S ure, the holiday season can be magical, and fall has its own kind of wonder. But the end of May brings a special sort of happiness that can’t be beat. It’s the time of school-year endings, garden plantings, alfresco dining and sunshine-basking. (And incidentally, my wedding anniversary. Shout out to my husband – you rock, pal!) It’s the time to crank the radio, roll the windows down and put play before work. If you are game, start at Imagination Toys, one of the metro area’s most popular toy shops, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Read the backstory on this local gem in the feature by LN contributor Alecia Humphreys, starting on Page 18. Speaking of games (of the more professional kind), flip to Page 63 for an interview by LN staff writer Amanda Dahl with world chess champion Levon Aronian and his recent decision to make St. Louis his home base. And for wardrobe inspiration for all of that end-ofMay fun, starting on Page 32, check out LN fashion contributor Katie Yeadon’s fun, fresh picks for pieces you can shop locally that tap into the biggest trend of the moment: patterned prints that wow. However you choose to enjoy my favorite mini-season, be sure to take Ladue News with you – in print, online or on social media – for recommendations that will help you elevate every metro area adventure.

n April 6, Ladue School District families voted to pass a $126 million bond referendum – referred to as Proposition L on the city’s ballot – with a sweeping 74.9 percent majority, thereby giving those in charge of Prop L the green light for some highly anticipated updates. “I can remember walking into Spoede [Elementary School] and looking at the roof through a window, and I remember seeing blue tarp covering the HVAC systems because they were leaking so badly,” explains Jim Wipke, the district’s superintendent. “I thought, ‘OK, there’s some work to be done on this building.’” Renovations will commence at the end of the school year, with the goal of renovating the district’s middle and four elementary schools. However, passing the proposition was just one step along a long path to completion. “My role is overseeing business and finance procedures for those bond issuances … ,” says the district’s assistant superintendent of business and finance, Jason Buckner. “We’re doing construction, and we have to sell the bonds, which is something I’m currently working on with the municipal advisors and attorney. This is the most extensive renovation we’ve seen, and it’s been fun in my position to see that occur over time.” As part of the renovation, Spoede Elementary, Old Bonhomme Elementary, Reed Elementary, Conway Elementary and Ladue Middle School will expand their classroom square footages, update the buildings to meet Americans with Disabilities Act and Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines, and make one renovation that particularly excites Wipke: a library with STEM spaces and increased opportunities for student collaboration. Post-pandemic, the possibility of implementing community education initiatives in these updated spaces is being explored. “We’ll have more space, so it’s easier to have small-group, differentiated instruction, easier to get kids some additional support or enrichment,” Wipke says. “When you feel better and you’re going into a building that looks and feels new, it puts you in a different mindset – ready for learning.” Before these “future-ready schools” are ready for use, however, students must attend school as renovations are carried out, with a phasing plan in place to transition students through the process with minimal disruption. But Wipke is confident the effort will be worth the wait. “Our facilities need to match our teaching, and we’ve got amazing teachers,” Wipke says. “No matter what age our kids are, I want them to be in the best facilities. In the end, I think it’ll all be worth it.”

HEALTH NOTES
Health Equity at Home By Connie Mitchell
T
he U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration defines health equity as “the absence of disparities or avoidable differences among socioeconomic and demographic groups or geographical areas in health status and health outcomes such as disease, disability or mortality.” In other words, it’s the principle that health care should be equally available and accessible regardless of race, age, gender, locality or economic class. Creating health equity among these disparate groups is a complex proposition, ranging from how medical students learn about differences between ethnic and socioeconomic patient populations to addressing payment models that are barriers to medical care. “The health care system is just yet another example of how racism operates, specifically in this country, but even generally,” says Keon Gilbert, co-founder of the Institute for Healing Justice and Equity at Saint Louis University. “You could look at any system, any set of institutions, and see the same patterns and also link them to the broader social conditions or determinants that structure in opportunity for people to access not only health care but also education, etc.” He adds that once people gain access, they often face challenges in actually receiving and navigating services. Striving to help the metro area attain a higher level of health equity, both SSM Health and Mercy joined a Catholic Health Association of the United States initiative. Participating health systems pledge to work on “examining and changing hiring, promotion and retention practices to ensure diversity and inclusion; forming stronger partnerships with communities of color to improve health outcomes; and leveraging their united and powerful voice to

advocate for policy changes that address the root causes of racism and social injustice,” according to the CHA. Working toward achieving these goals, Mercy established a Physician Diversity Advancement Council, focused on “advancing culturally competent care and equity for all Mercy patients,” says Ursula Wright, vice president of clinical care redesign and optimization. “In addition, this council focuses on developing and attracting minority providers, with recognition that this contributes to cultural competency and equity in the care we deliver.” Beyond the hospital walls, “listening and responding to the needs of the community, with particular attention to persons who are economically poor or underserved, is part of our faith-based heritage,” explains Takisha Lovelace, executive director of Mercy’s community health operations. Mercy community health workers identify patients with unstable social circumstances and redirect them to a primary care provider, help locate community and financial assistance, and assist with social needs, such as utility assistance and food resources, she says. These types of initiatives are a good start, but
there is much to do in order to bring health equity to the region, Gilbert adds. “We know where the pockets and concentrations in our communities are where there are high rates of chronic diseases and other illnesses,” he says. “Our hospitals and health care systems, as well as other institutions, have to think about the investment into those communities to actually change and reverse the trends that we see and the social conditions where people are living and working.” It’s a proposition Mercy was already working on, says Danielle McPherson, director of managed care contracting and payor relations. “The CHA initiative was already in line with Mercy’s core values,” she says. “Prior to the pledge, Mercy was committed to the work and will continue to commit to the work – because it’s the right thing to do.”

MOVERS & SHAKERS
E
Ellen Moceri By Alice Handelman
llen Moceri has spent the past 55 years as a transformational leader in independent day schools and as an advocate for educational programs to fight systemic racism and encourage social equality. Her drive to educate the future leaders of tomorrow is evident in the roles she has served as teacher, head of school, senior consultant, board member and community volunteer. Moceri earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. Following a brief stint as an assistant buyer at the St. Louis-headquartered retailer Stix, Baer and Fuller, she answered an ad for a teaching position at Creve Coeur’s Whitfield School. After working there for about a year, she applied to Ladue’s John Burroughs School and was offered a position there teaching history. For 25 years, she remained at Burroughs, where she served as the chair of the history department, director of studies and college counselor. In 1993, she went on a “game-changing sabbatical” to New York’s Columbia University, where she took a course called “Private Schools Have a Public Purpose.” When she returned to Burroughs, she brought with her a newfound purpose and determination to help the school “use its resources to build bridges with inner-city St. Louis and the underserved population.” She launched a summer program, incorporating the “Aim High” model developed by one of her former pupils, where inner-city elementary students were invited to a sixweek summer program of “cultural and academic enrichment.” “Our program’s goal is to guide the students through their middle school experience and help them graduate from high school and go on to college,” she says. The Burroughs program continues to this day, serving roughly 300 students each year. Sought after for her tenacity and strategic skills, she left Burroughs for top administration positions at the American School of The Hague in the Netherlands, Horace Mann in New York, Christ Church Episcopal School in South Carolina and the American School of Mexico City, and in 2001, she joined Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, Florida, as the head of school. “The mission of Ransom Everglades is to train a leadership class to give more to their communities,” she says. The school was honored with the Klingenstein Award for its role in helping the underserved, and Moceri was credited with transforming Ransom into a “national powerhouse.” She helped grow the school’s Breakthrough program, which now serves about 2,000 students in neighboring Miami. The mayor recognized her contributions not just to the school but to the greater Miami community, as well. Since retiring to St. Louis in 2014 with her husband of 56 years, Larry, Moceri has served on the board of three charter schools and one magnet school, all of which serve predominantly Black students. “At the Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, we have helped our students attain internships in various medical and technology positions,” she says of that St. Louis magnet high school. “I decided, as a retired person, that I would use whatever talents I had for educational leadership to help the Black students of St. Louis get the education they need to be gainfully employed. As Abraham Lincoln said, ‘Everyone should have the right to rise.’ And the best way for everyone to have the right to rise is for everyone to have an equal opportunity for education.”

sk any local family: Imagination Toys is the perfect place for parents to purchase terrific toys in the metro area. The Ladue store has been creating that magic now for 35 years – and counting. “It feels amazing to celebrate 35 years,” owner Polly Lett says. “Imagination Toys is a St. Louis institution, bringing joy to generations of children and convenience to countless parents and grandparents since 1985.” Imagination Toys, located at 9737 Clayton Road within the Granaway Shops in Ladue, was purchased by Lett in January 2012. “Ladue almost lost Imagination Toys,” Lett says. “The founders decided
One of the metro area’s most popular toy shops reflects on 35 years of connecting families through play. to retire at the end of the 2011 holiday season. Upon learning of the going-out-ofbusiness sale, I expressed my disappointment to my husband and told him the store was a tradition in St. Louis and needed to continue. As someone who buys companies for a living, he asked me what the owners intended to do with the store. I went back in, and the rest, as they say, is history. We continued the tradition.” Although Lett remodeled the 4,000-square-foot storefront and updated its assortment of items, she kept the iconic Mary Engelbreit-designed logo and says the same great customer service similarly had to stay. “I have a son who is 32, and when he was a child, we would come here all the time,” Lett says. “I also have twins who are 21, and I continued that tradition of going to Imagination Toys. I still love the way that you walk in, and they greet you at the front door and ask, ‘What can we help you with?’” Lett’s team of knowledgeable toy experts offers not only personal service and consultation while you shop – potentially even taking time to demonstrate a toy – but also complimentary gift-wrapping. “We truly try to enhance each family’s shopping experience as they search for the perfect new addition to playtime,” Lett says. Inventory ranges from classic toys, such as puppets and rocking horses, to award-winning books, games and puzzles, as well as dolls and baby items, and even outdoor sporting items such as scooters and EzyRollers. “We continuously add new toys that our customers will enjoy,” Lett says. “Imagination Toys is special because of what we have in the store. We don’t carry the same kind of toys as the big-box stores. We are a specialty toy store offering the highest-quality educational, developmental and creative toys that
nurture the imagination and encourage children and adults to think and have fun.” Toys that spark active minds and curiosities are this shop’s specialty. “We carry an amazing selection of Legos and other construction items,” Lett says. “We offer arts and crafts and creative play items, as well as science and nature items.” So whether your children are aspiring astronauts, dinosaur devotees or future gardeners, Imagination Toys has what they need to ignite their passion. “We are always looking to bring in new and exciting things,” Lett says. “I go to various shows. For example, I am going to Dallas in June, where I will meet with a number of the reps I work with to buy toys, and we will go through the showrooms and will be planning for the holiday to make it the best ever, like we do every year.” And being the best is something Lett certainly strives for with her store. “We are perennial winners of the Ladue News Platinum List,” Lett says. “We aspire to remain the toy store of choice in the St. Louis metropolitan area. There aren’t too many specialty toy stores left in the area. As the current steward of Imagination Toys, I hope to pass the business on at some point so that the tradition will continue for many generations.” Imagination Toys, 9737 Clayton Road, St. Louis, 314-993-6288, imagination-toys.com

Health BEAT FAST FACTS • The year 2020 saw a 13 percent increase in heavy alcohol use and a 41 percent increase in alcohol use in women. • The No. 1 reason for opioid use relapse is the fear of withdrawal symptoms, including insomnia, anxiety, joint pain and nausea. • The NSS-2 Bridge is the first FDA-approved neural stimulation device and can reduce the pain of opioid withdrawal in less than 30 minutes. • INSynergy offers safe, insurance-covered genetic testing to learn if patients are predisposed to addiction, as well as what treatments may work best.
INSynergy Personalized Addiction Care By Maggie Peters
T
he coronaviral pandemic may be ebbing, but in its wake many people who turned to alcohol and drug use in the last year will be looking for help with addiction. INSynergy is a local personalized addiction care service that has the evidence-based programs and treatments that will assist in safe and effective recovery. Psychiatrist and INSynergy founder Arturo Taca Jr., MD, saw the dire need for up-to-date addiction therapies in St. Louis and got involved with the American Society of Addiction Medicine, later becoming board-certified in addiction medicine and serving as the President of the Midwest Chapter. Taca started his addiction practice in 2006 and currently, INSynergy offers three different treatment programs. “Our 10-day detox program is medically supervised and offered to people going through alcohol or opioid withdrawal,” Taca describes. “We offer medications and FDA cleared device technology that makes withdrawal much more comfortable.” Detox can be done at the patient’s home, which was especially useful at the height of COVID-19’s impact. INSynergy’s second program is a comprehensive experience that lasts three months and includes access to psychiatrists, psychologists, addiction counselors, registered nurses and social workers. This program is tailored around the client’s schedule avoiding disruptions in professional or academic life, and treatments are confidential while at the same time very practical and effective. During the three months of programming, INSynergy addresses the major components that originally made the person want to use. “It’s a very personalized type of experience,” Taca says. “After the three months, we oftentimes discover important medical, psychiatric, and sometimes genetic insights that have contributed to the strong desire to drink or use substances. It’s the evidence-based insights that allows for a more robust response to our unique interventions.” The last service is done in partnership with other clinics in the area. As the preferred clinic for Vivitrol, INSynergy offers this monthly, anti-craving, injection for other treatment programs. “It can really enhance their experience in other programs because of Vivitrol’s ability to reduce cravings and focus their energy in counseling or therapy,” Taca says. INSynergy is constantly moving forward, looking at getting new treatments to as many people as possible, including the NSS-2 Bridge, an FDA-cleared device that combats opioid withdrawal symptoms. “It’s safe and effective and supported by the National Institute of Drug Abuse as an accepted approach to managing opioid withdrawal symptoms,” Taca explains. “There’s a lot of work to be done as, [but] we’re very hopeful that this technology will be more recognized within the addiction treatment community and eventually reimbursed by insurance companies.” With the last 12 months seeing the rise in an opioid epidemic that never truly went away, INSynergy offers local, practical, and effective treatment that helps get every patient back on his or her feet. 11477 Olde Cabin Road, Suite 210, Creve Coeur, 314-649-7867, insynergystl.com

GROOMING & GLAMOUR
GETTING REAL By Amanda Dahl | Photos courtesy of Get Mr.
A
s Skin Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close and as researchers continue to prove that men are at high risk, it’s important to remember to ensure your skin stays protected and healthy all year long. Thanks to Get Mr., a new local grooming brand, that’s now easier to do than brushing your teeth. Meet The Daily, a research-based, all-in-one product that innovates your routine by combining the benefits of moisturizer, aftershave and sunscreen in one easy-to-use package. “No need to spend on expensive moisturizers, creams or lotions,” promises co-founder Elianna Goldstein. “A lot of what we do is focused on making this as easy as possible. Bottles can be delivered every month or however often you want.” The best part? Get Mr. products are designed around what is proven to work for men. The brainchild of Goldstein is backed by the expertise of her co-founder and mother, Dr. Beth Goldstein, a dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon with three decades of experience. “Day in and day out, [my mother would] hear from her male patients that they hated the products they would use,” Goldstein says. “They’d be in for severe surgery or treatment, and even
28 May 28, 2021 | LadueNews.com
then, there wasn’t a product they enjoyed. That was interesting to look at: What are men using every day? What are my brothers using every day?” The Goldsteins understand that cancer can impact anyone, including Elianna Goldstein’s father, a physician, who was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2018. Today, he is both a survivor and a driving force for his daughter’s company. Through interviews with several hundred customers, Get Mr. learned what it would take to get more men on board with daily SPF – that is,
sun protection factor. “We learned that, if we could combine the benefits of sun protections with the positive experience of lightweight, good-smelling (not neutralized) scents, and all-mineral, safe products, that would motivate men,” Goldstein says. “That’s our goal – to make something that men look forward to using in the morning.” With basic instructions of five pumps and 15 seconds every day, The Daily does exactly that in its second iteration, which evolved through customer feedback. The ingredients featured address men’s skin issues, like oiliness and acne-proneness, making it a product that serves universally. The brand continues to educate itself on skin concerns and shares that wealth of knowledge whenever and wherever possible, including through partnerships, like the three-part skin health series Dr. Beth Goldstein did with legendary broadcast journalist Katie Couric. Get Mr. prides itself on its transparency and keeping the planet front of mind, with eco-conscious packaging and mineral-only active ingredients. Be on the lookout in the coming months for new product releases!

he first thing I do to make my garden feel summery involves adding a mass of Boston ferns as the backdrop for adding drama. Brilliant color or phenomenal leaves can bring the tropics to any home oasis. We have our traditional indoor/outdoor friends, such as the white bird of paradise and tree gardenia, which venture onto the deck after the last frost, but they benefit from added pizazz. My goal involves creating a space that could occupy a tropical island in the Pacific. To add a dramatic splash of color to your courtyard, patio or pool deck, try potted hibiscus from the new 2021 series of Jazzy Jewel tropical hibiscus from Monrovia Nursery. Selected for heavy bud counts and blooms of great substance in clear classic colors of Ruby, Gold, Amber and Opal, these shrub hibiscus also have excellent foliage. They will set a tropical tone in full-sun containers. Although not cold-hardy here, they might happily winter in a sunny window or solarium. Plumerias, also called frangipani, add height, texture and fragrance. Some popular, very fragrant clones are San Germaine, Aztec Gold and Vera Cruz Rose. Another resident of my sunroom that migrates annually, the tropical is deciduous and will lose its leaves by December. For a shady patio area, pink variegated Chinese evergreen makes both a wonderful summer shady-patio plant and the perfect winter houseguest – a welcome burst of color that’s not another caladium. Finish your summer display with majesty. Many new varieties of genus Colocasia, elephant ears, have been released in the last several years and will stop visitors in their tracks with their giant foliage. My favorites include the red-stemmed Sangria and the crazy Pharaoh’s Mask. They adapt well to containers and can be overwintered in the garage. Any one of them will create a lush, tropical feel. To make it all come together, invest in a potted palm tree and a few new large pots. They hold more moisture and look more elegant than a

DESIGN DIGESt MOSBY BUILDING ARTS
From om Concept to

A
s a private, personal space, your bathroom should show off style and functionality in every feature. On their most recent bathroom redesign, Jenn Lewis and Shannon Cross, designers with Mosby Building Arts, teamed up to bring their client’s vision to life. Every Mosby project works directly with the client from start to finish to ensure that their final space is exactly how they envisioned. With this in mind, Lewis and Cross made sure they took the time to get to know their client’s personality, as well as develop an understanding of what she felt her current bathroom was lacking. “We make sure that we understand why they’re doing a remodel, so we know we can incorporate their wants and needs for the final design,” Lewis explains. “We like to find the inspiration from their personal life and bring that into their space.” Crafting an aura of simple elegance was the duo’s ultimate goal, along with opening up the space as a whole. To that end, the Mosby team removed walls in the bathroom, thereby creating a more light and spacious feel. The shower was also expanded, by removing the existing built-in bathtub and replacing it with a free-standing tub made from volcanic ash. “The volcanic ash holds in heat while having the appearance of a matte white tub,” Cross describes. “It added elegance and also made the space look larger.” Lewis and Cross also made sure to incorporate the client’s desire for a warm and natural aesthetic in the redesigned room. Beyond the tub, the team accomplished this mission by bringing in wood-like porcelain, herringbone flooring, which carried a warmer tone throughout the space, and also used a natural pebble tile on the shower floor. The result was a spacious and sophisticated room with eye-catching design elements throughout. Cross explains that the Mosby team works hard to pair the perfect designers with your needs and style: “We take a concept and bring it to completion to bring our clients’ dream space to life.” 645 Leffingwell Ave., St. Louis, 314-909-1800, mosbybuildingarts.com

rom a young age, Samantha Stirmlinger was fond of fashion. However, it wasn’t until she found herself homebound during the COVID-19 crisis that she decided to combine her passion for fashion with her buying-and-selling background to create an online shopping source, Marigold Boutique. “My mom’s mom, Mary Catherine, would make her own clothes, and any time you saw her, she was always in gold, dressed to the nines, hoop earrings, just always loved fashion,” Stirmlinger says. “We would always talk fashion and talk about outfits. I think she kind of gave me that love for fashion.” It similarly gave Stirmlinger the name for her online boutique, which she launched out of her Creve Coeur home last October. “We kind of combined her name, Mary, with gold, to get the Marigold name,” Stirmlinger says. “If you go to our site, you’ll see pretty much only gold jewelry and gold accessories, and so I think I got that love for gold from her. She is not here with us, but I know she helps me along the way. I think she would love this.” And what customers love is how Stirmlinger streamlines the online-shopping experience for metro area shoppers. “We do a 10-mile radius for hand delivery – and that usually takes 24 to 48 hours,” Stirmlinger says. “Then we also have a free porch pickup in case they need it sooner than that.” Stirmlinger also conducts two to three pop-up shops a month in locations such as the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market, City Foundry STL and Missouri Athletic Club – and has also started doing private events. She also recently opened a shop inside Painted Tree Boutiques, a marketplace in Ballwin that supports small businesses. “This past Saturday, I was actually at a housewarming party,” Stirmlinger says. “It was a customer who had 25 girls over, and they were doing a brunch. I brought all of my stuff to her, had a couple of racks and accessories,
and everybody could shop there while they had fun.” Fun, cozy, and bohemian are just some of the descriptors of Marigold Boutique’s style. “I try to just stay on the fashion trends as they change,” Stirmlinger says. “But I am definitely into the boho side of things.” Offerings include anything from dresses and rompers to leisure sets and sunglasses to tops and bottoms – all of which Stirmlinger hand-selects for her site by shopping at markets in Dallas, Las Vegas and Atlanta. “I really try to take the time, touch the clothes to make sure the quality is good and take customer feedback in what the trends are,” Stirmlinger says. “Obviously, you want the clothes to look good, but the reason I travel and go to markets and vendors is because I want to find clothes that not only look good but also feel good, are the best quality you can find and will hold up for many wears.” And because inclusivity is important to her brand, she also tries to stock items at a variety of price points and from a variety of brands, such as L*Space, Daydreamer and Show Me Your Mumu, as well as brands that are less well-known. “I just try to hit the market of anyone looking for an outfit for a certain event, whatever that might be, whatever your price range,” Stirmlinger says. “I try to shop to get something everybody would like and could afford.” Shopping with Marigold Boutique also affords Stirmlinger the opportunity to donate 10 percent of her yearly sales to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. “My mom is a breast cancer survivor, so that is near and dear to my heart,” Stirmlinger says. “They support strong women, and because of everything they stand for, I just knew that is something I wanted to give back to when I started this.” And although Stirmlinger’s side hustle is just shy of eight months old, she has been pleasantly surprised by its success. “We just get more customers every day, from more and more states, ordering online,” she says. “This has just been growing like crazy. It’s so exciting to see.” Marigold Boutique, located inside Painted Tree Boutiques, 14850 Manchester Road, St. Louis, shopmarigoldstl.com LadueNews.com | may 28, 2021

SAINT LOUIS BALLET
A BALLET IS BORN Story by Andrea Smith | Photos by Kelly Pratt, courtesy of Saint Louis Ballet
S
aint Louis Ballet presented its 2021 spring gala as a virtual event that took audiences behind the curtain and into the minds of the choreographers and a composer who bring ballets to life. “A Ballet is Born” illustrated the process of creating a ballet with Gen Horiuchi, Saint Louis Ballet executive and artistic director; teacher and choreographer Nilas Martins, who is a former New York City Ballet principal dancer; and pianist/ composer Atsushi Toya Tokuya, more commonly known as TOYA. Viewers were given the opportunity to discover what inspires a particular piece and the resources required to transform an idea into a spectacular onstage production. The program, hosted by KSDK anchor Anne Allred, premiered on Saint Louis Ballet’s gala website and YouTube channel on May 22 but remains available to stream through May 31. Supporters may donate online through the gala website or at stlouisballet.org/donate. According to the press release, donations and proceeds from the event will benefit Saint Louis Ballet’s performance season and outreach programs, such as its in-school program Pointe to Succeed, which “brings the joy of ballet to underserved children in our community.” The company will return to the Touhill Performing Arts Center for live performances on May 29 and 30. DINNER TO GO
TERROR TACOS By Mabel Suen
T
error Tacos, which debuted on March 19 in St. Louis’ South Grand Community Improvement District, features vegan tacos and street food with Southwestern flair, set to a backdrop of heavy metal music and horror movies. The casual restaurant comes from Brian Roach and his brother Bradley Roach, who previously served as the manager and cook of local vegan eatery Seedz Cafe, and fills the space previously occupied by Baida Moroccan Restaurant. “We’ve been eyeing South Grand for a while,” Bradley Roach says. “Brian and I have talked about starting our own taco place for years and years. When we started taking it seriously, we knew we wanted it to be on South Grand with a lot of the other vegan-centric restaurants in the area, who have been so welcoming. We really love Pizza Head, Lulu’s [Local Eatery] and Tree House.”
60 May 28, 2021 | LadueNews.com
The brothers, who grew up in Colorado, New Mexico and California, developed their Southwestern-inspired recipes over time based on their own tastes and diets. Everything – from the restaurant’s sauces to the vegan meat substitute “seitan” to vegan cheese and sour cream – is made from scratch. “I think people are going to love the food even if they’re not vegan – in fact, that’s one of the biggest compliments we’ve gotten about the food,” Brian Roach says. Specialties include birria tacos with seitan, red cabbage, onion, cilantro and dipping consommé. The Terror Burrito, another popular pick, features a burrito stuffed with seasoned veggie grounds, cilantro rice, green onions, seasoned black beans, chipotle oat cheese, green chile sauce, shredded lettuce and sour cream. The folded quesadilla – still another highlight –
brims with such components as grilled, marinated cilantro-lime tofu and fajita veggies. The house pozole rojo (inspired by a family recipe) is made vegan with a variety of dried peppers, hominy, seitan and onions.

A Slice of History By Drew Gieseke

local gem that celebrates a slice of St. Louis history, the Campbell House Museum tells the stories of the people who once lived in the home to demonstrate how American life has changed in the past 200 years. Since St. Louis’ founding in 1764, few Midwestern cities can match its historical importance, and in the early 20th century, the Gateway to the West became world-renowned as a top-tier city. “It’s a real microcosm of America – [ from the] wealthy family at the top of the social hierarchy to the workers who made life in this house possible,” says Andy Hahn, the museum’s executive director. Visitors learn about life during the late 1800s and early 1900s through the lens of the location itself, from the structure of the building to the authentic artifacts found in each room. With era fixtures, furniture, paintings and other attractions, the house touts an almost endless collection of turn-of-the-century treasures. “It’s the objects that really get people excited,” Hahn says. “Our property still encapsulates and contains thousands of objects that belonged to this family.” This year should be big for the museum. First, it has two different components on display at the Saint Louis Art Museum and a third coming later this year. Second, 2021 marks the 170th anniversary of the construction of the Campbell house, which was originally completed in 1851. (The Campbells lived in the house from 1854 to 1938.) The museum also completed a $2 million expansion in winter 2020 that added programming space and enhanced accessibility by way of a new, four-story elevator. “Prior to the completion, this building was the poster child for an inaccessible space,” says Hahn, who points out that before the renovation, guests and tour docents were expected to climb more than 120 stairs to see the entire home.
“We’re a volunteer-driven organization, and it really limited our volunteers.” To Hahn (and countless past guests), it’s these volunteers who really make the museum shine. “Everyone that comes here gets a personal, one-on-one tour with a guide,” Hahn says. “Our
guides are trained to tailor a visit to the visitors, so it’s really a kind of interactive experience that the visitor helps make themselves.”

THE WINE LIFE By Stanley Browne
2019 CONDUIT Grapes: 100% Viognier Location: El Dorado County, California Owner: Aaron Bryan Winemaker: Aaron Bryan Approximate Retail Price: $22 Website: conduitwine.com TASTING NOTES Color: Deep golden hue; slightly hazy due to lack of filtering Aroma: Rich and enticing, with aromas of mango, pineapple and honey Taste: Complex and medium-bodied with an array of tropical fruit flavors, candied lemon, blended with balanced acidity and a delicate creamy finish
I
n Northern California’s Sierra Foothills American Viticultural Area lies the wine region of El Dorado. Originally made famous
for being one of the first places in the state where gold was struck, the beautiful region of El Dorado now boasts vast vineyards and wineries. Many winegrowers choose this area for its soils, elevation and microclimates. One such producer, Aaron Bryan, openly admits his winemaking background to be far from formal, but also considers his unique approach an advantage. Bryan got his start making wine and beer in his spare time out of a garage and now serves as proprietor of Conduit wines, divergent vine wines and Tag + Jug Cider Co. of Somerset, California. All his endeavors demonstrate a less-traveled approach to expressing the many varietals with which he works. Through working with only the “cleanest” vineyards, with a focus on sustainable and organic practices, to taking a “hands-
off ” approach in the winery itself, Bryan makes sure his wines allow the terroir of the land to shine. The Conduit viognier ranks as a particularly delicious and easydrinking wine. This unfiltered white wine’s structure, texture and flavors create an experience on the palate that’s not only amazing in itself but also pairs perfectly with foods. As the label brags, this “wild and unruly” viognier will have you coming back for thirds. Food Pairings: White fish with buttery sauces pair well with this viognier, as do softer, creamier cheeses, charcuterie, salads with rich dressings, tuna or steak tartare and curd-based desserts.

CheCk this, Chess fans. st. Louis’ newest arrivaL, super grand master Levon AroniAn, ranks no. 5 in the worLd at the game of skiLL and wiLL join feLLow top-20-ranked pLayers in representing the U.s.
O
ne of the world’s most elite chess players, Levon Aronian, first conquered the game at a global level in the 1994 World Youth Chess Championship. Since then, he’s led the national team for his home country of Armenia to three Olympiad gold metals and one World Team Championship gold. Individually, he claimed victory in the 2005 and 2017 World Cup, the Linares International Chess Tournament in 2006, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 2008 and 2011, Norway Chess in 2017, the 2017 and 2019 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz and the 2015 and 2018 Sinquefield Cup. Now, in large part due to the nonprofit Saint Louis Chess Club, the 38-year-old super grandmaster of chess has chosen to make St. Louis his home. Aronian first visited the Gateway to the West in 2013 to compete in the inaugural Sinquefield Cup tournament, named for the co-founder of the Saint Louis Chess Club, Rex Sinquefield, and his wife, Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield. “I saw how St. Louis had become a global city for chess, and it has continued to grow and expand since then,” Aronian says. “If you are a chess player, St. Louis is one of the best places to live in the world! It is exciting for chess players to live in a city that supports chess through organizations like the Saint Louis Chess Club and the World Chess Hall of Fame.” Aronian says he recently found himself at a crossroads. Armenia cut funding for the sport, as reported by The Guardian, amid political unrest. In this change, though, he found a new opportunity to excel in his career. “Rex [Sinquefield] has such respect for the game of chess,” Aronian says. “Although he is accomplished in the world of finance and economics, I found him to be a down-to-earth, humble man who loves chess and has a passion to support and grow the game – locally, nationally and internationally.” The two men share interests in classical music and art, and Aronian appreciates the culture found in St. Louis, specifically citing its Grammy
Award-winning symphony, the National Saxophone Museum, Forest Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden. “I’m living in a golden age of chess and have had a chance to play against some of the greats, as well as many up-and-coming chess players,” Aronian says. He names the current reigning world chess champion, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, as one of his greatest challengers: “He’s a very talented player, with a natural feel for the game, and he is always a tough opponent. I feel lucky to experience playing against opponents who have never played a computer, as well as younger opponents who have grown up in the advanced technological era of online and AI chess.” Next up for Aronian is the 2021 Grand Chess Tour, which kicks off in Bucharest, Romania, in early June. He is especially excited to compete in his new home base for the final leg of the tour in the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz and the Sinquefield Cup. “I look forward to holding the pieces again, playing over-the-board games and having a chat with my opponent after the game,” Aronian says, as the coronaviral pandemic had shifted how the sport was played in the past year. “It makes me extremely happy to know that the [Saint Louis Chess] Club is expanding to become one of the best chess meccas in the world. The chess movement continues to thrive in St. Louis, which is why it is the chess capital of the United States.” He continues: “For the last 60 years, Russia and the Soviet Union were the dominant countries in chess, but nowadays, American chess can compete. When you want to find a city that has the best chess players in the world, it is either Moscow, Russia, or St. Louis, Missouri, which is very impressive.” Ready to take on the super grandmaster? Aronian loves sharing the culture of chess with any and all – eliciting an invitation to come play, no matter your skill level.
