COOL K-9 COMFORTS In this almost unbelievably ruff assignment, LN digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith details what dogs and their owners can anticipate from Bar K, a canine Disneyland opening later this year in St. Louis’ Grove business district.

With businesses reopening around the metro area, many are looking for ways to support local vendors. On Page 10, read how the Farmers’ Market at The Boulevard is keeping shoppers safe while giving them the opportunity to support farmers in the area. Photo by Christina Kling-Garrett.

FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA It’s been a busy week. My husband and I adopted a kitten from the wonderful area nonprofit Gray Hawk Project. We named him Truman – after our alma mater Mizzou’s mascot – and our love and affection for this little sweet thing has been all-consuming. In my totally unbiased opinion, he’s the most adorable kitten there ever was. To be honest, it’s been such a relief to have something good to focus on in the utter madness of 2020. And that mental/emotional reset is what this issue is all about. LN contributor Bethany Christo’s feature, starting on Page 55, about local handmade ceramics business Boda Clay and its founder’s slow, deliberate creative process could soothe any anxious mind and make you wonder if you should take up an artistic craft of your own. And speaking of furry friends, LN digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith’s story starting on Page 83 about St. Louis’ newest dog-friendly entertainment space, Bar K, will spark excitement in anyone who could use some quality time with his or her four-legged pal – and a drink – right now. Finally, LN regular Frank Cusumano calls out the top philanthropic professional athletes who are making a difference in our community starting on Page 18, in case you were looking for some uplifting news to brighten your week. So cozy up with a cup of coffee – and maybe a purring pet – and enjoy. We hope that reading this issue – as well as daily community updates on laduenews.com – will give you the break you deserve this week. Stay well,

Emily Adams, Managing Editor

S

ummer has arrived, and with businesses beginning to reopen, many area residents are looking for ways to support local vendors and enjoy the weather. Farmers markets are one of the best ways to get out and give back. “The shoppers are happy to have access to farmers’ produce and shop in an outdoor environment,” says Tower Grove Farmers’ Market co-founder Patrick Horine. “It’s a more comfortable space to shop in during a pandemic.” The Tower Grove Farmers’ Market at The Boulevard shopping district in Richmond Heights has seen an influx of visitors to the weekly market since its reopening in May, while still maintaining social distancing guidelines to keep all shoppers safe. “[The pandemic] has affected our opening timeline,” says Horine. “We’ve opened more gradually, growing to our full capacity week by week. We’ve made changes to how we’re laying out the market.” One way the layout has changed is by using one side of The Boulevard, instead of both, as the market has in past years. “This will allow for shoppers to line up and wait,” Horine explains. The 6-foot social distancing is required and masks are strongly encouraged. Any special events hosted by the Farmers’ Market at The Boulevard will also be postponed for this year. “The reception has been very good so far,” Horine adds. “Typically in the spring, there is a pent-up demand for some locally grown food. We normally see our biggest crowds at the initial market. That’s one of the reasons we eased into it.” The market is open Sundays through the end of October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “The best thing that people can do is come out and shop – support the farmers,” Horine says. If people are unable or unwilling to get out, many of the vendors featured in the market also have ways to purchase online. More information on vendors can be found on the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market website. Tower Grove Farmers’ Market at The Boulevard, 1 The Boulevard, Richmond Heights, tgfarmersmarket.com

BUSINESS NOTES

Mixing and

MATCHING By Andrea Smith | Portraits by Abbie Takes Pictures, box photos by Deva Williamson

T

here’s often a difference between what people want to give as gifts versus what they want to receive. Aesthetically pleasing gift sets often contain items meant to look pretty, rather than ones that serve a purpose, says Shannon Lemp, founder of The Matched Box. When she launched The Matched Box earlier this year – just weeks before the coronavirus reportedly reached Missouri – she set out to create gift boxes that are both meaningful and useful, plus feature trinkets from local and regional businesses. “I don’t like putting things in a box that [make people think], ‘Oh, isn’t this nice? Now what am I going to do with it?’” Lemp says. Lemp, a St. Louis native and Ladue resident, says she developed The Matched Box as an online business while phasing out her wedding- and event-planning business, My Blush Events. Through her latest venture, Lemp gets to continue collaborating with other business owners – a task she greatly enjoyed as a wedding planner, she says. Lemp’s wedding expertise has proven useful when designing themed gift boxes such as the celebratory Yes Box for engagements, which includes a small bottle of Champagne, a decorative flute and roses from Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe in Ladue. As a former planner, Lemp advocates for surprising clients with a special treat, like the Wedding Party Relief + Stay Calm and Call Your Wedding Planner box featuring soothing goodies. “Keeping everyone connected, engaged and confident has always been part of the wedding planner’s reality,” states the box’s description on Instagram. “We will help you support your tribe.” Lemp has made similar boxes for Realtors who want to welcome their clients home with a thoughtful gift. Inspired by the quarantine, she also offers Stay Safe and Virtual Hug boxes with hand wipes, tea and cotton face masks. Lemp says much of what she’s doing now is fulfilling custom orders. While promoting boxes for Father’s Day, Lemp got a request for a specific coffee brand, so she tailored the box accordingly. She also created a custom box for a traveling client who wanted to give a memorable St. Louis-themed gift. Scrolling through The Matched Box Instagram page, you’ll see boxes holding candles, skin care products, honey, coffee and more products from metro area businesses. Lemp says she’s focused on the metro area for now but wants to eventually expand and reach small businesses across the Midwest. She says she’s already made contact with interested businesses in Columbia and Springfield in Missouri, as well as Chicago. Lemp expects The Matched Box website to be ready any day, but until then, she’s taking orders through email and Facebook and Instagram messages.

HYKEN’S HOMEWORK

PANDEMIC PARENTING By Dr. Russell Hyken

‌A

lthough many teenagers might not admit it, they are grieving. Major milestones like prom and graduation are gone. The carefree days of summer are now angst-filled hours full of uncertainty: Can I get a summer job? Will I be able to see my friends? Is school going to start again in fall? Virtual opportunities are well-intentioned, but it is no substitute for in-person connection. From a theoretical perspective, the adolescent years are crucial to forming an adult identity. Peers become extremely important to teens as kids define themselves by their associations. Pre-pandemic, our children could pursue their passions and spend time with like-minded individuals. Now, however, kids are stuck at home with the occasional opportunity to interact in small groups, but only if they physically distance. Mom and dad need to recognize that this is a developmentally painful time for our emerging adult children. As a family therapist, I have always been a strong believer that teens need structure and routine. In these times, however, I feel that flexibility is key. This does not mean you should

forgo expectations; rather, it is understanding that our children’s worlds are upside-down – so for instance, playing video games until 2 a.m. might not be a bad thing! Teens are more resilient and more adaptable than most adults. Kids, however, still need their parents. In fact, our role might be more important now than it was in the past. Don’t lecture your children that they have it better than most – they see the news. Rather, step back and encourage your kids to reflect and define what this experience means to them. Parents should avoid imposing on their teens what works for themselves. Invite your kids to join in a conversation that points them in the right direction. Find out what your son or daughter wants and how you can assist. After a while, most will become bored with TikTok videos, social media posts and computer games and will want something more substantial. Although the pandemic is unique for many negative reasons, it is also a time of possibility. Students are in a position to define their identity and pursue their personal interests and goals without the pressure of achievement and grades. Expect your teenagers to do something

productive, but be flexible about the process. Finally, accept that your kids are sad and understand that being sad differs from being depressed. Feeling dejected is, in fact, a normal part of human existence, especially in these turbulent times. Our sons and daughters miss their friends and long for normalcy. If, however, your parental instincts tell you that your child is more affected than he or she should be, consult with a clinical professional. Structure and consistency will help pass time – encourage routines, healthy eating and consistent exercise. However, if you see your teen staying up later than normal, don’t overreact. Although this might not have been acceptable pre-pandemic, it’s OK to let your son or daughter occasionally FaceTime with friends late into the night. Everything is different. Reassure your teens they will get through this. Compassion and understanding will go a long way to helping our children navigate the “new normal” and feel safe during these stressful times.

CONNECT THE DOTS

Self-Esteem at the Forefront I‌ By Dale Kreienkamp, with Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande

consider great leaders to be those everyone wants to follow. They have the respect both of those who work for them and of those who report to others in an organization. Other leaders, no one wants to follow, but they often must. Unfortunately, how such men and women lead and work with their peers and others is lacking. When I examine the difference between great leaders and not-so-great leaders, I believe the missing ingredient to be self-esteem. Self-esteem, it seems to me, can have a major impact in business in three main ways: Decisiveness. Decisive leaders make tough calls over disagreements on the paths their organizations should take. Leaders with positive self-esteem can be more objective in making decisions no one else wants to because success, failure or criticism doesn’t change their opinion of themselves. Leaders with low self-esteem struggle to make decisions, often hiding behind consensus-building. Authenticity. We crave authentic leaders, as well as those who are honest and transparent. Leaders with positive self-esteem care less about how they look to others. They acknowledge when they lack all the answers and embrace candor with difficult news. Leaders with low self-esteem, conversely, are rarely authentic because they don’t want other people to recognize their faults. Humility. We want our leaders to be humble and to share credit in success. Leaders with positive self-esteem are, by nature, humble because they never see themselves as the most important. Conversely, leaders with low self-esteem have a need to tell the world of their accomplishments or praise because in so doing, they build up their own self-esteem. If you want to be a better leader, start with learning to appreciate who you are.

Dale Kreienkamp is a speaker, author and president of Thriving Through Transitions, a consultancy focused on helping organizations and individuals navigate difficult professional and personal transitions and thereby become better. His professional background includes more than 40 years as a human resources executive and consultant. In April, Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande was named the incoming president of Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.

The Assist That Matters

The meTro area loves iTs aThleTes, noT only because of Their excellence in The sporTs They play buT also because of The incredible ways They give back To The communiTy.

S

t. Louis is one of the nation’s best sports towns, but that’s not just because of its championships. So many of our favorite players, both natives and transplants, are beloved because of how they give back to our community. Here’s a glimpse into the ways area athletes have been paving the way in community support.

Isaac Bruce Not only was Bruce voted into the Hall of Fame for his incredible athletic achievements, but also he’s a philanthropist who’s never forgotten this town. The Isaac Bruce Foundation started its scholarship fund 12 years ago. In addition to offering kids scholarships, Bruce’s foundation pays for airfare to get them to college. More than 350 kids have been flown to schools across the country with the foundation’s Flight 300 program.

Kurt Warner Warner’s First Things First Foundation has now been around for 19 years. It buys homes for families, gives coats to those in need and sends dozens of children each year to Disney World. The man talks the talk and walks the walk.

Kyle McClellan

Above: The Joshua House in Haiti Below: A north St. Louis renovation

The former Cardinal’s nonprofit, Brace for Impact 46, supports community development in north St. Louis and Haiti. For the last six years, McClellan and his wife, Bridget, have flown to Haiti to provide support for their childrens home, which hosts 40 kids; their school, which educates 300 students; and their hospital, which provides health care for 1,000 people monthly. Brace for Impact 46 also provides clean water for more than 35,000 people daily.

Wainwright’s Big League Impact foundation has had quite an impact worldwide. His passion is providing water in areas that can’t get it, but he’s also built baseball fields in the Dominican Republic and provided tremendous support for Operation Food Search here. His Fantasy Football Leagues have been a big fundraiser for these worthy causes.

Drew Hanlen The pride of Webster Groves has become a trainer to the stars. From Brad Beal to Jayson Tatum, he’s helped some of the best athletes around with their game. Hanlen’s also done incredible work with an orphanage in Haiti called Melissa’s Hope, a cause that former NBA All-Star David Lee has made big contributions to, as well.

Brad Beal Perhaps the greatest shooter in our town’s history is also known for his benevolence. Some of the area’s best Ron Brown School high school basketball players play now in the Bradley Beal Elite program. Not only does he provide financial resources for these kids, but also he completed the NCAA’s certification process to coach them. Beal also won the NBA Community Service Award for helping schools in Washington, D.C.

Adam Wainwright

Bob Plager

Above: Plager sharing Stanley Cup joy with Chesterfield Youth hockey team Below: Plager speaking to new U.S. citizens Right: Plager visiting a patient at a local hospital

The only person who’s been a St. Louis Blues employee from Day 1 till now may not have a lucrative foundation, but perhaps no one has visited more schools, youth hockey practices or charity fundraisers. Whenever and wherever the Blues need him to represent the franchise – to shake hands and smile and to make people feel better about themselves – the organization can count on Plager.

Ozzie Smith A local legend, Smith was the spokesperson for a decade of Dining Out for Life, which benefited efforts here to fight AIDS. He helped with the 100th PGA Championship by creating PGA Reach Foundation, which works with the military and the inner city and also helps bring diversity to golf. From working with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to encourage reading, to showing up at Mike Bush’s camp for the hearing impaired, the Wizard has done it all to prove his philanthropic spirit.

Jason Motte We think of Motte’s biggest moment as taking the mound in 2011 to close the World Series versus the Rangers. However, he may actually be prouder of the Jason Motte Foundation – Let’s Strike Out Cancer, started when Motte had to sit out a season because of Tommy John surgery. He has since done his best to strike out cancer with fundraising events and has spent hours in the hospital rooms of kids fighting cancer.

Demetrious Johnson The pride of both McKinley Classical Leadership Academy High School and Mizzou had a five-year NFL career but has since been helping his hometown. At Thanksgiving, he provides turkeys for around 300 needy families. At Christmas, he arranges a party for 1,200 kids who otherwise wouldn’t be celebrating. And during the COVID-19 crisis, he’s arranged for families to be fed. Johnson is always there for St. Louis. LadueNews.com | juNe 26, 2020

By Mary Helen Gerst, Age 70 I have faithfully worked out at 20 Minutes to Fitness in Clayton since 2006. My workouts mean everything to me. With my doctor’s okay, they helped me recover from multiple joint surgeries, including reverse shoulder replacement. Keeping my core muscles strong also helps ease back pain brought on by scoliosis. The adrenalin rush after my workout makes me feel on top of the world! So you can imagine how devastating it was to learn 20 Minutes would be closing indefinitely due to Covid-19. Working out on MedX physical therapy machines under supervision is essential to my health and well-being. I rarely miss an appointment. After my studio closed, I lost some joint function. I also experienced debilitating back pain that is ordinarily controlled by my workouts. These sessions make me feel good about myself. Missing them affected both my body and my mental health. How excited and thankful I was to hear about the re-opening! In addition to being good for my health, 20 Minutes to Fitness is an especially GOOD PLACE TO TRAIN RIGHT NOW. The CDC recommends minimizing the time we spend in public, and you won’t find a more efficient way to stay fit. For one thing, a workout takes just 20 minutes! That’s it! While most people train just once a week, my condition makes it better for me to train twice a week.

Plus, it’s all by appointment – so there are no crowded waiting rooms, workout delays or shower facilities to worry about, either. There are NEVER MORE THAN FIVE PEOPLE TRAINING AT A TIME, and each one is accompanied by a personal coach – masked and at an appropriate social distance. Not only do the coaches sanitize and set the equipment, they carefully guide you through your training regimen so you train safely and effectively. If you’ve been hesitant to return to your gym, I suggest you give 20 Minutes to Fitness a try! YOUR FIRST SESSION IS FREE, and it includes a consultation where a physical therapist, exercise physiologist or professional trainer will review your health history and concerns. There are no contracts to sign or membership fees to pay.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be hooked. It’s great to be back!

For those uncomfortable training in masks, 20 Minutes to Fitness will provide a face shield for you to wear during your visit.

Just 20 minutes. Just once a week. For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its local studios in Clayton (314-863-7836), Chesterfield (636-536-1504), Sarasota or Tampa, or visit 20MinutesToFitness.com.

t Car Craft Auto Body, the word “craft” has far deeper significance than one can ascertain at first glance. It is the credo of a company that prides itself on unmatched working knowledge and a passion for its work that is shared by each employee, from the owner down. “Our owner, Jimmy Mason, started working at Car Craft at age 15,” says Vice President Garry Goddard Jr. “He bought the business in the early 1970s. We opened a location in Chesterfield Valley in 2007. In 2016, we opened our third location in south St. Louis County. We have four day-to-day retail locations, and in 2017, we opened our fleet division.” In 2020, Car Craft Auto Body opened its fourth location, in Hazelwood. Along with Car Craft Auto Body’s impressive growth over the last four decades, each site offers a team of top-level experts. “We hold more certifications than any [other] auto body company in Missouri,” Goddard explains. In addition, Car Craft Auto Body has two ASE [Automotive Service Excellence] master mechanics, each having completed all eight certifications. In May 2020, Car Craft Auto Body partnered with Holman Motorcars St. Louis, thus extending their certifications. Car Craft Auto Body is now proud to add Bentley, Lamborghini and several other brands. Its tow division, JDL Transport, is also proud to service these brands, providing roadside assistance when necessary.

very home experience is different, and everyone needs their home to be customized to their needs. Dana King Design Build Remodeling (DK) takes a concierge approach, helping clients build a space that works around what they value most. DK’s mission focuses on helping clients live better at home. “We look holistically at the experience in the home,” owner Dana King explains. “It’s not just about making things pretty and functional. It goes beyond that to having spaces that work for us and our life experiences.” King adds that DK works as a one-stop shop, from fabrics to cabinets, and is ideal for busy people who don’t want the headache of managing separate contractors, designers and vendors. “Working this way contains costs and time frames and creates the best outcome,” she says. “We’ve always been able to do [virtual consultations] for remote clients,” King says. “That works especially well during the

pandemic for clients who want optimal distancing.” For clients still looking for the in-home experience, DK follows all protocols, including use of masks and hand-sanitizer. “We’re finding 20 percent of clients enjoy virtual meetings, and we think it might continue after the pandemic because designing and coordinating virtually saves time.” Recorded virtual home tours also allow for the entire team to handle design and planning remotely. The team can be in the home virtually from their office, making collaboration smoother and enhancing accuracy. DK takes their mission to help people live better at home seriously through a holistic approach. The team is trained in the WELL building standard (design for wellness), Universal Design (design for all lifestyle and needs), Smart Home technology and interior design. “We design for what is best for your life,” King concludes. “We strive to be innovative, accessible and to create the best value.

Jewelryy

Romancing the Stone By Amanda Dahl | Photos courtesy of The Diamond Bar

C

elebrating its first year anniversary, The Diamond Bar has dazzled St. Louisans with its high-class shopping experience. “Working in Clayton for 15 years, I felt there needed to be a jewelry store that inspired clients to design,” owner Chris Phillips says. “My focus is creating stunning jewelry [that is] accessible in many different price ranges in an atmosphere that allows clients to relax and enjoy.” The Diamond Bar’s biggest differentiator lies in its sources. All products are made here in the U.S. and Phillips takes an active role in each handcrafted adornment. “I take the time to design and hand-select each diamond or gemstone that is set into our pieces,” Phillips details. “When clients come in, I tailor stone selections to their taste, showing a wide variety of price ranges.” Bridging the intersection between jewelry shops and online retailers, The Diamond Bar masterfully creates and restores your

prized pieces. That elevated level of care is seen at every step of the process. “Our industry lacks in educating all consumers,” Phillips believes. “In most industries, [you] can compare pricing for similar products; in jewelry, we cannot. There is a reason a piece is less expensive than another – and it is 100 percent due to its quality. We focus on education to show our clients those differences.” The amenities don’t end there either. If coming in for a simple repair, The Diamond Bar invites you to enjoy a drink on it. Sip on your chosen libation and peruse the glittering cases as the masters do their work on your beloved possession. “Creating your own piece ensures that no one else has one like it,” Phillips says. “Jewelry signifies important life events, which is why it should be a special piece just for you. We are bringing back the romance of jewelry. Our atmosphere, pricing and quality helps us raise the ‘Bar.’”

very space deserves to feel personal. Who you are speaks through all the details. Since its founding in 2006, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath has been dedicated to designing for people not awards. The Karr Bick mission is to create customer-inspired spaces that no one wants to leave. Their team, showroom, product selection, process and resources all work together that end. “Our focus is to create an experience for our clients. Everything from planning all the way through installation, we work hard to make them feel a nothing ordinary experience,” explains founder Jenny Rausch. “People come and ask us for Nothing Ordinary. That’s what they want.” One way Karr Bick works to create #NothingOrdinary spaces is by encouraging the use of color. The company is working with clients to broaden their color horizons and find the shades that speak to their distinctive personality through the Karr Bick Color Promotion.

“We are giving people an opportunity to go beyond black, white, gray and beige,” Rausch says. “They are braving into blues and greens. We’re doing a pink bathroom right now, a peacock blue laundry room and a couple kitchens with fantastic color.” The promotion is simple: All you have to do is pick a cabinet color and submit it through karrbick.com/whatismycolor. An award-winning designer will then work with the color you’ve chosen and design a stunning space around that shade. Other perks in the promotion include deals on participating vendors, including Dura cabinetry, Top Knobs, Brizo faucets, Insikerator hot water dispensers and more. The Karr Bick Color Promotion runs through the summer, but there’s never a bad time to bring vibrancy into your space. “It’s great to see people coming out and asking for color again,” Rausch says. “It’s a direct indicator of the mood – it’s positive.”

usan and Sam Hais – with their team of dedicated attorneys at Hais, Hais & Goldberger – have served in cases of divorce litigation, child custody and other complex settlements in the metro area for more than 20 years. “We help navigate the difficult times of coping with relationships that have gone astray and try to repair them, if possible, or move on if necessary,” Sam Hais says. During the global pandemic, Hais Hais & Goldberger has continued to serve clients with a full staff who are either working from home or on rotation, in order to observe proper social distancing procedures without furloughing any members of their team. “It’s challenging, but we’re managing,” Susan Hais says. “We have a team approach, [and] we all seem to be adapting to it.” “It’s important that lawyers experienced in family law are able to tell clients or potential clients the entire lay of the land – the beginning, middle and end of a family law action,” Sam Hais adds. “Lawyers have to be [able] to deal with those things that could be interruptions.” In these trying times, Susan and Sam Hais continue to love what they do professionally, personally and for the sake of, as they conclude, seeing that “justice remains a right – not a privilege.”

n a time of tumultuous change, with an uncertain economy, Eric Merchant with Trophy Properties & Auction offers sound guidance on a way to protect your assets. “One of the safest investments you can make in diversifying your portfolio – and one of the best investments to increase your enjoyment with friends and family in the great outdoors – is to purchase a piece of rural property,” Merchant says. His firm belief is evident in his own investment strategy. “We have owned residential, multi-family, industrial, commercial, and agricultural and recreational investment properties,” he details. “We’ve managed these properties for many years but we have found that we gain more enjoyment from the rural properties than all of the others combined. Rural property requires management as well and the Merchant Team can help with that, too.” As a result, The Merchant Team delivers exceptional solutions and service, even after closing, which are points of pride for Merchant. The large number of clients who remain in correspondence post-transaction verifies the real estate team’s

knowledgebase and commit to clientele. Merchant believes that outstanding services comes from hiring outstanding team members. He credits the continued success of the Eric Merchant Team to his coworkers. “My team is outstanding, loyal and hardworking,” Merchant describes. “I’ve always tried to promote from within and this affords me the opportunity to observe work ethic. I work long hours almost every day. I don’t have to – I want to. I love what I do and I take it very seriously.” The Merchant Team combines 50-plus years of experience. Its team members include: Bert Blake, Charlie Cagle, Tammy Eigenman, Danielle Fox, Serena Huntebrinker, April Sweeso and Steve Warbucks. Merchant believes that three daily goals contribute to the group’s success: “Show up, try not to screw up and put clients’ needs before our own,” he says. “This approach has been the reason for our success over three decades and why we have a steady stream of repeat clients!”

hat started as a metalsmithing course at University City’s Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design became a permanent change in Sara Patino’s career – and the establishment of Sara Patino Jewelry. “I just fell in love with it,” says Patino of making jewelry. “I’ve always loved working with jewelry and admiring these beautiful materials, but I’ve always noticed there isn’t a lot of talk about where [materials] come from [and] where they are sourced.” Materials are a big factor in Patino’s mission to create timeless jewelry made of recycled metals in order to minimize the environmental impact during production. “The way that metal is sourced is mainly two ways,” Patino explains. “You can buy from a source that gets the gold mined from an actual mining community – a lot of them are overseas, and then there is distribution in the U.S. – or you can just get recycled gold. The more I read about freshly mined gold and how it’s not always done in the cleanest way, the more I wanted to explore this recycled gold option.” Patino’s array of jewelry is handcrafted using 100 percent recycled gold, silver or brass. Of these materials, 90 percent are locally sourced, while the other 10 percent are still acquired from within the U.S. Patino also creates using ethically sourced gemstones. “You don’t have to take the natural resources we have; you can take what’s already existing and give it a second beautiful life,” Patino says. “So that’s what I thought was really awesome. It’s a bit more sustainable. There is a ton of old jewelry out there that needs a second home that’s not wanted.” Patino handcrafts earrings, necklaces, rings

and bracelets – each of her own design. “My background is in interior design and interior architecture, so a lot of that had the same kind of processes for what I do when I design jewelry,” Patino says. “What is the feel of the piece? What kind of shapes am I currently inspired by? I love looking at … patterns of fabrics or current color waves, interesting shapes and forms throughout interior design, and also just being outside in nature – kind of combining these ideas together.” Patino hopes the wearer of her simple-yetsophisticated creations adores her new accessories. “I want her to feel empowered and confident that she is wearing jewelry that makes a difference in the world,” Patino says.

A Delightful DISTRACTION By Pat Raven, Ph.D., with Julie Hess

constant parade of brilliant yellow, orange, white and pink daffodils in my garden helped me through the first two months of quarantine. We received 200 ‘Tete-a-Tetes’ as a present 15 years ago, and the daffodil became an annual addiction. Every year since, I’ve planted 200 or more daffodils in the fall. Now, we enjoy thousands of flowers over an eight- or nine-week period. The deer don’t touch them, and the daffodils start blooming at the tail end of February and keep going until the beginning of May. Till this year, with our past history of extensive travel, I’ve never previously had the chance to see a complete season of bloom before – and it was amazing! To have fresh, fragrant flowers on my table and bunches to share with homebound friends lifted my spirits greatly at a time when things were bleak amid the pandemic – just like a ray of sunshine between dark rain clouds. Gardeners are great at long-term planning. Large gardens take decades to build and a century

to mature. Since we all missed much of the 2020 spring planting season because the coronavirus made garden shopping difficult and mail-order companies ran out of plants and seeds, we need to get a jump on next season by ordering now. One of my favorite sources for bulbs is Brent and Becky’s, at 7900 Daffodil Lane in Gloucester, Virginia. Personal friends and delightful people, Brent and Becky Heath have grown and provided bulbs to public and private gardens for decades. Their catalogue is on the table next to me, slightly damp because of my drooling on the pages. You can see inventory and order online at brentandbeckysbulbs.com. If you order from Brent and Becky’s early, you can get what you want for fall planting, and you can save 10 percent off your order by paying by July 1 (hurry!) for September shipments. And certainly, there are many other online and local sources – just be sure to shop early. You can forget all your troubles as you do a deep dive into the thousands of daffodil varieties. Along with 13 divisions based on flower type, there are six windows of bloom time. Most big bag mixes contain primarily midseason cultivars and make a fine starting point, but as your tastes evolve, you’ll probably want to source season extenders. The American Daffodil Society’s DaffSeek database (daffseek.org) lists nearly 800 cultivars as very early and 232 as very late. With so much variety, use this downtime to become a daffodil expert!

&Soul By Bethany Christo | Photos by Courtney Lee Photography

Boda Clay’s handmade ceramic products enable you to slow down and savor everyday moments.

I

f there’s one thing we’ve all learned over the past few months, it’s that sometimes life forces you to slow down. Molly Svoboda, owner of Boda Clay and maker of its handmade ceramic home goods, learned this lesson herself a few years ago, when the then-19-year-old decided to turn her love of ceramics into an official business in August 2018. For the past few years prior, she was always go, go, go – dual enrolling in art classes at St. Louis Community College, babysitting, working other part-time jobs, finishing school and so forth – but she found herself spending up to 12 hours a day in the pottery studio. “Ceramics requires you to spend a lot of time with the work,” Svoboda says. “It totally slows you down, and the work turns out so much better when you have time to do so. There are ways to manipulate ceramics to speed up the process, but it always turns out better if you’re working with it on its own terms.” Boda Clay’s breadth of handmade clay products embodies “handmade objects for intentional living.” Meant to bring emphasis and joy to the small moments of everyday life, the pieces are meant for you to savor and relish the quotidian tasks that we often rush through –preparing and serving meals, enjoying your morning coffee, tending to houseplants.

I pull inspiration from everywhere: architecture, woodworking, nature – and I’ve always been superinspired by the Shakers...” – Molly Svoboda

Boda Clay’s dinnerware, home goods, planters, vases and more take humble and simple forms, according to Svoboda, but the subtle details of its neutral-toned, modernistic-yet-rustic aesthetic are “easy to miss but also easy to overthink,” she says, citing the placement of a handle or the rim of a cup. “I’ve always valued the power of objects manipulating human interaction. A big part of the design for me is the kind of clay I use. It has a heavier weight to it than, say, a porcelain cup. It’s meant to communicate durability and groundedness to those using it – which is what the act of making it does for me.” Svoboda is a one-woman show managing Boda Clay end to end, from bookkeeping to marketing, from designing to creating. The mathematical and logistical elements are necessary for running a business, but as with many artists, the designing and refining steps are her favorites. “I pull inspiration from everywhere: architecture, woodworking, nature – and I’ve always been superinspired by the Shakers

[religious sect most popular in the mid-19th century],” she says. “There’s something beautiful about sticking to what you’re good at and staying committed to it. Boda Clay was a lot of me coming to terms with realizing I just want to make bowls, and that’s enough.” Toeing the line between modern simplicity and a timeless, familiar feel, her pieces are meant to remind their users not only to slow down but also to place value on investing in handmade items that you’ll use for a long time. To that end, she’s recently teamed with Jordan Blackhurst of Dharma + Dwell, a St. Louis-based pop-up shop promoting thoughtful living via a variety of ecofriendly everyday essentials, to create a utility crock, match holder and soap dish. In addition to an online store and physical pop-ups such as Craftoberfest, May’s Night and Procure, Boda Clay is available around the metro area at East • West – the contemporary menswear and home goods boutique owned by her boyfriend that carries the widest selection of her items – as well as Union

Studio, Wildflowers, Flowers & Weeds, Gracie’s Shop at Laumeier Sculpture Park and Rudy’s Flower Truck. The now-21-year-old has been able to spend more time in the studio recently due to stay-athome orders, which has resulted in a widening of her connection with a network of ceramic makers in the area, including organizing the STL Mug Market series with Malaika Tolford of Place Value Pottery last fall. The spring event was postponed but will be rescheduled in the fall until further notice. Updates are available @stlmugmarket on Instagram or stlmugmarket.square.site. Connecting with local makers is equally as important as connecting her company’s mission with those who use the products. As one recent customer told Svoboda: “I can’t tell you how much your work brightens every day for our family. There is nothing more familial and lifegiving than food and the vessels that carry it.” Boda Clay, bodaclaystl.com

n early March, guests at the VIP opening reception of Leon Bronstein‘s exhibition, “Between the Fantastic and the Real,” previewed Bronstein’s collection of sculptures and drawings while talking to the artist about his work. On entering the gallery, guests were greeted by Bronstein, Richard and Kathie Winter, and Petruta Lipan, the executive director of the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. Bronstein addressed those in attendance, and after viewing both galleries, everyone was invited upstairs for a reception of cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The exhibition, presented by the Winter Family Collection, encompasses the past 40 years of Bronstein’s art. Although originally expected to run through May 31, the exhibition, like the museum, closed to all visitors on March 20 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This artistic process produces continuous joy and satisfaction, while simultaneously inflicting immense mental and emotional pain. There are so many moments when an artist laughs and cries at the same time, moments of intense inner discussion where the artist almost violently argues with his vision, and contrary moments when the artist embraces his vision with passion and acknowledgment. Art without struggle is not art. – LEON BRONSTEIN

ARTS SPEAK

Celebrating 25 Years By Bryan A. Hollerbach Photos courtesy of St. Louis ArtWorks

‌A

s St. Louis ArtWorks celebrates its silver anniversary, its executive director pauses both to reflect on the nonprofit’s past and to anticipate

its future. According to the mission statement on its website, ArtWorks seeks “to broaden educational and career opportunities for youth in the St. Louis region through apprenticeships in the arts and through community collaborations.” It also seeks “to create positive educational opportunities through art for youth through paid apprenticeships.” Priscilla Block, the nonprofit’s doubly outgoing executive director, first fondly relates the peregrinations of its earliest years, which sound more than a little … adventurous. “The first summer I was hired as E.D., 2001, we faced heat, rain and storms while having our different disciplines under tents powered by extension cords,” Blocks says of ArtWorks’ then-current location, where downtown St. Louis’ Citygarden now stands. “The one thing the teens really liked was their ability to go out to lunch anywhere downtown.” Block next details expansion-related relocations over time to Adams Elementary School in St. Louis’ Grove business district, the Centene Center for Arts and Education in that municipality’s Grand Center and, in 2012, St. Louis’ Old North neighborhood. “After three years there,” she says, “we still needed more space, so we decided on the place we are in now, in the Loop East [district], for our new home – all in one location, with lots of room to grow into an even brighter future.” Amid all of those peregrinations, Block recounts various victories for ArtWorks, the first involving a competition for social entrepreneurship sponsored by the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University. “We were the first nonprofit to win this competition, with our social venture Boomerang Press,” she says. “From there, teaching youth

entrepreneurship became ingrained in all our programming … ” Such programming, the website explains, “takes place after school and on weekends during the fall and spring, and five hours a day, five days a week for six weeks during the summer.” Professional artists mentor socially underserved 14- to 19-year-olds in developing not only art skills but also communication and general life skills. “Each program combines in-depth art instruction, employment training and life skills focused on personal health, fiscal literacy and environmental stewardship,” the website continues. “In all programs, teens earn a stipend, are required to have a bank account and attend financial literacy training. Activities such as client meetings, open house events and public sales give apprentices a chance to practice presentation and public speaking skills, and leave better prepared for the future with community contacts, résumés and a portfolio of work.” Although Block cites as ArtWorks’ “greatest success” winning the President’s Council on Youth in the Arts Award from First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House, she names the nonprofit’s

participants over time as “really the stars and the reasons for our successes”: “I have had the privilege of watching thousands of teens benefit from their time at ArtWorks, some who have come back to work for us as teaching artists now. “I think the program has lots of opportunities to grow in our location in the Loop East, as soon as we pass the economic challenges facing us today with the COVID-19 crisis. … With many of our alumni now adults with children of their own, I see them getting more involved with all parts of the organization’s future – not only as artists but board members, too.” One more 25th-anniversary challenge – a bittersweet one – looms yet. “I will be retiring in July after 20 years as the E.D., so bringing on a new E.D. will add new vitality and ideas to help realize the dreams of all involved,” Block says. “I’ve had a wonderful opportunity to make an impact on so many lives, and I look forward to watching [ArtWorks] grow in the future.” St. Louis ArtWorks, 5959 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, 314-899-9734, stlartworks.org

HOME COOKING

S’mores Chip Cookies Photo and recipe by Jacklyn Meyer

Ingredients  1 cup mini marshmallows  nonstick cooking spray  2 sticks unsalted butter  1 cup light brown sugar  ½ cup granulated sugar  2 eggs  1 tsp vanilla extract  2½ cups all-purpose flour  1 tsp fine sea salt  1 tsp cinnamon  1 tsp baking soda  1½ tsp baking powder  1 cup crushed graham crackers  1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, plus extra for garnish

Instructions 1. Turn on your broiler. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper, and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Array marshmallows on prepared pan. Place them under broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, until browned and puffy. Set aside. 2. Turn off broiler and set oven temperature to 375 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside. 3. In work bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter and sugars for about 4 minutes, until light and fluffy. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed, and add eggs, one at a time, incorporating well between each addition. Add vanilla extract and mix well. 4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, cinnamon, baking soda and

baking powder. Turn mixer on low and slowly add dry ingredients. Mix for about 1 minute, until flour is well-incorporated. 5. Add graham crackers, chocolate chips and toasted marshmallow, and fold by hand. (The marshmallows are very sticky after toasting, and I found the best way to remove them from the pan was by using a silicone spatula.) 6. Roll dough into about 2-tablespoon-size balls; use extra chocolate chips, and press two to three chips into tops of cookies. Place them on prepared pans about 1½ inches apart, since they spread. Bake 9 to 10 minutes. Let cool on pan for about 5 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely. These cookies will still be soft and chewy as they cool.

THE WINE LIFE By Stanley Browne

‌2019 CHÂTEAU DES MURAIRES SÉDUCTION ROSÉ Grapes: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Vermentino Location: Provence, France Owner: Bernard Magrez Approximate Retail Price: $24 Website: bernard-magrez.com TASTING NOTES: Color: Very pale pink with hues of salmon and honeysuckle leaves Aroma: Fragrantly floral at first, including a hint of lavender, but giving way to light red fruits and mild citrus Taste: Light and acidic, with delicious strawberry and Rainier cherry, and a long, seductive finish

A

fter the phenomenon of white zinfandel wielded its influence on the U.S., it took some time for many of us to recognize, embrace and finally adore dry rosé. Today, rosé has become so popular that a vast majority of wineries around the world include at least one dry rosé in their product lines. Because of a surge in popularity and production alike, consumers can appreciate a vast array of styles of rosé. In Provence, Southern France, which has been producing

rosé far longer than most other regions of the world, one can find a paler, more delicate style of rosé. The winery of Château des Muraires there has dedicated itself to producing elegant, dry rosé. Its flagship wine, Séduction, definitely earns its name. Its pale color and tantalizing aroma draw you in, while the light-bodied palate and lingering finish entice you to stay. Every year it’s released, it sells out quickly, and those who delay in savoring it often miss out. Château des Muraires ranks as just one holding in the vast oenological empire of French wine magnate Bernard Magrez. Magrez may well be best known for his ownership of several Bordeaux estates, including Château La Tour Carnet and Château Pape Clément, though he also owns many other wineries throughout France and around the globe. Food Pairings: Rare seared, encrusted tuna, baconand-mushroom flatbread, mushroom risotto, mild soft cheeses, beef tenderloin with red wine reduction, seared duck and truffles all ably complement Séduction.

MOST PEOPLE 55+ DON'T GET ENOUGH EXERCISE. WHY YOU SHOULD GET STARTED TODAY. BY: DR. BETH TEMPLIN, PT, DPT, GCS GERIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPIST

AND SO CAN YOU! HelpAVarietyKid.org

82    June 26, 2020 | LadueNews.com

Most of the people I meet have the best intentions of staying active or starting a new exercise routine, but it's harder than it sounds. First, you have to find the motivation to start and then you have to find the staying power to continue with a program. Part of the problem can be finding the right exercise program to meet your needs. Sometimes there are so many options out there, that you get overwhelmed and then end up not making a choice at all. For some people, there are more reasons or excuses not to exercise than there are to exercise. I have to admit, I have been in that same boat myself. What I've learned and what I want to share with you are some of the most common reasons people 55 and older do not exercise. Previous bad experience. Maybe you tried a class and it was so big you couldn't see the instructor, or the music was so loud you couldn't hear the instructor. Or you were just starting out and had a hard time keeping up with the other people in the class and you felt "old" and out of place. If you don't feel welcomed or comfortable exercising, it's hard to stick with a program. Fear of making it worse. I know many adults 55+ who are worried exercise will make their back pain or their arthritis worse. They are concerned about their balance or worried their endurance is lacking and they don't want to embarrass themselves in front of the other class members. Exercise can actually help you manage or improve all of these issues, once you find the right routine. Being too old. Some of the people I meet don't believe that regular exercise will help someone "their age". Age really is just a number and it doesn't matter if you've never exercised before. Exercise is key for staying active and independent, so you don't start missing out on the good things in life.

Unsure it will work. What if you finally try to exercise and you don't get better? What if exercise just won't work for you? My answer to this would be, what have you got to lose? What could you possibly gain if you took a chance on yourself? Imagine how great it will feel to have more energy and confidence. Fear of the unknown. It takes a lot of guts to try something new. Especially when you're not sure what to expect. Will you be able to keep up with the rest of the class? Will you be sore? Will it be too hard? We work with people who feel this way every day. It's what we do. We help you overcome some of those fears and doubts in order to help you stay active and healthy. Exercise is Medicine! Especially for adults whose independence and ability to fully enjoy their retirement is directly linked to their activity and fitness levels. And it's never too late to start. So if you've been putting off starting that exercise routine, there's no better time than now to step up and try. Don't let time keep slipping away because you're nervous. Let us help you to live the life you should be living. We offer Concierge Physical Therapy and Private Training sessions in your home. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never exercised before or if it's just been awhile. Let our team of experts help you get on a path to a healthier version of yourself today. Dodell says St. Louis’ Bar K will be similar to the Kansas City facility, but this second location will feature a 10,000-square-foot indoor, off-leash dog park in addition to an outdoor park. While dogs play in the park, owners can visit the restaurant and bar knowing their pets are taken care of, Dodell says. “Dogtenders,” or trained supervisors, stand watch to keep the park safe and clean. Bar K will serve craft cocktails and locally brewed beers, and its restaurant will offer a casual menu of affordable and healthy foods, according to the press release. Pets can also enjoy a treat from the Food for Dogs section of the menu, curated with help from Purina’s pet nutritionists. Dodell says it’s all part of creating a “brand-new experience for people and dogs.” “What they have created in Kansas City and will bring to St. Louis

is a community gathering place for dog lovers that is unlike anything else,” said Bill Broun, vice president of personalization and business development at Purina, in the press release. “Purina has been involved with Bar K from very early on,” Dodell says. “They’re actually a small investor in our company and believe in what we’re doing, so they were very excited to have a Bar K in their hometown.” Dodell says Purina being headquartered in the metro area was part of St. Louis’ pull for the business, as was the proximity to Kansas City and the warehouse property available for repurposing. “We’re always looking for unique and creative concepts for our properties, and Bar K fits this site perfectly,” said Phil Hulse of Clayton’s Green Street St. Louis, the owner and developer of the property, in the press release. The partnership with Purina goes beyond food to provide a dedicated space for pet adoption events at Bar K’s Petfinder Park, named after the Purina-owned pet-adoption website petfinder.com. Dodell says local pet rescue organizations will be invited to use the space. “We find if we give people a cocktail and a puppy, we can close the deal pretty quickly,” he says with a chuckle. “We’ve gotten well over a hundred dogs adopted at Petfinder Park events in Kansas City.” Dodell says Bar K has collaborated with multiple Kansas City businesses and is looking to do the same with metro area businesses. His team is in the process of identifying local partners, and he asks that those interested in collaborating reach out. Bar K operates as a membership club to ensure “all our pups are properly socialized and vaccinated,” according to its website. Annual membership costs $225 for your first dog and $25 for each additional dog. Throughout the summer season (May through September), day passes will be available for $10 for one dog on weekdays and $15 on weekends, plus $5 per additional dog. People without dogs may enter for free anytime. As of May 15, Bar K in Kansas City has reopened with a number of precautions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Dodell says his team will monitor the situation in St. Louis as they approach project completion in early 2021. He expects Bark K will continue finding innovative ways for humans and dogs to socialize and will adapt as needed to make that happen.
