8970 Moydalgan, Ladue The extensive updates to this classic Bernoudy embrace the original elements of the home, designed to fit the contours of the property. Expansive windows form exterior walls in all of the main rooms of the home creating a sense of spaciousness, which seems to extend onto the private terraces and beautiful gardens beyond. Brick, glass and distinctive wide wood decorative panels define the exterior and are also used inside so that, once again, you can’t tell where the exterior ends and the interior begins. In addition to the main room and dining space, the cook’s kitchen with adjacent hearth room, private den with fireplace and 4 bedrooms and 3 ½ baths complete the first floor. There is an additional bedroom, bath and family room in the lower level. The modern architectural design is in harmony with sophisticated surrounding landscape in this prime Ladue location.

What’s your favorite tequila or tequila-based cocktail (see page 83)?
Serving the St. Louis Area
DIANE ANDERSON Anyone who knows me knows I love my tequila. I have to say, one of my favorites is Patrón – and the best way for me to enjoy my drink is poured over ice, and I’m good to go!
DAWN DEANE I’m a sucker for anything with lime in it – so the margarita has always been my go-to tequila concoction, which just happens to go perfectly with my favorite kind of food: Mexican!
DENISE KRUSE I just involuntarily shuddered at the question. I had a 13-year vomit-free streak until I was introduced to the tequila sunrise in college, and it turned me into such a tequila curmudgeon.

EDITOR IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE, IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SHARE THE STORY behind Gladitood, a St. Louis-based crowdfunding platform for nonprofits and communities to raise money and rally volunteers for projects. Its chief executive officer and co-founder, Ryan Brennell, envisioned the site after a school trip to Samoa, and says the organization was founded to help people all over the world. We hope this story, which starts on p. 74, will inspire you to reach out and make a difference in the world, too. In our Abode section, LN contributing writer Brittany Nay shares the story of Jermain “Mwanzi” Todd, a Toronto-born, St. Louis-based craftsman whose work is not only exquisite, but also environmentally sustainable. Turn to p. 38 to read about Todd’s journey in creating gorgeous furniture – including pieces you’ve likely seen at local restaurants. Lastly, I must warn you about this week’s dinner portion of Dinner & A Show, which features Vernon’s BBQ & Catering in University City (p. 80). Blame it on my love for barbecue – and editing the story before lunch probably didn’t help – but Matt Sorrell’s review had my mouth watering and my stomach rumbling for Vernon’s. You can bet that I’ll be stopping in soon to get a taste myself, and hopefully Matt’s review will inspire you to do the same. All the best,
Alecia Lassing

HEALING By Amanda Dahl | Photos courtesy of Maryville University’s Kids Rock Cancer
aryville University’s Kids Rock Cancer (KRC) provides a unique way for children combating cancer to express their feelings in messages of hope, healing and inspiration through music. Especially for children still trying to grow up, the emotional impact of cancer can be as devastating as the disease. Sharing their struggles with others allows them to cope with all of the emotions involved in a battle of this magnitude. “Licensed music therapists – our alums – work with children at cancer-treatment and support centers to help provide both a distraction and positive point in their lives through therapeutic songwriting,” Liz Haynes, director of Special Programs at Maryville University, says. The pioneering program has helped more than 500 children since its creation in 2009. “Maryville’s music therapy program is the only one of its kind in St. Louis, and Kids Rock Cancer is unique nationally; it’s more than just writing a song; it’s therapeutic,” says Tom Eschen, VP for Institutional Advancement at Maryville. “We hear from parents all the time that writing and singing their song is the first time their children are able to articulate their feelings about the difficult things they are going through.” With services provided at no cost, KRC is funded through donations, and the support starts at home. The Maryville community has enthusiastically embraced the program with student-run projects and fundraising at athletic events and more. And through individual donations, special events and strategic partnerships with organizations like Emerson and Moneta Group, KRC raises funds and awareness of music therapy as an effective intervention. Following a world-premiere kickoff at The Chase Park Plaza Cinema, a documentary on KRC, narrated by Bob Costas, has aired on PBS with a potential national audience of more than 200 million viewers. KRC also hosts annual benefit concerts at The Sheldon, most recently with the neo-British Invasion band Flaming Pie.
In December, KRC partnered with The Fabulous Fox for a benefit concert featuring the legendary rock band Heart. “VIP ticketholders enjoyed a meetand-greet with Annie and Nancy Wilson, who filled the space with high energy,” Haynes says. KRC was a beneficiary of another sold-out show, Tyler Perry’s Madea on the Run, which included a post-show cast party. “Last summer, we partnered with Cardinals Care and Mending Faces on a ‘Charity Triple Play Art Auction,’” Haynes shares. “Attendees bid on autographed Cardinals-themed portraits.” The artwork, created by Maryville students and faculty, was reproduced as souvenir postcards, available at various donation levels. When the Cardinals go up against the Pittsburgh Pirates at the July 7 afternoon home game, they once again take on the important mission of KRC. The Cardinals’ Kids Day Out features tickets to the game, access to a kids’ activity area and vouchers for a hot dog, chips and soda, with proceeds benefitting KRC. “Families can expect a balloon artist, face painters and musical entertainer, Babaloo, plus more, in Riverview Corner,” Haynes says. “You can see several of the kids from our program onstage, plus one of our kids and a music therapist will be out at the game for a firstpitch opportunity.” With so many exciting events on the horizon, it is incredibly easy to get involved with this life-changing program. From a Pottery Sale and Show on May 13 at Parker’s Table at Oakland and Yale, featuring a wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres, to Kids Day Out at the ballpark, the opportunities are endless. And as Haynes says, the mission is compelling. “Our slogan sums it up perfectly: ‘Medicine heals the body, music heals the soul.’” Contact Liz Haynes at 314-529-9580 or visit kidsrockcancer.org to learn more.

Access Academies
Ending the Cycle of Poverty Through Education Since 2005, over 500 low-income, first-generation students from the most underserved areas of the city of St. Louis have received a top-quality, faith-based education, regardless of race, ethnicity or religious affiliation. ACCESS Academies is a partner with three Archdiocesan schools ~ Most Holy Trinity School & Academy, St. Cecilia School & Academy and St. Louis the King School at the Cathedral. There has never been a more crucial time for educating our youth than now, and ACCESS is dedicated to 7 years of support through our Graduate Support Program. ACCESS provides a unique and challenging program to these students, built on the NativityMiguel model of an extended school day, mandatory summer school, and graduate support personnel along with programs that follow them through high school and into college. A proper education is the greatest force to end the cycle of poverty, and our Academies are proving this year after year as you can see from our results: · 98% of ACCESS Graduates are accepted to college-prep high schools. · 99% of ACCESS Students graduate from high school on time, and · 94% of ACCESS Students are admitted to college or another post-secondary institution. The ACCESS program is a lower cost alternative to operating a stand-alone private middle school, but extremely effective at the same time. It leverages current middle schools that serve as the backbone of our urban neighborhoods and supplements the program with a strong curriculum to propel our students into college-prep high schools, providing support to launch them into college. We receive no public funding. We rely on donations from St. Louisans who care about the future of their community. It’s a valuable investment. ACCESS empowers students to break the cycle of poverty through education. To learn more about ACCESS Academies, call us at 314.898.0430 or visit our website at www.accessacademies.org.

PILLAR OF STRENGTH

F
riends, guests and a host of former St. Louis Blues players gathered in the Scottrade Center. It made a fitting location for awarding the St. Louis Blues Alumni Association the Pillar of Strength Award for 2016 from Epworth Children & Family Services. Since 1988, the association has helped raise more than $750,000 for amateur hockey and more than $5 million for local charities. It was appropriate for Epworth to honor such a long-lived organization, as Epworth itself has existed for more than 150 years, providing multiple programs and services for children, youth and families in the St. Louis area and touching the lives of more than 10,000 individuals yearly. Guests browsed silent- and liveauction items while enjoying cocktails, a wine pull and a photo op with the Blues’ Zamboni. After that came a beautiful dinner and a program that featured almost enough Blues alumni to overflow the stage. Following a speaker and donations, guests were entertained by former Boston Bruin Kraig Nienhuis and the band Griffin and the Gargoyles.

When I came in and I toured the facilities and I toured the shelters, I saw the people that gave their time and energy on the front lines, helping the kids on a day-to-day basis. That’s where it really resonated for me, and that’s why I’ve become as big an advocate as I have for Epworth – it’s because it’s those people that don’t get recognized is why I’m here tonight. merican Idol contestant Brandyn Burnette and Broadway stars Kevin Spirtas and Rachel Kopf Velard numbered among the distinguished alumni of the Ladue School District who performed at the Ladue Education Foundation’s spring fundraiser, Rhythm & Hues, on April 8 at Majorette in Maplewood. With student musicians and a popular local band composed of district parents, the evening featured solos from Broadway musicals and an original song from Burnette’s upcoming album, as well as a live auction. Four retired music educators – Sandy Baldwin, Lois Percival, Jo Anne Smiley and Jim Waechter – were honored, and the 300-plus attendees had the chance to grant current music-teacher wishes. The evening paid tribute to the importance of music programming and acknowledged the thousands of talented musicians coming from the district. Co-chairing this year’s event were Amy Barnett, Erin Hereford and Wilma Yu.

BOUTIQUE SHOPPING, LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW
T
Photos and story by David Anderson
he Special Education Foundation’s Women Leaders group hosted its seventh annual boutique shopping, luncheon and fashion show on April 5 at the Sheraton Westport Chalet Hotel. The shopping component included fashion items, children’s clothing, jewelry and other accessories from more than 25 St. Louis area vendors. Details, a Town and Country clothing boutique, provided the fashions. Proceeds from the event provide scholarships for college-bound students with disabilities and beyond-theclassroom items for five Special School District schools. The group in question seeks to help the foundation to provide financial assistance to children and youth with disabilities. The not-for-profit foundation, meanwhile, assists children and youth with disabilities in areas not supported by tax dollars through scholarships, hearing aids, eyeglasses, assistive devices for those with physical disabilities, grants for innovative classroom projects, high school leadership and parent support. Co-chairing this year’s fashion show were Dana Huxley and Margaret Louvier. Suze Nall, Pamela Holman

We support projects and stand in the gap financially for children with disabilities that are in need of so much educational care. We help kids with everything they need, from scholarships to clothing and transportation. We have been supporting a number of after-school programs and stepped in for teachers who were funding these programs on their own. We have seen students excel as a result of all the additional support that has been provided.

early 300 world-renowned scientists and science advocates attended the Academy of Science of St. Louis’ 22nd annual Outstanding St. Louis Scientists Awards ceremony on April 7 at The Chase Park Plaza. Guests were treated to a cocktail hour and dinner followed by an awards ceremony. Honored in that ceremony were the following folks: Dr. Cheryl Asa received the Peter H. Raven Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr. Henry Foley received the Science Leadership Award for developing scientists in our region; and Dr. Yuanlong Pan received a George Engelmann Interdisciplinary Award, as did Dr. Gary Stormo. We have been around for 160 years doing various forms of science outreach. Our specialty right now – in addition to recognizing the wonderful group of scientists, researchers and engineers in the St. Louis area – is that we focus on the next generations of scientists and engineers. We have the greater St. Louis Science Fair, in which the three top honors students are recognized at this event. We do a lot of work with the schools and young teens to expose them to the exciting careers ahead of them! — MARY E. BURKE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

hough Peter & Paul Community Services’ Under One Roof gala is only three years old, it’s been able to do a world of good for the mission of the organization: working to end chronic homelessness in the St. Louis region. The organization reinvented the gala and brought it straight to its facilities so attendees could see firsthand the programs and services their funding helps. Peter & Paul clients attend the event and interact with attendees, part of the organization’s drive to break down stereotypes of what it means to be homeless. Susan Mintz, director of development, says that’s something that’s hugely important to the group and the gala as a whole. Proceeds from the May 21 gala will benefit Peter & Paul’s seven programs, which include an emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing and more. “The next couple of years are going to be focused on expanding our programming,” Mintz says. “Not only case management, but things like financial-literacy classes, arts programming, women’s and men’s support groups and a number of 12-step and sobriety programs to support our residents.”
Sponsors: Peter & Paul Community Services – Safe Haven at Garfield Commons. Clients and alumni of PPCS programs. Main office building, 2612 Wyoming St., St. Louis MO 63118.
The gala will take place at Safe Haven, Peter & Paul’s program designed to reach those who are chronically homeless and provide them with permanent housing. Mintz notes that events manager Emily Wanner has “an amazing committee of ladies” who transform the Safe Haven space into an elegant setting for the gala. The evening will feature a cocktail reception, silent auction, music, a three-course dinner by Westwood Catering, and a live auction and program. Wanner adds the gala will feature a performance by St. Louis native Joel Meyers, a nationally-known illusionist. “We try to bring in fresh and exciting entertainment to capture people’s attention, and Meyers really does that,” she says. “This is something we’ve never done before.”

EVERYTHING EARTHY By Robyn Dexter
T
he clients wanted a pool bathroom implemented in the lower level of their Chesterfield home, built in with their steam shower and dry sauna. Debbie Donnelly of Donnelly Interiors was up to the task. “[The clients] have kids, so they wanted a fun space for them to wash up,” Donnelly says. “They wanted it to feel rustic, since they love Colorado and a western, earthy feel.” They began from scratch with blueprints, designing the space to accommodate the sink and changing room. “We came up with [custom-made] saloon doors to make it fun for the kids,” she says. The floor is a handmade Mexican tile, inlaid with black pebbles for texture. The Mexican tile was glazed on-site after being installed, so it could be toned to the color the client wanted. The vanity is made of copper, and the mirror is made of chunks of reclaimed wood. “Everything has lots of dimensions,” Donnelly says. “Everything’s from the earth.”

ust call him Mwanzi – Swahili for “bamboo.” The tropical tree is where it all started for Jermain “Mwanzi” Todd, a Toronto-born, St. Louis-based craftsman who launched his business, Mwanzi Co., in 2005 as a bamboo plywood-andflooring wholesaler. As the company evolved into a custom-furniture business about four years later, the nickname stuck. “I believe the word bamboo always will be linked with environmental sustainability,” Todd says, “and environmental sustainability is at the core of my values as a maker of custom furniture and cabinetry.” Mwanzi Co.’s foray into woodworking came in the form of cabinetmaking – called Greenhaus Cabinets – and grew quicker than Todd could handle on his own, so he partnered with a regional cabinetry-fabrication firm while he handled the design, sales and logistics. “More importantly, it freed me up to do what I really enjoy doing: making furniture,” notes Todd, whose “handmade” tattoo emblazoned on his right hand and “maker” running the length of his right forearm says it all. The creative craftsman’s environmentally sustainable furniture-making process utilizes raw materials – such as Missouri-harvested, reclaimed and repurposed ash, sycamore, walnut and white oak woods, as well as recycled steel – all sourced from within an hour of St. Louis. “I focus on the uniqueness of the wood I’m working with and let it shine through and guide me during the making process,” Todd says. That process depends on the project, as Todd recalls some pieces of furniture taking more than 1,000 cuts and two months to complete. Although now slightly more than a decade old, Mwanzi expanded in 2007 to offering a made-to-order, rustic contemporary furniture line called FeRRUM. The majority of Todd’s time is spent designing and constructing custom residential and commercial pieces. Each year, he tackles four residential projects and three commercial projects at once, in what he calls his own “sawdust bubble” amid the exposed brick and cement floors of his industrial-like design studio on Lemp Avenue. For residential clients, designing kitchen, dining room or bedroom furniture – from benches, credenzas, tables and chairs to dressers, armoires and beds – starts with the style a given client desires for a given space: traditional or contemporary. Next, the focus shifts to the color (wood species or wood stain) and design (shape) of the piece. “There are no boundaries – this is not like going to a store and buying what they have on display for you – it’s about getting exactly what you want, and it’s my job to steer things in a direction that will be functional and practical for their budget,” Todd says. “If my client does not have a style in mind, I tend to blend contemporary lines with high-character wood grain.” For example, for one St. Louis client, Todd handmade a 68- by 30-inch live-edge sycamore coffee table with waterfall sides from the reclaimed wood of a tree felled to make space for a campus building project at Washington University in St. Louis. Mwanzi also has a long list of commercial projects, which include custom cabinetry and stools for Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.; a custom countertop for Pastaria; tables, chairs, stools and bar tops for the downtown location of The Wheelhouse; and a custom e-bar desk for the downtown Holiday Inn St. Louis. “I’ve outfitted entire interiors of many restaurants – the bar, tables and chairs – [often] more than 100 pieces,” Todd says. Todd and his handmade pieces recently caught the attention of athletic-footwear retailer New Balance. As a furniture-maker in America, Todd is a featured model for the top brand’s new 2016 line – Made in U.S.A. Distinct Collection: Explore by Sea. Todd says he strives to capitalize on every chance to better his brand, and the global campaign was one of those opportunities: “I’m very happy with how my company has been for several years. I want to continue to get better at my craft and my brand.” Mwanzi Co., 3412 Lemp Ave., St. Louis, 314-200-4123, mwanzi.com

Mwanzi Goes Global
A
s he crafts custom furniture in his St. Louis studio, Mwanzi Co. founder Jermain Todd can be seen standing in a pair of gray suede New Balance shoes with brown Horween leather accents, a new design from the footwear giant’s 2016 line – Made in U.S.A. Distinct Collection: Explore by Sea. Todd was selected as the sole model for the athletic shoe company’s new Made in the U.S.A. global campaign – running online, in magazines and on billboards – after its public relations department found him online and became inspired by his 10-year-old custom furnituremaking company. “I helped them put together a campaign for the Made in U.S.A. Distinct Collection: Explore by Sea, which went global in March, and will run for the entire year,” Todd says. As an American furniture-maker, Todd proved to be the perfect model to debut the new nautical-influenced shoe collection, as New Balance has a longstanding commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing – its employees construct shoes in its Lawrence, Massachusetts, facility. In fact, New Balance is the only major company to make or assemble more than 4 million pairs of athletic footwear per year in the U.S. Todd is proud to be part of that homemade, handcrafted philosophy – the same one he employs every day with Mwanzi.

AGENT PROFILE
The Kirk Holton Team
By Amanda Dahl
With family as its foundation, The Kirk Holton Team brings a foolproof formula to the real estate industry. Dedicated and diligent in their service to clients, the husband, wife and daughter group work together to build strong relationships with each client. Vicki Kirk Holton gave LN the scoop on their formula for success. “I think I was intrigued by [the real estate business] even as a child. I remember my grandmother always being busy showing homes to clients, and my aunt also was an agent in Santa Barbara with Sotheby’s,” Holton shares. Despite her early familiarity with the industry, Holton deviated from the family tradition to pursue teaching. After earning her degree in education, she taught for a couple of years but soon realized real estate was undoubtedly the better fit for her. “It’s a business of helping people and working out issues – and I enjoy that challenge. I kind of grew into the business … loved it … but soon realized it was a true full-time commitment,” Holton says. “I had five

children, but by teaming up with other agents, I was able to make it work. The business has been extremely rewarding. Beyond that, it is so gratifying to have created a team with my daughter and husband. Our newest member, Matt, is talented and fits in with the team so perfectly.” Creating a partnership with her nearest and dearest has allowed Holton to thrive in a positive environment and foster client relationships with an approach built on diligence and integrity. Her husband, Dave, has an extensive background in real estate and her daughter, Katie Kirk, has proven to be a natural. “Keeping a positive attitude and continuing to push forward is essential to being a successful real estate agent,” she says. This attitude of “never give up” ensures that each

Sarah Speck of Batch No. 8
By Denise Kruse Small-batch, limited-run or specialty products dominate nearly every retail sector these days, from food and drink to fashion. St. Louis native and fashion designer Sarah Speck has recently begun making her mark in women’s fashion with the debut of her clothing line, Batch No. 8, with design and production based out of Speck’s current home base in Dallas, Texas. With two debut collections already launched, Speck’s designs exude equal parts femininity and strength, playfully toeing the line between classic and modern looks. Tell us about your connection to St. Louis. I was born and raised in St. Louis – went to Oakville High School and undergrad at Washington University in St. Louis’ art school, where I completed a degree in the fashion-design program. I started working at Brown Shoe Co. [now Caleres] in their private-label division, and while I was working, I also went back to school and got my MBA at Wash U. Where did the name “Batch No. 8” come from? My husband and I like the concept of artisan quality that goes into small-batch distilling, typically in the spirits and whiskey industry, really dedicating a lot of focus on making limited-edition, specialty items
that are different than the mass merchandise you can find. These items usually have added artisan touches – there’s always something unique and special about them. The original name was “Small Batch No. 8,” and I shortened it. The number 8 is a lucky number. Each of the collections I’ve created so far has eight total looks. How would you describe your clothing? It’s a women’s-contemporary line; it’s modern and feminine. The focus is on the extra details and highquality textiles. I’m really trying to make something modern and contemporary without it being stark and plain, contrasting these two ideas. I really like the idea of juxtaposing opposing ideas – if you look at some of the collection, you’ll see that if the pieces have a simplistic shape, the material is typically more detailed. My goal is to create balance. What is your design inspiration? I’ve always had this interest in interior design and decoration in addition to fashion, and I’m exploring how all these things kind of interrelate. This merging of interior design and fashion design is a cool concept that really applies to the line – a lot of the details are
inspired by it. In interior design, you have two levels of appeal – the room should be appealing from a distance, to get the person to walk in. It should also be appealing once you get inside – each individual piece should be interesting as well. I like to apply that to my design. Overall composition – you see it on a rack and think, “Oh, that’s a pretty dress,” then when you get closer to appreciate the individual elements. Sometimes the most interesting feature is the absence of something – like an arch doorway or a window [in interior design]. Similarly, in my collections, several pieces play with negative space – cutouts and design lines create an absence of space to draw your eye. What’s behind your decision to name the collections in numerical order rather than by season and year? A lot of the Batch No. 8 items are intended to be seasonless. Within each collection, there are a few pieces that may pull one direction or another in terms of seasonality, like lighter fabrics that might suggest spring, but my intent is to have smaller drops that happen more frequently, as opposed to a huge collection for spring or a huge collection for fall. It plays with the theme of being small-batch, making purposeful, intentional choices. Where are your collections available? Right now, primarily e-commerce – you can view the collection on the website, and the items are available for purchase through Nineteenth Amendment, a fashion company partnered with Macy’s, based out of New York. I would love to bring my collection back to St. Louis – I think boutiques are a great opportunity, because it opens up the opportunity for more than just shopping: You go in, have a bottle of Champagne, and you hang out – it’s a fun experience.

LN details where to find the best pieces to complete your look for derby day.
T
he horses and jockeys at Churchill Downs may get their two minutes of glory during the Kentucky Derby proper, but it’s no secret that the true showstoppers of the day are the elegant, elaborate and sometimes over-the-top headwear fashions that have been signature to that event since its founding in 1875. The tradition of dressing in British morning dress, or “formal day dress,” has existed since the first Derby Day, with women donning fine and often embellished headwear, furs and gloves under lacy parasols and men sporting elegant hats, crisp coattails and fine cravats. Whether you’re making the trek to the Bluegrass State or attending a local Derby-themed soirée on May 7, employees from three shops here have given us insight into this year’s headwear fashions, ensuring that you can be dressed to the nines and topped with a statement piece that shows off a little personality. After all, a mint julep just doesn’t taste as good if you’re in jeans.
The VinTage haberdashery Ashley Preuss, manager As a vintage store, we see customers looking for fabulous vintage hats, or in some cases, an entire vintage-inspired ensemble. For the Derby, the bigger the hat, the better, in our opinion. We offer a selection of both rental and retail hats, from wide-brim hats with decorative flowers to smaller styles with netting and a single flower or bow. Since the Derby has existed since the 1870s, people have the opportunity to focus on any particular decade since then if they choose – they can have fun with it. Beautiful springcolored 1940s floral dresses or 1950s silhouettes are two fun options for ladies wanting to don more than just a hat. Gloves are a great touch, as well as a period hairstyle. For men, a straw boater hat or fedora are staple pieces to mix with a bow tie and pinstripe blazer for that iconic Derby Day look. Men can go for a classy-casual vibe or step it up with a two- or three-piece suit. The options are quite endless, as there is more than 100 years of fashion to play with. I someone comes to the store, there are usually three different styles that I try to present If th them. The first and most popular is the classic one for a gentleman, the straw boater hat, w which features a flat crown and flat brim with a red-and-navy club stripe band. It’s the iconic hat you see many gentlemen wearing to the Derby. The second hat I have is one that we call the Optimo Chan – a straw hat with a nice, wide brrim, also featuring the red-and-navy club stripe. The third one I really like to show people is our S ur Slammin’ Sam, a coconut straw hat. It’s a nice, very summery style that is customizable w different bands and has a nice shape that fits everyone. Many gentlemen like that with th can match it up with their outfits. It’s light, too – it’s a hat you can wear casually in the they summ ummertime, as well. If the guy’s looking to stand out a little, we have plenty of options – we have a lot of hats cu custom-made for us, so we have exclusives that only we offer. We do a lot of customization options such as different bands or feathers, and we have a seamstress on staff so we can do bindings on the brim or cool designs. In store, we have about 15 different styles of hats and fascinators [headwear frequen ently ds accented by a feather or flower], and each style comes in multiple colors. Our top brand from for Derby hats are August Hat and our Nordstrom house brand. Most styles are madee fr ing th the hat sinamay, a fabric made from banana-plant fibers. This fabric is very strong, allowing to hold its shape firmly. Many of our hats are adjustable, as well. arer This year is all about the fascinator. The versatility of the fascinator allows the wear to show off your hairstyle and avoid hat hair. Feathers, bows and other embellishmentts mmend are must-haves in any Derby hat – the bigger, the better. For colorful hats, we recomm sticking with a solid dress – or with a colorful dress, go for a solid hat. The hat should always be the main attraction of the outfit, so there’s no need to goo ccrazy simple with jewelry and other accessories. Finish off the look with a new trend this year: thee simp skinny scarf, like the one pictured on this page by Halogen. The scarf pairs perfectly wiith a dd denim V-neck dress and statement hat, but it can be worn casually as well with a T-shirt and jacket after the races are over. m.com Nordstrom Saint Louis Galleria, 1453 Saint Louis Galleria #240, 314-884-4900, nordstrom.c

We have lost football. We don’t need to be losing our long and storied history of hosting some of the biggest events in sports. But if improvements aren’t made, we will.

T
he Scott Trade Center is not something we discuss often, but it has to be taken care of. The seats have not changed, the HVAC is ancient, and that video board – oh, that video board. It’s the second-smallest in the NHL, and it reminds me of Grandmother’s Magnavox. It’s not high-definition, and it’s grainier than a granola bar. It’s time; however, is it the right time? We were just treated very poorly by the NFL – and the one and only Stan Kroenke. Much of the Rams’ move was about the Edward Jones Dome’s condition, but people don’t want to spend a dime of public money to help out sports teams. I get that, but this situation is different. The Blues are not threatening a move. They’re a firstclass organization, and they simply want improvements to the Scott Trade Center. In the last four years, the

It’s not very difficult to make the NHL and NBA playoffs – everybody practically does. Isn’t it interesting that neither of Stan Kroenke’s teams did?
Blues have sunk $8.5 million into the facility. This is unique, as almost every other facility around the country has public money set aside for improvements. The Scott Trade Center stages about 125 events a year. The Blues use it 40 percent of the time. We have lost football. We don’t need to be losing our long and storied history of hosting some of the biggest events in sports. But if improvements aren’t made, we will.

Why do coaches have to be so boring after a game? You can be colorful and interesting. Is being dull a qualification for the job?
5
I am a big fan of high school sports, but it’s getting sad that a high school coach’s success comes down to how he or she recruits. Recruiting is not supposed to be allowed, yet it goes on. Coaches who recruit, win. In the old days, high school coaches were judged by how they coached.
THOUGHTS
1
I love the Travis Ford hire by SLU, but some didn’t. SLU just went 8-28 in the conference the last two years. Travis has had ten 20-win seasons and been to six NCCA tourneys. Tom Izzo did not apply for the job.

The hockey playoffs are the most intense sporting events around. I love the fact that after a grueling, nasty and physical seven-game series where the players literally hate one another’s guts, they line up and shake hands after it’s over.

Bullying: Antisocial Media
I
was recently a victim of cyberbullying. I had a pleasant encounter with a celebrity. I tweeted about our meeting and her inspirational message. Within minutes, I was ruthlessly attacked by hundreds of posts from her anti-fans. In the same week, a good family friend, 14-year-old political blogger Gabe Fleisher, was attacked on social media. He made a humorous and appropriate comment about a political candidate. His remark was assaulted with a string of criticisms and personal attacks. The most disturbing part of both of these incidents is that the online bullies were adults. One would hope that as people mature, they stop engaging in harmful, immature conduct that’s most typically associated with behaviorally challenged youth. Not the case, sadly. I was able to turn off my social media and understand that bully behavior reflects on its perpetrator. Many kids, however, can’t move on and can even experience mental health issues as a result of attacks like those described. And online taunting continues to grow as a problem; research by UCLA psychologists indicates that nearly half of all teenagers have experienced cyber assaults. Virtual victims are in a fragile state. A parent’s initial job is to listen and empathize. Although many may wish to solve the problem, your child may want just a shoulder to cry on. Gently ask probing questions (who, how long, etc.) and discuss ways to better the situation. One possible strategy to assist involves contacting the offender’s parent. This is a good suggestion only if you know him or her and can have a meaningful conversation. If, on the other hand, you suspect either you or the other adult may become inappropriately upset, avoid this. Another option involves contacting a school official. Although all schools have cyberbully policies, it remains important to ask what steps will be taken and how your child will be protected from future attacks. Also, before proceeding, both you and your child should be comfortable reporting the incident. Last but not least, block the bully from your child’s social media, and make sure your child does not retaliate. The bully’s goal often focuses on provoking a reaction. Responding to a negative post may often make the situation worse. Despite all the anti-bullying education, these behaviors continue. The best way for a parent to ensure a child’s happiness is to continually connect with him or her. Build trust so your kids can comfortably speak to you about almost any topic. And most important, set a good example!
The best way for a parent to ensure a child’s happiness is to continually connect with him or her. Build trust so your kids can comfortably speak to you about almost any topic.

ast summer, The Muny set out to raise $10,000 to upgrade its wheelchairs so that all who attend the beloved outdoor amphitheater’s shows could have an enjoyable experience. Two weeks and $3,616 into the two-month-long campaign, an anonymous donor pledged the remaining $6,384 needed to reach the goal. The fundraiser was made possible by St. Louis-based Gladitood, an online crowdfunding platform for nonprofits to raise funds and rally volunteers around their projects. “The generous gift came from a man who had held season tickets to The Muny with his wife for years,” says Ryan Brennell, Gladitood chief executive officer and co-founder along with partners Geoff Raymond and Andrew Baur. “She had recently passed away, and at the end of her life, it was The Muny’s accessibility services that had been responsible for so much of her enjoyment at the theater. When he saw this project, he knew it was how he wanted to give back to The Muny.” During the past four years, Gladitood has grown from a rudimentary concept to a company helping nonprofits raise funds and attract volunteers to complete positive projects in St. Louis and around the globe. In 2011, a school trip to Samoa sparked the concept for Brennell, who graduated from De Smet Jesuit High School. “On my second night in Samoa, there was a tsunami warning,” he says. “The warning was taken very seriously because a tsunami devastated the community I was staying with in 2009. We ran up a mountain to a safe house, and there were people lying next to the tombs of the loved ones they lost in ’09. That shook me to the core. After that week in Samoa, I wanted to create something that could help people all over the world.” So in 2012, Brennell partnered with Raymond and Baur to launch Gladitood. To raise funds, nonprofits can log on to gladitood.com and pick a specific fundraising goal tied to a particular project. Fundraisers commonly have a goal of $10,000 and a campaign length of four to six weeks, but there are no minimum or maximum limits. “This makes it easy to understand the impact of every donation,” Brennell says. “From there, we help each nonprofit craft their story and promote their campaign to ensure they meet their goal and engage current and new donors.” When the crowdfunding campaign is complete, Gladitood’s three-person staff follows up with the nonprofit to help communicate its project’s progress to donors. Nonprofits can choose between flexible and fixed funding, Brennell notes, and most choose flexible funding – they collect the amount raised whether or not the goal is reached. “For nonprofits, we help them navigate this unexplored world of online fundraising, and for donors, we make sure they understand the positive impact of their donation,” Brennell explains. Gladitood’s platform is unique in that it is exclusively for nonprofits

and, in addition to raising funds, helps organizations recruit volunteers by partnering with them to craft a message that will resonate online. They also provide a link where interested individuals can click to receive more information about giving their time to the charity. In addition to impacting local nonprofits such as The Muny, Midwest Children’s Burn Camp and HavenHouse, Gladitood is connecting passionate donors to the positive causes of charities around the world. One such group, Micro-Financing Partners in Africa, is using Gladitood to bring a motoambulance to Uganda that will transport pregnant mothers from their villages to a hospital for less risky childbirth. “The moto-ambulance will immediately save lives,” Brennell says. Another Gladitood beneficiary is the International Peace Initiatives, supporting humanitarian causes, including an orphanage in Kenya. In 45 days, a $14,000 goal was achieved to fund the construction of a beauty salon that would double as a mentorship program for pregnant teens. “The program gives pregnant teens employment skills to support themselves and their child and teaches them how to be mentors to the young girls whose hair they’re doing,” Brennell explains. “Afterward, the founder said [to me], ‘We would not be impacting the lives of these girls without Gladitood.’” Brennell says these types of rewarding moments happen daily at Gladitood. “Every day, we get to wake up and support organizations dedicated to improving the world,” he notes. So the company’s goal in the next year is simple: impact as many new organizations as possible. “As long as we continue to work with new nonprofits, all the fun stuff like expanding our team and creating a great company culture will fall into place,” Brennell says. And in the next five years, Gladitood is aiming even higher – with a goal of becoming a philanthropic outpost on the internet. “We want to be the trusted resource for donors to make a positive impact on the causes they care about,” Brennell says. “Right now, it takes a lot of work to do the research and make sure you’re giving responsibly – especially when you’re giving large sums. We’re working to not only make that easier, but also make it really fun by giving donors the ability to follow their dollars and see the impact they’re having in real time.” Every new organization that Gladitood connects with is another opportunity to make a positive impact, Brennell says. “We feel lucky to be building Gladitood in a city with thousands of great nonprofits,” he concludes. “We’re excited about what’s on the horizon.” Gladitood, CIC @4240, 4240 Duncan Ave., Central West End, 314-312-3704, gladitood.com

Dinner ...
Vernon’s BBQ & Catering
B
arbecue continues to be one of the foundations of the local food scene. Although several places around town get the bulk of attention, and rightly so, others exist a bit under the radar of the general dining public – though they get much respect from aficionados and other ’cue pros. One such joint is Vernon’s BBQ & Catering in University City. Housed in a former garage space just north of the Delmar Loop, this gem offers all of the traditional meaty favorites diners love, as well as a few surprises. With its fine “Q” and homey, laid-back vibe, Vernon’s also provides a calming precursor to the intensity of Twisted Melodies at The St. Louis Black Repertory. It seems the calling card for most barbecue places

is their ribs. I like ribs well enough, but when I go to a new place, I prefer to sample other meaty pleasures. Vernon’s makes this easy with its “Pick 2” option ($9), which includes any two meats on the menu, excluding ribs. We did this times two, ordering the beef brisket, turkey breast, hot Italian sausage and smoked tofu (yes, you read that correctly). We tried all of them with Vernon’s homemade sauces: Little Smokey, Peachy Keen, The ‘Lou, Thai-B-Q and XXX. Cheese sauce can be had for an extra buck. The brisket was tender and literally fell apart on the fork, and although sometimes smoked turkey can get a bit dried out, Vernon’s bird was succulent and juicy. We especially liked the sausage, courtesy of DiGregorio’s
Market on The Hill. It had great texture, subtle spices and flavor for days and was, of course, perfectly smoked. Although it might seem sacrilegious to some purists, my hat is off to Vernon’s for including on its menu tofu, not exactly a ’cue staple. The tofu in question is an organic, non-GMO version from Gourmet Soy Foods in Granite City. It was tender as could be and just lightly smoked. It also paired nicely with the XXX sauce, the hottest of the bunch. Speaking of the sauces, all were great, but the ThaiB-Q really stood out. This prominent peanut sauce brought an almost pad thai taste to the meats we tried. Of course, at any good barbecue joint, sides are as important as what’s on the smoker, and we ordered

a slew of Vernon’s sides at $1.35 each: Aunt Jan’s Burnt End Beans, Sweet Corn & Peppers and Cheesy Scalloped Taters. The beans were deep, dark and delicious, with plenty of meat in the mix and a tasty balance of savory and sweetness. The cheesy potatoes are a solid choice for a starch. Pro tip: they marry nicely with some of that Thai-B-Q sauce. All of Vernon’s menu items are available either dine-in or carryout, and Vernon’s also can hook you up for all your catering needs.

Story: Donny Hathaway was born in Chicago but raised in St. Louis by his grandmother. A gospel singer, she had the lad begin taking piano lessons at age 3, forcing him to practice even when he wanted to play outside. The training, combined with Hathaway’s natural musical talent, helped him develop his skills through Vashon High School and Howard University in Washington, D.C. Before finishing his degree, Hathaway was performing in drummer Ric Powell’s jazz trio and quickly became immersed in the recording field as a composer, arranger, producer and performer. As his career was ascending, though, Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. His skills remained superb, but the demons of mental illness caught up with him on January 13, 1979, when he leaped to his death from a window at the Essex House hotel in New York City. Highlights: Hathaway’s phenomenal musical talents, successful career and tragic death are painfully re-created in Kelvin Roston Jr.’s powerful one-man play, Twisted Melodies. His current performance at The St. Louis Black Repertory is an absorbing and poignant tale, supported by Roston’s outstanding vocal accompaniment about Hathaway’s last day and what he might have thought in his final hours. Other Info: As director Ron Himes observes in his program notes, Roston first developed his story about Hathaway as an intern at The Black Rep a decade ago, when he penned Psychology of a Genius for a Black Rep competition. After moving to Chicago, Roston dusted off his brief effort a few years later and expanded it into its current, 90-minute format, which received a Jefferson Award nomination and won two Black Theatre Alliance awards and three Black Excellence awards. Twisted Melodies is performed on Jim Burwinkel’s scenic design of a late ’70s hotel room – a door at stage right where Hathaway hears the incessant pounding of men he claims are coming to get him and to drain the music from his brain. A window at stage left ominously portends the play’s outcome, and there’s also a keyboard at stage right front where Roston as Hathaway can retreat into his music for solace. Mark Wilson adds several well-selected slides in his video design, pinpointing Hathaway’s childhood with his grandmother, his duets with Roberta Flack and happier times with his wife and daughter. Most impressively, the discordant sound design conceived by Rick Sims offers an aural glimpse into the besieged mind of the musical genius. Himes’ direction is solid, although at times Roston’s script gets repetitive, going over well-worn territory. On the whole, Roston’s performance excels on two levels: in his heartfelt depiction of Hathaway’s losing
battle with his condition and imagined enemies, and in his magnificent voice, which gives proper praise to Hathaway’s rich and considerable musical talents. In the latter category, a couple of extended vocal riffs by Roston reach every corner of the spacious Edison Theatre with power and haunting conviction. He caps the evening with a superior encore performance of a Hathaway recording before tipping his cap and exiting quietly. Hathaway was a powerhouse on the jazz, blues, soul and gospel charts throughout the ’70s. He also hit the pop charts numerous times, reaching No. 2 and No. 5 in duets with college friend Flack with, respectively, “The Closer I Get to You” in 1978 and “Where Is the Love” in 1972. Many artists considered him one of the best musicians of his generation and beyond for his diverse talents. Twisted Melodies draws attention to the painful terrors of mental illness in Roston’s well-executed script, as well as a superb sampling of Hathaway’s powerful musical legacy in the playwright’s own persuasive performance.

Learn how to talk tequila at your Cinco de Mayo festivities this year and share three tequila cocktail recipes.
T
equila is one of the most complex spirits on the market. Depending on which one you choose, you’ll enjoy a spirit bursting with an array of aromas and flavors, from citrus to fresh green peppers to spring flowers and more. However, tequila also is one of the most misunderstood liquors. Countless people have told me over the years that they don’t like tequila, usually as a result of overindulging in a low-quality version. Some have the notion that tequila is “boozier” than other spirits or that drinking it guarantees a headache the next day. With Cinco de Mayo festivities upon us, I thought it best to present an overview of tequila to better understand this venerable tipple before celebrating this year.
piña, specifically the type of agave known as Agave tequilana Weber, subvariety blue. Although it looks like some sort of spiny cactus, the agave is actually part of the lily family, and it can take anywhere from eight to 20 years to mature. The heart of the plant is harvested, roasted in either an oven or an autoclave, then shredded and juiced. The juice is thereafter fermented and, finally, distilled. Just like wine, tequila reflects the terroir of the land where it was produced. The soil, microclimate, altitude and myriad other factors all affect the final product and what you sip – just as one Pinot Noir tastes different from another while still retaining the essence of that particular grape varietal.
Types of Tequila
For our purposes, these are the main categories of tequila: Mixto: This style contains a “mix” of at least 51 percent agave sugars along with assorted others. These tequilas are generally cheaper and of much lower quality. Had a bad tequila experience in college? Chances are a mixto was to blame. Another type of tequila, joven abocado, also falls into this category. When buying tequila, make sure it says “100-percent agave” on the bottle, and you’ll be assured of avoiding a mixto. Blanco (White) and Plata (Silver): As the name implies, these types of tequila are unaged. They have to be bottled within 60 days of coming off the still. Blancos are probably the most common tequilas that you’ll see in a cocktail at a bar.
Agave plants, stock photography
Reposado: This term means “rested.” Reposado tequilas spend between two and 11 months in oak barrels. The time spent in wood mellows the spirit a bit and takes off some of its rough edges. Añejo: Añejo tequilas are aged for at least one year in oak.
Tequila has been made in Mexico since the Spanish introduced the art of distillation there in the 1500s. Although the spirit is hundreds of years old, it wasn’t always popular in the United States, with the exception of certain border states. This began to change during Prohibition, when Hollywood celebrities and high-powered business types were forced south of the border to party at places like Agua Caliente, a resort in Tijuana, where they would drink tequila by itself and in cocktails. Eventually, these folks became fans and helped the spirit make its way north. Originally tequila was produced near the town of Tequila, in the state of Jalisco. Today, tequila is made in four additional Mexican states. The base for tequila is the agave plant, also known as a

Extra Añejo and Extra Aged: This relatively recent tandem category denotes tequilas that have been aged at least three years. Añejos and extra añejos are usually mellow and tailor-made for sipping neat or with a couple of ice cubes.
Tequila Cocktails Although delicious on their own, tequilas also are great for mixing. Here are a trio of classic tequila cocktails that are tasty and easy to shake up at home. These all utilize blanco tequilas, but feel free to experiment with different varieties. As always, it’s imperative to use fresh-squeezed juices to retain the best and brightest flavor.
El Diablo: I don’t know where the name for this drink originated, because it’s anything but demonic. The cassis marries nicely with the vegetal qualities of the tequila, and the ginger beer gives it just a bit of bite. ServeS | 1 | 1½ oz blanco tequila ½ oz cassis ¾ oz fresh lime juice ice splash ginger beer lime wedge (for garnish) | Preparation | In a cocktail shaker, shake all ingredients except ginger beer and lime wedge with ice. Strain into glass over ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with lime wedge.
Paloma: This cocktail originated as a simple highball, just tequila
and grapefruit soda. This version (courtesy of Simon Difford’s Cocktails: The Bartender’s Bible) adds some additional fruit juice, as well as a touch of sweetness from the agave nectar. ServeS | 1 | 2 2 ½ ¼
oz blanco or reposado tequila oz fresh grapefruit juice oz fresh lime juice oz agave nectar ice grapefruit soda grapefruit peel (for garnish)
| Preparation | In a cocktail shaker, shake all ingredients except soda and peel with ice. Strain into Collins glass over ice. Top with soda. Garnish with grapefruit peel.
Margarita: The preeminent tequila cocktail, the margarita also is one of the most abused. All too often it’s made with sticky store-bought sour mix or whipped up into a froth in a blender. The original drink is simple and elegant, on par with classics like the sidecar and the martini. ServeS | 1 | 2 oz blanco tequila ¾ oz triple sec ¾ oz fresh lime juice ice lime wheel (for garnish) | Preparation | In a cocktail shaker, shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime wheel.

anning out from the Veterans Memorial fountain, which stands poetically beautiful at the center of festivities, Art on the Square entices with inspiring artwork and activities for all. Located in Belleville, Illinois, the regional art show has drawn crowds for 15 years in a row, thanks to its impressive showcase of international and national artists and educational experiences, which teach people how to incorporate art into their everyday lives. “Belleville has always been a city that appreciates art, culture and education,” Patty Gregory, executive director of Art on the Square, says. “When the city was being built, every person in the community had to volunteer so many hours a week to [assist in building]. These values have been ingrained in the community from the very beginning.” From its inception, Art on the Square has echoed that spirit of volunteerism in an effort to show how art has the ability to speak to people from all over. “Produced all by volunteers, Art on the Square has become such a huge part of the community over the years,” Gregory says. That devotion carries through to programs that have sprung from the art show’s original concept, including an artist-in-residence at local high schools for special-needs students and a new one in the works with Wells Fargo Advisors, teaching grade schoolers about art collecting.
Taking education a step further, Art on the Square encourages creativity by bringing in students from six local schools to design and build a work of art with the help of an artist, later to be displayed at a place of the school’s choosing. “We started [something] really kind of unique in 2007 [with] a program called Sculpture in the City. We wanted to bring something to the community that shows art every day,” Gregory explains. “We started a city collection … out on the streets, [with] 2-D and 3-D works donated to the city. Forty-two sculptures have been donated.” Taking place from May 13 to 15, Art on the Square celebrates 15 years in sweeping style, with the 2016 People’s Choice Awards, an interactive art section for children and the Interior Design Stage, featuring celebrity designers from HGTV who share how to best display artwork in one’s own home. “We’re proud of the economic impact from Art on the Square,” Gregory says. “It shows how the community gets involved in the arts, and it continues to grow and grow.” For further information, contact publicity chair Kathy Kaiser at 618-444-3802 or Belleville tourism director Cathleen Lindauer at 618-233-6796. Why Should You Choose Kodner Gallery Private Sales?
Trust
Many of the Auction Houses are not locally-run. Kodner Gallery is a home-grown family business with a vested interest in the Saint Louis community since its founding nearly 50 years ago.
