Thisyear,thetwoorganizationsworked togethertohonorinternationalbestsellingauthor NeilGaimanduringamonth-longcelebrationof thewriterinMarch2023andaspecialceremony inApril2023,whereGaimanwaspresentedwith theSt.LouisLiteraryAward.Thecollaborative effortisyearsinthemaking.
“ForgingapartnershipwiththeSLCLhas beensomethingI’vewantedtodoforyears,”says EdwardIbur,directoroftheSt.LouisLiterary Award.“Publiclibrariesplayamonumentalrolein helpingdevelopourloveofreading,educationand thearts.TheSLCLisoneofthepremierpublic libraryprogramsinthecountry,anditsvalueand impactontheregionisenormous.”

Theeventsweresmashingsuccesses.Heldat theSheldonConcertHall,theSt.LouisLiterary AwardCeremonywelcomedasold-outcrowd of930whiletheauthorcrafttalk–heldthe followingnightattheBuschStudentCenter’s WoolBallrooms–welcomedmorethan1,000 attendees.Bothmaxedouttheirvirtualcapacity.
AndwhileGaimancoverednumerous topicsduringtheawardceremony,theauthor perfectlysummedupwhylibrariesremainvital tocommunitiesandthepeoplewholiveinthem: “Thelibraryisprettymuchtheonlypublicspace yougettogointothatdoesnotexpectyouto paymoney,”hesays.“Librarieshavealwaysbeen formeasupport,alifeline.Iwillgotomydeath supportinglibraries.” ln

“Bynotmowing,you’releavingthatfoodand thatsourceofnutritionforsomeofthose earlyforagers,”saysCarrieCoyne, chairoftheCityofWebster GrovesGreenSpace AdvisoryCommission.
“Thatveryearlyseason canmakeareallybig differencewhenitcomes topollinatorsupport.It’s reallyaboutleavingsome earlyspringwildflowers andweedstoproduce nectarforthem.”
Themovementfoundhuge successinWebsterGroves:Morethan 400residentsparticipated,andtheCityofWebster Grovesevenranoutofsigns.There’snoquestion thatthistraditionwillcontinuenextyear.

Thepublicagency,whichwasfoundedin 2000afteravotefrompeopleinSt.LouisCity, St.LouisCountyandSt.CharlesCountytocreate asalestaxsolelydevotedtobuildingparksand greenwaysintheregion,eventuallyplansto developanetworkofgreenwaysspanningnearly 600milesinandaroundthecity.Withdozensof activeprojectsintheworks–allinvariousstages ofplanning,designandproduction–there’sno shortageofplacesfortheSt.Louiscommunityto getoutdoorsandexplore.
“Generally,we’retryingtoconnecteverything together,servethemostpeople,makethemost impact,”saysEmmaKlues,vicepresidentof communicationsandoutreachatGreatRivers. “Whetherthatbefortransportation,health, economicopportunitiesorconservation.”
GreatRivershasalreadycompletedfour projectsin2023,includingopeningtheBrickline GreenwaynearCITYPARK,TheKatherineWard BurgGardenontheMississippiGreenway, expandingtheCentennialGreenwayinSt.Charles CountyandopeningtheDeerCreekGreenway,a projecttraversingthroughSt.Louis,Maplewood, WebsterGrovesandBrentwood.Fournew projectswillalsoreachcompletionthissummer, furtherconnectingtheSt.Louiscommunitywith sharedgreenways,pavedtrails,publicparks, conservationareasandmore.Mostrecently,Great RiversGreenwayplanstocelebratethenewest expansionoftheMeramecGreenwayalongthe I-44BridgeonJune24from10to11:30a.m.The newgreenway,builtovertheMeramecRiver, connectsvisitorstoEmmeneggerNaturePark, UngerPark,FentonCityPark,OldeTowneFenton andGeorgeWinterPark.

Hesaiditwasthebestplaydateever,andthenextdayIcalledUnlimited Playandaskedhowtocreateaninclusiveplaygroundinourarea.”

“Ialsocreatedafocusgroupwithabout15othermomswhohad kiddoswitharangeoflimitationsanddisabilitiestotalkaboutwhat theirchildrenneed,”Goochsays.Ideasincluded“calmingcorners,”
whicharesoundproofenclosureswherechildrenwithsensoryissuescan stillseetheplaygroundthroughclearwallsbutcantaketimetocalmand regroupiftheybecomeoverstimulated.Theplaygroundalsowillfeature ramps,transferstationsbetweenplayapparatus,specializedseatingand handholds,high-backswingsandsafe,spongysurfacing.
Thegroupalsorealizedthattheplaygroundshouldraise awarenessandeducateparentsandchildrenalikeabouthowthe equipmentworkstoallowmoreaccessforchildrenwithvarioustypes ofdisabilities.QRcodesontheequipmentwilllinktovideosthat demonstratetheinclusivenatureoftheplayexperience.

Akerstraveledtheworldandbuilt churchesandorphanagesfortheministry theyfoundedtogether,OasisInternational Ministries.However,whenMarkAkerssteppedinto thehomeofanewlysettledEthiopianfamilyinSt. Louis,herealizeditwastimetostoptravelingso theycouldhelprefugeeshereinSt.Louis.
“Iwalkedinthedoor,andthelivingroomhad nofurniture,nolightsoranything–itwasjust barehardwoodfloor,”recallsMarkAkers,who foundedOasisInternationalin1989alongsidehis wife,Joani.“Therewasnothinginthekitchen,no furnitureinthebedroom;theyhadoneblanketon thehardwoodfloorforfourpeople.Isaid,‘Howlong haveyoubeenhere?’andtheysaid,‘Sixmonths.’ IcalledJoanionthewayhomeandjustsaid,‘We reallyneedtostoptravelingaroundtheworld becauseGodissendingthenationstous,’and
wefeltlikeHewassaying,‘Whatareyougoingto doaboutit?’”
MarkAkerssayshisfirstinclinationwasto purchaseaU-Haulsohecouldstartcollecting furniturefromfamilyandfriends.
“SoIdid;IboughtaU-Haul,”heexplains.“I droveitmyself.Ipickedupfurniturepeoplewould donate.Thenin2006,weboughtthebuildingat 5035GravoisAve.”
Thatbuildingisnowahubforanorganization thatspreadsresourcesandlove,MarkAkerssays.
“Ourmissionstatementistoloveandcarefor thoseseekingrefugefromawar-torncountrywith theheartofJesus,”hesays.“Sowegivephysical things,butwealsowanttogivelove.”
Intermsofphysicalitems,OasisInternational providesfurnitureandclothingforrefugeefamilies throughouttheregion.
“Theseareyoungfamiliesthathaveexperienced
somuchlossintheircountry–theylostfamily members,theylostfriends,theylosttheirjobs,they losttheirhomes,”JoaniAkerssays.“Theyhadtoflee fortheirlives.Theyaresogratefultobehere,butthey oftencomewithabagofclothes–that’saboutit.”

SueMinxbecamean OasisInternationalvolunteer in2012andhasn’tstopped serving since.
“At first, IhelpedteachEnglish, but Iwasn’tverygoodatit,soI startedworkingwiththechildren, whichisso rewarding,”Minxsays.“I gettoworkwithseveralvolunteersas wetakecareofthechildrenwhiletheir momsordadscomeforEnglishclass.”
Minxspecificallyteaches fiveto 20preschool-agedchildrentwotimes per weekandprovideslessonson colors,numbersandmore.
“Wedolittlecrafts,playwith Play-Dohandsingsongswiththekids,” Minxsays.“Bytheendoftheschool year, theyusuallyhavelearnedsome Englishandsomesimplesongs.It’s very rewardingtoseethekidsgrowand changeduringtheschoolyear. At first itisveryscaryforthembecausethey’ve neverlefttheirmomsbefore,and we don’tspeakthesamelanguage.But theylearnthattheycanhavefun,and theyliketocome.”
It’s these relationshipsthatMinx findssorewarding.
“Wehave awonderfulstaffthat we gettoworkwith, andit’s justavery pleasantplacetogo,”Minxsays.“I thinkasyouestablish relationships withnewrefugees,it’sveryrewarding. Sometimestheyneedalittleextra help,andthefriendshipsyougain arepriceless.”
It’svery rewarding toseethe kidsgrow andchange duringthe schoolyear.

ItwasthefirstmomenttheNorthSt.Louis Countypreschoolersawtheworldclearly–all becauseofbrandnewglassesprovidedbyEyeThrive.
Launchedin2004,theSt.Louis-basednonprofit deliversfreeessentialvisionservicestokidsinpre-K through12thgradeacrossthemetroarea,including 12,000screenings,4,000eyeexams,5,000pairsof glassesand2,000replacementlensesthisschoolyear.
“Anestimatedoneinfourschool-agedchildren hasvisionimpairment,butearlydetectioncan preventmorethan80percentoflong-termissues,” notesKateMcKearn,executivedirectorofEyeThrive. “EyeThrivegetschildrentheglassestheyneedto live,learnandexploretheirworld.”
TheorganizationwasfoundedbythelateBill Jehling,then-presidentatClarksonEyecare,after hisexperiencehelpinghisfriend’syoungsonget
glassesforthefirsttimebroughthisattentionto theoutstandingneedforvisionservicesamong underprivilegedchildreninthecommunity.
Foralmost20years,EyeThrivehasgrowninto making“themagicmoment”ofclearsighthappen onamuchbiggerscale,McKearnsays.
Throughitsschoolvisionscreeningprogram, childrenwithpossiblesightimpairmentare identifiedbyon-staffvisionscreenerscertifiedby theNationalCenterforChildren’sVisionandEye Health,thenscheduledforanappointmentonthe charity’sMobileVisionClinic,allincompliance withtheAmericanAcademyofOphthalmology’s recommendations.
Theoptometrycenteronwheelsrollsinto schoolsandcommunitycentersfullyequippedwith thetechnology,optometristsandassistingstaffto serveupto40kidspervisit.
“Everychildreceivesacomprehensiveeyeexam thatincludesthewholehealthoftheeye,”McKearn explains.“Then,kidsgettopickouttheirglasses,
whichareallbrand-new,top-of-the-lineframesthey reallyfeelproudtowear.”
Withafullopticlabonboardforeyetesting andmakinglenses,McKearnsayskidsputontheir glassesandwalkbacktoclassreadytoseeand learninabout45minutes.Additionally,throughthe organization’sreplacementsprogram,kidswithlost orbrokenglassesaresentanewpair–noquestions asked,McKearnshares.
KidswithmedicalcareneedsbeyondEyeThrive’s servicesreceivereferralstoMedicaid-friendly providers,sheadds,noting,“Alotofthingscanbe seenanddiagnosedthroughtheeyes.”

Therestaurantoriginatedin2019ontheother sideoftheMississippiRiverinTrenton,Illinois, wheretheArcegashavebeenlivingfor13years, butthefoodhasrootsinthecouple’shometown ofValenzuelainthenorthernPhilippines.“My wifegrewuplearninghowtocookwithherolder sister,”RandyArcegasays.“Whenstayingin Trenton,shestartedcookingforherfriendswho loveditandencouragedhertodomore.”
WordofSally’sdelicioushomecookingquickly caughtoninthesmalltown,anditwasn’tlong beforethecouplewentfromservingfoodatlocal eventstooperatingtheirfirstrestaurant.Asthe yearswentby,theynoticedatrend:“Seventyto 75percentofcustomerscamefromSt.Louis,” RandyArcegasays.Giventheircustomerbase, itseemedlikeanaturalnextsteptomovetheir operationclosertotheirregulars.
Atapproximately2,000squarefeet,thenew locationisnearlythreetimesthesizeofthe originalTrentonbrick-and-mortarandisone ofthemanynewbusinessesinhabitingtheJC Midtownproject.“Theowner,JassenJohnson, establishedthishereforpeoplewholiveinthe areasotheydon’tneedtodrivedowntown,” RandyArcegaexplains,citingup-and-coming neighboringbusinessessuchasacafé,wine shopandbrewery.
Thenaturallylitspacefeaturesfour-top seatingandnodstoislandlife,includingafestive
