Exercisedoesn’thavetobeboring–that’sthemotto atBumbershootAerialArts,anyway.Instead ofwalkingonthetreadmillorclimbingthe Stairmaster,studentsatBumbershootswingand twistthroughtheairwithsilksriggedfromthe ceiling.“Lifeisshort,andIwantittobeinteresting,”owner JoellePendergrasssays.

TeachingissomewhatofasecondnaturetoPendergrass; astheoldestdaughterinabigfamily,shegrewupteachingher youngersiblingshowtodoaerialartthemselves.Herfamily wouldoftenperformcircusshowsatfairsandfestivals.“In myfamily,whateveroneofusgotinto,everybodyelselearned too,”sheexplains.“Mydadtookupjuggling,sowealltookup juggling.Mybrothertookuptheunicycle,sowealltookupthe unicycle.Gymnasticswasmything.”

Whilestillinhighschool,Pendergrassstartedteachingfora localcircuscompanyinexchangeforaerialartstraining.Soon shewasteachingbeginner-levelaerialclasseswhilecontinuing toadvanceherownskills.“I’mjustusedtomakingorderoutof chaos,”sheadds.

Pendergrassalwaysdreamedofstartingupherownaerial artspracticeinSt.LouisandopenedBumbershootin2009. Whileshestillteachessomechildrenandteenclasses,she mainlywantedBumbershoottobeaccessibleforaverageadults toexperienceaphysical,creativeandtherapeuticoutlet.

Aerialarthelpsbuildupperbodyandcorestrength–an areathatcansometimesbehardforwomen(Bumbershoot’s mainstudentbase)tobuildup.Butitalsooccupiesthecreative sideofyourbrain:Insteadofthinkingaboutbuildingupa specificmusclegroup,Pendergrasssaysthefocusismoreon nailinganawesometrick.“Itkeepsyouengagedinadifferent waythanjustgoingtothegym,”shesays.“It’ssorewarding whenyoubecomethatgirlwhocandopull-ups.It’ssatisfying andempoweringforwomentobecomeandknowthattheyare strong,especiallywiththeirupperbody.”

FromFriday,June9toSaturday,July 29,TheKranzbergArtsFoundation willpresentasoloexhibitionby residentvisualartistVincent Stemmler.Stemmler’sexhibition,aptlytitled “DoomScroll,”exploresthemesofpersonal identityandcollectivememorythrough experimentationwiththephysicalenvironment andsocio-economiclandscape.

“Ititledtheshow‘DoomScroll’torepresent howsocialmediamakesusawareofthings thatarehappeningintheworldbutalsomakes uslosesomeformofpresenceatthesame time,”Stemmlersays.“Alotofthisshowreally focusesonwhat’shidingbehindtheideaof somethingelse.”

Stemmlerexperimentswithconceptsof coexistingelementsthroughoutmanyofthe piecesin“DoomScroll.”Onework,“AConfluence OverTime,”toyswithjuxtaposingideasof thepersonalandthecollective;thepastand present;andhistoryandmemory.Stemmler originallybeganworkingonthepiecewiththe intentiontocapturephotographspersonalto hisownexperiencesbutexpandedhisapproach afterrealizingtheenvironmenthe’dcaptured representedastorybiggerthanhimself.“My originalpitchwastophotographplacesthat werespecialtomeandexpresssomeformofan ideathatIhadaboutthatplace,”heexplains. “ThatstartedtochangewhenInoticedalot ofthespacesIwasphotographingwerealso publicspaces.”

In“AConfluenceOverTime,”Stemmler chosetodigitallymanipulatephotographsof theconfluenceinSt.Louisandprintedout severalversionsofthepicturestocollagethem together.Buthedidn’tstopthere,bringingin actualobjectsandmaterialsfromon-sitesuch asseeds,trashandothermiscellaneousobjects tofullycapturehowbeautyanddestructionboth existinthelandscape.“Thepiecereallybecame abouttheenvironment,”Stemmleradds.“We oftenromanticizelandscapeart,wheninreality we’reatthispointintimewherewhereveryou

go,you’regoingtoseetrash.”

ManyofthepiecesStemmlercreates in“DoomScroll”combinephotos,raw materialsandarchitecturalfragmentsfrom placesaroundSt.Louisandaroundthe world.Anotherwork,“FalseMemoriesat theFuneraryChapel,”revisitsStemmler’s childhoodmemoriesofafountainbasin fromhismother’sfuneral,whichhelater discoverstobeinaccurate.“WhenIvisited thefuneralhomeagain,Irealizedthatasa childI’denvisionedatreeandbirdssticking outofthebasinthatwasn’treallythere,” heexplains.“Thefuneraldirectorsaidhe’d workedtherefor30yearsandhe’dneverseen whatIdescribeditlookinglike.I’dcreatedthis wholefalsenarrativeasacopingmechanism.

ThefalsememoriesIhadservedasasortof resilience,andthat’swhatItriedtocapturein thispiece.”

Oneofthemostimpressiveaspectsof Stemmler’sworkishisabilitytoweavetogether variousartformsintoamulti-layeredcohesive piece.Theexhibitioniscomprisedofpaintings, collages,videoart,sculpturesandphotographs thatseamlesslyblendtogetherandspeaktoboth personalidentityandsubjectsofthelargerworld. “I’mfromChicagoandreallymissedItalian beefsandwiches.That’swhyIdecidedto servethem,”Roossays.“Iknowthatthereare alotofChicagoex-patsthatlivedownhere, andprovidingthemwithagoodItalianbeef wasbasicallymymaingoal–ahomeaway fromhome.”

RoosprepareshisItalianbeefbyslow cookingchuckinninedifferentspicesatalow temperatureforseveralhours.

“We’reofferingChicago-styleItalianbeef sandwichesfullyloaded–ahotgiardinieraand asweetstyle,”Roossays.“Forthefullexperience, thesandwichcomesfullydippedinjusthatruns downyourarmasyoueatit,whichalotofpeople inSt.Louisdon’tknow.”
