Nothing fuels my state pride like Missouri’s natural beauty. From the topographical wonder that is the Ozarks to the cultural hub of Forest Park, we have plenty to brag about – and this edition of LN offers some insight on how St. Louisans can continue to take care of it.
On p. 46, contributing writer Drew Gieseke details how the inaugural winner of the Missouri Coalition for the Environment Student Environmental Action Award renovated an abandoned greenhouse on his school’s grounds. Parkway North High School student Luke Towson’s project demonstrated both stewardship and community-building – the school greenhouse club (which Towson founded) became a place for students to learn gardening skills and even grow produce to donate to local food banks.
Speaking of stewardship, columnist Charlotte Renner provides a guide to exploring Missouri’s natural areas without disrupting resident flora and fauna on p. 12. Safe to say, I’ll be referencing her review of the seven “Leave No Trace” principles all summer, especially as I explore digital editor & staff writer Amanda Dahl’s guide to area hiking trails within a 90-minute drive from Downtown. Select your perfect stroll with details on each hike’s length, difficulty and more on p. 42.
Happy exploring,
Ashley Klein, Managing Editor

Choosing a PEDIATRICIAN
By Molly Lubiewski
Planning for a new baby’s arrival is an exciting time, but it comes with many decisions to make. Choosing your little one’s health care provider is an important task and leaves many new parents navigating unknown territory.
It is important to have your pediatrician chosen before your baby arrives, because your baby’s first pediatrician appointment happens within a few days of being born. And because babies are not always on our 40-week schedule, I typically recommend parents have someone chosen by the third trimester of pregnancy.
When choosing a pediatrician for your baby, look for a provider who is in-network with your insurance, accepting new patients and boardcertified in pediatrics. (You can check certification at apb.org/verificationcertification.) Consider choosing a provider close to your home. Well baby exams are frequent, and you won’t want to drive a long distance if your child gets sick.
The best way to get personal recommendations for a pediatrician is
to ask your family and friends who have children. You can also ask your own primary care provider or obstetrician-gynecologist or search online at healthychildren.org.
Choosing a pediatrician that you trust should be a top priority. This person will be an important advisor in your child’s life – and in yours too! No question is too small or silly when it comes to your child’s well-being, so make sure your pediatrician is someone with whom you and your child feel comfortable.

Leave No Trace THIS SUMMER,
By Charlotte Renner
Last year, more than 20.2 million people visited Missouri State Parks – a 2.47 percent increase from 2022, according to Missouri State Parks data. Although it’s great that more people are taking notice of our state’s natural beauty, it’s important protect it.Here’s a refresher on the seven Leave No Trace principles, created based on research done by the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.
PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE
Do your research before you venture out into the wilderness and check the natural area’s website for any applicable advisories (such as tick awareness and flood warnings). Pack more water than you think you’ll need. If you’re going on a multi-day excursion, prepare for extreme weather and emergencies. Carry a physical map or download the trail to your phone to find your way. Lastly, decide what to do with your food waste –even fruit and veggie scraps. Contrary to popular belief, discarding food scraps in the woods is a big no-no and has lasting impacts on the environment.
TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES
The best trails and campsites are the ones you find. In other words, don’t go knocking down plants to clear a space. Instead, stick to “durable surfaces” – maintained trails, designated campsites, rock, gravel, sand and dry grasses. Walking single fie along a trail can help minimize your interference with the habitat around you.
DISPOSE WASTE PROPERLY
You know the drill: If you pack it in, pack it out. This includes the baked bean you dropped next to the campfire; marshmallow fluff left encrusted on a stick; and all trash (toilet paper included). Speaking of toilets, use the facilities when possible, and if not, deposit your waste in 6- to 8-inch-deep holes. Wash dishes using biodegradable soap and scatter your strained dishwater.
LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
We know, it can be tempting to pick up a pretty rock and take it home with you. But resist the urge and leave all natural objects as you found them. The same goes for historic artifacts and structures: Appreciate them from afar and take a picture to make the moment last. To avoid introducing non-native species, wash the bottom of your hiking shoes in between your outdoor adventures (if you’re switching rivers, wash the bottom of your kayak or canoe).
MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS
Only make campfires in permitted areas with established fire rings, fire pans or mound fires. Don’t go for a bonfire here; keep fires small and contained. Before you go to sleep, make sure the fire has burned down to ash and is completely extinguished, down to the last ember. When possible, cook on a lightweight stove and use a lantern for light.
The Rule of 200
Stay at least 200 feet away from bodies of water and trails when you do the following:
Set up camp
Deposit human waste
Wash dishes
RESPECT WILDLIFE
Viewing wildlife is one of nature’s greatest gifts, and we visitors should treat the experience with respect. Observe wildlife from a distance and take extra caution during sensitive times such as mating season. Feeding animals can damage their health, alter their natural behaviors and expose them to predators, so store all food securely. If you bring a canine companion with you, always keep them under control.
BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS
Be cognizant of other visitors by protecting the quality of their experience. Give people plenty of space to do their own thing. Let the environment’s natural symphonies prevail – leave the portable speaker at home. Soak up Missouri’s beauty and use your time outside to reconnect with nature.

Library Adventures
By Sheila Oliveri
With summer approaching, parents may be searching for engaging activities for their children, and visiting the library is a perennial favorite. Ask an adult who loves to read, and they will tell you how much the library means to them. They may even remember the excitement of getting their first library card or recall the title of their favorite childhood book.
Before giving your child the gift of a lifetime – their own library card – Ready Readers recommends sharing “The Library Book” by Tom Chapin and Michael Mark, a book that celebrates the special magic found in libraries.
The story begins with a young girl staring bleakly out her window at the gloomy, drizzly day. She decides that a trip to the library is the cure for her rainy-day blues and sings a refrain as she travels down the block: “I’m going down to the library, picking out a book – check it in, check it out. Going to say ‘Hi!’ to the dictionary, picking out a book – check it in, check it out.” The girl peruses the stacks, delighted to find characters from classic children’s literature
enjoying their own library adventures: Winnie the Pooh, Sleeping Beauty, Madeline, The Cat in the Hat, Pinocchio, the Cheshire Cat, the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Babar the Elephant, Curious George and Mother Goose.
This fun, rhythmic read was first conceived as a children’s song in the late 1970s by authors Chapin and Mark. A quick YouTube search provides the tune so your family can sing the story together. “The Library Book” also serves as a gateway to future library choices – just add one of the classic books, whose characters are featured here, to your child’s weekly checkouts. While at your local library, ask for the schedule of interactive storytimes for children of all ages to determine the best time for your next visit.
More than 15,000 children across the St. Louis area comprise the Ready Readers Storytime Program. Visit the website to become a weekly volunteer reader in an underresourced preschool classroom and share the joy and power of literacy with children at readyreaders.org.

In late February 2024, the Kirkwood High School journalism program was recognized as one of 28 winners of the First Amendment Press Freedom Award. This prestigious accolade honors public and private high schools that demonstrate a commitment to fostering and safeguarding the First Amendment rights and duties of both students and teachers.
For the students, the achievement represents the values they work hard to uphold.
“It means everything,” Mason Heller, KHS senior and editor-in-chief of The Kirkwood Call says. “We pride ourselves on our ability to publish without prior review, create issues that cover topics our student body is interested in and be free of both self and external censorship. These things are always more important than anything else we do, and it means so much to us to have been given the award once again.”
Presented by the Journalism Education Association, National Scholastic Press Association, and Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society, the award celebrates schools that support press freedom by recognizing student-run publications. Members of the presenting organizations judge submissions while winners were honored during the opening ceremony of the Spring JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention. Kirkwood High is
the most-awarded school in the country with 23 wins in 25 years.
“Of the numerous honors the KHS journalism program has received, the First Amendment Press Freedom Award is the most significant because it recognizes the importance of studentrun publications,” says Kirkwood High School publications advisor and past Kirkwood member Katie Meyers. “We are delighted to continue its rich history and legacy. This award recognizes an entire school’s dedication to teaching and supporting the First Amendment.”
Part of what makes the KHS journalism program stand out from other student-run publications is its culture of empowerment. As a result, Heller says participants “feel responsible for protecting the First Amendment and student
press rights, but also for protecting the rights of our students.” Published stories cover everything from Kirkwood School District Board of Education meetings to previews of upcoming KHS plays and more.
Kirkwood Call alums have historically carried their experience beyond high school, with many continuing their education at the University of Missouri’s renowned journalism school.
“We see more students going to Mizzou to study journalism than any other major. This year alone, there are at least half a dozen staffers headed to Mizzou to study journalism,” Heller says. “It also means that we are constantly studying our history and having discussions about how we can keep it preserved.”
With a longstanding history of success and a legacy of First Amendment advocacy, the KHS journalism program shows no signs of slowing down.
“I have seen firsthand the value of student publications as a student editor, as an adviser and as a parent,” Meyers says. “This program truly changed my life, and I’m ecstatic to be able to do that for students who have come after me.”

The 37th annual Laumeier Sculpture Park Annual Art Fair returns to St. Louis this Mother’s Day weekend. From May 10 to 12, see handmade artwork by more than 150 juried artists, listen to numerous local bands and musicians and taste food and beverages from vendors all at Laumeier Sculpture Park.
During this year’s fair, visitors can see an abundance of artists displaying and selling their works in 10 media categories, including ceramics, glass, jewelry, textiles, paintings and sculpture.
“Each year, hundreds of artists apply to Laumeier’s Annual Art Fair, with nearly 500 artists applying for this year’s fair,” says Scott Layne, director of special events for Laumeier Sculpture Park. “Artists submit images of their work, examples of their booth installations and an artist statement.”
The applicants are juried anonymously by a panel of fine art and craft professionals selected by the park. The artists selected are given room for a booth for the three-day event in the park.
Lauren Ross, executive director of Laumeier Sculpture Park, says her favorite part of the fair is shopping at all the booths. “Every year I buy more things than I plan to, but I never experience buyer’s remorse. Not only do these beautiful, one-of-a-kind items bring enjoyment, but they also serve as souvenirs of this lively event.”
Ross also recommends coming out Friday night to get the first shot at the widest selection of unique pieces.
More than 15,000 visitors are expected to attend, and returning visitors from previous years can look forward to more of everything they already love about the fair, including more artists, new entertainment and expanded food and beverage options. In addition, those who visit have the chance to view “Hugh Hayden: American Vernacular,” the park’s current exhibit, on its

final weekend. Members of the park can see it for free, or non-members can add a $5 ticket to the fair admission. The park has also restored the iconic Alexander Liberman’s “The Way” sculpture with a freshly painted exterior and newly fabricated steel tubing.
This annual event is a force that unites artists, musicians and many local small businesses. The park is happy to provide the chance for the community to rally together and support each other.
“We take great pride in creating this opportunity for artists, vendors and entertainers, and it’s always such a thrill watching our park patrons show up in droves to support Laumeier Sculpture Park, along with our local arts and small-business community in the process,” Layne says.
Not only does the fair help bring the community together, but it is also Laumeier’s largest fundraiser of the year. The park is a nonprofit organization operating in partnership with St. Louis County Parks. The funds raised during this event make it possible for the park to operate and continue serving 350,000 annual patrons with new art, exhibits, education programs and events.
“[The funds] touch every aspect of what we do: paying our talented and hardworking staff, running programs and caring for artwork,” Ross says. “While that type of support may not sound exciting, its importance cannot be overstated. We could not exist without it.”
Event admission is $10 for those ages 11 and older, and children 10 and under enter for free. Most park memberships include free art fair admission. For tickets and more information, visit laumeiersculpturepark.org/art-fair-event-2024.

Esca
Story and photos by Mabel Suen
Last month, the latest concept from Bengelina Hospitality Group debuted in the Delmar Maker District. Esca, which opened its doors in March, offers a menu of coastal Mediterranean cuisine complemented by an enticing bar program, all within the charming ambiance of a European bistro-style setting.
As reported by Feast in January, the concept is the first of many Bengelina businesses coming to the neighborhood, including the upcoming debut of Florentin, a Tel Aviv-inspired eatery across the street. The restaurants will also be joined on Delmar by relocated sister concepts Olio, Elaia and Nixta.
Chef-owner Ben Poremba describes Esca as a “coastal Mediterranean grill and bar with an emphasis on charcoal and wood cooking.”
Bengelina’s wine and service director, Luciano Racca, explains the meaning behind the name: “The name Esca originates from Spanish ‘la escalivada,’ which is a grilled vegetable dish Ben has always loved and featured in the past at Elaia and Bar Moro,” he says. “Here, we’re focusing specifically on the French and Italian Rivieras. It will hopefully
remind people of the vacation they went to in France or Italy. It’s simple food, good wine and good service.”
Racca describes Esca’s drink program as ambitious yet classic. Elevated but familiar sips such as Old Fashioneds, Negronis and Martinis appear in variations on the drink menu.
“We use very high-end ingredients, and they’re perfectly executed by our bar manager, Noah Davidson,” Racca says. “One of our specialties is a clay pot Negroni.” Racca curated an Italian and French wine list featuring wines from the south of France. A separate private cellar list offers high-end wine from across the world.
The food menu comes divided into snacks, salads and appetizers, protein and vegetable options grilled over charcoal and sides. “Ben is obsessed with antipasti in Italy,” Racca says. “The snacks are a combination of French dishes like brandade – a creamy salt cod – with classic Italian mortadella, speck from the Alps. We do tinned fish because that’s common all over the Mediterranean Sea.”
Homegrown lettuces from Vertigreens are delivered daily to the restaurant and served with charcoal vinaigrette and pecorino sardo. Appetizers include vitello tonnato. “This is from the Piedmont area of Italy which is where I am from. It’s a thin-shaved veal with a particular tuna sauce,” Racca says. “We also have tartare and a crudo option that might change every day. Since we represent the cuisine of the sun, having crudo is very important.”
La escalivada, similarly, can also change sometimes in how it’s presented. The fire-roasted vegetables served at room temperature are available optionally with tuna ventresca (tuna belly). As everything is cooked on charcoal, all pastas come baked and include rotating options such as lasagna bolognese and pasta al forno with pork ragu. Grilled entrees include whole butterflied branzino with olive-pistachio tapenade and Amish chicken with herbes de Provence and chicken jus.
The menu also features daily preparations and selections from the garden and from the butcher. Much like Bengelina’s many developments coming this year, the lively set of offerings is sure to keep their visitors enticed. “We are extremely happy and excited to have had the opportunity to open Esca on Delmar and for everything else that will come in 2024,” Racca says.

Opera Awaits
As spring blossoms and flowers grow this May, St. Louis’ cultural landscape also comes alive with the commencement of the annual season for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. The 2024 festival for OTSL promises a rich blend of traditional classics, innovative interpretations and rarely performed works.
“This is one of our most exciting seasons yet,” says OTSL general director Andrew Jorgensen. “‘The Barber of Seville’ and ‘La bohème’ are brilliant classics that delight audiences across the board. We’re elated to be producing Handel’s ‘Julius Caesar’ for the first time. It feels timely to be closing out the season with Philip Glass’ ‘Galileo Galilei,’ which is all about the dialogue between religion and science.”
The season kicks off on Saturday, May 25, with the company’s fifth production of “The Barber of Seville,” one of opera’s most popular and enduring works. It tells the light, amusing tale of the title character, a tonsorial artist named Figaro, who plays matchmaker for lovestruck young nobleman Count Almaviva as the latter attempts to woo the beautiful Rosina. Her guardian, Doctor Bartolo, has his own romantic plans in mind for his ward, but Figaro will find a way around them.

musical adventure.
Opening June 15 is the last in OTSL’s 2024 repertory season: American composer Philip Glass’ “Galileo Galilei“ – a look at the brilliant career of the eponymous astronomer and scientist.
George Frideric Handel’s version of “Julius Caesar“ will receive its Opera Theatre of Saint Louis premiere when it opens on June 9. The tempestuous love affair between the ambitious Roman military leader and the queen of Egypt, and its ancillary political effects on both the Roman and Egyptian kingdoms, promises to be quite the
In addition to these four operas, Opera Theatre will also present its annual young artist showcase, “Center Stage,” on June 25. The yearly event “shines a spotlight on the Richard Gaddes Festival Artist and Gerdine Young Artist Programs as rising young opera stars perform iconic melodies from opera’s greatest hits and cherished rarities,” according to the OTSL website.
Continuing its 2021 commitment to equity in opera, Opera Theatre will expand “Phyllis’ Seats,” a 2021 ground-breaking initiative that offers free seats to every OTSL performance that season. At each performance, 50 tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone in the community and may be reserved online or by phone the week of the show.
General tickets to the 2024 Opera Theatre season, which runs May 25 through June 30, start at $46 for a two-opera series or $92 for a four-opera series, with single tickets starting at $25.

15th Annual Heartworks Gala
In April, the Marfan Foundation marked its 15th annual Heartworks Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. More than 300 guests joined in for an elegant black-tie cocktail hour and participated in a silent auction before dinner commenced. One of the program’s standout moments was the story of Brooke Pulliam, whose journey of resilience while navigating life with Marfan syndrome was showcased in a segment titled “Voices for Victory.” Doctors Luis Sanchez and Westley Ohman were honored with the Hero with Heart Award for their lifesaving work in vascular surgery and support of the Foundation. With a total exceeding $370,000 raised, the Heartworks Gala benefits individuals living with aortic and vascular conditions by channeling funds toward research, support services and educational initiatives.
Visit laduenews.com to see more photos from this event >
Our gala provides awareness of the incredible work of The Marfan Foundation and raises important funds for the Foundation’s programs that improve the lives of people with genetic aortic conditions. The Gala brings together our loyal supporters that include a community of friends, colleagues and affected individuals and their families for an evening of celebration.
