CONTENTS SOCIETY THERE’S NO QUESTION THAT THOSE OF US WHO HAVE PETS SEE THEM as cherished members of the family. It doesn’t mean that we value them above all else; rather, we consider them a significant part of our lives, and their mere presence adds a certain kind of joy that only pet owners and animal lovers can understand. This week’s expanded Pet Tales section introduces you to St. Louisans who would definitely agree. Case in point: We bring you the story of Dexter, a oncetimid bichon frise, who has found contentment in the home of Michael and Richelle Weisbrod. I’ve known the Weisbrods for some time, and see them every so often at fundraisers and events around town. In the past, we’ve chatted about family, mutual friends and trips overseas, but we’ve never really discussed our pets until recently. And when we did, the mood of the conversation shifted, and there was no denying the joyfulness in their tone and a sparkle in their eye. Dexter is one lucky dog. But I’m sure the Weisbrods would see it the other way around.

W hat’s your dream travel destination? Frank Cusumano If it’s not Italy, which it is, I like those resorts in Mexico—those all-inclusive ones where the toughest decision you have to make every day is, do you go to the outdoor buffet or the indoor one? Weather is mostly perfect—it’s pretty perfect.
John Johnson I would travel the islands of the South Pacific from New Zealand to Tonga, Fiji, Cook and Phi Phi Islands. I am a huge history buff and would love to be able to travel the places that Captain Cook and Magellan sailed, and soak up the culture and the food.

BY BRYAN SCHRAIER
NTERMITTENT RAIN COULDN’T PUT A damper on the spirit of guests at Circus Flora’s annual Flora Dora Gala. The event’s 1920s speakeasy theme was inspired by this year’s big-top production, One Summer on 2nd Street. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, while browsing silent auction items, before entering the speakeasy for dinner. Proceeds from the event benefit Circus Flora’s outreach programs, including a clown program in area hospitals, a ticket-donation program, and tumbling, teamwork, and circus-skills training for youth with learning and socialization challenges. Darryl and Lauren Sagel served as the evening’s co-chairs.

OME 10 PERCENT OF FAMILIES IN ST. Louis County, along with 27 percent in St. Louis City, are living in poverty, according to the latest estimates by the United States Census Bureau. That translates to thousands of kids in need of the basics for food, health care and education. Fortunately, hundreds of St. Louis charities have stepped up to help them. And helping those charities in their worthwhile missions is Old Newsboys, a nonprofit group that has distributed approximately $19 million since it was founded in 1957. The organization, supported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, is best-known for its signature event, Old Newsboys Day. The tradition takes place each November on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, when volunteers take to the streets with a special edition to raise awareness and funds for children-based nonprofits. “We have 5,000 volunteers,” says executive director Mary Ann Wagner. “Some of them have been doing it since the late- ’50s. They’re really the backbone of the organization, and the whole
community helps out.” About $200,000 is raised on Old Newsboys Day each year, so to help the nonprofit reach its fundraising goal—which is set this year at $750,000— leaders in the local business community step up to contribute, as well, Wagner says. “Our mission is to ensure that children who are at risk in our community because of abuse or poverty receive adequate food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and are provided equal opportunity for social development,” Wagner says. Last year’s proceeds were given to more than 200 nonprofits in the form of grants during an April event at the Edward Jones Headquarters, with a focus on small, in-the-trenches nonprofits for whom even a small grant can make a huge impact. Among the awardees, who were given grants of between $3,000 and $5,000, are: Grace Hill, which used its funds for supplies like car seats, baby bottles, diapers and thermometers; Manasseh Ministry, which purchased school uniforms; and Marygrove, which supplied winter coats and outerwear to kids in need. “These are

MUSÉE DES ARTS DÉCORATIFS
The Jardin des Tuileries along Rue de Rivoli, with The Louvre in the background
The Louvre’s Hidden Gem
W
HAT’S THAT OLD LINE about the Smithsonian b e i n g ‘A m e r i c a ’s attic?’ France’s attic is being run by The Louvre, with remnants from the Middle Ages onward. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is not comprehensive — not a single throne, for instance, survived the French Revolution — but it surely is fascinating. Housed in the western wing of The Louvre and run as a separate entity, it focuses on objects that are 28

functional as well as beautiful. The collection is eclectic: furniture, jewelry, clothing—even toys and religious items—that reflect the history of France and its aesthetic. Despite a location in the heart of tourists’ Paris, it’s surprisingly undiscovered. On our most recent visit, there were no Americans and only one pair of Brits. But the people-watching is superb. Exquisitely groomed German college students focused on a Dries Van Noten clothing exhibit. Some visitors resembled staff at art galleries or couture houses, fashionably Bohemian, carefully and artfully put together. Unless there’s a special
exhibition, there’s none of the mob scene found at The Louvre or the d’Orsay. The many model rooms are splendid, with fine attention to detail. Many of them, like the salon and boudoir of designer Jeanne Lanvin, leave a visitor thinking, I could live there. Some are quite contemporary, including one with a giant marble bathtub looking like a sculpture. Stained glass, vermeil coffee sets, ivory carvings and hair ornaments pop up here and there, as well as some amazing clocks. The jewelry gallery is hypnotizing, visitors glued to a single spot for minutes at a time, closely inspecting the small and exquisite.
IF YOU GO: • Arts Décoratifs is included in the Museum Pass, which allows you to skip lines—although as quiet as this museum usually is, that’s no advantage here. If you fly through museums, you can save some money with it. en.parismuseumpass.com. Without the pass, regular admission is 11 euros, which includes the audio guide. • In reasonable walking distance are a couple of spots we like to send folks to: Within sight of the Madeleine church is the remarkable Maille boutique. Yes, mustard. Giant brass taps dispense fresh mustard, or small gift packs of mustard variations unknown to supermarket shoppers, flavors like apricot-curry or pesto. Good stuff for foodies and photographers, great for gifts at many price levels. 6 place du Madeleine; open daily. • For lunch or dinner, it’s the great old bistro, Chez Georges, with classic French favorites. It’s near the Bourse, the French stock exchange, thus busy, so reservations are very helpful. Your French not up to it? Have your hotel do it. 1 rue du Mail; 33 1 4260 0711. • Probably the best meal we had in Paris this last trip was at Lazare. Tucked away in front of the Saint-Lazare rail station, it’s a good combination of traditional and modern cuisine in a striking interior. Three meals a day, reservations suggested, which can be done by email. Parvis Gare de Saint-Lazare, rue Interieure, Paris 8; lazare-paris.fr
Vermeil Art Nouveau coffee service An example of a model room
There’s an entire two-story room of nothing but chairs, including one that has St. Louis ties. It is, of course, an Eames chair, the best-known work of the famous designer Charles Eames. Eames was raised and educated here. His aunt, Adele Chomeau Starbird, taught French at Mary Institute before becoming the dean of women at Washington University and a syndicated newspaper columnist. The strength of the museum may be its collections of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. A bedroom by Hector Guimard, the man who designed those
famous, sinuous entrances to the Metro, is an absolute showpiece. Watch for the stained-glass screen depicting a factory as industrial art in one of the Deco galleries. The layout of the museum is not quite as uncomplicated as the map would indicate, so be prepared to do a certain amount of exploring. The remodelling of a few years back has left a lovely atrium and, even better, reopened some of the original windows, giving onto wonderful views across the Tuileries gardens, the Musee d’Orsay and the Invalides’ golden dome. The museum shop,
on the rue de Rivoli side, by the entrance, is excellent—among the best of its kind in town—and can be entered without paying the entrance fee. Saut de Loup, the museum’s restaurant, also has access from both within and without the building. The outside entrance is on the Tuileries side where there’s an umbrella-covered terrace as well. Nice views, serious food—none of this premade chicken salad sandwich business—and excellent people watching, including locals exercising plenty of those pampered Paris pooches. Les Arts Décoratifs, as it refers to itself, is a treasure, and a real insiders’ secret. {LadueNews.com} July 10, 2015

Adirondack chairs at The Chanler
High Society in Newport

STORY AND PHOTOS BY JUDY CROWELL
The Chanler at Cliff Walk 30
July 10, 2015 {LadueNews.com}
FAV O R I T E M O V I E , H I G H SOCIETY starring Grace Kelly, was filmed in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1956. It tells the sad story of Gilded Age mansions going down with the wrecking ball, a way of life gone forever. Fortunately, The Preservation Society of Newport County stepped in to rescue, preserve and maintain several of these treasures. At the top of the list is The Breakers, the 70-room summer estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Marble House, another Vanderbilt home, is also a mustsee. Here, the indomitable Alva Vanderbilt and her daughter, Consuelo, can be heard on the audio tour. The monumental artworks and advanced technology of The Elms should be experienced, along with its fascinating Servant Life Tour (a true Downton Abbey precursor). Rosecliff, modeled after a French palace, is the mansion featured in High Society. All these salvaged beauties are lined up like a string of pearls on Bellevue Avenue, but be sure to go by car. You’ll wear your feet out just touring The Breakers! You’ll also want your car for the glorious 10-mile drive on Ocean Drive, ending at lovely Castle Hill

with its working lighthouse and charming restaurant and inn. Sink into one of the Adirondack chairs for a spectacular sunset view with drinks from the bar an d small plates delivered to your chair. During the filming of High Society, Grace Kelly would sneak away to this secluded beach, climbing down the precarious, rocky incline for time out and privacy. Climbing back up was so difficult that the staff built a staircase for her. Locals now call it the Grace Kelly Beach. For walking vistas of the ocean, take the beautiful 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, beginning at The Chanler, bordering mansion backyards and ending at The Breakers. It, too, has some difficult, rocky inclines. The International Tennis Hall Of Fame is well
worth seeing. Shopping along Bellevue Avenue and Thames Street (Newport’s Main Street) delights at every corner—no malls along here. Restaurants include: Bouchard, for five-star perfection wharfside; The Spiced Pear, good food in updated Victorian ambiance; Annie’s for breakfast, lunch and ginger chicken-noodle soup; White Horse Tavern, since 1673, a bucket-list bar; Muse by Jonathan Cartwright, for serious fine dining; and The Moorings Seafood Kitchen & Bar, an absolute must for waterfront food and spirits. If you love inns, Newport has many choices. The Francis Malbone House is probably the most luxurious of the B&Bs; Cliffside Inn is in the heart of the historic district; Bouchard Inn is steps from the harbor, and Hydrangea House Inn is a charmer.
But if we’re lucky enough to return to Newport, there’s only one choice: The Chanler at Cliff Walk. One of the most historic mansions in Newport, it was built in 1870 by New York Congressman John Winthrop Clark. Now a luxurious European-style boutique hotel, its guest suites all are individually decorated and are Gilded Age luxurious. If you’ve never seen High Society, you’re missing something very special. In one of the most memorable scenes ever filmed, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, after imbibing a few in a hidden wall bar at a formal party, come bursting through French doors into the blue-blooded crowd hoofing it and singing at the top of their talented lungs: Well, did you evah? What a swell party this is! And that pretty much sums up Newport. {LadueNews.com} July 10, 2015

Makeup Malaise?
OU MAY BE VERY CAREFUL about your skin-care products, considering ingredients and their potential effects before slathering something on your face or body. Since many women wear makeup every day, these cosmetic products deserve equal scrutiny. The ingredient list on a typical cosmetic product reads like a chemistry primer, often including compounds that are questionable in terms of potential effects on skin, overall health and the environment. Some local experts put parabens at the top of their list of ingredients to avoid. “One of the things that people talk about is parabens, which I think are a bad idea for a lot of reasons,” says Dr. Joseph Muccini, a dermatologist with MidAmerica Skin Health and Vitality Center located at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Among other things, they can mimic hormones. They can actually cause some issues.” He adds that, as with anything, moderation is key. “One can argue that a small amount of almost anything isn’t going to be a problem; but let’s face it, women use cosmetics every

day. So chronically over a lifetime, we do care about those things.” Jaclyn Fondren, a licensed medical esthetician at Avani Day Spa, Fondren agrees, adding that aside from larger concerns, parabens can lead to allergic reactions and skin irritation. “DEA (diethanolamine) is something that makes cosmetics creamier or sudsier or foamier, and it’s potentially irritating, so I would try to avoid it for that reason,” Muccini says. “Also, in large concentrations, it might be considered carcinogenic,” he adds. MEA and TEA are similar compounds with the same potential effects. Phthalates also pose concerns. A common ingredient in this category may be listed as DBP (dibutyl phthalate). When absorbed through the skin, these chemicals can increase chances of genetic mutations, Muccini says. According to the National Library of Medicine, current levels of seven phthalates studied by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences posed ‘minimal’ concern for causing reproductive effects. However, the National Toxicology Program concluded that high levels of one phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, may adversely affect human reproduction or development. Muccini emphatically warns against products
that contain formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. “There’s a long list of these,” he notes. The ones that release the most formaldehyde include quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin and imidazolidinyl urea. Besides releasing formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, “they can cause rip-roaring dermatitis,” Muccini says. So what can we use to get pretty without exposing ourselves to potentially harmful chemicals? “Mineral makeup is still very popular—and for good reason,” Fondren says. “Not only is it noncomedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores; but it’s hypoallergenic and suitable for any skin type. It’s very natural-looking and feels like a second skin. On hot, humid summer days, it wears better than traditional liquid makeup.” Muccini agrees that mineral makeup is a good choice, and notes that many dermatology offices and day spas offer highquality mineral products. No matter what makeup you choose, remember that it’s only as good as the quality of the skin beneath it. “Good makeup starts with good skin care,” Fondren says. “Taking care of your skin and using mineral makeup will enhance the health of your skin, as well as your overall beauty.”
HEALTH & WELLNESS CONTACT LENS CARE
Rub, Rinse, Repeat BY CONNIE MITCHELL
C
ONTACT LENSES CAN BE A COMFORTable, effective, safe way to free yourself from eyeglasses, but they also can cause a variety of problems, from irritation to serious eye conditions, if they’re not handled properly. Cleaning and storing your contacts the right way helps prevent eye infections and irritations that can be caused by contaminated lenses. “Cleaning is much more effective if you rub the contacts with solution in the palm of your hand versus just spraying them,” says Dr. Janae Kadlec, an optometrist with Eye Care Associates. “The mechanical action removes debris and bacteria, which is best performed before soaking them overnight. The multipurpose solution then further disinfects the lenses while they soak in the case.” Kadlec notes that some products, promoted as ‘no rub,’ are aimed to appeal to conveniencedriven consumers. “Additional chemicals were added to the solutions to obtain the approval for this labeling; however, sometimes patients can be allergic or sensitive to the extra chemicals.” Dr. James Rieger, director of optometric
relations with Pepose Vision Institute, adds that contact lens wearers should read the instructions that come with various cleaning and soaking solutions, remembering to always wash their hands before touching their contacts. “There are some really great products available now, and companies work hard to constantly improve their products,” he says. “Generally, if you stay with a top namebrand care solution and follow their instructions, you will do fine.” However, not all solutions are multipurpose. “Just to be clear: Saline solution is only for rinsing off a contact lens and has no cleaning or disinfection properties,” Rieger says. “Hydrogen peroxide solutions, in general, have greater disinfection and have less irritation to a patient’s eye. They do require a neutralization time, typically six or more hours, and cannot be put straight into the eye, or it will burn, since it is 3-percent hydrogen peroxide.” Kadlec recommends a hydrogen peroxide solution to many patients. “Once the neutralization process is complete, the solution remaining in the container is essentially gentle saline,” she says.
“It works really well for those who are sensitive to cleaners, preservatives and other chemicals in the regular multipurpose solutions. I also find it beneficial for patients who suffer from dry eyes and environmental allergies.” Revitalens is one of the few solutions that disinfects like a hydrogen peroxide but can be put directly on the lens and in the eye without irritation or a waiting time, Kadlec adds. He notes that Peroxicare shaves some time off disinfection, requiring only four hours. Both Rieger and Kadlec note that many patients are switching to daily disposable lenses, removing the need for any type of disinfection or storage. “With those lenses, you skip all the solutions and just wear the lens during the day and toss it at the end of the day,” Rieger says.

HUMANE SOCIETY’S KATHY WARNICK

“TO CONTINUALLY PROVIDE SECOND CHANCES FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ANIMALS IN NEED...IS AN ONGOING SOURCE OF GRATIFICATION AND JOY.” animals in distress being rescued from horrific conditions.” The Humane Society also has completed a
renovation and expansion of its Longmeadow Rescue Ranch to offer top-notch horse and farm animal rescue and rehab. And in an effort to continue helping an even greater number of animals, the organization is set to begin construction on its fifth facility. Since Warnick was a child, every animal rescue has mattered. Today, that same idea—‘no animal left behind’—is the motto of the organization she spearheads. “To continually provide second chances for tens of thousands of animals in need to have happy and healthy lives is an ongoing source of gratification and joy,” she says.

ATHY WARNICK REMEMBERS RIDING HER horse as a young girl and happening upon an unimaginable scene: A group of kids were trying to drown a kitten in a bucket of water. “My horse and I scared the young boys away, and I immediately took the kitten to a local veterinarian for treatment,” she recalls. It was one of several instances of animal cruelty and neglect that led Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri, to become a champion for animals. “I was outraged at the injustice of hurting a defenseless and voiceless creature. So I began rescuing animals that had been victims of abuse, and seeing that they were provided with proper veterinary care.” Today, Warnick loves spending time with her own rescued animals. One of her dogs, a rat-terrier mix named Christy, was saved by the Humane Society of Missouri’s Disaster Response Team in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. “In spite of having lived through a hurricane and having numerous medical issues, she is one of the sweetest, friendliest and most affectionate dogs I have ever had,” Warnick says. “She brings sunshine into each day, and I strongly sense she is immensely grateful for being rescued. Her presence constantly reminds me how resilient and forgiving animals are—even those who have suffered horrific situations or abuse. She sets a great example for humans and animals alike.” Warnick’s family of animals also extends to those at the Humane Society of Missouri. “I feel truly blessed that my passion in life of helping animals in need is also my profession.” As one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, the Society’s scale and scope attracted Warnick more than 25 years ago. “The organization provides second chances for literally tens of thousands of animals in distress. Its multi-faceted nature offers aid for animals in almost every imaginable situation.” As the Humane Society’s former director of development and communications, as well as board member and volunteer, the current president is proud of what the organization has accomplished for animals through the years. “It has been leading the charge in battling pet overpopulation, and recently reached a huge milestone: 350,000 spay/neuter surgeries,” Warnick notes, adding that spaying and neutering is the most effective way to combat pet overpopulation. Another achievement for the Society was the passage of the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act, which has significantly decreased the number of substandard puppy mills in Missouri, Warnick says. “Over 800 substandard breeders have been shut down, resulting in thousands of breeding
APA’S JENNIFER BLOME
From TV to Tails BY LISA WATSON

T
HOUGH JENNIFER BLOME JUST JOINED the APA Adoption Center last year as director of humane education last year, she is no newcomer to animal advocacy. She’s known to most St. Louisans for her 34-year career at KSDK NewsChannel 5, where she launched the Sammy’s Stars segment to bring awareness to the many adoptable pets available at area rescues. “Pets bring out the best in people,” she says. “We were able to adopt every animal that was on—and then others, as well—because people would call wanting to adopt.” Sammy’s Stars was how Blome became acquainted with many of the area’s animal rescue agencies, but a story she did about Senior Connections, a program through Lutheran Senior services, opened her eyes to the ways pets can help people, she recalls. That was when she found out that 60 percent of older adults in long-term care never get a single visitor. After doing the story, she became a volunteer, and was paired with a senior who she visited regularly for four years. “Because she was a dog-person, I usually brought my dog,” she says. Today, her work includes a similar program through the APA Adoption Center, called Pet Reach, where volunteers bring their pets to assisted-living centers. “I see what a difference it makes for an older person to be visited by a volunteer and their pet,” she says. Blome recalls fondly all the pets she’s owned, including Irish wolfhounds Murphy, Max and Sammy (the mascot for Sammy’s Stars), as well as shepherd mix Joey and lab/chow mix Jake. Currently, she lives with her significant other, Dave Keiser, and two dogs—Clyde, an 8-year-old pointer mix, and Roy, and 11-year-old black and tan coonhound mix (both adopted, of course). “Clyde and Roy are like bookends,” she says. Clyde used to visit the KSDK newsroom regularly, where he would sit by the front desk and enjoy attention from everyone who walked by. “He loves being around people and kids,” she says. These days, he regularly accompanies Blome to the Animal Safety children’s classes she teaches and helps with demonstrations. Roy, the less outgoing of the two, enjoys neighborhood dog walks and play dates with friends. While there have historically been a number of misconceptions about ‘shelter dogs,’ Blome says most of her adopted pets have been mixed breeds, which often means they have fewer health problems. She adds that 75 percent of the pets at the APA Adoption Center are turned in by families, often citing behavior problems. “The reason there are behavior problems is that they haven’t trained it,” she says. “We train them while they’re here; and when we place them, we hope it will be their last placement.” With a capacity of 300 pets, the newly
renovated APA Adoption Center has a 94-percent placement rate, and Blome says the facility is regularly able to take in animals from rescues in outlying areas when space is available. Blome now is happy spending many of her days leading programs for kids, including the Tuesday Tails storytelling, music and animal-petting event;
Animal Safety Class; Litter Patrol classes, which teach kids about spay and neutering; and others. “One of the things on my bucket list was to be a kindergarten teacher,” she says. “I love teaching preschool and elementary school children about kindness, compassion, empathy and responsible pet ownership.” {LadueNews.com} July 10, 2015

NCE UPON A TIME...RICHELLE WEISBROD WAS searching the Internet for a dog, when up popped a photo of Dexter. A bichon frise who had been returned by its first family to a breeder, and then given to 4 Paws 4 Rescue, Dexter “looked absolutely terrified,” Richelle says. “He was so helpless and scared. I thought, I have to have that dog!” Richelle called the rescue and set up a time to meet Dexter at an adoption day, and her original impression was immediately confirmed: As she and her husband Michael arrived at the event, the pets were being unloaded. “This cage of white dogs is getting unloaded and they’re all in one corner; and in the other corner is this trembling, car-sick dog, looking like he was thinking, Noooobody’s ever going to love me.” The volunteers took Dexter away to wash him off, and brought him back, still dripping. “He just looked like a little white mess of defeat—the sorrow and embarrassment was coming off this dog in waves,” she recalls. Once things calmed down, it turned out that Dexter was a great fit for their family, and he got along great with Charlie, the Weisbrods’ daughter’s dog. Richelle remembers being impressed by how much care the 4 Paws 4 Rescue volunteers took for the pets. “They were not interested in just placing dogs; they were interested in making the perfect match of the dog with a safe and appropriate home,” she says. “I really felt like I was taking a treasure, and that felt really good.” While the Weisbrods’ don’t know much about Dexter’s life before he was rescued, he came to them as a timid little dog who didn’t know how to get anyone’s attention, Michael says. “He was probably caged the whole time because he didn’t seem to really get it, and didn’t know how to go potty unless he was on a leash. We’ve never been able to totally change that; so every morning, I take him

on a walk around the neighborhood.” Other things have changed for Dexter, though; and today, Michael describes him as an outgoing dog who loves people and other dogs—especially big ones. “He envisions himself as a big dog,” Michael says, adding, “Our house just went on the market; and at the open house, our agent said that as each person came in, Dexter basically became the guide, and guided people through the house.” When the house is quiet, on the other hand, Dexter is always perched in one of his favorite spots, where he can see out the front windows to the street. “He likes to see what’s going on,” Richelle says. And when the family is at their Central West End home, Dexter likes to make sure the whole ‘pack’ is together. “In the evening, if we’re in the kitchen and one of us is ready to go upstairs, and the other is still downstairs, he will wait at the bottom of the stairs until the second one goes up,” Michael says. “He really wants the family to be a unit.” The Weisbrods say wholeheartedly that they would adopt a rescue again if the time was right, and encourage adopting families to be patient as their pet transitions to their new home. “They might come with some issues, but it’s predicated on what they’ve lived through,” Michael says. “And don’t worry about the breed. Our daughter’s dog is part pit bull, and people have misconceptions about the breed; but this is the kindest, gentlest 80-pound dog you’ve ever seen.”

GLADYS MANION REAL ESTATE
Experience & Expertise Matter A
BY BRITTANY NAY
PORTRAIT OF THE LATE GLADYS Manion presides over the conference room at the real estate agency that bears her name. “Gladys oversees everything that goes on here. She would want it to stay the way she made it,” says Stafford Manion, her grandson who serves as president of Gladys Manion Real Estate, a thirdgeneration family-owned and operated company. Gladys would be happy to know the boutique agency she started 80 years ago is carrying on the tradition of helping St. Louis clients buy and sell exclusive, high-end properties from its original home base in Clayton. Today, the company is bigger and more productive than ever, Manion says, but the mission has never changed: The client always comes first. “We want to service and educate them. We listen to what they want, give them the pros and cons, and the decisions are up to them.” Through the years, the agency has achieved some major milestones, growing from a lone realtor to 35 agents, holding the area’s highest average sale price for more than 35 years and recently reaching record sales of $100- to $120-million
annually. “When it comes to knowledge and pricing of upper-end properties in the Central Corridor, we are the best,” Manion notes. “We review the data, and we have been in the properties that the data is generated from. So, we’re not just looking at room sizes and square footage—we also have seen the quality and design features of the property, because that is paramount in deciding on how to price the house.” Gladys Manion Real Estate also is keeping up with the times. Its new website offers clients exclusive interactive technology, and in-depth information about the city and its school districts, as well as practical tips through Stafford Manion’s how-to book, a Consumers Guide to Buying/Selling in St. Louis. “The new website is super interactive and super transparent for clients, so they can get all the info they need without ‘big brother’ looking over their shoulder,” he says. “We want all of our clients to have access to everything that’s out there at no cost and no obligation—and most important, with absolute confidentiality.” High-net worth Continued on page 68

When the Price is Right...
S
BY ROBYN DEXTER
ELLING YOUR HOUSE IS A BIG LIFE decision, and can be tricky because many aspects factor in, including the local housing market and supply and demand. Local realtors advise setting the price right when you list your home, as it can determine the house’s success on the market. Susan Hurley of Janet McAfee Real Estate says that many sellers make the mistake of looking at homes that are active, or currently on the market, rather than past sales. “When value is established, it speaks to the market,” Hurley says. “Sellers need to take into account things that need to be done to the house, like upgrades and maintenance.” For some improvements, sellers will just add on the exact price to the list price, but the return a seller will get depends on what the improvements are. “Maintenance is expected; improvements are an option, but everyone expects to be warm, safe and dry,” she says. How well a house “shows” also is a big factor, according to Allie Rossini of Laura McCarthy Real Estate. “Sellers need to look at curb appeal, furniture condition, exterior and interior paint, how the
yard looks, etc.” she says. “You want to make that good first impression when people pull up.” One myth Rossini sees is sellers thinking they’re going to make money on their home if they bought it for a certain price. “Buyers direct the market,” she says. “People think that just because their neighbor’s house went for $60,000 over asking price, theirs will, too, even though it’s smaller.” Janice Freeman of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices notes that sellers need to look at the condition of the market, the competition and the comparables. “Competition is a broader market area, but people aren’t looking just in one neighborhood,” she says, explaining that most buyers are looking in at least a 5- or 10-mile radius. Freeman also notes that just because a system like a furnace is new, that doesn’t mean the seller is going to get more money for the home overall. “When it’s things that are used in the function of the house, the basics… that doesn’t always mean more profit for the seller,” she explains. In addition, Freeman says pools don’t always add value to a home, especially not in the cooler months of the year. However, she notes that when houses get into the upper price ranges, oftentimes
amenities like a swimming pool are expected. “The biggest myth I see is people think that no matter what they paid for a house, it should sell for that price, plus improvements,” she says. According to Freeman, the market is good right now, and “sellers will price their house at anything.” However, buyers may be and are willing to pay, but not overpay. “Pricing is critical in today’s market; but once you’re active, you don’t want to have to drop your price.”

Fall on the Horizon BY BRITTANY NAY
W
ITH HOMES SELLING PRIOR TO OPENings and multiple offers exceeding asking prices, the St. Louis real estate market is flying high this summer. See why local agents predict that momentum will carry into autumn.
Millennial buyers seek properties that are movein ready. To attract the best price in the shortest amount of time, I strongly recommend sellers properly prepare their homes for sale.
Christine Cool Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate It’s a very exciting time to be in the real-estate market. We have been incredibly busy. We are seeing prices come up as inventory is down, which is great for sellers. Hopefully, inventory goes up in the fall. It’s a great market for both buyers looking to expand their home for a growing family, or downsize their home as empty-nesters. We’re really looking forward to a strong fall.
Janet McAfee Real Estate I feel we have a good tail-wind going into the fall. Home prices are consistently tracking about 4 to 5 percent higher than last year, which is a good sign. Unit sales are up at a healthy rate throughout the region. Some segments are incredibly “heated,” leading to multiple offers and homes selling higher than list prices. As the Federal Reserve contemplates a rate increase in the fall, we could see prices level off. Overall, real-estate activity is very good, and we anticipate sustained momentum.
Mona Green
Maya Kefalov
Laura McCarthy Real Estate St. Louis real-estate sales are robust! Momentum should continue into the fall as first-time homebuyers enter the market. Low interest rates, higher wages and increased residential construction activity will fuel home sales.
Coldwell Banker Gundaker This spring and summer boasted a frenzy of showings, sold before first open, sold with multiple offers above asking price. The numbers predict continuation of this trend in the fall. Ladue’s inventory is down to 4 months’ supply,
Janet Horlacher with Clayton and the Central West End at 2- to 5-months’ supply. Even when the buyer pool decreases by an average of 70 percent, the low inventory may push the trend further. Of course, your home would have to look like a model and be priced better than the neighbor to sell well.
Wayne Norwood Gladys Manion Real Estate The positive mood of spring and early summer has translated into the very best inventory of quality properties in many years. Sellers are far more understanding of the need to properly prepare a home for market. There is a much higher sensitivity to the competitiveness of the market, the requiring mindset of buyers, and anticipation of inspections that lie ahead. In keeping with the current trend, we have set sights on a banner season this fall.

ou already recognize the Gateway to the West Y as a one-of-a-kind place to live. Now, we dissect the city marked by the Arch to reveal your go-to guide for moving on up in St. Louis. New to the Market Ready to make your first move in the big city? You might be a grad student or in med school, or simply have a young family, and looking to expand your entertainment options. Either way, the University City and Central West End neighborhoods are extra-appealing with affordable housing options and trendy hot spots, like the Delmar Loop. “Young kids look for condos or lofts in Midtown, and places like the CWE or U City are very affordable and popular,” says Steve Mathes, a realtor for Coldwell Banker Gundaker. Vicki Holton of Keller Williams Realty agrees. “They’re looking for entertainment—restaurants and shopping areas,” she says. When it comes to young families, though, the search expands to include areas as far as St. Charles County. “They want something that’s basically affordable, like what you’ll find in Maplewood, Rock Hill, Des Peres or Ballwin.” Holton notes that a lot of properties are being sold ‘as is.’ “With a definite lack of inventory, young buyers now feel they can buy ‘as is,’ and save by fixing up a property in a good neighborhood.” If you have family and economy on the mind, you need a neighborhood that offers more bang for your buck. “South City has cute, charming houses for that,” says Anne Dunajcik of RedKey Realty. “Affton also is appealing because it’s outside of the city, but still close to it.” Premium Cut The popular areas of St. Louis remain a constant, still reigning supreme as top neighborhood picks. “After 30 years in the real-estate business, there are no new surprises. Clayton and Ladue are still at the top of anyone’s list because of location and school district,” says Mathes.

He notes that easy access to the airport makes both places an ideal location for business travelers, as well as being within close proximity to established hospitals. “New construction is extra-appealing, and Ladue is less expensive to build from the ground up.” “Ladue and Clayton are hot. In certain areas of Clayton, like Hillcrest, once something opens up—boom!, it’s gone,” concurs Holton. Dunajcik notes how quickly homes go off the market in these coveted St. Louis neighborhoods, all within a month’s time; and on average, within five days in Ladue. “It’s a very robust and healthy market, but you still have to price right,” says Dunajcik. She also names Town & Country as a new favorite for St. Louisans seeking a distinguished area to relocate. Aged Well When your abode becomes less of a pleasure to live in, and more of a nuisance, downsizing becomes a necessary next step. The good news: There is a vast selection of housing to choose from. “Villas have become very popular because they still offer basements for storage, and even a yard for a dog or garden. Yet someone else takes care of maintenance,” explains Dunajcik. Walkable neighborhoods that offer a sense of community are attractive areas for relocation. “People who are downsizing seem to be attracted to Clayton and the nightlife. They can find smaller condos there, with phenomenal services,” says Mathes. Areas in West County, Ladue and Warson Woods are being built up with one-levels in mind, such as ranches or villas, so that St. Louisans can stay within their chosen community. With so many top-notch choices at your hands, finding an ideal neighborhood to suit your needs should be an exciting time. Moving, on the other hand, ...

A high point of my 32-year career was the first Symphony Designer Showhouse. I was assigned the butler’s pantry, a challenging room because it was smaller and a pass-through for patrons. I selected all Brunshwig & Fils fabrics and wall coverings for the space. My painter used great detail to bring out the character of the wonderful moldings. The room was such a hit that the owner of Brunshwig & Fils took me to breakfast at The Ritz!
Out-of-town jobs are always exciting. After a client purchased a vacation home in Beaver Creek, Colorado, we designed and furnished it—from towels to taxidermy pieces. We worked in the outdoor themes of mountains, nature and skiing. The client was enthusiastic to upholster pieces in blanket-like fabrics, and display vintage ski-lodge artwork.
I enjoyed working on a master suite with a fun client and interior designer. The space included a wet bar, fireplace, and customized sound system with outdoor speakers for the terrace. The master bath had floor-to-ceiling white marble, but the most fun came from customizing the cabinetry. We chose a ‘serious gray’ for the outside color, but offered a surprise on the inside with a light green known as ‘eye-catching’—and that it did!

We don’t have the land or resources to build the entire structure, so I decided to create a replica of the clock tower and place it in our garage. I have worked on the project on and off for almost two years, and it’s finally nearing completion.

by Nancy Robinson gate: Decorative A Cause Célèbre Agate, a naturally occurring semiprecious gemstone, is the new cause célèbre in the world of interior design. The microcrystalline quartz is extremely decorative and colorful, distinguished by finely grained concentric bands that resemble the rings of a tree trunk; edges are often in the shape of fanciful scallops, which adds to its decorative possibilities. Here are a few wonderful examples of nature’s artistry that simply can’t be improved upon.

Palm Beach Chic: Design in a Tropical Paradise
56
July 10, 2015 {LadueNews.com}
Katharine and William Rayner’s Palm Beach house is filled with exotic furnishings, dazzling antique textiles, and stucco walls in vibrant colors.
High-octane vintage style: Streamlined furnishings and a Lucite coffee table enable the buoyant aqua and orange wallpaper to take center stage in interior designer Meg Braff’s office. Liza Pulitzer Calhoun’s exuberant design philosophy is based on disguising the foibles of animals and children, whose aesthetic was passed down by her mother, Lilly Pulitzer.
found in design magazines or decorators’ dictates, the Palm Beach homes featured in the book are testaments to what can be achieved when inspired by the natural beauty of a unique locale. In all, Rudick’s book takes readers on an insider’s tour of 25 houses, cottages, Moorish casbahs, artists’ compounds and Mad Men-era vintage condos. Photographs capture images
of extraordinary gardens, lakeside pavilions and simple pastel Bermudan houses sheltered by dense thickets of Norfolk pines and age-old banyans. Also featured are newly restored seaside fantasies by architects such as Mizner, Fatio and Volk, celebrated for their Cuban coquina courtyards and soaring miradors overlooking tiled pools and arching fountains. As the book so eloquently reveals, it’s the eclectic mix of old and new, of Spanish and Caribbean, of contemporary design and sun-faded WASP thrift that makes Palm Beach chic.
PHOTOS BY JESSICA KLEWICKI GLYNN
Jennifer Ash Rudick is a long-time Palm Beach resident and the author of Palm Beach Chic, the new interior design book due out this fall. Rudick’s fascination with houses began as a young child on her first trip to Palm Beach, while traveling with her parents on a house-hunting expedition. Her mother, publisher of the famed Palm Beach Daily News— aka “The Shiny Sheet”—explained that “househunting was the best way to gain insight into the social patterns of an insular town.” As Rudick recalls, each house had a back-story, revealing the tastes, penchants, exotic travels, and idiosyncrasies of the inhabitants. “Their lives were stocked w i t h a n t i q u e s, m o n o g ra m m e d linens, elaborate fish aquariums, and pillows needlepointed with cautionary slogans like Guest of guest may not bring guest,” she says. “From my adult perspective today, I realize that Palm Beach was basically what it had always been—the land of dreams come true, a world of imaginatively designed and quality-built nesting places. High tray ceilings, proper entrance halls, excellent proportions, a sense of propriety, but not a trace of competitive consumption. Palm Beachers lived graciously, but with individual interpretations of the concept.” Fast-forward to the present, a time when real estate on this tiny barrier island is more valuable than ever. Today’s residents are calling upon world-class designers to help fine-tune their visions, giving rise to a fresh tropical design vernacular. Rather than slavish copies of interiors
The Good Life, as Seen through the Lens of Slim Aarons
PHOTOS BY SLIM AARONS
Chances are, you’ve seen the work of American photographer Slim Aarons (1916-2006) somewhere along the line. Aarons became famous for his photographs of socialites, jetsetters and celebrities, capturing the moment and a certain je ne sais quoi with startling poignancy. Aarons never used a stylist or a makeup artist, and made his career out of what he described simply as “photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” Born in New Hampshire in the early years of the century, Aarons got his start in the U.S. Army, working as a photographer at West Point, and later serving as a combat photographer in World War II, for which he earned a Purple Heart. He said combat had taught him the only beach worth landing on was “decorated with beautiful, seminude girls tanning in a tranquil sun.” After the war, Aarons moved to California and began photographing celebrities; and his work began appearing in Life, Town & Country, and Holiday magazines. As a chronicler of the good life in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, the stylish and affable photographer
Sea Drive by Slim Aarons
had no peer, according to the Staley-Wise Gallery, which hosted exhibitions of his photographs. “Slim Aarons brought a photojournalist’s eye to the art of formal society portraiture, posing his subjects as still life, in their magnificent environments.” Some of our favorite Slim Aaron photographs, including those shown here, are now being reproduced on canvas and clear acrylic by Modshop, and are available for purchase online at modshop1.com

DIVERSIONS BOB GOALBY
THE GENTLEMAN OF GOLF
I
BY FRANK CUSUMANO
HAVE MET THOUSANDS OF SPORTS figures in my life, but nobody is cooler than 84-year-old Robert George Goalby, who happens to be the greatest golfer to ever come from our area. Bob is the only one in town who has a Masters trophy in his living room. He has never forgotten his roots. He grew up Belleville, played at Illinois and still resides in his hometown. He has played golf with four American presidents, played with Arnold Palmer, and was a friend of Sam Sneed’s. Even Tiger Woods came up and introduced himself to Bob in the locker room one day. It’s Bob’s personality that makes him cool. He’s 84 going on 44. We were looking at a photo together. It was a shot of Bob immediately after winning the L.A. Open, and he was being kissed by a very attractive Hollywood actress. “I was single for a long time,” he says with a smile. Bob did live the good life: He won 14 times as a professional. In addition to winning the Masters, he finished second at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. After his career was over, Bob gracefully slid on an NBC Sports blazer and became one of the best commentators in the country. His mellifluous voice and keen insight made him a natural. The only person born and raised here who could compete for the title of best golfer would be Jay Haas, Bob’s nephew. Golf just runs in their blood: Jay’s brother, Jerry, is an outstanding golf coach at Wake Forest. Jay’s son, Bill, plays on the PGA Tour and won the Tour Championship Tournament in 2011. The front side of Bob’s house is a driving range; inside, it’s loaded with photos of Bob competing against the biggest golf names in history. Bob spends a lot of time at St. Clair Country Club in Belleville. He still breaks 80 from time
to time, and he gets upset when he doesn’t. Do you know many 84-year-olds who break 80? Bob watches the tour religiously. He could still be a commentator with his insight... What has happened to Tiger? Tiger was a better striker of the ball when he was an amateur. I am in shock he keeps going to these guys who don’t have much of a record. He has lost natural ability, his freedom and his rhythm, and his timing. He is thinking all the time instead of just playing. How do you remember your U.S. Open loss by one shot?
There was no Sunday round. We had to play 36 holes on Saturday. I hit a 5 iron 8 inches from the stick. It had rained the night before. There was mud on my ball. I was excited and said I will get this out of the way. I pulled the stick and missed. How much fun was NBC? The pay was good. You didn’t have to prepare and work too hard. You think you should be playing better now at age 84? I think I should. The ball doesn’t go as far. I don’t putt as well. However, I still play three to four times a week with my friends, and I enjoy it.
FIVE THINGS I THINK: 1. Golf in primetime television is awesome. Every open should be played on the West Coast. 2. I think we all struggle to eat the tastiest food with the lowest fat content, especially if time is a factor. Lion’s Choice has a roast beef on wheat (without butter) which goes for 5.8 grams. That could be the best.

3. The most fortunate person on the planet earth is Mrs. Vladimir Tarasenko. She marries Vlad; and five days later, he signs a $60-million contract. 4. Gateway Motorsports Park has become a real success. There are only about 25 cities in this country who get to host a NASCAR event. Curtis Francois and his staff have hit it out of the ballpark. I love the go-carts, too. 5. The Cardinals success story this year is stunning. I don’t think Dewitt, Mozeliak or Matheny—in their wildest dreams—could have predicted a season like this.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl GROWING PAIN RATING: 7 out of 10
I
HAVE TO GIVE THIS movie proper credit as almost every movie about those awkward teenage years is basically the same. From Pretty in Pink to Clueless to The Duff, high-school coming-of-age movies rarely explore anything other than unlikely love stories and stereotypical social groups. While this film does—to some extent—do that, it also does something that most mainstream high-school movies don’t: It treats its characters like actual people. Greg (Thomas Mann) is a likeable loner. He has one friend, Earl (RJ Cyler), and blends in effectively with the rest of his class. He and Earl spend their free time making movie parodies and hanging out with their favorite teacher. When Greg’s young neighbor, Rachel (Olivia Cooke), is diagnosed with leukemia, Greg’s mother (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with her. Together with Earl, the trio form an unlikely friendship. First and foremost, the film is perfectly cast. Look for all of these young actors’ careers to take off. Without giving too much away, I will say that this movie is, ahem, emotional. It’s hard to look at a film with comedy powerhouses like Molly Shannon (SNL) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and the promise of a happy ending—in spite of the title—and expect such emotional weight. Expect it. That being said, the movie does a wonderful job of painting a unique portrait of teenage life. There are cliques and bullies and awkward romances, but the film never lets you forget that above all, there are people.

I
REALLY WANT TO TELL you about this movie. I really do. Unfortunately, my head exploded about 45 minutes in, so the best I can do is babble and drool. Although, surprisingly, that could still provide a pretty good recap. I will be brief. All the main players are back: John Connor (Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance—or is he? Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) is his mother, although he has not yet been conceived. Kyle (Jai Courtney) is John’s best friend/ father/ comrade-inarms; and, making your ticket price worth it, Arnold is the terminator. Well, Arnold is a terminator. In the future, there are lots of makes and models and upgrades of terminators. They are sort of the lethal version of the iPhone. The film confuses complexity and intelligence. It jumps around, muddles plot points, and bombards the audience with special effects in an unconvincing attempt to obscure the absurdity. It’s an insult to the elegant simplicity of the original film. If nothing else, the film teaches us a valuable lesson: Not even Arnold Schwarzenegger can successfully go back in time.
The Fantasticks BY MARK BRETZ
THE STORY Two neighboring gentlemen, one with a teenage daughter; the other, the father of a teenage son, conspire to bring their offspring together romantically. They pretend to feud, build a wall between their properties, and then hire a mysterious bandit named El Gallo to stage an abduction of the daughter and be thwarted in the attempt by the brave boy. The plan works well; but after a while, everyone grows complacent. In a pique, one of the fathers reveals to the children that the abduction was a hoax. The disillusioned son goes off with El Gallo’s henchmen to travel the world, encountering many rough spots along the way; while the unhappy girl stays home and develops an attraction for the roguish El Gallo, who rejects her. The boy and the girl then reunite, albeit a little sadder and a little wiser for their experiences. Highlights: Based on Edmond Rostand’s 19th century play Les Romanesques (The Romancers), The Fantasticks opened on Broadway in 1960 and ran for an unprecedented 17,162 performances before finally closing in 2002. A revival began off-Broadway in 2006 and is still going strong. Martin Fox leads this engaging production in a suave and steady performance as the complex El Gallo, who serves both as villain and narrator. Christina Ramirez showcases the presentation’s most beautiful voice as the idealistic Luisa, whether alone on the contemplative tune Much More or in duet with Adam Hunn as the boy Matt on the wistful ballad, Soon It’s Gonna Rain. Hunn does a satisfactory job in his role, although he’s often overshadowed by the more accomplished performers.
COMPANY: Insight Theatre Company VENUE: Heagney Theatre, Nerinx Hall High School, 530 East Lockwood Ave. DATES: July 10-12, 16-18 TICKETS: $25-$35; 556-1293 or insight theatre company.com RATING: A 4.5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews.com
Tom Murray and Michael Brightman smoothly handle the important supporting roles of the respective fathers. Joneal Joplin is grand and glorious in his role as Henry, the addled ‘older actor’ employed by El Gallo to act out the ill-fated abduction. Tom Wethington ably assists him as Mortimer, a Cockney bloke dressed as a Native American and one who can perform a death scene unrivaled on any stage. Integral to the production’s overall success is the inspired if unspoken performance of James Kerr as the Mute. His expressions through his whiteface makeup reveal as much about the romance and sadness on stage as any soliloquy or dialogue, and he does so with understated aplomb. Director Maggie Ryan keeps the presentation humming briskly along with only an occasional lapse in tempo, maintaining the show’s humor, as well as its pathos. After more than six decades of performances on Broadway, The Fantasticks continues to prove the dictum that ‘less is more’ in its straightforward, affecting way.

Evangeline’s Bistro & Music House
Crescent City Classics BY SIDNEY LEWIS
IT’S NO SECRET THAT SOME OF THE BEST food around comes from New Orleans, and St. Louis is lucky enough to have a variety of fine eateries that specialize in this most comforting of cuisines. One that we’ve been meaning to patronize for a while now is Evangeline’s in the Central West End. One recent rainy evening, we finally popped by for a drink and a bite, and were suitably impressed. The restaurant itself is refreshingly unpretentious, and devoid of any generic Southern-inspired decor elements. It’s low-key and comfortable, good for office happy hours, date nights or special occasions. The menu at Evangeline’s is full of just the sort of NOLA classics you’d expect, favorites like shrimp and grits, po’ boys, and red beans and rice. We started off with a trio of down-home delights: the Crispy Boudin Balls ($13), Blue Crab Cakes ($15) and Crawfish Carolyn ($13). The boudin balls are spheres of peppery pork sausage encased in a crispy crust with a bit of five-pepper jelly alongside that’s equal parts sweet and heat, and makes you crave just one more bite. The Crawfish Carolyn is on the other end of the flavor spectrum, plump crawfish swimming in a pool of rich brandy cream sauce. The crab cakes are traditional takes on this venerable app, with a smoky, spicy jalapeño aioli included to complement the flaky fish. No self-respecting Big Easy-inspired menu would be complete without some gumbo and etouffee offerings, and Evangeline’s has several
tasty examples. There are two versions of the etouffee, that glorious amalgam of rice and seafood: the Louisiana Crawfish Etouffee ($20) and the Blue Crab Étouffée ($20). We opted for the blue crab, which is chock-full of meat, seasoned with onion, garlic, and butter and white wine, garnished with a snow crab leg. The Championship Gumbo ($13 half/$20 full) is a tasty homage to this classic dish. It’s overflowing with chunks of chicken and sausage, crawfish tails, jumbo shrimp, plenty of rice and a tasty blonde roux. Dive in and you’ll swear you’re feasting down in the Crescent City. The bar at Evangeline’s has a solid selection of cocktails, as well, including New Orleans originals like the Sazerac ($8) and the Vieux Carre ($11), which we sipped on before dinner. There’s also a selection of house-infused rums that can be subbed into libations like the Hurricane, and a handful of house originals. Evangeline’s also features double happy hours Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and frequently hosts live music. Delivery in the CWE is also available via Food Pedaler. Since Evangeline’s is on the northern edge of the Euclid strip, a bit removed from the neighborhood’s hustle and bustle, it may fly under the radar of some food fans. But do yourself a favor and seek it out. You won’t be disappointed. 512 North Euclid Ave., 367-3644, evangelinesstl.com

More than 140 top restaurants are participating for the fifth year of the monthlong restaurant campaign, Tomato Explosion! As part of its Summer Hunger Initiative, Operation Food Search (OFS), in partnership with FEAST Magazine, has enlisted the help of local restaurants to donate a portion of their sales of a special tomato dish throughout the entire month of July to help the organization connect kids to nutritious meals this summer. New to initiative this year is an opportunity for diners to ‘Feed the Need – Add to the Tab.’ From July 21 through July 25, restaurant servers will present a special check stuffer, along with the dinner bill, offering customers an option to fill out a card to make a personal donation in the form of cash, check or credit card. Cover the tops of two mini-muffin pans with foil, pressing the edges of the foil around edges of pans to secure. Use a sharp knife to poke a small hole in the foil over the center of each muffin cup. Place the bottom of one ice-cream cone over each hole, then carefully press cone through foil so cone stands upright in muffin cup. Spoon cake batter into cones, filling each about 3/4 full. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in centers of cupcakes comes out clean. Cool completely. Spoon frosting into medium bowl. Add Cool Whip and whisk until blended. Spoon into

Beat in eggs, one at a time, on high speed until incorporated. Mix in vanilla extract. Mix flour, baking powder and salt together in a separate bowl. Stir flour mixture, alternating with milk and ending with flour mixture, until just incorporated. Spoon batter into each icecream cone, filling to within 1/2 inch from the top. Place in muffins cups to hold upright. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 15 to 20 minutes. Spoon frosting into medium bowl. Add Cool Whip and whisk until blended. Spoon into resealable plastic bag; cut off one bottom corner of bag. Use to pipe Cool Whip mixture onto cupcakes to resemble swirled ice cream.
