CONTENTS SOCIETY THERE’S NOTHING MORE EXCITING THAN LIVE THEATRE. AND IN THE summer months, our local theatre scene is bustling. This week, for instance, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, the much-anticipated Tony Award-winning revival of this American masterpiece, took to the Muny stage. And on opening night, you might even bill the performance as live, interactive theatre. Despite a half-hour-long delay due to a passing thunderstorm, the thousands in the audience stayed put in anticipation of the distinctive bluesy, bittersweet sway of a Gershwin overture, experiencing the heartbreak of a lost love, and the fear of an impending force of nature. During the hurricane scene in Act II, as the actor portraying Jake hints at the approaching storm, he was gazing across the St. Louis sky, which was streaked by lightning in the distance. What would have been a tense, suspenseful moment turned into one of amusement, as the audience was in on the ‘joke.’ It truly was live theatre at its finest! Well, that’s my two cents… For a more seasoned assessment from our theater authority, Mark Bretz, turn to p. 48.

The Shape of Things to Come

CONTR IBU TOR S

‌W hen did you know you wanted to go into your profession? JOHN JOHNSON WHEN I WAS YOUNG, I ALWAYS WANTED to do something creative like painting, photography, sculpting and music. It wasn’t until I was cooking my way through college that I fell in love with it. Food became my medium of choice. Where some people see a plate of food, I see colors, textures and flavors—I see life.

Slim down this summer with our amazing, Coolsculpting® technology.

DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF IT MAY SOUND CORNY, BUT I KNEW THAT I wanted to be a veterinarian by the age of 4. I was grabbing up critters and exploring the creeks and woodlands as young as I can remember. My love and interest in veterinary medicine only matured with age—much like a fine wine, I suppose!

I KNEW I WANTED TO BE A PHOTOGRApher while taking some art courses at community college. The ceramic box I was making collapsed and I couldn’t throw a pot to save my life, but the photos I took for another class were excellent. Delicious

WORD AROUND TOWN

OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS (OTSL) has wrapped up its season on a very high note: Its recent season generated a 5.8-percent increase in box-office revenue from the previous year, as well as an 8.4-percent increase in both subscription revenue and attendance. A few attendance records also were set, including for The Magic Flute, which attracted more single-ticket buyers than any OTSL production in the last 10 years. In addition, OTSL has announced the creation of THE STEWARD FAMILY FOUNDATION’s ‘Thelma Steward Endowed Artist,’ which will honor an artist of color each season. Tailor-Made for Men

hen founding the original 18|8 Fine Men’s S a l o n i n So u t h e r n California a decade ago, the owners looked to an unusual source for the business’ name. “Harry Brearley was the inventor who figured out that the addition of 18-percent chrome and 8-percent nickel to steel eliminated rust, and allowed for a better-looking and better-performing product: stainless steel,” says Joe Bryan, owner of the newly opened 18|8 Fine Men’s Salon in Creve Coeur. It was those proportions that inspired the name 18|8. “The salon strives to transform its clientele to look and perform their best. A man who looks better and feels better about himself performs better.” The salon provides an alternative to typical strip-mall barber shops and upscale women’s salons, offering a relaxing environment that caters specifically to the needs of men, Bryan says. “We say there are two things a man should never do:

Go through a woman’s purse, and visit her salon. At the end of the day, guys don’t want to be in that environment, and the women don’t want them watching them with foils in their hair.” The décor at 18|8 is masculine without copying the mood of either a sports bar or a board room, Bryan notes. “There’s not a TV tuned to ESPN; it allows them to just sit and relax and enjoy the services.” Clients are privy to a fully-stocked bar and lounge, and are offered use of a changing room should they desire a robe, Bryan says. “If you’re there during the business day, you want to make sure you’re not walking out with hair on your clothes; and if you’re having coloring services done, you don’t want hair dye on your shirt.” Services are provided in semi-private stations, each equipped with plumbing to eliminate the need to move about the salon. “If you want a pedicure, we have a portable foot spa that sits at the base of the barber’s chair,” Bryan says. “You can Continued on page 52

BODY SCULPTING

The Cellulite Conundrum

D ‌

IET AND EXERCISE ARE THE basis for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight; but for some people, all the exercise and salads in the world won’t remove that post-pregnancy tummy paunch or those stubborn saddlebags. That’s why ‘body sculpting,’ the ability redistribute, remove or add fat to specific areas, has become increasingly popular. “Liposuction is still a very common procedure in the United States,” says Dr. Brock Ridenour of Ridenour Plastic Surgery. “It was the fourth most popular invasive procedure with about 200,000 cases done in 2013, while those numbers are down 1 percent over the previous year (and down 44 percent from the year 2000), the decline may be due to the increasing popularity of other procedures such as breast augmentation, but it may also be due to more emphasis on diet, nutrition and exercise, as well as the realization that liposuction carries certain risks, including injuries to the skin, pain, numbness, fat embolism and contour irregularities.” Modern liposuction is usually power-, ultrasound- or laser-assisted, notes board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michele Koo. “Laserassisted liposuction uses a combination of laser wavelengths and traditional liposuction fat-cell removal,” she explains. “Fat-cell freezing and fat-cell destruction by injections have not had randomized trials showing significant results. The FDA recently, however, did approve two devices for noninvasive fat reduction and body contouring.” One of the FDA-approved devices is known as CoolSculpting, a form of cryolipolysis, freezing fat to destroy it, says Racquel Frisella, an aesthetic nurse at Nayak Plastic Surgery. She emphasizes that all patients should have a complete consultation to determine the best plan using CoolSculpting or other options. Zerona, which uses a laser to shrink fat cells, is the other FDA-approved body-sculpting treatment. An array of other body-sculpting procedures is available. For instance, in addition to CoolSculpting, Ridenour offers BodyFx, which vacuums skin and fat into a treatment head while warming the skin to encourage collagen production and zapping fat with radio-frequency energy. He also offers ThermiTite, in which a small probe is inserted under the skin to deliver

“...THE DECLINE (IN LIPOSUCTION) MAY BE DUE TO THE INCREASING POPULARITY OF OTHER PROCEDURES...BUT IT MAY ALSO BE DUE TO MORE EMPHASIS ON DIET, NUTRITION AND EXERCISE, AS WELL AS THE REALIZATION THAT LIPOSUCTION CARRIES CERTAIN RISKS...” DR. BROCK RIDENOUR, Ridenour Plastic Surgery

heat. “Fat is thermally destroyed and slowly resolves over the next few weeks,” he says. “The attachments between the fat and overlying skin are also tightened, which may improve some patients with cellulite.” Despite the many options available, Koo still prefers the tried-and-true. “My personal preference for body sculpting is combination ultrasound with superficial liposuction for true fat removal and significant body contouring. If you only have very little subcutaneous fat, you are a

candidate for one of the other noninvasive techniques,” she says. Koo advises anyone interested in body sculpting to review before-and-after photos of patients with similar body shapes, and to speak with former patients to determine if that approach is the correct one for them. “Not all body contouring devices are the same,” she says. “It’s not the device that makes the difference in the results—it’s the operator that will make the difference.”

Hair Product 101

Don’t Stress Your Tresses

T‌

here is a dizzying array of hair-care products in drugstores, beauty warehouses and salons, all making significant claims about the wondrous results you can expect. And it’s difficult to parse the hype from the fact. “There is not one answer for everyone,” admits Jerry Dial of Cheveux Saint Louis. “Talking and consulting with your haircare professional is the best place to start. Then, you can decide whether to buy that product in the salon or on your own, but each person has different needs.” Those needs depend on an individual’s type of hair and whether it has been chemically treated. However, one ingredient to avoid is sulfate, which can fade color-treated hair, Dial says. “Look for products with an SPF to help protect your hair from sun damage. Also, in summer, look for products that are anti-humidity. There are even gluten-free products available for people who have severe allergies,” he notes.

Perhaps the best tactic is simply to get back to basics, says Catherine Peschell of CP3D salon. “Most women want to spray and gel and sculpt their hair, but a great cut that works with your type

of hair can be the answer. A very good shampoo and conditioner are about all you need if you work with your hair instead of fighting it,” she says. Peschell notes that her philosophy is somewhat unusual in the salon industry. “I think the beauty industry has done a lot of harm to women by making them feel ‘less than.’ We’re told we need to use this and that to be more beautiful, when really we need to embrace our inherent beauty.” Peschell adds that humidity, gravity and movements all work to make hair revert to its natural state, regardless of the products applied. Instead of fighting it, she advises clients to “treat your hair like fine silk stockings,” washing it with gentle, sulfate-free shampoos. “Your hair is usually not that dirty,” she says. “You don’t need to rub and scrub at your scalp.” While the natural approach may be appealing in theory, many women will not consider facing the world without a colored, curled and sprayed coiffure, so the hair product industry is in no danger. Dial recommends salon products that can Continued on page 52

AGE & SUN SPOTS

Stop the Damage BY CONNIE MITCHELL

‌W

E K N O W T H AT ex p os u re to U V rays damages skin, but in our foolish youth, we may have worshipped the sun. Now we’re seeing the consequences: wrinkles, loss of elasticity and those nasty brown spots that are no longer considered cute little freckles. Hyperpigmentation is the clinical term for ‘age spots’ or ‘sun spots,’ which appear as darkened patches of skin. Because the face is one of the most-exposed parts of the body, hyperpigmentation is a common dermatologic condition of the face, and it becomes more common with age. “The sun’s ultraviolet radiation penetrates into the skin and cells, and damages their DNA,” explains Dora Peters of dpEsthetics Skin and Wellness Studio. “To protect itself from this damage, our bodies tan, and the skin darkens with a pigment called melanin, which helps reduce UV penetration into the cells. Sometimes the skin will develop areas that stay darker than the surrounding areas and these areas may be referred to as sun spots, age spots, liver spots or solar lentigines. Sun spots can vary in size and usually are black, brown or gray.” Although they’re generally harmless, these deposits of melanin on the face and hands (another commonly sun-exposed area), can become unsightly, mottling the complexion. Treatment ranges from relatively gentle topical products to more invasive chemical or laser procedures. Before buying an over-the-counter product that promises to fade sun or age spots, however, consider a professional opinion, Peters says. “Although hyperpigmentation is often caused by overexposure to UV radiation, it also can be caused by an underlying medical condition, hormones or prescriptions the person may be taking,” she notes. “It’s best to see a medical professional to determine that sun spots are not skin cancer or precancerous lesions, especially if they begin to change or become bothersome.” The first step is to stop the damage, says Dr. Joseph Muccini, a dermatologist with the Mid-America Skin Health and Vitality Center. “It’s simply a waste to be treating this problem while continuing to expose the skin to more UV radiation. So I tell patients to wear a hat with a wide brim and always use sunscreen,” he says. “Once we’ve covered prevention, we can look at treatments, and they run the gamut,” Muccini continues. Prescription creams that contain the bleaching agent hydroquinone may help to some degree but can’t be used indefinitely due to potential side-effects. Muccini prefers a botanical product that can be used long-term and helps minimize pigment formation and reverse some of the damage. For more immediate or dramatic results, chemical peels, light-based therapies (like intense pulsed light), and fractional or semi-ablative laser treatments are effective. In many cases, Muccini notes that treating sun spots is part of a more comprehensive plan to address the wrinkling and premature aging that also comes with years of sun exposure. “I urge everyone to protect their skin so you don’t have to worry about these problems in the first place,” Muccini says. “Make a commitment to yourself and change your relationship with the sun.”

PET TALK

Beware the July Heat

I‌

T HAS BEEN AN UNUSUAL SPRING, INDEED. Fortunately, we have had a good deal of rain as of late. But the summer heat is upon us, as well— and pet owners must be sensitive to this issue. Heat exhaustion is a terribly dangerous and insidious condition that can impact our pets, particularly heavy-coated dog breeds. At about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a dog left in the car with closed windows could suffer heatstroke in less than 10 minutes. Another concern is pet owners who jog with their pets. I always emphasize to folks that most dog breeds are built to be sprinters, rather than distance-runners. Every year, I hear stories about dogs who were jogging (or simply walking) at a reasonable clip around places like Creve Coeur Lake; and quite abruptly, the pet starts to weaken and may begin to breath heavily/pant, hyper-salivate, shiver and collapse into a stupor—or worse, may faint away dead, with their body temperature usually registering at 106 or higher. But note that logical and reasonable pet management can help to prevent such calamities. Age, breed and coat condition—or any other medical condition— afflicting your pet should be taken into consideration when exercising them. Discuss preventive steps your veterinarian may want to include with my own suggestions above. Should you note signs of concern— and you verify an elevated temperature (104 degrees or higher)— immediately find shade and a source of water or ice, and begin to soak down your pet. Call your vet or the emergency facility, and rush along to make sure your pet is not suffering a true heatstroke condition. Often, elevated body temperatures begin to damage body tissues, with kidneys suffering as a result. Sunburn also is an issue, especially affecting

AT ABOUT 70 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, A DOG LEFT IN THE CAR WITH CLOSED WINDOWS COULD SUFFER HEATSTROKE IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES.

the muzzle region or other less-furry body parts that might result from shaving our pets too closely. Alert your groomer to make sure they don’t shave down too closely. Finally, remember that after any form of exercise, be careful not to allow your dog to engulf a ton of water. Large to giant breeds are especially susceptible to a condition called ‘bloat,’ in which the stomach swells with food, gas and/or water, and can turn on its own axis and shut down needed blood supply to the stomach and spleen. These dogs become toxic very quickly—and sadly, can pass within hours. Have a safe and enjoyable summer season with your pets, and give special attention to make sure they avoid heat exhaustion.

BY DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF

DR. DOUG’S RULES OF SUMMER CARE: 1. Walk pets early in the morning or after sunset. 2. Take a water source along with you—or be sure there are resources nearby. 3. Do not race dogs during the hot summer season. 4. Take a pocket digital thermometer with you, and check your dog if you note any behavioral changes or signs as mentioned herein. 5. Carry your veterinarian’s phone number, as well as the number for a nearby emergency vet facility.

LIV ING ALL-NATURAL FOOD

Food for Thought

Y ‌

OU KNOW WHAT TOY SHE loves, or which ear he prefers to be scratched—but how can you know what food your four-legged friend’s digestive system would prefer? We asked local animal experts to weigh in on all-natural pet food. Try thinking about pet food the way you think about your food. “When you’re giving yourself ingredients and foods that are in their natural state—they’re not processed, they haven’t gone through any synthetic stages or chemical processing—then your body can really digest those more optimally,” says Eric Emmenegger, senior brand manager of Instinct with Nature’s Variety. But do your research and read the labels. Unfortunately, plenty of what’s out there is “a marketing hoax,” according to Dr. Stacey Wallach of Town & Country Veterinary Hospital. “‘Organic,’ ‘holistic,’ ‘gourmet,’ [or] ‘humangrade,’ have no legal definition for pet food, and are purely marketing terms.” Wallach recommends purchasing pet food that follows Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional guidelines; by doing so, she explains, you can be sure you’re providing the proper nutrition for your animal’s life stage. Additionally, she recommends picking a brand with meat listed in the first three ingredients. “I have actually had vendors come in here and tell me certain brands of food that they carry will sustain life,” Wallach says. “To me, that is not sufficient…I could be kept alive on bread, but am I going to be in good health? No.” Depending on activity level and life stage, Teresa Miller, founder and owner of Treats Unleashed, says dogs should eat food that is 25 to 40 percent protein. She also recommends a highprotein wet-food diet for cats, “because they need as much moisture as they can possibly get and they just don’t need the carbs.” The term ‘byproducts’ often is mentioned in regards to unhealthy pet food, and it may not entirely deserve the negative reputation it has gotten. “A lot of byproducts are actually still good meat that are left for the animals,” explains Wallach. “Byproducts are not always the worst thing to have, but you want to make sure that the first ingredients are going to be of good quality—not just fillers.” By feeding a pet more nutritious food, pet owners can expect to find less pet waste in the yard. “The more quality food—the more bioavailable it is to the body—the more they absorb,” says Wallach. “The more they absorb, the less waste there is.” Visible perks of a balanced diet may include healthy skin, coat, weight and teeth. “A lot of the benefits that you end up seeing are from the inside out; you feed them well and give them the right

BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN

nutrition internally, and you see all the benefits externally,” Emmenegger says. Similarly, negative results with an opposing diet also may be seen. Unnatural ingredients—such as artificial coloring or preservatives—may be behind some animals’ food allergies or intolerances, explains Miller. If you plan to change your pet’s diet to allnatural, remember to transition slowly, advises Emmenegger. The transition process should take seven to 10 days, if not longer, he says. When switching to an all-natural food, Emmenegger recommends pet owners think about the cost-per-feeding as opposed to instant

sticker shock. “If you’re looking at the retail price of a natural food versus more of a standard brand, you’re going to see a difference—but, you’re feeding a lot less per meal because it’s more nutritiously dense,” he says. Miller reiterates the importance of the feeding amount. “Where we see pet parents go wrong is [remembering] that a cup is not a cup is not a cup—they all have different calorie counts and protein levels,” Miller says. “Your higher quality foods have a much higher calorie count; just feeding the same amount can get you into trouble. Portion size is key.” {LadueNews.com}  July 11, 2014

nce Upon A Time…Susan Bonan was watching the local news when she saw a dog that had been badly burned and found on the street by a Good Samaritan, who took him to the Humane Society of Missouri. Sonny, as the boxer would come to be known, was only a few months old when he was placed in intensive care for five months to recover from his ordeal. While Sonny was healing under the care of Dr. Steven Schwartz and the Humane Society’s staff, Bonan and her husband, Bill, called to inquire about him. “That was before I realized what an amazing facility they had,” she says. “We wanted to adopt him and take him to a specialist, but they would not release him because he was in intensive care, and that turned out to be the best thing.” After Sonny’s stay in intensive care was over, the staff called to let the Bonans know he was free to come home. The family took him home to meet their other dog, Sophae, a border collie they had found after she was abandoned at 4 months old, along with their adult children, Katherine and Bill, and Bill’s two dogs. “We introduced Sonny to them one by one, and they were all friends by the end of the day,” Bonan says.

Some time later, Humane Society president Kathy Warnick called to see if the Bonans could bring Sonny by for some pictures. It was then that Bonan says she realized just how good the staff had been to their new pet. “I thought it would be hard on Sonny, that going back there would remind him of all he’d been through,” she says. “But he couldn’t wait to get there. He was so happy to see Dr. Schwartz and all the girls who worked with him! It indicated to me that he had loving people who took care of him while he was in intensive care.” Though the rescue organization’s staff conducted an investigation into who burned Sonny, no answers have been found. But apart from a patch on his shoulder that won’t grow hair, Bonan says Sonny has recovered swimmingly from his experience. Her family enjoys walks almost daily in nearby Forest Park, and Sonny is always up for a romp with his toys. “He’s ve r y o u tgo i n g —wh e re Sophae is more reserved and shy, Sonny demands attention. The two of them get along great! Although, Sophae does look at me from time to time and ask why we had to bring him home,” she jokes. “He just wants to go every minute! It takes several of us to wear him out.” All of the Bonans’ dogs have been rescues, and they couldn’t be happier about it. “I like the idea of giving a home to a deserving dog—they all deserve to be in a loving home,” Bonan says. And to others who are thinking about going the rescue route, she says, “Don’t hesitate! You can get some wonderful companions and they need loving homes.”

‌Sherwin-Williams Predicts Bright Outlook The Sherwin-Williams residential Colormix 2015 forecast is filled with optimistic stories that provide fresh color combinations to inspire creativity. “We’re seeing a more cheerful approach to design and have forecasted colors that will provide a range of inspiration for designers,” says Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams’ director of color marketing. Jordan, along with Sherwin-Williams color experts, researched trends in art, fashion, science and pop culture to determine the 40 colors that make up the forecast. They are grouped into four palettes: Chrysalis, Voyage, Buoyant and Unrestrained. Unrestrained Embracing bold, ethnicinspired colors and design hallmarks of the Bohemian lifestyle, the Unrestrained palette celebrates a carefree spirit, wanderlust and pulsing color. It features saturated primary hues, including sunny yellow, lively turquoise and bright blue, as well as black and white, Jordan says. Each can be used on its own for a pop of color, or combined to create a vibrant, Sherwin-Williams Unrestrained palette energetic space. “South Africa’s colorful art scene and focus on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have strongly influenced a Carnival-like spirit...and the vibrant colors of Unrestrained are a reflection of that design aesthetic.”

Sherwin-Williams Bouyant palette

July 11, 2014    {LadueNews.com}

Buoyant The colors of the Buoyant palette are reminiscent of vintage floral patterns – including both light and deep greens, violets and a pop of coral. The palette is inspired by natural healing of botanicals, as well as the incorporation of green spaces into even the most densely urban environments. Backyards, once a landscaping afterthought, are now as important as front yards, with builders investing in rear curb appeal and outdoor rooms, Jordan says.

Sherwin-Williams Chrysalis palette

Chrysalis As technology rushes relentlessly ahead, the colors of Chrysalis evoke a calm oasis — a place to pause and find balance. With colors ranging from offblack to chalky neutrals and dusty blues, this palette is designed to create a calm, comfortable interior. “An important influence for Chrysalis is the earth’s natural striations,” Jordan observes. “The patterns created by land and sky are driving design inspiration; therefore the palette’s colors are found in nature, from rocks found on the beach to a stormy sky.” Voyage

Sherwin-Williams Voyage palette

From space tourism to undersea resorts, the once far-fetched sci-fi dreams of the past are closer to viability than ever before. The Voyage palette looks to these outer limits, featuring hues that represent the color spectrum imagined while emerging from the water into the atmosphere: undersea teal, bright green kelp, light watery blue and deep space purple. “The colors of Voyage are supernatural and magical,” according to Jordan. “The palette is largely driven by unusual atmospheric events, including a decade-best aurora borealis. The lighter colors of the palette create a space that is uplifting, while the deeper tones can be combined for a more dramatic design.”

St. Louisan Lands a Role on HGTV Competition St. Louis mother and interior-design student Peggy Tart nailed a coveted spot on HGTV’s Brother vs. Brother. The six-episode series features twins Jonathan and Drew Scott, who each mentor a team of five home-improvement experts as they renovate, remodel and decorate outdated properties. Tart is a member of Team Jonathan, a daring group of home renovators facing the most fierce design challenges to date. Their goal is to raise the market value of their property and avoid elimination by a panel of expert judges. Each week, the losing coach must send home the weakest link, until only one designer remains. Tart, who works as a retail visual-display manager for Ashley Furniture in St. Louis, brings a number of strengths to the design table, including space planning, fabric selection and coordination, painting, accessorizing, repurposing and selecting finishes. Although she has no renovation experience, she runs a small freelance interior design business and is determined to achieve her career goals. Possessing a unique design vision from a young age, Tart says she lets her Peggy Tart personality shine through her “eclectic and bold” style. HGTV’s Brother vs. Brother airs Sunday, July 13, at 8 p.m.

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers Expands to St. Louis Leslie Hindman Auctioneers now has a presence in St. Louis with the opening of a new facility at 32 N. Brentwood Blvd. in Clayton. The company auctions everything from contemporary paintings and fine jewelry to French furniture and rare books and manuscripts and has more than 50 auctions scheduled in 2014. Three to four auctions are likely to take place at the new Clayton location within the first year, in addition to sending major works of art and jewelry to Chicago for sale. “ We h a v e received so many wonderful consignments of Leslie Hindman fine art, jewelry and decorative arts from the St. Louis area; it only makes sense that it be our next market for expansion,” says CEO Leslie Hindman, who notes that the St. Louis expansion plan has been in the works for more than two years. “St. Louis is a sophisticated market filled with important collectors, museums and other institutions, and has long been in need of a reputable, established auction house.” Founded in 1982, sold to Sotheby’s in 1997, and reopened in 2003, Leslie Hindman’s maintains its primary office in Chicago. It has 12 regional offices and auction facilities around the country in places like Naples and Palm Beach, Florida and in Denver and Milwaukee.

Compact Fluorescent (CFL)

Light-Emitting Diode (LED)

End of an Era: Incandescent Bulbs Replaced by EnergyEfficient Alternatives You may have noticed the dwindling supply of 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs at local stores, following the January 2014 governmentmandated phase-out of these bulbs. So you will probably need to rethink the way you light your home. As if decorating weren’t already complicated enough… So what are your options? According to Pam Price, consumer lighting expert at Osram Sylvania, choices in the post-incandescent era include halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL) and LED. Below, Price provides an explanation of lighting-related terms, which you can use on your next shopping trip to the hardware store. Light-Emitting Diode (LED): An LED is a semiconductor chip that emits light when an electric current passes through it. “LEDs provide white light in various shades. The most incandescentlike light would be soft white. Despite having a higher upfront cost, LED bulbs can last 20 to 25 times longer than traditional incandescents and are up to 85 percent more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs.” Compact Fluorescent (CFL): Often spiral in shape, Price says these high-efficiency bulbs use a fluorescent phosphor coating to transform energy into visible light,” Price explains. “Improvements in CFL technology have reduced the harsh light often associated with them and they are now available in soft white, bright white and daylight colors. Though you will also pay more up front, a CFL bulb can last up to 12 times longer than

Halogen

traditional incandescents and consume up to 75 percent less energy than an incandescent bulb. Some, but not all, CFLs are dimmable – make sure to check the packaging.” Halogen: These energy-efficient bulbs use halogen gas and generally emit a clearer and slightly whiter light than incandescent light bulbs, according to Price. “Halogen bulbs are shaped like the incandescent bulbs they replace, are fully dimmable and they don’t contain mercury. While halogen bulbs cost more than the outdated incandescent bulbs, they use one-third less energy and therefore have a lower operating cost.” Watts: While many consumers link watts with brightness, wattage is actually a measure of power consumption, Price explains. “As halogen, CFL and LED bulbs consume less power, they will have a much lower wattage than an incandescent bulb that produces the same amount of light. In other words, a lower wattage number indicates greater energy savings, not necessarily a lower light output.” Lumens: Price says a higher lumen number indicates a brighter bulb, while a lower lumen number indicates a dimmer bulb. “Lumens will guide you to the bulb that has the amount of light you want–so when shopping for your new bulbs think lumens, not watts.” Lumens Per Watt (LPW): Price says LPW is a measure of a light bulb’s efficiency, similar to miles per gallon for cars. “A higher LPW rating indicates greater energy efficiency and increased savings for your home.” Like we said, as if home decorating weren’t already hard enough… Continued on page 40 {LadueNews.com} JULY 11, 2014

LuLu Belles Makes It Easy to Spruce Up Homes this Summer Many St. Louisans know that locally owned LuLu Belles Fabrics on Manchester Road in Des Peres has been offering high-end fabrics since 2005. What many don’t realize is that the company also offers other products and services perfect for the do-it-yourself home decorator. “We not only sell fabrics, we also sell wallpaper and furniture,” says GM Mary Beth Leritz. “We have work rooms that do all of our work, such as draperies, upholsteries and pillows. Everything is done here in St. Louis.” We caught up with Leritz recently to find out what’s new at Lulu Belle’s, as well as what St. Louisans can do to easily and economically update their homes this summer. What advice do you have for St. Louisans who want to spruce up their homes for summer without spending a fortune? Adding a pop of color through pillows or simple drapery panels can always freshen a space without investing major dollars. Replacing outdated drapery rods with newer and trendier ones can update any room. Do indoor/outdoor fabrics now rival traditional indoor-only fabrics in terms of style and popularity? All the major vendors have entered the indoor/ outdoor market. The solids, stripes and simple textures offered by Sunbrella are just as popular as the wovens, florals, animal prints and geometric patterns now entering the marketplace. Their popularity is due to the advances in functionality, texture and style. Indoor/outdoor fabrics offer UV protection, durability for all types of weather, and stain resistance. And they can be easily cleaned up with mild soap and water. 40

Diane Von Fustenberg fabrics and trim in the Berry palette

Tilton Fenwick collection from Duralee

What are some other important trends that you’re seeing right now? Washable fabrics are just entering the market. It’s a question we get on a daily basis from our customers. Ikat has been around for a long time, but its popularity is not waning and it pairs perfectly with animal prints to complete most looks. Solid linen panels, with or without trim, are big sellers for us. Grasscloth wallpaper is never a wrong choice and the options are endless from silk to washable. What new brands or collections are you showing this summer? Diane Von Furstenberg is bringing her iconic style and use of pattern and color to an exclusive collection of fabric and trims being offered through Kravet. Tilton Fenwick, a NYC boutique

interior design firm, has launched a line of fabrics through Duralee. Its traditional designs are infused with a fresh perspective and an unexpected approach to color. Phillip Jeffries has delivered new trends to his wallpaper collections inspired by global looks that are designed to transport us. Finally, the new Cole & Sons Foile Collection takes its inspiration from statues, follies, menageries and architecture found within grand French landscaped gardens. Leritz says the showroom offers in-stock fabric, but special orders are available and normally arrive within seven business days. She says the store prides itself on customer service. “We never want anyone to walk into our store and not feel welcome; we want everyone to feel like they’re part of the LuLu Belles family.”

OR MILLENNIALS, BUYING A HOME STILL SEEMS TO BE part of the American Dream. According to the 2014 National Association of Realtors Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends study, the millennial group is the largest among recent homebuyers in the U.S., with ages 33 and younger comprising 31 percent of recent home purchases. “Millennials are the largest generation in history after the baby boomers; and since many still aspire to one day invest in their future through home ownership, they will drive future housing demand,” says the association’s chief economist Lawrence Yun. In today’s virtual world, potential homebuyers have residential real estate at their fingertips through smartphones and tablets. Yet, rather than completing their entire home-buying search online, millennials also are looking for personal guidance—and, oftentimes, finding it in the expertise of a realtor, explains Beth Braznell, president of the St. Louis Association of REALTORS. “Getting information from the Internet is a lot like trying to take a drink from a fire hydrant. Young buyers are looking to realtors to help them understand and interpret all this information, give them insight into everything that goes into the home-buying decision and guide them through the process. This is the largest financial transaction of their lives, so they are looking for someone they believe is honest and trustworthy.” That’s why this young generation is most likely to hire an agent based on a reference from a friend or relative, Braznell notes. “As this is probably their first venture into the real-estate market, a recommendation from mom or dad—or perhaps a good friend who just went through the process—is going to carry more weight than any online reviews.” But as millennials clamor toward the housing market, they are facing Continued on page 52

I’ve always been grateful to Elsie de Wolfe, who was known as America’s ‘first lady of interior decoration,’ for creating an interest in hiring a design professional. Her advice to avoid clutter in favor of simplicity, and emphasize sunshine and light colors still resonates a century later.

From his stunning architecture and interiors to his affinity for the written word, the great Southern architect and writer Bobby McAlpine has long been my inspiration. A true romantic, his approach to design is soulful and eloquent. He brilliantly mixes time-honored materials with modern layouts, creating decidedly sophisticated yet comforting spaces.

‘Master’ might be a strong word, but I’ve taken a liking to Kelly Wearstler. Daring and provocative, her designs excite the viewer, making you look once, twice, three times and more. Look her up—you’ll see!

HIS 3-STORY ARTS AND CRAFTS manse in the historic Hampton Park neighborhood is truly one-of-akind. Listed on the Historic Registry, the residence has been re-imagined to have an atmosphere like that of a European auberge. The outside of the home is just as fabulous as the inside, thanks to the brick walls, patios, walkways, lily pond, gardens, fountains and pool. The outdoor barbecue area has an additional fireplace for S’mores on chilly nights, and—through a covered arbor of wisteria—adjoins the pool house, with a common area, kitchen, bathroom and 3-car garage. Enter the home through the vestibule foyer, which opens to the gently gilded formal living and dining rooms. You’ll love hosting weekend brunches for family and friends in the kitchen, hearth and breakfast area, next to the paneled and beamed great room. Stunning details such as ivory walls, French doors, picture moldings and large fireplaces add sophistication to the space.

DIVERSIONS

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess

BY MARK BRETZ

COMPANY: National Touring Company

STORY: Life in the 1930s is hard for the African-American residents of Catfish Row, an impoverished area of Charleston, South Carolina, that survives on fishing, picking cotton and other hardscrabble means of subsistence. It’s even tougher for Porgy, who was born with a withered left leg that hinders his ability to find manual labor but whose congeniality elevates the spirits of his neighbors.

VENUE: The Muny in Forest Park

When Crown, a hulking, glowering man with a chip on his shoulder, accuses his neighbor, Robbins, of cheating in a craps game, he kills Robbins and flees to nearby Kittiwah Island before the authorities arrive. Before leaving, though, he warns ‘his’ woman—the high-living Bess—that he’ll return for her soon.

DATES: Through July 13 TICKETS: Free to $85; 534-1111 or metrotix.com

Seeking a place to stay, Bess is befriended by Porgy, despite the warnings of the strong-willed Mariah that Bess is a woman of loose morals and a junkie to boot, courtesy of the fancy-dressing Sporting Life. Porgy and Bess fall in love, but can that love stand up to Crown’s tyranny and Sporting Life’s constant temptations?

This touring company production playing at The Muny this week is a dish that’s been seasoned by many chefs. First of all, it’s titled The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess to differentiate from the original folk opera composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira Gershwin, and a libretto by DuBose Heyward, who authored the original novel, Porgy, in 1925. Winner of the 2011 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, this version of Porgy and Bess features a cast filled with magnificent singers who caress, coax and command Ira Gershwin’s folksy lyrics and capture the essence of George Gershwin’s musical genius—no easy feat considering the difficulty of his music. It’s an extremely complicated work, and much of the time Gershwin’s elaborate and intricate compositions are beyond the scope of anyone attuned to more popular music, which includes a lot of us. The streamlined version put together by Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright Suzan Lori-Parks, director Diane Paulus and composer Diedre Murray resonates, thanks to their collection of extremely talented singers who make this rendition soar. The five major roles each benefits from some wonderful singing. Nathaniel Stampley, e.g., is affecting and achingly persuasive

as the genial Porgy. His delivery of I Got Plenty of Nothing is buoyant and exhilarating in his upbeat, affirmative rendition. Perhaps the best voice in the cast is possessed by Danielle Lee Greaves, whose Mariah is a formidable force of nature, shaking a stern finger at the ‘low-lifes’ who deviate from the straight and narrow path she advocates. When she belts out I Hates Your Strutting Style, it’s with an admonition that even Sporting Life recognizes.

More reviews available at laduenews.com

Former St. Louisan Kingsley Leggs, who elevated many a Black Rep production several years ago, does a smooth version of It Ain’t Necessarily So as the scheming Sporting Life, playing the decadent dandy as a constant enticement for the fragile Bess. His urbane villainy is complemented by Alvin Crawford’s imposing, unsettling nastiness as the crude and abusive Crown. And Alicia Hall Moran makes Bess a subject of pity more than scorn or repudiation as she underscores both Bess’ willful intentions to change into a better woman for Porgy and her weakness in succumbing to the overpowering temptations of the flesh. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is an updated, streamlined, invigorating version of a complex folk opera that accentuates the musical genius and versatility that was George Gershwin.

To help celebrate the Missouri History Museum’s American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition exhibit, the folks at Bixby’s are offering a series of happy hours this summer inspired by the exhibition. On Tuesday, July 22, and Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., guests can enjoy locally inspired hors d’oeuvres and desserts, paired with a Pinckney Bend or Anheuser-Busch tasting. Each happy hour ticket also includes admission to the exhibit. For tickets and information, call 454-3151 or visit bixbys-mohistory.com. Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Company, the upcoming eatery from Sidney Street Cafe chef/owner KEVIN NASHAN, recently garnered a spot on Eater National’s ‘48 Most Anticipated Openings of Summer 2014’ list. The restaurant will have a seafood focus and is scheduled to open in August at 1831 Sidney St. in Benton Park, the former home of Niche. Local developer Show Me Hospitality is bringing Tim Hortons Cafe & Bake Shop and its menu of coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, soups and distinctive donuts to St. Louis. The group plans to open 40 shops in the area by 2019. The first locations are expected to open next year. The Canadian chain currently has more than 4,500 locations worldwide. It’s been a tough summer so far—here are a few more closures we’ve learned of: Lola, located at 500 North 14th St. downtown, has closed its doors. Lemmons in South City has shuttered, as well. And the folks at The Nest, which opened late last year at 10440 German Blvd. in Frontenac, have announced that they will be closing down this month.

Giovanni’s Kitchen

Classics from The Kitchen

BY SIDNEY LEWIS

THERE’S CERTAINLY NO SHORTAGE OF GREAT Italian food in St. Louis. But while the field may be crowded, there always seems to be room for another top-notch Italian eatery like Giovanni’s Kitchen, the new place from the folks behind Creve Coeur favorite Il Bel Lago. Located in Ladue’s Colonial Marketplace shopping center, the exterior of the restaurant may be nondescript, but the interior is anything but. The deep red walls and intricate light fixtures contribute to an atmosphere that’s inviting and comfortable, as well as stylish. The name is a nod to owners Frank and Carmelo Gabriele’s father, the eponymous force behind the venerable Giovanni’s On The Hill. We started off with a couple of classic appetizers that were on either side of the flavor and texture spectrums. The Prosciutto E Melone ($10) featured large chunks of mild, juicy melon wrapped in prosciutto, while the Polpettine ($8) was a plate of savory meatballs with tomato sauce on the side and topped with shaved Parmigiano. As a prelude to the main event, we also dug into the Burrata Al Pomodoro ($9), a fresh and delicious combo of mozzarella, tomato and olive oil—truly the epitome of the summer salad. The menu has a solid assortment of entrees featuring veal, pork, chicken and seafood. But we were especially interested in the array of housemade pasta dishes offered, especially the fact that each was available in a small, shareable size. We went big and ordered the petite versions of the Gnocchi Di Ricotta ($9), the Casoncelli ($9), and

the Pappardelle Alla Bolognese ($9). Real madefrom-scratch pasta is one of the finer things you can put in your mouth, and all of these varied versions were as good as you’ll find anywhere around town. The ricotta gnocchi was melt-inyour-mouth perfection; and the casoncelli (small ravioli-like pasta) and the pappadelle were both tender but with just the right firmness so as not to be flabby. Just as the pastas were perfectly crafted, so, too, were the sauces. The standout of the three was the Bolognese sauce that ensconced the papardelle. Deep, dark and rich, thanks to generous amounts of Chianti, it was a complex amalgam of flavors; and the wide noodles proved to be the perfect delivery method for them. We finished up with a dessert sampler, the Panna Cotta Trio ($8), which consisted of three versions of this traditional Italian treat: Madagascar vanilla bean, bourbon and fresh orange, and semi-sweet chocolate. While the base panna cotta on its own had a great consistency and flavor, the chocolate version really stood out. Price-wise, Giovanni’s Kitchen is extremely affordable, especially considering all of the scratch-made goodness available. With a culinary pedigree like that of the Gabrieles’, we had a feeling Giovanni’s Kitchen was going to be good—and we weren’t disappointed!

LN COOKS

Crisp & Creamy Crab Rangoon BY JOHN JOHNSON

Q: Chef, I love Crab Rangoon and would love to make some, but I’m afraid they won’t turn out as good as the ones at the restaurant. I am not even sure what type of dough I need to use. Can you give me an easy recipe I can try at home?

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

2 jalapeno peppers

A: Wonton skins, made from flour, egg, water and salt, are used for many things like dumplings, pot stickers and Rangoon. Just as with Italian pasta, the shape and cooking method determines what you are making. The Crab Rangoon has a difficult history to nail down: Some say it originated in San Francisco in the early ’50s, while there are a few who claim that it originated here in Missouri. Wherever the birthplace of this delicious creation is, it is one of the most common appetizers in Chinese-American cuisine.

1 can crab meat, large lump

Pick crab to remove any small pieces of shell that might be mixed in. Roast peppers until skin begins to blister and blacken. Peel skin and remove seeds, then mince. Blend all items together and reserve.

½ c sugar 1 t ginger, minced 1 t garlic, minced 2 t Worcestershire sauce 1 package wonton skins 1 egg, beaten Vegetable oil

Beat the egg separately. This will be used to hold the wonton together after filling. Place 1 teaspoon of the mixture into each wonton skin and brush the egg mixture around the four edges of the skin. Fold the four corners up the center and seal the edges together. At this time, you can cook them in a 350-degree fryer or freeze them for later use.

Chef John Johnson is executive chef at River City Casino. For questions or recipe requests, email him at John.Johnson@rivercity.com.

I love the fact that wonton skins are great for creating your own signature dishes. Try filling them with Italian sausage, meatballs, or even go vegetarian with a thick vegetable stew. If you want a quick and easy dessert, try pie filling or cookie dough inside with a dusting of powdered sugar.

of the services in one location. It’s semi-private, with walls on three sides, and we’ve angled the line of sight so you’re not looking at the guy in the next station.” That’s ideal for men who might be trying new services for the first time. “Especially with the younger generation, a lot of them have been raised around spa environments or have had exposure to places like The Art of Shaving,” Bryan says. “They’ve been introduced to the idea that it’s OK for men to be pampered, and it’s not such a bad thing. It’s pretty cool and relaxing to have those services done. What (we) create is the ability to experiment and try those services in an environment where they’re comfortable and don’t feel people are watching them.” And those services—be it a haircut, coloring, a shave with a straight-edge blade, or a nail treatment—are performed by trained professionals with three to 15 years of experience, Bryan says. “We’ve put together an amazing team of stylists, and two are barbers, which allows for a classic shaving experience.” He adds that new Groom’s Party packages offer grooms-to-be a private party with complimentary beverages and a range of services to get the men looking their best for the wedding. “We had people ready to sign up as soon as we had the package ready.” Are you ready for a grooming service tailored just for you? Then come in, enjoy a beverage and have a seat. The rest is taken care of.

some roadblocks along the journey to ownership. The Generational Trends study also shows that 20 percent of those polled in this age group said obstacles included difficulty saving for a down-payment, citing student loan debt as their main financial challenge. Additional limitations that were found included tight credit, limited inventory and the possibility of rising interest rates. However, these hurdles don’t seem to be intimidating young buyers from aiming to achieve the goal of home ownership. According to the study, the generation values the longterm benefits and economic security of owning a house, with 87 percent polled reporting that they consider it a good financial investment. Realtors know that younger people often need to make compromises to get into their new home, but agents can help guide buyers along the path to ownership, Braznell notes. “Desired size and location are usually negotiable when buying a home, and most buyers are willing to make financial sacrifices if it means they can make this important investment in their future.”

designs, for $10 at some local Starbucks locations throughout August. “We help people with developmental disabilities learn, live, work and participate in our communities,” Sullivan says. “We recognize that people with developmental disabilities have something to offer. Our job is to help them learn to become as independent and self-sufficient as they can.” Starbucks is involved with Easter Seals Midwest through sponsorships and food and beverage donations, as well as active volunteer work from its employees. Recently, Starbucks employees improved an Easter Seals Midwest client’s home through the Adopt-A-Home project. Additionally, the company hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Day. “Starbucks is about being involved in their communities, and that’s what we want for people with developmental disabilities,” explains Sullivan. “Our most important message is that we want people to be included in the community; it’s two organizations that work together very well.” Sullivan says the project will continue in the future, noting that other Easter Seals Midwest clients would like to be involved, as well. “We have more clients who want to participate than we can even accommodate.”

be discussed one-on-one with a stylist to address individual hair needs, noting that many of these products are available over-the-counter. Regardless of the products you use, Peschell offers a tidbit of universal hair-care advice: “Stop combing your hair when it’s wet. It stretches the

hair and makes it lose elasticity.” Instead, she suggests brushing hair before washing it gently, applying conditioner, and then blotting it dry instead of rubbing with a towel. “Let your hair dry naturally and then style it. It will have shine and hold the style better—you may be surprised at how great it looks.”
