SOCIETY THEY SAY A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS. IT’S CERTAINLY the case when it comes to our 7-year-old cover girl, Ari. In the words of Ari’s mother, who sent a note to Kids Rock Cancer project director Peggy Musen, the day meant so much more than just a photo shoot.

In the days leading to having her picture taken, Ari spent time planning her outfit and getting her nails done—instead of thinking about how many times she felt sick that week or how her new chemo meds were making her tummy hurt. And during her infusion, rather than just sit through the treatment, Ari excitedly told all the doctors and nurses about her upcoming photo session.

Ari’s mom ended her note by saying thanks for honoring her daughter with this opportunity. On behalf of Maryville University and everyone else involved with Kids Rock Cancer, I’d have to say it was Ari who honored us with that sweet smile. For more of Ari’s story and how Kids Rock Cancer is helping children like her, turn to p. 18.

The evening’s festivities started with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a sumptuous dinner. Then it was off to the concert hall to experience McFerrin’s new project, Spirit You All. Proceeds from the gala, chaired by David and Thelma Steward, along with honorary chairs Tom and Carol Voss, benefit the concerts, gallery exhibitions and educational programs of The Sheldon.

OME 1,300 AMERICAN FLAGS lined Lindbergh Boulevard leading up to the Skip Viragh Center at of Chaminade for the premiere screening of the film, Honor Flight, presented by Greater St. Louis Honor Flight. Along with the flags, there was patriotic music from the Francis Howell Middle School Band, military equipment displays by members of the Second Ranger Battalion, as well as active duty military to salute the 70 veterans who came to view the film. The film showcased the importance of the Honor Flight Program, and the plight of the veteran community.

A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion and Chess, which opens Oct. 19, is produced by an international team of thought-leaders, curators, fashion insiders and chess players. The exhibit will chronicle how storytelling, as well as various archetypes of the queen, have inspired fashion. FOOD OUTREACH (a 2012 Charity Award winner) has new artwork adorning its walls: TOKY Branding + Design created a massive ‘fork wall’ in honor of the organization’s 25th anniversary, highlighting the 5 million meals served to more than 12,000 clients over the years. It took approximately two weeks to assemble the wall, which was unveiled during the recent ‘A Tasteful Affair’ event at the Four Seasons. The artwork now hangs in the community room at Food Outreach’s Midtown headquarters.

MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY’S KIDS ROCK CANCER

“We work with children with cancer on a number of levels,” says Tom Eschen, Maryville’s VP of Institutional Advancement. “It’s a diversion. It makes them feel better and forget about the chemo and the treatments. For an hour-anda-half, they are a rock star.”

Arianna—known fondly as Ari—is practically a Kid’s Rock Cancer Hall-of-Famer, and she is looking forward to this month’s ‘I’m With The Band!’ concert to benefit the program.

According to her mother, Lori Zucker, Ari has created four songs with the program throughout her almost four years of treatment. “It was such a nice break,” Zucker says of the recordings. “For

her, she totally can forget about what’s going on.”

Ari’s breakout single, Cheesy Booty, was inspired by the puffed rice snack, Pirate’s Booty— an understandable muse for a 3-and-a-half year old. We’re Gonna Ring That Bell, her next track, was recorded with another patient in reference to the bell patients ring after finishing treatment.

Camp Rocks, Cancer Sucks featured Ari and her two older brothers, and the trio was even able to sing the song at a fundraiser for Camp Rainbow.

Her latest track, You Can Get Through It, is written for other children with cancer.

After four years of treatment, Ari has words of wisdom and hope to share, and she has done so through song.

“We have had an amazing experience,” says Ari’s mother, noting she is often kicked out of the hospital room by her daughter so the song can be a surprise. A portable sound studio comes right to Continued on page 84

TEVE SCORFINA IS A CLASSIC GUITAR picker in a couple of ways: A ‘picker’—like the ones on the reality show, American Pickers—is someone who combs through old barns, estate sales, antique shows, etc., looking for vintage collectibles to buy and sell. Scorfina and his girlfriend, Kathleen Sullivan, have spent the past 20 years or so looking for ‘picks’ from one end of the country to the other. Antique guitars and English china are two of their specialties. Scorfina also is a ‘guitar picker,’ as in guitar player. Actually, that’s a huge understatement: Scorfina was once the lead guitarist for legendary rock band REO Speedwagon, and later, the iconic ‘70s St. Louis band, Pavlov’s Dog. Regular readers of this column know that I grew up in Ferguson—so did Scorfina. His family lived near mine, in a classic, white Victorian home with a wraparound porch at Adams Street and Catherine Avenue. Behind their home was a large carriage house that just happened to be the perfect place for a band to practice. On hot summer nights of my misspent youth, I would hear a band jamming from that old carriage house, and there would also be a party happening inside and out. I would ride my Schwinn Stingray (then later, my ’72 Vega wagon) to cruise down Scorfina’s street to the muffled sounds of screeching guitars and bass drums.

The parties were epic, but what I didn’t realize at the time was that the sounds I heard coming from the carriage house were actually slices of rock ‘n’ roll history. It was REO and Pavlov’s Dog and Steve Scorfina becoming part of local m u s i c fo l k l o re . “ I never threw the parties. It was always my sisters, but I got the blame!” Scorfina says with a laugh.

He and I are reminiscing at a bar table inside Rockers on Main Street in St. Charles, where he still performs and loves to tell stories about those early days in Ferguson. “In 1969, REO was booked to play at the Music Palace on the Rock Road, so we had a few days in-between. We practiced in the carriage house, but there were always a lot of other people like Bill Bruford of Yes and Mike McDonald, who jammed there—absolutely.”

That’s Michael McDonald of Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and a multi-platinum recording artist in his own right, who also happens to be a Ferguson boy and lived down the street. “We

started a band called The Majestics in 1963. Mike was 11, I was 13—that was our first band.”

The Majestics landed gigs playing Kingsmen songs and tunes like Won’t You Come Home Bill Bailey. Scorfina then started The Good Feelin’ in 1965, and played at the Castaways Teen Club alongside acts like Muddy Waters and Kenny Rogers. In 1969, Scorfina got a call from now-mega-promoter Irving Azoff, who was looking for a lead guitarist for REO, which at the time was an unknown group from Champaign, Ill. Scorfina played with REO for two years and wrote the band’s first original song, Gypsy Woman’s Passion. He says he left REO because— among other things—he wanted to focus on making music to help end the Vietnam War, while Azoff was focused on creating a rock empire.

As the war was ending in 1974, it was back to his parents’ carriage house, where he teamed up with three musicians from Ladue (David Surkamp, Rick Stockton and David Hamilton) and three more from U. City (Mike Safron, Richard

Nadler and Doug Rayburn) as Pavlov’s Dog. The band’s manager, Ron Powell, signed the group to $650,000 contracts with both CBS and ABC records. But according to Scorfina, the band’s money went missing, and Powell later went to prison for tax evasion.

“It’s a long, complicated story,” says Scorfina as he shakes his head and admits that a lot of the stories about his career are “long and complicated.” Scorfina is now 63 years old now and still a rocker with a new band, Soul Steel.

Scorfina and girlfriend Kathleen still are antiquing, looking for ‘picks,’ but with more time for music. On May 30, The Pageant will host the premiere of the HEC-TV documentary on the history of rock music in St. Louis titled Something in the Water. Following the screening, Scorfina and a St. Louis all-star band will take the stage. So if you catch that show (or Soul Steel) with Scorfina’s guitar rockin’ just like the carriage-house days, then consider yourself lucky, you just made a pretty good pick.

“Our ‘day of’ service is where we come in for the last 90 days and help with the finishing details,” says owner Katie Fogerty. This includes timeconsuming specifics, such as creating timelines, counting RSVPs, explaining parking and scheduling vendors. “The last 90 days can be a stressful time for any bride.”

With the assistance of Kate & Company the day of the wedding and the three months beforehand, details about the big day are understood and the bride is familiar with the staff—a combination that could offer more relief and assurance than working with a stranger for merely a few hours.

While picking out colors and patterns may seem right up a bride’s alley, the overwhelmed feeling can sprout from any bridal decision, no matter how comfortable she is in event-planning. “It’s more about the feeling of how everything comes together,” says Fogerty of brides’ predicaments.

According to her, one common problem can be décor: With chargers, linens and flowers coming from multiple sources, seeing the end result isn’t easy. “It’s really hard to visualize— if you don’t do this on a regular basis— how they’re going to come together on the table… and who is going to put them on the table.” Not only can Fogerty and her team take care of tablescape set-up at the event, she can do so beforehand in her showroom to make sure it meets the bride’s approval.

riting your thank-you notes should start right after any engagement party you may have. If people are kind enough to give you a gift, a lovely handwritten note (on a fold-over note card, written in black ink) is a priority—a priority you should carry all through the bridal shower, cocktail parties, rehearsal dinner and wedding events.

I usually send my wedding gifts to the bride’s mother’s home. I feel it’s a little declasse to bring presents to the ceremony or reception. Having sent my gift early, some very conscientious (and socially knowledgable) women have sent me a lovely thank-you right away. And why not send them right away? It will keep you caught up, and you will come across as a woman of grace.

Always mention the gift—except money, when you may say something like, We are saving your gift toward a down-payment on a house.

But for instance, if someone gives you a bowl; mention it, how you intend to use it, and how grateful you were to see them and hope to see them soon.

I have about 50 wedding etiquette books. There is not one that says you have 30 days or six months or a year to send thankyou notes. I think the person who made up that timeline is probably the same low-class clown who said you have a year to send a wedding present.

Never use anything computergenerated for a thank-you card, and make 100 percent sure that you spell the person’s name correctly. And this may come as a shock, but about 90 percent of the people who gave you a gift do not want a picture of you. Do not enclose one.

If you use a monogram on your stationery, sending thank yous for any gifts received before your wedding should have your maiden name initials. For gifts sent after the wedding, if you choose to use monogrammed notes with your married name, use your maiden name as your second initial.

Let me straighten something else out: You are not required to send any vendors a thank-you note. It is deliciously wonderful if you do, but these things are superfluous and are social niceties above and beyond your responsibilities. Payment in full usually is thank you enough.

atie Lynn Goldenberg and Jeffrey Scott Winters were married on November 10 in a ceremony officiated by Rabbi Carnie Rose. The ceremony and reception were held at Westwood Country Club.

The bride is the daughter of Barry and Susan Goldenberg, and the granddaughter of Seymour and Sunny Goldenberg of New Jersey, and Beverly Tober and the late Charles Tober of St. Louis. A graduate of Parkway Central High School and Indiana University, Katie now works as a recruiter for KForce, a professional staffing firm.

The groom is the son of Bradley and Jill Winters, and the grandson of Arline Kalishman and the late Marvin Kalishman, and Lou Anne and Morley Winters. A graduate of Ladue Horton Watkins High School and Miami University, Jeffrey is now director of business development for Kiosite, a St. Louis-based technology company.

Katie’s maid and matrons of honor were her former college roommates, Lauren Kull, Judith Katz and Shana Koransky. Callie Bearman, Leslie Loeb, Rebecca Schultz and Rebecca Soloman served as bridesmaids.

Jeffrey’s brothers, Doug and Jimmy, stood as his best man and groomsman, respectively. Katie’s brother, Michael, was also a groomsman, as well as Anthony Casaccio, Aaron Feldman, Jeffrey Goldstein, Steve Vredenburgh and Ben Weiss.

The newlyweds, who live in St. Louis, honeymooned in Hawaii.

The bride-to-be is a 2003 graduate of Incarnate Word Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science from Missouri State University in 2008. She teaches physical education at Christ the King Parish School in Kansas City, Mo. The future groom grew up in Harrisonville and graduated from Missouri State University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science. After college, he joined the company founded by his grandfather, Family Center Farm & Home. He now owns and manages its Paola, Kan., location.

Because Katie and Blake, who met at college, hail from opposite sides of the state, it was only fitting that they got engaged at its very heart. Last July, Blake surprised Katie with a trip to a winery in Rocheport, halfway between their hometowns. There, as the sun set over the Missouri River, he proposed.

The couple will be married on May 25 in a ceremony held at Mildale Farm in Edgerton, Kan. After honeymooning in Europe, they will make their home in Olathe, Kan.

ou relax as the chair warms and massages your back. Soothing colors surround you, and calming music fills your ears. No one can interrupt this 30 minutes just for you. No phone calls, no demands, no guilt about just being still and doing nothing— with your mouth wide open.

For many busy people today, a trip to the dentist can mean a halfhour of blissful ‘me-time.’ It’s one of the few excuses we have to lay in a comfy recliner and chill out while other people wait on us. Yet, there still are some individuals who don’t consider a dental appointment to be quite so spa-like.

“I would say that most dental-phobics develop early in childhood, and a lot of it has been passed down by fearful parents,” says Dr. John Boain of Boain Dental Care. “Sound is another issue. People tend to hate the sound of the drill, or any grinding or crunching sound.”

Bring in the headphones. Noise-canceling headphones that play music or TV audio are available in many dental practices. Other recent accoutrements include massaging, heated procedure chairs and offices designed with relaxation in mind.

Dr. Albert Mina recently relocated his dental practice to new offices on South New Ballas Road and intentionally created a calming environment. “The office environment needs to be soothing and relaxing,” he says. “We’ve taken a lot of care with our decorating and paint colors and so forth. A lot of patients tell us this office is very soothing, and we feel good about providing this environment for our patients.” Mina also emphasizes the warmth and soothing welcome offered by his staff.

“When patients come in, we greet them with a smile and let them know we’re here to serve them.”

Patients who are getting braces are among the most nervous, so Dr. Peter Crump of Webster Groves Orthodontics focuses on pre-procedure communication to help quell anxiety. “I speak in great detail to patients and parents about treatment and what to expect, and I encourage our patients to ask any and all questions that they may have regarding their treatment at any specific appointment,” he says.

Dr. Humaira Rosinski of Creve Coeur Dental also emphasizes the importance of establishing a good relationship with the patient. “When a person first walks into the office as a patient and the doctor sees that patient for the first time, I think it’s very imperative that they form a relationship where they can each trust each other and are comfortable about talking and recognizing the core pieces that cause that person to be anxious,” she says. “Once you establish that relationship with a patient, you knock off at least 50 percent of their anxiety right away.”

For those who simply can’t get past their anxiety, sedation is an option. Nitrous oxide, known as ‘laughing gas,’ still is used to help panicky patients relax, and stronger forms of sedation or anesthesia may be available depending on the situation. “Sedation dentistry is always an option, but I truly feel that it is rarely needed if all other efforts are made,” Boain says.

So sit back, relax and enjoy that half hour just for you.

I

n the two years since Dr. Humaira Rosinski began practicing at Creve Coeur Dental, her schedule has grown busier and busier as word spreads about her practice style and skill. She estimates that her patient volume has tripled and notes that new patients often are referred by friends or family of existing patients.

Asked about her practice philosophy, she says, “It may sound cliché, but ‘do no harm’ is my first response to that question.

I would much rather do what is best for the patient than do something that puts extra money in the bank.” For example, Dr. Rosinski has talked patients out of the idea of dental veneers, opting instead for more conservative treatments that retain the natural tooth structure while still offering cosmetic enhancement.

Dr. Rosinski first entered the dental profession with undergraduate training at Baqai University in Karachi, Pakistan.

She earned her second doctorate at New York University and completed residency at Yale University before practicing forensic dentistry as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Now settled in St. Louis, she practices general dentistry and enjoys the variety and challenge of complex cases.

“I think I like (complexity) so much because it requires me to always think of the patient’s whole health,” she says. “I guess I’m a fairly complex person, so I like handling complex treatment plans.”

For instance, she notes that patients with complicated medical histories and chronic disease must be treated in light of how any medication or anesthetic affects other organ systems and health concerns.

Dr. Rosinski notes that developing ongoing relationships with patients and their families is her favorite aspect of her work.

“Dentistry is about relationships,” she says. “You care for people within inches of being face-to-face, you place your hands inside their mouth, you heal pain, you maintain health, you help restore or improve appearance and confidence.”

The mother of a 2-year-old, she also enjoys treating children. “I can’t believe how much (my daughter) has made me love other kids,” she says. “I changed from being that lady at the restaurant who rolled her eyes and complained about someone else’s kid to the lady who tells other moms how beautiful their son or daughter looks.”

Dr. Rosinski’s father provides the overarching message that guides her in work and life: First deserve; then desire. She explains: “What he meant by this was, work hard and put yourself in a place to deserve good things. Then look at what you want and see if you still desire it.”

Bad breath can turn a romantic moment into an embarrassing faux pas. Yet thousands of people suffer from ‘halitosis,’ the medical term for breath that may be just a bit garlicky—or breath that can peel paint off the wall.

“Between 85 to 90 percent of bad breath is caused by oral bacteria’s byproduct, volatile sulfur compounds,” says Dr. Sherine Apte of Dental Care STL. “Most of this bacteria is found in dental plaque, which is found both on teeth and coated on the posterior of the tongue.”

Dr. Kevin Postol, a St. Louis area family and cosmetic dentist, agrees that bacteria is the usual culprit. He adds that bad breath may be due to infections of the sinuses, tonsils or adenoids, breathing through the mouth or taking

medications that cause dry mouth, certain types of pungent foods, stomach and intestinal ailments or ulcers, smoking and drinking alcohol.

If chronic halitosis is a problem for you, start by brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, as well as brushing or scraping your tongue. Drink plenty of water and use sugar-free breath mints or gums to help stimulate salivation, Apte suggests.

“Brush properly with a ‘power brush,’ (a toothbrush with oscillating or vibrating bristles) because they really do help. Overlap the brush onto the gums and use it slowly,” adds Jeanmarie Market, a dental hygienist with Ballas Dental Care.

When ‘Green’ is Gray

HE WHOLE ‘GREEN’ MOVEMENT is finally catching up with the design industry here in the United States, with many architects and designers doing their best to be environmentally friendly with the materials they specify for a new home.

Years ago, the environmentally conscious fabrics that were available were the most hideous options to choose from. I am convinced that a flower child from the ‘60’s would not have used them on their VW bus!

Not to mention that ‘going green’ usually meant spending a great deal more for such products—a result of the manufacturing industry trying to figure it all out.

Thankfully, that no longer is the case. Of course, many things such as wood, natural stone, cotton, linen and wool were already part of that Continued on page 66

Enter The Design Source Limited (led by Kris Keller), R.E.A. Homes (under Jeff Bogard), architect Dave Schaub of Schaub & Srote, and I. O. Metro. Together, they have incorporated a design-build concept that has proven to be very successful for them. A main objective was to introduce coastal design to the Midwest and a home on Sherwyn Lane in Creve Coeur is their inaugural effort.

This creative team has taken the idea of a

‘green’ home and elevated the look with the shade of gray, infusing the color in almost every aspect of the design.

Keller, the project’s lead interior designer, was responsible for many aspects of the design process. Schaub came up with the original footprint for the home, which was then detailed by Keller’s in-house architect. Keller is most proud of the custom millwork that she specified, using a rift-sawn oak with a gray wash. This element was effectively used to unify the spaces.

A Mid-Century-inspired design, the home offers 4,721 feet of sustainable luxury. Upon entering the home, a serene floor-to-ceiling waterfall sets the tone. Keller has an amazing talent, incorporating tile in the most creative ways into all of her projects. Floors, backsplashes,

walls and ceilings are all a blank canvas for her and she ‘paints’ them with natural stone!

This home has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, a luxury for each child or guest to have their own water closet. The large windows allow sunlight to flood each space.

I. O. Metro’s design team used metal, pottery, driftwood sculptures, bamboo panels and other natural elements as accessories to bring texture and harmonize the spaces.

The end result of this collaboration is a home with two green certifications: Energy Star and National Green Building Standard.

We’re told this green, high-performance luxury home was recently purchased—furnishings included—by a Rams player and his wife. The design team certainly did it right the first time!

A

REVERENCE AND RESPECT FOR WATER IS a universal theme, found in cultures from ancient Greece to the remote Pacific Island of Vanuatu. The ritual significance of water spans across the globe to include the Native American rain dance, Christian baptismal font, the gleeful splashing of the Songkran water festival of the Dai New Year and the solemn funeral pyre on the Ganges.

Learning to manage water is an important part of our shared community. Well-handled water can be cleansing, refreshing, energizing. Out-of-control water has the power to drown and destroy.

Too Much of a Good Thing Our recent April deluges may be bringing out our May flowers, but the damages from local flooding

are not so pretty. The runoff rate in developed areas may be as much as 70 percent higher than that from healthy wildscapes. In St. Louis, we know the dangers of floods all too well given our proximity to the Mississippi, Missouri and Meramec rivers.

As urban development spreads, there are more impermeable surfaces that create more storm water runoff. When rain water lands on hard surfaces, including the roofs of homes, garages and sheds, driveways, patios and sidewalks, the rivulets race to the lowest places and spill off of private property into their neighbor’s as it works its way into the public watershed. Even compacted soils under lawns can contribute to the increased rate of runoff.

Unmanaged storm water races into creeks and streams, carrying with it pollutants such as lawn fertilizer, herbicides and oil-laden roadway runoff.

The speed and volume of water washes away unsecured soil, erodes creek banks and undermines bridges. When a multitude of small streams spill together, rivers rise beyond pre-development levels, resulting in property damage. To make matters worse, sewer systems are often inundated and spew their bacteria-laden contents into open waterways, making them unsafe for human contact.

Continued from page 71 on the gentle downhill rain seepage that came from our uphill neighbors. A little moisture movement can be well used. When we moved to the top of the hill a few years later, the new boxwoods were tiny and stayed that way forever. Later in life, as a landscape design professional, one of the most frequent complaints was that an owner’s landscape was drowning from a neighbor’s storm water runoff.

The solution is simple. Controlling water flow near where it originates can be accomplished with many small solutions. Fortunately, many solutions are fun, easy, beautiful and green!

Simple Solutions Storm water runoff has been easy to address in our garden. We are on a hill with undisturbed woodlands, so all I needed to do was to manage the rain from the drive, roof and terrace. Our driveway has broken the flow of water into three pieces, each easier to handle than the former major deluge that used to channel down straight to our garage door.

Houses on smaller yards are more challenging.

Rainwater can be harvested from downspouts.

Larger sections of lawns can be removed and converted into a loose soil and mulch herb garden.

Mulch can be increased on landscaped beds to absorb rainfall and keep plant roots cool and moist during the heat of summer. Lawns should be aerated

yearly to keep turf thick and allow for better rain water infiltration. More trees can be planted to filter and slow water on the way down. Gardeners are always looking for excuses to dig another hole!

Rainwater Management Ideas and Resources Have fun with your own opportunities to manage rain. The easiest and most rewarding solutions for water flow management are based on green infrastructure, or plant-based solutions, and are right up our gardening alley. First, put on your rain boots and trot out into the next pouring rain. Watch where your runoff gathers and flows. See what water leaves your property and trace it back to the source.

Explore your possible solutions and consider the beauty and added value that a rain garden might provide. Much more attractive than most commercial retention ponds, a home rain garden might be as small as 8 by 10 feet per downspout. It can add seasonal interest, increase biodiversity, solve drainage problems and alleviate downstream issues. If you plan to put in a rain garden now, you may even be eligible for 75 percent rebate, up to $2,000 per property, from the RainScape Rebate program (see sidebar box).

DIVERSIONS Describe the new work the company will be performing this season. We thought it would be great to have a new jazz opera. Champion (June 15 to 30), which is co-commissioned by Jazz St. Louis. It is co-written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Michael Cristofer and jazz composer Terrence Blanchard, the son of an opera singer—so he has opera in his blood. It follows the life of Emile Griffith, former world welterweight champion, but it is ultimately about any person who goes through a lot of pain, and then redemption.

How does Opera Theatre impact performers’ careers? Corinne Winters, who stars in The Kiss (June 16 to 28), is the perfect poster child for what Opera Theatre does. Her first opera job in 2009 was in the chorus, and she has been back ever since in increasingly prominent positions. Then, we awarded her a $10,000 prize to help support her budding career, and she used that to go to Europe to audition for La Traviata—and got the lead! It opened in February in London, and the headline in the London Evening Standard was: Corinne Winters Steals the Show as Violetta.

ITH A LOYAL LOCAL FOLLOWING AND rave reviews from The Wall Street Journal to The New York Times, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis continues to draw adoring audiences from throughout the world. And its new season is set to be no exception. General director Tim O’Leary recently filled us in on the company’s worldwide impact and its four new shows, to feature classic and modern opera, jazz, romance and comedy.

Talk about Opera Theatre’s presence, locally and internationally. Opera Theatre has a national profile and always has specialized in discovering major star singers when they are about to be household names in the opera world. Last season, audiences came from 43 states and 12 foreign countries. In order to draw that, you have to have something truly unique.

Tell us about the international arts conference you recently attended. The Chief Executive Program run by National Art Strategies assembled 100 international art CEOs—from museums, theaters, zoos and more. I was one of three opera representatives. One meeting was at Harvard Business School, where we had this think-tank role to discuss what the future of arts and culture will be in a world that is changing rapidly. The main message is to recognize the rate of change in today’s world. We are driven by things like the Internet and a vast amount of competition that exists for consumers really means that cultural organizations must be relevant in offering value. I always say it is not our job to talk about how we’re valuable, it’s to be valuable to the community.

Tell us about this year’s opening show. The Pirates of Penzance (May 25 to June 29) is beautiful, tuneful and hilarious. Gilbert and Sullivan were sort of the Monty Python of their time, so it’s just a beloved classic about pirates who are not good at being pirates because they are too tender-hearted.

Starring as Mabel, Deanna Breiwick (Johanna in Sweeney Todd last year) is recently out of Julliard and just joined the Metropolitan Opera. She is incredibly charismatic, which is perfect for the character, so it is just fireworks.

What is unique about attending an Opera Theatre production? We’ve had an incredibly loyal base of subscribers since the company began. People get addicted to it because the experience is so immediate—with 987 seats, a small theater by opera standards—the performer is communicating directly with the audience. Even for people who don’t think they like opera, a lot of them are converted here.

We perform in the English language because opera is meant to be understood, so that means things that are unbearably, tragically beautiful are much more so because the audience is hanging on every word… and things that are funny are actually funny.

What can audiences expect from your other classic production this season? Il Tabarro and Pagliacci (June 1 to 29) is a blood-and-guts Italian opera, where there is a fake audience watching the fake show of a murderous love triangle—but the fake show turns out to actually be happening. The fake audience doesn’t know, but the real audience does, so it is just a dynamite show. It stars Kelly Kaduce, one of the greatest singing actresses alive. People get grabbed by the throat, and it is unforgettable.

Beyond the stage, describe the atmosphere before and after the shows. When I moved to St. Louis, I couldn’t believe how welcoming a company it is. The artists feel like they have a home here, and the whole vibe before and after a show is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in the country.

There is a relaxed and informal picnic in the garden beforehand; and after, people stay and have drinks in the tents and the cast always come out to mingle with the audience.

UDIENCES WILL BE IN THE MIDDLE OF the action during this year’s Shakespeare Festival St. Louis’ performances of Twelfth Night in Forest Park. New stage-side seating will place patrons amid the live music, romance and comedy in Shakespeare Glen. Executive director Rick Dildine recently gave LN a sneak peek into the much-anticipated 13th installment of the free annual event, running this spring from May 24 to June 16, with preview plays May 22 and 23.

We understand this is your directorial debut in St. Louis. Yes, which is exciting and also nerveracking—but it’s a good nervous. Preparations are going really well—sets are being built, costumes are being constructed and there is an incredibly talented cast that is making my job very easy.

What will be in store for patrons prior to the shows? Every night from 6 to 8 p.m. will be the Green Show. We will have performers, jugglers and musicians who roam the grounds performing. And we will do a 20-minute version of the play for kids.

Describe the atmosphere backstage during the shows. It takes so many people to put on the festival. For every one person you see onstage, there are three to four others behind the scenes working.

During the course of the festival, there are at least 80 people on the payroll.

Talk about how these are one-of-a-kind performances. In addition to having live music for the first time, there also is going to be a special groundlings section, where the audience can sit inside the set. It was very inspired by the Globe Theatre in London. Audiences will be feet from the action.

Talk about why you chose Twelfth Night for this year’s show. Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s best comedies, and it just so happens to be my favorite Shakespeare play. I wanted to do a comedy this season. And I wanted to get the artists excited and the community excited, as well. This play is an excellent opportunity for actors with characters they flock to, and an exciting design world for our designers because it takes place in a utopia that looks like nowhere or anywhere.

Will the show be classic Shakespeare-style or have a new spin? We wanted to tell a very simple, classic story. It is inspired by the Romantic time period in the early 19th century. This story is really about love, so I wanted to frame the show in the time period where actors could really embrace that.

Tell us about this year’s cast. Two actors are returning to the show—Viola will be played by Kimiye Corwin (Ophelia in the 2010 show, Hamlet), and Malvolio will be played by Anderson Matthews (Polonius in Hamlet).

HE PSEUDOAlpine facade of S c h n e i t h o r s t ’s has been a landmark at the corner of Lindbergh B o u l e va r d a n d Clayton Road for almost 60 years. In recent times, the lot has been altered somewhat. Now the restaurant is part of The Village at Schneithorst’s, a development that includes several retail establishments that cluster outside the restaurant like a feudal village. While the building and the surroundings may have changed, the food at Schneithorst’s remains—in many ways—unchanged.

Sc h n e i t h o rs t’s i s s p l i t between the Bierkeller (the bar area) and the main restaurant. The Bierkeller replicates a European cellar pub atmosphere, replete with stone walls and ceilings; while the restaurant, where we dined, was more like your grandmother’s kitchen, bright with lots of light-colored wood and assorted knick-knacks adorning the walls.

The Appetizers—or Vorspeisen—were a curious mix of pub favorites like onion rings, Teutonic specialties such as the German Sausage and Cheese Platter, and seemingly out-ofplace entries like the Louisiana Blue Claw Crab Cakes. We ended up ordering the Bier Gruyere Fondue ($11). The creamy cheese itself was fine, but the odds and ends that came with it for dipping were, well, a bit odd—slices of green apples, a few gherkins, pickled onions and several hard slices of hazelnut bread. Not sure if these are traditional German fondue accompaniments, but they didn’t add much flavor-wise to the dish as a whole, and the onions especially were hard to spear and dip.

From the Burgers & Sandwiches we opted for the Baron Special ($11), a charbroiled beef patty served open-faced and topped with cheese sauce and criss-crossed with two strips of bacon, along with two enormous onion rings and a handful of thick steak fries. Filling doesn’t even begin to describe this hefty sandwich. The cheese sauce had a nice tang to it; and of course, bacon is the ultimate addition to any burger, regardless of style.

Looking for something more traditionally German to sample, the Weiner Schnitzel ($19) from

the Dinner Entrees seemed the perfect fit. We got a veal patty that covered the entire plate, pounded paper-thin, breaded and served on a bed of spaetzel and a choice of veggie on the side (green beans for us). The veal was tender and the lemon caper sauce it came with lent a bit of bite. The breading wasn’t overdone and provided just enough texture. While the spaetzel was tender, it was lacking in the spice department and could’ve used some tweaking.

Prices across the menu were reasonable, the portions (ours anyway, and those we saw delivered to surrounding tables) were more than generous.

The food was simple and straightforward without pretense. These three things combined are a good indication of why Schneithort’s remains a go-to destination for so many area diners.

This 3-year-old Kids Rock Cancer program was inspired by the Texas organization, Purple Songs Can Fly, but features

one major difference: a music therapist. “The actual process is therapeutic,” Eschen says.

“The songwriting process is as important as the final product.” Tracie Heuring-Sandheinrich, a board-certified musical therapist, is the face of the organization to the children and helps with lyrics, background music and, of course, recording the albums.
