hat do you love about St. Louis? If you ask a true St. Louisan, there’s a good chance you won’t get just one single answer. These days, it seems our fair city has so much more to offer by way of attractions, dining, shopping, and arts and entertainment that it sometimes is hard to keep up. And it’s a good thing, too, because if you enjoy exploring as much as I do, one of the most exhilarating feelings is finding something worth talking about right in your own backyard. Take for instance, the Campbell House Museum, long considered one of the finest examples of the Victorian high life in America, which is the most resplendent it has ever been since its ne plus ultra during the Gilded Age. Have you been lately? You should see it now, following a multi-million dollar renovation that included the painstaking restoration of the red velvet drapery in the Victorian parlor. And what’s more St. Louis than images of the imposing Festival Hall at the 1904 World’s Fair, or the statue of our city’s namesake gallantly astride a horse in front of the spectacular Saint Louis Art Museum? You have the genius of Cass Gilbert to thank for that. In this edition, we tip our hat to one of America’s foremost ‘star-chitects.’ We also salute a Clayton artist whose name you won’t find on any pantheon just yet, but whose budding talent is a true find for us at Ladue News and for the cover of our Elegant Living Summer 2013 edition. Happy reading!

about the cover artist Kyle Lucks took the roundabout route to his career, starting out as a fine arts major but eventually graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in marketing. After four years in that field, he took the leap to become a freelance artist a year and a half ago. The Clayton artist is a self-taught watercolorist who says he was drawn to the medium because of its usefulness in conveying a contrast between light and dark. “Watercolor allows for the illusion the paper is glowing,” he notes. “It can be something as mundane as some birds on a telephone pole on a rainy day, and if you find the right contrast in lighting, it can still be a beautiful image.”

Lucks’ artistry ranges from portraits to landscapes and cityscapes, as well as hand-painted wine bottles that have become popular gifts for wedding showers, anniversaries and birthdays. You can see his work on view at Mr. Guy in Ladue and Fleur de Lis Bridal Boutique in Clayton. For more information, visit kylelucks.com.

riends and family say that Megan McCarthy Strout and Ryan Emerson Maher were meant to be together—even if their paths often seemed to lead them apart. The couple met during their senior year of high school, but attended different colleges; she went to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire while he chose Colby College in Maine. Romance blossomed despite the distance, which only strengthened their commitment to one another. But after graduation, Megan headed to Columbus, Ohio, to begin her career at the corporate headquarters of Abercrombie & Fitch. Ryan, in the meantime, earned the rank of captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. Before deploying to Afghanistan, he promised his grandmother that he would ask Megan to marry him upon his return. Once safely home, it wasn’t long before he surprised Megan with a ring. The proposal took place on a vacation to Naples, Fla., beneath the shady branches of an oak tree planted in memory of Ryan’s grandfather. It was a fitting location, since the oak is a universal symbol of strength and endurance. The oak became a

motif recurring in their invitations, decorations and guest programs. They were wed October 6 at Our Lady of the Pillar Church. Fr. Gregory Mohrman of St. Louis Priory officiated with Megan’s uncle, Deacon Thomas McCarthy, administering the vows. For her attendants, Megan chose a friend from each stage of her life: grade school and high school, college and post-college. Ryan’s brother, Kevin Maher Jr., served as best man. The reception was held at Bellerive Country Club, where the couple entered under a canopy of military sabers and cut the first slice of wedding cake with Ryan’s Mameluke Marine Corps sword. The ceremony culminated in a stunning fireworks display—Ryan’s gift to Megan and their guests. The newlyweds honeymooned at the Four Seasons Resort Maui. Ryan, who is well-versed in military history, served as Megan’s guide during a visit to Pearl Harbor. Today, they are happy to be settled in their hometown of St. Louis, where Megan is a brand manager for Nature’s Variety pet food, and Ryan pursues an MBA at Washington University.

W EDDINGS Barnhart & Lawlor

Ode to St. Louis By Katherine Comfort-Mason

C

ould there be a more appropriate first date for a pair of dyed-in-the-wool St. Louisans than attending a baseball game and cheering for their beloved Cardinals? Regardless of the score, things certainly turned out well for Caley Barnhart and Jack Lawlor. Caley and Jack grew up in the same circles and have been acquainted since high school. In college (Saint Louis University and the University of Dayton, respectively), their small world became larger; but after graduation, they were drawn back together. Her best friend and his cousin, who were dating, saw potential in the pairing, and arranged that initial Busch Stadium rendezvous in March 2011. Obviously, sparks flew. After several happy months, Jack, who is a financial adviser with Edward Jones, was transferred to Indiana. Undaunted, the two decided to maintain their relationship long-distance; and the following year, Caley landed a position at the Indianapolis office of PricewaterhouseCoopers. It was during a trip back to the Gateway City that Jack took Caley to a romantic dinner at Vin de Set, where he

26

SUMMER 2013 • Elegant living    {LadueNews.com}

popped the question. And that wasn’t the only surprise he had planned. After she accepted, the pair headed to Molly Darcy’s pub, where, much to Caley’s delight, family and friends were waiting to congratulate them. Planning a wedding remotely posed some challenges, but the couple never doubted that it should be held in their hometown. Caley wanted to keep the day simple and laid-back, with a focus on loved ones. Her bridesmaids included sisters (hers and his), plus her cousins and longtime friends. For the ceremony, she chose her childhood parish of Ste. Genevieve du Bois, with Fr. Mark Mackenzie of St. Matthew the Apostle officiating. After Jack kissed his bride, Ode to Joy made for a triumphant recessional. And at the reception, Caley was overjoyed to see everyone enjoying themselves on the dance floor—including her 90-year-old grandfather. As Caley and Jack shared their final dance, guests showered them with confetti. Then it was off to a honeymoon at Ladera Resort on St. Lucia, where they unwound by lounging on the beach. The newlyweds live in Indianapolis, but it’s pretty obvious where their hearts are.

After growing closer and graduating from Villanova University, Chris and Meredith found their lives on the same path. With Meredith’s parents’ blessing, Chris orchestrated a trip to Annapolis, Md., a destination the couple had previously enjoyed when attending a friend’s wedding. Unbeknownst to Meredith, Chris was piecing together a romantic picnic lunch and beachfront proposal. “It’s a good thing her parents said yes, because I had already planned the proposal,” he says, laughing. But in the wee hours of Feb. 4, 2012, Chris was so excited he couldn’t sleep. So he awoke Meredith at 3 a.m. for breakfast and a walk on the beach. That walk led the couple down paths through lush forest atop bluffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. “Meredith was confused as to why we were off the beaten path,” Chris remembers. But soon, it would all make sense. In the privacy of the secluded beach park with the waves crashing on

the shore, Chris proposed. “I was completely shocked,” Meredith says. “It was a fun surprise.” And again, she said yes to Chris right away. On April 27, 2013, Meredith and Chris celebrated their big day in St. Louis, where they have chosen to reside to be near Meredith’s family. About 120 friends and family members from across the country joined the couple for a traditional ceremony at Ste. Genevieve du Bois, followed by an elegant reception at Algonquin Golf Club. “We were thrilled with everything, from the venue to the band, photos, flowers and cake,” Meredith says. The reception celebration was a highlight, the couple says. “Every single person there was dancing, and then we had our getaway in my friend’s baby blue ’68 Stingray,” Chris recalls. The couple says their parents and wedding party made their big day especially memorable—particularly through the best man and matron-of-honor speeches. “My brother said Meredith looked at me in a very special way,” Chris says. “And Meredith’s sister complimented me on being a tremendous uncle and loving her kids so much. It was really meaningful.” The couple says they couldn’t have been happier about their special day. After a honeymoon in Hawaii, they now reside in St. Louis’ Lafayette Square. Continued on page 34

Massage Make the Most of Your

By Brittany Nay

Whether you are looking to relieve aching muscles or simply relax, a massage can provide a sweet escape from the daily grind. Let these tips for what to do before and after a session help you achieve the stress-free experience that will make the most of your massage.

Paige Wilkinson of Knot Magic Before: • Do your homework. Research therapists to get the right treatment—massage can focus on relaxation or therapy. • Dress the part. Wear loosefitting, comfortable clothing.

• Put health first. Arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork, indicating any serious health concerns or special requests. After: • Indulge in a relaxing bath. Before bed, take a 20-minute bath to increase circulation and process

lactic acid that has built up in muscles during the massage. • Stay stress-free. Avoid too much activity, such as playing with the kids or pets, before bed. • Slumber. Sleep will help decrease soreness, so be sure to get more than six hours. Continued on page 56

h e a lt h Continued from page 55 Beki Burley of Massage for Healing and Wellness Before: • Avoid distractions. Skip the lotion, perfume and shaving—all of this can interfere with the massage. • Arrive early. Relax and become emotionally calm so you can fully take in the massage. • Vo i c e y o u r o p i n i o n . Communicate your preferences, from the ideal pressure to the areas you would like to concentrate on and avoid. After: • Stay hydrated. Similar to exercise, your body is going through changes during a massage—replenish it with plenty of water. • Be aware of your body. Don’t race back into your life—listen

to your muscles, as well as your emotions: Slow down, take a deep breath and allow the massage to work throughout your body. • Take it to heart. Listen to your therapist’s suggestions about taking care of your body—massage is part of a health care regimen that can help in many ways when approached properly. Alison Bell of Go!Spa Before: • Hydrate thoroughly. Muscles respond well to therapeutic bodywork when hydrated, resulting in a more beneficial and healing massage. • Feel well. If you have an illness, reschedule when you are feeling better—massage can stimulate your immune system even further

and cause your body to overwork, making you more sick. • Breathe and be ready to receive. Breathing is a vital method of detoxification, and when we feel anxious or stressed, a deep, cleansing breath can have an immediate calming effect. After: • Listen to your body. Some will want to be active, while others may enjoy a period of rest after a soothing, healing massage. • Enjoy an aromatherapy bath. Take a calming soak in a bath with sea salt and a few drops of aromatherapy oil. • Just breathe. Purposeful, focused breathing allows the body to release tension and accept the beneficial bodywork.

Life in the Gilded Age

T

o visit the Campbell House in the Lucas Place neighborhood downtown is to step back in time. The sevenlevel, 10,500-square-foot house offers a rare glimpse into the privileged lifestyle of the Campbells and families like them who lived in Lucas Place, which for a brief 40-year period, was St. Louis’ premier neighborhood before urban noise and pollution drove residents farther west. Located at 14th Street, the four-block residential enclave was home to successful merchants,

politicians, military officers and physicians; and surrounded by some of the city’s finest institutions, including Washington University, Mary Institute and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Today, the Campbell family home, now a museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only surviving residential building in the neighborhood. Executive director Andrew Hahn and a small cadre of young interns and docents oversee the museum, giving tours, as well as conducting historical research. Built in 1851, the Campbell house was the first to Continued on page 58

be erected in the neighborhood. Three years later, the stately brick structure became home to renowned fur trader and entrepreneur Robert Campbell, wife Virginia, and their family, and as many as 150 individuals who provided domestic services from 1854 until 1938. When the Campbells’ last surviving son passed away in 1938, the home and its contents were inherited by Yale University. Shortly thereafter, a group of

St. Louisans formed the Campbell House Foundation to raise funds to preserve the house as a landmark. Key to that effort was local retailer Stix, Baer and Fuller, which purchased the home for the foundation. Donated funds also were used to purchase the Campbell family’s possessions, which were sold at an Ivey-Selkirk auction in 1941. Although the foundation succeeded in purchasing most of the estate lots at auction, many were purchased by individuals. Continued on page 60

A Closer Look:

The Victorian Parlor Drapery The design and installation of custom drapery in the Campbell House’s Victorian parlor was the piece de resistance in the museum’s five-year, $3-million restoration. Like everything else involved in the restoration, the new drapery was funded by generous donations from interested and involved St. Louisans. Campbell House board member and interior designer Tim Rohan, whose firm is well-known for its luxurious custom work, was responsible for the design, sourcing and fabrication of the new drapery, which was essential for both practical, as well as aesthetic, reasons in a city home. “Window drapery in city mansions was important for privacy and warmth, and to protect the interior from sunlight, which would fade their mahogany furniture,” Rohan explains. “After researching the archives of Campbell House, we found photos of what parlor drapery looked like in 1860 to 1870. From these photos, we copied the opulent look for the elegant Victorian mansion. It was important for us to create and maintain what was existing in the house.” Ultimately, Rohan selected sumptuous red velvet manufactured in Spain to re-create the drapery in the parlor as it might have looked a century ago. “In the Victorian period, jewel tones were in vogue, especially reds, blues, golds and purples,” he notes. “The Victorians were never afraid of color; and

their eyes were used to seeing patterned fabrics, patterned carpets and patterned walls.” All told, it took more than 100 yards of fabric to create the panels in the parlor, which features four narrow windows, plus an extremely large bay window and a 14-foot-high ceiling. “The most challenging part of the project was not the production labor,” says Rohan, who relied

on a trusted artisan to fabricate the Victorian masterpiece. “The daunting task was installing new drapery rods that could support the 14-foot-long drapery panels and have them fit under the 19th-century, gold-leaf cornices. Our drapery installer took this task in stride and, over the course of two-anda-half days, helped transform the Campbell House Victorian parlor back to its former glory.”

Interestingly, a number of those objects have found their way back to the museum through the years, according to Hahn. Most recently, a set of Mrs. Campbell’s sterling silver goblets was returned to the museum as a donation. The fortunate result of this curious phenomenon is that some 90 percent of the museum’s contents are original Campbell possessions, including furniture, oil paintings, clothing, carriages, photographs and hundreds of letters, which provide detailed insight into the family’s life in both pre- and post-Civil War St. Louis. In fact, the Campbell house is now among the finest examples of high Victorian style in America following the recent completion of a five-year, $3-million renovation. The painstaking restoration has brought the one-time showpiece back to its original grandeur of the opulent 1880s, when the Campbell home was considered a center of St. Louis society. Graceful proportions, high ceilings, long, narrow windows, and large, heavily gilded cornices provide a rich backdrop for the elaborately carved Victorian mahogany furniture, heavy drapery and floral carpeting recently recreated for the museum. Indeed, the 162-year-old home looks fresher than ever, as if the elegant Mrs. Campbell herself were still the chatelaine and ready to receive her guests—St. Louis’ very own Gilded Age society.

HOME THE ARCHITECTURE OF CASS GILBERT

A St. Louis Civic

TREASURE FOR MANY ST. LOUISANS, THE Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park is their single-most favorite public structure. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style and sited on a majestic hill that overlooks the Great Lagoon, the building is arguably the finest example of Classic Revival architecture in St. Louis. The Art Museum and Festival H a l l ( b o t h d e s i g n e d fo r t h e Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904), as well as the St. Louis Public Library’s Central Library, are the work of architect Cass Gilbert, who, were he still alive, would likely be the equivalent of today’s ‘starchitect.’ When he was chosen as the winner of the architectural competition for the St. Louis Public Library, Gilbert was among the nation’s most famous a rc h i te c ts a n d re s p o n sible for designing some of its greatest structures, including New York City’s Woolworth Building, which at the time, was the tallest building in the world and still is considered by many as the most beautiful skyscraper ever built. “Gilbert had a 50-year architectural career from 1883 to 1934, so he was active through a period of the nation’s history in which key Continued on page 64 62

cultural, governmental and commercial buildings were needed,” explains Sharon Irish, author of Cass Gilbert, Architect: Modern Traditionalist, and a lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. “Gilbert was a consummate networker and manager of people. While he kept tight control over his building designs, he delegated tasks to talented people who worked for and with him,” Irish notes. “Due to Gilbert’s management style and eclectic aesthetic, he could compete for large projects and frequently win commissions because he understood what the clients wanted and could consistently deliver high-quality designs.” Gilbert practiced architecture in Minnesota for almost 20 years before moving to New York City. He retained a strong presence in the Midwest, as well as national connections through his railroad clients that were reflected in his firm’s commissions. “During that first decade of the 20th century, Gilbert’s office was finishing up the M innesota State Capitol and working in New Jersey, Montana, Wisconsin, Connecticut and Massachusetts on libraries, banks, clubs, schools, courthouses and railroad stations, as well as spearheading major projects in St. Louis and New York,” Irish says. “While opening the St. Louis Public

Gilbert designed the Palace of Fine Arts (now the Saint Louis Art Museum) as the Exposition’s only permanent structure.

Library in 1912, his firm was overseeing two other public libraries, a hotel and the Woolworth Building, among others. The St. Louis commission continued Gilbert’s productive movement between scales and building types—from commercial skyscrapers to civic structures and back—that characterized his whole career.” Although he was adept at designing buildings in the Beaux-Arts style, Gilbert was not trained at the Paris-based Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Rather, he apprenticed with an architect in St. Paul, worked as a surveyor, traveled for a few months in Europe, and studied for one year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late 1870s, which was not an unusual trajectory for a late 19th-century architect. “MIT taught the Beaux-Arts system of design—starting with the plan and carefully controlling the interior spaces according to the type or function of a building—so Gilbert was familiar with it,” Irish explains. “In terms of stylistic details—Gothic pointed arches, or arcaded Renaissance entries, for instance—the Beaux-Arts was eclectic in using a range of historic forms. In that sense, Gilbert was eclectic because he, too, selected historical motifs depending on the site, function and client of the building.”

Although Gilbert’s initial tour of Europe occurred in the 1870s, he returned to England, France, Germany and Italy repeatedly throughout his career. “Often, he would study moldings, column bases or a particular stairway at certain buildings in order to adapt them for a design he was working on,” Irish says. “Certainly, Medieval and Renaissance formal precedents in Europe were crucial sources for Gilbert; he also studied the use of materials there—stone, brick and decorative arts.” Indeed, Gilbert’s architectural legacy in St. Louis not only is among the city’s greatest civic treasures; it also is one of the clearest illustrations of the city’s ties to the great European architectural traditions.

Trina Turk’s Vintage Modern Style BY NANCY ROBINSON

T

RINA TURK IS TO southern California what Lilly Pulitzer was to Palm Beach. Just as the late Florida socialite channeled the sunny optimism and low-key chic of Palm Beach through her brand, Turk’s design outlook and aesthetic is informed by the elan and outdoor lifestyle of the Golden State. Turk says she draws much of her inspiration from her restored Mid-Century homes in Los Angeles’ creative enclave of Silver Lake and in Palm Springs, as well as her travels up and down the California coast. Today, you can experience her unique

brand of vintage modern style, not only in her signature fashion apparel, but also on bedding, decorative pillows, and durable indoor/outdoor fabric by the yard.

Turk also has launched a line of fragranced candles to coordinate with various fabric patterns in her bedding line.

n e su c h i s l a n d escape is Bainbridge Island, a scenic, 35-minute ferry ride from Pier 52 in downtown Seattle and within the Central Puget Sound basin. Approximately 5 miles wide and 10 miles long, with 53 picturesque miles of shoreline, you’ll find every water activity imaginable, a pedestrianfriendly town center, and quiet country roads for hiking and biking—all within an easy walk from the ferry. the sidewalks, along with winetasting and eateries such as Bee’s Luncheonette, Emmy’s Vege House and Doc’s Marina Grill. Above all, don’t miss The Harbour Public House, built in 1881 in the tradition of the English pub, with proprietors Jim and Judy Evans and their family living there for several years. This is not a place to count calories. As a certified purveyor of an ‘Honest Pint,’ the establishment ensures that a patron receive at least 16 ounces of beer when a pint is

poured. Follow this up with the Pub Clam Chowder. Never have I tasted such ambrosia: Baywater Salish Blue clams—left happily in their lovely shells—arrive in a large, steaming bowl of potatoes, onions, bacon and heavy cream. (I’m not finished.) A drizzle of white wine floats on top. (Still not finished.) Topping all this beauteousness is a pat of butter, melting into all the wonderment. (There, done.) But if that doesn’t do it for you, try the pub’s Poutine, a Quebec dish that’s basically French

fries topped with brown gravy, curd cheese and sometimes ground beef, sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions and/or black beans. Canadian Fernand Lachance, upon seeing this first served, exclaimed, Ca va faire une moudite poutine! Translated, this means, It will make a d*mn mess. It does. Charming inns, such as Island Country Inn, are available, but I loved the Eagle Harbor Inn, a ‘petit hotel’ offering five one-of-a-kind rooms and three custom townhouses

built around a garden courtyard. A short drive or bike ride from the downtown area is the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, an outdoor exhibit commemorating the forcible relocation and internment of Japanese Americans in 1942. While most of these families were moved to California, about 150 returned to the island after World War II and many family members continue to reside on the island today. Cycle along the lovely meadows and residential areas to see where

many in this art colony live. And the arts are everywhere. So much so one might assume every island resident is an artist. Not too much of an exaggeration, actually, as the art scene encompasses the entire island with resident artists, actors, dancers, designers, filmmakers, illustrators, musicians, painters, photographers, poets, sculptors, singers and writers. Whew! All this beneath the sleepy backdrop of Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Mountains…Seattle’s own Bali Hai.

Vanquish The

Has Arrived

T

he new 2014 Aston M a r t i n Va n q u i s h wa s recently unveiled in St. Louis to great acclaim and fanfare, during a first-class affair hosted by J.J. Mills and Graham Hill of St. Louis Motorsports. The guest list included Julian Jenkins, the regional director for Aston Martin of the Americas, who led the introduction of the new 2014 Vanquish in the beautiful newly remodeled Aston Martin showroom. Indeed, the star of the evening was an all-carbon-fiber-bodied beauty that updates the classic Aston Martin look with some modern and even futuristic styling cues and mechanical advancements. When it was driven in, the Vanquish elicited gasps from guests, as everyone crowded around to get a first glimpse of this rolling sculpture, while the unmistakable roar of its 565-horsepower, 6.0-liter, 12-cylinder engine filled the room. Aston Martin boasts the Vanquish offers “performance, presence and style”—and boy, does it! The Vanquish has a very small, optional back seat and a little trunk, so if you’re going on a trip, pack lightly. The center console is copied from the multi-million dollar, limited-production Aston Martin One-77 supercar. The engine is pushed way back in the engine compartment, adjusting the front/ rear balance of the car to as close to 50/50 as possible to enhance handling. Unfortunately, the Vanquish only will be offered with a 6-speed automatic transmission, no manual. But even with an automatic,

zero to 60 takes only four seconds. A new Vanquish will set you back about $280,000. It costs to be cool. The introduction of the Vanquish was part of a worldwide celebration surrounding the 100th anniversary of Aston Martin. Founded in 1913 by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin as Bamford & Martin, the name Aston Martin was adopted the next year in honor of Martin’s successful run at the Aston Hill climb in Buckinghamshire, England. Aston Martin’s racing legacy began in 1922 at the French Grand Prix. In 1928, it first entered the famous 24 hours of Le Mans race. In 1947, famed British industrialist David Brown took over Aston Martin, and the famous DB series of cars began with the DB2. (The company currently is producing a DB9 model.) Racing success and company growth continued throughout the 1950s. In 1963, the iconic DB5 was introduced. Often acclaimed as the most beautiful car in the world, the DB5 rose to fame as the preferred ride of Aston Martin’s most famous client, James Bond. Bond’s tricked-out DB5 was first driven by Sean Connery in Goldfinger, and most recently driven by Daniel Craig in Skyfall. Another famous client, Prince Charles, lent his 1969 Volante to his son, Prince William, who used it to transport his new bride, Catherine, through the streets of London on their wedding day. The ’70s were a rough time for

Aston Martin, requiring takeovers in 1972 and 1975. The infamous, futuristic-looking Lagonda sedan, introduced in the mid-’70s, was beautiful and had good performance, but was pricy and had reliability issues. In 1987, Ford bought a majority stake in Aston Martin, which gave it the capital and expertise to revive its line of cars and revitalize the whole company. In 1993, the ‘modern’ Aston Martin was reborn with the introduction of the DB7 sports coupe, which was the first glimpse of the iconic modern styling that has brought Aston Martin to where it is today. The real m o d e r n e ra began in 2003, with the opening of the company’s state-of-theart production facility in Gaydon, England, the first purpose-built production facility in its history. In 2007, Ford sold Aston Martin to a consortium of two major investment houses, but the management team continued its successful progress. In 2009, the Rapide, a sleek four-door sedan, was revealed, putting Aston Martin back in the sedan market after 30-years. Amazingly, Aston Martin has survived several financial pitfalls throughout the years, only to stand today—in its 100th year—in probably its most solid financial standing and with the strongest lineup of vehicles it has ever had. Here’s to another 100 years of iconic British sports-car motoring!

A new Vanquish will set you back about $280,000. It costs to be cool.

S

T. LOUIS’ FOOD CULTURE will be recognized on the national stage this summer, thanks to Cochon 555, a premier culinary event that will bring together some of the area’s very best chefs to see just what they can create with the pig. Cochon 555 is a series of national events spotlighting the sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs. Held annually since 2008, the Cochon tour crosses the country, hosting a variety of tasting and cooking events showcasing friendly competitions between chefs. At each event, five regional chefs each create a nose-totail menu from a single 200-pound heritage breed pig. The finale of the tour takes place June 16, when the top 10 winners from the various national contests compete for the title of King (or Queen) of Porc, determined by 20 selected judges as well as the hungry audience. Cochon also is about raising funds: As of last year, Cochon had donated more than $270,000 to charities and paid more than $400,000 directly to farmers across the country. Along with the tour, there are other Cochon-related events happening across the country, and St. Louis will be hosting one of them: On Sunday, Aug. 25, the Heritage BBQ will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel downtown, featuring a heritage pig BBQ cook-off between five local chefs and marking the first time that St. Louis has hosted a Cochon event. Heading up the St. Louis chef contingent for the porcine extravaganza is the Four Season’s own Fabrizio Schenardi, and he’ll be playing host to a group of the area’s finest chefs, including Gerard Craft (Niche, Pastaria, Brasserie, Taste), Kevin Willmann (Farmhaus) and Kevin Nashan (Sidney Street Cafe). Rounding out the roster is surprise guest Matthew Accarino, executive

chef for SPQR in San Francisco. The event will be a once-in-alifetime chance to see five culinary talents of this caliber working this closely together. Of course, all the chefs know their way around the pig, so the competition promises to be tight; and skill-wise, they all are at the top of the foodie pyramid. Before joining the Four Seasons in 2010, Schenardi worked in some of the finest hotel kitchens in the world, including the Pelagia Trattoria in the Renaissance International in Tampa, Fla. Craft, Nashan and Willmann are former James Beard Award nominees; and in 2011, Craft and Nashan both participated in the Cochon Heritage Fire event held in St. Helena, Calif. During his rise through the ranks, Accarino has

worked with some of the top culinary names in the world, including Tom Colicchio, Todd English and Thomas Keller, among others. Competition aside, though, education and camaraderie are the first order of business. “It’s going to be a great way for some local chefs to get together,” according to Schenardi. “I love to work with all them—it’s a good group of people.” As a prelude to the festivities, on Saturday, Aug. 24, Schenardi will prepare a four-course dinner that will feature Accarino and Cochon founder Brady Lowe. For tickets to the dinner and the BBQ , call Cielo Restaurant & Bar at the Four Seasons, 881-5800, or visit amuse cochon.com/2013/heritagebbqSTL.

The event will be a oncein-a-lifetime chance to see five culinary talents of this caliber working this closely together ... They all are at the top of the foodie pyramid.

CUPCAKES, ST. LOUIS STYLE

Piece of

BY MATT SORRELL

Cupcakes make it easier than ever to satisfy a sweet tooth. Perfectly sized for one — or two, if you’re feeling generous — each cupcake bite is an experience to be savored. Lucky for us, there seems to be a never-ending supply — and selection — thanks to local cupcake connoisseurs who have elevated the formerly ho-hum children’s birthday party staple to a whole new level.

JILLY’S CUPCAKE BAR With multiple wins on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and its cupcakes consistently appearing on a variety of ‘Best Of’ lists around town, Jilly’s has become one of the premier cupcake purveyors in town. The bakery offers special monthly flavors, holidayspecific cupcake creations and also mini-cupcake 12-packs. You can even get your treats delivered! According to ‘head cupcake’ Jill Segal, the Turtle Cheesecake cupcake, filled with dolce de leche caramel, is her current favorite. jillyscupcakebar.com

THE SWEET DIVINE

SARAH’S CAKE SHOP

What started out as a hobby for Jenna and Jason Siebert has become quite the culinary enterprise. First came The Sweet Divine food truck, where they began selling their delicious cupcakes and other baked goods. The mobile business became so popular that they started up a storefront operation, which recently moved to new digs in Soulard. The duo also has made a couple of appearances on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, ultimately winning the Angry Birds challenge. Check out the best-selling Drunken Pig, featuring Newcastle ale and bacon! thesweetdivine.com

This Chesterfield favorite has been baking up goodness for six years. Three years ago, Sarah’s Cake Stop rolled out as one of the first food trucks around town. Sarah’s offers five standard cupcake flavors all the time, plus daily specials. At the top of the popularity list—the Snack Cake, a high-end version of the old Hostess classic featuring vanilla cream frosting and dipped in ganache. sarahscakeshopstl.com

PINT SIZE BAKERY & COFFEE Chef/owner Christy Augustin has plenty of culinary chops—she graduated from Florida Culinary Institute and worked in some of the best kitchens in New Orleans before moving back to St. Louis, where she was pastry chef at King Louie’s and Sidney Street Cafe. As much as possible, she uses organic ingredients, free-range farm eggs and unbleached flours in her creations. She says the best-seller is the Double Vanilla, which has real vanilla bean in the cake and the icing. pintsizebakery.com

THE CUP Touted as the area’s “first gourmet cupcake bakery” in 2007, The Cup started out in the CWE and now has locations in Illinois and Tennessee, as well as another Missouri shop in Springfield. The menu is chock full of seasonal specials, featured flavors that rotate every four weeks and classics served daily, like the Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting topped with red velvet crumbles. cravethecup.com

SWEETART Part art gallery, part bakery, this neighborhood bakeshop has a focus on old-school goodness and the best ingredients available. No artificial flavors or high-fructose corn syrup here. Instead, SweetArt uses as many organic ingredients as possible so customers only have to think about how delicious their treats are, not what’s in them. On Tuesdays, the bakery has a ‘Cupcake Happy Hour’ from 4 to 6 p.m, so you can try a bunch for next to nothing. We’ve been told the Sweet Potato Pie cupcake is to die for! sweetartstl.com
