FindingYourTherapistFit
ByConnieMitchellAboutoneineveryfiveAmericanadults liveswithmentalillness,accordingto theNationalInstitutesofHealth.For many,treatmentismostsuccessful withacombinationofmedical,lifestyleand cognitiveapproaches.Learningtomanagestress, anxietyanddepression–whethertheymanifest asamild,naggingsenseofuneaseorasevere disorderthatdisruptsdailylife–iscrucialto overallwell-being.Butsometimes,findingagood therapistwhocanhelpisachallenge.
“Typically,oneshouldconsiderseekingtherapy whentheirmentalhealthsymptomsareaffecting thethingstheyneedorwanttodoinlife–for example,functioningathome,atwork,socially or[with]hobbies,”saysErinLawton,directorof theWashingtonUniversityPsychologicalService Center.“And,ofcourse,thatwouldincludewhen someone’shealthorsafetyisatrisk,asmightbe thecasewithsuicidalthoughts,eatingdisorders orthosesortsofsymptoms.”

THE MARFAN FOUNDATION
14TH ANNUAL HEARTWORKS GALA
The cold weather couldn’t put a damper on the Marfan Foundation’s 14th annual Heartworks gala, held on March 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. To kick off the night, those in attendance enjoyed cocktails, light appetizers and a silent auction, with the subsequent dinner and program honoring awardees Reed Pyeritz and Sanjeew Bhalla. After dinner, guests cut up to the tunes of party band Groovethang. Proceeds from the event go toward helping the Marfan Foundation provide life-saving and life-enhancing programs and services for people with Marfan, Loeys-Dietz, Vascular Ehlers-Danlos and related genetic aortic and vascular conditions.
This event brings out the community. Doctors, community members, affected individuals, business people, philanthropists – they all support the Foundation at Heartworks tonight. [The gala] grows awareness, enhances education and really builds the community.
