from the

EDITOR THE FOUNDATION FOR GREAT STORIES STARTS WITH GREAT people. Being able to connect our readers with stories of unique people and experiences gives us immense joy! This week, LN regular contributor Connie Mitchell introduces you to Odd Couples Housing. This roommate service helps link senior area residents with young new roommates – where cheap rent, assistance with chores and new friendships across age gaps all reside in one happy ecosystem. Read this Abode feature starting on p. 28 to get a whole new perspective on the word “roomie”! Speaking of revolutionizing a basic concept, Kismet Pharmacy & General Store is changing the game when it comes to a local apothecary. LN contributor Brittany Nay shares the story of Arthur Krichevsky, Kismet’s owner and resident pharmacist, and his journey to create a comfortable, accessible, cheery and unique drugstore in University City. I don’t want to give away all the magic, so be sure to check out this feature on p. 43 in our Daily section. Happy almost June! All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

MW is synonymous with luxury unrivaled. Diversity within its model lineup matched with a keen vision of what consumers want next has kept the German-born brand at the highest rank for customer loyalty. Locally, that same clientele devotion is inspired at BMW of West St. Louis, the dealership that has defined a new standard of excellence. “We aim to be the benchmark of the automobile business,” owner Craig Suntrup states. “Our goal is to make BMW affordable so that you can have the ultimate driving machine. We make sure our experience matches the brand, which is [to deliver] the best of the best.” Suntrup credits his management team – including general sales manager Brent Straub, sales manager Linzie Foster, business managers Bob Whay and Steven Toppins, and service manager Bryan Hiles – and dedicated staff for the dealership’s notable success. “In March, we were the No. 1 BMW store in St. Louis and No. 1 in the state of Missouri,” Suntrup informs. “What does that mean for the consumer? They get better selection, better experience and better pricing.” Go online to discover the elevated customer experience BMW of West St. Louis offers its clientele. The dealership provides aggressive pricing instantly in just a few clicks through its “unlock pricing” tool, a capability unique to this store.

“In three short years, we have [racked up] an unbelievable Google rating,” Suntrup notes. “We have 491 reviews and a 4.7 [out of 5] rating.” Part of that appeal stems from the remodeled dealership, rebuilt in September of last year to expand the showroom and revamp the delivery center, as well as to offer air conditioning and heating in the now-enclosed service drive. “We recently hired six additional technicians, for a total of 14, ensuring you have ample service so that there is minimal wait and your vehicle is fixed right the first time,” Suntrup assures potential customers. “We can pick up and drop off your car, and get you a service car to drive while yours is in the shop. You even get a complimentary car wash.” These amenities line up with the BMW image of opulence and superior craftsmanship. Suntrup and his team aim even higher, though, to leave an unbeatable impression on guests. It is in the attention to detail that BMW of West St. Louis makes its mark. As Suntrup explains: “We’ve got to match the brand. More thought goes into the stitch of a BMW leather seat than goes into [the design] of most cars.” And this dealership delivers in spades. EVENING OF HOPE

T

Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett

he 15th annual Evening of Hope, benefiting those affected by neurological disease, took place at The Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries in late April. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with passed hors d’oeuvres before dinner and an awards presentation. Dr. David H. Perlmutter, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of Washington University School of Medicine, received the Spirit of Hope Award from Mary Bettis, the board’s president. After dinner, guests enjoyed a musical performance by The 442s with special guest Erin Bode. Founder Christopher W. Hobler’s family helped create the Hope Center in collaboration with the medical school’s neurology department in 2004. Hope Happens allows researchers to receive funding for early-stage research and to respond fast to promising new pathways discovered in the course of interdisciplinary research at the center.

Hope Happens directly supports the targeted research at the Hope Center at Washington University via our fundraising programs. We bring hope by supporting science, and our focus is on a family of neurological disorders. These include ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis], Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, strokes – and unfortunately, the list continues. Our desire at Hope Happens is to accelerate research that will lead to treatments and cures in our lifetime.

Bach Society of Saint Louis

FESTIVAL GALA Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

F

or more than 300 years, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been inspiring and enriching the lives of millions and was reimagined for this year’s St. Louis Bach Festival 2019, held by the Bach Society of Saint Louis. Events from the end of April through mid-May afforded manifold ways to enjoy the maestro’s work. The festival opened with a gala at The St. Louis Woman’s Club in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. After enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, guests purchased raffle tickets and tickets to fabulous experiences before dinner, dessert and a program featuring a performance by the Big Muddy Dance Company and songs from the program “A Classical Cabaret.”

Johann Sebastian Bach is my favorite composer. And so I had heard about the Bach Society when I had just gotten my master’s degree here in St. Louis. I’d moved up from Alabama, and I had an audition – and I got in. And I’ve been playing for 30 years, and I just really love it. I love all its chorus and orchestra, and I love every chorus member. They’re good friends. We are also on the honorary board and have hosted a lot of gettogethers for Bach Society, and so it’s really a lot of fun for us to do that.

Design DESTINATION

TAHITI By Robyn Dexter This art piece doesn’t just scream retro tropics – it’s also printed on archival paper from an old textile drawing. Framed in wooden molding, the print captures all the different shades of green in the jungle and also begs to be lounged under with a mai tai. $4,495, available from Jonathan Adler (jonathanadler.com).

With a balmy average temperature of 79 degrees year-round, Tahiti has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists spanning the globe. The largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia, Tahiti was originally settled by Polynesians between A.D. 300 and 800. Today, its population is still largely Polynesian, with smaller percentages made up of Europeans and Chinese. Tahiti is a paradise of pristine waters and natural wonders formed by volcanoes long ago, drawing tourists in with her siren song all year – but especially around the Heiva i Tahiti festival in July. That festival celebrates traditional culture, music and sports, along with the world-famous Tahitian dance. Among Tahiti’s other wonders are the island’s unique and rare black pearls, which come from the Tahitian black lip oyster. Bring a little Tahitian magic into your abode with the tropical home décor pieces below.

This striking spiral twig mirror is a dramatic, wreathlike work of art. It’s deeply dimensional, and despite being constructed from metal with an aged gold finish, it feels natural and organic. In an entryway or over a console, this piece pops. $1,094, available from Ethan Allen (ethanallen.com).

An innovative roommate-centered service matches older householders with available space and responsible younger adults seeking affordable living.

2019 | LadueNews.com 2828   May may 31, 31, 2019 | LadueNews.com

O

n meeting them, you wouldn’t assume that Nagesh Khanvikar and sally lorino are roommates. The young, broadshouldered Khanvikar, a graduate student from india studying at Webster Groves’ Webster University, and lorino, a petite, retired associate dean of communications there, are certainly an unusual pair. Yet their arrangement, through Odd couples Housing, benefits each of them financially and has resulted in an unexpected friendship. Odd couples Housing, a unique new service, pairs older metro area homeowners who have space available with responsible younger adults who need affordable housing. Khanvikar and lorino are among the first matches made since the 2017 start of the program, which has performed 10 since then. However, interest is quickly increasing, says steve lilly, the company’s president and ceO. “Our target homeowners are empty nesters and active adults with an extra bedroom who are living independently in their homes,” lilly says. “Our target seekers include young adults either in graduate school or in the workforce searching for an alternative, more affordable form of housing. There is also a third group [who] have expressed great interest. They are the ‘gatekeepers,’ who may be children, friends or advisors of the homeowners that assist in the living decisions of the older adult group.” similar housing options have seen success across the country. This unique service provides homeowners some assistance with regular household chores and social connections through living with a younger adult. Meanwhile, the younger adult seekers benefit from an affordable housing option and building a new relationship with the homeowner. “every match is different, and the sharing of costs is customizable to fit the situation,” lilly says. “it’s really a win-win for both parties in the relationship.” Brian carpenter, an Odd couples Housing board member, is a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University in st. louis. He conducts research on the clinical psychology of aging. “[carpenter’s] research shows that our population is aging at a rapid pace, and most active adults prefer to remain living in their homes for as long as possible,” lilly says. “Odd couples Housing provides this group of adults with socialization and some additional cash to help with

expenses in the form of a younger adult housemate.” lorino learned about Odd couples Housing after a neighbor heard about the organization at a rotary club meeting. “Once i contacted Odd couples Housing, the process was easy,” she says. compatibility is the greatest concern for both parties, lilly says, adding, “This is addressed through the matching process and face-to-face meetings that we facilitate before a living agreement is established.” a matching algorithm, similar to those used for popular online dating sites, matches individuals who have similar personal preferences. The process is straightforward, according to lilly: “Once you sign up and create a profile, the website will suggest matches for you based on a compatibility score. You can then choose to match with someone, and if they choose you, there’s a ‘matchback.’ Finally, we help facilitate meetings and execution of a housemate agreement that both parties sign.” Your profile is meant to elicit the best-possible compatibility results. “People who sign up rate their own personality traits,” lilly says. “They also indicate specific preferences for a roommate, which guides them toward the ideal match. We also suggest background checks – we work with a national firm, or users may choose their own firm for this service.” Monthly expense-sharing amounts are recommended, but can vary for each situation. some homeowners agree to accept a lesser amount in exchange for specific household duties – such as cleaning or gardening, to be performed by the seeker – and all terms are detailed in the housemate agreement facilitated by Odd couples Housing. “The housing stock in st. louis is strong, and at the same time, there is a shortage of graduate school housing at many of the local universities,” lilly says. “in addition, many young adults new to the workforce have student debt, so they are always looking for affordable housing. With a surplus of nice housing available in this area, the matching of these groups of people seems to fill a need.” For lorino and Khanvikar, the benefit is much more than just extra cash in their wallets. “Nagesh and i started our relationship in November [2018] and have become good friends,” lorino says. Fresh might take you a moment to spot. The petite white storefront sits back from the street a little, making it tricky to see as you search for parking on Marshall Avenue in Webster Groves. Open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment, this unassuming storefront leads to one of the area’s newest vintage shops specializing in unique, high-quality home pieces – and it has been known to happen that a given piece sells from the store’s Instagram account in minutes. Ladue News caught up with the owner, Mark Bartels, to find out more about this vintage treasure trove. Tell us a bit about what you’re selling. What condition are you finding these pieces in, and what happens behind the scenes before they hit the floor? I specialize in unique midcentury-slash-vintage furniture, lighting, art and other household items. I like to find pieces that catch my eye and inspire me in some way. For me, I need to be able to visualize how the pieces I find could and will be used in other peoples’ homes. As an added challenge to myself, I’m always searching for items that are in great condition, as I have limited space to work on any items at the shop – though I also encourage others to remember that these are vintage pieces of furniture, and they will not be perfect. I feel that it is important to embrace the history that comes with each piece. Where do you find the vintage items you sell? Customers ask me that question all the time. Honestly, I am constantly on the hunt. I will sift through hundreds of pieces daily trying to find those few special ones that attract me. I find many of my items at estate sales, online, through auctions, garage sales, and sometimes, if I’m lucky, I have people just contact me looking to sell. Why vintage? Have you always been a midcentury modern fan? I have been attracted to midcentury furniture for a while now. That particular time period pushed the boundaries on what furniture could be, and I just connected with it. I grew up in a house filled with strange and unique items, many of which were of also high-end midcentury design. I have been fortunate to have a father who also has an eye for unique items and who appreciates excellent design and the effort that goes behind an item to make it so special. As I’ve grown older, I’ve taken what I’ve learned from my father and have been able to apply into a deeper love and appreciation of midcentury furniture and the designers behind the pieces. You opened in Webster last October. What has the response been like from locals?

I specialize in unique midcentury-slashvintage furniture, lighting, art and other household items. It has been an outstanding welcome! I have met so many kind and caring neighbors. I’m finding Webster Groves to be full of people who cherish the history of objects and who strive to embrace being unique. It’s a great match. Your store is a one-man show. How are you managing everything? I find the pieces, move, clean up, price, research, photograph, post, stage and manage the shop all on my own. It can be a lot at times, but I really don’t mind it – though my back may say differently at the end of the

day. Luckily, I also have a very supportive wife who has also helped me move her fair share of heavy furniture, as well. What were you doing before you opened the shop last year? Just last year, I was teaching math, science and social studies to third graders [at Central Christian School in Clayton]. I spent over 11 years in education and loved it. I left teaching not because of the lack of love for it, but because I needed to grow and challenge myself in new ways, as I always expected my own students to do the same. What can we expect next, as you continue to grow? I’m going to push Fresh in some new and fun ways going forward – and maybe eventually into a bigger building – but as of right now, I’m going to continue concentrating on being honest, fair and having a good time doing something that I love to do. I hope that my customers see that and enjoy coming in because of it.

An area artisanal bootmaker combines passion and expertise – and up to 50 hours of handcrafted labor per pair – to craft custom footwear. J.D. Gabbard, the mind and hands behind local bootmaker MYG HANDMADE, draws on seven years of experience honing his craft to create beautiful, handcrafted footwear using traditional shoe construction methods. Known simply as “Gabbard,” he puts approximately 40 to 50 hours into the construction of each pair of boots, all of which are custom-built and sized to exact dimensions – meaning customers have a wholly unique, made-to-measure “heirloom” pair of boots. “I’m always searching for a better method, and I’m always experimenting with new build techniques,” he says. Prior to launching his innovative one-man operation, Gabbard spent 12 years in Hong Kong, working the nightclub and entertainment industry before deciding to retire in 2010. He moved his family to Austin, Texas, where a work contact introduced him to Noel Escobar Jr., an enthusiastic boot-repair specialist and collector of custom cowboy boots. “After completing a few internal projects for Texas Custom Boots, [Escobar] found himself a man short one day and asked me to help out on the finishing line – that’s the machine that does all the sanding, buffing and polishing of shoes and boots,” Gabbard says. “We stood side by side for 10 hours to catch up on a large boot order, and by the end of the day, I realized I had just learned a new skill. After, we shared a few cold beers, and he offered me a job.” Throughout the next two years, Gabbard worked with Escobar at Texas Custom Boots and Lee Miller at Texas Traditions, learning from master cobblers and

master bootmakers how to repair and replace welts and soles and to stitch leather rips into, as he puts it, “commercially manufactured and bespoke custom cowboy boots, ranging in price from $500 to $5,000 each.” After working 12 hours a day for two years, he knew it was time to branch out on his own. “I felt I had learned enough to get started on the basics of designing and handbuilding my own service-type boots,” he says. “Notice I use the word basics – it takes a lifetime to achieve the skills of near-perfection when working with your hands and applying European- and Japanese-influenced shoemaking traditions to your work.” According to Gabbard, the true foundation of MYG is heavily influenced by America’s 1940s workforce lifestyle. He points out that the footwear in this era was known for its ability to overcome tough conditions. Gabbard embraces that same approach in his products, with an emphasis on durable construction materials – think hand-cut leather and hand-stitched tops – that are known to stand up to the test of time, whether for work, everyday wear or dresswear. Styles range widely, as do prices. A single pair can cost anywhere from $750 to $1,300, and once customers select their preferred style from the 15 different varieties – and four different styles for women, constructed with higher arches and slimmer widths – they speak with Gabbard over the phone to discuss the order and make modifications to fit their preferences. Boot styles include everything from mid- and high-top to knee-length, each seemingly with its own detailed backstory and inspiration dating back to midcentury American culture. “Most of my clients have had some experience with bespoke and custom footwear, so they know what’s needed and are happy just to chat about the craftsmanship technique of the build,” says Gabbard of the relationship he shares with his customers. After the initial discussion, another call is made to discuss foot measurements, which include both length and width, but Gabbard suggests clients have their feet

31, 2019 | LadueNews.com 3838   May may 31, 2019 | LadueNews.com

measured with a Brannock device (used in shoe stores) and view the instructional video from the website prior to the first phone chat. “This is required so the client can perform the foot tracings and measurements themselves, or I walk them through the measurements process via a Skype chat,” he says. “The second call is after I receive their foot tracings at the shop to review and update any technical info that might be needed prior to the build, such as foot issues or orthopedic insoles.” Says Gabbard of his most popular styles, “The Nail Shank boot is absolutely the most unique build to date, and the Black Maria is picking up steam.” The former is a more rugged-looking boot with dark walnut tones, while the latter, as its name suggests, is black and sharp, easily something that can be worn with dressier outfits. Because MYG is a one-man operation and because each boot requires painstaking attention to even the smallest detail, the entire process takes about two to three months from start to finish, with only about 50 pairs produced each year. However, the difference between store-bought and handmade is astounding, and Gabbard notes that his clients are very patient about the length of time needed. “MYG HANDMADE boots are built for clients who require and have a special interest in traditionally crafted shoemaking techniques, who are looking for something different than shelf-bought footwear and who appreciate a perfectfitting boot. My [clients] always tell me there is no comparison to quality.” MYG’s products are both beautiful and practical – making them perfect investments for the here and now and beyond. “I think being able to pass along a pair of MYG boots or a watch or a pair of American-made selvage denim to my daughter and possibly to her future kinfolk is magical,” he says. “The stories that are shared along with the heirloom itself bring and keep family tradition alive.” MYG HANDMADE, myghandmade.com

Résumé Strategies

A

résumé is one of the most difficult documents to write. It’s personal and public. We’re putting ourselves out there, and something big is at stake – employment. Confusing information clouds the internet. And while hundreds of résumé templates are available online, many are easily recognizable, turning what you think is extraordinary into the very ordinary. So let’s boil down strategy. The goal of a résumé is to show a potential employer what you have accomplished and what you can bring to the organization. All the while, this must be done in an easy-to-read, compact format and hopefully also align with the exact job opening you are applying for. That’s it. Push all other concerns aside. Countless clients come to me so bogged down with worries they can hardly focus on the main topic anymore. Am I good enough? Do I have enough? Am I too old? Too young? How do I still sound relevant? How do I show experience when I don’t have any yet? What is the “right” thing to say the “right” way? All are legitimate concerns we address to clear the logjam causing procrastination, your worst enemy. I recall the following distressing interchange with a

that can be highlighted on your résumé. What results – preferably quantifiable – did you or your team produce while employed or in college? These can be great bullet points. (Remember, “employment” is different from “experience.”) Then we write tight, eliminating needless words and power-packing facts into your best, most honest one-page story. Done. When you read it with your name at the top, in big, bold type, guess what? You feel better. Empowered. Confident. People who slay the dragon of the résumé like that, coupled with a solid cover letter that shows personality with informed understanding of a company’s goals, ultimately get the jobs they want. Of course, it is important to map and practice a series of interviews in advance in order to be prepared for that process as well, but the résumé comes first as the possible entry to the door. Open it.

What is different is, we do offer free delivery of prescriptions to all patients. – Arthur Krichevsky

44   May 31, 2019 | LadueNews.com

University City’s Kismet Pharmacy & General Store wants to be customers’ one-stop wellness shop.

A

t Kismet Pharmacy & General Store, everybody knows your name. Hearkening back to the days of the friendly neighborhood corner store, Kismet is a modern twist on the old-world apothecary. “The customers know me by name, and I also know them,” says Arthur Krichevsky, owner and pharmacist. “We’re situated in a neighborhood, and children come by after school and buy candy, and people walk by with their dog and stop in to get a drink. People miss being able to enjoy going out for a walk and dropping in and having that communal interaction.” The full-service pharmacy and general store, which opened in February at 941 Midland Blvd. near the corner of Midland Boulevard and Balson Avenue in University City, aims to be customers’ one-stop shop for prescription filling and consulting, as well as locally made offerings, from unique snacks and beverages to natural household cleaning products and beauty supplies. With its personal touch to customer service, Kismet is decidedly different from its corporate pharmaceutical counterparts. “What is different is, we do offer free delivery of prescriptions to all patients,” Krichevsky says, adding that Kismet provides prescription management and automatic refills, and accepts Medicaid, Medicare and most insurance plans like a traditional pharmacy. “We also offer clinical and informative on-the-spot health and wellness consulting. We’re easy to access with a short wait, and if it does take longer because of insurance, for instance, we offer to deliver the prescription to you, so you don’t have to wait. We’ll even come to you for your flu shot.” Krichevsky, a St. Louis native, comes from a family of small-business owners. “My grandmother owned a tailor shop in Rock Hill, my mom has a tailor shop in Chesterfield Valley, and my father has an upholstery shop in Ballwin,” he says. So after Krichevsky graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and worked in hospital and mail-order pharmacy settings, the idea of running his own small business was appealing. “It’s really limited in diversity among today’s [large retailer] pharmacies,” Krichevsky says, adding that he wanted to give customers the personal experience of a neighborhood pharmacy and general store. And it was kismet – hence the pharmacy’s name – that University City became the home of Krichevsky’s small business. “[Kismet] is an old word – thousands of years old – it nowadays means ‘fate’ or ‘destiny,’ and that felt like a notion that came up many times as we began to open the pharmacy,” Krichevsky says, adding that the timing and steps toward building the business fell perfectly into place. “[University City] also is the first place my great-grandparents landed from the Soviet Union. It’s a small, tight community that is local and small-business-oriented, and with the

products we have and the way we want to serve the community, it seemed like the community would embrace us.” Situated in a brick building that once housed K. Hall Designs and Barr Co., Kismet was redesigned from top to bottom by Krichevsky’s wife, Channing, an interior designer with C&M Interiors. The renovation included removing walls to achieve an open, airy space and adding new wood flooring and cabinetry. A blend of classical and contemporary components, the reimagined space glows with white and French blue-gray paint, chrome fixtures and clean lines, as well as built-in wooden shelving and countertops. “We wanted to be in University City, and this was a really interesting building,” Krichevsky says. “We split the building into two units, and Channing’s design firm is in the other half.” Led by Krichevsky, Kismet’s staff includes a part-time pharmacist, Yang Pan – who also graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy – and four employees to assist in-store customers and make deliveries. Kismet’s staff is getting to know its customers and surrounding community by visiting local retirement homes to host activities, such as bingo games, and hold pharmacy question-and-answer sessions. Krichevsky encourages the community to stop into Kismet, where he says you always can find something new. Among the store’s locally sourced inventory of gourmet snacks and drinks are Billy Goat Chip Co. handcrafted potato chips, Halo + Cleaver barbecue sauces, Made Fare Co. “grown-up granola” and Park Avenue Coffee. In addition, it stocks locally made Better Life natural cleaning products, as well as a variety of cannabidiol (or CBD, a chemical compound in cannabis plants) natural pain-relief oils. Kismet’s intimate setting allows employees to get to know customers on a more personal level. “Everyone seems excited to have a local corner store that they can visit and appreciate,” Krichevsky says. “They can walk over anytime and take their time browsing and talking with us.”

To transfer prescriptions to Kismet, customers can fill out a form on the pharmacy’s website, or call or text 314-390-1616. Along with free delivery, the pharmacy offers transferring clients a $5 gift card to its store on the first fill, as well as free monthly multivitamins. Referring a friend or family member also earns the customer another $5 gift card. Kismet Pharmacy & General Store, 941 Midland Blvd., University City, 314-390-1616, kismetstl.com

It will represent the conference at the NCAA Regionals. Thomas, a junior and a Marquette High School graduate, tied for 17th place, with a 227 on rounds of 75, 79 and 73. Although predominantly right-handed, Thomas golfs left-handed. This season, he’s averaging 73.4, the best in his career, and for the Salukis, he’s had one top five finish and one top 10 finish.

For the third straight season, the team has earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 2019 Central/Midwest Regional will take place at Hot Springs Country Club on the Arlington course in Arkansas. Maryville previously earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, 2007 and 2009 during the Division III era and in 2017 and 2018. Max Kreikemeier and John Guerra, two younger golfers from here, recently represented the area in high-profile competitions. Kreikemeier, a Lafayette High School senior, played in the ninth Junior Invitational late in April at Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, South Carolina. In his 2018 summer season, Kreikemeier captured the Nike Junior Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma, giving him an exemption to play in the Graniteville invitational. He calls Sage Valley’s setup, played at roughly 7,500 yards, “very difficult.” “The fairways were very soft, so it was all about carry distance,” Kreikemeier says. “The greens were also very firm and undulated, and were running at about a 12 on the stimpmeter. I had a lot of long irons into the greens, so it was very difficult to get it close.” He finished tied for 47th, with a 236 on rounds of 78-78-80. “I am a little disappointed with the number I posted, but not my overall play,” Kreikemeier (who made three birdies – one in each round) says. “I thought I played well, but just really did not get many breaks or putts to fall, and as I said before, the golf course was just flat-out difficult.” He continues: “I would say the highlight of all my rounds was my short game. Since it was difficult to hold the greens, I had to grind to get up and down a lot. My chipping was very good for all three days.” One highlight for Kreikemeier involved meeting PGA Tour star Rory McIllory. “He did a clinic and Q&A with us,” Kreikemeier says. “It was very interesting to hear about his daily routine and what he works on the most and how much thought he puts into every golf shot.” Meanwhile, 13-year-old St. Louisan Guerra took part in the annual Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals held early last month prior to the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Guerra, who plays at Ladue’s Old Warson Country Club, won his regional at Town and Country’s Bellerive Country Club by just a single point and medaled in chipping. He qualified with 130 points at a local qualifier at The Legends Country Club in Eureka. Guerra followed that with 124 points at a subregional at Fox Run Golf Club, also in Eureka, before tallying 132 points at a regional qualifier at Bellerive. The sixth Gateway PGA representative at the Drive, Chip & Putt finals, Guerra started playing golf in kindergarten. He had Brandon Smith, a PGA professional at Old Warson, as his first instructor and now works with Bryan McMurray, the PGA professional at Augusta’s Boone Valley Golf Club.

says. “It’s wonderful food and a great product. We do our best to ensure everything is completely first-rate and incredible quality with attention to detail. That’s what we’re after.” Filling the previous space of SanSai Japanese Grill, Firenza Pizza can accommodate up to 50 guests in the 3,100-square-foot dining room, with additional patio seating. St. Louis’ Mademan Design served as the architect for renovations, creating a modern industrial interior that features Firenza’s signature red-and-black color scheme. As the centerpiece of the open kitchen, a live-flame oven bakes pies in just three minutes at roughly 770 degrees. The house pizza dough is made with 00 flour imported from Italy, resulting in a delectable combination of a crisp edge with an airy interior. The

house pizza sauce is made from vine-ripened Northern California tomatoes. From the menu, guests can choose from six signature pizzas or can build their own pie; options are available in 10- or 14-inch sizes. Highlights include chipotle chicken with chipotle sauce, mozzarella, chicken, crema, chipotle dressing and fresh pico de gallo. Another popular pick, the Firenza, contains marinara sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage crumbles, artichoke hearts, red onions, mixed peppers and minced garlic. Signature salads include such options as a Greek salad with mixed greens, chicken, tomatoes, feta, Kalamata olives, cucumbers, banana peppers, Greek dressing and croutons. And guests shouldn’t forget oven-baked wings, another menu mainstay, which

ith summer approaching, Webster Groves’ Firenza Pizza and its sweet counterpart, Ziggy’s Frozen Treats, make one of the metro area’s best spots to enjoy casual, familyfriendly Italian fare (including gelato). The tandem establishment, which debuted in January, comes from Firenza Pizza franchisees Steve and Darah Imrie. The Webster Groves operation represents the 25th from the Fairfax, Virginia-based chain – just the second in Missouri, after Kansas City. However, Ziggy’s Frozen Treats remains unique to the local location, with a separate counter at the back of the dining room, as well as an outdoor walk-up window for warm-weather service. “The tagline is ‘Pizza like never before,’” Steve Imrie

come in such flavors as chipotle-lime rub, barbecuestyle and Buffalo-style. Drink options abound, with fountain beverages, fresh-brewed Texas tea, three beers on draft (as well as offerings by the can and bottle) and wine by the glass. Desserts include oven-baked cookies and gooey butter cake. For cold treats, though, guests should head to Ziggy’s for gelato, frozen custard, sundaes and shakes. All things considered, Firenza Pizza and Ziggy’s Frozen Treats make a perfect pair for delicious food and decadent desserts, preferably on the patio in sultry spring weather, before catching Nina Simone: Four Women from The St. Louis Black Repertory. “We’ve learned a lot, and I’m sure we have much more to learn,” Imrie concludes. “All that being said, it’s an honor to be in this town. Webster Groves is such a warm and friendly community. We’re just so lucky to be here.”

Firenza Pizza/Ziggy’s Frozen Treats, 20 Allen Ave.,

‌Story:  Singer/songwriter Nina Simone, née Eunice Kathleen Waymon of Tryon, North Carolina, pays a visit to the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, the day after a bomb decimates the holy building, killing four young black girls who were attending services there on Sept. 15, 1963. Sitting at a piano amid the ruins, Nina thinks about composing a song to reflect her anger and grief over these senseless deaths in the middle of the civil rights movement. Sarah, a member of the church, stops by on her way to work to view the wreckage and notices Nina there. The two are decidedly different, both in appearance and education, and yet they share striking similarities. As black women, they have suffered injustices their entire lives, just as their mothers and grandmothers before them. Nina is a self-described “classical musician,” an artist who enrolled in the famous Julliard School of Music in New York City. Sarah, on the other hand, works two menial jobs to help support her husband and their children. She objects to Nina taking the Lord’s name in vain and considers the outsider “a peculiar lady,” yet the two share much in common. Eventually, they’re joined by Sephronia, a mixedrace young woman derisively referred to as “high yellow” because of her mixed ancestry and light skin color. She’s been in a quarrel with Sweet Thing, a local prostitute who claims to be pregnant with Sephronia’s boyfriend’s baby. Nina is one of four black women who find themselves drawn together in hellish circumstances. The gifted musical artist exhorts all of them to fight for their rights as she uses her own talents to express her growing activism in the civil rights movement and to demand equality long overdue. Highlights:  Christina Ham’s powerful and moving drama with music brings The St. Louis Black Repertory’s 2018-19 season to a glorious close in an excellent production helmed by Black Rep producer/ director Ron Himes. Other Info:  Ham expertly weaves several Simone anthems throughout this two-act, two-hour presentation, admittedly using dramatic license to include numbers such as “Old Jim Crow” and “Sinnerman” along with “Mississippi Goddam,” the only tune written at about the same time as the church bombing. Ham sets up her riveting story in segments labeled “Overture,” “Verse 1,” “Verse 2,” “Chorus” and “Bridge,” with long periods of dialogue between soulful renditions of standards written by her and others. Tim Jones presents a powerful scenic design, with broken windows on the back wall and debris littering

the floor of the Edison Theatre stage to represent the aftermath of the fateful bombing. The bombing itself is rendered especially scary thanks to Sean Savoie’s pyrotechnic lighting and the explosive sound design provided by Justin Schmitz. Musical director Charles Creath is seated near the rear of stage right to provide smooth, persuasive piano accompaniment to the powerful voices of the performers, who convincingly shape Simone’s anthems with soulful interpretation. Heather Beal’s choreography especially accentuates the ensemble’s efforts on the “Shout: Oh Mary” number composed by Ham herself, a woman whose family actually attended services at the 16th Street Baptist Church. Leah Stewart packs a convincing wallop as the fiery and determined Nina, committed to social justice and using her natural musical gifts as her weapons of choice. She opens the show with a well-honed rendering of Simone’s familiar hit, “I Loves You, Porgy,” then propels the drama with a soaring version of Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam” protest tune. Alex Jay does a fine job depicting Sephronia, antagonized not only by the white majority but also by blacks suspicious of her skin color, adding luster to the women’s presentation of “Sinnerman.” Camile Sharp shows the sassy, defiant edges of Sweet Thing, joining the others in an unlikely display of unity for several numbers in the second act, including “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” and the “Four Women” concluding piece. Ham’s moving drama taps into Simone’s rich musical legacy to underscore the artist’s lifelong commitment to social justice in a deeply satisfying fashion.

The Beirut-based artist, with just three others, was shortlisted for that honor on May 1; the announcement of the winner will come this December. Abu Hamdan’s exhibition at the museum includes a medley of things at once quotidian and bizarre: a gray plastic children’s wading pool; tandem three-stepped wooden stairways, one half carpeted, the other not; a collection of footwear of diverse types. Al-Khudhairi has been tracking both Sepuya’s and Abu Hamdan’s works for some time and takes pride in both exhibitions. “‘Earwitness Theatre’ has received phenomenal responses critically and from audiences at both of its stops in London and Rotterdam,” she says. “After CAM, it moves on to Brisbane. We’re the only U.S. venue for the exhibition. He’s an artist that I think St. Louis will be fascinated with, as his work brings up many issues with regard to human rights, the politics of listening and of witness.” Al-Khudhairi likewise reflects on the degree to which Abu Hamdan’s exhibition, with its concern for the aforementioned politics of listening, arrives at an ironic time, when no one seems to be attending to anyone else and once quite private telephone conversations blithely take place in quite public locations. “A politics of listening does imply an antidote to the politics of shouting,” she says. “For Lawrence, he’s investigating how people’s rights are made silent, and he demonstrates how those rights may be heard.” Further, Al-Khudhairi helpfully One view of Lawrence abu Hamdan’s “Earwitness Theatre.” sketches what, exactly, constitutes the presentation of Abu Hamdan’s work as a “private ear” (a puckish phrase used in the official Turner Prize necessarily in an era of selfies and societal voyeurism). announcement). “With Paul Mpagi Sepuya, we embraced the opportunity to present “A soundproofed, darkened booth will contain the work Saydnaya the first museum survey of his work,” explains Wassan Al-Khudhairi, (the missing 19db),” she says. “This is an intense sonic experience the museum’s chief curator. “Because he’s worked with many of the constructed of whispers, test tones and silences.
