Juneteenth is officially on June 19, but celebrations begin this weekend. Contributing writer Drew Gieseke delves into the history of the holiday and various ways of honoring it in the metro area, starting on Page 60. Discover how St. Louis-based nonprofit The FAM aims to address the impact of race-based housing discrimination. For this feature, which starts on Page 37, I talked with the organization’s founders and a beneficiary about the results of its first year in operation. On Page 20, learn about how SSM Health Women’s Health initiatives are expanding, as digital editor and staff writer Amanda Dahl reports, with support from a pair of philanthropic siblings. Whether in the pages of this issue or in the online version of the magazine, I hope you’ll find reasons to be hopeful for your community and note the ways to support causes you care about. The One Sale expands on that relaxed atmosphere by having live music and drinks on Saturday June 25, while shoppers enjoy the wide array of inventory available at any price point. “You just can’t compete with the amount of inventory we have,” Kelly says. “We design jewelry every day and are buying regularly, and between that, I’d be shocked if someone came in and we didn’t have what they loved.” From stylish paper clip necklaces to curb chain necklaces fitted with pavé diamonds – or a custom piece designed and manufactured in-house – Genovese Jewelers will give you both unparalleled selection and an unmatched jewelry-buying experience this summer. KIDS MD

Talking About Puberty By Dr. Joseph Kahn

P

uberty is a time of major change for adolescents and often a time of confusion and “cringeworthy” (as my grandkids would say) conversations. Parents can be instrumental in helping kids cope with the transformation – but make sure you’re prepared for real questions. Rather than sitting down for “the talk” or, as my mother did, giving your child a book to read and never discussing puberty again, plan to have a series of conversations. Find out what your children know about the changes they’re experiencing, and then educate them with facts. Explain bodily changes as your child notices them, and prepare them for the next change coming. Puberty begins at different ages for everyone, though usually between the ages of 8 and 12 for girls and a year or two later for boys. At these ages, hormones from the brain stimulate the ovaries in girls or testicles in boys to release estrogen or testosterone, and hormones from the adrenal glands stimulate changes such as hair growth.

For girls, the progression of puberty usually begins with breast development and the growth of pubic hair, followed a year or two later by a growth spurt and changes in body shape. Most girls complete puberty and begin to menstruate by age 16, give or take. Boys typically begin puberty between ages 10 and 16. Two issues unique to boys are gynecomastia, or mild swelling and tenderness under the breasts that usually resolves within six to 12 months, and nocturnal emission, often referred to as “wet dreams” – both of which are to be expected and completely normal. It can be helpful to begin conversations about these issues earlier than the changes begin so kids feel comfortable asking questions. Ask your kids what they know and believe is going on. You need to understand any information or misinformation they have. Give factual explanations of the changes they will experience. Encourage your children not to compare themselves with others. Different adolescents

develop at different stages, often related to genetics and timing of their parents’ own puberty cycles, but everybody gets there eventually. Some common topics to discuss are things that can easily be addressed, such as acne and hygiene. If acne is an issue, address it with over-the-counter remedies and diet changes. If those fail, discuss it with your child’s doctor. Finally, emphasize the importance of good bodily hygiene and the use of deodorant. Body odor, like everything else about puberty, can be managed by educating kids on how to prevent it. For more information or to find a pediatrician near you, visit mercy.net/laduenews.

avid Brown, a three-time Paralympian in track and field who brought home a gold medal from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, is taking to a new field as a soccer player and ambassador for the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes. “It’s a great honor to be looked at as a leader in any sort of sport,” Brown says. “It is a lot of responsibility. And to be looked at as a leader in a sport I honestly don’t have too much experience in? It’s very humbling.” Brown, who hails from the St. Louis metro area, is the world’s fastest blind runner and says transitioning to the soccer pitch is comparable to his training for track and field, in which he still competes. “All that I needed … was just time on the ball and time around my teammates [for] learning different tactics,” he says. “Considering the fact that we’re playing on a smaller field, there’s a lot more contact involved. So the conditioning and running and being able to handle all that impact is very vital.” Brown, who was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old and with glaucoma at age 3, began losing his sight after related surgeries. His left eye shrank in his socket, and he now wears a prosthetic. By age 6, his right eye gradually began to lose vision. “That was a devastating time period for me,” he recalls. “I got left with limited sight and sense of light perception, shapes, shadows and colors. My vision is very hazy.” Brown’s right eye still experiences high eye pressure, which can lead to excruciating migraine-like pains, he says. The world champion adds that his drive even as a kid has gotten him through tough times. “I found different ways to adapt to my situation,” Brown says. “I was just trying to stay

involved and be active. I did not let [my limited sight] deter me from being a kid.” Blind soccer is the fastestgrowing Paralympic sport in the world, according to the USABA website. In his role as ambassador, Brown advocates for fellow players on the unique challenges they face. “You’ve got coaches that are yelling from the sideboards, you’ve got goalies that are yelling from behind, as well as in front of the goals, and you’ve got your teammates yelling at you,” Brown says. “It’s a lot of things going on while [you’re] trying to focus on where the ball is … and making sure you’re in the right place at the right time.” Already, he’s been collaborating with the coaches on how to improve communication during games. It seems leading the way is where Brown always has strived and always will thrive.

SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS By Drew Gieseke | Photos courtesy of Missouri Green Schools

ach year, the U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools, school districts and institutions of higher education for promoting sustainability practices on campus and in lesson plans. Honorees receive the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognition award, District Sustainability Award and Postsecondary Sustainability Award in their respective categories. Two metro area institutions were so recognized in 2022: Town and Country’s Principia School, which was named a 2022 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, and the University City School District, which was named a 2022 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Awardee. “These schools that make the Green Ribbon really catalyze and inspire other schools,” says Lesli Moylan, executive director at the Missouri Environmental Education Association. “Schools at that level are able to mentor other schools just joining the program.” That association connects and supports educators in the state and oversees the Missouri Green Schools program, which provides schools

and school districts with the tools and resources necessary to set and track environmental, health and sustainability education goals. Moylan and her team comanage this program with the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter. This mission also includes working with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to review Green Ribbon Schools’ nomination packages. Principia and U City’s school district were clear standouts in 2022. “Principia has done a ton for energy efficiency,” says Moylan of the independent college prep school. “They’ve also created student-led affinity groups to really support kids’ belonging and safety. You can’t achieve academically if you don’t feel safe.” In addition, Principia’s students and faculty recently restored 42 acres of forest and 6 acres of savanna, creating a biodiverse “island” accessible to students. Teachers use this outdoor space during lessons on science, social studies, language arts and math. Twenty minutes away, U City’s school district transformed its own facilities and approach to education in recent years. Led by its superintendent, Dr. Sharonica Hardin-Bartley, the

district constructed multiple elementary schools certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines, 25 solar panels and 49,000 square feet of rain gardens for water conservation. Every school campus includes outdoor labs devoted to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) for multidisciplinary use, and the district also adopted the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model, which monitors and promotes environmental, medical and mental health, as well as racial equity. “She’s just an awesome, unflinching advocate for racial equity in her schools,” Moylan says of Hardin-Bartley. “The work that they’re doing that led to this award has really flowed from this commitment to students’ joy and well-being.” From coast to coast, 27 schools, five school districts and four postsecondary institutions were honored for their efforts. Selected schools, school districts and institutions of higher education will be celebrated in Washington, D.C., during a ceremony this fall.

edric Kyles, also known as Cedric the Entertainer, and his sister Sharita Kyles Wilson, a professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, came back to their hometown of St. Louis to support SSM Health Women’s Health initiatives – a cause they have been supporting for nearly 10 years. Kyles took a break this spring from his hectic schedule as an actor, comedian and content creator to announce a lead gift of $25,000 at a private event launching the new fundraising campaign, which expands perinatal behavioral health care resources to women throughout Missouri, including in rural areas, and serves to increase women’s attentiveness to their own health care needs. SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital provided cancer care to the late Rosetta Boyce Kyles, mother to Kyles and Kyles Wilson – for whom the Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion and an education center at St. Mary’s are named. “The women’s pavilion is designed to provide health care needs specifically for women, from OB-GYN all the way through geriatrics and everything in between that meets the needs that

women have,” Kyles Wilson says. “It’s a place that you will be able to find the resources that you need and … the compassion that is so important when you’re dealing with a health care crisis.” The siblings are devoting their energies to improving health care for women in the area because the one who raised them always devoted herself to others, Kyles Wilson expresses. “[My mom] left an indelible impression on me because of her faith and her work ethic,” she says. “She was a woman of great faith. … Also, she worked tirelessly as an educator. She was passionate about the work that she did, and I think that she truly led by example for Cedric and I to keep the faith and keep working hard.” Her brother also carries his mother’s legacy with him. “She always used to say, ‘Your good name walks in the room before you do, and it stays long after you’re gone,’” he says. “It’s something that I think is very important … to apply to not just your credit report, but also recognize that in life.” To date, $1.9 million has been raised in support of SSM Health Women’s Health patientcentered programs, impacting women and their

families from all walks of life. “SSM Health has been around for nearly 150 years, providing services to the community, and it’s an anchor institution for St. Louis and the Midwest,” says Paul Ross, president of SSM Health Foundation – St. Louis. “There’s passion, there’s purpose and there’s impact. All of those things are combined here to really make a difference for women, women’s health and our community.” Kyles and Kyles Wilson have asked supporters to join them in a campaign match, with online donations being accepted at givetossmhealth. org/womens-health. As part of the new initiative, donations will help to fund a nurse-navigator service, improved telehealth services and educational resources for women experiencing perinatal behavioral health needs. “Not only do I represent St. Louis but I also represent Caruthersville, Missouri, which is in the Bootheel of the state, where we grew up [during] the early part of our lives,” Kyles says. “These areas don’t have readiness to doctors and hospitals and specialists. Now, with the technology and the money that we donate, we have the opportunity for mobile health units to [be set up].”

The siblings, whose jovial camaraderie shines through in interviews, always come back to the same leading charge from their mother. Kyles Wilson shares: “One of the things that my mother used to always say to us is to go forth and – ” “Do great things,” Kyles finishes, with a nod of encouragement for others to do the same. Kyles can be seen performing in and producing “The Neighborhood,” now in its fourth season on CBS, for which he recently put on his director’s hat for an episode. He also produces “Johnson” and “Finding Happy” for Bounce TV, the latter of which is the brainchild of Kyles’ former assistant. Expect more movies and digital content from Kyles’ production company, A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, to come out in the near future, he says. t’s important to keep future generations in mind in your financial planning, and there’s no better way than to work with a multigenerational team of financial advisors. Plaza Advisory Group, affiliated with Steward Partners, understands the importance of planning for a family’s future and works with clients on creating organized and functional plans for multiple generations to come. “One of the most common needs is to ensure clients’ financial assets are organized and titled correctly before something happens,” says Martha Guyer, Wealth Manager. “We do that by engaging with our clients’ estate and tax planning professionals early which allows us to be an integral part of legacy planning.” Guyer adds that this can carry over to generations that may not exist yet – such as paying for the college tuition of future grandchildren or funding another multigenerational goal. Plaza takes into account what its clients want for the future and helps ensure that things will go as they planned. Plaza Advisory Group holds its clients’ interests at heart in all things, including how much they do or do not want to share with their family regarding their financial plans. Often, clients’ planning needs extend beyond basic estate and tax planning. “Some of our clients include business owners and succession planning is important to facilitate a smooth transition when the next generation takes over,” adds Corey P. Briggs, CFP®, CIMA®, Wealth Manager. “There are a lot of areas in which we can help family-owned businesses. Some examples include establishing retirement plans, risk management for key employees, facilitating discussions between their accounting firm, attorney, and next generation, and simplify finding thirdparty business appraisers.”

Plaza Advisory Group is comprised of three advisory teams who each bring their own strengths to the business. The result is a well-rounded team with a person who focuses on just about any financial area a client could need. From working with life transitions, such as widowhood or divorce, to business owners and philanthropic families, Plaza offers advice for a wide array of needs. Briggs also explains that having multigenerational teams at Plaza means there are advisors that may better connect with younger clients. “Everyone at Plaza is a peer,” he says. “In the past, jobs were more segmented but now we all work together as a team. By doing that, it allows for the client to have more people to talk to and connect with.” “Combining the strengths and perspectives of the older and younger advisors is beneficial,” Guyer adds. “A multigenerational team to work with multigenerational families just makes sense.” Whatever you’re looking for in your financial planning, let Plaza Advisory Group help those plans last well into the future. hat was once a dated 1980s-style kitchen with pickled oak cabinets, laminate countertops and a dropped chauffeured ceiling is now a bright, stunning space with European flair. Channing Krichevsky, principal and co-owner of C&M Interiors, happened to be the homeowner benefiting from this redesign. Maria Hogrefe, her fellow principal and coowner of C&M Interiors, says Krichevsky was inspired by vintage French kitchens and sought to honor the historic integrity of the home by re-creating the door and window casings to match pre-existing parts of the home. The designing duo chose black-and-white café-style honeycomb flooring, Carrara marble and a stunning shade for the cabinetry to tastefully tie everything together.

“Mixed metals, unlacquered brass and polished nickel lend [themselves] to a lived-in vibe,” Krichevsky says. “Everything is now very usable and accessible.” Additionally, open shelving gives this kitchen an aesthetically pleasing yet useful appeal. “By reducing the quantity of cabinets and utilizing open shelving, the kitchen becomes much more functional and usable for a young family,” Hogrefe says. “Channing loves living in her historic St. Louis city home, and she feels she’s revitalizing it. In general, historic properties are a passion for the design team at C&M Interiors, so working on one personally was a rewarding experience.” C&M Interiors, 937 Midland Blvd., St. Louis, 314-328-1923, candminteriors.com

aron Turner and his wife, Joy, checked the boxes. They graduated from college, rented a home, paid off student loans and started a family. But after 15 years of renting and saving, they still struggled to secure enough cash to buy a house for themselves and their two kids. “We were definitely in a place where we could keep a mortgage, but having $10,000 in savings for a house down payment was not a reality for us,” Aaron Turner explains. “In God’s plan, we came to find out about The FAM … ” This new nonprofit stepped in to help by hiring a real estate agent and covering the down payment, new appliance costs and related expenses – around $20,000 in financial support. Turner’s family was one of the first to benefit from The FAM, which has a mission to “eliminate race as a factor in homeownership throughout St. Louis in one generation.” The FAM is celebrating its one-year anniversary as a nonprofit this month, but the racial justice initiative at the heart of the organization has been developing since 2020 among leaders and members of One Family Church in the metro area, says John Kiehl, The FAM’s founding board member and managing director. The nonprofit’s founders recognize that the oppression of Black people in the past still affects Black people today, particularly when it comes to wealthbuilding opportunities. “We envision St. Louis as a global model of racial equity and economic opportunity by 2060,” details Brent Roam, founder of The FAM and lead pastor of One Family Church. “To date, the increase in net worth of our clients has already risen to $28,000 per family on average as the direct result of homeownership with the assistance of The FAM.” In its first year, The FAM helped 33 Black individuals or families become homeowners in the metro area by giving financial aid and additional resources to those who have been hurt by race-based housing discrimination and who have a personal net worth of less than $50,000. “There are other, typically government-run, programs that provide some down-payment assistance. What differentiates The FAM is both in our generosity – the amount of money we gift our families ranges from $10,000 to $20,000 – and in the very simple process by which they become our clients,” Kiehl explains. “We inquire of them if they or their ancestors lived in the United States prior to 1968, which was the year the Fair Housing Act [was passed], … then they, by definition, were living under discriminatory housing laws.”

The metro area has been shaped by discriminatory policies that abetted wealth disparities and segregation among its communities. By the time the Fair Housing Act outlawed certain housing practices in 1968, wealth in white communities had already compounded, and communities of color were left behind. “St. Louis is an innovator in segregation,” says Jason Purnell, director of Washington University in St. Louis’ Health Equity Works, in a video about The FAM. “We had one of the first municipal ordinances in 1916 that zoned parts of our city by race. After that gets struck down by the Supreme Court, we come up with restrictive deed covenants where neighbors are banding together – very often sponsored by the church on the corner or the civic organization – and writing into their deeds, ‘We will never sell this home to an African American family.’” That, plus redlining, “all creates the map of St. Louis that we have today.” The FAM aims to support Black homeowners as they move into houses in “flourishing neighborhoods,” with the average house price so far being $186,000. For the Turners, that $20,000 boost allowed them to move into a house in St. Louis County’s city of Bel-Nor, “in a safe neighborhood where my kids can go out and play,” Turner adds. “I felt like, financially, we could afford it,” Turner continues. “I felt like we’re – AARON TURNER in a place where we’re able to start building some wealth. I was just thankful... It is oftentimes having that initial down payment that keeps Black families living in apartments, where they’re often paying as much in rent as they would be paying for a mortgage – if they had a house. And just giving enough help to kind of get over that stumbling block really has the potential to change the financial trajectory of that Black family.” The FAM is currently volunteer-run and funded through donations, and at least 40 families are on its waitlist for assistance, Kiehl says. The nonprofit’s website accepts donations at thefamstl.com, noting: “It’s not about charity – it’s about justice.” “A great and grave injustice has occurred against a whole community of people due to the color of their skin that has resulted in this huge racial wealth gap … ,” says Kiehl, who is white. “Housing discrimination meant that they did not get the chance that the rest of us did. It’s not a matter of applying guilt; it’s more a matter of, this is an injustice, and we who have benefited … have an obligation to repair that injustice.”

In God’s plan, we came to find out about The FAM …

Design Q&A HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGNING FOR SMALL SPACES? I believe you need to have one area or element that is a significant focal point in the space. It is similar to how to approach a large landscape but on a size-appropriate scale. I like to utilize textures presented by small stones or a small hardscape element. It’s all about creating a significant impact in the entire space and making the most of every square foot.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN CHALLENGE?

My favorite challenge is making a room or home perfect for a couple that may have different style choices. It is fantastic to see the smiles on their faces when we have discovered the middle ground that they will both enjoy! Blending a variety of colors, shapes and textures allows for a tailored room that is reflective of our clients. Sentimental touches, family photos and simplicity are the key to most residential spaces.

WHAT IS A SPACE YOU ARE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF DESIGNING AND WHY? Recently, I finished my younger daughter’s bedroom, and it’s the perfect mix of pretty, functional and durable – a space that is designed for her to grow into. I always tell my clients that a children’s room doesn’t have to be childish! It can still have childish elements, but we don’t need to have baby animals on every surface. Let’s trickle it in, and start with a beautiful foundation and go from there.

To design a large area, as in all design projects, I first determine the function of the space and the mechanics of my client’s life. Then I begin planning how to divide the large area into more intimate spaces. This can be accomplished by flooring, rugs, furniture placement, etc. The next step is schematic design, where we refine our goals and explore design ideas [and] a design plan is born!

ack from a two-year hiatus, the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition hosted its annual Hope in a Handbag event at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac in mid-April. Designer handbags by Prada, Gucci and Tory Burch and jewelry by Kendra Scott were on display for guests as they sipped cocktails and noshed on heavy hors d’oeuvres. Silent auction proceeds support the nonprofit’s mission to provide an opportunity for every child in foster care to have a healthy and successful life. Hope in a Handbag is more than a party with purses. It’s about raising awareness of local foster children and the need to find them nurturing homes. The money raised will help adoptive families grow stronger by supporting the physical, mental and emotional needs of the children in their care.

LATTE LOUNGE + HG EATERY By Mabel Suen

L

atte Lounge + HG Eatery, which opened in downtown St. Louis in November, features a menu of brunch offerings and specialty beverages like split-cup drinks and a latte flight. Nyshaun Harvey and her father, Larry Green, conceived the restaurant. Harvey opened the original Latte Lounge in November 2020 in Florissant, where she also owns a child care facility two doors away. Green, meanwhile, owns a construction company and events space, and when the 5,400-square-foot space next to his HG Events became available, the father-daughter duo combined forces to bring their first full-service restaurant to fruition. “This was a dream for us, and watching people come in and enjoy our space and the vibe here has been really rewarding for our family,” Harvey says. “It’s a great feeling.” While the Florissant Latte Lounge imparts an intimate neighborhood café vibe, the downtown location, which is nine times larger, was created

with group gatherings in mind. It features a modern interior with refurbished wood tables, booth and lounge seating, swings at the bar and even a game room with a pool table. From the food menu, guests can choose from entrées including Cajun shrimp and grits, as well as chicken and waffles comprising three mini Belgian waffles with chicken on a stick, all drizzled with chile-infused Mike’s Hot Honey sauce. Additional highlights include avocado toast topped with strawberries, pomegranate seeds and hemp seeds. To drink, guests can choose from specialty drinks based on St. Louis’ own Kaldi’s Coffee, such as the Owner’s Favorite – an oat milk-vanilla latte topped with cinnamon. For the indecisive or adventurous, a split cup is available, featuring two 12-ounce beverages side by side. A latte flight also gives guests the unique opportunity to try a sampler of five different flavors in one sitting: latte, turtle, caramel macchiato, cinnamon and white mocha. ARTS SPEAK

A GRAND SLAM! By Bryan A. Hollerbach Photo courtesy of Reedy Press

O

ver decades and decades of Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals organization has fielded any number of memorable teams, and in April, St. Louis’ Reedy Press released a handsome coffee-table book devoted to one of the most memorable. Robert L. Tiemann with Ron Jacober wrote that book, “’64 Cardinals,” an 11-inch-square indexed hardcover totaling 154 pages and brimming with both blackand-white and color photos from 1964 and other years of that period. Subtitled “A Team, a Season and a Showdown for the Ages,” it chronicles in exquisite detail the Redbirds’ nonpareil performance, both at and away from St. Louis’ venerable Sportsman’s Park. That performance, of course, involved such legendary Cards as pitcher Bob Gibson and left fielder Lou Brock, among many more. It also led to the Redbirds’ pennant victory over the New York Mets – and the team’s eventual seven-game World Series triumph over the New York Yankees on Oct. 15. Long before writing “’64 Cardinals,” both Tiemann, a baseball historian, and Jacober, a radio/TV sportscaster, counted themselves as devotees of the diamond, and they personally recall that team with fondness. “I was a young fan and had no idea about the front-office intrigue and owner Gussie Busch’s role in all of that,” Jacober relates. “I suspect he knew very little about baseball, but he knew what failure looked like and tried to do something about it. But as a fan, I was just concerned about what happened on the field.” Tiemann, for his part, speaks to the team’s innate bonhomie. “Despite the pressures and frustrations, these players really loved their jobs,” he states. “Almost all of them seemed to enjoy an easy camaraderie, they shared a great deal of mutual admiration, and many of them formed

close lifelong friendships.” Jacober reflects on a specific aspect of that bonhomie: “I was delighted to learn how a comment from all-star first baseman Bill White to a newspaper reporter, about how the Black players on the team were being treated, eventually resulted in the Cardinals [becoming] what White called the most-integrated team in baseball and helped them win in 1964.” Otherwise, Jacober concludes on an ironic note, given his profession.

“There must have been ‘something in the water,’ as the old expression goes, because several members of the ’64 Cardinals had long and distinguished broadcasting careers,” he states. “Bill White, Mike Shannon, Tim McCarver, Dick Groat, Bob Uecker – all excelled behind the mic and in front of TV cameras. Even Bob Gibson and Lou Brock did some broadcasting.” Reedy Press, P.O. Box 5131, St. Louis, 314-833-6600, reedypress.com LadueNews.com | June 10, 2022    57

READY READERS

WORLDS COLLIDE By Sheila Oliveri

“O

nce upon a time, the world was split into two lands. One land was ruled by the sun and the other, the moon … This was the way of the world, until a curious prince became lost in the mountains that separated these two kingdoms.” So begins “The Magic Flute,” from writer Katy Flint and illustrator Jessica Courtney-Tickle, based on the opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This story of darkness and light, love, logic and wisdom has endured for generations, and Ready Readers recommends this version from a team that specializes in scaling masterpieces for youngsters through their Story Orchestra series. Flint is an expert in adaptation for children, eliminating lesser characters and storylines while retaining the exhilarating tale of Prince Tamino and the obstacles that befall him on a quest given to him by the Queen of the Night. Tamino

is to rescue her daughter, Princess Pamina, held captive by the Sun King. Throughout the journey, Tamino encounters mystical creatures including a dragon, forest fairies and the birdman Papageno, who bestow upon him enchanted objects – including the titular magic flute – enabling him to fulfill the queen’s mission and bring peace to the land. Courtney-Tickle’s mixed-media artwork captures the spirit of the story, using block printing techniques, along with watercolor and collage, to create the deeply engaging two-page spreads. A magical mascot found on each spread links events across pages. Flint and Courtney-Tickles’ book features an audio aspect, as well. Sound buttons embedded in the illustrations play excerpts of the orchestral music and accompanying opera passages. Parents may especially enjoy the short biography of Mozart, a glossary of musical terms and an audio game featured on the end pages. Wrap up this

S

lavery didn’t end with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Although President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed in 1863 the freedom of “all persons held as slaves” within the Confederacy, in practice, the unjust American institution wouldn’t conclude for about two more years. Juneteenth, which was officially declared a federal holiday last year, celebrates this milestone. The event traces its roots back to

Texas, where too few Union troops were stationed to actually enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. “It would be more than two years until General Gordon Granger of the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and told those still held captive that they were free,” says Gwen Moore, curator of urban landscape and community identity for the Missouri Historical Society. “General Granger’s orders marked the beginning of Juneteenth celebrations. As the onceenslaved population of Galveston began departing Texas, they took the traditions of Juneteenth with them, and the celebration spread to other states.” Slavery was officially abolished in 1865 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment. As time passed, Juneteenth expanded, but primarily only in Black communities. However, within the past several decades, Juneteenth has received more widespread recognition. In 1980, Texas officially acknowledged Juneteenth as a state holiday, and in successive years, at least 41 other states and the District of Columbia followed suit to recognize the day. Yet the movement to recognize Juneteenth gained serious momentum in 2020 and 2021, amid the social unrest associated with the 2020 police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota. Finally, in June 2021, the federal government formally consecrated Juneteenth as a national holiday with the passage of a bipartisan bill, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. “I would hope that as it continues to grow, it will aid in a greater understanding of our shared past and how that past unites

JUNETEENTH UNETEENTH IS MORE THAN A ONE-DAy CELEBRATION CELEBRATION. IT IS AN APPRECIATION Of AfRICAN AMERICAN HISTORy AND CULTURE, AND A RECOGNITION THAT THE BLACK PAST IS INTERTWINED WITH WHAT WE USED TO THINK Of AS THE LARGER AMERICAN STORy.” – Gwen Moore

us in achieving common goals that uphold American ideals,” Moore says. “Juneteenth is more than a one-day celebration. It is an appreciation of African American history and culture, and a recognition that the Black past is intertwined with what we used to think of as the larger American story.” With more understanding comes greater focus on commemorating the holiday. This year, organizers in the Delmar Loop plan to honor Juneteenth with a celebration on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 5 p.m. Organizers invite people from across the metro area to spend a day enjoying familyfriendly fun like live music, hands-on art activities, food, music and more, all opening with a drum call. “Look for live art, including a community mural painting and activities at St. Louis Artworks,” says Celeste Grayer, event manager for the celebration “There will be fun for the whole family, with live music, African drumming, dancing, food, bounce houses, face painting, henna, giveaways from Shoe Fly, a 360 photo booth and button makers.” The Delmar Loop is home to around 30 Black-owned businesses and first celebrated Juneteenth in 2018. Because this year’s event takes place before Juneteenth, Grayer says the festivities will serve as a fitting start to the metro area’s holiday celebrations: “This is a great way to kick off Juneteenth and ensure that you and your family can make it to all of the celebrations that will be held around the region.” Still, as Moore says, Juneteenth isn’t like some other holidays, where celebrants easily forget the meaning and message the next

day. She encourages people to learn about Juneteenth and about African American history, both in the metro area and in the country. A good place to start? The Missouri History Museum’s online exhibit, “#1 in Civil Rights: The African American Freedom Struggle in St. Louis,” which is available for free at civil-rights.mhs.yourcultureconnect. com and showcases the city’s role in freeing enslaved people leading up to and during

the Civil War, as well as the civil rights movement that followed. “We can all continue the growth of the newest national holiday by continuing to celebrate it in meaningful ways,” Moore says. “That includes the programs and festivities, but also by honestly exploring our unvarnished common past: the good and the discomforting.”
