EDITOR IT IS ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE THAT NEXT WEEK IS MAY – HOW quickly spring has sprung! May brings big changes and new beginnings: Not only do we welcome spring flowers back into our gardens, but also “Pomp and Circumstance” will begin ringing out to commemorate graduation throughout the metro area. For all of our readers with a loved one on the precipice of this life-changing accomplishment, go to p. 58 to read LN regular Connie Mitchell’s Daily feature on graduation giving. Mitchell chats with area wealth managers to discover the best ways to give monetary gifts to grads that prepare them for a fiscally responsible future. As for channeling the changing weather and budding blooms, LN fashionista Katie Yeadon has put together fresh and innovative looks to update your wardrobe for spring. Shot on location at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, this Style feature with her couture recommendations will make you ditch the traditional feminine florals (p. 46). A perfect place to try out one of Katie’s fierce fashion forms is The Selfie Room, the newest and trendiest museum in town. Robyn Dexter, LN digital editor and staff writer, shares the magic of this creative and funky space dedicated to capturing the most stellar selfies in this Arts & Culture feature on p. 69. All the best,
Alecia Humphreys

loria Pasley returned home to St. Louis, where she was born and raised, after spending more than a decade in New York. She longed for a place of comfort, a safe haven as she aged – somewhere that supported her independence, yet offered a secure spot to rest her head. She found that and much more at The Gatesworth. “I’ve always had some health problems,” Pasley notes. “When the assistant executive director, Christie Wolff, took me on a tour, I just thought The Gatesworth would be the greatest place to be – in good health or when I was ill. It’s a comforting, nurturing place.” She had remembered the senior living community being built prior to her departure from St. Louis. On her return, she had to investigate if what was once “the talk of the town” had lived up to its reputation. After visiting The Gatesworth grounds, she was convinced and decided to move in. “I didn’t have to do anything during the move because The Gatesworth did everything,” Pasley recalls. “A moving coordinator did the whole nine yards. Sometimes you don’t know what to get rid of, but she gave me great insight. The move was great for me – an absolute dream.” The classroom teacher continues to work full time for the FergusonFlorissant School District, teaching grades kindergarten through sixth. No matter what each day working with children brings, she finds a sense of calm on returning to her new apartment. “The Gatesworth is great to go home to,” she says. “You can unwind. It’s a place that can keep you busy all day long, too, if you let it. It has activities galore. You can exercise, swim, dine, watch movies or see the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra or the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis – whatever you desire.”
Pasley appreciates the opportunities her new community offers to experience the diverse venues of St. Louis and its surrounding areas. She recently adventured to the middle of the state to complete her aim to witness the evolution of the Budweiser Clydesdale. “The Gatesworth took us to Boonville to Warm Springs Ranch, where they breed the Budweiser Clydesdales,” she gushes. “I’ve been to Grant’s Farm and Anheuser-Busch brewery to see the Clydesdales, but I had never been to Boonville. It was a treat for me to get out of the classroom and just relax.” Pasley’s new environment also feeds her passion for playing the piano. “I started playing when I was about 8 years old,” she shares. “Music is a lot of things to me. It’s a great venue to connect people and to enjoy things greatly. I brought my spinet piano with me and am able to play in my apartment.” As a result of her musical ability, other residents have taken notice. “The Gatesworth has a choir,” Pasley adds. “When I first arrived, different members were asking me, ‘When are you going to join?’ I haven’t had the opportunity to do so yet because they practice during the day. I’m looking forward to doing that in the summer and on school breaks.” Another draw for Pasley was the divine dining options at The Gatesworth, from The Colonnade’s elegant setting to the chic and casual atmosphere of the Palm Court Restaurant and Lounge, or the fresh finds at the Bistro. And when Pasley, who thoroughly enjoys cooking, wants to stay in, she dons her apron and makes the most of her customized kitchen. “The Gatesworth is all-encompassing to me,” Pasley says. “It is a beautiful place for anybody and everybody. It’s just a good place to be.” The Gatesworth, One McKnight Place, St. Louis, 314-993-0111, thegatesworth.com

DANCE FOR DRAVET
T
Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett he Brennan family hosted the fundraiser Dance for Dravet, in honor of their 18-month-old relative Anna, at Third Degree Glass Factory in late March. The event featured cocktails and catering by Cravings, silent and live auctions (including a live glassblowing) and dancing to the music of Boogie Chyld. It raised more than $185,000 for the Dravet Syndrome Foundation, which seeks to research different therapies in various stages of development, to increase awareness of that syndrome and to provide support to affected families.
All of the Brennan family worked together to help raise the much-need funds to find a cure for the Dravet syndrome. KATHLEEN MCGUIRE, CHAIRPERSON

SING FOR SITEMAN Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
T
he 10th annual Sing for Siteman event took place in late March in the Performing Arts Center at John Burroughs School. Before the concert, which included performance selections from popular music, Broadway and opera, guests enjoyed a cocktail reception with an array of hors d’oeuvres by LaChef Catering. Co-chairs Pat Burkhart and Kim Eberein, followed by Andrew Jorgensen, general director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, welcomed attendees. Four artists from the opera’s Opera Tasting Series performed: Teresa Castillo, Rehanna Thelwell, Edward Graves and Robert Mellon. Grammy Award winner Christine Brewer, special guest host, and Kennedy Holmes, a finalist on NBC’s The Voice, made a special guest appearance. Dr. Timothy Eberlein, the director of Siteman Cancer Center, also spoke during the event.
The 10th anniversary of Sing for Siteman demonstrates how music is curing cancer, one song at a time. Each year, the event has grown in awareness and in support of the Discovery Fund at Siteman. We are proud to make music happen to help others. PAT BURKHART, CO-CHAIR

The region’s oldest aIDS service organization, Saint Louis Effort for aIDS, has been around since 1985 and began partnering with the international fundraising campaign Dining Out for Life in 1993. This combined effort has enabled the local nonprofit not only to provide prevention and social services, as well as community outreach, but also to tackle hIV and aIDS through a more comprehensive approach. Today, Dining Out for Life hosts events in 59 cities across the united States and in Canada, inviting hundreds of thousands to eat out and save lives. Twenty-five percent of each check goes to local organizations that support those who have been affected by hIV and aIDS. Saint Louis Effort for aIDS has grown significantly through its partnership with the annual fundraising initiative. “Since last year, we moved from our old office, which was in The Grove, to a new location in midtown,” describes James Lesch, director of development at Saint Louis Effort for aIDS. “We have been able to expand services. Fundraisers, like Dining Out for Life, ensure everyone has access to our new services, regardless of ability to pay. Those include our new on-site medical clinic and pharmacy, both of which specialize in hIV and aIDS care.”
Each year, Dining Out for Life hosts the Impact awards to recognize participating organizations. Last year, Saint Louis Effort for aIDS claimed the grand prize for utilizing funds raised in the most impactful way for its community. “Twenty-six years in, I always credit [this event’s] success to the fact that you can make it whatever you like – all you really have to do is mark your calendar,” Lesch declares. “If you are in the mood for margaritas, we’ve got great Mexican restaurants. If you’re in the mood for burgers and fries and beer, we’ve got great pubs. This event has such a life to it because every year it’s exactly what you want it to be.” as the grand prizewinner, Saint Louis Effort for aIDS had the privilege to highlight the city it supports in Dining Out for Life’s national advertising campaign, which was shot on-site here in St. Louis. “We have a strong culture,” Lesch says about the nonprofit and the community at large. “People take ownership of our mission. Getting to work with people, within and externally, who care so deeply for this cause is really rewarding. Their passion fuels your passion. We were able to showcase the St. Louis foodie scene on a national level and that St. Louis isn’t just a great food destination – it’s got heart, too.”

hile working on a home in Ladue, PK Construction enlisted Amy Studebaker Design for creative assistance. Having worked regularly with PK Construction, Studebaker was delighted to be brought on board to help ensure the final look of the clients’ master bedroom was impeccable. “We were inspired by a beautiful block-printed wallpaper by Schumacher,” Studebaker says. “It had a soft and serene quality that set the ambiance for a peaceful master bedroom retreat.” She notes the most challenging part of the master bedroom project was creating a balanced furniture layout. “This was due in large part to the unique characteristics and oddities that are sometimes found in older homes,” Studebaker says. The end result, though, is a quiet and harmonious space that will bring solitude to Studebaker’s clients for years to come.

A St. Louis couple crafts cutting boards and serving trays every bit as playfully lovely as they are green.
30 April 26, 2019 | LadueNews.com
T
he American architectural giant Louis Sullivan long ago observed that “form ever follows function,” but Sullivan never equated functional with boring – an aesthetic distinction epitomized by Steve Souder and Peggy Eng’s Creative Edge. That husband-and-wife team creates common, but uncommonly stylish, items integral both to cooking and to entertaining: cutting boards and serving trays crafted by hand from eco-friendly hardwoods in a solar-powered shop in St. Louis’ Fox Park neighborhood. Regarding an enterprise seemingly dedicated to putting the fun in functional, Eng sketches what she and her spouse each contribute to the pieces – conceptually and practically. “I do the design of each piece, sanding and finishing, and the business end – social media, website, photography, shows, interface with customers, packing and shipping orders,” she says. “Steve makes the pieces.” At greater length, Eng explains her and Souder’s individual expertise relating to Creative Edge products. “Steve has over 50 years’ experience working with wood – he made his first piece of furniture at the age of 12,” she says. “Through Full Circle Design Works, established in the mid-’90s, he makes custom cabinetry, furniture and other wood items. His depth of knowledge of wood is phenomenal. “I opened my jewelry design studio in 1985 and sold work to galleries, museum shops and boutiques across the country for over 25 years. I took a detour for a few years to do product development with fair-trade artisans in Peru and Cambodia, an enlightening and enriching experience. It also renewed an awareness of repurposing materials and being resourceful.” Eng and Souder offer boards and trays in six distinct shapes: round, square, ovoid, octagonal, “long oval” (pieces resembling an old-school skateboard) and cloud-shaped (pieces joining four circular segments of diverse sizes). Often, the pieces incorporate eye-catching angles and curves – from subtle to severe – and even (Eng’s favorite) polka dots. Creative Edge customarily works with cherry, hickory, mahogany, maple, walnut and white oak. “We use the hardwood remnants
from other jobs as much as possible,” Eng says. “If we don’t have enough or any of a wood we need, then we order from our usual supplier. All the woods we use are sustainably grown and harvested. “Sustainability has been part of our lifestyle for a long time. We want to be responsible about the way we use materials and acknowledge that we have finite resources. At home, we have a big kitchen garden, and we compost our food scraps. At both the shop and home, we recycle, use [light-emitting diode] bulbs as much as possible, [and] keep the thermostats low in the winter and high in the summer. The location of the shop finally gave us the right combination of flat roof space and good solar access, and it was cost-effective.” The time it takes to create a board or tray depends on the individual piece, and Creative Edge employs a five-step process to do so: selecting and prepping the wood; precision-cutting; trimming to size and detailing, as well as drilling holes for any design elements; sanding; and finally, using food-grade mineral oil and beeswax to seal and protect the wood. Despite the artistry of the pieces, Creative Edge’s prices likely will strike most potential purchasers as eminently reasonable. Boards and trays currently available can be viewed on its website, with amounts ranging from $45 (for the Small Stripes Board) to $179 (for the Spiral Board). The endeavor also welcomes custom projects, although Eng admits, “Creative Edge is very new, so we haven’t had the time yet to make memorable custom pieces – hopefully soon, though!” Despite that newness – the endeavor launched last June – Eng expresses delight over the positive response to her and her husband’s work and sketches their informal plans for Creative Edge. “The polka-dot boards make people smile,” she relates with pardonable pride. “We’d like to continue building the accounts we have and increase visibility through social media, trade shows and retail events.” All things considered, a sharp plan for a sharp endeavor. New Mom Musts
By Alecia Humphreys

oes this scenario sound familiar, new mom? Little laundry is strewn about, and bottles fill the sink. As you dream of sleep, pampering yourself may seem like the last thing on your mind. However, a little self-love can provide a brief burst of energy that you need (and deserve) during those first fragile weeks. Oh, and may we just say, mama – you’re doing great!
1. Your eyes may be heavy, but at least they can look bright thanks to Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème. Simply dab the entire eye area to instantly brighten and color-correct (bye-bye dark circles!). Collagenboosted and full of orange and green extracts, this crème firms and deeply hydrates, while remaining lightweight. Available for $38 through Ole Henriksen (olehenriksen.com). 2. Baby asleep, yet you can’t fathom folding that mountain of laundry? Spoil stressed skin with I Dew Care Matcha Mood Soothing Green Tea Wash-Off Mask. Apply a generous, even layer to clean skin (avoiding eyes and lips), and let it rest for five to 10 minutes, rinsing with lukewarm water while massaging the skin in a circular motion. Formulated with calming green tea extract and radiance-enhancing vitamin B3, it will have you feeling refreshed just in time for baby’s next feeding. Apply two to three times a week for best results. Available for $25 through Ulta Beauty (ulta.com).

3. A messy topknot may be your go-to as of late. However, thanks to Aveeno Fresh Greens Blend Dry Shampoo, you can let that (likely unwashed) hair down humbly. Shake the product, spraying it on lifted sections of dry hair. Massage it through the roots to absorb any excess oil, and brush to distribute evenly. Infused with oats, rosemary, peppermint and cucumber, this dry shampoo will absorb oil while adding volume. Available for $11.45 through Amazon (amazon.com).

4. When family or friends pop in for an unexpected visit, freshen your face by applying Revlon Volumazing Mascara and the Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Beach Bum. The mascara will provide full, beautifully fanned-out lashes, giving your eyes life, while Fenty’s skinstick, applied to the cheeks, will give you color. Mascara available for $8.99 through Revlon (revlon.com). Fenty Beauty Match Stix available for $25 through Fenty Beauty (fentybeauty.com).

Standing Tall
W
e all have heard the story about young George Washington being confronted by his father about a cherry tree that was cut down mysteriously. “I cannot tell a lie,” the lad said. “It was I.” True or not, that story has taught a crucial lesson to generations of schoolchildren. Honesty, integrity and taking responsibility for one’s own actions lie at the heart of what makes a person worthy of respect – and what makes our country great. This past Presidents’ Day, while thinking about old George, I pulled out a clipping I had saved from The Wall Street Journal a few weeks after the horrific 9/11 attacks. The article concerned Leslie Robertson, the principal engineer and architect of the World Trade Center, who was giving a speech titled “The Design, Construction and Collapse of the World Trade Center” before the National Council of Structural Engineers. As he spoke, the 73-year old architect was overcome by emotion. Then, during the question-and-answer period that followed, he was asked, “Mr. Robertson, is there anything you wish you had done differently in the design of the twin towers?” “I wish I had made the towers stand up a little
longer,” Mr. Robertson said. “I mean, every person was important. Everyone deserved a chance to get out.” The collapse of the World Trade Center was caused by a group of terrorists using religion as a shield to justify murder. Robertson was the architect of one of the greatest symbols of commerce that the world had ever seen. He could have insisted that its construction was flawless and had a perfect design, but he didn’t. He could have claimed that its collapse was not his fault and pointed the finger at those who truly deserved to be blamed for this cowardly act, but he didn’t. He could have maintained that the people in the towers indeed had enough time to get out (after all, the south tower stood for 47 minutes after impact, while the north tower stood for one hour and 40 minutes after impact), but he chose not to go the blame route. He stood tall and declined to find fault with the state of the world. He refused to blame anybody else. He did something that very few seem willing to do – he took responsibility. I don’t know if Robertson ever heard the tale about Washington as a child. I don’t know if there really was anything else Robertson could have done to make the towers stand longer. I do know that Robinson clearly

showed what character and responsibility are all about that day during his speech. Responsibility is a verification of our belief in what we do. And it is in times of crisis that we show what we are made of. The next time you find yourself in a difficult situation or have to explain a course of action gone wrong, remember Robertson. Own your work, accept your mistakes and avoid the blame game. The tower of your character will stand much longer.

COMMUNICATION CONVERSATION
The Interview Outfit
W
ith college graduations on the horizon, many new graduates will be interviewing for employment – and amazingly, what to wear has become an increasingly tricky question in our relaxed 21st-century lifestyle. I have a Japanese silk screen in my office where clients can hang potential interview outfits for a comprehensive evaluation. They try on different combinations, and we choose one (with a backup to sit in the trunk in case of last-minute coffee spills). However, some of the outfit suggestions clients bring in are more off-the-wall than off-the-rack – or on the floor, smooshed into a bag, wrinkled or stained and unusable. (Those outfits are mostly girls’; guys show up with suits in hanging bags.) Very often, the clothes just don’t fit. For example, a 21-year-old man slips into a suit, and his character reverts to age 16, when the suit was purchased. It’s now too tight, its sleeves too short and its pants unfashionably pleated. Additionally, he looks super uncomfortable, a drag on the confidence needed to ace an interview. Many young women today tend to love stretchy materials – shirts, skirts, dresses and leggings that
show detailed curves. Those materials and garments are great for a date, but the client tries to “stretch” their use to business by throwing a jacket over everything. Interviewers notice the mismatch in scale and fit right away and wonder why Saturday has invaded Tuesday. Also, sometimes the jacket comes from a dated, if dear maternal closet, undermining the independence female interviewees need most while forging their own career path. So here are my three guiding principles for interview dressing: Principle 1. Nothing too tight or too short! This applies to both genders since many men’s suits are now so narrow. A college “beer gut” looks worse when the jacket button pulls. Principle 2. Nothing you wear should speak louder than you do! You want the interviewer to focus on communication and your facial expressions and body language – not your palm tree tie, short socks, huge watch or printed blouse. Stick with solids. Principle 3. Avoid black suits! This isn’t a funeral, and taking the safe route connotes a lack of confidence and creativity. Navy and gray are fine, but avoid brown, which can look too subordinate, like a uniform. In the end, graduation is a big deal – congratulations!

Parents, a shopping excursion for an interview outfit that fits better (in size and style alike) would be a great gift!

Post-Grad
Red Ink By Connie Mitchell
Diploma in your hanD – but Debt on your minD? LocaL financiaL advisors give tips for recent coLLege grads.
I
t’s the time of year when the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” will be heard at colleges and universities coast to coast, and new college grads will be tossing their mortarboards. But after the celebrations are done, real life sets in. “Some of the most common financial concerns for new college grads are managing student and consumer debt acquired during college, budgeting so that post-college employment income covers expenses and learning how to manage employer-provided retirement benefits,” says Rachel O’Shia, a portfolio manager with Commerce Trust Co. Parents and others who want to give a financial gift to their new college graduate can consider a number of options that will help set the recipient up for ongoing financial success. However, those wanting to contribute first need to make sure their own finances are on stable footing, advises Kelly Waller, a financial advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors’ Clayton branch. Then, consider assisting the new grad in a way that encourages smart financial habits. “In order to establish sound financial practices, it may be wise to simply provide a safety net only when necessary or to be a lender with a repayment schedule set,” Waller says. “Doing some ‘matching’ to savings or debt-reduction payments made by the new grad is another possibility. I believe these types of strategies are more likely to discourage faulty reliance on others for financial needs.” For those who want to give significant lump-sum financial gifts, annual gift tax exclusion limits apply, she adds. In 2019, the threshold is $15,000 to avoid paying a gift tax. “If the graduate will be in the 10 percent or 12 percent tax brackets [income below $39,475 for a single tax filer], a great way for both the giver and recipient to benefit is by gifting appreciated stock to be sold by the graduate,” O’Shia says. “If
2019 | LadueNews.com APRIL 26,26, 2019 | LadueNews.com 5858 April
total income plus realized capital gain stays below $39,475, the realized gain will be tax-free, and the person making the gift is able to remove that unrealized tax liability from their own portfolio.” O’Shia stresses the importance of consulting with a tax professional before gifting appreciated stock. O’Shia also recommends encouraging graduates to contribute cash gifts they receive to a Roth Individual Retirement Account. Another suggestion is to increase the amount withheld from each paycheck for 401(k) retirement plan contributions and use the gifted funds for living expenses that the additional 401(k) deferral amount would have otherwise covered. “For any of these strategies, the gift-giver and the graduate should consult with their tax professional to confirm eligibility,” she says. Of course, one of the major concerns for many new graduates is student loan repayment. “This is an important part of financial planning for recent college graduates,” says Katie Kearins, managing director and wealth manager with Clayton Financial Group. “It’s important to keep track of the lender, balance and repayment status for each of your student loans. These details determine your options for loan repayment.” For example, when federal loans come due, loan payments will automatically be based on a standard 10-year repayment plan unless the graduate chooses another plan. If the standard payment is going to be hard to cover, there are other options, but extending repayment beyond 10 years, while lowering monthly payments, will end up costing more in interest. Therefore, Kearins suggests paying more than the minimum required, when possible, to decrease the total amount of interest paid over the life of the loan. “However, it’s important to consider your other obligations, such as
rent, car payment and other living expenses, and not prepay your student loans at the expense of incurring other debt at potentially higher rates such as those offered by many credit cards,” she notes. Parents and others can help pay down student loan debt as a form of financial gifting to the new graduate, she adds. The ins and outs of investing, financial options and choices may seem daunting for new graduates and parents alike. “For parents working with an investment professional, consider setting up a meeting between your graduate and investment team,” O’Shia says. “A favorite part of my career in portfolio management is when I get to offer investment education to [multiple] generations. Many advisors are happy to offer guidance on choosing and implementing an appropriate 401(k) asset allocation for our clients’ family members.”
As Waller sums up: “The young have the powerful tool of compounding in their grasp; I encourage them to take advantage of it, possibly by establishing an automatic monthly investment plan and learning the art of delayed gratification. Financial stability is one of the most empowering things in life!” Clayton Financial Group, 165 N. MAGA Season Starts With Old Warson Cup
Adam Long hits a drive on the second hole during the first round for the Masters golf tournament April 11 in Augusta, Georgia.
and Corey Vanek. Bealke, a 2017 graduate of Priory High School, attends Saint Louis University this fall and currently works on the grounds crew at Algonquin Golf Club. Heggemann, who graduates from Webster University in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, now works as an athletic department assistant at that university. Vanek graduates from Warrensburg’s University of Central Missouri this May with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and has the opportunity to visit USGA headquarters in New Jersey as part of the internship’s orientation. The grant in question funds the hiring of young men and women to give them experience in golf administration.
Long Goes to Masters St. Louis native Adam Long recently experienced a thrill by earning a spot in the Masters. Long achieved that honor by winning the Desert Classic, finishing with a 26-under 262 to win his first PGA title after making 137 starts on various mini tours. This time last year, Long was playing the Web.com Tour. Now he’s enjoying the pageantry and the azaleas at the famed course in Augusta, Georgia. Finishing with a two-day total of 149, Long fell short of making the cut at the Masters.
Metropolitan Amateur Again Goes Public Since its start, the Metropolitan Amateur Championship has primarily taken place at private clubs – something changing this summer, when it returns to a public facility. From Aug. 1 to 3, Eureka’s Aberdeen Golf Club hosts the 19th edition of the area’s most coveted trophy, the Jim Tom Blair Trophy. “We are extremely honored and excited to be hosting the 19th Metropolitan Amateur Championship,” Greg Jansen, Aberdeen’s general manager, says. “Knowing that Aberdeen will be [only] the third public facility to host this great championship makes it even more special. We are very much looking forward to having the region’s best amateurs compete on the course we love so much.” The links-style course, designed by Gary Kern and

played at a par 71, can stretch to more than 7,200 yards. Known for its firmness and winds, Aberdeen emulates the true links-style golf found in Scotland. “Aberdeen Golf Club and its owners, Rockyney and Anna Dollarhide, have supported MAGA by hosting several MAGA championships and USGA qualifiers since opening in 2001,” states Curt Rohe, executive director. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our flagship championship to Aberdeen in 2019.” At Aberdeen, Pranger will seek to become the championship’s first three-time winner. Established in 1991, a year before the MAGA’s founding, the 54hold stroke play championship provides a regional competition joining private club and public course golfers.

Ridings – previously a Pattonville graduate, now a junior at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau – is pursuing a degree in agribusiness/horticulture, with the ultimate goal of working in turfgrass management as the superintendent of a golf course. As the Null intern this year, Ridings is working with the maintenance departments of Old Warson, Algonquin and the Quarry at Crystal Springs to gain experience at both private and public club levels. Also, during his three months with the MAGA staff, Ridings is spending time conducting association championships – seeing and working with the maintenance departments to understand what MAGA asks of member clubs in preparing courses for championships.

he 2019 Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association championship season tees off with the Old Warson Cup at Old Warson Country Club in Ladue on May 4 and 5. The annual match play event features 16 of the best amateur players, invited based on their finishes on 2018 MAGA Player of the Year point standings. Among those players, the superb ’18 campaign of Drew Pranger (Glen Echo Country Club) began with capturing the match play title at Old Warson; Pranger then won the 28th Amateur Championship in August at St. Albans and earned the 2018 Player of the Year honor. As the No. 1 seed at Old Warson, he faces Frankie Thomas (Meadowbrook Country Club) in the opening round. A five-time champion in this event, Skip Berkmeyer (The Legends) ranks as the No. 2 seed; he tied for second behind Pranger in the Metropolitan Amateur and ranked as a semifinalist in the Old Warson Cup. A runner-up in 2014, Alex Cusumano (Norwood Hills) ranks as the No. 3 seed, with Kyle Szyhowski (Metropolitan Club) as the fourth seed. Quarterfinal matches take place in the afternoon on May 4. The semifinal matches start at 7 a.m. the next day, with the 18-hole final match starting circa 11:30 a.m. Spectators are welcome to attend the matches.

Kingside Diner/Kingside After Dark
E
arly in February, the chess-themed Kingside Diner breakfast-and-lunch eatery in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood expanded its profile and its concept by opening a second location, including Kingside After Dark, in Clayton. In addition to the original’s usual daytime offerings, the new establishment serves evening drinks, desserts, savory snacks and more. “We wanted to separate the daytime and nighttime concepts without them alienating each other,” owner Aaron Teitelbaum says. “It’s a dessert lounge and bar with a savory menu that has things like chicken wings, burgers and flatbreads.” The eatery, managed by D.J. Holmes, seats roughly 100 in approximately 4,500 square feet, in the space

previously occupied by Parigi. Teitelbaum redesigned the dining room with a modern, clean black-and-white theme complete with Kingside’s signature chess motif. Although the daytime menu mirrors that of the flagship location – with popular items such as biscuits and gravy and slingers – the evening focuses more on finger foods to pair with an extensive beverage list. Kingside’s executive chef, Eric Prophete, developed the set of offerings, which begins with salads and pizzas such as a Margherita topped with pizza sauce, basil, mozzarella and balsamic reduction. Popular highlights from the menu include Kingside chicken wings, dressed in such flavoring options as Buffalo, General Tso’s and bourbon sauce. The indulgent appetizer list tantalizes with fried green tomatoes, fried cheese curds and stuffed, roasted jalapeños filled with
cream cheese, bacon, green onion and green apples. Griddle burgers, another popular pick, feature a pair of 4-ounce patties, lettuce, tomato, onion and the diner’s choice of cheese on a toasted bun, served with fries. Sliders on brioche buns include portobellos with balsamic vinegar marinade, garlic aioli, arugula, tomatoes and provolone; slow-roasted pulled pork with barbecue sauce and coleslaw; and grilled chicken thighs with apricot chutney. Dessert options by pastry chef Ashley Kisker include salted caramel bread pudding, as well as fried banana bread with caramelized bananas. Guests can choose from additional menu highlights like flourless chocolate torte with Bing cherry compote, white-chocolate mousse and toasted almonds; maple-pecan pie cheesecake; and buildyour-own waffles with toppings like Oreo crumbles,

cheesecake crumbles and fresh strawberries. Tony McCain, the bar manager, offers a program of wine, beer and cocktails such as the Matcha Collins, with vodka, matcha green tea, ginger syrup and fresh lemonade. Dessert cocktail choices are an espresso martini with Stoli Vanil vodka, fresh-brewed espresso and Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur, while boozy shakes include a brandy Alexander with brandy, dark crème de cacao and white crème de cacao. Nitro coffee cocktails, dessert wines and ports are also available. Kingside After Dark makes a sublime spot to indulge in a smorgasbord of finger foods before catching True West from the St. Louis Actors’ Studio. “A customer posted the best comment that I’ve heard yet, that Kingside is the place to hang out on a Saturday night and visit again the next day for breakfast,” Teitelbaum says. “It’s the restaurant that’s got everything anybody would really want.”

Story: Austin is working on his latest screenplay while housesitting for his mother in the suburbs, roughly 40 miles east of Los Angeles. His wife and children have remained at his home in Northern California, so Austin is using this solitude to hone his script for producer Saul Kimmer while his mom vacations in Alaska. He’s interrupted in his thoughts by the arrival of his intransigent older brother, Lee. The latter has a knack for being annoying and quickly wears on Austin’s patience with his incessant chatter and frenetic behavior. Badgering Austin about the writer’s latest “period piece,” Lee proclaims that he has ideas, too, which might make for a good movie. When Saul arrives to discuss business aspects of Austin’s script, he good-naturedly agrees to listen to Lee’s idea as well. To Austin’s astonishment, Saul and Lee arrange to meet the next morning to play golf and talk more about Lee’s idea. Lee returns from golf and tells Austin that Saul likes Lee’s idea for a modern Western about the “true West” – and that Saul wants Austin to work on the script. Shocked and angered, Austin refuses until Saul himself stops by and says that, yes, he really thinks Lee’s idea can sell tickets and wants Austin to work on the script along with his own current project. When Austin vehemently refuses, Saul rescinds his offer for Austin’s original script, something Lee had hinted might happen. The surreal has become a hellish reality for Austin. He’ll get his revenge, though: If Lee can make a living at Austin’s occupation, what’s to prevent Austin from turning to crime to “show up” his wastrel brother? And what will Mom have to say about any of this? Highlights: St. Louis Actors’ Studio revives one of master playwright Sam Shepard’s finest works as a fitting piece of its “Blood Is Thicker Than Water” 12th season. Director William Whitaker and his agreeable cast and crew combine for a rollicking romp through scary Shepard territory in the troupe’s solid production. Other Info: Shepard was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1983 for this bizarre, funny and disturbing look at the fringes of society, both geographically and psychologically. Shepard’s characters, such as those in other of his works (like Buried Child, Fool for Love and Curse of the Starving Class), are often on the edge of mayhem and volcanic violence, at arm’s length from civil society. A number of notable stars have portrayed the roles of Lee and/or Austin since the two-act work debuted in San Francisco in 1980. Gary Sinise and John Malkovich paired in a memorable production that moved from Chicago to Off-Broadway in 1982, where it ran for 762 performances. Peter Coyote, Tommy Lee Jones, Peter Boyle, James Belushi, Randy Quaid, Dennis Quaid, Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly all have

taken turns, as well, with Hoffman and Reilly memorably switching parts occasionally in the 2000 revival. Isaiah Di Lorenzo masterfully captures the manic and dangerous elements in Lee’s deranged character in this presentation. His Lee attacks the stage, jumping around with the attention span of a 5-year-old, living on impulses rather than any semblance of maturity. William Humphrey depicts Austin satisfactorily as the more mature of the two brothers, while also showing Austin’s gradual descent into decadence with convincing aplomb, highlighted by a hilarious scene with a cornucopia of “hot” toasters that underscores Shepard’s off-kilter naturalism. William Roth and Susan Kopp offer a pair of effective portrayals of the amiable Saul and the long-suffering mother, respectively. Whitaker maintains a comfortable pace, allowing his players to settle into their characters without disturbing the flow of Shepard’s manic study. Patrick Huber’s terrific set uses every inch of the cozy Gaslight Theater stage to represent the mother’s basic, ranch-style kitchen, complete with green appliances (save a sturdy, old white refrigerator), with plenty of counter space for sundry toasters that are put to the test in the second act. Shaun Sheley adds the effectively harrowing fight choreography between the mismatched brothers. Or are they brothers? One could argue that Lee and Austin form two sides of the same person and that True West concerns a family as much as one man’s psychosis. Either way, True West seems as much a gem now as it was nearly 40 years ago, as evidenced by the St. Louis Actors’ Studio’s sharply etched rendition.

Inspired by the emergence of museums and pop-ups dedicated to giving visitors the best selfie backgrounds, two sisters-in-law created The Selfie Room in St. Louis.
T
en years ago, would you have believed that there would be museums dedicated to selfies? Embracing the ever-rising social media wave in new and innovative ways, these spaces are more interactive than typical galleries and exhibitions at other museums – and are instead tailored to provide the most dynamic backdrops for visitors to snap picture-perfect photos. Inspired by the emergence of popular sites like the Museum of Ice Cream popping up on the East and West coasts, sisters-in-law Erika and Christa Klotz decided to pursue an idea of their own: The Selfie Room. They’re no strangers to owning businesses, either. Erika Klotz has a tech startup called PopBookings, and Christa Klotz is the president of Painted Clover, a BYOB paint-and-sip studio. The pair were at a weekly family dinner in November 2018, and while everyone else was watching football, they began to mull over an idea together: What if they were the first ones to open a selfie-oriented space in St. Louis? Although they both live in Kansas City, Erika Klotz went to Saint Louis University and knew the area would embrace the idea. “We’re both business owners, and it was kind of a slow time [of year],” she says. “We decided we should start a project together, and by the time the game was done, we had a full plan of how to proceed.” With the help of an uncle with St. Louis commercial real estate connections, the Klotzes were able to find the perfect location for their museum downtown at 1424 Washington Ave., steps from The Last Hotel and the City Museum. Just a few months after the pair had the idea, The Selfie Room made its debut in St. Louis’ historic garment district in early February. The selfie museum offers an all-ages experience for $30, and visitors can bring their own camera and changes of clothes to get flawless photos in perfect lighting. The sisters-in-law bill The Selfie Room as the perfect place for nights out, birthday parties, influencers, photographers, private events and just general photo shoots. Sessions are typically around an hour, Erika Klotz says, but there’s no time limit on admission. “Generally speaking, a lot of our clients will walk through first, then start from the back and move toward the front,” she says. “We have a powder room if you want to switch outfits or style yourself. It’s a fun experience, but also good for photographers who want to do a full-production shoot.” The Selfie Room offers 12 unique rooms, and each of these spaces has its own theme. The pair partnered with Henry Kitchen and Bath to create a rubber ducky room, and other spaces feature a pool-sized ball pit, colorful backdrops and oversized props. Erika Klotz says since they’re both creative individuals, she and her sister-in-law put together all the themes themselves and spent a lot of time on Pinterest combing for ideas. The current room themes won’t be there for long, however. The Klotzes aim to switch out their spaces quarterly and are already planning for summer spaces like a beach ball-themed room. Swapping out the spaces regularly, Erika Klotz says, ensures that The Selfie Room isn’t a one-time experience. “We want to be a staple in downtown,” she adds. The Selfie Room plans to host monthly events to attract visitors to the space, like a “dog day” event in March where customers could bring their pups to get in on the selfie action. In fact, the pair’s April event, scheduled for the 27th, will be a ’90s-themed party, featuring music from the decade, goody bags and activities. The Klotzes have high hopes for their new venture and hope to expand in St. Louis and even in other cities. But for now, they say that being located right on Washington Avenue is perfect. “[Because] we’re close to the City Museum, visitors can pair [The Selfie Room] with their City Museum experience, since they’re already planning to play,” Erika Klotz says. “We’re also right across from The Last Hotel, so out-of-towners can experience it and the nightclub scene surrounding it.” Overall, though, she says the museum’s first few months in business have been a hit. “People are loving it,” Erika Klotz says. “It’s a millennial playground.” The Selfie Room, 1424 Washington Ave., St. Louis, 636-299-0449, theselfieroom.com

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne
2017 ROUTESTOCK, ROUTE 121 CHARDONNAY – CARNEROS, CALIFORNIA Grape: 100% Chardonnay Winemaker: Vance Rose Aged: 8 months in French oak, 12 percent new Approximate retail price: $18 Website: wilsondaniels.com/winery/routestock TASTING NOTES: Color: Golden straw, bright and reflective Aroma: Rich and buttery, honey, lemon curd, pineapple with a touch of ginger Taste: Evenly balanced with luscious fruit tempered by strong acidity, modestly boasting a bit of oak
R
outeStock prides itself on producing the finest classic varietals from West Coast regions that will best represent the wines created there. Playing on the “root stock” association to viniculture, the
vintner names all of its wines after the correlating popular “routes” – highways and byways – traversing each region. Route 121 goes through the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area, or AVA, better known simply as Carneros, and passes through many of the vineyards used to produce its chardonnay. California’s Carneros region lies at the southernmost tips of Sonoma and Napa, straddling both of those other regions. Its cooler climate and clay soils make it a perfect growing area for pinot noir and chardonnay. Carneros received its own AVA in 1983 and, by the ’90s, had more than 6,000 acres dedicated to wine-growing. Chardonnay has achieved its reputation as such an extraordinary varietal not only for its flavor and attributes but also for its versatility and ability to be expressed in diverse ways. It remains one of the few white varietals that can undergo malolactic fermentation (a secondary fermentation whereby malic acid becomes lactic
acid, resulting in a less crisp, creamier structure) and oak regimens. Chardonnay can range from crisp, clean, refreshing wines with Granny Smith apple and lemon flavors to rich, buttery and oak-driven wines with hints of vanilla, toast and tropical fruits. The RouteStock Route 121 Chardonnay makes an impeccable example of wine forged from the center of those two extremes. Only 12 percent new French oak for aging and a partial malolactic fermentation yield a balanced, elegant and easy-drinking wine displaying subtle hints of butter and oak underneath delicious fruit and very slight spice. Food Pairings: Enjoy this wine with cream pastas, pan-roasted whitefish or salmon, roasted chicken, chowder or soft cheeses – or easily consume it on its own on the patio or by the pool.
