EDITOR ‌WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I WALKED INTO OUR NEW HOME, the first thing that blew me away was the hardwood flooring. I loved the clean lines, how they lightened the space and created an easy elegance. In this week’s Abode section, LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach shares the story of Boardwalk Hardwood Floors, which, as you may have guessed, focuses on selling structurally and aesthetically pleasing flooring. Starting on page 26, we hope you enjoy learning more about this locally owned company, its array of offerings and its strong hope to leave clients floored with the finished product. Also, in this week’s The Daily section, we are proud to introduce the 2019 Ladue News Charity Awards winner, Aim High St. Louis. Aim High St. Louis is a tuition-free personal and academic enrichment program for middle school students who potentially come from challenging circumstances or environments. We hope you enjoy learning more about this organization, as told by LN contributing writer Connie Mitchell, starting on page 50. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

Editor’s Corner The word around town

Elementary and high school students in the Webster Groves School District collaborated on a community benches and planter boxes to donate to the organization. Industrial technology students at Webster High School showed the children some woodworking skills, and then after finishing the projects, the kids took a tour of the high school. What a wonderful collaboration!

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) honors and celebrates the contributions of three musicians who retired in the 2018-19 season. The three musicians depart with a combined 133 years of experience. Anne Fagerburg, cello, joined SLSO in 1980, and in addition to her musical performances, she was instrumental in the creation of the SLSO’s Equal Play concert, an annual program of chamber works by female composers. Morris Jacob, viola, joined SLSO in 1981 and was a member of the viola section for 38 years. He has also appeared as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony Chamber Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Donald Martin, double bass, enjoyed a 56-year career with SLSO and retired on December 31, 2018. He played on the opening night of Powell Hall, served on numerous committees within SLSO and played under six music directors.

our dreams for the future are inextricably linked to your finances. UMB Private Wealth Management recognizes that and augments financial plans with each client’s unique vision for the years to come, so that his or her hopes stand the best chance of becoming a reality. “At UMB, our process begins with understanding our clients’ stories, who they are, and what are their priorities and objectives,” says Phil Klevorn, senior VP and Private Wealth regional manager. “From there, we come back with solutions to help them reach those goals.” Occasionally, new dreams are born from watching one come to an end. UMB prides itself on developing an exit strategy for business owners that pays respect to the legacy that they have built while allowing room for continued growth. “One of the biggest challenges at times is the emotion that is tied to [these situations],” Klevorn shares. “We recognize clients have spent years and years building up their business. Exiting from it is an emotional experience.” The credible advisors at UMB earn the trust of their clients by keeping them informed about how to create stability for their self-grown business with the added reassurance of finding a way to keep a client’s vision intact. These financial gurus are able to offer this support by continuing to grow their individual talents.

“The team here is really tuned into professional development opportunities,” Klevorn explains. “That entails everything from web classes on the new tax code to three-day seminars on trust planning. We also have a lot of in-house opportunities, including discussions and seminars.” This education even continues beyond business hours. “Everybody on this team, including me, are prolific readers,” he adds. “We’re dialed into The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, The Economist and even on the local scene, with items like the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. We know not only the technical demands [needed] but also the softer skills to lead clients through our process.” The full-service wealth management team boasts expertise in private banking, investments management, trust management, estate planning, wealth transfer and business exits, which Klevorn states are “the pillars of successful financial planning.” “At the end of the day, it’s about our clients,” he says. “It’s about what they need and how we meet those needs. We’re dialed into all aspects of [financial planning] to help our clients get to where they need to be.” UMB Private Wealth Management, 314-612-8013, umb.com/privatewealth

Each year, the Women of Achievement recognizes the extraordinary commitment of 10 women who model their values and beliefs through volunteer service and volunteer leadership. The awe-inspiring impact of their selfless gestures is evidenced in lives that are transformed, and by the number of organizations who experience greater outcomes, due to the volunteer efforts of the honorees. Now in our 64th year, the premier event has become a staple in our community and draws attendance from across the St. Louis metropolitan region. ‌ It can be said the volunteer efforts of the honorees is reflected in the earned reputation of respect that St. Louis enjoys as being a top charitable city.

DINING ROOM DIVINITY

By Trey Ross

T

his dining room is a divine combination of old-home charm and modern features with warm and cool tones – an inviting space that is both glamorous and organic. The home in Claverach Park in Clayton is owned by two architects who spend part of their year in Beijing and part of their year here, where their son is a student. Gigi Lombrano, ASID, of Gigi Lombrano Interiors was tasked with designing a space that was “East meets West” – an amalgamation of his clean, minimalist architecture style and her love of details and pretty aspects. “It was about creating this usable, elegant space,” Lombrano says. “Comfort was key and not just getting something that looked pretty, but was also functional.” Lombrano explains that it is very important in her clients’ culture to have a space where the dining room is for more than just food – it’s a place where friends can come over, family games can be played, tea can be served, conversations can be had. In order to create this ideal, harmonious space, Lombrano had to work with what was already there. “The house that they purchased had stained glass windows, which were just absolutely gorgeous, and you don’t want to detract from that, but it changes the lighting in the space,” Lombrano explains. “We wanted to incorporate something with the wood floors and the stained glass windows.” The live-edge table gives the room an organic and sculptural feeling, while Lombrano explains that finding a base that wasn’t clunky was crucial to keeping the space simple. “We had to really keep it soft and not let the wood overtake the space,” Lombrano explains. She used a warm gray for walls and chairs to enhance a quiet look. The pièce de résistance, however, is the chandelier, a masterpiece that is interesting and dynamic. “The chandelier is so sculptural, light and open,” Lombrano says. “Changing the light fixture really helped bring the house into a current vibe without detracting from the character of the house. “I really love the juxtaposition of the beautiful old windows and the modern elements. I think the room doesn’t read as a modern, contemporary space. There is a lot of warmth and richness to the space, and it feels appropriate.”

for Everything! By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos courtesy of Boardwalk Hardwood Floors

With three locations, a retailer here wants to be “under foot” – in a good way! – for homeowners throughout the metro area. 26   June 14, 2019 | LadueNews.com

T

hrough his company’s products and services, Greg Blanke hopes to floor potential customers – literally. Blanke owns Boardwalk Hardwood Floors, which focuses not only on selling structurally and aesthetically luxe flooring but also on educating its customers on the product, its installation, and its maintenance and refinishing. In that regard, it may be no coincidence that the company shares its name with the most luxurious property on the perennially popular Hasbro game Monopoly. “We have a source for anything a consumer can imagine,” Blanke says of Boardwalk’s mind-boggling breadth of offerings. “We have multiple [supply] companies that offer a wide selection of products, and if we can’t find that exact product a customer wants, we have several mills that will make custom products to match.” Blanke continues by providing a telling detail about Boardwalk’s capabilities: “A few years back, a designer for a major retail clothing chain came to see me and was looking for a particular color on a floor and couldn’t find it anywhere. I told him to give me a color swatch and I’d have one of our vendors match the color on any type of wood, which led to Boardwalk selling material to them in multiple stores across the U.S.” He himself brings to the table considerable experience. According to his company’s robust website, Blanke previously worked for the Earth Citybased wholesale flooring distributor E.J. Welch Hardwood Floors and then the Bruce brand of Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s Armstrong Flooring. He thereafter opened Boardwalk, in Manchester, in 1997. A second

location, in Crestwood, followed two years later; a third, in St. Charles, opened in 2003. Over time, since the company’s founding 22 years ago, Blanke relates this about Boardwalk’s most popular ongoing single offering: “We sell a lot of solid hardwood flooring – in particular, solid hickory flooring. Hickory is the hardest domestic species of wood and performs well for active families with kids and pets.” In addition to flooring, Blanke’s company offers such products as molding, vents and many other things – including a vast knowledge of the topic. In fact, Boardwalk personnel teach weekly seminars on installation and refinishing. Among other items, Boardwalk products include, predictably, a variety of hardwood flooring (prefinished, unfinished, handscraped, wire-brushed and exotic), a similar variety of reclaimed materials (hardwood floors, beams/mantels and barn siding), and laminate, cork and leather floors. Otherwise, Boardwalk’s exclusive relationships with many mills allow the company to shrink the industry supply chain, to use standard wholesale/retail terminology – and thereby to add value to its products and services. Regarding services that supplement products, beyond the seminars mentioned previously, Boardwalk’s include qualified installation referrals, tool rentals, delivery and free sample checkout. As a service-oriented bonus, the website also presents brief information on care and maintenance, with helpful tips on various subjects; Boardwalk recommends 45 to 55 percent relative humidity year-round, for example, to avoid annoyances like gapping, crowning and cupping. Otherwise, Boardwalk’s website helpfully includes copious background on the categories of its products and services, as well as specific varieties of wood. A section on hand-scraped flooring, for instance, lauds it for “textures that can hide or mask everyday mishaps” and includes a subsection on hand-scraped (bingo!) hickory – which itself subdivides into a whopping 14 varietal sub-subsections.

28   June 14, 2019 | LadueNews.com

Beyond the long-term popularity of hickory, Blanke addresses the short term – in the form of a product from Boardwalk now “trending” noticeably. “Wide-plank flooring is very popular, especially in French white oak,” he says. “I think a lot of consumers are tired of the narrow widths, 2¼ inches and 3¼ inches, and [want] something that will set their home apart from their neighbor.” Whether traditional or trendy, Boardwalk clients can anticipate a fairly straightforward process for purchasing and installing flooring, the company’s owner notes. “We ask each potential customer a series of questions to find out a lot about their project and lifestyle,” Blanke says. “We then take that information and recommend products that will perform based on the information we gather. If a customer needs an install, we’ll connect them with an extremely qualified and recommended installer.” Moreover, despite Boardwalk’s extensive residential outreach, Blanke cites a nonresidential installation as a recent engagement that most pleased him professionally. “We just completed a project for Commerce Bank in Clayton, and the project turned out beautiful,” he says. “A lot of design professionals are hesitant to put wood in commercial applications, and we thrive on helping them pick the right products that will perform in commercial environments.” Finally, whether to potential residential or corporate customers contemplating contacting his company at some point soon, Blanke provides a handy caveat about its products and services. “Summer is typically extremely busy for us,” he says. “Once kids get out of school, homeowners focus on improvements on their house. We anticipate this summer will be even busier with the long winter we had this year.” Translation? Nab Boardwalk before someone else plants a hotel on it! ight peeks through an intricate stained glass ceiling, bringing the dark shaker shingles adorning the walls to life. The light pouring in from the stately slated windows, though, shines on the star of the space – a walnut bar with old-world accents. Visitors would think they were walking into an old Irish pub, not what once was a first-floor exterior porch. It is clear, though, that with the help of Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath, your space can be anything but ordinary. Launched in 2006 by husband-and-wife team Todd and Jenny Rausch, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath is on a mission to create customer-inspired spaces their clients never want to leave – or in this case, a space they themselves never want to leave. You see, for this space, Todd Rausch was not just the designer – he was also the client. “I’ve always loved the feel of old Irish/English pubs,” Todd Rausch says. “The level of detail is so great that you can sit in a room countless times and still find details that you’ve missed in previous visits.” The biggest challenge when designing the space was just that – space. “We had to pack a lot of function into a small space and still make it beautiful,” Todd Rausch says, noting they didn’t even have room for an under-counter refrigerator. “I was able to find a miniature refrigerator that is just big enough to hold about six soda cans.” He also added that there wasn’t a good wall for a pub necessity – a TV. “I was able to get a lift that drops the TV out of the ceiling in front of a window,” Todd Rausch says. “When it’s in the up position, it fits seamlessly into the woodwork on the ceiling, and you would never know it’s there.” The ceiling, wondrous box-beam woodworking, is a story all on its own. “We had two 180-year-old white oaks in our front yard that died,” Todd Rausch says. “I had them rough-sawn and then dried the wood in our warehouse for a little over a year, and then had it planed down to the right thickness. All of the wood on the ceiling is from those two trees.” Although the details abound in this space, Todd Rausch believes the stained glass portion of the ceiling is by far his favorite. “It really puts the space over the top,” he says. “There are not a lot of houses around town with stained glass ceilings, which also makes it special.” For Jenny Rausch, though, what made it so singular was the process: “I loved watching Todd dream it and make it come to life. His passion was evident and clear.” Go on and dream it. Karr Bick will do it.

AGENTS PROFILE

Wayne Norwood & Ben Patton OF JANET McAFEE REAL ESTATE

By Amanda Dahl ‌ s Wayne Norwood and Ben Patton have discovered A during their decade-plus in the industry, real estate requires patience, professionalism and a collaborative mentality to achieve success for all involved. They elevate the buying and selling process with their integrity and respect for individuality in each transaction. “The most rewarding part of our practice is helping an owner with presenting their home to the market and then optimizing their return from the sale,” Norwood says. Representing the finest homes is a specialty for the duo, who often unveil the area’s most impressive properties, highlighting significant architectural design. Even so, Norwood and Patton recognize that it takes more than securing a noteworthy property to close a deal. “Plan for contingencies and prepare an action

plan to address them,” Patton advises. “You should never consider a sale as being complete until the client is satisfied.” Each has mastered skills to ensure transactions run smoothly. Norwood boasts 30-plus years in sales. At age 53, he inquired with friends on what career they thought best suited him – 25 of the 28 declared real estate. “The most challenging aspect to this industry is navigating emotions, especially with the scale of our listed homes,” Norwood details. “We take great pride in helping our clients remain objective and remove the emotional aspect whenever we can.” Patton pursued real estate one month after graduating college, understanding the challenges he would face. “It is a demanding job that requires availability almost 24/7,” he says. “We are happy to help our clients throughout the complex process.”

GROOMING & GLAMOUR

Go Bold WITH BLUE By Alecia Humphreys

‌E

yeshadow comes in just about every color under the sun, yet we often stick to our taupe tones and pleasant pinks, and, occasionally, brave a smoky eye with black. However, this bold blue look will have you feeling beautiful and bubbly – perfect for your next date night! And don’t worry, we have you covered from start to finish for this vivid look!

1

1. After washing your face and moisturizing, massage one pump of MARC JACOBS’ UNDER(COVER) PERFECTING COCONUT FACE PRIMER evenly across the face. Formulated with five forms of coconut, this primer will bring a refreshing feel, while creating the perfect canvas for foundation. Available for $45 from Marc Jacobs (marcjacobsbeauty.com).

3

2. Once your foundation of choice is applied, draw a line across the top lash line and the outer lower lash line with MARC JACOBS’ FINELINER ULTRA-SKINNY GEL EYE CRAYON in SUB(MARINE). Available for $25 from Marc Jacobs.

4. Swipe REVLON’s PHOTOREADY INSTANT CHEEK MAKER – the highlighter side sitting atop your cheekbones – toward your temples. Gently blend the duo with your fingertips. Available for $11 from Revlon (revlon.com). 5. Glide BITE BEAUTY’s CRYSTAL CRÈME SHIMMER LIP CRAYON in Cherry on Top onto your lips. Available for $24 from BITE Beauty (bitebeauty.com).

hine Boutique didn’t downsize – it “rightsized,” explains owner Tamara Netsch, who heard a friend use the term to describe the new space. After almost three years at its original location, the store recently moved to a cozier storefront just a few doors from its former spot. Netsch wasn’t looking to move. Even though she knew the original location was too big, Netsch considered relocation unlikely because of her multiyear lease. “When I was leaving the parking lot one night, I saw there was a ‘for lease’ sign in here,” she says. “I thought, ‘Ya know, I’m just going to call and check.’” Since the same landlord owned the property, Netsch was able to secure the smaller space while staying in the Ta m ara N e t s c h same shopping center. The new location opened at 9757 Clayton Road in Ladue mid-March. In addition to the better size, Netsch says the new spot has been a great fit because of its increased visibility on a corner lot. “It’s funny, we only moved five doors up, and we’re getting new customers,” she says. “There is a whole [Companion Baking] lunch crowd [who] parks in the spaces in the section of the lot right in front of our store and walk to lunch and back to their cars. They weren’t getting far enough down to our old location.” About the young business, Netsch continues: “I also think that, had I moved far, it would be hard for us. We were just starting to get our momentum with our customers, so I feel like we would have lost that.” If customers accidentally visit the original location, they can simply walk to the new store without even moving their car. The hours have adjusted slightly, with customer ease in mind. To give shoppers more time to visit after work, the store is now open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Netsch, who has years of experience working as a retail buyer, actually moved to the metro area four years ago to take over an existing retail store. “Long story short, that did not work out,” she says. “I had moved my family from Minnesota, and I had always wanted to open a store – I have been in retail since I was 15 years old – [but] it did not seem realistic to me until the ball was already rolling.” Since then, Netsch has focused on making Shine Boutique its own destination, complete with signature events like its weekly artisanal pop-up shops. Popular local offerings include jewelry by Hoopla, Inali Jewelry Designs and Zingara Gems, as well as small clay gifts by Carol Fleming Marks and Mark Jenkins Footwear, both of which are designed here in St. Louis. “I knew I had too much space trying to fill it,” Netsch says of the previous store location. “It’s kind of like a purse. You have the bigger purse, you just start filling it, and it’s not as mindful. In my small purse, I have to really think about what I put in here.” That means a more cohesive, curated selection for customers without losing any of the categories shoppers have grown to love. Even in the smaller location, the selection at Shine Boutique remains vast and includes women’s apparel, shoes, accessories and gift items. Sought-after finds by the Shine Boutique shopper, says Netsch, include items by local artisans, reading glasses and unique accessories. The store’s monogramming services are also consistently popular, as both items bought in the store and those brought from home can be personalized in the shop. The eclectic selection covers a variety of ages and price ranges, and the styles lean from classic to bohemian. To customers who haven’t seen the new location, Netsch invites them to come find the new space and see that it has the same offerings. “We had too much space – you live and learn,” she says. “Every single customer [who] has come from over there will come in and say, ‘This is much better for you.’” Shine Boutique, 9757 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-942-3055, shineboutiquestlouis.com

Grilled Asparagus With Tōgarashi and Lime By Amanda Elliott

T

his simple, tasty recipe accomplishes two goals: It provides an excuse to fire up the grill, and it makes the most of fresh, locally grown asparagus while it’s still in season. Here, we’re upgrading standard grilled asparagus with a pop of lime juice and spicy tōgarashi, a Japanese blend of chili peppers, sesame seeds and seaweed. The bite of acid and heat balance with the mellow sweetness of honey and garlic, which get further depth of flavor and caramelization from the grill. Find tōgarashi at your favorite local specialty grocery store. Trust us, all of your summer dining guests will be impressed with this unique, exotic ingredient!

GRILLED ASPARAGUS WITH TŌGARASHI AND LIME Serves | 4 |       

1 lb asparagus, peeled 1 Tbsp olive oil 3 cloves garlic, grated salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste juice of 1 lime ½ tsp tōgarashi ½ tsp honey

| Preparation | Heat grill or a grill pan on your stovetop to high heat. In a medium bowl, add asparagus, olive oil and garlic, and season with salt and pepper; toss to combine. Add asparagus to grill grates or grill pan, and char 3 to 4 minutes per side. Return to medium bowl, and add remaining ingredients; toss to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or room temperature.

Happily Ever After

‌ONCE UPON A TIME, TWO KITTIES

were born with birth defects that didn’t allow for one of their back legs to develop correctly. With big, expressive eyes and sturdy, fluffy bodies, they were beautiful, but it would be a long journey ahead to find forever homes that would love them despite their flaws. Melista Falconnier had always loved cats. When a friend suggested she start volunteering for Animal House Cat Rescue and Adoption Center, she jumped at the chance and began going every Thursday. “You end up falling in love with all of them,” Falconnier admits. She had always considered adopting a cat with special needs and ended up falling head over heels for a pair of three-legged fur babies. Ross and Cami had come from less-than-ideal conditions at an informal breeder’s home. From that hoarding situation, 22 cats were removed and placed at Animal House in hopes of

a brighter future. Falconnier watched the rest of the big group get adopted one by one, leaving Ross and Cami. “I went to go see my mom, and I told myself that if they were still there when I got back, I’d adopt them,” she says. And they were, almost as if they were waiting. Falconnier brought Ross and Cami (now named Googie and Pearl) home in December. The 2-year-old cats have kept her entertained ever since, amusing her with their playfulness and energy, despite having only six legs between the two of them. “I was surprised how active they are with their legs,” Falconnier says. “They want to play and chase each other. They just tire out quicker.” Pearl still has a fairly shy temperament, and Googie loves to talk. They’ve both come out of their shells quite a bit, Falconnier says, and are obsessed with chasing laser pointer dots and batting balls around. Googie in particular will vie for Falconnier’s attention, particularly when she’s talking on the phone.

By Robyn Dexter

“He’s so vocal,” she says. “If I’m on the phone for too long, he’ll let me know it’s time for me to pay attention to him.” Falconnier speaks highly of Animal House and gives its staff credit for working with the cats so they can go to their forever families. “They really get to know [the cats’] personalities and help them evolve,” she says. “They put so much time and effort into matching them with a family.” As for her own two, Falconnier says Pearl and Googie have completely melted her heart. “I love animals,” she says. “They keep you present and in the moment. No matter what your day is like, they’re always happy to see you.”

2019 Ladue News Charity Awards Winner

awards Aim HigH 2019 CHARITY

St. LouiS

A

im High St. Louis might be the winner of the 2019 Ladue News Charity Awards, but the real winners are its more than 400 “Achievers” – middle school students who benefit from the academic, social and personal development encouraged through the free five-week summer program. With many coming from challenging backgrounds and circumstances, Achievers experience a twofold approach to growth and learning. Teachers, teaching assistants and staff not only help Achievers with academic skill-building but also provide learning opportunities to support social and emotional development. “In five short weeks each summer, students gain targeted academic skills that are transferable between subject areas and that will appear in their classroom in the year ahead,” says Julie Angelica, executive director. She adds that participants who at first express reluctance or concerns about specific skills often find newfound success through Aim High’s project-based and hands-on approach in small classes with a student-to-teacher ratio of 4:1 or better. “The program also attends equally to promoting personal growth in our students’ self-identity, encouraging them to explore the beliefs and values that influence their behaviors and decision-making,” Angelica says. “This empowers students to be more intentional in their choices at an earlier age, which helps them set themselves up for success in school and in their personal lives. They gain confidence in themselves both in and out of the classroom.” Students apply for the program after the presentation at their school. The application includes a student’s most recent report card, information for parents or guardians to complete, a nomination form from the student’s teachers and shortanswer and essay questions for the student that ask about future plans and goals, about strengths and challenges in school, and about what unique attributes and skills the student will bring to the Aim High experience. Most students are pre-identified by their teachers, so most applicants meet admissions criteria. There is a waiting list, and some students are admitted after the program begins, based on actual attendance and site capacity. Angelica is confident in the program’s approach. Of participants who attended Aim High for four consecutive summers from sixth through ninth grades, 96 percent of alumni reported graduating from high school. “Based on data from the National Clearinghouse, a national postsecondary admissions registry, we know that 77 percent of Aim High graduates enroll in postsecondary programs of study, as compared with just 44 percent of their peers who were Aim High-eligible but never attended,” Angelica says. She and Aim High’s staff, board of directors and many volunteers use careful data-gathering to adjust programming to ensure continued relevance and success. For

50   June 14, 2019 | LadueNews.com

example, recent research and analysis resulted in the creation of the Ninth Grade Academy, a restructured experience for the oldest Achievers, offering block schedules, leadership development and enhanced career and college exploration, along with weekly community sessions on current topics such as cultivating an online presence and anti-bias training. Another example is the enhancement of STEM (or science, technology, engineering and math) programming and related partnerships. “It’s been exciting to see the students explore nature and get hands on outside the classroom through partnerships with area organizations like Earth Dance Farms and Danforth Plant Science Center, opportunities many of our suburban and city-based students otherwise wouldn’t know about,” Angelica says. New this summer, Achievers will have a chance to spend a day of career mentoring with local community leaders as Aim High All Stars. “These students will be nominated by the faculty and site leadership,” Angelica says. “We’re still in the process of finalizing student selection criteria, but in general, we will be looking for students who demonstrate leadership, integrity and initiative. “Another developing component that we’re really excited about is a civics module we’re introducing,” Angelica continues. “It will provide a conduit for some critical-thinking exercises that will help kids explore larger world issues such as ethics, politics and economics, and design their own research and conclusions through project-based learning.” Although the summer program is the foundation for Aim High, Achievers also participate in Saturday sessions during the school year, focusing on outdoor learning, fun and local culture through field trips to sites such as The Griot Museum of Black History, the World Aquarium, the City Museum and the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. The young scholars also discover career options and learn about the local impact of companies through

field trips that include Milipore Sigma, Southwest Airlines, Clayco, Monsanto (Bayer) and Christner Architects. “Saturdays spent on our home campuses – John Burroughs and St. Louis Priory – are focused on academic support and social connection to the Aim High community,” Angelica says. “Because we’re drawing students from all across the St. Louis region – well over 60 schools – and partnering with four districts, as well as charter and parochial schools, Aim High becomes the common denominator for the Achiever community, where they can catch up with like-minded friends, which helps students maintain focus and a positive mindset back in their home schools and communities.” Angelica and a committee of board members, staff and alumni are in the midst of a strategic planning process that will result in a new longterm vision to make Aim High the premier program for middle school students in St. Louis. “It will require a significant investment of resources – expertise, infrastructure and revenues – and we’re excited about our potential to impact young people at a larger scale,” she says. Because the organization is sometimes referred to as one of the city’s “best-kept secrets among the philanthropic community,” Angelica notes that “we’re focused on changing that so that the name Aim High is consistently recognized as the difference-making program for middle school students in St. Louis by name alone. We’re on our way!” Aim High St. Louis, 755 S. Price Road, St. Louis, 314-432-9500, aimhighstl.org

moked meats and fresh seafood make an unlikely but surprisingly delicious, creative pairing at Creve Coeur’s Cobalt Smoke & Sea, which opened early last month and which features globally inspired new American cuisine in an upscale-casual setting. The restaurant comes from owner/operator Bernadette Faasen, who previously owned Woodsmoke BBQ & Windowsills Pies in Ellisville for six years before closing it at the end of 2018 to make way for her new venture. “I felt like St. Louis County and specifically West County needed something that was unique and fun – something residents here don’t have to go all the way to the city for,” Faasen says. “It’s a little bit of the land and the sea under one illuminated space. ‘Cobalt’ represents the blue curl of the smoke from the hottest part of the fire, as well as the sea.” When embarking on this azure adventure, Faasen brought on executive chef Joe Stamer, whose style

54

combines simplicity and sophistication, to develop the menu. Stamer previously served as the chef de cuisine of St. Louis’ Edibles & Essentials, and his culinary résumé includes such establishments as that city’s Sidney Street Cafe and Onesto Pizza & Trattoria and Chesterfield’s Balaban’s. Cobalt Smoke & Sea fills the 3,800 square feet previously occupied by The Gas House Grill. It can accommodate roughly 100 guests inside the dining room, with an additional 35 to 50 seats available on the patio. The interior, channeling its cool-tone namesake, features a decidedly elegant, relaxed ambiance. Faasen worked with Ellisville contractor GFS Services, which custom-built elements such as Edison bulb fixtures for the bar. Faasen also handpicked all facets of the décor to tie the land-and-sea theme together. Highlights include handcrafted replicas of gingko trees illuminated with string lights, custom-made by the artist who created similar sculptures for the Bellagio Hotel and Casino

in Las Vegas. As another noteworthy feature, a pygmy sperm whale sculpture hangs prominently in the dining area, a centerpiece that seemingly swims amid leather chairs and mounted fireplaces. From the menu, guests can choose from top-selling items such as burnt ends (a dish from Faasen’s previous experience at Woodsmoke) in a new presentation with yakiniku sauce, sesame soba, braised leeks and baby bok choy. Another popular pick, a duck fat burger, features house-ground chuck with marbled duck fat, white American cheese, pickles and onions on a toasted brioche. “It’s all food I like to eat, and I enjoy a lot of different kinds of cuisines,” Stamer says. “We’re trying to do things with smoked meats that aren’t Americanstyle barbecue since that’s already well covered in this city. There are so many great smoked meats from all around the world.” Highlights from the “sea” side of the menu include a daily market catch cooked with white-wine broth,

queen olive gremolata, cannellini and greens. A white clam pizza features a blistered crust, littlenecks, chopped garlic, olive oil, oregano and pecorino Romano. So try something from the land or something from the sea before heading off to Oz – well, a showing of The Boy From Oz from STAGES St. Louis. The menu doesn’t stop at these mouthwatering dishes, though – the drink menu should not go unnoticed. Lead bartender Marlowe Smith, previously of Bar Louie, mixes handcrafted cocktails such as the eye-catching A Cobalt Affaire. This gorgeous cocktail features ice cubes made of hibiscus flower, which causes it to morph into a pleasant, bright pink as it sits. The Lavender Orange Belle Cosmo, another highlight, sports a house-made orangeginger vanilla rim. Select craft and domestic beers are also available to guests, as are vintages from A. Bommarito Wines. “When customers come in to try our food and say that they had such a great time, it makes what we do all worth it,” Faasen says.

Cobalt Smoke & Sea, 12643 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur,

‌Story:  It’s a long way from Tenterfield, New South Wales, in Australia – commonly nicknamed Oz, of course – to the glitz and glamour of New York City and Los Angeles, but that doesn’t stop Peter Woolnough. He is born in 1944 to an ex-soldier named Dick Woolnough and his wife, Marion. Peter starts performing for the locals in bars at age 10, but his alcoholic father, carrying psychological scars from World War II, takes his earnings to buy booze. Peter teams with another lad, named Chris Bell, to form the Allen Brothers, a duo that achieves some notoriety on the Australian Bandstand TV show. From there, the pair heads across the seas to perform in Hong Kong, where American superstar Judy Garland catches their act and invites them to open for her own show. Following Judy to New York, Peter meets the singer’s daughter, Liza Minelli, and the two eventually marry. However, the stress of two burgeoning careers, often at opposite ends of the country, along with Peter’s growing attraction to men, ends their marriage, although their friendship remains solid. Peter’s solo career as a singer, songwriter and performer hits rough spots along the way, but eventually, he achieves stardom at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall, as well as elsewhere. He meets and falls in love with an advertising executive named Gregory Connell, who joins him on tour, designing sets and lighting for Peter’s shows. Back home, Marion is happy to hear that Peter has found his true love. Greg’s contraction of AIDS and subsequent death devastate Peter, but he continues his work. When he himself is stricken with AIDS, he returns to Australia for one grand finale before dying in San Diego in 1982, looking back on his life with no regrets. Highlights:  STAGES St. Louis opens its 2019 season with the Midwest premiere of The Boy From Oz, a show rarely performed in North America since its Broadway debut in 2003. David Elder commands the stage in the title role of the flamboyant and irrepressible showman from Down Under. Other Info:  The Boy From Oz was a hit when it opened in 1998 in Sydney, as Australians took to the tale of a native hero. Fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman won a Tony Award as Allen in the Broadway version, but the musical has rarely been performed in America since. The STAGES version, directed and musically staged by company artistic director Michael Hamilton, excels in several areas. First and foremost, Elder’s performance electrifies the audience, as he totally inhabits the personality and persuasion of the indefatigable Allen. He leads the charge on bright, bold numbers accentuated by the dazzling choreography of Dana Lewis, remaining amiable and good-hearted throughout.

There’s also an explosion of rainbow-hued lighting in the design by Sean M. Savoie that captures the flavor and essence of the musical, underscoring its vitality. Teamed with the eye-popping costumes designed by Brad Musgrove and James Wolk’s appealing set, the technical aspects of this Boy From Oz richly embellish the production. Hamilton gets smooth performances from a supporting cast that includes Michele Ragusa as the gifted but caustic Judy and Zach Trimmer as the self-confident Greg. Corinne Melançon brings out the maternal love and pride of the long-suffering Marion, while Steve Isom shines in two roles, as the ashamed alcoholic Dick and as Peter’s shrewd and crusty manager. Caitlyn Caughell, a late substitute in the role of Liza, handles the role of the young woman emerging from the shadow of her famous mother with aplomb and appeal. Ben Iken and Simon Desilets rotate in the part of the precocious young Peter, a lad with a showman’s flair even in the Outback, with Iken delightful in the media-night performance. Others contributing handsomely include Erik Keiser as Chris; Brad Frenette as Peter’s approving grandfather; Nic Thompson as Judy’s husband, Mark Herron; and ensemble players Nathaniel Burich, Ashley Chasteen, Lydia Ruth Dawson, Caleb Dicke, Kari Ely, Bryn Purvis, Frankie Thams and Madison Tinder. Stuart Elmore’s orchestral design and musical direction by Lisa Campbell Albert add smoothly polished support for the sundry vivacious dance numbers. Elder’s tour de force performance, along with its strong technical aspects, make this STAGES version of The Boy From Oz a pleasant evening of glitzy entertainment.

Our first recommendation, Jabari Jumps by author/ illustrator Gaia Cornwall, showcases joy, excitement, anticipation and apprehension. Cornwall employs subtle color tones to portray a carefree summer day. Her text, meanwhile, conveys Jabari’s eagerness to conquer the high dive at his neighborhood swimming pool. His “I’m a great jumper, so I’m not scared at all,” however, quickly changes to “You can go before me if you want … I need to think about what kind of special jump I’m going to do.” This relatable story for children should double as a primer for parenting them through the various “firsts” along the way. Jabari Jumps centers on overcoming fear to achieve a goal – an especially significant insight because bravery can

be difficult for preschoolers to understand, with many children linking it to superheroes battling “bad guys.” Speaking of superheroes, Brave by author Stacy McAnulty and illustrator Joanne Lew-Vriethoff, this month’s second recommendation, features text typically found in stories about such characters, but pairs it with pictures of common activities and choices that children may not associate with bravery. Many children’s books involve a scenario of a brave child seeking adventure, accompanied by illustrations of

Want Lower Property Taxes?

By Sheila Oliveri children dressed as pirates or other adventurers. Instead, here, Lew-Vriethoff shows children in a backyard fort reading books, spinning a globe and looking at maps. Another such scenario, of a brave child with superstrength, challenges expectations by showing a determined little girl using her wits to battle a perplexed adult in a challenging chess match. Yet another, of a brave child speaking truth, shows muddy children confessing to a gardener that they broke her flowerpot, while a scenario of brave children saving the world features a gang of colorfully clad youngsters picking up trash in the park. The final image of subtle bravery shows a child standing at center stage for a violin recital, reminding readers just how many diverse acts of courage can be experienced daily.

Sunshine and shareables brighten a new rooftop bar and restaurant in downtown St. Louis.

A

rcing rays of light shower the 16th floor of Hotel Saint Louis with radiant warmth. Small plates and cocktails crowd tables full of family, friends and co-workers (or some combination of the three). This is Form Skybar, a modern reinvention of the hotel watering hole that prizes function and detail above all else – to stunning success. There’s plenty to be impressed with on entering the establishment, including a fully retractable, glass-paneled wall that offers unbeatable skyline views and is sure to be open during sun-soaked afternoons. But as its name implies, the space’s most eye-catching component is the handmade skylight – one of many details both major and minor involved in the property’s renovation. “A $65 million gut rehab brought this amazing building back to life,” says Hotel Saint Louis executive chef Matthew Birkenmeier, a born-and-raised St. Louisan who touts more than 25 years of kitchen experience. “It is such an amazing place that I wanted to ensure that my creative touches for the food follow the function of the hotel.” Once the sun sets and daytime hangouts subside, ornate, layered chandeliers illuminate low-lit evenings at Form Skybar. Meanwhile, a backlit onyx bar frames the open-floor dining area, which features tall and short chairs and tables for groups of any size. All together, the restaurant suggests even a packed house

We wanted to have a fun, functional, creative and detailed menu that fit the beautiful hotel. Simply put, we are striving to be the nonhotel hotel restaurant.

– Matthew Birkenmeier, Hotel Saint Louis executive chef

might belie an intimate evening, regardless of what comes next. “It falls back to function – with Form Skybar, we looked at a casual go-to-thegame or night-out-on-the-town quick bites [concept],” Birkenmeier says. The building itself has an illustrious history. Constructed in 1893, it was initially home to the St. Louis Union Trust Co., which operated there for decades. The space eventually became a city landmark in 1971, suffered from vacancy starting in 2013 and was renovated by Restoration St. Louis – culminating in a 2018 reopening as the Hotel Saint Louis, which operates as part of the Marriott Autograph Collection. Form Skybar draws inspiration (and its name) from Louis Sullivan, a modernist architect who designed both the building where the Hotel Saint Louis now operates and the famous Wainwright Building, another local icon that acted as a sort of forebear to early skyscrapers – and that’s best known as a prime example of Sullivan’s “form follows function” approach. The menu is inspired by this mentality. A St. Louis-centric offering of shareables, small plates and flatbreads means visitors can swing by to mingle before a concert, Blues game or Cards game without the pressures of a full dining experience. Yet there’s still plenty to be had at Form Skybar, as guests can enjoy everything from locally sourced charcuterie and high-stacked smashburgers to vegetarian flatbread and crawfish nachos that, somehow fittingly, arrive in a can. “I knew we did not want to be a stuffy white-tablecloth restaurant,” Birkenmeier says. “We wanted to have a fun, functional, creative and detailed menu that fit the beautiful hotel. Simply put, we are striving to be the nonhotel hotel restaurant.” There is a bourgeoning movement in the culinary world to breathe new

life into traditional “hotel restaurants.” Chefs are flocking to refurbished and renovated new concepts, due in part to the flexibility that working in a hotel offers: less worry over the day-to-day travails of running a business and more focus on the restaurant’s food and spirits programs. Speaking of which, Form Skybar’s cocktail offerings were designed by restaurant director Barry Strange and include both signature drinks and house-made iterations on classic standbys. Current favorites include the Mississippi Mojito – a Jamaican rum drink with watermelon syrup, muddled cucumber and mint, and a splash of club soda – and Aviation, which combines local 1220 Artisan Spirits Origin Gin, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, crème de violette and fresh lime juice. “It was a form of passion for him, and he put together a fantastic menu,” Birkenmeier says. Hotel Saint Louis and Form Skybar symbolize the recent trend of regrowth and revival in downtown St. Louis. Slowly but surely, residents and businesses are returning to the city’s central core, meaning new opportunities to define (and, possibly more important, redefine) downtown experiences. Form Skybar does just that. “I have seen a lot of growth in the city in my time away, and I am truly blessed to be a part of the next renaissance of the downtown scene,” Birkenmeier says. “We have hundreds of surrounding apartments and condos, and all those guests are so happy that there is a new place to wine and dine in the neighborhood.” Form Skybar at the Hotel Saint Louis, 705 Olive St., 16th Floor, St. Louis, 314-241-4300, hotelsaintlouis.com/form
