fair Souvenir Cook Book in St. Louis. Her café and cooking classes became highlights of the fair, Vaccaro says. “She was more popular than Julia Child,” Heidrich notes. The tour will return to The Restaurant at The Cheshire for the World’s Fair Dinner. Based off of authentic high-end restaurant menus from the 1904 World’s Fair, the savory, multi-course meal will begin with sliced tomatoes and clear mock green turtle soup, followed by main courses of fillet of sea bass meuniere, with cucumber salad and new potatoes, and a relish tray of celery, olives, and radishes. Next, an impressive dish of saddle of spring lamb jardinière will be served,

along with asparagus Hollandaise, golden plover with hearts of l e t t u c e , a n d Ro m a n p u n c h . Decadent desserts and coffee will cap off the elaborate meal. Last year, when Vaccaro, who also is a native St. Louisan and professional speaker, and Heidrich began to collaborate on the idea of a World’s Fair culinary tour, they knew just the chef for the job: Hale, an acclaimed culinary master and history buff. The chef says he was immediately intrigued by the thought of re-creating recipes from 100 years ago. “The World’s Fair and its food are such a big deal—and never talked about,” he notes. When Hale recalls researching the fair’s restaurants and recipes, he lights up like a kid in a candy store. He explains that he used Rorer’s recipes, as well as the menu from the Tyrolean Alps Restaurant at the fair, as the inspiration for much of the re-creation supper. In her book, Vaccaro outlines the upscale German restaurant experience of the Tyrolean Alps, conceived by August Busch and the LPE Co., underwritten by German St. Louis stockholders and fleshed out by restaurant and catering industry experts, Tony Faust of St. Louis and August Luchow of New York. rom the ice cream cone to hot dogs, hamburgers and even iced tea, the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis has long been lauded for many firsts of the food industry. While those claims mostly are myths, as local author Pam Vaccaro explains in her book, Beyond the Ice Cream Cone: The Whole Scoop on Food at the 1904 World’s Fair, St. Louis certainly served as an international stage for the jumping-off point of these food items’ popularity during that memorable early 20th century spring and summer. With ice cream cone, club sandwich or hot dog in hand, all classes of more than 20 million people from throughout the world could be seen strolling amid the 1,300-acre fair—which stretched from modern-day Forest Park through the Washington University campus to Big Bend Boulevard. “Food is the common denominator among all people—at the fair and still today,” Vaccaro says. And the World’s Fair was an exceptionally vast stage—as large as 13 Disney World Magic Kingdoms—where chefs showcased foods from their part of the globe at about 130 eateries. For the Fair’s 110th anniversary, June 14, 2014, will mark a unique homage to that historic food and culture with a World’s Fair Supper at The Restaurant at The Cheshire, prepared by executive chef Rex Hale and staff, along with a tour of Forest Park’s Art Hill. “This is a one-of-a-kind event. We want to bring the World’s Fair back—make it alive again,” notes Vaccaro, co-organizer of the tour. “And Chef Hale is cooking food that has never been done before.” This time around, the rare event will be a private tour for the local chapter of Les Dames d’Scoffier, a philanthropic group of leaders in the culinary field. But organizers say similar events may be put on for the public in the future. The inaugural tour will kick off at The Market at The Cheshire, where guests will enjoy flavored coffee—prune and banana—popular during the World’s Fair, while Vaccaro gives a presentation focused on the event’s storied history. Next, the group will travel by bus to Forest Park’s Art Hill to visit about six stations where restaurant buildings and booths at the World’s Fair once stood. Attendees will be served fair food, such as ice consommé and popcorn. “Just to stand on that ground and have Pam tell you about it is pretty thrilling,” notes Beth Heidrich, programs chair for

after a Bavarian royal palace, the elegant eatery where the upscale dined—even President Theodore Roosevelt—featured a 100-piece orchestra playing live classical music, European masterpieces hanging on the walls, and electric lighting suspended over a dining hall, as well as an outdoor veranda, with combined seating of more than 5,000.

While choosing fare for the dinner, Hale says the prevalence of fish dishes, relish trays and punch on exposition menus meant they had to be highlighted in the meal. “Chef Hale has put his own twist on everything,” Vaccaro says. And these are the types of recipes that everyone can do at home, Hale adds. Vaccaro, Hale and Heidrich all agree that food

• 1 bunch of asparagus (about 1 lb.) • 10 T unsalted butter (1 stick, plus 2 T) • 3 egg yolks • 1 T lemon juice • 1/2 t salt • Pinch of cayenne Preparation: Prep the asparagus: Break off the tough ends with your fingers. Bend the asparagus spears near the end and they will break naturally where

the spear is no longer tough. For an elegant presentation of the spears, use a vegetable peeler to peel off a very thin layer of the outer skin of the lower 2 to 3 inches of the asparagus spears. Prepare a large, shallow pan (with a cover) with a half-inch of water and a steamer rack. Prepare the Hollandaise sauce: Melt the butter in a small pot. Put the egg yolks, lemon juice, salt and cayenne into a blender. Blend the eggs for 20 to 30 seconds at medium speed until lighter in color. Turn blender down to lowest setting and slowly drizzle in the hot, melted butter while the blender is going. Continue to blend for a few seconds after all of the butter is incorporated. Taste the sauce;

Place flour in pie dish. Rinse fish; pat with paper towels. Sprinkle both sides of fish with coarse salt and freshly ground pepper. Dredge fish on both sides with flour; shake off excess. Place on platter.

• 1 T fresh lemon juice

Relish

add more salt or lemon juice, if needed. Keep warm while you are steaming the asparagus. Bring the water in your steaming pan to a boil. Place the asparagus on the steaming rack. Cover. Steam for 3 to 5 minutes, until tender, but still a little crisp. The timing depends on the thickness of the asparagus spears. Plate the asparagus. Pour Hollandaise sauce over them.

Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until oil is hot and shimmers. Add butter; quickly swirl skillet to coat. When foam subsides, add fish and cook until golden on bottom, 3 to 4 minutes. Carefully turn over fish and cook until opaque in center and golden on bottom, 3 to 4 minutes. Divide fish between two warmed plates. Pour off drippings from skillet; wipe with paper towels. Preparation for sauce: Place skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter; cook until golden, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in parsley and lemon juice (sauce may sputter). For a taste of the 1904 World’s Fair beyond the food, the Missouri History Museum continues to offer the in-depth exhibit, The 1904 World’s Fair: Looking Back at Looking Forward.

Visitors can take a trip back in time to experience the notable people, architecture, inventions and fashion at the grand spectacle in and around Forest Park. “The thing that is hardest for me to think about is that it was really here,” notes exhibit curator Sharon Smith. “I can’t quite fathom it—buildings so large, a huge Ferris wheel, and it went all the way to Big Bend. It impacted the whole area.” Today, an important part of the exhibit is a map of the fairgrounds that helps modern-day St. Louisans imagine the breadth of the historic event. “There are still things that exist to tell us part of the World’s Fair story,” Smith says. Those exhibit highlights include: • Prominent People: Almost 20 million people from throughout the world met in St. Louis, including President Theodore Roosevelt, along with First Lady Alice, and legendary inventor Thomas Edison.

• Amazing Architecture: Dubbed ‘the Ivory City,’ more than 1,500 buildings were erected on what was once a woodland park. “The Saint Louis Art Museum is a building that still exists from the fair, as well as parts of Washington University,” Smith says. • Impressive Inventions: While the ice cream cone, hot dog and iced tea were popularized—and not invented—at the fair, there were many important introductions. “People were learning how to use X-rays and the fingerprint system; and puffed rice and Dr. Pepper were introduced here,” Smith notes. “People could experience these new tastes and ideas, and it was a way to introduce something to a larger population.” • Fashion Forward: Clothing defined people’s roles at the fair, Smith explains. “There were three groups: Most people were dressed to the hilt—men in woolen suits and women had layers of skirts.” Another group wore native clothing, and workers at the fair were outfitted in various uniforms, from the Jefferson Guard—the event’s police force—to band members and cooks.

The St. Louis Melting Pot

H E N S T. L O U I S hosted the 1904 Olympics and World’s Fair just more than a century ago, people from all corners of the earth descended on the city. St. Louis had long been welcoming French, Spanish, African and German immigrants; and in the seven-month period of the World’s Fair, more than 20 million people visited what was being called the “Future Great City of the World.”

Today, St. Louis remains a melting pot of diverse cultures. In recent years, the city has seen surges in immigrants from Bosnia, Africa, Asia and Latin America. As St. Louis celebrates its historic anniversary, many organizations are recognizing the rich multicultural heritage that the city has to offer. Local Germans and Germanophiles in St. Louis have a strong connection to the country through St. Louis-Stuttgart Sister Cities (SLSSC). President Susanne Evens says former St. Louis City mayor Raymond Tucker helped form the relationship in 1960, as St. Louis’ first sister city. “After World War II, he realized we needed to have ties to

Stuttgart,” she says. “It started back then as a cultural organization.” Though St. Louis’ German population has seen a considerable decline (from 28 percent in the early 1900s, down to about 10 percent today), Evens says its culture is sill alive and thriving. There are 16 German organizations in town, hosting between four and six events each month, from choir performances to Oktoberfest. SLSSC has assisted in bringing two German companies to St. Louis, and supports student exchanges through local colleges and high schools. This year, in honor of the city’s birthday celebration, SLSSC is giving an area high school student a $2,500 scholarship to study abroad in Stuttgart. Members of the organization come from all walks of life—some are German or of German descent, while others

traveled to Germany and loved it, or simply want to learn more about the country. For St. Louisans from across the pond, The British Connection provides a little taste of home. British women, women with British roots going back three generations, or any woman married to a British man, are welcome to join the organization. Originally a branch of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Organization, the group broke

free of the national organization in 1994. Tara Dix, former president and current member of the club, says many of the members are GI brides who came to America after WWII, though more and more members are young women who moved to the United States because of their husbands’ jobs. Dix says new transplants sometimes depend on other members of the group for help navigating American culture.

“Some of the foods have different names here,” Dix says. “So if you’re looking for a certain item for a recipe and you can’t find it…they answered silly questions for me [like that].” Members of the organization attend as few or as many events as they like. Husbands are invited to some events, like the May banquet, which, in recent years, has been a potluck garden party. “Everybody brings food, usually traditional English desserts like trifle, which you know will be enjoyed by fellow members,” Dix laughs. “The first time I made trifle here for my American friends, people were suspicious. If you make a trifle and take it to The British Connection, you know the ladies will like it.” Connie M itchell joined the group after meeting Dix. Mitchell’s husband is British, and she says it was nice for him to meet other British husbands through the group. Mitchell has since moved away from St. Louis, but still keeps in touch with the members she met through the club. “The ladies were so welcoming and sweet,” she says. “When I got pregnant with my second son, the British Connection ladies had a baby shower for me. Executive director Isabelle Heidbreder says the nonprofit organization is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year as a school. Students of all ages and abilities are welcome—right now, Heidbreder says, students range in age from 3 years old to their late 80s. Most of the teachers are French natives, and teach French culture in addition to the language. Members can check out items from the Alliance’s library, participate in monthly reading circles and cinema club meetings or attend social functions, like poetry readings and wine tastings. Though most St. Louisans are aware that Frenchman Pierre Laclede founded the city, many don’t realize the cultural similarities that still exist today, Heidbreder says. St. Louis City Hall was copied from the city hall in Paris, and street names like Chouteau and Carondelet also are French. But the similarities don’t stop there. “I went to a party when I first moved to St. Louis,” Heidbreder says. “An older gentleman approached me and said, You’ve arrived in the Paris of the Midwest. I quickly left and thought, These are strange people, but now I’ve been here for 16 years and couldn’t agree more. The cultural offerings in St. Louis are incredible.”

Missouri History Museum’s Parent & Me Program Three times per year, the Missouri History Museum houses its Parent & Me program, designed for children ages 2 through 5. “We usually highlight our special exhibits, so this month, the four-week series was titled Happy Birthday, St. Louis,” says Lindsay Newton, youth and family programs manager. “Each week at the program, we have a gallery, as well as a classroom, set up with activities created for our themes… [The kids] float through the stations at their own pace.” Activities include things such as breaking open geodes, playing dressup, working on craft projects and face-painting. This program costs $20 per family for the fourweek course, and is free to friends-level museum members. Tucker, a physical therapist and certified educator of infant massage, teaches the ins and outs of infant massage to parents in both

The morning Stroller Tour program is designed for infants to 2-year-olds. Immediately after is the Play Date program, which is for toddler-aged children. Nguyen explains Play Date combines an art activity with an additional program, such as music, science, yoga or story-telling. Craft Alliance’s Kids’ Clay with Parents/Grandparents This program is a way of reconnecting families, according to studios manager Dan Barnett. “You’re doing something directly with them and having the experience of making something.” The five-week clay course meets once a week for two hours on Saturday morning. Both the adult and child work on projects, making it an educational experience for all involved. A session is underway now, and another will begin on June 7. “You can put together a mug, you can do a decorative tile— literally, if you’re wanting to have something that’s functional or completely sculptural, you can do it in this class.”

From ‘Failure’ to Fitness

AUL AND LAURA MILLER ARE entrepreneurs who have figured out that the key to a certain kind of success is ‘total failure’—not that they’ve gone through business failures; on the contrary, they have been extremely successful in all their endeavors. But at 20 Minutes to Fitness, failure is the goal—muscle failure, that is. The Millers opened the first 20 Minutes to Fitness location more than 11 years ago, after hearing about a ‘slow-cadence’ exercise program that was getting some attention in New York. They did their research, came up with the name, bought the machinery, found some space in Clayton and opened shop. ‘Slow cadence’ means you push or pull as much weight as possible and do very slow repetitions on specially designed equipment until your muscle is exhausted, or ‘fails.’ As the name implies, you do the program for just 20 minutes once a week; and if you do it correctly, it works: People build muscle mass. When the Millers opened for business in 2002, some friends and acquaintances thought the concept was too edgy for St. Louis. After all, most people who are serious about fitness keep in shape the traditional way: sweating it out at the gym a few times a week. Laura says to make the business a success, all they hoped for was that a microscopic percentage of exercisers in the area would give it a try. “It’s been way beyond our expectations,” she says. “We thought if we ever had a chance to get 200 clients per week, that was all we needed. But today, we train 700 people a week.” The Millers now have locations in Clayton and Chesterfield, and also hold financial stakes in two locations in Sarasota, Fla. Women make up about 60 percent of their clientele. “The more muscle mass you have, the better your blood pressure. You also have a decreased susceptibility for Type 2 diabetes and improved bone density,” Laura notes. “Cardiovascular conditioning improves, as well as aerobic capacity and metabolism, and it could even help in prevention of dementia.” 20 Minutes to Fitness is just part of the Millers’ success story. The couple met at Drake University in Des Moines and married just after they graduated—that was 43 years ago. They moved to St. Louis when Paul landed the job as head of marketing at Rawlings Sporting Goods. Laura spent those early years raising two children, but then went to nursing school and became an RN. She opened what became the largest electrolysis hair removal

business in the area. Later, she took another career path and became well known as an interior designer. Some of her work was featured in national publications, including a cover story and spread in House Beautiful magazine. After Paul’s stint at Rawlings, he became an investment advisor with Merrill Lynch and Smith Barney, and now heads The Omega Group at the UBS Wealth Management office in Clayton. He’s on the boards of the Boys & Girls Clubs and FOCUS

But he also takes care of at least part of the fitness business. “I have to keep my concentration on my investment clients, so Laura runs everything—except the finances, the marketing and advertising—and I’m smart enough to keep out of the rest of it,” he says. “I pay the bills but she collects the money—she’s the most important person in here.” Paul says he always had the entrepreneurial spirit and Laura is convinced he helped develop that in her, as well. They have 23 employees, several of them have been with the company since it opened— and Laura believes that paying 100 percent of health and dental benefits for full-time employees is one of the reasons they’ve kept quality people on board. What spare time (if any) they have is spent on taking care of their 123-year-old Portland Place manse in the Central West End. The home is an historic St. Louis gem, built in 1891 by famed architect Theodore Link, who also designed Union Station. “We’re taking care of it for the next generation,” Paul says. And he and wife Laura are also taking care of their fitness business, where, for their clients, failure is not only an option—it’s a goal.

OR MANY, SPEAKING BEFORE AN AUDIENCE IS A challenge. That difficult task can be made tougher by those seated in front of the presenter. They are sometimes inattentive, or talk among themselves or do worse. Attendees can make the most confident and experienced presenter deliver less than their best. The speaker doesn’t like this, and the audience does not benefit as they should. It is a two-way street. There are specific things the presenter must do to make the event a success, and things the audience should do. The goal of this article is to develop better audiences that will help a speaker do their best. People coming to see and hear a speaker have expectations. They are spending time and money to learn something. It may be the 100th time the presenter has given their talk, but it is the first time for this audience. The speaker should have prepared and practiced for the occasion: They must know their subject well and customize it, as much as possible, to the audience. It should be delivered in a manner that educates and entertains the audience, while explaining it in words they understand. The audience can make or break a presentation. A good, enthusiastic group gives the speaker responses and energy that lead to a better presentation. To help the speaker and the audience, I’ve compiled a set of Audience Rules. 1. Be certain to arrive well before the scheduled event. You want the program to start when advertised and should be in your seat prior to it beginning. Arriving after an event has started and finding a seat is disruptive to attendees and the speaker. 2. Meeting the speaker before the presentation will help the speaker perform better and increase your takeaway. Be friendly and say, I’m looking forward to your presentation! That short sentence will give the speaker added incentive and energy for their upcoming talk. It also benefits those attending the event. Having the presenter shake your hand and thank you for coming to their talk, makes people feel the speaker genuinely cares about the audience. Continued from page 49 than if they had merely arrived and taken their seat. 3. Sit so your whole body faces the speaker. This isn’t a problem if chairs are already arranged in a classroom style. Sometimes, though, the presentation is after a meal where people are seated at round tables. It is best for the people to turn their chairs to face the presenter. Don’t sit with your arms crossed. This closes you off to new ideas and the speaker’s message. It also sends a negative nonverbal message to the presenter. 4. Be an active listener. Lean towards the speaker and listen intently. Make eye contact with the presenter. This lets them know you’re paying attention. If the speaker asks a question such as, Does that make sense? Motion your head up and down if it does, side to side if it doesn’t. If feedback indicates the audience is confused, a good speaker will restate their point in a different manner. They want you to understand their message. 5. Questions. If you want to ask the speaker a question, wait until the proper time. When asking a question, be polite in your language even if you disagree with something the speaker said. The presenter should show you the same courtesy. If you have more than one question, give others a chance to ask theirs before attempting to ask another.

6. Don’t talk to others, text, eat, drink, or do anything that could be distracting to the audience or speaker. If others are talking, texting, etc., take a leadership role and politely ask them to stop, perhaps by giving them the Hush! signal. If their impolite activity bothers you, it is bothering others. 7. When the presentation ends, applaud! Do this even if you disagreed with some of their points. Most likely, they put much time, thought, and effort into their speech. That should be respected and acknowledged.

8. Personally thank the speaker. Most people immediately head for the exit doors when a presentation concludes. Don’t! Take time to approach the speaker and say, Thank You! If there were specific things you gained from the presentation, mention them when shaking their hand and thanking them. Following up with an email or personal note, again, naming something you definitely learned, will always be appreciated! This is pretty basic Golden Rule stuff. Put yourself in the speaker’s position and imagine you’ve worked long and hard in preparation for talking to this group. How would you want to be treated by the audience? Answer that question and do it! Following these guidelines will ensure you—and other attendees— will receive the best presentation the speaker can deliver! Thinking About A New Phone?

OUR OLD CELL PHONE LOOKS like it was made in the ’90s and everybody you know has a new smart phone with all the bells and whistles. And now you want one, too? Gone are the days when you could buy a phone that only does one thing: make and receive phone calls. Nowadays, you can run an entire business on the phone—and some people do. First, a few basics. An ‘app’ is a buzz word you can no longer avoid. Short for ‘application,’ it is something you can use to do something—and that is almost anything. Of course, you can check your email, check weather, sports scores, the stock market, as well as Skype, post, tweet, and take and send photos. But what about those more unusual apps that you may or may not have thought you could use your cell phone for? Need a flashlight? There is an app for that! I use it all the time and it is terrific—and free. But before you select your apps (many are free,

others cost between $0.99 to $5.99), you need to choose a phone. And even before that, you need to select an operating system. An operating system (or OS, as the tech nerds say) is what runs your phone; and just like your computer, there are Windows, Apple and others. The popular iPhone, for instance, is an Apple product and runs on Apple’s OS. There are Windows phones that run Microsoft Windows and appear familiar to the many who use Windows on their computer. What’s different with phones is a third—and very popular OS—called Android. Android is Google’s OS. It was initially created by a company called Android that was bought by Google in 2005. About two years ago, this became the most-used mobile OS in the world. It is considered to be more stable and less prone to errors than the other two. The intention is to use touch and mimic real-world movements like swiping, tapping and pinching objects on the screen. The popularity of the Android devices is partly due to the ease of use and the reliability. Once you’ve selected an OS, then you may want to look at screen sizes: The large ones are greater than 4.7 inches, and include Samsung Galaxy, LG and Nokia Lumia. The medium screens range between 4 and 4.7 inches; examples are iPhone 5 and Motorola Moto X. Finally, the small screens are less than 4 inches and includes the likes of Blackberry. Although screen size is important, maybe even more so is the brightness, the color and the viewing angles. Don’t just look at the resolution specs, look at the actual phone. I would not recommend buying a smart phone online: It has to feel right, look right and be part of you. You have to see it, hold it and use it in person. So ask the sales clerk to show you various phones with different brightness and resolutions. The Galaxy Note 3, Moto X and the iPhone 5 have been top-rated in this respect. If the camera functionality is important to you, you should know that the cameras that are built in to the phones are of varying quality. The iPhone that I have doesn’t take good photos; and no, it’s not the photographer. For a high-quality camera, you need to look at HTC or Nokia. Next to ask about is the battery. It doesn’t matter what or how many fancy features your phone has if you are out ‘juice.’ Battery-makers list performance in terms of talk time, standby time, or how many hours you can expect a device to perform tasks such as playing video and music. Make sure that the person selling you the phone explains the performance of the battery of that particular phone. T-Mobile’s LG G2 has the best battery life of all that were tested in January this year by an independent reviewer. Then, there is the question of provider: the company that will bill you monthly. There is AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and more. Ask yourself, Why am I buying a smart phone? Is it for the phone functionality and that alone? If that is the case, why not just get an inexpensive phone that allows you thousands of minutes per month— or better still, unlimited talk? Is it the Internet browser and download capability (the amount of data you can download—and how fast) or is it texting? Many plans come with ‘unlimited talk and text’—and that may be for you. Is the phone and Internet coverage important? For instance, if you travel to parts of the country (or the world) where you can reasonably expect limited coverage, then limited coverage plans may fit you. If you always remain in a large city like St. Louis, then the coverage your plan offers better cover St. Louis and the entire metropolitan area. Make sure that you ask those questions. How much money are you willing to spend? Are you personally paying for this or will your company pick up the tab? Smart-phone plans vary from $50 per month to up to 10 times that amount, depending on phone, options, minutes, data, coverage and other factors. These are monthly plans. You also need to purchase the actual phone; and of course, the cost varies, from $99 up to more than $700. That’s a one-time fee, but don’t forget to ask about warranties.

OR THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH NOT TO NEED the practicality of a four-door sedan or an SUV, a sporty coupe can provide good looks, personal luxury and sporty performance. Case in point: The new 2014 BMW 2-series is a great-looking, very sporty coupe that could make your daily commute the best part of your day. Replacing the 1-series in BMW’s lineup, the new 2-series carries on the compact, rear-wheel drive sport coupe market that the 1-series introduced to America in 2008. It’s also beautifully styled, fixing the one flaw of the 1-series, which was slightly odd looks, due primarily to an oddshaped C pillar. Smaller and lighter than the venerable 3-series and 4-series, the 2-series shares the same engines. So, same engines plus less weight equals better performance. The trade-off is the lack of a functional back seat. Though there is seating for two in back, anyone beyond middle school is not going to want to spend a lot of time back there.

with redundant controls on the steering wheel. It has an I-drive system; but fortunately, you don’t seem to have to use the remote rotary knob too much to do basic functions. Amenities such as dual-automatic climate control, a sunroof, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and dynamic cruise control make this a comfortable and enjoyable place to be, though some interior plastics remind you that this is not a premium luxury vehicle. The 228i has a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine that pumps out 240 horsepower via an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission that pushes the coupe to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, yet still gets 23 mpg city, 36 highway. An auto start-stop feature kills the engine when you come to a stop, but there’s a bit of a shudder when it re-awakens. Fortunately, this feature can be defeated. Acceleration is very good, but not overwhelming, as it probably is with the available 6-cylinder turbo 235 model. Handling is excellent, thanks to a nice, firm, athletic suspension and tight communicative steering. Brakes are good, as well. This is a real driver’s car and it’s a blast to toss around. According to Autohaus BMW salesman Gerd Petermann, because the 228 starts at a lower price point than other BMWs, it’s more accessible to younger buyers. Plus, “the 4-cylinder turbo engine has the same horsepower as the outgoing 6 and more torque, all with better fuel economy.”

THE RIDE IS GEARED MORE TOWARD COMFORT THAN PERFORMANCE, BUT THAT’S WHAT YOU WANT IN A LUXURY COUPE. Prices for the 228i start about $33,000; the 6-cylinder 235, is about $44,000. Another attractive sporty coupe, with a very different character, is the Mercedes E-Class coupe. The E-Class coupe is more of a personal luxury grand tourer with a sporty nature. Like most Mercedes coupes, the E-Class is a beautiful automobile with an unmistakable Mercedes grill, sharply raked front and rear windows, pillarless side windows and character lines that really set it apart. The interior is classic Mercedes luxury: Soft, rich leather swathes the heated (and optionally cooled) front seats, and most of the rest of the interior. Beautiful wood accents add warmth to the interior and an analogue clock in the middle of the dash adds an extra touch of class. Even before you get started, an electric arm extends to hand you your seat belt. A large screen operated by a remote knob between the seats dominates the top of the dash (hard buttons for the audio), and dual-automatic climate control make using primary functions relatively easy. The sunroof

spans the entire roof of the car, and the front half can be moved backwards for some open-air motoring. There’s also lots of technology, such as a backup camera that not only shows you what’s behind you (and lines to show you where you’re headed), but also what’s on the side and in front of you so you can make sure you’re not too close to anything beside you. It can even park itself and warn you if it thinks you’re about to hit something. The two rear seats are not the most comfortable place for a full-sized adult for long periods, but they do fold down to expand storage for the generous trunk. The E350 sports a 3.5-liter V-6 engine good for 302 horsepower, which provides plenty of power and is channeled to the rear or all wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The E550 offers a 4.6 liter V-8 with 402 horses. With the V-6, mileage is 20 city, 28 highway. Both cars also are available in a convertible. The steering is a bit overboosted, but handling is decent. The ride is geared more toward comfort than performance, but that’s what you want in a luxury coupe. Overall it has a substantial, well-crafted feel to it. Tom Schellhase, sales manager at Plaza Mercedes, says, “The E-Class coupe has very distinctive styling combined with a sporty nature and lots of luxury.” The E-Class coupe with the 6-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive starts at about $56,000.

He’s always been a handful to care for; but now, as a fully grown adult, his sporadic and unpredictably aggressive behavior has Tami and Bill practicing “extreme parenting,” and Lisa unhappily resigned to living on the edge. When Bill’s overly religious mother, Sue, pays a visit from out of town, she does her unwitting best to set a match to the emotional kindling in the Martin household.

HIGHLIGHTS Deanna Jent, artistic director of Mustard Seed Theatre and the mother of an autistic son, garnered the Kevin Kline Award for Best New Play in 2011 for this heart-rending look at a family in the throes of coping with severe autism. Jent’s one-act, 80-minute piece went on to be performed Off-Broadway, in Los Angeles and in Michigan, and is scheduled to be presented in Brazil in 2015.

May 30 Maleficent To call this film hotly anticipated has to be the understatement of the summer. On top of being annoyingly gorgeous, hard-working and charitable, Angelina Jolie also manages her career beautifully. Here, she plays the much-maligned title character in the Sleeping Beauty saga. A Million Ways to Die in the West Considering this movie stars some of my favorite actors (Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi, Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron), it looks surprisingly bad. The comedy follows MacFarlane’s character, a timid sheep farmer who chickens out of a gunfight. I do not have a good feeling about this one.

June 6 The Edge of Tomorrow Take Source Code and Looper. Mash them up. Remove Jake Gyllenhaal and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Add Tom Cruise and a $100-million budget...and voila! You have the biggest boxoffice bomb of 2014. Also, the title sounds like a ’60s soap opera.

That’s primarily because Jent is as good a writer as she is a director, and she’s a very, very good director. She’s taken the reins of this revival (Lori Adams helmed the original) and enticed all but one of the original performers to reprise their roles superbly in another tense and terrifying look at the Martins’ fragile world.

The lone newcomer to the cast is Daniel Lanier as Josh, and he beautifully conveys the various symptoms of autism, such as avoiding eye contact, flailing his arms, rocking his body and repeating words or phrases. It’s fascinating to watch Michelle Hand as Tami, Greg Johnston as Bill, Katie Donnelly as Lisa and Carmen Russell as Sue drain their emotions once again in their original parts. They work seamlessly with Jent’s realistic dialogue and interact naturally in normally embarrassing situations, such as Bill seeing his mother aghast at observing Josh play with himself, or Donnelly exploding over Josh’s predictable reaction to the barking of a dog she’s found and wants to keep. There’s a palpable normality to these reactions that make them all the more poignant. Falling is a harrowing night of theater that will cause you to stop and contemplate your own family in a different light.

Q&A with Ed Asner

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945, is one of the titans in American politics. Roosevelt, the blueblood, Democratic governor of New York, defeated Republican incumbent Herbert Hoover in 1932, as the nation struggled to survive in the Great Depression. Roosevelt, who famously said that he made decisions when he was “51 percent certain,” overhauled America’s economy with his New Deal policies and WPA (Works Project Administration) agency. The WPA employed millions of out-ofwork people on massive infrastructure construction projects, as well as programs for the arts and social sciences. He orchestrated America’s entrance into World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the only president to serve more than two elected terms. With a daunting list of achievements, it seemingly would take an actor with his own formidable resume to portray Roosevelt in a one-man play. Such an actor is Ed Asner, a Kansas City, Mo., native who is the only male actor to win Emmy Awards for the same Mary Tyler Moore character (Lou Grant) in a comedy and drama TV series. Asner, who at age 84 is an indefatigable performer, has won seven Emmy Awards, more than any other male actor. He’s bringing his oneman show, FDR, to St. Louis for a benefit performance for the New Jewish Theatre on Sunday, April 27, at Washington University’s Edison Theatre. For tickets, call 442-3283. Recently, Ladue News had the opportunity to interview Asner, a lifelong Democrat and progressive who served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985. You’ve been doing FDR since 2010. How often do you take it on tour? Every spring. (As a one-man show) it’s much more difficult to do, but then you have no one else to blame! Where did the idea for the show originate? With Philip Langner, who was head of Theatre at Sea for the Theatre Guild. (Note: The Theatre Guild was founded in New York City in 1918. The Guild produced a total of 228 plays on Broadway through 1996, including Dore Schary’s Sunrise at Campobello, about Franklin Roosevelt, in 1958. An offshoot of the Theatre Guild called Theatre at Sea began in 1975.) Are your politics similar to FDR’s? Yes. I worship FDR and (was delighted when) Philip Langner approached me (to portray him). Since 2010, I’ve done somewhere between 300

and 400 performances as FDR (including one at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre in 2011). Your home state of Missouri also is the birthplace of another American president, Harry S. Truman, who himself has been the subject of a one-man show. Do you see similarities in the personalities and politics of Roosevelt and Truman? Very much so. Their backgrounds, though, are markedly different. You have an extremely impressive list of accomplishments, but perhaps most impressive of all is ‘working actor.’ Do you have two or three personal favorites of all the roles you’ve played through the years? Lou Grant, naturally, as well as Rich Man, Poor Man (the ground-breaking ABC-TV miniseries), Family Man, Elf (as Santa Claus) and Up! (an animated film that was nominated for Best Picture in 2009). Tell us about your experiences doing the voice work for Up! Other than tripping and laying my head open for six staples, I had a marvelous time! There was a terrible tragedy recently in your native Kansas City (a white supremacist gunman killed three people outside two Jewish facilities), an apparent hate crime. Why is such disturbing behavior so difficult to eradicate even in the 21st century? It is a sick-making world, and we can’t come up to the level of treatment necessary.

Progress seems to take one step forward and two steps back. You’ve been very active throughout your life with progressive causes. Do you think that America has changed significantly in your lifetime, or has progress been tortuously slow? Progress seems to take one step forward and two steps back. What do you enjoy most about portraying FDR? His problem-solving, his ability to see the future and his impact—which could be the greatest of any president!

Ballet, jazz and hip-hop to clogging, flamenco and modern dance will take centerstage during the 15th annual St. Louis Dance Festival Showcase from May 2 to 4 at the Edison Theatre at Washington University.

To mark the event’s 15th anniversary, a special finale will close each show. Choreographed by acclaimed Joffrey Ballet master Gerard Charles, all 30 dance companies together will take the stage for a unique performance to the tune of a classical piece by Mozart. Nartana Prem’s father and president of Dances of India, Dr. Bhartur Prem—known as Dr. Prem to many—brought the idea of the dance festival to fruition 15 years ago. While Dr. Prem felt that nationally touring dance companies were great for St. Louis audiences, he also saw a need for an event to showcase the wide variety of talented groups here in St. Louis. To fill this void, he worked with former Dance St. Louis executive director, the late Adam Pinsker, to launch the showcase that allows audiences the rare treat of experiencing a diverse range of dance, music and culture, all on one stage throughout one weekend. The dance festival has been embraced by the community, growing in number of dance companies, as well as audience attendance, through the years, Dr. Prem says. Attendees can see groups they enjoy, as well as discover new styles, he adds. “For the price, you just don’t see this type of show. It continues to get a very positive audience reaction.”

Sauvignon Blanc: What I’m Drinking Now BY STANLEY BROWNE, CSW

Let’s take a sip… Color: Light straw and reflective in the light Aroma: Slightly grassy, with grapefruit, honeysuckle, peach pit Taste: All of the above, with notes of tropical nectarine and lemongrass with bright acidity This wine is fermented in stainless tanks (90 percent aged in stainless and 10 percent in neutral oak, which gives the wine some mouthfeel texture without oak flavor). This wine has a nice balance of grapefruit and tropical fruits, making it the perfect spring/summer sipper. Where do they grow sauvignon blanc? France: We’ve all heard of Bordeaux. White Bordeaux sauvignon blanc is the main grape with sémillon and muscadelle as the other blending grapes to round out and soften the citrus grassy

notes. A lot of good, inexpensive white Bordeaux comes from Entre-deux-Mers, which means ‘between two seas,’ the Garonne and Dordogne rivers (the left and right banks of Bordeaux). The Loire Valley farther north also is home to sauvignon blancs, known to be racy, with citrus and gooseberry notes and high acidity. The appellations of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and Touraine are the most well-known. There, the chalky soils add richness and perfumed notes for balance. New Zealand: This grape helped put this wine-growing country on the map. Cloudy Bay Vineyards gained worldwide accolades for its sauvignon blanc. High citrus/grapefruit flavors are associated with New Zealand. This is an early-ripening grape, which, when picked late, will lead to muted flavors and a lack of acidity. These winemakers saw the benefits of picking early for the intensity of flavors and acidity; and a later picking for the more tropical fruit notes to shine through. This practice is now used by others around the world. New Zealand also led the way with Stelvin (screw caps) closures to keep their wine bright and fresh with no chance of ‘corked wine.’ North America: North and south, from Washington State to Southern California, make sauvignon blanc, which has gained in popularity in the USA in the last 20 years. Prior to this, the varietal was not made well by most, producing aggressive, grassy and unbalanced wines. It was Robert Mondavi who barrel-aged the wines to round out those aggressive flavors, and also coined the name, fumé blanc, after Pouilly-Fumé in Loire. These days, we have all different styles, from citrus-driven to more tropical fruit-driven wines. This is all based on the soils and the climate of where we grow sauvignon blanc. South America: Chile is making some good sauvignon blanc in a style that includes citrus, grassy notes and some peppers. It generally is less acidic than New Zealand and more similar to French sauvignon blanc. The cooler Valparaiso region is a notable region: In 1990, ampelographers (experts on vines and leaves) were called in to Chile to distinguish true sauvignon blanc plantings from other mistaken varietals. Other Areas: South Africa’s Stellenbosch region makes some nice, racy sauvignon blanc. And we can’t forget Italy’s northeast region, Collio, which produces good sauvignons often

blended with other white varietals for some great wines. The wonderful world of sauvignon blanc is calling your palate, as well. Pair it with goat cheese, seafood, pesto sauces, etc… or, simply sip while relaxing on the patio with good friends. Tasting Tip: Expose yourself to as many fruits as possible to help determine flavors in wine. Try a pomelo, a gooseberry or something else new to expand your repertoire. Then see yourself picking out those fruits when tasting. Wine Recommendation: It’s a good idea to try many different styles from Loire, Bordeaux, New Zealand, California. I picked Honig because of the balance of citrus and tropical fruits.

PRING HAS FINALLY SPRUNG. Well, at least my palate thinks so, because these days, I’m craving crisp and refreshing citrus notes in my wine. I often tell people that grapes, like apples, are a multi-dimensional fruit and come in a range of varietals. The sauvignon blanc grape is similar to the tart Granny Smith apple. The grape gets its name from the French word sauvage (wild) and blanc (white). The grape traces its origins to France in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. It is a greenskinned grape; and depending on the climate, can range from very grassy to tropical. Interestingly, in the 18th century, the vine paired with cabernet franc to parent the cabernet sauvignon grape. The wine I grabbed from our cooler is 2012 Honig Napa Valley. My wife, Arlene, and I recently visited Honig Winery in Napa, so this naturally caught my eye. Michael Honig is an old friend from my days at A. Bommarito Wines, and we frequently visit when he is in St. Louis. Honig is a fairly small winery in Rutherford, and has been family-owned since 1964. ‘Honig’ means honey bee in German; hence, the honey bee insignia on its bottles. Their vineyards have been sustainably farmed for many years, which means that while not certified organic, they follow similar practices with all-natural handling of the vineyards, but are allowed to spray pesticides—if necessary—to save the crop.

Time certainly does fly—it’s already been a year since the folks at Piccione Pastry opened up in the Delmar Loop. The authentic Italian pastry shop marked its first anniversary this week; and to celebrate, they’re offering a slew of discounts through this Sunday, April 27. They include mini birthday cake cannolis, mini-scoops of gelato and Italian sodas for $1 each; and breakfast focaccia and coffee, lunch combos and 1-pound boxes of Italian cookies for $4.22 each. Bring On the Veggies! BY SIDNEY LEWIS

NE RECENT DINING TREND AROUND town that’s most welcome is the spate of new restaurants offering vegetarian and vegan fare that’s creative: Tree House is one such eatery, which opened last year in the South Grand neighborhood. Tree House has an interior that’s light and airy, thanks to the tall ceilings and minimal décor; not to mention the plethora of windows, which provide some fine South Grand people-watching opportunities. There’s a solid list of of original cocktails at Tree House, and during our visit we tried out a couple: the Tree House Almond Milk Punch ($7) and The Roots ($8). Of the two, the milk punch stood out. It was a subtly sweet concoction consisting of white rum, almond milk, cardamom and passion fruit. We chose The Roots as it’s based on aquavit, one of our favorite spirits that’s often overlooked on local drink menus. However, the pepperiness of the aquavit, along with the smooth sweetness of the Big O ginger liqueur that’s part of the mix, was completely overwhelmed by the beet syrup and the vegetal bitterness of the Italian amaro Cynar also used in the drink. The Tree House food menu runs the gamut of influences, from Asian to Latin to American and then some. The takes on south-of-the-border cuisine were the most successful. Both the Chile Relleno ($8) and the Chorizo Tamale ($11) were delicious plant-based versions of these favorites. The tamale came with a complex black-bean mole that

nicely complemented the tender corn fritter and the tart pickled cabbage slaw alongside. The chile relleno is based around a perfectly cooked poblano chile, coated in Panko bread crumbs and topped with plenty of melty chihuahua cheese and some salsa sofrito, a sweet and spicy pepper sauce. Less successful were the Asian- and Americanbased creations we tasted. The Raw Noodle Bowl ($11), was chock-full of mung bean noodles and raw veggies and came with a choice of three sauces: coconut red curry, Kafir lime peanut or sweet chili vinaigrette. We opted for the coconut red curry, but found it lacking in spice and overall flavor. The Tree House Sliders ($6) were filled with mushrooms— always a good thing—but the delicious fungi were sandwiched between tiny pieces of toast, which fell apart as soon as we attempted to eat them. Plain ol’ bread would’ve been a better choice. Service was hit-or-miss during our visit. While the dining room was only partially filled, it took an inordinately long time for our orders to be taken and for drinks to make it to the table, though our server was pleasant and apologetic for the wait on both counts. With a little tightening up, Tree House definitely has the potential to be a player in the vibrant and varied culinary scene on South Grand and the city at large.

Schnuck echoes that sentiment, saying, “We really do believe that the business we’re in is one of the most noble professions: We provide a core need for people, and that is nourishment and survival and food. I get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to provide that service to people, and I know our whole family does.” Customers can provide their own contribution to OFS through donation bins located in area Schnucks locations. “It’s a way customers can participate, and also a way for us to leverage the volume and traffic in our stores to support area food banks,” Schnuck says.
