CONTENTS SOCIETY WHETHER WE REALIZE IT OR NOT, AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER, WE become an advocate. Be it on behalf of oneself during a job interview, or favoring a colleague’s idea at a business meeting. These usually are random instances that occur as we go about our day. There also is a special breed of advocates: the honest-to-goodness, bona-fide kind who make it their life’s work to stand up for what they believe in. This week, we present a few local women who do just that: Kimberly Ritter, a meeting-and-conference industry veteran, is using her leverage to help protect young women from sex trafficking. Teach for America’s Brittany Packnett is standing up as a voice for the next generation. Cindy Levin is involved in a grassroots movement to bring an end to poverty. Circuit Court Judge Judy Draper works to increase understanding among different ethnic groups beyond the courtroom. And then, there’s soon-to-be 99-year-old Frankie Muse Freeman, whose narrative and achievements can fill this entire edition of LN—and then some. Let the stories of these women not only lift you up, but also—and more importantly—ignite the advocate in you.

BY DAVID ANDERSON
IDS ROCK CANCER, MARYVILLE University’s innovative music therapy program, recently held a special concert at The Sheldon. A packed house enjoyed an evening of music, courtesy of St. Louis’ own British Invasion tribute band, Flaming Pie, whose repertoire transported guests back to the glory days of The Beatles. Members of the St. Louis Symphony, as well as other local musicians, also lent their talents to the show. Emotional high points included appearances by Kids Rock Cancer patients, who performed their own songs on stage, with the help of music therapist Tracie Sandheinrich.

Chesterfield Physician Delivers A Recipe For Weight Loss
Dr. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).
NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.
Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.
Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat
burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.
Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

SOCIE T Y SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM
Senufo Art and the Modern World
T
BY LISA WATSON
HIS SUNDAY, THE SAINT LOUIS ART Museum (SLAM) will open its first African art exhibition in more than 15 years with Senufo: Art and Identity in West Africa. “I’m thrilled to re-launch our special exhibitions program for African art in this way,” notes Nichole Bridges, associate curator in charge, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. “We reinstalled our permanent African arts galleries in 2012 with the expansion of the museum, and an exhibition that allows our visitors to really focus on one small area in Africa is really a treat, because we will see extraordinary depth and a huge range of art forms.” Created in the ‘three corners’ region of West Africa that spans Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso, Senufo art traditionally is considered to have very specific geographic origins, but its effects on modern art are indelible, Bridges says. “That’s a narrative that underscores the exhibition: the way we as Europeans and Americans have encountered these areas, and how we’ve learned to understand them over the years.” Europeans first learned of Senufo art and poro, a men’s
society for which much of it was commissioned, through Colonial encounters, but avant-garde artists of the early 20th century found inspiration in them, including Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger, Bridges says. “They were looking at these dramatically foreign forms, and that’s what helped transform the trajectory of modern art as we know it.” The exhibition takes visitors through that history in informative detail, Bridges says. “Even though at this point in the 21st century, we are interested in understanding these artworks and their makers and users in West Africa, the fact is those objects wouldn’t be here without Colonial history, which is a very mixed history. It’s the reason those objects are here, and the Modernist movement is the reason these works are included in encyclopedic art museums like SLAM,” she says. “But as more sophisticated audiences in the 21st century, we very much value the original context of those works.

KIMBERLY RITTER
Targeting A Taboo

imberly Ritter has been in the hotel management and meeting planning business for more than two decades, but it was only in recent years she realized a dark secret in the industry: human trafficking. Sex crimes against women and children are taking place at hotels across the U.S. and around the world, Ritter notes. “It’s very common. It’s happening every day, all hours of the day. It’s happening right now.” As a senior account manager at Nix Conference & Meeting Management, Ritter knew she could do something about it. It all started eight years ago, while she was booking a conference meeting for the Sisters of St. Joseph. The nuns had asked her to help them fight sexual exploitation. That’s when Ritter and her Nix colleagues, Molly Hackett and Jane Quinn, researched the issue. “We realized we have the professional resources to travel the U.S. and the world, and inform people that sex trafficking does happen in every hotel,” Ritter explains.

“IT’S ABOUT BRINGING AWARENESS TO YOUR CHILD THAT THERE ARE PREDATORS ONLINE...TRAFFICKERS WILL LURE THEM IN BY SAYING, COME BE A MODEL. YOU’RE A GREAT SINGER/DANCER. I’M GOING TO MAKE YOU A STAR…”
Soon, the trio launched the Exchange Initiative, an organization providing resources to end sex trafficking. Kids are being preyed upon via the Internet, with 13 being the average age of entry into the sex trade, Ritter notes. “Women and kids are being sold for sex online. There’s a site called backpage.com. You can buy a car, you can buy a refrigerator—and you can buy a child for sex—on that website. As I looked at the kids for sale for sex on that site, I realized that I could recognize the hotel rooms they were in because I have been in so many hotels through being a meeting planner,” explains Ritter, who works with hundreds of hotels around the world. Through the Exchange Initiative, Ritter and her colleagues began asking citizens to send photos of hotel rooms that could be placed in a database for law enforcement to use to narrow victims’ rescue time, maximize officers’ safety, and increase the conviction time for offenders. “It almost became overwhelming when people realized they could send us these pictures, and we were inundated with calls for years,” Ritter says. The Exchange Initiative also is teaming up with
industry experts to soon launch a smartphone app, where the hotel room photos can be uploaded for use against sex trafficking nationally and internationally. The organization also raises awareness and education about sex trafficking through a national conference called Ignite, speaking engagements at colleges, and partnerships with like-minded corporations and organizations. “We are the corporate entity that fights this. The goal is to engage other corporations to fight it, as well,” Ritter says. “It takes every stakeholder to fight this atrocity.” For its efforts, the organization has witnessed an increased awareness in St. Louis that it hopes other cities will mirror. “Truly, prevention is the key,” Ritter notes. “It’s about bringing awareness to your child that there are predators online. If
you can’t see the person you are friends with, they may not be who they seem to be. Traffickers will lure them in by saying, Come be a model. You’re a great singer/dancer. I’m going to make you a star… And so many of these girls trust and believe these traffickers because they are at tender ages.” Even victims who act like they want to be part of it are being coerced, often through violent threats or drug addiction, she adds. “And there are no socioeconomic or geographic boundaries—victims come from everywhere.” Ritter says it’s easy to turn your head and pretend sex trafficking isn’t happening. “But once you know about it, you have to do something about it.” After all, that’s what she did. “Every woman and child deserves to live a healthy life, and they are being victimized. I can’t stand for it.”

BRITTANY PACKNETT
B
RITTANY PACKNETT KNEW from a young age that she wanted to help empower young people. As the daughter of two educators, she was “raised in a tradition of justice.” Her mother, Gwendolyn Packnett, is the assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs at University of Missouri – St. Louis, and her father was a college professor and a church leader. Packnett, a native of North St. Louis County, taught third grade in Washington, D.C., and worked in federal education policy and advocacy for low-income students as part of Teach For America. Today, Packnett is the executive director of Teach For America in St. Louis and also is involved with the Ferguson Commission and President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. She’s been passionate about justice and equity since she was young, but these days, her goals are more nuanced and clear. “Justice and equity should exist in the world, and it’s something we need to make a personal investment in,” she says. Packnett’s been focused on the issue of educational equity in St. Louis. As an alumna of John Burroughs School and Washington University, she believes every St. Louis student should have the chance to succeed. At Washington University, she says, the average ACT score of an admitted student is 32; but the high-school students in nearby public schools are only achieving a score of 16 and 18. “It shouldn’t just be the kids who go to schools like (Burroughs) that get to go to Washington University,” Packnett says. After the movements surrounding the August shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Packnett got involved with the activism, calling it an “extension” of her passion for justice. “The voices of young people should be at the table. My generation and the younger generations should be represented in their views and frustrations,” she says. She calls her appointment as the youngest member of the Ferguson Commission a “real honor.” “It’s a lot of work, but it’s the right kind of work for our region at this time,” she explains. Packnett considers her work with Teach For America and the Ferguson Commission based on justice and equity. “Teach For America is about equity for children; Ferguson is about equity for the region,” she says. “It’s all about determining a brighter and far better future.” Packnett calls her ongoing efforts with the Ferguson Commission “empowering ” and “encouraging” because so many different kinds of people in St. Louis have come together for one cause. “I really want to see far stronger relationships 26

The chapters meet monthly and provide advocacy training, she adds. In July, Levin and five fellow Results volunteers will head to Washington, D.C., for an ‘activist boot camp’ at an international conference. Along for the ride will be two ‘little lobbyists,’ her 9- and 11-year-old daughters. “The first time I met my representative, I was very nervous,” she recalls,
“but (the girls) walk in like they own the place. And they can—they’re citizens, too.” During the trip, the group also will take letters written by community members to Congress—and they can deliver your letter, too. At a special event on July 9 at Schlafly Bottleworks, Levin invites people to learn more about Results, and write letters they would like to send to congressmen. “We have incredible power to use our voices to change the world,” she says.

O L D I N G H E R NEW B O R N daughter in her arms was a moment of awakening for Cindy Levin. She couldn’t imagine there were children around the world going hungry and living in poverty. That’s why she became an advocate for Results. “It’s an advocacy organization that allows me to use my voice to help more people out of hunger and poverty than I could reach with my own two hands.” Levin was first drawn to advocacy work about 12 years ago. “I was a mechanical engineer, and I found the best part of my day was when I was volunteering with a food kitchen and helping hungry people,” she says. In 2003, Levin became a stay-at-home mom. “That’s when I got introduced to advocacy,” she explains. “I wrote to my congressman in the middle of night when my baby woke up and I couldn’t go back to sleep.” By 2007, Levin was making a career out of being an advocate, serving on the board, and later on the fundraising staff, of Results. She has helped volunteers stage grassroots fundraising events that educate communities about the mission of Results and help fund its work. And today, she once again is serving on Results’ board through the marketing committee, developing branding and strategy to help propel the 35-year-old global organization into the future. “We want to end poverty by our 50th anniversary,” she notes. This year, Levin’s influence on the U.S. Congress has led to big results in the form of a $1-billion pledge in the next 40 years to Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI). “The health of kids is so vitally important,” she says. “This will reach 300 million more kids with immunizations by 2020, and save more than 5 million more lives.” Levin believes so strongly that moms make such good advocates, she decided to write the book on it. “It will have some inspiring stories about moms doing this kind of work, and a how-to guide on how to call your representatives, write a letter, go to a lobby meeting, and take these kinds of [advocacy] actions,” she explains. People can get involved right now in the St. Louis community, Levin says, through her local chapter, which specializes in global poverty (by advocating to ease world hunger and the spread of HIV/AIDS, among others); or through another local chapter focusing on domestic poverty (by advocating for

aving a baby is one of the most special events in a family’s life. That’s why St. Luke’s Hospital strives to provide each mom-to-be with the experience she and her family desire. Through a newly renovated maternity floor featuring private birth care suites, and an on-site staff of specialists, the hospital aims to deliver on the promise of a personalized birth experience. “We want to give parents and babies their best start,” notes Kelley Swinkels, director of nursing in maternity and newborn services. On the hospital’s newly remodeled maternity floor, 26 spacious suites provide expectant moms with the rare option to labor, deliver, recover and receive post-partum care for themselves and their babies all in the same room. Among amenities are: a sofa sleeper for dad or another family member to spend the night; free wi-fi, a flat-screen TV and a DVD player; a private bathroom and hotel-style room service. Some of the suites also offer whirlpool labor
tubs for women choosing unmedicated, natural labors, with nurses trained in the proper techniques standing by to provide support. “We try to offer options, because it’s not about what we want, but about what the patient and her family want,” Swinkels says. “As long as it’s safe for mother and baby, and their physician agrees, we will do it.” For moms who choose to breastfeed, St. Luke’s has International Board Certified Lactation Consultants who offer one-on-one care, instruction and support, and breastfeeding equipment and supplies in the hospital’s on-site Lactation Center. “We have a 90 percent breastfeeding rate among patients, far above the national average of 79 percent,” Swinkels notes. S A MOM OF THREE LITTLE ONES (WITH THE MOST RECENT DELIVERY JUST MONTHS AGO), I CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY GONE ARE THE DAYS of giant, shapeless muumuus and tent dresses as maternity wear. My most consistent style advice for moms-to-be is: You don’t even have to wear ‘maternity’ clothes. Of course, you need a few great pairs of maternity jeans, but there are so many great blousy tops, tunics and stretchy maxi dresses (just to name a few) that style doesn’t have to take a back seat when you are rocking a baby bump! Together with my ‘Sarah’ team (photographer Sarah Conard, and moms-to-be Sarah Hansen and Sarah Felling), we set out to prove our point during an outing at Kirkwood Farmers Market. {LadueNews.com} JUNE 26, 2015

OR AN ALREADY SLEEP-DEPRIVED NEW PARENT, A colicky baby can be a challenge. “Caring for a colicky baby can be extremely stressful for parents,” says Dr. Ken Haller, a SLUCare pediatrician on staff at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “No parent wants to see their infant suffer, and the cry of a colicky baby is very painful for Mom and Dad. I remind parents that, as painful as colic seems, it doesn’t cause any long-term problems. I also let them know that if they are feeling stressed, they should ask for help and take care of themselves.” Colic is clinically defined as repeated episodes of fussing, crying and/ or irritability that last for three or more hours a day and occur on three or more days per week for three or more weeks. “Colic peaks around 6 to 8 weeks of age and typically resolves by 4 months of age,” Haller says. “Colic is actually quite common, and is seen in between 5 and 19 percent of newborns.” The cause of infant colic is a mystery in most cases. Parents should talk to their baby’s doctor, noting if the crying is accompanied by severe vomiting, blood in the stools, ongoing watery stools or a decrease in the number of wet diapers. These symptoms may indicate specific medical issues needing treatment. However, for the many cases in which the baby simply cries and cries, there are some strategies that may help. “Every infant is different with what is most soothing to them, so a trial of multiple things would be helpful,” says Courtney Moore, a pediatric nurse at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “A few examples would be swaddling the infant, making shushing sounds in the ear, slight swinging movement, sucking on a pacifier, and the side/ stomach position, mimicking the position they were in while you were pregnant.” These techniques, suggested by both Moore and Haller, were developed by Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block. Parents of colicky babies also need support. “This may be having parents take ‘shifts’ so one can go out to shop, go for a walk or just take a nap while the other takes care of the baby,” Haller says. “This is not about being selfish, but about being able to survive long enough to help someone else. And when you’re taking care of a colicky baby, do what you need to do to take care of yourself so you can be fully there for your baby.” Moore adds, “If you are having trouble handling the excessive crying and feel as though you may hurt your infant, please seek help from your doctor or call a helpline.” {LadueNews.com} June 26, 2015

ONGRATULATIONS! YOUR PREGNANCY AND LABOR ARE OVER, and your baby is here. Now, what? Let’s talk about what to expect over the first two to four days, while Mommy and baby are both in the hospital. Immediately after birth, you can expect your baby to be examined and assessed by a nurse. She will assure that your baby (let’s assume he is a healthy baby boy) is making a successful transition from intrauterine life to the real world. She will take his temperature, be sure he is warm, and examine him from head to toe. At Mercy Hospital, the nursery nurse comes to you and performs this exam in the labor room where you just gave birth. You will be able to hold your baby and make skin-to-skin contact. You will be able to feed your baby and you will be encouraged to breastfeed him. An ointment will be gently placed onto your son’s eyes to prevent a serious infection. Finally, the nurse will give your son an intramuscular injection of Vitamin K. While there is some controversy about the need for Vitamin K, the standard of care for decades has been to give newborns a dose of Vitamin K, to help prevent bleeding. Without this dose, babies are at a small (0.25 to 1.5 percent) risk of bleeding, which can be significant and occasionally fatal. Just as there are parents who refuse to vaccinate their children, there are parents who refuse this scientifically proven preventive measure and, in my professional opinion, place their babies at risk. Full discussion of this matter is beyond the scope of this article, but you should discuss this with your obstetrician and baby’s pediatrician if you have any reservations about the Vitamin K dose. Not so many years ago, most babies spent much of their time in the newborn nursery, with occasional visits to mom and family in mom’s room. The reverse is now the standard, with mom and baby spending almost all of their time together in her room. At Mercy Hospital, we practice ‘couplet nursing,’ with both Mom and baby cared for by the same nurse. This togetherness fosters bonding and the initiation of good feeding practices. Prior to discharge, usually at 24 hours of age, your son will be screened for congenital heart disease. This is done by measuring the oxygen amount in his blood with a small device attached briefly and comfortably to his hands and feet. We will screen your baby’s hearing, as well. Both of these screenings are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and mandated by the state of Missouri. Finally, on the day of discharge, a few drops of your son’s blood will be taken from his heel and submitted to the Missouri state lab to screen for many inherited metabolic diseases. You will be notified of the results of the heart and hearing screening just after they are finished, and of the metabolic screen by your baby’s doctor shortly after discharge. This may seem like a lot of care and screening for an apparently normal healthy newborn, but each of these interventions has been shown to provide safety to you and your new family.

FRANKIE MUSE FREEMAN
A Champion of Civil Rights
RANKIE MUSE FREEMAN WILL BE 99 years old in November, but nothing gets in the way of her passion for civil rights and her efforts to end discrimination. A landmark attorney both locally and nationally, Freeman is the first woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, and currently serves as a member of the Commission on Presidential Scholars. Freeman decided to make civil rights her life’s work after growing up in then-segregated Danville, Virginia. “We had to accept the segregation, but we didn’t approve of it,” she says. “One of the things that had to be changed was the law.” Freeman started at Hampton Institute, which her mother had attended, and decided then that she would become a lawyer. She was admitted to Howard University Law School in 1944, and received her degree in 1947, graduating second in her class. During that time, she met her husband, Shelby, who was from St. Louis, and they soon were married. The couple moved to St. Louis in 1948, where Freeman wrote to several local law firms. After not hearing back from them, she decided to open her own private practice. She became the lead attorney in the 1954 landmark NAACP case against the St. Louis Housing Authority, which ended legal segregation of public housing. In the 1960s, Freeman was nominated by President Johnson as a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and, once approved, was reappointed by presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter. “President Johnson wasn’t the first one to consider me, though,” she says. “I was at the White House on November 17, 1963, and told I was being considered by President Kennedy; but he was assassinated the next week. I thought it was all over with.” In March, Freeman heard from President Johnson. “He told me he had talked to the Urban League and the NAACP about me, but he didn’t tell them what position I was being considered for,” she says. “They would’ve given him the name of a man.” She ended up serving on the commission for 16 years. Since then, “I’ve been busy, busy, busy for years,” she says. “I’m blessed because my family has always been so supportive.” Freeman’s legal career in St. Louis spanned more than 60 years, full of “interesting work,” she says. These days, Freeman lives in an apartment in the Central West End, and spends her time visiting with family and staying involved in the Urban League and the NAACP. She’s a trustee at her church, the Washington Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where she has been a member since 1949. Freeman’s accomplishments and honors are numerous, and include being inducted to the 42

“I DID WHATEVER I FELT I HAD TO DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.” National Bar Association’s Hall of Fame, receiving the Springarn Medal from the NAACP, and being inducted to the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. Most recently, a star was installed in the St. Louis Walk of Fame in the Delmar Loop honoring her. Despite all of these accolades, when you ask Freeman what her biggest accomplishment is, she’ll tell you something completely different. “My family,” she says. “I have been able to be a civil rights lawyer, a wife and a mother all at the same time. When my husband died in 1991, we had
been married 52 years, and that was a blessing. I’ve accomplished some things, but not without the support of my family.” President Obama appointed her to the Commission on Presidential Scholars earlier this year, and it’s kept her busy. In fact, she made the journey to Washington, D.C., to see the 141 presidential scholars be recognized earlier this week. “We met in Washington in April and we selected the scholars,” she says. The overall theme in Freeman’s life seems to be “blessed,” a word that comes up time and time again in a conversation with her. “I worked with all kinds of groups if they were having a situation with discrimination based on either race, gender or anything else,” she says. “I did whatever I felt I had to do to make a difference.”

JUDGE JUDY DRAPER
Establishing A Connection
PHOTO COURTESY OF ST. LOUIS COUNTY CIRCUIT COURTS
W
BY LISA WATSON
HILE THERE WASN’T one moment when Judge Judy Draper decided she wanted to pursue a career in law, she can trace the roots of her desire to be a fighter for justice back to her days as a child in California. Born in Seoul, Korea, during the Korean War, Draper is the child of an AfricanAmerican soldier and a South Korean mother. The family moved to the U.S. when Draper was about 6, and she learned English quickly, often serving as an interpreter for her mother. “We would walk to the grocery store,” she recalls. “On the way there and on the way back, sometimes we had confrontations because my mother was Asian and she was holding the hand of a little brown child…Back in the ’60s, Koreans weren’t known, and the neighborhoods were segregated. Asians weren’t living in integrated society; they were in Chinatowns… “It hurt me to see someone throwing rocks at my mom and calling her names. I thought, That’s not right. Someone needs to know about that. That’s where I got my sense of what’s right and wrong, and of justice: from wanting to protect her from those kinds of ills in society. I remember thinking that one day I would be in a position to make sure they wouldn’t be able to hurt other people with that sort of attitude.” So it was that Draper went to Howard University School of Law, where she graduated in 1980. That’s also where she met her husband of 36 years, Judge George Draper III, who has served on the Missouri Supreme Court since 2011. They first moved to his native St. Louis shortly after they were married. Today, Judge Judy Draper is an associate circuit judge, where—much like another well-known Judge Judy (of TV fame)—she hears a civil docket, including landlord/tenant disputes, restraining orders, breach of contract and small claims cases. “Whatever she hears, that’s what I hear. Some of our cases come to us, and they want to go to Judge Judy—but sometimes my cases are more interesting than hers.” Before being appointed to her current position in 2004, Draper worked as a prosecutor for the City of St. Louis, an attorney for Monsanto’s law department in the International/Corporate section, an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law, and as law clerk to the Hon. Clyde Cahill, a federal district judge. “He was one of my strongest mentors and another reason I wanted to emulate what judges do,” she says. Draper later worked as an attorney in private practice and as a municipal court judge for the cities of Northwoods and Berkeley. Beyond her daily work, Draper has actively promoted understanding among groups that sometimes face obstacles to equality: She is a member
“I REMEMBER THINKING THAT ONE DAY I WOULD BE IN A POSITION TO MAKE SURE THEY WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO HURT OTHER PEOPLE WITH THAT SORT OF ATTITUDE.” of the Mound City Bar Association, the Women’s Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis, the National Association of Women Judges, and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. One of the founding members of the Missouri Asian American Bar Association, she chaired its annual ‘Unity Dinner’ for three years. “I suggested that we have a dinner and invite everyone in the community—not just one group or another, but all groups,” she recalls. To everyone’s surprise, the Asian-American and African-American attorneys at the dinner found many similarities in their struggles. “There were instances where the similarities were uncanny in terms of how AsianAmerican lawyers and African-American lawyers were viewed in court, how they were competing for clients, how the law students felt isolated,” she says. “Sometimes it was as simple as, Where can we find the kind of food that our mothers gave us? It was the simple things about life.” Draper also was appointed as Honorary Consul to the Republic of Korea, a role she describes as being a ‘goodwill ambassador.’ There are many
others, both in Korea and in the U.S., who like Draper are “children of war,” and who have been isolated or seen obstacles to their personal and professional progress, she says. “It was an honor as a child of war to have survived in this great country and been blessed to have been a part of the American Dream. They asked me if I would be a bridge to the Korean community, because the first generation of Koreans here has done very well, but their associations are very isolated. They have a Korean town, and stay to their own restaurants and stores. Their connections with me as a Korean American judge will hopefully help them come out and be a part of the process here in St. Louis.” As honorary consul, Draper enjoys the opportunity to give back, and to encourage students to overcome obstacles, while sticking to the principles taught to them by their parents. “I had people to inspire me—Judge Cahill has been inspiring, Frankie Freeman has been inspiring. Just because you don’t have advantages, you can still plow through and continue standing and have hope.” {LadueNews.com} June 26, 2015

Unlike larger firms, which have lawyers practicing in a variety of legal fields, Hais, Hais and Goldberger’s
Hais, Hais & GoldberGer, P.C.
exclusive focus on family law allows its partners to support its clients both in the courtroom and out. “You can be tough in court and fight your hardest, but always be kind to clients,” says founding partner Susan Hais. “A lot of law firms forget that, and think as if their clients are just a file. I’ve seen lawyers yell at their clients. Instead of adding to the problem, we try to support and guide them, and solve it with them. We’re on their team, and they can rely on us.” Hais, Hais and Goldberger attorneys address every clients’ individual needs, and see the results of their hard work. Hais estimates she can count on one hand the number of times her firm has lost a case. Frequently winning in higher courts, she says, is a good way to measure the firm’s accomplishments—but it’s not the only way. Clients often refer friends and family to the firm, which has contributed to its long and successful track record in the area. The firm’s attorneys regularly hear from former clients, thanking the firm for helping them during their time of need. It’s these people—not files or cases— whom the firm serves.

LONG A HUSHED STREET within downtown Clayton, 10 Sumac Lane seemed unimposing at first glance. Yet Travis Noble, a high-profile criminal attorney, trained his gaze once more on the residence and saw potential. As the home’s new owner, Noble’s vision to transform the property began at the heavy oak antique doors that beckon visitors inside. His design instincts led him to enhance the modern organic architectural details found throughout the expansive living space, blending them in seamlessly with the home’s contemporary architecture. For instance, a cozy, enticing den and double fireplace connect the home’s two main rooms, which are framed by angular floorto-ceiling windows and a vaulted ceiling, and enhanced with the help of dramatic light fixtures. Noble painted the interior spaces and added upgrades, but the details don’t stop there. He paid homage to St. Louis by incorporating the work of local designers and artists, turning the home into an art gallery of sorts. Highlights include works by up-and-coming artist Ted Collier, as well as pieces by SJ Hammack and Bradford (Brad) Kessler. The basement has been transformed into a playground for both kids and grownups, with the addition of a fullyequipped arcade, while the outdoor area serves as a private retreat that also can host outdoor gatherings. A fire pit, hot tub and flat-screen television complete the outdoor amenities. From the fantastic to the serene, the combination of art and culture fill this no-longer-unassuming abode, converting it into a showpiece, as well as home sweet home for its discriminating owner.

XPERIENCE CITY LIFE IN LUXE style from The Private Residences at The Chase Park Plaza. Towering over the Central West End, you get frontrow seats to the beauty of Forest Park, with immediate access to St. Louis’ distinct neighborhoods. The 2-story abode offers premium views from its expansive terrace, and the gorgeous northeastfacing floor-to-ceiling windows. With entrances to both floors, the more than 4,100-square-foot spread is decadent in design, from its coffered ceilings and double-sided open stone fireplace to the first-floor master suite. The residence was custom-built, blending well with the Art Deco style of the Chase Tower, and the Italian Renaissance architecture of the historic building. Modern amenities elevate the home within this big city-styled skyscraper.
This 4-bedroom, 3-full and 1-half bathroom home is listed in the Central West End.

Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty
8077 Maryland Ave., 753-1899, steveandcarolyn.com The real-estate market has been fast and furious this year, so far. My partner, Carolyn Malecek, and I don’t anticipate it slowing down in the foreseeable future. With low inventory and interest rates, it is a perfect storm for sellers; however, this presents more of a challenge for buyers. With a large buyer pool, and fewer homes for sale, many buyers find themselves in competition when submitting offers. Choosing an experienced agent team is key to successfully navigating today’s market.

8301 Maryland Ave., Suite 100, 725-0009, dielmannsothebys realty.com The remainder of 2015 is all about renewed confidence. Statistically, all areas of the market are showing continued increases. Sellers are going under contract within hours, buyers are moving up successfully, firsttime home buyers are diving into the market with confidence in the future, and realtors are at the top of their game. Bring on 2016!
8301 Maryland Ave., Suite 100, 591-9715, 881-3814 (office), dielmannsothebys realty.com The luxury realestate market will continue to see incredible growth in 2015. Spectacular homes have hit the market this year, selling quickly at list price, and even above. We have seen all price points experience growth, and the Tadlock-Brueggemann Team is having a record year, due to our clients’ confidence in the high-end real-estate market in St. Louis.

We expect consumer optimism and market momentum to propel sales activity for the duration of the year. Look closely, though, and you will see some sales falling through as buyers and sellers seek a middle ground. I view this as a necessary and positive transition toward a balanced market, where there is enough positive ground for everyone to win.
There has been solid activity so far this year in the upper-tier market, including several sales this month. We anticipate a strong second half—and finish—for the year. I believe the anticipation of higher interest rates approaching will stimulate the entire market—especially the luxury home market.
The Warner Hall Group Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty 8301 Maryland Ave., Suite 100, 596-8069, warnerhallgroup.com Though we see signs of increased inventory and decreased demand, the second half of 2015 will be robust. Growth in many of the area’s business sectors, new housing developments in many of the better parts of the Central Corridor, and a strength in the overall regional economy will bolster the performance or our market for the foreseeable future. Those of us who sell the very best neighborhoods of St. Louis, by and large, agree that from now into the spring of 2016 will be one of the best times to sell in the next 10 years.

The second half of 2015 looks great for home buyers, sellers and investors. Today’s clients make informed decisions. The best time to invest is now, with the guidance of your realtor partner. Equity in the market is steady, and interest rates are low. The fall market is normally slow, but recent years have flourished. I look forward to partnering with you.

The biggest change in the real estate market this year is the movement of more homes and condos in the $1 million-plus range. This segment of the market has come alive.
17050 Baxter Road, Suite 200, 313-6530, fredwolfmeyer.com The second half of 2015 will continue to outpace 2014, but not at the same rate as the first half of the year. Inventory will continue to be lower, which, in turn, will facilitate the rise of sale prices. The percentage of list price to sale price will remain high, due to the demand in the market.

2015 VW Beetle
2015 Ford Mustang
Gary Romeo, sales manager at Lou Fusz Ford proclaims, “The Mustang is celebrating 50 years of being No. 1. The Mustang convertible V-8 has lots of power, plus that free, open-air feeling.” Base price for the V-8 Mustang convertible is approximately $42,500. Another fun convertible—and a sentimental favorite—is the VW Beetle. Though there are major differences between the old and new Beetles, particularly in the placement of the engine and the drive wheels, the new Beetle captures the look and spirit of the old one as a thoroughly modern interpretation of a much-loved classic. It was said of the original that a Beetle is a member of the family who just happens to sleep in the garage. What other car has a half-dozen Disney movies inspired by it? This second generation of the new Beetle has a flatter roofline, reminiscent of the roofline of the old convertible. It also has a bit of a more aggressive stance and look to it, making it more attractive to male buyers. The interior of the Beetle is thoroughly modern, with well-bolstered, heated
front seats, and a touchscreen with surrounding buttons for audio controls, optional navigation and back-up camera. Ventilation controls are threerotary-dial simple. Rear seats can fit an adult, but it’s cozy; and the seat back is somewhat upright. The trunk is a bit small, but functional, and the rear seats do fold down for greater cargo-carrying flexibility. A set of three performance gauges in a pod atop the console and a flat-bottomed steering wheel are nice performance touches in the turbo. Unlike the old manual top, the new Beetle’s insulated top raises and lowers easily at the touch of a button, and the soft top includes a glass rear window with defogger. The old Beetle’s 56-horsepower, air-cooled 4-cylinder rear-mounted boxer engine was simple and reliable, but not known for its performance. Its zero to 60 times were best clocked on a calendar. Today’s Beetle, however, offers an array of frontmounted modern engines from the thrifty diesel to the 170-horsepower, 1.8-liter to the powerful 2.0-liter turbo. With 210 horsepower going to the front wheels, the turbo really is a fun car to drive. Fast Beetle no longer is an oxymoron. A 6-speed manual and 6-speed DSG automatic with sport mode and paddle shifters are the available transmissions. With the automatic, gas mileage is 23 city, 29 highway. According to Matt McManus, sales manager at Bommarito VW, “The new Beetle convertible re-kindles the love of the Bug. It’s fun to drive and has plenty of power; despite its classic look, it drives like a modern car.” Figure on spending about $26,000, or $30,000 for the turbo or diesel.

FAVORITE SUMMER ACTIVITY is cruising the town in a cool convertible. While the wet spring has impinged on the number of top-down days so far this year, hopefully the sun will be shining this summer for some drop-top fun. One classic convertible that has been updated and improved over the years is the Ford Mustang. Now in its 50th year, the original pony car has had a ragtop version since the beginning, and the modern iteration is a fabulous ride. The sleek new nose and slanted rear really make the newly redesigned Mustang a head-turner, as does a favorite feature: the sequential LED turn signals that flash from right to left or left to right. We recently reviewed a Mustang coupe with the new ecoboost turbo 4-cylinder, which was nice and thrifty, but the power wasn’t overwhelming. In the convertible, we drove a 5.0-liter, 435-horsepower V-8 monster—a true American muscle car. Mated to a very precise shifting 6-speed manual channeling power to the rear wheels, this car is a blast to drive. In a straight line, the throaty roar of the exhaust and awesome power propel you forward like a rocket. At legal speeds, it feels like a horse chomping at the bit, begging you to let it run at full gallop. It even handles well, navigating a twisty winding road with aplomb, but not beating you up on regular streets. Of course, with all that grunt, gas mileage is going to suffer; and at 15 city, 25 highway, it’s not going to win any Greenpeace awards, but those numbers are not bad for a 435-horsepower, almost-3,900-pound sports car. Adjustable steering feel, ranging from comfort to sport, allows you to choose according to circumstance. Powerful brakes help corral all that horsepower. Obviously, on a sunny day with the top down, the Mustang convertible is a joy. Thanks to a comfortable interior, it’s a car with which you could easily live year-round, as long as you don’t need a functional rear seat. With the insulated top up, it’s a cozy, quiet cockpit from which to operate. The trunk is fairly deep, but not very tall, offering a decent amount of storage for a convertible. The back seats are best left to the junior-high and younger crowd. Front seats are well-bolstered, comfortable, and heated and cooled. Dual automatic climate control keeps things comfortable when it’s too hot or cold to have the top down. A video screen in the center of the dash can control four functions at once, including audio display, navigation, heated/cooled seat function and a compass; it also displays the back-up camera.

Golf Grapevine BY WARREN MAYES
It’s been a busy month and there’s plenty to report, so let’s tee it up: Leath won the 2015 title by six shots in the Championship Division. Amanda Kim of O’Fallon carded a 149 for second place.
Ellen Port
Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Ellen Port retained her championship in one of the top women’s tournaments in the area. Port finished 5-over for 36-holes at Fox Run Golf Club and that was good enough for an 8-shot victory in the 23rd Metropolitan Women’s Amateur and the Jayne Watson Trophy. It was Port’s 14th championship in the event. After an opening even par round of 72, Port posted a 5-over 77 on the tough Kern design of Fox Run. Mother Nature was not pleasant over the two days in Eureka. There were two suspensions during the first round and that made for a long day to get the championship started. The second round began with more rain early, giving way to some sun, and the tourney wrapped up just as the rain began to fall again. Lindsey Eisenreich was the runner-up. Kathy Glennon had the highlight of the championship. She recorded an ace on the par-3, eighth hole in Round 1. MWGA Junior Championship Elizabeth Leath of Chesterfield is the winner of the 56th annual M i s s o u r i Women’s Golf Association J u n i o r Championship. The Parkway Central graduate, who will play at the University Elizabeth Leath o f Ce n t ra l Missouri, shot rounds of 70 and 73 at Crown Pointe Golf Club in Farmington.

Old Warson Chosen Old Warson Country Club has been selected by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as the host site for the 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. The tournament will be contested Sept. 17 to 22, the third USGA championship at Old Warson, which was designed by architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., and opened in 1954. The club hosted the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur, won by Danny Green, and the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur, won by Jennifer Song.
Academy, has competed in many MWGA events, and was a 2011 recipient of a MWGA Education Scholarship. In high school, she was a three-time district champion. She was second in the state tournament as a junior and she was named Gina Della Camera all-state as a junior and senior. The Town and Country native just graduated from Indiana State University with a degree in accounting. She also played golf for the Sycamores.
Old Warson Cup Central Missouri University graduating senior Cy Moritz, the 16-seed at the Old Warson Cup, upended five-time winner Skip Berkmeyer 2-and-1 in the final match to take home the title. The Old Warson Cup is a match play event conducted by the St. Louis Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association at Old Warson Country Club. Berkmeyer, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the semifinals with two different 3-and-2 victories — one over Buddy Allen and the other over Ted Moloney. East Side Amateur Skip Berkmeyer captured the 12th East Side Amateur at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton. Berkmeyer began play in the second and final a shot back of leader Michael Johnson. However, a 2-under round of 70 would seal the deal en route to 5-under total and victory in the tournament. “It was nice to win it,” Berkmeyer says. “The course sets up pretty good for me. It’s the first time I’ve won this tournament.”
Seth Sherman
Normandie Amateur Phil Caravia, the lone golfer in the 29th Normandie Amateur to break par in both rounds, captured his second tournament title in the event. Caravia posted rounds of 68-70 for a 4-under total on the grand old track. Patrick Riordan finished solo second at 1-over par 143. Riordan had rounds of 70-73 for the weekend. Skip Berkmeyer came in third with back-to-back rounds of 72.
Holes-in-One Creve Coeur resident Seth Sherman recorded his first hole-in-one. Sherman, 46, was playing with friend Mike Schnell when he aced Ruth Park’s No. 8, a par 3, 145-yard hole. Sherman hit a pitching wedge off the tee and the ball rolled into the hole. He has been golfing for more than 30 years. Chaminade seventh-grader Thomas Geraty recently scored a hole-in-one on the ninth hole at Pheasant Run Golf Course. Geraty made the shot on the last hole of his last match of the season playing with the seventh-grade CYC team. Other team members included Brody Ellison, Colin Fitzgerald, Brennan Fox, Daniel Martin and Jack Ponder. All will be members of the class of 2020.
MWGA Intern Gina Della Camera has accepted the USGA P.J. Boatwright Internship with the MWGA for the 2015 season. Della Camera, who graduated from St. Joseph’s

K, THIS TOOK A LOT OF GLEANING, some serious thought, and a few possibly misplaced assumptions, but I have compiled a list of 10 movies you probably have not seen that you absolutely should watch. I’ve sorted them by genre, because as good as a movie is, if it’s not your thing, it’s not your thing. So, if you are compiling a list for rainy-night summer rentals, consider the following: Side Effects (Thriller) Jude Law plays a psychiatrist, who is drawn into a murder when a woman (Rooney Mara) stabs her husband (Channing Tatum) with no apparent motive shortly after she switches anti-depressants. Drive (Thriller) Ryan Gosling plays a low-level mobster pulled into a personal drama when he tries to help a beautiful neighbor (Carey Mulligan) escape her abusive husband (Oscar Isaac). Martha Marcy May Marlene (Drama) Youngest Olsen daughter Elizabeth exploded onto the scene at Sundance with this stirring indie film about a young woman who escapes a violent cult and its volatile leader. Inception (Thriller) Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this Christopher Nolan head game about a team of thieves who invade their targets’ dreams to steal ideas. Role Models (Comedy) Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott star as best friends and energy drink salesmen forced into community service after Rudd’s midlife crisis.
Debbie Baldwin
TANGENTIAL THINKER Nightcrawler (Thriller) Jake Gyllenhaal stars as an amoral tabloid photographer who inserts himself into a criminal investigation in this dark, philosophical examination of fame and the media. Moonrise Kingdom (Comedy) A coming-of-age childhood love story as only Wes Anderson can tell it. When two 12-year-olds run away, the entire town engages in the search. Contagion (Drama) Steven Soderbergh’s haunting film tracks the spread of a virus from patient zero to global pandemic, as seen through the eyes of a CDC director, a field doctor, patients and families. Tropic Thunder (Comedy) Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. star in this caustic comedy about a group of self-involved actors shooting a Vietnam war movie on location, who runs into a real drug-trafficking operation. A Most Violent Year (Drama, Action) Set in New York in 1981, the film follows an immigrant and his family as they try to fulfill the American Dream amidst mob rule and corruption. Oscar Isaac makes his second appearance on the list, and his performance alone is worth the price of admission.

REVIEWS THEATER REVIEW BY DEBBIE BALDWIN
Love and Mercy
PEACE, LOVE & UNDERSTANDING RATING: 8 out of 10
I
T MAY SURPRISE YOU TO read that I am the exact target demographic for this biopic— not because of Brian Wilson, mind you, but because of John Cusack. If you sat in a theater in 1989 and watched John Cusack holding a boom box blasting In Your Eyes over his head in the rain, begging for Ione Skye to take him back, you know exactly what I mean. If you hung a poster of him in your bedroom, and imagined you were that bookish, socially awkward girl he couldn’t live without, you know exactly what I mean. If you ever sat in the bushes outside his Chicago home holding a half-eaten sandwich you’re fairly certain he threw away at O’Hare, while weeping uncontrollably...OK, maybe that was just me...but I digress. Our story begins in the ’60s, when The Beach Boys, guided by their front man, Brian Wilson (Paul Dano), are on the verge of becoming a sensation. Along with the accolades, Wilson experiences a heavy dose of personal drama; that, combined with a heavy dose of hallucinogens, leads to more than a decade of mental and emotional instability. In the ’80s, Wilson (now played by John Cusack) is under the care of a draconian doctor, Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti), when he meets Melissa Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) and finds his salvation. This movie is great from start to finish, whether you’re a fan of the music or not. Cusack delivers a stunning and fragile performance, and the rest of the cast is strong. My only beef would be the casting of Elizabeth Banks, who lacks depth. Other than that, it’s two hours of great music and great acting.
Inside Out
BRAIN ACTIVITY RATING: 8 out of 10
T
HERE ARE TWO KINDS of great animated movies. There’s the kind that your kids are happy to watch over and over, such as Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and The Lego Movie. And there are the kind that you, along with your kids, enjoy watching again and again, including Up, Toy Story and, yes, Inside Out. Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is an ordinary child with ordinary thoughts and emotions. Those emotions, Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling), are voiced in her head as she goes through life. When her parents uproot her from her quiet Midwestern life and move her to San Francisco, Riley must face the change with all the angst and emotion of any child taking on the challenge; and together, with the voices in her head and a long, lost imaginary friend Bing Bong (Richard Kind), we follow her internal struggle. The film is smart, engaging and funny. It has all the standard tug-at-your-heartstring components of a Pixar film, along with a delightful dose of grown-up wit and charm. More than that, it’s a story to which everyone, young or old, can relate.

Emmeline BY MARK BRETZ
THE STORY In 1841, soon-to-be-14 Emmeline is taken from the family home of her parents in Maine by her Aunt Hannah. Her mother’s stern, religious sister believes that it’s time for Emmeline to contribute to her poor family’s income and travels with her to Lowell, Massachusetts, where Emmeline is hired to work in a textile mill. At the factory, the owner’s son-in-law, Mr. Maguire, takes more than an employer’s interest in the quiet but attractive young woman. When Emmeline becomes pregnant, she is ‘ruined’ in the eyes of the factory boss and others, and cared for by Aunt Hannah until she delivers her child. The baby is taken away immediately to foster parents who promise to adopt it and raise it as their own. Twenty years pass, and Emmeline now runs her family’s boarding house in Maine. One day, a handsome young man, a railroad worker from Kansas named Matthew Gurney, arrives and quickly develops a rapport with Emmeline. He soon proposes marriage to Emmeline, who happily accepts. But is this marriage meant to last?
HIGHLIGHTS Commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera in 1996, Tobias Picker’s brooding, two-act opera is receiving its first full-scale production since its debut in a brilliant presentation impeccably directed by James Robinson at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Both musically and theatrically, Emmeline is a bravura performance. Blending in bits of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and other American composers, Picker’s lilting and affecting score is sprinkled with infectious melodies and folk tunes that evoke pictures of the harsh realities of life in America in the 19th century. Joyce El-Khoury makes an impressive OTSL main stage debut, not only with her strikingly strong soprano but equally so with her fine rendering of Emmeline’s modest but forthright personality. Watching her move her feet aimlessly while her mind wanders during a lecture by factory boss Hooker (Geoffrey Agpolo in a fine performance) is enchanting, as well as effective. Tenor John Irvin puts his dashing good looks to good use as the amiable Matthew, and brings luster to Matthew’s heartfelt arias. Another strong voice is that of Matthew Lau, whose resonant bass intones both the authority and love of Emmeline’s father for his eldest daughter. Meredith Arwady, so powerful in last season’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, is equally compelling as Emmeline’s starched Aunt Hannah. Emmeline is another example of the uncanny ability of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis to resurrect operatic gems that sparkled in their debuts, only to languish in a creative dresser drawer of forgotten artistic achievements later. OTSL’s rendition of Emmeline depicts tragedy in its purest and most heart-breaking form.

Some big news affecting the St. Louis culinary scene: Chef JOSH GALLIANO has left his post as executive chef at The Libertine to take a position with Companion Bakery. He’ll be delving into the baking business, just in time for the opening of the company’s new Maryland Heights facility, scheduled for later this summer. Galliano’s replacement at The Libertine will be MATT BESSLER, who has been running the kitchen at Schlafly Bottleworks. Word is, Bessler will be tweaking The Libertine’s menu, with an aim to make it more approachable and affordable, while still retaining the restaurant’s farm-to-table focus. A few new debuts to report: Organics, a new grocery store specializing in certified organic food, is now open at 5400 South Kingshighway Blvd. The new location of Crushed Red is now doing business in Creve Coeur at 11635 Olive Blvd. Yiro/ Gyro, which specializes in Mediterranean cuisine, has opened its doors at 750 Locust St. downtown. And coming soon, Louisianabased Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers restaurant will be launching its sixth area location in Kirkwood in September. The chain, which started in 1996, currently has more that 220 restaurants in 18 states. For the months of June, July and August, Piccione Pastry will donate 10 percent of one week’s total net sales to a different nonprofit organization. The lucky recipients are: CHADS Coalition for Mental Health (June 23-28), Variety the Children’s Charity (July 21-26), and Queen of Peace Center (Aug. 25-30). A quick note: Giovanni’s on the Hill closes for vacation beginning June 29, and will reopen July 6. Giovanni’s Kitchen in Ladue will remain open.
Lucky Buddha
Enlighten Your Palate BY SIDNEY LEWIS
THE FOOD SCENE ON SOUTH JEFFERSON Avenue has been centered around Cherokee Street for a while now. But lately, the goodness has been spreading out a bit, with the opening of eateries like Lona’s Lil’ Eats and The Purple Martin just a few blocks away. Now, there’s another fine, eclectic restaurant in the area, Lucky Buddha. Lucky Buddha offers Pan-Asian cuisine, creative takes on dishes from all over Asia, as reimagined by chef and co-owner Rene Cruz. The menu runs the gamut of all of our favorites, from yakitori to banh mi sandwiches, to pho and ramen noodle bowls. There’s also a pretty interesting drink menu, as well. We sipped on a couple of Buddha Collins ($9), a refreshing drink with one of our favorite local spirits, Pinckney Bend gin, along with lemon juice, lemongrass syrup and Creole Bitters. There’s also a nice selection of sakes from which to choose. We tried a shot of the Pride of The Village ($12), a light, floral sake with subtle hints of fruit. After much deliberation, we decided to try a selection of smaller plates, the Thai Spring Rolls ($7), a small Cold Mung Bean Noodle salad ($7 small/$11 large), and two versions of the steam buns: the Peking Duck ($10) and Sake Braised Shiitake ($7). The rolls are fairly traditional, a thin rice paper wrapping full of veggies, shrimp and pork. The salad was substantial, as well as delicious, full of veggies, mung bean noodles and
tofu; and tossed in a tasty, sweet and spicy peanut sauce. The steam buns were the standout among all of these fine dishes. Fluffy dough stuffed with savory duck and earthy mushrooms, respectively, they come two to an order with a dollop of pickled daikon radish, carrot, cilantro and jalapeno on the side. We were fortunate to stop in on one of the first days the restaurant held its Wok N’ Wednesday ($10) special. On hump day, guests can choose from different types of rice and noodles, three sauces and four types of meat (including tofu). Our creation had egg vermicelli, red curry sauce (the hottest available!) and all of the “extreme veggies” offered: baby bok choy, onion, carrot, green onion, bean sprouts, cilantro, snap peas and peppers. We added some lemongrass chicken to the mix for an additional $3. If you think there was a lot going on in this bowl, you’re right! With so many ingredients to choose from, this special offers a pretty good bang for your buck. The space at Lucky Buddha is bright and vibrant, with colorful anime characters painted on the walls, and the patio out back is a great place to nosh al fresco. Delivery and carry-out also is available for those who want to enjoy offsite.

THE WINE LIFE
What I’m Drinking Now: Spanish White Sippers
M
BY STANLEY BROWNE, CSW
ORE THAN 2 MILLION acres of vineyards? Now, that’s dedication! Spain has been making wine for a thousand years or so, with many different grapes and styles of wines. Often over-shadowed by Italy and France, Spain has made many great inroads and has slowly found its way to the heart and palate of American consumers. Wines from Spain are far from the ordinary. There are more than 60 different regional DOs (denominación de origen) producing everything from light and zesty albariño from Rias Baixas to some of the leathery red tempranillos of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and, of course, the highly acclaimed blends of Priorat. The carefree days of summer are now in full swing with pool parties, picnics and backyard BBQs, and when looking for refreshment, white wines definitely are more tempting. Spanish whites are generally crisp, easy to drink and affordable. Most Spanish whites are $15 a bottle or less. With high-quality wines that won’t break the bank, what’s not to love about Spanish wines? Let’s see how Spanish whites match up, and take a sip of a perfect summer sipper, albarino:
2013 Arindo, Verdejo—Rueda, Spain This wine has a lot of tropical fruit notes with a fragrant nose, and flowers cut through with citrus and acidity for a crisp finish. Verdejo can be made bright, crisp, fresh in style like this, or more full-bodied and oaked for a richer
style. This grape originated from North Africa, but has grown in Rueda since the 12th century. Rueda DO (Denominacion de Origen) centers around the town of Rueda, and is about 100 miles northwest of Madrid. 2013 Ladera Sagrada Castelo do Papa, Godello – Valdeorras, Spain Ladera Sagrada winery is situated in the Valdeorras DO in the Galicia region in far northwestern ‘Celtic’ Spain. This wine sees no oak, and comes from 34-year-old godello vines. Godello has gained popularity for its ability to express terroir and age like chardonnay. The soils here are slate and granite, giving the wine a clean mineral flavor, balanced with green apple, pear, herb notes with a persistent finish. 2013 Eguren Protocolo—La Mancha, Spain Protocolo winery, owned by Eguren family vineyards, is located in the northeast edge of La Mancha DO in middle of Spain. Although it has a warm continental climate, the vineyards are at 2,700 feet of elevation, providing cool nights for
the vines to recover from the heat. Tasting notes of apple, peach, cut grass, zesty acidity. Airen grapes, not familiar to most, represent 30 percent of vines planted in Spain. They are used in blends but mostly used in the production of Brandy. Macabeo, also known as viura, is one of the grapes also used in cava production. 2012 Shaya, Verdejo Old Vines – Reuda, Spain These are old vine verdejo, and are ungrafted in sandy soils covered with alluvial pebbles. The vineyard sits about 2,300 feet in altitude. Tasting notes of apricot, pear, baking spices, roundness through mid-pallete and finish. TASTING TIP: Why swirl wine? First, many people try to swirl wine mid-air, which often leads to wine spillage (mostly on one’s self!) Use a flat surface like a table, which usually avoids accidents, but also can increase speed of swirls. The act of swirling wine actually increases the number of aroma compounds that release into the air, and helps aerate the wine to open it up quicker. Happy swirling!

2013 Pazo Señorans, Albarino – Rias Baixas, Spain Color: Bright straw yellow Aroma: Citrus, grapefruit, apple, white flowers Taste: Citrus, key lime, melon, round midpalate, good acidity, lingering mineral notes This wine is all-stainless fermented and in contact with the lees for a minimum of five months. They do several bottlings during the year to maintain freshness. Albarino is produced mainly in the Rias Baixas in the northwest corner of Spain. This grape began gaining attention in 1986, when this region focused on this varietal, making a clean wine that is approachable for the European market, as well as the U.S. market. This grape (known as alvarinho in Portugal) also is grown just south of Rias Baixas in Vino Verdo. Due to its success, Californian winemakers, of course, had to dabble—and with some success—in regions like Santa Ynez Valley, Clarksburg and Carneros. Albarino’s crispness and acidity make it a good food-pairing wine. Here are some of other Spanish whites that are now available in St. Louis.
“Moss Roxx Ancient Vine Zinfandel from Lodi, California is a hearty wine with depth of flavor including notes of mocha and raspberry. Perfect paired with aged cheeses and summer barbecue. Bonterra Organic Vineyards Zinfandel from Mendocino County deliverrs a rich, long finish with fresh hints of blueberry and black stone fruit. Delicious with a decadent dessert like carrot cake!” Janet Nicolettti

And an online childbirth education program allows patients access to everything they need at home, Swinkels says. “It fits in with a mom who has a busy schedule or if she is on bedrest, or if family members are out-of-state or in the military overseas.” An experienced staff supports St. Luke’s full range of labor and birth options for normal, as well as high-risk, deliveries. Perinatologists and other specialists are trained to provide care for high-risk conditions in its Perinatal Center, which offers perinatology services and specialized ultrasound. In addition, St. Luke’s neonatal unit, the Saigh Foundation Special Care Nursery, provides specialized care to premature infants delivered as early as 30 weeks and newborns with other special medical needs. Neonatologists, pediatricians, certified neonatal nurse practitioners and specially trained nursing staff supervise the nursery around the clock in a state-of-the-art unit renovated in 2014 with private rooms and the latest technologies. As St. Luke’s strives to provide the most personalized birth experience possible, patients are responding. Its maternity services scored higher than the state and national averages on patient satisfaction surveys in 2014, placing it in the top 5 percent of hospitals across the nation. And St. Luke’s is the only Spirit of Women hospital in the area, Swinkels adds. “We have been recognized for our excellence in women’s health services and education.”

It really addresses who made them, how they were used, and the significance of the artworks to their makers and users.” While some of the artworks in the exhibition were created for use in the home—such as relief-carved doors, ceramic vessels and figurative containers for household ingredients—many are performance masks and helmets for the poro society. “Poro could differ from area to area, community to community,” Bridges says. “These were men of status—certainly it was important for a young man to belong to poro because that made him a legitimate adult who could be valued in society, and was eligible and attractive for marriage.” The society, which still is in existence in some communities, was ‘quazi-secret,’ Bridges notes, in that women were not allowed to witness the various initiation ceremonies. In addition to the masks themselves, the exhibition includes photographs by contemporary French photographer Agnes Pataux. “They will give visitors an idea of some of the variations on practices, and the art forms used in these contexts,” Bridges says. “They also help personalize them; she’s very focused on the individual practitioners with their power objects.” Senufo: Art and Identity in West Africa was organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art, and includes works borrowed from approximately 60 public and private collections. The St. Louis exhibition will feature additional works from four local private collectors, and will remain on display until Sept. 27.
