from the

Editor ‌While attending the University of Missouri, my favorite way to de-stress was by taking a drive to what was known as the Big Tree – an approximately 350-year-old bur oak tree in the middle of nowhere. You might be wondering how one de-stresses by visiting a tree; well, let’s just say that it was more about the journey than getting there. On winding back roads, the trip was approximately 30 minutes from my apartment, which translated to a 30-minute car ride with the windows down and singing terribly off-tune to music blaring at max volume with one of my best gal pals. In the years since graduation, my de-stressing downtime has lowered in volume, but there is still something about driving on an open road with the windows down that seems to make stress melt away. In this week’s feature in The Daily, penned by Test Drive guru Ryan Scott on p. 56, we delve into several high-performance convertibles that are perfect for sprawling country roads on a hot summer day. And in this week’s Abode section, contributing writer Nancy Robinson showcases three orangeand-navy products on p. 36 sure to make your home pop with fresh color this summer. Not only will this trio set a vacation-perfect tone in any room, but also each item is a playful and unique conversation-starter. All the best,

lways sought-after and never in enough supply, sleep can truly be a cure-all. So even if you are able to catch only a few precious Z’s among work, social events and family activities, why would you waste your time trying to sleep on a bed no longer properly fit for your needs? That’s where The Bedroom Store comes in. Built on landing you the best sleep of your life, the local brand won’t rest till you do. “We always stand behind our products with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee,” Brian Davis, GM of The Bedroom Store, says. “We really take care of people, so they’ll want to become repeat customers.” When you consider the true health benefits from getting a good night’s sleep, it’s important to take the object you lay your head down on very seriously. Luckily, the resident sleep experts do just that for you. Found at each location, these experts pride themselves on having the knowledge and ability to get each customer exactly what he or she needs. “It takes a lot to keep up with new technologies. We like to invest in our people, and I think it really shows,” Davis explains. Employees choose to stay with the company for years, including the Ladue location’s manager, Ron Sharpe, who will celebrate 30 years in 2016. Davis attributes the company’s success to its devotion to the community. “People expect great customer service, and we always stand behind our

products,” he says. “One of the things truly important to us is taking care of the local people. It’s a tight community, and we want to make sure they receive the best care.” The Bedroom Store delivers on that promise in two ways: by offering top-of-the-line beds, including Thomasville Air Mattress and Tempurpedic, and by giving back to the community. On June 5, the company teams with the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis for a charity walk in Forest Park. “Last year, we raised more than $250,000 for them, which is enough to run the organization for the whole year,” Davis explains. Expect to see The Bedroom Store popping up in more neighborhoods all over the St. Louis area, after opening eight new stores. The new locations provide new jobs to the community and allow for quicker deliveries to our customers, Davis says, “We don’t plan on going anywhere else. We’re staying right here in St. Louis.” From a lowprice guarantee and 90-night trial period to customizable beds and mattresses offering superior support, The Bedroom Store is sure to deliver on that good night’s sleep. Find your ideal slumber by stopping in at any of the 15 locations throughout the St. Louis area. Visit thebedroomstore.com for specific store information.

t. Louis Children’s Hospital hosted its annual spring event, Once Upon a Table Top, at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. This one-of-a-kind luncheon featured more than 50 elaborate tabletops created by local designers. The “Story Book”-themed event featured table designs from children’s classics such as The Secret Garden, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Harry Potter series and many more. In addition, the event included a boutique shopping experience for the more than 600 attending supporters. The presenting sponsor of this year’s event was Soft Surroundings. Annie Geile and Kim Oliver served as co-chairs, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s president, Joan Magruder, greeted guests. Proceeds benefit important programs and services at the hospital. So many people contribute to making it such a successful event – from the foundation staff, the committee, the boutiques and especially the designers who give the event such flair! This event creates so much awareness around what the friends group does for the hospital and also awareness to all the wonderful things going on at the hospital. With such a large, diverse audience, it’s a wonderful avenue for sharing the message about the hospital with the community. My hope in chairing this event is to build our group of advocates and spark an interest for others to get involved. – ANNIE GEILE, CO-CHAIR (SHOWN WITH CO-CHAIR KIM OLIVER, LEFT)

he Nine Network of Public Media held its annual Arts Are Alive event recently and brought together supporters and those influential in the arts to communicate the importance of such arts to a large audience. The program, which featured outstanding speakers, will be broadcast on June 27 at 7:30 p.m. This year’s topic of making the arts an essential part of the school curriculum (that is, “STEM to STEAM” – science, technology, engineering and math, joined by art/design) has become extremely important, as arts programs continue to be cut from school budgets. This year’s speakers were Holden Thorp with Washington University in St. Louis; Deborah Leto, the principal of Mason Elementary School; Jim McKelvey, the co-founder of Square, LaunchCode and Third Degree Glass Factory; Duane Martin Foster of Normandy High School; and Gene Dobbs Bradford, the president and CEO of Jazz St. Louis. ood Outreach held its 28th annual A Tasteful Affair at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. The soulful soiree featured St. Louis’ favorite restaurants and brewers, with a performance by jazz diva Kim Massie. Guests enjoyed a foodie’s dream-come-true, with tastes and temptations from more than 40 local dining establishments. Under the evening’s theme of “It’s Soul Good,” guests took a chance-encounter stroll down Bourbon Street, transforming the hotel into a surreal and phenomenal vista. Chefs and mixologists brought taste inspirations that included offerings from Cleveland Heath, Mai Lee, Sugar Fire, Sub Zero, Four Hands Brewery, Serendipity, Hannah Meneely, Juniper, SqWires, Tenacious Eats and Patty Long Catering. Co-chairing the event were Mary Sue Rosenthal, Marsha Lewis Keith Mosier and Jessica Healey. This gala from Food Outreach – the only St. Louis-area organization providing nutritional support to community members battling HIV/AIDS or cancer, in addition to food insecurity – raises funds to prepare wholesome, made-from-scratch, nourishing food and groceries to help clients who are indigent, who find preparing meals difficult or impossible, or who are in the workplace and can extend their employment by removing extraneous demands on their energy.

I love that we provide a very unique service to our clients, many of whom have been coming to us for years. We are supported by hundreds of volunteers and really caring staff members who make our mission worthwhile every hour of every day. – JULIE POLE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

or food-lovers, it was a smorgasbord, as Great Circle held its Chef’s Night Out event at the Missouri Athletic Club. Downstairs, guests enjoyed cocktails and wine and, initially, food from just a few area eateries, while also enjoying live music. The real fun came when the guests ascended the stairs to the main ballroom, where a side room overflowed with food from the rest of the 23 participating venues, including many golf clubs, private clubs, caterers and restaurants. Great Circle has become one of the most comprehensive providers of behavioral health services in the area, offering a vast variety of programs and services with a growing geographic footprint – and helping children, individuals and families not as a last resort but as a first step. AN ALTERNATIVE TO PAINT

M

By Robyn Dexter

onica Nechita of MonicaNechita Designs came on this Chesterfield project when a local builder referred her to a family that was looking for a new designer for their dining room. The room gets direct sunlight as a result of a floor-to-ceiling glass-window wall on the other side of it, and the paint job just wasn’t working out. The room initially had about six coats of paint on it of varying sheens, but the paint just wasn’t holding up to the direct sunlight for several hours a day. Nechita envisioned Venetian plaster walls, eliminating the issue of paint altogether and bringing in a fresh look. “I sat down and got to know the client, and we picked out the rug and furniture,” she says. “We went with warm tones to create the rich golden look of the dining room.” The client wanted to keep the burgundy wallpaper at the top of the wall, so Nechita worked that in with the multidimensional look of the Venetian plaster. In the end, Nechita and her team ended up signing on with the family for the rest of the home. “You really need the right team to bring your vision to life,” she says. Incorporating milkweed into your garden and landscaping is a vital part of pollinator conservation and simple to do.

M

onarch butterflies are making a comeback, and milkweed is part of the reason. After a several-year scare in which the monarch population was decreasing, this year, there appear to be more monarchs to help boost the important pollinator population, says Chris Hartley, an entomologist at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Efforts to plant milkweed seem to be paying off already,” he says. “There are other factors affecting the monarchs, such as conditions in Mexico [where the butterflies migrate for the winter] and the ease with which they can find nectar while they’re migrating, but if they don’t have milkweed, then they’re not reproducing, which is kind of important.” Milkweed, a plant native to North and South America and Africa, is crucial because it is the only plant that serves as a food source for monarch caterpillars. According to the Flora of Missouri online record, there are 16 native milkweed species statewide. “All but four of those are confirmed as ‘native’ to St. Louis County, according to the USDA Plants online records, so that would mean we have at least 12 native Asclepias in the St. Louis region and 16 found statewide,” says Cody Hayo, owner of St. Louis-based Pretty City Gardens & Landscapes. “Our area isn’t incredibly diverse, but we do have more native species than northern states,” he adds. Each species of butterfly has only one species of plant on which it will lay eggs, out of all the plants that occur in North America, Hartley explains. “Each butterfly is looking for one certain plant, called its host plant, and milkweed is the host plant for the monarch butterfly,” he says. Milkweed also provides nectar for butterflies and other insects, making it a positive addition to your backyard garden. In fact, publicity about the plight of the monarch butterfly in the past few years has increased the popularity of milkweed, Hayo says. But that is only one reason to consider incorporating milkweed into the garden, which is also known for repelling larger pesky wildlife. “Milkweeds do attract other insects, including bees, moths, wasps and other butterflies that are typically after the nectar produced by the flowers,” he says. “Also, some beetles, including the milkweed bug, feed on the plant sap. Deer and rabbits generally do not eat milkweed plants because the plants have an unfavorable taste, and the milky sap is toxic. Insects, such as the monarch and milkweed bug, have adapted to the sap and actually use the chemicals in the sap as a defense, making them unfavorable to predators, as well.” Several varieties of milkweed grow well in Missouri’s heavy soil and hot summer conditions. The plants have elongated leaves and clusters of small flowers that vary in color depending on the variety. When a milkweed is finished blooming, the spent blossoms become seed pods that elongate and eventually burst, allowing seeds attached to a fluffy silklike substance to float on the wind in hopes of landing in fertile ground and reseeding. Both common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) thrive in most gardens. However, Hayo notes that these plants grow to 4 feet tall or higher, so they should be planted where they will have the space needed for their size. The Missouri Botanical Garden website notes that common milkweed is most preferred by monarchs, grows commonly in tallgrass prairies and along roadsides, and performs best in full sun. Swamp milkweed performs better in full sun and moist soil, making it “an ideal rain garden plant.” “The butterfly milkweed [Asclepias tuberosa] is highly preferable for homegarden settings since the size is much more similar to other short perennials found in home gardens, though it does best in drier, well-drained soils and full sun,” Hayo says. Butterfly milkweed is also widely available, particularly in the ‘Hello Yellow’ cultivar. “It is better to have more than one milkweed plant per garden,” Hayo notes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has set a goal of 200 milkweed stems per acre for monarch habitat establishment, he adds. And once planted, native milkweed species are low-maintenance plants that only need to be pruned of dried stems in late winter or early spring. This allows insects that stay in the area through

winter to use the stems as habitats until new growth begins. Hartley is pleased that milkweed is becoming more popular. He says the plant has been reduced in the wild due to land development that destroys native landscapes. Though its name leads some people to assume the plant is an unwanted weed, he’s glad people are beginning to see how much milkweed can add at home. “These are really beautiful plants in native gardens,” he says. “While improvements in industrialized agriculture have meant less native ‘weeds’ for our native wildlife, the way in which we have landscaped our suburban homes using mostly non-native ornamentals has also translated into habitat loss in a big way,” Hayo adds. “Here is a chance, because of the monarch, that makes us realize that. It’s not all going to change overnight, and I’m not advocating that everyone tear out his or her landscape and plant only natives. But monarchs are a great starting point, and adding in a few milkweed plants to your garden will have an effect on that population.” In addition to milkweed plants, it’s generally a good idea to integrate other plants that flower throughout the season to provide nectar to adult butterflies, Hayo says. “Some great nectar-producing plants include purple coneflower [Echinacea], bee balm [Monarda], black-eyed Susan [Redbeckia], Aster [Symphyotrichum] and Goldenrod [Solidago],” he adds. To learn more, Hartley recommends checking out butterflyhouse.org/ projectpollinator. Pretty City Gardens & Landscaping, 314-282-1084, prettycitystl.com Sophia M. Lori Ann Malugen of Pink Magnolia

‌ illy Pulitzer fashions rocketed into stardom when L her friend and former classmate Jacqueline Kennedy was photographed wearing a “Lilly” shift dress in a LIFE magazine photo shoot. The signature Lilly Pulitzer look – bright colors in preppy, resort-worthy designs – is truly timeless, growing in popularity over the past decades. Ladue’s Pink Magnolia is one of only 75 signature Lilly Pulitzer boutiques in the country – and the only signature store in the state of Missouri. We spoke with owner Lori Ann Malugen to learn more about her shop. What types of products do you carry? We carry only Lilly Pulitzer women’s apparel

and accessories; jewelry and shoes in other brands such as Collard Greens men’s and boys’ ties, a line of high-end Italian jewelry, Eliza B flip-flops and San Diego hats. We carry Lilly’s whole line of stationery and gifts as well. Why Lilly? What stands out about this brand? I’ve known about Lilly most of my life. St. Louis has a real loyalty and following to the brand. Lilly has been around for 50-plus years, and it’s a great brand. The majority of our business is done in the spring and summer – people kind of forget about Lilly in the fall, but they have a great line in the

fall as well. “Resort 365” is the campaign – you can wear it every day, 365 days out of the year. What stands out about your shop? We’re a happy store. People walk in when it’s snowing and just smile. The prints speak for themselves – our walls are painted a cream color because the prints are so outstanding that clothes just pop. I feel like I have the best staff – I’m so blessed with the employees I have! We do a good job of embodying the Lilly story. CONNECT THE DOTS

Do You Know an IPoder?

C

hances are you know dozens, maybe even scores of iPoders – internetsavvy, digitally addicted people. They communicate and socialize relentlessly on the World Wide Web. The popular perception is that iPoders are young people, mostly adolescents and teenagers, who can’t get enough of selfies, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. According to the Pew Research Center, 64 percent of American adults owned smartphones in 2015 – up from 35 percent in 2011. For many smartphone owners, these devices are their most essential and sometimes only connection to the online world. To be sure, smartphone ownership is particularly popular with younger people. But smartphones are also popular with the well-educated and the well-heeled. IPoders are America’s fastest-emerging – and arguably most important – demographic. The rising wave of iPoders presents numerous opportunities for businesses, educational institutions, nonprofits and a myriad of other organizations that must communicate with the masses. Here are just a few reasons why iPoders matter so much: IPoders spend an inordinately high amount of time on their phones. They surf the internet, watching movies, sports or the news. For marketers in the public and private sectors, this is a goldmine. By my estimate, there are more than 115 million iPoders in this country alone. Think about it. If iPoders were a country, they would be one of the world’s 20 largest countries. Understanding how to communicate with iPoders is also important. It is important to understand how to write for this audience and what stimulates their response. For iPoders, socializing is more than just about hanging out at the mall or in their parents’ basements. Many iPoders hang out together in cyberspace. They talk in chat rooms, on Facebook and Twitter, and via Skype. This is a sea change in how members of a large segment of our population

It is an important point of consideration for educators looking for new ways to connect with students at K-12 and even college levels. This relatively new method of reaching people also poses a challenge. It means staying abreast of these new channels and evolving as they evolve. The rise of the iPoder generation means that we are all potential superstars. Although gatekeepers such as book publishers, film and TV studios, broadcast networks and newspapers remain relevant, the fact is that anyone who has access to the internet and the ability to create a message that resonates with millions of people can become a superstar overnight. In effect, this technology levels the playing field. It further democratizes us. It boosts the potential for greatness in each of us. If you harness the technology smartly, write well and speak well, you can reach great heights. It’s their world; we’re just living in it.

‌ he Marquette Mustangs played six tournaments during the regular season and T won them all – an incredible feat. Marquette opened its spring season by winning the Greg Bantle Memorial at Missouri Bluffs and followed with an impressive win in the ultratough Webster Cup at Crescent Farms, to name just a few. “This is the best run I’ve had at Marquette,” coach Eric Schweain said. “It comes down to great senior leadership and outstanding players. With the constant focus on the goals, our ceiling is pretty high. I believe this team can do it, but we will have to continue improving for that to happen. I really look forward to this stretch run. It’s been a magical run, but we’ve got some important golf left.” Weldon’s College Career Ends Parkway South graduate and Kansas State senior Kyle Weldon (pictured above) was recently named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, which consists of maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better, marking his third nomination in four years. He is the lone Wildcat to make this year’s list of 35 men’s golfers, which included 30 firstteamers and five second-team athletes. “I am very proud of Kyle,” said Wildcats head coach Grant Robbins. “He is a model student athlete that has excelled both on and off the course. It takes a great deal of discipline to be able to balance the demands of competing at the highest level of college golf while obtaining a degree in engineering. He is very deserving of this award.” Port at Washington University This season marks Ellen Port’s first as head coach of the Washington University Bears’ women’s golf team. Port is just the second women’s golf coach in program history, replacing Sean Curtis, who stepped down after leading the team since its inception in 2008. Port served on the staff of the John Burroughs School, teaching physical education for 30 years. During her tenure there, she coached a number of sports, including boys’ and girls’ golf, which collected a combined three state championships and three runner-up finishes under her leadership. “In 1986, I had the opportunity to work at the best college-prep school in the country in John Burroughs,” Port said. “Now I have an opportunity to work at the best university in the country – Washington University in St. Louis.” Rutledge Honored Michigan State men’s golfer Mitch Rutledge, a Whitfield School graduate, earned second-team All Big 10 honors, as voted on by Big 10 head coaches. Rutledge has been one of the most consistent golfers for the Spartans, finishing tied for ninth at the Big 10 Championship. The senior won the Inverness Intercollegiate on Oct. 22 for his sole individual-medalist honor this season. He has three top-five finishes this season and a stroke average of 72.63, which was the lowest on the team. Rutledge is the highest-ranked Spartan, ranked No. 121 by Golfweek magazine.

COMMUNICATION CONVERSATION

Readying Your Résumé

Y

ou did it! You earned that high school diploma or college degree you worked so hard for! Take a couple of weeks off to enjoy yourself, and then begin preparing that all-important résumé. The two most important things I have learned by working with clients are as follows. No. 1, each is unique. No. 2, résumés confuse, challenge and even scare people. This juxtaposition with new graduates often results in procrastination because No. 1 and No. 2 don’t naturally jibe well. How do I show my uniqueness in a rigid, one-page list? Remember it should only be one page if you’re in your 20s – unless you’re already composing music while playing Carnegie Hall or being recruited by Major League Baseball (both of which I have encountered with clients, who required different strategies). Let me set forth effective starter guidelines for new graduates. Let’s start with structure:  Present your name in a large font on the top of the page. Limit necessary contact information to one line below.

By Janis Murray Now, how do you grab the attention of an employer and keep it? A few tips on that subject follow:  Use active verbs, as opposed to titles, in bullet points that describe what you have and can do.  Don’t exaggerate. The potential employer will see through exaggeration.  Never lose a whole line of your résumé by leaving one word dangling alone. It shows wastefulness with potentially the prospective employer’s resources. Finally, realize not one résumé fits all potential situations, and standard formats from college career centers are boring. Law firms like old fonts, sports-management firms don’t, and we haven’t even addressed the topic of italics and boldface yet. Onward and upward. Congrats!

Résumés confuse, challenge and even scare people.  Leave 1-inch margins on each side of your résumé for potential employer/human resources notes.  Proceed with categories like education, experience, employment, information-technology proficiencies and community/interests. Please note that experience is different from employment. The former may include unpaid internships, while the latter involves only paid work. If you don’t have much of either, present education first and include any academic awards or experiences studying abroad, possibly preceded by a two-line objective sentence that expresses your interests and motivation.

Convertibles

Buyers Guide Story and photos by Ryan Scott

These high-performance convertibles are proof that life is more than perfect hair.

I

f I were a psychiatrist, my most prescribed medication would be to buy a convertible. No, the wind in your hair doesn’t make problems evaporate, but after a few miles, they start to fade away. After an hour it’s like they never existed. Driving a convertible isn’t about getting from point A to point B – it’s about finding that seldom-traveled, long route and those twisty, typically avoided back roads. That five-minute skip to grab a gallon of milk turns into a half-hour diversion. And nothing helps you decompress after a long day

in the office like a spirited open-air drive home. When I was growing up, my father was obsessed with convertibles, and so I’ve learned there are two givens with British sports cars: They’re fun to drive, and they don’t have roofs. Pops probably doesn’t even realize the effect his passion had on me, but the result is, I’ve owned a convertible in one form or another since I was 16. I’ll always be grateful for the early realization that driving can be something other than a means of transportation. Owning a convertible reworks the way you think

about driving; it becomes something you want to do as opposed to something you have to do. The only problem is deciding which one to buy. With the gracious help of our wonderful St. Louis auto dealers, I was given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the latest releases. It was a burden, but somehow I powered through the assignment. From these efforts, I discovered the best of the best at three price points. Without further ado, here are some of the finest expressions of motoring as an art form.

Price Point: $30,000 Mazda MX-5 Miata In 1990, the automotive intelligentsia alleged that the sports car was dead. It was also the year I earned my driver’s license, and even more importantly, the year Mazda introduced the Miata. Just like that, little-guy Mazda revitalized the true sports car and became the high bar other manufacturers would chase for decades. The Brits invested the blueprint of a light and nimble two-seat car that connects the driver with the road – and has no roof – but it was the Japanese who reintroduced it to a new generation. Mazda has stayed true to that winning formula; proof of its success is its one millionth MX-5 (Miata), which recently rolled off the Hiroshima production line. The fourth-generation MX-5 was met with anxious anticipation and then heaped with praise from the motoring press. Topping its list of laurels was taking home the 2016 World Car of the Year award. Winning the WCOTY award is no small feat; it’s tantamount to the whole of the world’s automotive press proclaiming yours as the best car produced anywhere in the known universe for that model year. After I had some seat time, I’ll even take it one step further: The 2016 MX-5 is one of the 10 best cars ever produced. (Insert long, awkward pause.) Let me explain. Every car made is designed with a purpose, a reason for existence. Some are made to haul loads of kids around town, some are made for restful commutes to the office, and a hallowed few are meant to paint an ear-to-ear smile across the face of whoever is fortunate enough to be behind the wheel. The MX-5 is one of those cars, and in that pursuit, it succeeds wholly. What the MX-5 accomplishes is to blur the lines of where the car ends and the driver begins. In the MX-5’s singular purpose for existence, it delivers perfection. When a car gives you that feeling, you don’t want it to end. Exploring the myriad twisty roads of Jefferson County has always been a source of joy, and in my scant few days with the MX-5, I discovered more new favorites than I had in the year prior. There was never the thought of turning back, just pressing onward to discover new sensations. The main concern potential buyers have is that it’s too small. My 6-foot2-inch, 200-pound frame fit, but just. Although I am certainly in the 95th

56

May 27, 2016 | LadueNews.com

percentile of body size Mazda engineers envisioned, I’d have no reservations about owning one. Other concerns exist, like lack of power. But turning zero-to-60 times of 5.5 seconds isn’t exactly slow – in fact, that would have been supercar numbers in the late ’90s. But I do grudgingly have to admit there’s no hidden back row of seating or space in the trunk for your new IKEA multitiered closet-shelving system, just two low-slung seats and enough trunk space for $100 of groceries. If $30,000 is your ceiling, the MX-5 is the beginning and end of the list to consider. Other options do exist, like the Mini Cooper, but its failure to inspire owners and new buyers has led to continuous grumblings of future discontinuance. The Volkswagen Beetle Convertible… Well, it would be heresy to mention it in the same breath. Although one can get into a Ford Mustang convertible for near $30,000, it falls short due to a comparative lack of refinement and composure. Don’t make excuses for why the MX-5 won’t fit your life; find reasons why it can. If you’re still not convinced, just drive one, and let it speak to you. POrSche BOXSter

POrsChe st. lOuis 9710 Manchester road, st. louis 314-312-1900 porsche-stlouis.com

The name Rolex ensures meticulous craftsmanship and a timepiece that will appreciate in value. Dolce & Gabbana is a guarantee of high style for a sharp-dressed man. And a Porsche badge is a dead giveaway of impeccable balance and driving excitement. Many wouldn’t realize, however, that you can get into a Porsche convertible for just a smidge more than our $50,000 entry. The Boxster is showered year in and year out with praise from the automotive press and, as such, has earned a spot on our list. Although the layouts are executed worlds apart, you could think of the Boxster as a bigger, more refined MX-5. On paper, you’d expect a front-engine, four-cylinder car to be nothing like a mid-engine straight-six, but on the road, they feel more alike than different. The Boxster shares the same willingness to rotate without drama and gives the driver more ultimate grip. The power bands of the two engines are similar, as well, with the Boxster having more grunt and snarl as the revs rise. To boil it down, if you love driving the MX-5, you’ll be enamored with the Boxster just the same. Porsche managed to give us more of all the things we want behind the wheel, with none of the downsides that often come from “more.” Inside the car is a different story – the Porsche feels copious and refined. There’s ample room for both driver and passenger, and the quality of materials used is world-class. Although in reality it’s still a small car, the Boxster certainly doesn’t feel so once you’re seated. And speaking of the seats, they’re fantastic: supportive in all the right ways, supple in feel and offering a range of adjustability. The unconventionally high-center tunnel and shifter position felt odd at first, but I soon realized these make it more ergonomic and allow for easier manipulation of the magnificent six-speed manual transmission. The Boxster as a package is another car that you just don’t want to leave. You could call it the Goldilocks of sports cars: just the right amount of power, just right handling and grip, inspirational exhaust note, ideal ergonomics and sexy, to boot. I pondered long and hard for downsides to this car, and here’s the best I could do. The cup holders are a joke, almost insulting to label them as such, as the only cup that could fit would be a toddler’s sippy. Red Bull cans would even be a tight squeeze – and driving the Boxster is energizing enough on its own.

BMw M235i New to the market in 2014, the BMW 2-series is an evolution and replacement for the 1-series, continuing the idea that less is more. As 3-series and 5-series, Bimmers have grown in scale and complexity; the 1- and now 2-series promise a bit of a return to the roots. There’s still an array of active doohickeys and gadgets, but they don’t dominate the driving experience. Instead, the M235i is an olive branch to the stubborn holders-on of more pure E36 and E46 M-cars of the past. Keen observers will note the M in the car’s name – so does that make it an M-car, you might be wondering? Yes and no. BMW adds many M bits to make it an M235i but says it falls a measure short of being an all-out M-car. Among those go-fast pieces are 13.4-inch ventilated brake rotors, a grippier suspension and tires, and the excellent 320-horsepower, N55 turbocharged straight-six engine. Toss it into corners, and this car grabs with confidence; step on the throttle post-apex, and it launches forward with purpose. Like those M-cars of yore, it does so with constant communication between driver and road. As a previous owner of an E36 M3 convertible, I can say this car delivers the same delight but with all the advances you want in the newer and more modern car. Inside it’s pure BMW, with an unmistakable and effective layout and its ergonomics of the past decade. And there’s space, as well, though the vertically endowed will certainly eat into back-seat real estate – but the back seat is still usable. It might not be a cozy four-passenger car, but three shouldn’t be an inconvenience. Throughout the interior, there’s a substantial feel to the textures and buttons. BMW understands the need for a mix of analog dials for things you want like volume and temperature, paired with a digital interface for adjustments that are accessed less frequently. The M235i might not be the belle of the ball, but it’s unmistakably BMW. It’s a compelling entry into the market, fusing new with old in all the ways drivers desire. For those in need of a back seat without compromise of driving pleasure, it’s our choice.

One tO watch: after the recent drive and affinity for the 2016 camaro SS, we’re anticipating the arrival of its convertible variant with bated breath. assuming GM can translate the same driving dynamics to the convertible, it will be a serious player in the segment.

ere’s where things get really interesting – $100,000 is serious coin, and manufacturers know that buyers in this segment can often swing a weekend toy and a responsible weekday commute; thus, more manufacturers want to play in this market. Because of the far more numerous options available, readers will note the absence of some players. One specifically, the Porsche 911, is undergoing a rather revolutionary change in 2017 from normally aspirated to a force-fed power plant and, thus, deserves future in-depth scrutiny.

Jaguar F-Type

Plaza Jaguar 11654 olive Blvd., creve coeur 314-919-8273 plazajaguarstlouis.com

If I had to choose one word to describe the F-Type, it would be juvenile. This car is positively childish, but in good ways that make you remember what it was like to be a kid. Tap the center tunnel button, and the exhaust goes from “Let me just sneak past” to “Let’s see if we can give pedestrians mild coronaries.” It spits. It snarls. Goose the throttle, and office windows rattle; let off, and it sounds like a clowder of black cats dropped into a 55-gallon drum. If I were writing a feature on the F-Type and had 1,500 words at my disposal, I could use 1,400 of them just talking about the exhaust note. Whoever in the Jaguar engineering department was responsible, kudos to you, fine sir or madam. But there is more to the car than just tailpipes. Drivers are welcomed with a nearperfect balance of raucous power delivery and agility. With the new AWD system, this cat maintains its tail-happy character but without the terror. Yes, it can still be pushed into sphincter-clinching sideways moments, but it takes a more concerted effort. The takeaway impression was that the F-Type is a seriously capable, seriously precise and seriously fast machine. Of all the cars on our list, this is the one I’d most like to take to the track. Oh, and this was with the “only” 340-horsepower supercharged V6. You can also get it with a 550-horsepower supercharged V8 – that one scared me a bit, but I’ll be back at a later date. Seating position in the F-Type is more reminiscent of an F-22, with support in every direction and an obvious focus on the driver. Jaguar has become known for funky layouts and interface, and although there’s a bit of that here, for the most part the infotainment system and control layout make sense with a shallow learning curve. The inner child at Jaguar is apparent in the interior, though, with motorized center-console vents that seemingly raise and lower whenever they feel like it. Seemingly pointless at first, upon introspection, it became clear why it has a motorized pop-up vent cluster: because our internal 12-year-old will think it’s cool.

ChevroleT CorveTTe

Elco chEvrolEt 15110 manchester road, Ballwin 636-227-5333 elcochevrolet.com

The Corvette is a bit of a ’tweener, as it doesn’t quite make the $50,000 bracket but falls well short of the $100,000 range. Our loaded-up 3LT Z51 stickers for $77,000 and change. Buyers can even get into the bonkers 650-horsepower Z06 convertible for well under $100,000, but much like the bonkers version of the F-Type, I decided discretion was the better part of valor. We made do with our mere 460-horsepower 6.2L V8 – keyed tongue-in-cheek, of course, because believe me, it’s a potent package. Much like the new Camaro SS, this Corvette is a triumph of engineering. There’s power on tap at any rpm and in any gear. And try as I might, I never encountered a situation where I wanted for more chassis rigidity. Thanks to the heads-up display and performance meter, I regularly found myself exceeding 1 G of lateral acceleration. And I was even more impressed at how effortlessly it happened. This is a car that anyone can hustle, as speed is delivered in such a manageable way. But don’t take that to mean it’s not exhilarating. Although not equal to the F-Type in that regard, the ’Vette still thrills. Chevrolet also upped the fit and finish inside, and it’s much appreciated. It’s not at the level of the next car on our list, but the new ’Vette no longer disappoints in its layout. The seats, however, aren’t as gratifying as they could be. And if there’s one complaint, it’s the eight-speed automatic transmission. Many manufacturers use the same ZF sourced cog, and some, including BMW, have managed to tune it for much greater satisfaction. In the Corvette, there’s just enough lag, even in track mode, that you find yourself bouncing off the fuel cut. Because of that, I’d likely opt for the manual gearbox on my build sheet. Since the introduction of the C7 generation Corvette in 2014, it has been met with much acclaim, and for good reason. This is an absolutely fantastic and easily approachable performance car. It does whatever you want without complaint and saves the buyer 10s of thousands over its competitors.

BMW 650i A bit of a departure from the rest of the list, the big Bimmer is deserving in its own way. The 6-series is a Grand Tourer, not a lean, mean, chiseled affair. Experience has taught me that weight is the enemy of fun behind the wheel, and the 650i packs a lot of it around. At more than 4,500 pounds, there are two Miatas’ worth of gravitational pull under that sheet metal. So when it was suggested I drive one, my first thought was, “Nah, not my style.” Now I’m glad I did. Like an offensive lineman, the 650i manages its weight extremely well. With a 445-horesepower twin turbo V8, you get to 60 in a scant 4.4 seconds. And the real surprise was its agility – the expected front-end plow on turn-in is nonexistent. Instead, I’m greeted with a car that feels deft and responds as instructed. Eating up 20 mph switchbacks isn’t as gratifying as in the MX-5, but close enough that you won’t feel shortchanged. Believe it or not, this behemoth is also a Jekyll-andHyde, smile-inducing performance machine. As good as it is to drive, it’s magnificent to live within. The interior of the 650i is fabulous, rich and luxurious, with all the modern touches any buyer could desire. Let your fingers wander, and the quality of materials is obvious. I found myself caressing the iDrive controller often for its sumptuous feel. Driving at highway speeds with the brilliantly engineered top up, there’s no trace of added road noise. Back seats are equally luxurious and, although not exactly spacious, can transport adults. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise on our list, the BMW 650i is the only choice for a performance and luxury open-air experience.

Dinner ...

N

ow, I love barbecue, meatloaf and macand-cheese as much as the next guy, but when it comes to comfort food, one of my all-time favorites has to be sushi. Something about seeing a perfectly crafted roll or a single piece of nigiri settles my soul. We’re lucky to have some great sushi purveyors here in the St. Louis area, with one of the newest being The Sushi Station in Webster Groves. We stopped by recently and found it’s a great place for a quick foodie fix, perhaps before catching a performance of La bohème at Opera Theatre of St. Louis. The Sushi Station’s exterior is deceiving. The restaurant looks smallish on the outside, but actually

boasts plenty of room. I highly recommend taking a seat at the sushi bar and watching its menu offerings being created. From the extensive starters list, we decided on an order of Rangoon ($5), four crispy wontons stuffed with a creamy crab filling. Then we headed to the soup and salad choices, where we picked two of our favorites, the goma wakame, or seaweed salad, ($6) and the miso soup ($2). Our appetites sufficiently primed, we were ready for the main event. The Sushi Station has a voluminous selection of nigiri and maki sushi, making narrowing the choices a challenge. Ultimately, we came to a consensus and opted for a piece of tamago, or sweet

By Matt Sorrell egg, ($2) and the masago, or smelt roe, ($3) from the nigiri selections. The sushi rolls, meanwhile, are split between “regular” and “special.” In the interest of variety, from the regular list we chose the yellowtail roll ($6), and from the special selections, the Firecracker ($12) and eel avocado ($8) rolls. As I mentioned before, half of the sushi experience is taking in the aesthetics of the food, and our sushi choices were definitely visually pleasing, like the way the rice supported the saffron slice of egg and tiny spheres of roe. The colors delicately played off one another – from the dark seafloor green of the nori, to the lighter spring green of the avocado, to the pale rose of the tuna. At the other end of the spectrum was the

Firecracker roll, with its topping of crunchy potato flakes and drizzle of Sriracha, a riot of color, orange and red against the pure white of the rice. Of course, the other half of the sushi equation is the taste, which all of our selections delivered – and then some. The rice, the benchmark of quality sushi, struck just the right balance, not too sticky but holding together just so. Those who aren’t in a sushi mood can enjoy plenty of other specialties here, like chicken teriyaki and yakisoba. We didn’t have room on this visit, but The Sushi Station also offers one of my favorite desserts – green-tea ice cream. Next time for sure! In a hurry? No worries – an abundance of public parking in the neighborhood makes it easy to drop by The Sushi Station for a bite. The Sushi Station, 29 N. ‌Story:  Four starving artists share a tiny apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the mid-19th century. The quartet of young men – Rodolfo the poet, Marcello the painter, Colline the philosopher and Schaunard the musician – prepare to enjoy Christmas Eve dinner courtesy of Schaunard’s recent work for a wealthy Parisian. Schaunard, though, suggests they save the food and wine for another day and go instead to Café Momus as his guests. Staying behind momentarily, Rodolfo hears a young woman at the door. She says her name is Mimi, a seamstress who lives in the same apartment building and who needs her candle re-lit. She and Rodolfo quickly strike up a romance and journey together to the café, where they join the others, although Mimi appears to be ill. There, a singer named Musetta appears with her aging paramour, Alcindoro. She sees her ex-lover, Marcello, and immediately figures out a way to dump Alcindoro and rekindle her affair with the painter, who still loves her as well. As cold weather lasts into early spring, Mimi’s cough worsens. She has separated from Rodolfo, as has Musetta from Marcello. When Musetta sees the gravely ill Mimi on the street, she brings her to the quartet’s apartment for Mimi to briefly reunite with Rodolfo before she succumbs to consumption. Highlights:  Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) opened its 41st season in grand style with this invigorating and appealing rendition of La bohème, Giacomo Puccini’s perennially popular opera. Wellsung performances by Hae Ji Chang as Mimi, Andrew Haji as Rodolfo, Lauren Michelle as Musetta and Anthony Clark Evans as Marcello contributed greatly to that grand opening. Other Info:  This fifth production of La bohème at OTSL, where it debuted in 1978, is a light and breezy affair thanks to stage director Ron Daniels, who brings out the humor in the libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica through an English translation by Richard Pearlman and Francis Rizzo. The libretto in turn was based on a novel by Henri Murger titled Scènes de la vie de bohème. Puccini’s acclaimed opera debuted in Turin, Italy, in 1896 and has enjoyed great favor with audiences pretty much since then. His music is airy and melodious, and

By Mark Bretz

the libretto is a straightforward paean to romantic love, wasting little time having its main characters fall for each other after the briefest of introductions. All four of the main performers are making their OTSL debut in this, and each does justice to the work. Chang displays a soft but pleasing soprano that matches the diminutive Mimi’s stature, while Michelle’s soprano is more robust and a good fit for the fiery Musetta’s saucy arias and flirtatious ways. Josh Wheeker, Eric Ferring, Robert Mellon and Samuel Weiser play well in minor roles that add flair and enliven the goings-on in the café and the streets filled with vendors, shoppers, children and assorted other townspeople. This latest version of La bohème is a handsome collaboration of everyone involved and a smart selection to start the new season. It fittingly matched the beautiful weather that welcomed patrons to the OTSL tent before and after the opening-night performance.

As the reader perhaps already knows, Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are the same grape, depending on the country of origin. Italy and other parts of Europe know this gray-red grape as Pinot Grigio, the place of origin from which it gained worldwide popularity. The Alsace region of France, Oregon and Washington here, Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world, meanwhile, know it as Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris, a versatile wine at this time of year, works well on the patio and for entertaining, and pairs nicely with the lighter foods of late spring and summer. Visit ninehatswines.com for more information. Food Pairings: Goat cheese or mild cheeses, chicken roasted or sautéed, whitefish baked or poached, scallops, shellfish, roasted pork and pasta with seafood all pair well with this vintage.

Bridging Ranked in the top 10 bRidge clubs in noRth ameRica, the st. louis bRidge centeR is kept in check – and in deck – by its pResident, ann lemp.

S

he loves playing bridge, gardening, creating needlepoint and reading on her deck. A retired attorney, this doting grandmother has spent countless hours volunteering for her children’s schools and for a shelter for abused women and their children. Meet Ann Lemp, president of the St. Louis Bridge Center (SLBC). Lemp, who was voted president of the board in October 2015, views her duties as carrying on the vision of its founders “to make sure we provide a supportive, friendly environment where people can play and learn duplicate bridge.” She says she didn’t seek the presidency. “My goal was and is to keep the game of bridge growing and to help the bridge center stay on the course envisioned by founders Bill and Sally Canfield and Keith and Karen Graves,” she adds. “The fact that Bill has stayed on the board, that the board members are talented and dedicated to our mission, that Linda Currier handles the dayto-day affairs and that we have a talented and well-respected group of game directors is a crucial part of our success.” Before becoming president, Lemp says she was “playing as much bridge as possible” and was then asked to form an advisory group to tackle board projects. She was later asked to join the board, which led to her leadership position. She calls bridge “an amazing game that even the best players in St. Louis, most of whom play at our club, will never completely master.” Dedicated to a healthy lifestyle, she believes that “playing duplicate bridge is not only fun but also good for your health. Duplicate is an exercise for the mind; it encourages socialization and

requires focus. It is a time where players can put aside their health concerns and anxieties.” Lemp’s earliest memories of bridge are those of her parents playing social bridge while she ran around the table. “I began playing on a small scale in high school and college but didn’t begin playing bridge on a regular basis until 2003,” she says, adding that on a lark, “one of the women and I went to play in a novice game at a regional competition in 2011. We came in first. I was hooked.” She began playing more often three years ago, when Keith Graves and Bill Canfield opened the 7,200-square-foot, not-for-profit SLBC at 8616 Olive Blvd., and she now plays duplicate bridge three to four times a week. She calls SLBC “the premier place to play duplicate in St. Louis. It has been responsible for the resurgence of bridge playing in our area. Bridge is complex; it forces you to think and to be mindful. At the same time, it is a social activity that has created and renewed friendships and turned our bridge center into a community.” Last year SLBC ranked 10th out of the top 50 clubs in North America for the numbers of tables played. “Education is an important part of our SLBC mission,” Lemp says. “We have lessons for beginners, novices and intermediate players. Whatever your skill level, we have classes and games for you. We are a place where people come to use their minds, be social and learn. When people are playing bridge, you can feel their energies; there is a lot of brainpower being used.” Lemp is excited that the SLBC has again formed a team (in conjunction with the American Contract Bridge League and the Alzheimer’s Association) to raise funds and awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. The annual fundraising event, The Longest Day, will be held June 20, and Lemp is hopeful that the SLBC team will play “all day long,” as the name implies. The SLBC raised more than $35,000 for the event last year, placing third in the country among participating league clubs. Alzheimer’s disease, which causes progressive memory loss and intellectual deficits, affects an estimated 110,000 Missourians. Or you might find her moving mulch and rocks in her Webster Groves garden. Married for almost 34 years to Robert Keefe (whom she met in law school), Lemp and her husband have three children. Lemp says she loves to babysit for granddaughter Cecilia, and will change her plans to care for her “in a heartbeat.” A graduate of John Burroughs School and Vermont’s Middlebury College, she earned her Doctor of Law in 1979 from Saint Louis University Law School, where she later taught as an adjunct professor. She worked as a trial attorney for almost seven years, focusing primarily on criminal defense and later handling plaintiff’spersonal-injury, medical-malpractice and domestic-relations law. Lemp also has given back to John Burroughs School, both as an alumna of the class of 1971 and as a Burroughs parent. In 2008,

the school bestowed on her its Distinguished Service Award. Her SLBC position isn’t the first such stint for Lemp, who previously served on the boards of Forsyth School and John Burroughs School, as well as the board of St. Martha’s Hall, a shelter for abused women and their children, for three years and as its vice president in 1997. “We have two confidential locations where we shelter women and their children and help them start new lives,” she says with pride. Although caring for others is the name of her game, duplicate bridge rules when the card table comes out. Lemp’s love for bridge has translated into her long-term goal: to make St. Louis a mecca for bridge players, “just as it has become in recent years for the game of chess.” St. Louis Bridge Center, 8616 Olive Blvd., 314-569-1430, stlouisbridge.org
