CONTENTS SOCIETY WHO INSPIRES YOU? IF YOU WERE AMONG THE HUNDREDS OF GUESTS who gathered at The Ritz-Carlton this week to salute the Women of Achievement Class of 2014, you didn’t have to look too far for a source of motivation. Have you ever considered being a foster parent? Perhaps Linda Sher’s example can pave the way: Five dozen foster kids have been welcomed into her home through the years. Do you enjoy teaching? Follow the lead of Virginia Braxs, who mentors Latino kids preparing for college. Do you want to do your part to help heal the sick? Get to know Diane Levine, who has devoted much of her life’s work to helping those afflicted with HIV and AIDS. The great thing about being honored as a Women of Achievement is that these ladies aren’t content to rest on their laurels. Turn to p. 20 to read about Joan Quicksilver, who, in 1966, was the youngest-ever to receive the award. If you know Joan, you know that she keeps on keeping on.

There’s sure to be plenty of oohs and aahs at next week’s LANDMARKS ASSOCIATION’s Most Enhanced Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation. This year’s ceremony takes place at the newly renovated SUN THEATER in Grand Center on Thursday, May 22. The theater, which has been vacant for decades, was recently restored by the Lawrence Group for the use of the Grand Center Arts Academy. The Most Enhanced Awards honor trades people, rehabbers, architects and developers for their work on historic buildings throughout the St. Louis area. For tickets and more information, call 421-6474 or visit landmarks-stl.org.

It was a surprise this week for two area high school teachers, the winners of the PEABODY ENERGY Leader in Education award for the 2013-2014 school year. De Smet Jesuit High School math teacher and department chair DANIEL LIKOS and Notre Dame High School family and consumer sciences teacher BEVERLY MILLER were each surprised with the honor during May 14 assemblies at their respective schools. Likos, who works to engage students by making math fun and interesting, created the Math Problem of the Week, where students try to decipher a weekly logic puzzle. He also created the school’s Mathematics Academic Team, and runs an after-school math tutoring program. Miller teaches practical life skills like nutrition and child development. She also moderates a class in which students use the skills they learned to give back to the community by sewing for fundraisers and cooking meals at Ronald McDonald houses. Each award recipient received a $1,000 check.

A 28-year teaching veteran has been named the ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY’s 2014 Educator of the Year. PAULA BERNER currently teaches at Litzinger School in the Special School District. As an educator for students with special needs, Berner organizes Litzinger’s Holiday Musical each year, where every child plays a role, regardless of his or her disability. Her students also attend Symphony education concerts at Powell Hall and have taken part in the Symphony Volunteer Association’s Instrument Playground program for several years. Berner received her award on stage earlier this month from music director DAVID ROBERTSON. Bravo, Ms. Berner!

PAUL BROWN’S PERSONS OF INTEREST

JOAN QUICKSILVER

The Silver Belle BY PAUL BROWN

Louis marketing and public relations was Ruth Jacobson, who became the first female executive at Fleishman-Hillard. Quicksilver acknowledges her as the person who carved a path for women in PR in St. Louis—a path Quicksilver followed. And it wasn’t long before she was named creative director at The Savan Company. It was there in the mid-’70s that Quicksilver says she took an even bigger step out of the age of overwhelming male domination. “One day, I discovered that a young man who was working for me was making a lot more money than I was,” she recalls. “When I questioned it, the response was, He’s a man, he has a family to support, so I quit.” Quicksilver then became the founding partner of IQ & Associates; and for 18 years, she managed campaigns for the Saint Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Symphony, the Fox Theatre, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Kool Jazz Festival, KMOX Radio and KPLR-TV, among a long list of others. She even helped introduce Coors Beer into Budweiser’s front yard. “I worked for Coors,” she says. “Now, some would say I was a masochist, but they contacted me and told me they were moving in to St. Louis. Mr. Coors came here and I introduced him to the hierarchy of St. Louis.” Even in those days, Quicksilver says she still had to make some accommodations to a few men who just couldn’t get used to a feminine equal. “When I wanted to meet with a client for lunch, I had to call ahead to the restaurant and give them my credit card information. Men just couldn’t handle that a woman was going to pick up the check.” Today, Quicksilver is as active as ever, maintaining a schedule that would be overwhelming for some

people half her age. Her client list is more manageable these days, but includes the ever-expanding Lodging Hospitality Management group, which just unveiled the beautifully restored St. Louis Union Station Grand Hall to the public earlier this month. Quicksilver also spends much of her time as a volunteer by serving on boards and chairing events for groups such as Gateway to Hope—A Breast Cancer Lifeline, Doorways, Dance St. Louis, Women of Achievement (she was the youngest ever to be honored), Jazz St. Louis and Cancer Support Community, to name a few. Quicksilver is passionate about cancer research: She is a breast cancer survivor and lost her husband, Don, to colon cancer. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is her love for the New York Yankees. Quicksilver moved to St. Louis from New York when she was 15. Once, as a young girl, she got to sit next to Babe Ruth at a Yankees game, where he autographed her scorecard. That autograph is just one of many pinstripe memorabilia—her home is filled with it: everything from a toaster that brands a slice of bread with the team logo to a sculpture of Lou Gehrig and a miniature of the old Yankee Stadium. She’s almost as proud of those keepsakes as she is of the photos of her beloved late husband and her family. She says her biggest achievement was raising her four sons. And after all those years of telling the stories of others, here Joan was, sitting down with me to talk about herself. She just couldn’t quite accept that today, the spotlight was on her story—a story that probably wouldn’t have been well received by the Mad Men of Madison Avenue. But that era is long gone, and Joan Quicksilver is still commanding your attention, ready to make her next pitch.

AS ONE OF THE FEMALE PIONEERS OF ST. LOUIS PR, SHE HAS SEEN WOMEN GO FROM BEING MINIMALIZED IN THE INDUSTRY TO NOW BEING DOMINANT INFLUENCES.

A native St. Louisan, Paul Brown is a lifelong journalist, and previously served as a broadcaster for KMOX and KTRS radios and ABC 30. His Paul Brown Media specializes in public and media relations. 20

ANY OF US ARE TUNING IN to the final season of the wildly popular Mad Men to see how it will all work out for Don Draper and the rest of the team at Sterling Cooper. In case you haven’t seen it, it focuses on the people who worked in the advertising business on New York’s Madison Avenue in the 1960s. It was then that a handful of powerful agencies shaped the images of many of the products and brands that are still household names today. Some of the episodes I watched were, quite frankly, a bit shocking. I guess I just never realized that some of the excesses of that era (sex, drugs and rock-n-roll) were part of the culture of some of the agencies—at least, that’s what the show would have us believe. One of the true-isms of the show is just how difficult it was for women to survive in that kind of male-dominated atmosphere. It was right around that time when St. Louis began to get its share of the national marketing business. Enter Joan Quicksilver, who started her career a decade or so following the Mad Men era, and has since become a household name not only among local public relations circles, but also throughout the community at-large. As one of the female pioneers of St. Louis PR, she has seen women go from being minimalized in the industry to now being dominant influences. Quicksilver made her mark by writing and producing musical shows that were performed at charity galas in the late ’60s and ’70s. In those audiences were people like G. Duncan Bauman, Bob Hyland, Gussie Busch and the biggest name ever in St. Louis public relations: Al Fleishman. “Al Fleishman was my mentor because we had worked on several charity projects together,” Quicksilver says. “One day, he said to me, Ya know, you need to go pro. But he insisted I still give 50 percent of my time to charitable organizations—and I did.” In those days, the only big-name woman in St.

LIV ING BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES

Brand Power S

TARTING THIS SUMMER, PRUDENTIAL Alliance, Realtors, will become Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate, co-owned by Andrea Lawrence, CEO; Kevin Goffstein, president; and Bob Bax, executive VP. “We’ve been with the Prudential Real Estate network for more than 20 years; and in the last year-and-a-half, that network was sold,” explains Lawrence. “In the course of time starting from last fall, all the Prudential brokers will have the opportunity to move to this new brand.” Bax notes that the 26th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend study named Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices the Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year. “The power of the brand is a definite benefit for our sellers and buyers,” he says. Will this rebranding bring anything else new for clients? “We think this will be a great opportunity for clients to work with a company that has the name recognition and resources of Berkshire Hathaway,”

BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN

Lawrence says. “We think it’s a company that is really leading the way in the real estate industry. For consumers, it means more recognition, more market share and more opportunities to have their home sold.” It also means more services. “We’ve already reached an agreement with a new home warranty company that has a superior product for our clients; [and] signed an agreement with a technology company to do our website [with a new] client-relation management program—all stemming from the affiliation of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices,” Bax says. “We felt like it was important for our company to stay on the cutting edge… And we felt like Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices was the place to be for that,” Lawrence adds. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices features a Luxury Collection Program, which Bax says includes special marketing and more for its upscale properties.

Co-owners Bob Bax, Andrea Lawrence and Kevin Goffstein

In the market for your own luxurious home? The 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom, Wildwood home pictured on the cover features a 2-story great room, seethrough fireplace, 4-car garage and high-end additions, Lawrence notes. “It’s a very beautiful upscale stone residence—it almost has the look of a castle.”

Turner sees more couples gravitating toward formal affairs in late 2014 and coming up in 2015, as opposed to the more casual winery-based receptions that were popular in 2013. “That doesn’t mean you have to be formal and stuffy,” she notes. “You can be elegant, while having playful, whimsical pops that are relatable to the guests and unique to the bride and groom.” To bring in touches that really reflect the couple, Turner and her staff spend a lot of time getting to know them, she says. “The more time you spend with someone—whether it’s family or friends, or in this case our clients—the more you get to know the

hen working with brides- and grooms-tobe, Kate Turner, founder of Kate & Company, says her first priority is to give each couple a wedding that reflects their taste and personality. “The places that we work out of are often quintessential hotels, but we don’t want the guests to walk in and say, This is really pretty…but it’s just like the last time I was here,” she says. “We want it to be reflective of who they are.” And it’s possible to do that without being kitschy or cheesy, Turner notes. A formal affair can include personalized or whimsical touches just as easily as a more casual reception. WEDDING WISDOM

CHILDREN AND WEDDINGS

M

OST BRIDES WANT TO have the traditional flower girl and ring bearer for their wedding day. Having said that, it seems that more and more couples do not want children at the reception. This is a sticky wicket, indeed, but it can be done properly. Technically, if you address an invitation to ‘Mr. and Mrs. John Doe,’ you will assume the recipient/s understands that only they are invited—not their friends and not their children. However, over time, people have become less socially savvy, or they pretend they don’t know, or they simply ignore the basic rules of etiquette. What this does is put the burden on the host to make it obviously clear that children are not invited. One way that was very popular about 10 years ago was to add some text in small font onto the lower left-hand corner of the reception card that read: Adult Reception. That comes across as a bit awkward, but it’s certainly clear. If your wedding has a website, a more subtle way is to incorporate your wishes somewhere in the ‘Details’ page. For example, you can create a section called ‘Child Care,’ and have it say something like this: As this is an evening event and we want our guests to enjoy a carefree experience, we have gathered a list of highly recommended local babysitters. This is really helpful if you’re having a destination wedding or having your wedding in a big city. In a smaller town, where everyone knows everyone else, this might come across as somewhat odd. The foolproof way to get what you want (a child-free reception) is to hire a sitter for the evening. Let all the guests be aware (through the website or an insert card with the invitation) that there will be an off-site sitter should they require it. This might get a bit expensive, but it’s worth it—it’s the very best way to get the desired result without an awkward conversation. Rent some movies and order a pizza to be sent for the kids’ dinner. You’ll be a hero to the kids—and they definitely won’t be at your reception. So when you’ve done all this and you still get back an RSVP card that says ‘4 people’ when you’ve invited two, it’s just time to give up. At a recent wedding, a mother with a baby stroller (the size of a Chrysler) pushed the stroller right

BY JOHN SULLIVAN

MORE AND MORE COUPLES DO NOT WANT CHILDREN AT THE RECEPTION. THIS IS A STICKY WICKET, INDEED, BUT IT CAN BE DONE PROPERLY. down the center aisle where the runner would be. She parked her Chrysler—err, baby stroller—sat down and fed her infant. I had no objection to any of this, except for her choice of location for the stroller. The sad part was she didn’t understand why I wanted to move the stroller. (Go figure!) There are some weddings (usually with large families) where children are welcomed. Some brides love to see the kids dancing and having

fun at the reception. If this is your scenario, you might consider a separate menu for children, as well as a separate table. If it’s a late reception, you may want to have some pillows and blankets, because excited children usually get tired rather early. Make sure they have at least one adult babysitter. It’s perfectly fine to have a family-inclusive reception or a very elegant adults-only affair. The decision is up to the bride and groom—it’s their day and their choice. However, I do not suggest inviting some children and not others. Getting the evil eye from a new sister-in-law because her children weren’t invited is not a great way to start your new life. (Think about it!) Oh, and leave those Chryslers out on the parking lot!

Engagement

Engagement

Elisabeth Burack and John Bradshaw

M

r. and Mrs. Harry Burack of Chesterfield are overjoyed to announce the engagement of their daughter, Elisabeth, to her middle-school sweetheart, John Bradshaw, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bradshaw of Chesterfield. The couple met in sixth grade at Parkway Central Middle School, and were immediately smitten. Their love and affection for each other grew through the years, despite attending different colleges and then living in different states to pursue their careers. But 15 years after they met, John surprised Liz in their sixth-grade classroom with dinner, roses and a proposal. They will tie the knot in St. Louis in September. Both are 2004 graduates of Parkway Central High School. Liz graduated from Washington University in 2008, where she was a Danforth Scholar and earned her bachelors with honors in fashion design. She also was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. After college, she worked in New York City as a fashion designer for Tommy Hilfiger. She now designs for Kohl’s in Milwaukee. John graduated in 2008 from the University of Missouri, where he received his bachelors with honors in biology. He also was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He has worked for Stryker Corporation in Baltimore and New York City, and is now a sales rep in Milwaukee for the company’s endoscopy division.

Catherine Mae Klotz and Samuel Beck Stufflebam

M

r. and Mrs. David Klotz are excited to announce the engagement of their daughter, Catherine, to Samuel Stufflebam, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Brian Stufflebam of St. Charles. The future groom is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Rogers of St. Louis. He graduated from Westminster Christian Academy before receiving his bachelors in international business at Taylor University, where he also was a member of the track team. He works as a financial adviser at Edward Jones. The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dickerson of Chesterfield, and Mrs. Elizabeth Klotz and the late Kermit Klotz of Ladue. She also attended Westminster Christian Academy, and received her bachelors in education at Samford University. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and now works as a physical education teacher at Kirk Day School. Though the couple met in seventh grade, they didn’t begin dating until after college. They are planning a June 21 ceremony at Central Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark. They will honeymoon in Jamaica and reside in Clayton.

CREVE COEUR DENTAL

Something to Smile About BY BRITTANY NAY

W

HEN A GROOM-TO-BE WANTED A photo-ready smile for his big day but didn’t want to break the bank, he turned to Creve Coeur Dental for an affordable alternative. Dr. Humaira Rosinksi fitted him with a template of teeth that fit over his existing smile. And at his wedding, the smile makeover shined. “When you give someone their smile back, you’re also giving them their confidence back,” Rosinski notes. “They’re not afraid to smile anymore.” Creve Coeur Dental’s staff strives to make patients smile throughout the dental work process and beyond by providing stress-free, affordable dentistry. The family practice uses the latest technology for adults, teens and children when offering general, restorative, cosmetic and emergency dentistry, from dental implants, crowns, bridges and orthodontics to teeth-whitening. Rosinski says she realizes that the dentist office is a scary place for many patients. So, Creve Coeur Dental offers anxiety-ridden patients a series of

consultations before a dental work appointment is scheduled. And from the moment clients walk in the door, the practice aims to offer a friendly, calming environment. “I want to make sure my patients come first, and they are not stressed,” Rosinski says. “Their comfort is the first priority.” To that end, the staff first works to minimize patient waiting times. “We have them sit in a consultation room instead of a dental chair so they’re not building up that anxiety just sitting in the chair,” Rosinski explains. During an initial consultation, Rosinski asks about where the patient’s anxiety is stemming from and works to alleviate it. “The biggest thing is to listen to them,” she says. “And once we recognize where the anxiety is coming from, we try to eliminate it: Do they want music or the TV on, or do they want it to be quiet? Do they want one or two people in the room, etc.?” Next, Rosinski examines patients’ dental Continued on page 85

PREGNANCY AND DENTAL CARE

“IT’S SOMETHING THAT’S BEEN MISUNDERSTOOD, AND IT’S GOOD TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.” DR. DAVID WEINSTEIN, chief of obstetric/ gynecology at Missouri Baptist Medical Center

Better Safe than Sorry

A

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

MONG THE MANY CONCERNS pregnant women have, the question of whether it is safe to visit the dentist comes up on a regular basis, says Dr. David Weinstein, chief of obstetric/ gynecology at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. “I’m glad

you’re covering this, as it’s something that’s been misunderstood, and it’s good to set the record straight,” he says. Women—and even some dentists—express concern about dental X-rays, anesthetics and even cleaning techniques. However, Weinstein points to a 2013 committee opinion issued by the American College of Obstetricians and

Gynecologists (ACOG). The opinion states that to potentiate general health and wellbeing, women should routinely be counseled about the maintenance of good oral health habits throughout their lives, as well as the safety and importance of oral health care during pregnancy. In other words, “the major concern is that the avoidance of dental care could turn small problems into very large problems that could impact a patient’s overall health,” says Dr. Gilad Gross, director of the division of maternal-fetal medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and director of perinatal outreach for SSM Health Care. “ACOG states that dental cleanings, X-rays and local anesthetics are safe in pregnancy,” Gross says. “The X-rays done in the dental office are not associated with the amounts of radiation to cause concern. However, it is still recommended that abdominal shielding is done to limit exposure.” Weinstein adds that women also should feel safe in getting dental fillings and root canal procedures as needed during pregnancy. Good oral hygiene is important during pregnancy to help avoid periodontal disease, which may cause inflammatory responses that have been implicated in preterm births. The ACOG opinion states, “Although some studies have shown a possible association between periodontal infection and preterm birth, evidence has failed to show any improvement in outcomes after dental treatment during pregnancy. Nonetheless, these studies did not raise any concern about the safety of dental services during pregnancy.” Weinstein notes that gums can become more tender and likely to bleed during pregnancy, yet pregnant women need to brush, floss and receive dental exams as usual. There is no conclusive evidence regarding dangers associated with dental bleaching, however professional opinions vary regarding whether or not pregnant women should avoid this procedure. “Part of a general and thorough history is to ask patients if they have dental problems; and if they do, they need to not delay care,” Gross says. “Often, there is an assumption that they should table care until the pregnancy is over, and it is our job to make sure that they get the care they need in a timely fashion.”

Medical Matters uncle was in an accident and since then he’s experienced facial Q: My paralysis. Although his health has otherwise fully recovered, his face still droops. What can be done for this?

Facial paralysis, or facial droop, is a disfiguring condition with significant medical and emotional consequences. Those with facial paralysis are at risk for other medical problems, including vision changes, nasal obstruction, oral incompetence and facial muscle spasms. Common causes of facial paralysis include stroke, trauma, tumor removal and Bell’s palsy.

The goal of facial paralysis rehabilitation is restoration of facial form and function. Treatment options are determined by the degree of facial paralysis (complete or partial loss of function of all or some branches of the facial nerve) and the cause and duration of the paralysis. The duration of the facial paralysis plays a critical role in planning a treatment strategy. In cases of early diagnosed facial paralysis, the neuromuscular junction between the facial nerve and the muscles of facial expression remains viable. Treatment is directed at reconnecting the muscles of facial expression on the affected side to a neural input — either the facial

nerve or another cranial nerve. Depending on the nerve that provides the neural input that drives the facial muscles, the ability to smile may or may not be spontaneous. One may have to re-train his or her brain to use another nerve to activate the smiling muscles. In cases which patients experience an extended period of facial paralysis (18 months or longer), the neuromuscular junction deteriorates and is no longer functional. In these cases, re-innervating the native facial muscles is not sufficient. However, options for treatment still exist. A new nerve-muscle unit can be introduced for a dynamic reanimation of the face. This is accomplished through a free neuromuscular transfer or a dynamic muscle repositioning procedure. Alternatively, a static facial suspension can be performed for a static reanimation of the face. Treatment of facial paralysis ranges from Botox® injections, to physical therapy, to facial reanimation. A facial plastic surgeon can help decide which treatment options are best suited to an individual’s needs.

Winter damage in bamboo culms at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Killing Thyme in the Garden

ART OF THE JOY OF GARDENING IS THE DAILY surprise. Sometimes, conditions conspire to make a garden look tired and worn, such as extreme summer heat compounded by drought. Those days, while disappointing, must be endured. However, on other occasions, gardeners may draw a lucky hand when strange combinations of conditions bring about splendid moments. This year, for example, the long, cold soil temperatures slowed down the early varieties of spring bulbs; then good moisture and warm sun brought out the late-season kinds right on schedule. After the winter of death, we needed a break.

Worst Winter for the Evergreen Woodies For all of our woody evergreen trees and shrubs, we are taking our lumps now. The wait is almost over in the final call for the living and the dead. The hollies took it squarely on; with big leaves dried by winter winds, most have suffered substantially. The good news is this: Continued on page 72

LN LANDSCAPE

New leaves are beginning to push off the dead ones and stem death seems to be spotty. Expect your hollies to recover quickly. The word is not so good for camellias. If you have any that survived outside, please let me know. We are awaiting word on the cherry laurels, too. The evergreen magnolias may look horrible, but they will pull through. This species (M. grandiflora) is a great indicator of varietal and placement differences for winter damage. I’ve seen almost-dead established trees, such as the one at the corner of Tower Grove and Magnolia avenues in Tower Grove Park, that may have been killed part way down the trunk, and others that show almost no damage at all. Learn from this that some varieties are more winter-hardy than others, that well-watered plants withstand drying winds better than dry ones, and a sheltered location can make a huge difference in outcome. The yew and boxwood hedges have had a very rough time. But the yew will be fine, and I thank the deer for a free pruning. Just stay away from my hostas! The boxwood have lost a lot of leaves and many suffered from sectoral kill. If you are brave and willing to cut off years of growth, they may recover from the base with even growth. If you only remove the dead, you will be looking at a misshapen plant for years. Judge them carefully. My neighbors lost three out of four boxwood entirely. When replanting, search out more winter-hardy varieties.

Don’t rush the Nandinas. Heavenly bamboo is a staple in Chinese gardens so we planted lots of them last year. With three different cultivars, I have some observations to share: About half of each variety seems to have perished. They still will get some time on the clock as, only yesterday, I noted small, dark reddish-brown leaves emerging. I’ll give them another month before digging them up. There is absolutely no hope for the Confederate jasmine. The net of dead vines is brittle and the roots have no elasticity. Same holds for the Carolina jasmines, normally hardy only to Zone 7. There is one notable hardiness exception: Gelsemium sempervirens ‘Margarita’. Julie and I planted one about six years ago and it has grown lushly and bloomed happily on a trellis there ever since. Surprise Survivors The snow line defined some survivors. The two plants that pulled through to my total amazement were the gerbera daisy in my cutting garden—heavily mulched and under snow—and the vitex along the drive. Julie reports no signs of life on hers yet, but mine has just popped out some little silver pearls of growth below the snow line. It was only an act of faith in nature that kept me from hacking out the stump of the vitex prematurely as I pruned out the know-to-be-dead upper branches. Waiting, in this case, paid off. The verdict on crape myrtles is still hanging in the balance. All of the top growth is surely

dead. My neighbor called me in to check on her 20-year-old tree. Normally, I would have advised more waiting, but the bark split was so severe that letter-sized sheets were peeling off. Still, try taking a chainsaw to the top, leaving 4 to 6 inches, and wait for another few weeks before capitulating. The Hardy Herb Garden Killing Thyme takes on new meaning after a winter like this one. I’ve used many varieties of thyme as fillers and spillers on the path through my country rock garden. Almost all of the ‘fancy thymes’ died: The lemon thyme is gone. And the orange-scented cultivar. So, too, the silver-edged varieties. It seemed that the wooly thyme had perished, as well; but careful waiting has provided me with strong root sprouts on almost every clump! Since most thymes are listed as hardy to Zone 4 or 5, their mortalities suggest this winter reached into those cold zone numbers. My kitchen has a new window that we added last fall. While it faces due west, it is sheltered from the brightest light of the afternoon. The large, potted rosemary loves it. It is the only surviving rosemary in my garden; the ones in the ground perished in frigid anguish. On first look, it seems the oregano had gone away entirely, but patience proved out and sprouts Continued on page 85

Over the Moon SO, WE’RE ALL PAINFULLY AWARE THAT language is fluid and evolving—we have YOLO to thank for it, after all. Words change and new words crop up all the time. Ginormous is now a word—a real word—not something cute your 3-year-old says. I actually think in this mile-amillisecond world, language is doing more than evolving, it’s trending—and the word ‘trending’ is an example. New words are hip, boss, keen, even though those descriptors are not…or are they? Did I mention language also is cyclical? Words are stretched and deconstructed and truncated and manipulated into common usage. Some gather momentum, others peter out (phat). One of the current words in the spotlight is moon, or more accurately, honeymoon. Honeymoon (hunni moon), n. 1. A vacation for a newly married couple. There’s also ‘babymoon,’ a vacation an expectant couple takes before the baby is born. Much like the greeting-card writers at Hallmark, it seems the marketing department at Expedia is working overtime, and it’s paying off. A babymoon is the hot pregnancy trend. It makes sense. It’s really the only time you’re ever going to travel with an infant where you don’t have to stress about it crying on the airplane. There also is a ‘mini-moon,’ a small trip, a weekend away, after a wedding, when the couple is too busy to take a full honeymoon. Hollywood stars might take a mini-moon after a celeb wedding, as shooting schedules would prevent

Debbie Baldwin

TANGENTIAL THINKER the glamorous trip for which they have the money, but not the time. Really, the possibilities are limitless: Phi Moon: the first weekend away a college couple takes Warren Moon: a vacation with your husband where you spend the weekend fantasizing you’re with a professional athlete Some Young Moon: a honeymoon with a trophy wife Full (house) moon: a trip for a married couple with more than two children younger than 5 Acrimoon: an outing for a couple contemplating divorce to try and reconcile Like I said, limitless. Moon now simply means a couples’ trip. So any excursion that a twosome may take can now be deemed a moon. New types are cropping up as we speak. Maybe this weekend, I will leave Cranky, Whiny and Punch to fend for themselves, grab my husband and head down to the Four Seasons to unwind: That would be called a once in a blue moon.

REVIEWS THEATER REVIEW BY DEBBIE BALDWIN

Fading Gigolo

PIMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE RATING: 3 out of 10

I

T OCCURS TO ME THAT IN movies, turning to the sex trade to supplement one’s income always seems to be a far more plausible proposition than in real life. So I guess we are just going to have to operate on the assumption that prostitution is—how should I put this—a viable option for the average Joe. Apparently, it also is an option for the average Josephine. Fioravante (John Turturro) is a part-time florist who is having trouble making ends meet. When his friend Murray (Woody Allen) tells him that his dermatologist (Sharon Stone) mentioned she was looking for a ‘professional’ to participate in a threesome, Murray suggests Fioravante be the stud in question. (Now, if you are willing to let the idea that a doctor in the confines of an examining room during a consult would engage in such personal, inappropriate, unprofessional, illegal, unethical, creepy dialogue...by all means, stay in your seat.) Fioravante agrees, and soon he is feathering his nest, pleasing the lonely ladies of Bensonhurst. Everything is going swimmingly until he falls in love with a potential client, a lonely Hasidic widow, Avagail (Vanessa Paradis). Of all the words that come to mind when thinking of this movie, the one at the forefront is absurd. Almost every circumstance in the film is so implausible I can’t imagine anyone reading the script without wondering if the writer was joking. Turturro is a brilliant actor and his directing is excellent; the screenplay, however, in another story—well, I wish it were another story.

ZONING VIOLATION RATING: 3 of 10

I

WANTED TO LIKE THIS movie; I really, really did. I love the cast. I love the premise. I even love the tip of the hat to the underrated 1981 Belushi/Aykroyd film of the same name. And that’s where the compliments end. Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) live in their dream house with their adorable baby. As they adjust to parenthood, they teeter on that beam between hip, young parents still connected to single life and a boring married couple. When a college fraternity buys the house next door, their convictions are put to the test. Fraternity president Teddy (Zac Efron) wants his senior year to be legendary. Mac and Kelly want Teddy to achieve that status without waking their baby. When it becomes clear that they cannot coexist, it’s war. The movie is stupid. That’s all: no more, no less. I wanted to walk out a handful of times, but stayed hoping against hope that there would be some redeeming plot twist. Alas. Here’s the thing: If three pretty good jokes and Zac Efron shirtless are enough to get you to the theater (and I’m not being pejorative, sometimes that’s plenty), then by all means.

Old Jews Telling Jokes BY MARK BRETZ

THE STORY You want a story? There is no story, per se. This one-act comedy consists primarily of five performers delivering old jokes, new jokes, clever jokes, silly jokes, risqué jokes and a few unfunny jokes as they ‘work the room’ for yuks and lots o’ smiles.

HIGHLIGHTS: New Jewish Theatre artistic director Kathleen Sitzer is presenting the first professionally licensed production of this more or less stand-up routine since its New York City OffBroadway version ran from May 2012 to September 2013. Like that presentation, which was inspired by a website called OldJewsTellingJokes.com, the New Jewish Theatre version steers away from video clips of non-actors reciting favorite jokes. Instead, it wisely utilizes the clever comic talents of a quintet of performers under the direction of NJT artistic associate Edward Coffield for a fun-filled season finale. Calling Old Jews Telling Jokes a play is a stretch, because it isn’t really a conventional comedy at all. It’s simply an ongoing string of jokes, essentially a stand-up routine delivered by Coffield’s capable quintet that bunches humorous one-liners or slightly longer bits of amusement by categories such as marriage, vacation, families, etc. Only Bobby Miller appears as a ‘character,’ as an elderly Jewish gentleman named Nathan playing with his omnipresent cigar, while regaling the audience with his share of amusing asides. He has the second-best joke of the evening, about pickles. The other four performers — Dave Cooperstein as Reuben, Johanna Elkhana-Hale as Debbi, Craig Neuman as Morty and Stellie Siteman as Bunny—are, like Miller, not ‘old’ at all—albeit Jewish—and dressed in comfortable attire.

COMPANY: New Jewish Theatre VENUE: Wool Theatre, Jewish Community Center, 2 Millstone Campus Drive DATES: May 17-18, 21-22, 24-25, 28-29, 31, June 1 TICKETS: $37-$41; contact 442-3283 or newjewish theatre.org RATING: A 4 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews.com

Each of them shines maneuvering through a smorgasbord of yuks, with Cooperstein deftly delivering the show’s very best joke (to my subjective ears), about a ‘talking’ dog. Coffield keeps it all running smoothly enough, although he couldn’t do anything with the few jokes that fell flat. In the best tradition of Henny Youngman, though, the best way to follow a dud is with a rapid-fire succession of funny one-liners, which this cast handles with aplomb. If, like me, you’re partial to Mr. Youngman and his upbeat approach to humor, you’re likely to be laughing until you cry at several of these silly shenanigans. And, if Coffield’s cast agrees with the show business maxim that Dying is easy, comedy is hard, they nonetheless are so adept at milking a line or 12 that you may definitely appreciate how funny they truly are.

DINING OUT

spicybits BY MATT SORRELL

Hearty congratulations are in order for local chefs GERARD CRAFT and KEVIN NASHAN. As we told you a while back, both were in contention for the James Beard Awards Best Chef: Midwest title. They came close, but lost out to Chef Justin Aprahamian of Milwaukee’s Sanford restaurant, who took home the top prize. Thanks for representing us so well, chefs…next year! It’s been announced that national chain Cantina Laredo will be opening a location in Centene Plaza in Clayton. The new restaurant should begin serving up its signature modern Mexican fare—which includes plenty of ocean-fresh seafood and scratch-made salsas—sometime in November. Congrats to St. James Winery, which took home Grand Champion honors at the recent 2014 Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernadino, Calif., for its Friendship School White wine. St. James also won four other Gold / Best of Class awards for its Moscato, Riesling, Friendship School Red, and Strawberry wines. St. James Winery Peach wine also received a gold medal, and six other wines received silver or bronze medals. The folks behind LuLu’s Local Eatery food truck now have a brick-and-mortar location at 3201 S. Grand Blvd. Look for plenty of the same quality sustainable fare available on the truck.

Blind Tiger at Sutton Place

A Toast to Pizza

BY SIDNEY LEWIS

THERE’VE BEEN A BUNCH OF NEW PLACES opening up on the local dining scene specializing in either whiskey or pizza. The Blind Tiger at Sutton Place in Maplewood offers a bit of both. It’s an interesting combo, which we recently investigated. The space itself can be disconcerting on the first visit. The cavernous corner building has been a piano bar and a burlesque theater—among other things—in recent years, and it continues to retain the vibe of a performance venue. There’s still a large stage, and relatively minimal seating, so the first impression is that you’ve entered the wrong place. Remain calm, there is indeed pizza and booze to be had. We’re told the stage is still put to use with the occasional DJ and live music. Size aside, the atmosphere at Blind Tiger is comfortable and laid back. Plenty of good soul music from Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Al Green played during our visit, and the mismatched thriftstore plates and used tomato cans that serve as stands for the platters of pizza add to the casual, funky feel. The whiskey list is heavy on American styles like bourbon and rye, with a smattering of Scotch and Irish whiskies also available. We decided to sip on a dram of Knappogue Castle ($13), an Irish whiskey that doesn’t appear on many lists around town. We also were impressed that the spirits selection didn’t bow to the dubious trend of ‘flavored’ whiskies—nary a honey- or cinnamon-spiked spirit to be seen. Beer-wise, there’s a small selection of local brews on draft from the likes of 4 Hands, Civil

Life, Urban Chestnut and Schlafly (we got a pint of 4 Hands Divided Sky Rye IPA for $6) and a handful of interesting bottles, as well. We started off with the Giardineria salad ($8), an amalgam of pickled veggies topped with some Parmigiano-Reggiano. Since the official Blind Tiger logo lists Pizza, Ribs and Whiskey as the main events, we felt compelled to complete this trifecta; so for our mains, a half order of ribs ($8, $15 for a full order) and a 10-inch build your own pizza ($9). The ribs are billed as being brined overnight, then braised with a house-made bourbon marinara sauce. The ribs were super-tender, separating from the bone with no effort whatsoever. The ribs actually could’ve been served sans sauce of any type— they more than stood on their own. There are four signature pizzas available in either 10-inch or 16-inch versions, and all sound like solid offerings, but we decided to get creative and do our own thing. This creation ended up consisting of pepperoni, olives and peppers with the house marinara sauce on a really crisp thincrust base. Gluten-free crust also is available—and as with the house pies, you can get a 16-inch do-ityourself version, as well. It was a tasty, no-frills pie, and at a reasonable price to boot. All in all, Blind Tiger is a solid anchor for this bustling stretch of Manchester, and a fine entry into the recent pizza and whiskey fray.

ROBINS APIARIES

The Sweet Spot THE NEXT TIME THIS COLUMNIST SWEETENS her tea with a little honey, she will have a brand new perspective on what is on her teaspoon. Honey is honey, right? Not so, according to Jim Robins of Robins Apiaries in St. Charles. “All my life, I have known the difference between honeys—that different sources make different flavors of honey,” Robins says. “I was amazed when I found out that many people believe that all honey tastes the same, so I started to keep the honeys separate, and bottling and labeling the honey so that people could tell the difference and know how the flavors are distinctly different.” Robins had a terrific teacher—his father. One of the founders of the American Honey Producers Association, Leonard Robins started keeping bees in 1922; as a teenager, he founded Robins Apiaries. Robins notes that his father lived and breathed bees and honey, so it’s probably not a surprise that, at a very young age, he taught his son how to work with the hives. “My father had me out with the bees when I was just 9 years old—I think that’s called involuntary servitude,” Robins laughs. “And I hated it for a long time. But when I got into my late teens, I thought, You know, this isn’t so bad, and then I thoroughly got into beekeeping.” In the mid 1950s, the business underwent a major expansion, taking its number of hives up to 3,600; and after his father died in 1970, Robins ran the total number of hives up to 8,000. He currently has 400 hives. “I’m an old guy now, you have to remember that,” he says with another chuckle. “But I’m producing quite a bit of honey with the 400 hives, and I’ve been going to the farmers markets at Tower Grove Park and at Schlafly.” Robins’ honey also is available at Local Harvest Grocery in the Tower Grove neighborhood and Great Harvest Baking Co. in St. Charles. And the flavors of honey that Robins Apiaries offers? They include Black Locust, Wildflower (mostly Dutch clover and white sweet clover), Alfalfa, Edamame and Cotton honeys. “The Edamame and Cotton honeys come from southeast Missouri and my son (David Robins),” he explains. “So, it’s not local in that it does not contain the local pollen grains that can possibly help with allergies, but it is Missouri honey. But the other honeys are from the St. Louis area.” According to Robins, who has hives in 30 locations around the St. Louis area, many of his customers tell him that they use his local honey to help with their allergies. “Now I am not a doctor, but if you’re trying to treat your own allergies, you’d better be eating the pollen that’s causing your problems,” he notes. “The flora/fauna used to make the honey needs to be the same as what the person is

82

living with and breathing in every day. People like to use the term ‘local,’ using miles as the determining factor, but that’s not true with honey.” Robins says that his favorite among his honeys is the Black Locust with its mild flavor. “It’s light and delicate, and a lot of people like to call it ‘tea honey’ because they can sweeten their tea and have it still taste like tea. When you use other honeys, well, you now have honey-flavored tea.” Perhaps a column on honey would be lacking without a mention of those dedicated working bees and their queen and their importance on what we eat. So, this columnist asked. Robins’s response: “It’s something like 30 percent of all the food we eat that the honeybee was involved in pollinating a plant. So, if you don’t have the honeybee, you don’t have the pollen and that plant is no longer in the mix. And what are left are those plants that are wind-pollinated like wheat, barley and rye. Those plants you would lose would be most of your fruits like apples

and watermelons, because plants of that nature depend on insect pollination. I have hives on some farms right now; and one of those farmers recently told me that when I put my bees on his place, he had the biggest boost in production that he had ever had. He told me, Please don’t ever move your bees. They do make a dramatic difference in our lives.”

issues—with their permission—in the treatment room. “I do let them know that the tools are not going to hurt them, and all I am doing is taking a look. Then I offer them a treatment plan accordingly” Once the staff and patient all are on the same page, a dental appointment is scheduled. Sedation is offered to clients who still need anxiety relief for the procedures. “They take it a half-hour before the appointment; and when they arrive, we give them a blanket in a room with dim lighting,” Rosinski explains. Building a stress-free environment that encourages even the most fearful patients to come in is important not only for their dental hygiene, but also their overall health, she adds. As a further commitment to patients, Creve Coeur Dental also provides a variety of specials and financial assistance. This month, patients can receive Zoom in-office teeth-whitening for halfoff the regular rate, saving an additional amount if they bring a friend. The dental practice also has begun offering new services, such as singleoffice-visit root canals for added convenience, and Botox injections for temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders. “We have patients [with TMJ] who have tried almost everything, and they are in tears from the pain,” Rosinski says. “Then we give them the injections, and they experience immediate relief.” Whatever the procedure, Rosinski says the patient always remains the No. 1 priority. “I want to make sure I listen to my patients and diagnose them in a way that prioritizes their needs. I treat them the way I want to be treated.”

the family’s Irish heritage, which is very near and dear to their heart.” The place settings included placemats with a modern feel, layered with rustic patterns, and centerpieces made from 4-foot birch logs carved with the couple’s initials. . Items from the linens to the food were locally sourced to reduce the event’s carbon footprint, she adds. The chef also incorporated spices and vegetables from the brother-of-thebride’s farm. On the other end of the spectrum, a latespring wedding Kate & Company is working on will take place at Busch Stadium, Turner says. The couple wanted to incorporate baseball elements, without being too overtly Cardinalsthemed, she says. The bridesmaids will carry colorful 14-inch pinwheels instead of flowers, while the groomsmen will wear pinwheel boutonnieres. The theme will be carried over to the reception with pinwheels of varying sizes in the centerpieces, which will tie into other vintage memorabilia that the couple enjoys. “My philosophy is, It’s not our wedding—it’s yours,” Turner says. “The best advice I can give a bride is, if you hire a professional, really trust them. Just because I had a formal wedding doesn’t mean I necessarily want you to have a formal wedding. We want to understand the bride and groom—and the things they love—to design a day that is theirs.”

are now rising from deep below the mulch. The summer savories are gone, but the winter savory is pulling itself together and making a comeback. The lavenders looked horrid but are starting to bud out again, so just trim off the dead wood. Potted mints have failed to show any signs of life yet, but the in-ground ones are beginning to rise again. And my parsleys have emerged victorious with full hardiness and a willingness to bloom early. Buffaloed by Blonde Bamboo? Bamboos have raised the most frequent questions from friends and neighbors. Bamboos—as very large grasses—have a different set of body parts than most evergreen plants. The tall, vertical shafts are called ‘culms,’ not stems. Winter damage varies by species and exposure. Most of the large, running bamboos in this area are Phyllostachys. Like my clumping Fargisias, they are all showing degrees of leaf and culm damage. Most, if well established, will be perfectly roothardy. What remains to be seen is whether they are leaf-dead or culm-dead. Patience. Wait for really warm weather. If the culms send out new leaflets at the nodes, keep them. How YOU Can Help If you have had any outdoor survivors of rosemary, jasmine, camellia, fig or banana, drop a note to us at LNLandscape@mobot.org.
