As a child, what book did you cherish more than all others (see p. 70)? LISA GREENING I remember asking my parents every night to read aloud Richard Scarry’s Good Night, Little Bear. I admired how Little Bear hid on his father’s shoulders to delay bedtime. This led me to think of clever ways I could delay bedtime!

EDITOR A FEW WEEKS AGO, I ATTENDED A WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT Sponsors Appreciation Luncheon (turn to p. 22 to see photos), and this past Monday, I was honored to attend the 61st annual Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon. Hearing the passionate, selfless stories of each and every woman honored was very emotional and inspiring. Congratulations to the class of 2016, and thank you for making the world a better place! It’s also my pleasure to introduce you to this year’s LN Lil’ One winner, Jordan Lebo! Jordan, a 4-year-old cutie with a big personality, will melt your heart on p. 50. In the story, Jordan models fun and stylish kids’ apparel for spring and summer, and I know I couldn’t help smiling with each and every photo. Also, in this week’s Style section, we hope you enjoy LN’s first-ever male-beautyproducts spread, The Beauty of the Beard (p. 48). Written by staff writer and style goddess Amanda Dahl, this story is sure to inspire some serious beard envy. And in this week’s feature in The Daily, we introduce a new monthly cooking column, Healthy Appetite (p. 62). For her first recipe, writer and recipe developer extraordinaire Sherrie Castellano features a quick and easy, spring-perfect strawberry-rosé smoothie – and I can’t wait to give it a try! If you’re still thirsty for more, flip to p. 73, where our resident wine writer, Stanley Browne, shares his recommendations for five trending wines for spring. All the best,

he customer is at the center of everything Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty stands for. “It’s at the epicenter of every decision that’s made at our company, how we write contracts, how we want to advance our technology, how we want to advertise our brand – all of it is centered on customer service,” President Kerry Brooks says. For Dielmann Sotheby’s, it’s a step-by-step process beginning before an agent and client are even officially in business together. “We interpret marketing data so we can show a client their home is being priced correctly,” Brooks says. “We have to make sure we have a strong understanding of the market itself: what’s selling, what isn’t, what their neighbors’ houses are selling for and those last few touches that may be needed to maximize return. “In most areas of St. Louis, it’s a seller’s market,” Brooks continues. “We have to be equipped for the seller because there’s so much competition. If we’re one of five agents someone is talking Kerry brooks, President to, we need to make sure and go in with the Photo by Sarah Conard strongest possible game plan to launch a listing, and be prepared to negotiate contracts and help choose the right one at the end of the day.” Once a property has been launched, the market “starts talking to you,” Brooks notes, through activity, other agents and eager buyers. In today’s St. Louis real estate market, many listings sell on the first weekend, which presents an interesting world for both buyers and sellers. Dielmann Sotheby’s subscribes to a simple philosophy. “It boils down to us being as pro-client as we can, to take care of them and their best interests,” Brooks says. This philosophy is applied to both sellers and buyers. Often when buying a home, there are uncertainties. Dielmann Sotheby’s works with its clients to help navigate these whenever they may pop up. “It’s the part of customer service that’s the most different and often the most difficult,” Brooks says. As some examples, Brooks talks about the sewage system under the house, hail damage on a roof or radon in the home. These are things that may not be able to be assessed until after a house has been purchased by the buyer, so the real estate company has to navigate its clients through these waters. “Deals that are completely seamless are rare these days,” Brooks explains. “But we work with our customers to negotiate through those unique parts of each contract and situation.” Buying a house is an anxiety-inducing process, but a strong company like Dielmann Sotheby’s is able to navigate tough situations for its customers. “We go in equipped with knowledge and the ability to navigate both sides, so good people can get to the closing table feeling good about their decisions,” Brooks says. Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty is an affiliate of Sotheby’s International Realty, which has a history dating back nearly 300 years. Customer service has been at the center of the company for those nearly three centuries, and Brooks and his team work daily to make sure it stays that way. They work to stay on top of their communication with their clients through advertising, recruiting agents that can represent their clients in the best possible way and keeping up with important trends in the St. Louis real estate market. “Customer service is always the common denominator,” Brooks says. “We want to be able to represent our clients in the best possible way we can, every day.”

THE ART OF THE MATTER GALA & AUCTION Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

C

ontemporary Art Museum St. Louis was awash with great art as more than 70 pieces were available in the silent auction during its Art of the Matter Gala & Auction. The evening focused on the four major areas of impact for CAM: exhibitions, education, local arts and community engagement. Interspersing remarks, dinner and fundraising was a little beatboxing by St. Louis native Nicole Paris, followed by dancing late into the night. With a fund-a-need goal of just $100,000, the event raised more than $950,000 for CAM exhibits and programs.

he Women of Achievement Sponsors Appreciation Luncheon was held at the RitzCarlton, St. Louis to thank the organization’s sponsors for their support. As its sole mission, Women of Achievement – among the oldest organizations in the St. Louis area – honors the volunteer service and leadership of women. Now celebrating its 61st year, it has recognized the significant achievement of a total of 592 women whose volunteerism has demonstrated their dedication and commitment to improving life in and around St. Louis. The honorees represent a cross section of the geographical, cultural and religious diversity of our community and are recognized at an awards luncheon each May for the indelible impact each has made on the region’s cultural and social landscape. The generous support of corporate and individual sponsors throughout the region makes the luncheon possible. Chairing it this year were Alice S. Handelman and Dr. Gwendolyn Packnett.

I love promoting volunteerism in our community by honoring women who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of other people. Each of my Women of Achievement sisters has been honored for making an indelible impact on the cultural and social landscape of our region. Ask a Woman of Achievement to do something, and it gets done. Our mission is to honor the volunteer service and leadership of women. Each of our 10 honorees has a story to tell. She may bring dignity and joy to the elderly, champion the arts, fight poverty or battle crime. She may advocate against domestic violence, develop a community resource or prevent child abuse. All Women of Achievement have made a significant impact through their volunteer work and are recognized for their passion and compassion.

ur Lady’s Inn recently presented the Dennis M. Jones Family Foundation with its 2016 Guardian Angel Award in Kemoll’s Top of the Met facility. Surrounded by family members and friends, Judy Jones commended Our Lady’s Inn for its 35 years of providing shelter and wraparound services to thousands of homeless, pregnant women and their children in their time of crisis. The annual gala began with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner and a live auction, finishing with live music provided by the Bob Kuban Band. Since its inception in 1982, Our Lady’s Inn programs have helped women have a healthy pregnancy, attain education goals, gain employment and secure stable housing for their families. I think helping children and pregnant women who have been affected by great disparity is one of the greatest services we have to offer. We help them to get off the street and get them on to the path of a brighter future and place of stability. Just as in the parable spoken of by Jesus, ‘I tell you the truth, for whatever you did for the least of these; you have done it to me.’ We believe this is one of the greatest ways we can serve the Lord.

Big on Bi-Colors

‌T

By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess

Coreopsis Big Bang Series Consider, in that respect, the latest member of the Coreopsis Big Bang series, ‘Cosmic Evolution,’ a stunning bi-color flower crossbred by Massachusetts plant breeder Darrell Probst. Probst has crossbred several species of our native tickseed to produce this fabulous, easy-to-grow hybrid with white petals and a delicate magenta overlay. It grows about 2 feet high, requires little attention once established and will bloom nearly until frost. Another bi-color in this series is the brighter red-on-yellow ‘Cosmic Eye,’ a very low-growing dwarf tickseed that may reach only 12 inches. Other cultivars in this collection include the deep velvetyred hardy Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ and canaryyellow ‘Galaxy.’ All of these new Probst hybrids bloom heavily once established and may yield months of flowers. Selfcleaning, they may enjoy a bit more flower production with a light midseason shearing from you. They are an uncommon food of deer so these bright tickseeds make a great choice for your garden. Darling Dwarf Dahlias Dahlia ‘Cancun,’ a striking purple-and-white bi-color in the Maxi-series, comes from Dalina Plant Breeders in the United Kingdom. The newest of a series of smaller specialty dahlias developed for border and container use, these compact forms of this normally wide-ranging genus allow us to more effectively use this tender perennial in our summer gardens. Old-school dahlias can grow to 6 feet and beyond, but these tidy cultivars are happy in a pot. Other bicolors in this series include ‘Papagaya’ and ‘Tampico’ in the strawberry-red-and-white range and the more subtle lavender ‘Salinas.’ For something even smaller, try the Dalina Mini-series with the tiny cherry-and-white ‘Cruzila,’ striking ‘Lorena’ in red with a yellow eye or the soft pink-amber-gold blend of ‘Salvador.’ Like all dahlias, these tender perennials must be dried off and overwintered inside to live to see a second spring.

Big Bang series ‘Cosmic Evolution’ will change with the weather. It starts out bi-color and may be nearly white by ultrahot August.

University of Florida breeding program.

Coleus Color-Scheme Completion What summer garden would be complete without coleus? Coleus always reliably provide big filler foliage color during summer heat. The newest bi-color coleus is ColorBlaze ‘Apple Brandy’ – maroon with a shocking limegreen border. It will reach a vigorous 3 feet if

unpinched. Nip it back for a fuller-pot plant. At the end of the season, take many cuttings to root in the house and provide window-sill excitement for the rest of the year. ColorBlaze ‘Apple Brandy’ ranks among many new cultivars brought to us by the Coleus Breeding Program at the University of Florida.

he hottest trend in today’s horticulture involves using strong chromatic components of bi-color flowers and foliage. Striking complementary combinations express the gaiety of the raucous Victorian landscape, while subtle bi-chromatic analogous partners channel the sophistication of today’s gardener. Whichever you prefer, dynamic new varieties likely can suit almost every gardener’s taste and style.

Backyard Oasi Oasis Water features can transform your backyard into a serene and scenic retreat.

or an ethereal escape from bustling city life, homeowners can retreat to the soothing sights and sounds of water features in their own backyards. From spectacular resortlike waterfalls by Rescue Landscaping & Outdoor Living and colorfully lit ponds by Chesterfield Valley Nursery to water cascading from beautiful pottery by Poynter Landscape Architecture & Construction, homeowners have more stunning choices than ever to create a relaxing oasis for their family and a wow factor for outdoor entertaining. LN recently spoke to landscape experts from each of these outdoor design companies to learn more about the best water features to beautify your backyard this season.

Showstopping outdoor projects from television networks like HGTV are upping the ante when it comes to transforming typical backyards into tropical getaways, and Rescue Landscaping & Outdoor Living is ready for the challenge, says owner and founder Bob Krull. Rescue takes outdoor landscaping to the next level with custom-designed water features to achieve a resort-inspired environment. “We can create mind-blowing waterfalls into ponds and pools with overhangs of any shape, size and color you can imagine,” Krull says. “We can even provide custom putting greens with water features for the avid golfer.” Krull collaborates with each homeowner to bring his or her vision to life. A detailed proposal and drawing are presented to the client within a week, and projects typically take a couple of days to a few weeks to complete. Small gardens often call for one focal point – a boulder with water cascading down it, for example – while larger projects for pools or yards can feature multiple boulders and waterfalls to grab attention. And clients want these water features to blend into existing landscaping, paver patios or rock, he adds. Rescue’s creative and artistic water features set clients’ backyards apart, Krull says. “They create a tranquil sound and ambiance that make congregating around them a wonderful experience.” Rescue Landscaping & Outdoor Living, 6122 W. Park Ave., St. Louis, 314-363-9417, rescuelandscaping.net

Chesterfield Valley Nursery

Whether homeowners are looking for the soothing sounds of water falling over stones or the roar of a rushing river in their backyard, Chesterfield Valley Nursery is fit for the job. “There is something about a waterfall that can either calm the soul or create an adrenaline rush,” says landscape designer and project manager Bob Graeler. Selecting a water feature for a landscape depends on clients’ preferences and spaces, Graeler notes. To bring clients’ dreams to life, Chesterfield Valley determines their desires for everything from aesthetics to maintenance ability, aquatic life and safety. A common request involves lower-maintenance features, Graeler says, adding that elements such as ultraviolet light and BioFalls water filters can make the feature more manageable. A low-maintenance addition now gaining popularity is the pondless water feature, such as a simple basin with a unique rock with water bubbling from it. Unlike its traditional counterpart, this pondless version doesn’t attract significant amounts of debris, algae, fish waste and unwanted wildlife. Another common trend for water features centers on the addition of lighting, Graeler says. “This can make a common backyard fish pond a significant attraction, even at night, and the glow of gently splashing water next to the patio is just beautiful.” Chesterfield Valley Nursery, 16825 N. Outer 40 Road, Chesterfield, 636-532-9307, chesterfieldvalleynursery.com

The ideal water feature brings calm and comfort to your backyard, according to Poynter Landscape Architecture & Construction owner Richard Poynter. When it comes to selecting the best fit, Poynter cites the setting of your outdoor space – rather than your home architecture – as most important. “Pond features often look best in wooded or shady settings; however, they also can be areas that create more tree debris not so conducive to easy maintenance for any water feature,” he says. Clients commonly request low-maintenance features with water sounds, Poynter says. He recommends below-ground reservoirs for urns or fountains. “Urns are the new trend in water features and as part of a pool are ideal,” he says. “These are zero-maintenance, as it is already being done by the pool filtration.” To implement water features, Poynter Landscape’s architects factor in customers’ settings, maintenance tolerances and budgets to design systems that meet their needs. Then, plans with 3-D imaging are presented to clients to ensure they meet the clients’ distinct vision. “For us to design something timeless and low-maintenance, it’s about the clients’ environment and their ultimate objectives,” Poynter says. “From there, we can design and build most anything.” Poynter Landscape Architecture & Construction, 15815 Jedberg Lane, Ballwin, 636-692-4917, poynterlandscape.com

for the beautiful 20-year old house was to update the kitchen with new countertops. But the existing space had too many constraints. Redesigning a better space meant creating two work zones – a cooking and cleaning island. My clients fell in love with the idea of a bright white kitchen. The challenge was which white countertop material would work best for them. After much consideration, their double-edged marble countertops perfectly suited the look and function they needed.

2016 LN Lil’ One

Meet This Year’s

n a d r o J winner, By Denise Kruse Photos by Sabrine Rhodes

F

our-year-old Jordan Lebo is this year’s Ladue News Lil’ One winner! every year, we encourage proud parents to enter photos of their little cuties, ages 2 to 4, and then readers vote in our online poll. After that, the winner is determined at random among the top five vote-getters. This year’s winner, Jordan, is a spunky kid with a big personality! Although his signature look – his curly locks – gets a lot of attention, it’s his sense of humor and charm that truly win people over. “He loves to make people laugh,” says his mom, Stacey. Jordan likewise loves playing with big sister Alexis, Legos and imaginext superheroes and villains (his “guys,” as he calls them). Jordan similarly loves watching Steelers football and Penguins and Blues hockey with his dad and is a huge helper for his mom in and out of the house. He’s a daredevil and natural athlete, fearless on roller coasters, and tenacious at soccer and T-ball games. His favorite bands are “Daddy’s band,” Queen, and Guns n’ roses, mostly for its mention of the Marvel Comics superhero Captain America in “Paradise City.” His favorite places around town are Chuck e. Cheese’s, Target (because they sell his imaginext “guys”) and his buddy Connor’s house. His favorite foods: quesadillas with guacamole from Chipotle, olives and pickles.

Kids’ summer Fashions: Feature Story lAURIE’S SHOES

Stepping Up

By amanda dahl

F

rom start to finish, Laurie’s Shoes has kept pace with national shoe chains – all while keeping its business in the family. With a success story to warm the heart, Mark Waldman, president of Laurie’s Shoes, explains how his family business stays ahead of the competition: “We value homegrown ownership and customer service, which is our No. 1 goal, followed by a tremendous assortment of better-grade footwear and accessories.” Discover premium footwear, which combines comfort with effortless style for the ultimate in shoe design. Laurie’s is introducing a new brand from Hubbard, made of 100 percent rubber soles in a compact package with a dressed-up vibe. Key patterns in 12 different colors currently are available for men, and women can expect to see the finest leather in this line starting at the end of June. “All of this is a throwback to classic shoe styles,” Waldman explains. “The ’80s and early ’90s are trending right now, with throwbacks to thicker wedges and higher soles for women and kids. Right now, muted colors are in style, but purple and turquoise are making a comeback.” From handing out Dad’s Cookies to little ones to

resident professional shoe fitters, who will find your foot’s exact proportions, the company guarantees a personalized shopping experience. With a wide range of fits, up to size 18 in men and 14 in women with narrow through double-extra-wide options, customers are guaranteed to find what they need in a shoe. The local chain is celebrating a big anniversary this year, No. 65. “Laurie’s was started in 1951 by my parents and grandparents. With my brother, Scott Waldman, and my sister, Patty Baker, plus my nephews, Jacob Waldman and Dylan Baker, we have our fourth generation coming on strong,” Waldman says. Clients have been sticking around for almost as long, even as far back as 30plus years. And with the average employee working for longer than 15 years, the evidence is clear that everyone who walks through Laurie’s doors feels immediately at home. As the next generation steps up, traditions are kept alive and important values are passed down. The

family makes a point to give back to the community that continues to support them by donating to Kids for Cancer, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the St. Louis Public Library. “We’re very proud of St. Louis and our heritage. It’s a phenomenal place to do business and live,” Waldman says. “We look forward to many, many years of doing what we love.” Stop by any of Laurie’s four locations: Laurie’s Etc. at 281 Chesterfield Mall; Laurie’s Shoes Inc. at 9916 Manchester Road; Laurie’s Shoes Etc. at 1451 Saint Louis Galleria; or its sister store, Birkenstock & More, at 12350 Olive Blvd. Learn more about the wide selection at lauriesshoes.com.

Healthy appetite

StrawberryRosé Smoothie Story, recipe and photo by Sherrie Castellano

‌G

reen juice cocktails are trending and for good reason: They make us feel like we’re pumping our bodies with loads of chlorophyll to balance out the alcohol. We drink them to feel healthier – and they’re pretty tasty, too. If green juice cocktails exist, then wine smoothies should definitely be a thing. They’re packed with plantbased protein and healthy fats to sustain your energy and keep you full, which helps you avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, this smoothie helps ward off nasty hangovers, as well. Part wine slushy, part superfood smoothie and part protein-packed snack, this drink would make the perfect addition to a weekend brunch, garden party or girls’ night in. The recipe is quite versatile: Substitute fresh raspberries or blueberries for strawberries, and Pinot Grigio, Riesling or local Vignoles for dry or sweet rosé.

Strawberry-Rosé Smoothie Serves | 2 | 2 cups fresh destemmed strawberries 1 ripe banana 1 cup dry or sweet rosé 3 Tbsp chia or flax seeds 1 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice handful ice sprig fresh mint (for garnish) | Preparation | In a blender, combine all ingredients except mint and blend until smooth. Garnish with mint and serve cold. Healthy Appetite is a monthly column in Feast Magazine. Visit feastmagazine.com for more fresh and fun recipes.

Happily Ever After

Maddie ‌ONCE UPON A TIME, MYERS DILL

had a bad habit of looking at Petfinder – all the time. He and his wife, Christine, had gotten their first dog, Chief, from the website, so he was always perusing it, looking for a friend for Chief. “About once a month I’d send [Christine] links, saying, ‘Chief wants a sibling!’” Myers Dill says. “She’d reply with a ‘ha-ha,’ and it wasn’t really something we had seriously discussed.” He sent his wife a link to a dog named Kiwi, a pit bull terrier described as “as sweet as the fruit she shares a name with.” She was rescued in July 2015 by Even Chance Pit Bull Rescue, a St. Louis-based organization that seeks to counteract misinformation about pit bulls with factual education, communication and resources. Even Chance rescues pit bulls from area shelters and provides foster care for rescued dogs until they find their forever homes. “Kiwi had a whole extended profile that sounded a lot like Chief’s personality,” Myers Dill recalls. “The whole Even Chance mission was attractive to us, so we set up a meeting for Chief to meet Kiwi.” The meeting went well, and the Dill family took Kiwi in about a week later for a trial run. Even Chance worked with them to make sure Kiwi was a good fit for their family.

“They were so accommodating in making sure the home was a right fit for her,” Christine Dill says. “They set up a training session for some things we were trying to work on and gave us a lot of great resources.” In October 2015, Kiwi had found her forever home and was renamed Maddie. Though they don’t know much of Maddie’s backstory, they do know that she was found in a shelter in East St. Louis. The Dills think she’s been in a home before, because she knows basic things about being in a house. But other than that, her background is murky. “We think that maybe because of her squirrel obsession, she got away from someone,” Myers Dill says. Having two dogs has been a lot of fun for the Dill family, and Chief is enjoying his new little sister. “It’s different having two dogs,” Myers Dill says. “Maddie is a great playmate for Chief, but Chief is seven years old, and Maddie’s only two. She has a ton of energy.” The Dills talk about the dogs playing in the backyard with endless energy. They say Maddie gets along great with other dogs and loves to cuddle, too. “She wants to be on your lap all the time,” Myers Dill says. “She’s added so much fun and excitement to our lives.” Maddie does have a bit of a squirrel obsession, as

She also specializes in completely destroying all toys. “She’s completely fearless,” Christine Dill says. “I’d say it’s one of her top qualities.” Despite this fearlessness, Myers Dill says Maddie’s also a diva. “Something will fall in another room, and she’ll run in to see what happened. mayda Barsumyan, president and chief customer experience officer of Business Escalation Inc., shares the path to her success.

M

ayda Barsumyan has never been a shrinking violet. As a 19-year-old, she traveled to America alone from her home in Bulgaria, unable to speak english. She had nothing in her pockets save $15 and the name of a cousin who would provide a place to stay. To say that she’s brave would be an understatement. Her adventurous attitude has propelled Barsumyan to an impressive level of success – especially considering her humble beginnings in the U.S. Barsumyan is now president and chief customer experience officer of Business escalation inc., based in St. Louis and with offices in Washington, D.C. According to the firm’s website, Business escalation serves as a leading source for “cash-on-time delivery,” offering cashmanagement products and services, including centralization of cash and treasury consulting to large governmental bodies, private nonprofits and Fortune 500 companies. Business escalation also ranks among the “Top 25 Oracle Platinum Partners” – the only 100 percent woman-owned company to achieve that distinction. Although she was initially overwhelmed by American culture when she arrived in 1990, Barsumyan devoted herself to her education, earning bachelor’s degrees in accounting and international business and a master’s degree in legal-management information and technology from New Jersey’s Montclair State University. “My first job was as a cash accountant,” she says. “i would finish my work in two hours when it took everyone else a day to do it. i constantly asked for more work. Finally, my manager put me in charge of the new Oracle PeopleSoft General Ledger implementation, and i’ve been in the field ever since. i love the balance of working with numbers and the challenge of constantly facing new projects.” in fact, Barsumyan’s enthusiasm for problem-solving quickly earned her the nickname “the fixer” at work. “During my first job as a data-application clerk, i was able to apply all of their unapplied cash and correct errors in processing,” she explains. “The treasurer noticed that his cash flow changed and that his operational results improved drastically after i joined his team. He had more money to invest, all of his bank accounts were balanced, and his operational and financial risk was minimized. Slowly, he gave me other regions to fix, and i became known as a fixer. They sent me to the most challenging areas of the organization to lend a hand.” As her professional reputation grew and demand for her services increased, she realized she needed help. Barsumyan began hiring professional friends to assist her with her work, and in 2006, she established her company as Cash Management Global Treasury Solutions (CMGTS), which she rebranded to Business escalation in 2014. “My company follows Oracle trends,” she says. “The erP [enterprise resource planning] world is moving to the cloud – our goal is moving not only the private sector, but also the public sector to the cloud. We have formed a strong alliance with Oracle, and we are expanding with them. Our ultimate goal is to move countries to the cloud.” Although this sounds like standard software implementation, Barsumyan says Business escalation offers much more than that. “By first strategizing with all departments of a client’s team and analyzing how those teams work together, Business escalation is able to provide a financial software solution that aligns the right technology with the right automation with the right processes, resulting in tangible, measurable results,” she says. She notes that clients experience reduced paperwork, increased operational-cash availability and reduced financial and operational risk with predictable cash-flow needs and fewer errors. Like many ambitious professionals who relish their careers, Barsumyan has worked hard to create a balance between her professional and personal lives. “i decided to become an independent consultant, thinking that i will make money to support my family and have more time to spend with my kids,” she says of her teenage daughter and son (who are twins). “everyone is looking for this perfect balance between work and family,” she says. “in real life, i find there is no perfection. i am where i need to be for the day. if my clients need me, i am there; if the kids need me, i’m with them. My best advice for parents is to be role models for their kids. Be the best you can be and show them the way.” in between work and family time, Barsumyan finds time to exercise and rest. “i start my day with meditation,” she says. “i need to stretch and remind myself of how thankful i am to have my kids, my friends and my clients in my life.” Business Escalation, 7733 Forsyth Blvd., Suite 1100, Clayton, 888-594-9919, businessescalation.com

oundary, the latest eatery to open at The Cheshire, takes over the previous space of The Restaurant. Not only has that space been revamped, but also the menu has been completely re-envisioned, resulting in a hearty feast for all of the senses. The interior of Boundary is visually stunning. As the centerpiece of the space, a double-sided lime-green banquette sits under a pair of elegant cylindrical light fixtures, while other sumptuous soft-seating options abound for those who want to sink in and get comfortable, as well as small tables and larger high-top tables. A separate bar area remains from the previous incarnation, and it’s as cozy and inviting as ever. The open kitchen also remains for those who like to have a bird’s-eye view of the back-of-the-house action.

Now for the bill of fare. Executive chef Rex Hale has gone above and beyond, putting together a delicious and eclectic mix of cuisines, and we ranged through a pretty hearty selection of them. One of the menu sections that intrigued me right off the bat was its “Raw Bar,” filled with all manner of fresh seafood. We tasted the Kona Kampachi ($15) and the Peruvian ceviche ($14) from this list. The Kona Kampachi featured ultrathin slices of that fish fanned out on the plate and augmented with beets and ginger, then seasoned with sea salt and coriander. The ceviche was based around chunks of mild, sweet corvina with a rich sauce of lime and coconut, served in a halved coconut with plantain and casava chips on the side. The presentation of both dishes was gorgeous. From the shareable options, we opted for the toast

By Matt Sorrell ($8) – pieces of grilled bread topped with asparagus, mushrooms, lemon and ricotta salata – and the house sausage ($12), made in house and served on a bed of potatoes. Both of these are big enough to share, although that probably won’t happen, as you’ll want them all to yourself. The “Hot and Cold” offerings, basically a soup and salads, vary just as much as the other menu categories. The endive salad ($12) is the ultimate in finger food – endive boats filled with tangy pecorino, almonds and grapefruit with a mustard vinaigrette. Decadent is the only word for the French onion soup ($10), which is especially rich thanks to the addition of port. Oh, and not only is the food above and beyond, but also the beverage program is pretty solid. We tried the Eyes Wide ($10), a spicy, herbal concoction that

includes one of my favorites, green chartreuse, and a glass of Riesling from Revelry Vintners in Washington state ($9), which paired especially well with the fish dishes. Boundary takes its name from its location literally between the city and county lines, and it’s perfectly situated near Highway 40/64, making it a prime venue for dinner and drinks before heading to pretty much any performance at the major theaters in town. Also, although parking for the restaurants at The Cheshire used to be a confusing morass of various valets, the system has been streamlined now so diners can park on their own.

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) knows how to open a season: For its 41st annual rotating repertory of presentations, the company brought in opera star and St. Louis native Grace Bumbry. Bumbry led a public master class at The Sheldon Concert Hall on May 6, which St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay proclaimed “Grace Bumbry Day,” before being honored at OTSL’s 2016 Spring Fete on May 7. That helped set the stage for the company’s new season, which opens May 21 and ends June 26. As with most OTSL seasons, the 2016 slate features various established favorites as well as a contemporary new work. The casts comprise both international stars and many performers who started in opera as Gerdine Young Artists trained at OTSL. The season begins with an all-new production of Giacomo Puccini’s La boheme. Ron Daniels, who presided over the company’s acclaimed presentation of Sweeney Todd a few years ago, returns to stage La boheme. Emanuele Andrizzi makes his company debut conducting the tragic tale of young bohemian lovers in 19th-century Paris. La boheme stars former Gerdine Young Artist Hae Ji Chang as Mimi and Anthony Kalil as her lover, Rodolfo, in a cast including Bradley Smoak, Thomas Hammons and Sean Plumb, the latter making his OTSL debut. Verdi’s operatic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth opens May 28. British baritone Roland Wood makes his OTSL debut in the title role, and soprano Julie Makerov portrays the ambitious Lady Macbeth. The cast also features tenor Matthew Plenk as Macduff and Robert Pomakov as Banquo. Stephen Lord, the company’s music director, conducts, and Lee Blakeley directs. Opening June 5 is Richard Strauss’ early-20thcentury comedy Ariadne on Naxos, the story of a wealthy Viennese man who hires both divas and clowns to prepare two separate shows after an opulent dinner party and then asks them to perform together when the dinner runs long, with unexpected results. Seán Curran directs, and Rory Macdonald makes his OTSL conducting debut. The cast for Ariadne on Naxos includes principal-role debuts by Marjorie Owens as Ariadne, A.J. Glueckert as Bacchus, John Brancy as Arleecchino, Levi Hernandez as the Music Master and former Gerdine Young Artists Cecelia Hall as the Composer and So

Young Park as Zerbinetta. Acclaimed composer Jack Perla teams with librettist Rajiv Joseph for the world premiere of Shalimar the Clown, which makes its OTSL debut June 11. Based on a novel by controversial writer Salman Rushdie, Shalimar the Clown tells the tragic tale of Shalimar and Boonyi, a young couple who have grown up together in a pastoral village in Kashmir. Although their village approves of the marriage of the two – one of them Hindu, the other Muslim – tragedy ensues when Boonyi becomes the object of desire of an American ambassador. Perla uses musical traditions of Kashmir such as table drums and sitar in his score, which Jayce Ogren conducts. James Robinson – the company’s artistic director, who also oversaw world premieres of 27 in 2014 and Champion in 2013 – directs a cast featuring tenor Sean Panikkar in the title role and Andriana Chuchman as Boonyi. Ticket prices for any production in the 2016 season start at $25. Subscriptions start at $82 for a two-opera Wednesday or Saturday matinee series and $170 for a four-opera evening or matinee series. Special packages are available for K-12 educators, audiences under 45 years of age and out-of-town guests. To buy tickets or learn more, visit experienceopera. org or call the OTSL box office at 314-961-0644.

Ready Readers

Up on Being Down on the Farm

W

ith summer nearing, Ready Readers has two down-on-the-farm suggestions for spending enjoyable time with your young children while broadening their horizons. Six times yearly, more than 10,000 underprivileged kids receive brand-new books from our program – and we highly recommend this pair of books for your own family enjoyment. Our 2-year-old friends soon will receive Barnyard Dance! by perennial favorite author-illustrator Sandra Boynton. Like all of Boynton’s books, this one abounds with charming and rambunctious critters ready to amuse both your child and you. Best of all, these farm animals love to dance. The book provides wonderful new vocabulary words to bolster a preschooler’s emerging literacy skills, and he or she will jump at the chance to dance like the animals. Expect squeals of delight as together you bow and twirl, bounce and strut, prance and skitter in a lively reel. We also encourage you to sing songs that connect to the story. For a special treat, plan a trip to Grant’s Farm or the Saint

Louis Zoo to see animals up close. (That said, we can’t promise those animals will dance as well as Boynton’s.) The 3- to 5-year-olds in our Ready Readers program, meanwhile, will enjoy a new take on a time-honored tale with The Little Red Hen by Mary Finch, Kate Slater and Debra Messing. It’s easy to overlook fables and folk tales in favor of “modern stories, but it’s important to recognize the part they play for children in learning valuable life lessons. These narratives allow youngsters to relate their feelings and experiences with those of the story’s characters in a safe, nonthreatening way. This version of the poultry-related folk tale updates

By Sheila Oliveri

it to offer the animals a chance to learn from their mistakes and retain a valued friendship, while the bright, inviting mixed-media collages convey characters and scenery in beautiful detail. Best of all, the book ends with a recipe. This is the perfect opportunity to relive the tale as you enjoy making fresh bread together – like the little red hen and her friends. With this book, you’re not just bolstering literacy, but exploring math, science, nutrition and cooperation, too. Make the most of your summer family hours. Reading together opens a pathway for sharing ideas and discussion that will last throughout your child’s formative years. You’ll help him or her grow to be a confident reader and secure communicator, and you yourself will have memories to enjoy forever. So don’t wait until bedtime – reading together is fun at any time. At Ready Readers, we know that “Kids Who Read Succeed! To share your love of reading with more children in our community, consider volunteering in our program. Our volunteers read high-quality children’s literature each week with the same classroom of preschoolers from low-income communities in St. Louis. To learn more, visit readyreaders.org.

Left Bank Books presents former St. Louisans and authors JOHN LIPSCOMB and ADRIANNE LUGO, who will sign and discuss their memoir, The Painting and the Piano, at Left Bank Books. Growing up more than 1,000 miles apart and worlds away from each other, Lipscomb and Lugo seemed to have all a child could ask for. However, the demons of their respective mothers would tear their young, fragile lives apart. Told as a tandem narrative, Lipscomb and Lugo’s memoir passes their respective stories of childhood trauma and abuse, addiction, healing and final triumph of love back and forth in alternating chapters. 7 p.m. Free, but proof of purchase of The Painting and the Piano from Left Bank Books will be required to enter the signing line. 314-367-6731 or left-bank.com.

‌Sat., May 14

The International Photography Hall of Fame presents “NEAR THE EGRESS” WITH ANTONIO MARTINEZ at the International Photography Hall of Fame. “Near the Egress” began as a “what if” experiment in which Martinez’s interest in modern dryplate tintypes at that time in 2005 was later inspired by John Aasp’s lecture on the properties of a moving still image and influenced by Stan Brakhage’s experimental films. “Near the Egress” is a three-part series composed of the original modern dryplate tintype, the stop-animation video and digital images that combine the details of the black-and-white negative and the ephemeral effects produced by the tintype. Within the video, the dark and graceful stuttering movements of chemical stains and blemishes of the circus convey a sense of loss and memory. With more than 800 modern tintypes produced within three years’ time, “Near the Egress” is a remarkable example in which photographic processes are worked across multiple boundaries (the digital and chemical darkroom) to evoke a form of expression, which melds together form and emotion in an innovative fashion. 1:30 p.m. Free for members, $5 for nonmembers. RSVP at 314-535-1999 or info@iphf.org.

Wed., May 18

University City Public Library presents New York Times bestselling author ANTON DISCLAFANI to celebrate the release of her newest book, The After Party. Immersed in the big, sun-drenched world of 1950s Texas oil money and social clubs, The After Party tells the story of lifelong best friends Joan and Cece as they navigate their socialite world as adults. While they’re seemingly opposites, the friends have grown up almost like sisters, with intertwining lives, so Cece considers it her responsibility to bring a drifting Joan back into the socialite fold. What results is a story of female friendship as obsessive, euphoric and consuming as any romance. DiSclafani is the author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls. She was raised in northern Florida and now lives with her family in Alabama. Copies of The After Party will be available for purchase and signing after the reading, provided by Subterranean Books. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome. 7 p.m. Free. 314-727-3150 or ucitylibrary.org.

The Regional Arts Commission presents “THE CRAFT OF ART,” which is a sequel to “The Art of Craft” exhibit, curated by Nancy Newman Rice at the RAC Gallery in spring 2014. In this latest exhibit, artists selected for “The Craft of Art” have maintained a keen sense of craftsmanship and technical skill in order to communicate coherently with the viewer. Their work varies in their manner of expression and aesthetic sensibilities but is tied together by a bond of careful consideration for content, composition and execution. Whether nonobjective or realistic, the paintings, prints and sculptures in this exhibit rely upon visually articulate results, which are essential to the meaning of each work. The viewer has the opportunity to interpret these works of art intellectually, viscerally or emotionally. Opening reception 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., exhibit open through July 30. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 314-863-5811 or racstl.org.

Tue., May 17

Left Bank Books presents a conversation and book signing with LEZLEY MCSPADDEN and LYAH BETH LEFLORE, co-authors of Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy, and Love of My Son Michael Brown, at Christ Church Cathedral. When Michael Orlandus Darrion Brown was born, he was adored and doted on by his aunts, uncles, grandparents, father and most of all his 16-year-old mother, who nicknamed him Mike Mike. Lezley McSpadden never imagined that her son’s name would inspire the resounding chants of protesters in Ferguson and ignite the global conversation about the American policing system. In Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil, McSpadden picks up the pieces of the tragedy that shook her life and the country to their core and reveals the unforgettable story of her life, her son and their truth. 7 p.m. Free, but RSVPs required at left-bank. com/mcspadden. Proof of purchase required to enter signing line. 314-367-6731 or left-bank.com.

Her empowering work has garnered a coast-to-coast audience that eagerly awaits Shrill, her highly anticipated literary debut. 7 p.m. Free, but RSVPs required at left-bank.com/west. 314-367-6731 or left-bank.com.

Spring

SIPS By Stanley Browne | Wine photos by Sarah Conard

LN’s oenophile expert from Robust Wine Bar shares what wines he’s sipping this season.

S

pring ignites the senses, invoking change and renewal. Warm breezes and brighter days encourage outdoor activities and the gathering of friends. Patios both at restaurants and in backyards come alive with conversation, light spreads and plenty of beverages to sip. For wines, spring marks a transitional time – our palates shift, gravitating toward crisper, lighter wines in multiple shades of pink, white and orange. Also, wine drinkers are becoming more adventurous, which helps the St. Louis market explore more distinctive grape varietals. With so many choices out there, finding your favorites can make for an exciting journey. Although rosés are definitely strongholds in the wine scene, plenty of other wines remain worthy of investigation this season. What follows constitutes just a small list of wines to drink now, most of them readily available from local wine stores. Enjoy the journey of springtime wines – and cheers!

NV Baron de Bréban, Brut Rosé, Grenache, Sparkling – Provence, France Retail: $14 Tasting notes: Light and balanced aromas of white strawberry, cranberry and cherry blossoms. Juicy and vibrant in the style of Provence with a nice, dry, lingering palate. Because it drinks so well, this is a great sparkling go-to for everyday drinking on the patio or with guests. I love the clean and dry bubbles with a touch of fruit.

Certified Sommelier Stanley Browne is the owner of Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves and Downtown at the MX.

2009 Paolo Bea, “Arboreus” Trebbiano – Umbria, Italy Retail: $66 Tasting notes: Nutty, earthy aromas and a dark golden hue. At first sip, seemingly “off,” but not – developed flavors of apricots, raisins and nuts, as well as great minerality with a dry finish that lingers with the acidity. This unusual wine, referred to as “orange wine,” is trending with sommeliers around the country. The skins used in it remain in contact eks with the juice for three week mally (white-wine skins are norm tain freshn freshness), removed quickly to retain and it develops an orange tingee and tannins. It’s then aged two years in stainless steel tanks before bottling. This wine has an earthiness, yet still retains acidity.

2014 Château l’Oiselinière de la Ramée, Melon de Bourgogne – Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Loire, France Retail: $18 Tasting notes: Apple, pear and citrus notes, with white flowers and a zippy mouthfeel and acidity to balance this wine. Muscadet had a reputation as wine that tastes like nothing, and yet, originating close to the sea, it perfectly matches oysters. Today, using indigenous yeasts and sur lie aging, Muscadet develops more th 40flavor and characteristics. With utheast to 80-year-old vines with south thern exposure situated on the north er in bank of the Sèvre Nantaise river Loire, France, this family has been making Muscadet going back to the 15th century.

2015 The Loop, Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Anne Amie Vineyards, Muller-Thurgau

– Marlborough, New Zealand

– Yamhill-Carlton, Willamette, Oregon

Retail: $14 Tasting notes: Peach, lemongrass, hints of jasmine and pea shoots, balanced with grapefruit and lime. Clean citrus and tropical fruits rounding out the finish.

Retail: $17 Tasting notes: A balance of fruit, crispness, honeysuckle, pink grapefruit and Gala apples displaying some roundness with a long finish. Muller-Thurgau, mostly grown in Germany, has found its way to Oregon. Anne Amie does a great job with this grape.

Yes, this comes from New Zealand, but the tropical fruits mellow out the typical sharpness, making this a very quaffable wine that has more going on than expected.

2015 Domaine Cristia Rosé, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre

2014 Villa Matilde, Falanghina

– Côtes de Provence, France

– Campania, Italy

Retail: $15 Tasting notes: Pale pink with apricot, honeydew, strawberry, and light and refreshing quince with a dry finish.

Retail: $16 Tasting notes: Great floral notes of pineapple, banana and peach pits to balance with a touch of rose and sage leaf and nice acidity.

This Châteauneuf du Pape producer makes this classic-style Provençal rosé that perfectly complements patio weather. Rosés make great sipping wines, but also pair splendidly with grilled foods.

The rich volcanic soils of vineyards in Campania, Italy, provide good minerality, and this wine, which is aged in stainless steel, delivers a fresh quality because of the absence of oak.
