SOCIETY WHO DOESN’T LOVE A STORYBOOK ENDING? I’VE BEEN FORTUNATE enough to have had a few fairy tales play out in my life—and a couple of really momentous ones involve actual tails: tail-waggers, to be exact. This week, we are delighted to introduce you to Happily Ever After, a new column about former shelter pets who have found their perfect family. These animals, previously abandoned and unloved, have been given a second lease on life—thanks to the determination of local animal welfare volunteers who’ve rescued them from their plight, as well as the families who consciously decide to seek them out at the local shelter. While at times, I get sad and overwhelmed thinking about the countless shelter animals waiting to be picked, I think more about the happiness all around when someone decides to take home the newest member of their family. Have I got a couple of fairy tails to tell you!

ORE THAN 3,400 GUESTS dined and danced under the stars at Saint Louis Zoo’s biennial creative black-tie event, Zoofari 2013, dubbed St. Louis’ ‘Best Party in Tow n .’ T h e e n d a n ge re d Grevy’s zebra, with its classy black-and-white-striped coat, was the inspiration for this year’s theme. Folks kicked up their heels and strutted their stripes in formal wear from coats and ties (or tails and claws) to spots and animal patterns of all kinds. Huey Lewis and the News thrilled partygoers with rock and rhythm and blues, followed by additional entertainment by Fabulous Motown Revue, DJ Nune, Griffin and the Gargoyles, Peter Schankman Trio and DJ Andrew Mullins. Specialty food and drinks from more than 60 of St. Louis’ finest restaurants and caterers were served from lavishly themed booths. Co-chairs for the evening were Steve Schankman and Barbara Archer.

The event raised more than $400,000 for Thompson Center.

The CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM (CAM) will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its critically acclaimed building with an exhibition called Place is the Space. On view from Sept. 6 through Dec. 29, the exhibit will kick off a year-long celebration to commemorate the 2003 opening of CAM’s 27,000-squarefoot museum, which was designed with open spaces to allow for maximum flexibility in the artwork on display. In related news, CAM is the recipient of a $75,000 grant from THE ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION FOR THE VISUAL ARTS for a major solo exhibition of the work of American artist NICOLE EISENMAN. When a local 4-year-old would not speak, his family felt they had nowhere to turn. But Life Skills was there. After two weeks in its parent training program, his typical forms of communication— screaming, kicking and biting—were translated into 200 new vocabulary words. “All the language was in there, we just had to help him learn how to release it. Once we worked with him, the floodgates opened,” explains CEO Wendy Sullivan. Unfortunately, Sullivan says this scenario is not uncommon among clients. That’s why Life Skills merged last year with Touch Point Autism Services—to reach an increasing number of families impacted by autism who need life-transforming services. Now the largest social services agency of its kind in Missouri, the nonprofit serves a total of 4,200 children, teens and adults with developmental disabilities, including 3,000 autistic individuals and their families in 95 counties. “We have expanded in all of our service areas—autism services, employment services and community living—and we already are seeing growth after one year,” Sullivan says.

For recently diagnosed families, ‘family navigators’ are available to help guide them through the steps that are needed to help their loved one. “We teach parents how to be therapists in their own homes,” Sullivan explains. “The parents are really expert therapists after we work with them. They have learned how to unlock that language, and their kids are speaking.” Some families benefit from regular ongoing therapy, while many get the maximum benefit from the agency’s intensive, two-week training program. Therapists can go into families’ homes and help them each step of the way. Some kids don’t like to be touched, are unable to sit through mealtime, or have trouble bathing or sleeping. “We work with families in their homes on reallife issues,” Sullivan says. “After parent training, we see families who are happier and doing things together and enjoying their child.” Sullivan says all of this would not be possible without the dedication of more than 500 agency volunteers. Two of those volunteers, Tom Caruso and Dan Kelley, have made a particularly large

Through spearheading the fourth annual Autism Invitational golf tournament in June at Boone Valley Golf Club, they helped raise $250,000—up from the $131,000 total of last year’s event. f constant shaving is a bother—especially during the skin-baring summer months— laser hair removal may offer a permanent solution. however, experts say it’s important to be realistic about the procedure. “the treatment should be looked at as hair reduction, not hair removal,” says tonya pollak, a nurse with synergi Medspa. “it’s impossible to guarantee no hair permanently in an area. Keep in mind, the body is programmed with hormones to be hair-bearing in certain areas. for instance, it’s possible to need a touch-up treatment a year or two later.” Dr. richard Moore, medical director of the lifestyle center, agrees, noting that the end-point for hair reduction typically is 60 to 90 percent from baseline after five to 10 treatments. “laser hair removal is an effective procedure for reducing unwanted hair in most individuals. however, people with very fine and/or poorly pigmented hair follicles will not respond as well,” he says. “additionally, it is reported in the literature that 3

to 5 percent of people will not respond to the laser procedure as expected.” because people respond to the procedure in different ways, the technologies used are adjusted based on individual needs. at synergi, for instance, three different lasers stand ready to reduce unwanted hair. Determining which laser to use depends on the natural skin pigment. “those that have fair skin can use a laser that is more effective in fewer treatments and tends to be stronger. those that have more pigment would need to use a laser that is safer for their skin tone but then would require more treatments to achieve the ideal result,” pollak says. pigment, or melanin, which gives the skin and hair its color, is the substance that responds to laser treatments. because of this, it’s best to avoid sun exposure prior to a laser hair removal procedure, Moore says. “When the skin is tanned, there’s an increase in melanin and less aggressive Continued on page 61

f you’ve ever noticed a bumpy, red rash on your upper arms and thighs, don’t worry—this is not ‘arm acne.’ in fact, the little red bumps are not pimples. they are caused by a common, harmless and easily treatable condition known as keratosis pilaris. Keratosis pilaris actually is caused by blocked hair follicles. it’s more common in people who have allergies, hay fever or eczema. “Keratosis is latin for the ‘hair unit,’ and pilaris means ‘crusting,’ so the name is descriptive—hair-unit crusting,” says dr. Joseph Muccini, a dermatologist with the Mid-America Skin Health and vitality center. “this condition usually presents in childhood with rough bumps on the outer upper arms or the front of the thighs, giving the skin a sandpapery texture,” says dr. daniel ring, a dermatologist with West county dermatology. “commonly, the face is involved with similar bumps and a striking circular redness on the lateral cheeks. the facial bumps often are mistaken for acne by parents. improvement is frequently seen around puberty, but the condition can worsen with puberty, persist into adulthood, and sometimes develop in adulthood.” Muccini explains that hair follicles are like machines that compact and move skin cells to the surface where they are naturally shed. oil glands add secretions to the mix, and the dead skin cells and oil are usually excreted and sloughed away. But some individuals don’t have enough oil to lubricate the dead cells’ journey out of the hair follicle, and it becomes clogged with ‘schmutz,’ as Muccini refers to it. if the resulting raised red spots are squeezed, like pimples, they will not burst and express pus like a typical acne pimple. instead, the thick, whitish globule of dead cells will be expressed, but Muccini warns that trying to squeeze or pop these small eruptions can lead to infection and scarring. “the condition is typically a cosmetic concern, initially with bumps and/or redness as the primary complaint. dry weather can exacerbate the roughness and itching can also be seen. exercise can temporarily make the redness, especially in the cheeks, much more prominent,” ring says. fortunately, treatment is simple and involves moisturizing the skin and using mild acid-based products to help clear the skin. “this condition is easy to manage,” Muccini says. Moisturizing is key, and he suggests using a gentle soap and tepid water to shower or bathe, followed by a good moisturizer applied using strokes in a single direction. over-the-counter products with salicylic acid or other mild acids, such as Amlactin or cerave SA, can help slough away the ‘schmutz.’ “this isn’t a worrisome condition. it’s a nuisance,” Muccini says. “luckily, it’s a nuisance that can be managed and controlled.”

Fad is Bad By Connie MitChell

he AlkAline Diet. the BABy FooD Diet. the Blood type Diet. the Paleo Diet. the hCG Diet. the list goes on and on... For people who are overweight or obese, and have tried to lose weight without success, fad diets offer hope. “Perhaps this one will work,” we think. yet most experts note that the reason there are so many fad diets is because they don’t work for long-term weight loss, leading people to continue the cycle of try and try again. “Fad diets come and go. Anything to promise a quick fix appeals to the public,” says Dotti Durbin, a Washington university diabetes educator and registered dietitian. “Some popular diets, such as South Beach, have some good attributes and have taught America about the importance of whole grains and providing meal plans and recipes that are well-balanced. But i am less fond of the first phase of the South Beach Diet, where it is a strict

avoidance plan, characteristic of a fad diet.” in fact, dietitians warn against any diet that eliminates entire categories of foods. “A person could end up being deficient in the nutrients that food group provides,” notes Cindy Martin, an outpatient dietitian with Mercy Bariatric Center. For instance, if a plan eliminates all grains, the B complex vitamins (riboflavin, niacin and thiamin) could be missed, which help promote a healthy attitude and appetite, she says. Diets that require supplement use are another red flag for Martin. “Any plan that requires purchase of special food or supplements should be scrutinized,” she says. “Supplements do not have regulation oversight for content, cleanliness or effectiveness. the majority of nutrition supplements are not considered food, so they fall outside the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration.”

Another danger of fad diets is the likelihood of losing and gaining weight, yo-yo style. “Fad diets usually end up slowing down one’s metabolism and causing more weight regain in the end,” says Deanna Miller, a clinical nutrition manager at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. “People should ask themselves, Can I eat this way for the rest of my life? if not, then it’s not for them.” So what can we do to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way? Dietitians agree that it comes down to a well-balanced diet—consumed in moderate portions—and paired with regular physical activity. Durbin provides specifics: “When choosing a diet, look for those that are well-balanced in the food groups so that they can provide adequate nutrients for good health. e put our hair through a lot trying to get the latest look—but sometimes, all of that effort turns against us as we damage our locks with blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners and the elements. to help return your hair to its natural beauty, we spoke with industry veteran Jerry Dial, who recently opened up shop at Cheveux in Brentwood. Summer Frizz one of the most common hair problems during the heat of a St. louis summer is frizz, Dial says. “the best way to control that frizz is to start in the shower: use cooler water when you shampoo, because hot water opens the cuticle of the hair, and the humidity in the air makes it even worse,” he says. air-dry your hair as much as possible in the summer, he suggests, especially if it’s curly. Dial also recommends a smoothing product such as Moroccan oil. “it’s my favorite right now. it’s the most unusual oil—it goes into the cuticle rather than lying on top of the hair, which can make the hair oily. once you find the right product for you, you’ve got it made.” once the hair is dry, a product like Smooth & Seal can close the hair’s cuticles, and a flat iron can finish the look, Dial says. other options for extreme frizz include a keratin smoothing system such as Coppola. unlike early keratin treatments that have been banned because they contained formaldehyde, new systems smooth the hair without harmful chemicals, while maintaining volume, he says.

Thinning hair thinning hair can be caused by many factors, from age to illness and giving birth, Dial says. But typically, it means that the body is lacking something. “if you go through pregnancy, you’re loading up with prenatal vitamins, and then you quit taking them,” he notes. “i recommend to keep taking the prenatal vitamins for a couple of months so you don’t lose that surge of vitamins.” others experiencing hair loss might consider taking biotin or an everyday supplement. to make the hair look fuller in the short-term, many products like mousse, thickening powder or dry shampoo can do the trick, he adds.

Fade OuT in the summer, many people find their hair color fades more quickly than normal, especially reds, Dial notes. to make your hair color last the way your stylist intended, go for a sulfate-free shampoo and wash with cooler water, he says. Several brands, including aveda and Bumble & bumble, also offer color shampoos with pigments that help prolong the color. But sometimes, the simplest prevention is staying out of the sun: “a lot of people will come in during the summer and say the top of their hair looks so light. i recommend closing the sunroof if you’re driving around, or wearing a hat.” SpliTTing up Blow-drying is a big culprit for split ends, Dial notes. “a split end is a raised cuticle of the hair. When you’re drying, be cautious to dry in the direction of the hair, not blowing against it. air-drying also helps a lot, and use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.” products that provide thermal protection also can help, as well as being consistent about getting your hair trimmed and using a highquality boar-bristle brush.

nce upon a time…there was a dog you couldn’t begin to describe with words like ‘active’ or ‘hyper.’ coal, a lab mix, is the type of dog who will climb up a tree trunk after a squirrel, says owner linda palmer. in fact, he’s on a two-year probation after being accused of incessant barking—although palmer says the charges were exaggerated. guilty or not, perhaps coal is so excitable because he has a lot of catching up to do. when palmer found him at the humane society of missouri in chesterfield, coal was near the end of a one-year recovery. “i also have a full-bred lab and i was taking him to the humane society because he had allergies; i kept seeing this black dog they were walking who had casts on all four of his legs,” she says. “they said he had been found on highway 40. someone had just left him on the highway, where a car hit him.” palmer asked to be called when coal was ready for adoption. “But after we had him for one week, he came barging down the steps and hit a glass platter,” she adds. the platter was shattered and coal was cut, severing his achilles tendon, which required surgery and eight more weeks of confinement. “he had one week of freedom and then he was back in the cage.” so now coal is making up for lost time, and he’s a great addition to the family, palmer says. her husband mark, and kids courtney, collin and corrinne, along with their lab, tex, have all taken to him. “the only thing i regret looking back is with the children, it would have been an asset to have a dog when they were younger. you can’t believe how attached you get to them.” To geT your very own fairy-Tail ending... ANy of you KNoW THAT I ENJoy A GooD READ—AND I fAll HooK, lINE AND SINKER foR a great ‘dog book.’ Here are some recommended reads for every dog owner, whether you’re looking for laughs, seeking solace, or just searching for reasons to love and appreciate your best friend even more.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle By David Wroblewski B ra ce yo u rse l f with this book, as it doesn’t follow the typical feel-good dog story. But if you truly understand and love dogs (or appreciate Shakespearean u n d e r to n e s i n a modern setting), there are plenty of moments in this book that will capture your heart. Edgar Sawtelle is the story of a mute boy who lives with his parents on an idyllic northern Wisconsin farm. The family raises and trains a breed of uber-dogs, and the boy—blessed with an uncanny ability to communicate with the animals—is poised to take over the reins. But the Sawtelles’ serene, bucolic household is shattered, forcing Edgar to flee into the wilderness accompanied by three of his trainees. David Wroblewski’s debut novel deserves all the praise it has earned, including a No. 1 ranking on The New York Times bestseller list and ‘Best Book of the year’ accolades from some of the country’s top newspapers. The best passages in the book involve Edgar’s interaction with his loyal companion, Almondine, which prompted the Chicago Tribune to declare, It is chiefly around (Almondine) that Wroblewski weaves some of the most moving prose about dogs ever committed to paper. I don’t think I can argue with that. One Good Dog By Susan Wilson I had my doubts about this book: It was an airport purchase—and you know how those usually go. I just wanted something to pass the time while waiting to board our flight to Curaçao, without really ‘getting into it’ too much, if you know what I mean. One Good Dog is about Adam March, a

businessman whose world is falling apart, and Chance, a pit bull mix who has known nothing but violence and fear. So much about not ‘getting into it.’ This book failed miserably on that end. Just read the prologue, and you’ll see what I mean. Don’t Dump the Dog By Randy Grim with Melinda Roth Stray Rescue’s Randy Grim has changed many l i ve s — o u rs included. Through the work of Grim and his team, we found Rowan, who currently is dog-in-charge at the Muyco-Tobin household. Borne out of years of rescuing abandoned animals, Grim addresses everything from run-ofthe-mill issues like potty-training to people who claim to be at their wits’ end and want to ‘return’ their dogs. using advice that’s “pithy, witty and ever-so-wise” as only Grim himself can deliver, he urges pet owners to employ love, understanding and patience when it comes to their dogs. The book is peppered with actual letters from people, including ‘Duh,’ who complains about his dog’s bark—not that the dog barks too much, but that the barks are too high-pitched and Duh was concerned that the barks would eventually hurt his ears and cause him to have a seizure. Duh ends his letter by saying, I will need to bring him back today. Please let me know what time I can drop him off. Grim’s response: Dear Duh, did you originally think dogs meowed? Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates By Gary Kunz We all want to believe that when a b e l o ve d p e t

passes, she makes her way to doggie heaven, where they offer unlimited walks to the park, peanut butter treats and belly rubs. In Cold Noses, animal lover Gary Kunz uses scripture to set out to prove that pets indeed go to heaven. The author, a retired Coast Guard officer, is a biblical scholar with a background in psychology. Regardless of whether I agreed with his logic, I found Kunz’s writing to be of great comfort in the weeks following the loss of our 14-year-old beagle, Corky Ann, in 2009. Kunz has an answer for everything, from griefrelated questions such as Should I have waited longer to put down my best friend? to Why does my dog eat grass? There’s even a 30-day devotional to help someone work through the grief of losing a pet, as well as ‘Stories of Humor’ to encourage readers to think and laugh about happier times. Marley & Me By John Grogan I t wo u l d b e a c r i m e n o t to include John Grogan’s account o f t h e l i fe a n d times of Marley, t h e l a b ra d o r retriever he calls “the world’s worst dog,” on this list. I f yo u t h o u g h t t h e m ov i e wa s good, the book is even better. It’s a must-read for anyone who is lucky enough to experience life with a canine companion. It’s my belief that journalists make some of the best storytellers around, and Grogan is a perfect example. The former Philadelphia Inquirer columnist is a master at making readers laugh, cry, and laugh some more. There’s an incident involving Marley jumping out of a moving vehicle. Shortly after reading this book, something similar happened to our puppy, Bauer, who Harry Houdini-ed himself out of his harness to run across a busy intersection. Well, I found out that it’s not as funny in real life, but I digress... Do you have a must-read book about dogs on your list? Elaine Medve, Prudential Select Properties it’s interesting when people move here from out of town and you tour them around the city. their reaction is always the same: Oh my gosh, you have such beautiful neighborhoods! we are very lucky that we have such wonderful neighborhoods. if you ask me where i do the most businesses in, i would say Clayton and ladue, but also kirkwood and webster groves. People today are looking for a residential area with wonderful schools and an urban feel. if you’re asking me where my favorite place to live is, i’m pretty crazy about Clayton—i’ve lived here for 35 years. Mary Beth Benes, Coldwell Banker Gundaker when you’re in Town & Country, you feel like people are always walking around. in the last year, they’ve installed these wonderful sidewalks where you can literally get from one side of town & Country to the other while being safe. it’s close to parks, and the schools are nice. there has been a lot of activity in town & Country, especially in the last 32

year. Even when the market was a little bit slower, town & Country stayed strong. Elizabeth St. Cin, Laura McCarthy Real Estate in Warson Woods, you’re walking distance from several parks, a neighborhood pool, tennis courts, grocery stores, coffee shops and restaurants. it’s a very walkable neighborhood. it’s for all ages, and i love that. there are lots of neighborhoods in st. louis that offer many of the same amenities; warson woods is my favorite out of all of the options. before we moved here, we moved 11 times in nine years; we’ve been here in warson woods for 31 years now. But the good news is that it’s never too late to improve the appearance and ambience of your home, whether it’s going on the market or not. We asked Sandra Long, principal of Sandra Long Interiors and an expert in home-staging, to give us the lowdown on getting a home up to snuff quickly and well. Her tips apply equally well to homes whose occupants are happily staying put. Why is staging important? When people walk into a clean, tidy, beautifully updated home with well-appointed furnishings, they’re open to imagining their lifestyle in that particular home. When a home is cluttered and untidy with outdated décor, it impairs people’s vision and shuts them off emotionally from trying to connect with it. Can staging make a home sell faster and command a higher price? Absolutely. Buyers are very savvy. Competition is keen, and buyers are looking for an instant fit. They expect a lot for their dollar. They’re looking for a home that represents their generation—not their parent’s generation— and staging, done well, achieves this. Give us an example. I was asked to stage the home of a young family who needed to downsize from their luxury, custom-built dream home. They had only lived in their home a short time and hadn’t finished furnishing it. The realtor knew that in a down market, the home would languish and the desired asking price would be nextto-impossible to achieve. My goal was to come in and give the home a well-designed, well-appointed look that suited a home of its stature. Highlighting the fantastic architecture was a must. The home received multiple contracts the first week it went on the market and sold for the asking price in 20 days. What mistakes do most people make when evaluating their home? Being shortsighted about the actual condition. Not looking at their competition. Not being able to detach themselves emotionally. Not using professionals. Overlooking the impact of curb appeal. What are your top tips for maximizing the attractiveness of a home, whether it’s for sale or not? De-clutter and organize all areas, including the garage. Clean every inch of the house. Freshen up with paint in keeping with today’s color trends. Replace worn-out carpeting and refinish badly worn hardwood flooring. Arrange furniture for good traffic flow thoughout the home.

The 168-foot passenger vessel made its official water debut in conjunction with the Statue of Liberty’s 125th anniversary.

The group of 17 designing women, which is nationally known for designing interiors for state-of-the-art yachts and other seaworthy vessels, has completed work on the new 600-passenger Hornblower Hybrid, which provides sightseeing and dinner cruises in the New York Harbor. The most ecologically innovative vessel in use on the East Coast, the Hybrid is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels and wind turbines. Directions in Designs’ clean, minimalist interior design also is green, incorporating recycled and reclaimed materials such as flooring sourced from post-consumer content; counter tops made from recycled glass; and aluminum wallcoverings that create a modern visual backdrop, while eliminating the need for wallpaper, glue or high volatile organic compound (VOC) paints. Natural light is the source of illumination during the day, while dramatically colored, energy-efficient LEDs provide lighting during evening cruises. Senior designer Mia Mandel, who has been with Directions in Design for 22 years, was the project manager. Jane Ganz is the owner of the firm.

Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis’s second ReStore celebrates its grand opening July 20 at 2117 Sams Drive in Des Peres. ReStore provides financial support for Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis through the sale of building supplies, home remodeling materials and home décor at discounted prices, providing a lower-cost alternative to a traditional hardware store. Inventory includes doors, windows, lighting and electrical, plumbing, lawn and garden, roofing, lumber, tools, hardware, tile and flooring, masonry, cabinets, appliances, furniture and home decor. ReStore also facilitates waste reduction by accepting donations of reusable materials. In 2012, ReStore diverted more than 93,000 pounds of building materials and other recyclables from donations, a waste diversion ratio of 87 percent. Key to that recycling effort is ReStore’s deconstruction service for homeowners and businesses planning a major remodel or demolition. A team of staff and volunteers is available to remove all reusable materials, such as appliances, plumbing fixtures,

copper pipe and hardwood flooring. Homeowners receive a donation receipt for materials, which are then sold at ReStore or recycled. Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis is a nonprofit working in partnership with individuals and communities to provide safe, decent and affordable housing in the St. Louis community. With more than 335 homes already built, Habitat is one of the leading housing developers in St. Louis. Each home buyer invests 350 hours of ‘sweat equity’ into their home and other projects. OVE OVER BIG SUR, FRENCH RIVIERA and other world-renowned scenic drives, and make room for one more: Canada’s Sea To Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler is breathtaking and gets you very close to heaven on earth. (One quick word of advice: Snow tires and chains are the law between November and April. So, summer is the perfect time to take this fantastic 75-mile drive and stay for a while.) Along the way, stop at the waterfront village of Horseshoe Bay; pan for gold at Brittania Mine Museum; view the thunderous Shannon Falls; picnic beneath the Brandywine Falls; and hike the Stawamus Chief near Squamish, the outdoor recreation capital of Canada. Exciting mountain adventures really kick in when you arrive at Whistler, a unique, vibrant, pedestrian-only village. Pack away your acrophobia (I did!) and hop on the ski lift for the exhilarating 20-minute ride to the top of Blackcomb Mountain. At 8,000 feet, it’s about 840 feet higher than Whistler Mountain next door. For the full test of your acrophobia (mine failed), take the PEAK 2 PEAK, joining the two mountains. At 1,427 feet above the valley floor, it’s the highest lift of its kind and the longest continuous lift system in the world, with unparalleled 360-degree views from the gondolas (so I’m told). Back on terra firma, you’ll want to try canoeing, kayaking, hiking and horseback-riding through old-growth cedar forests. Try biking at Whistler Mountain Bike Park, which has 47 or so trails for all skill levels; or summer-skiing and snowboarding in snow (yes, real, honest-to-goodness snow) on the glaciers at 7,600 feet. Whistler and its surrounding areas also are a top destination for golfers, so pack the irons and enjoy some of the most spectacular golf courses in the world. For the thrill-seekers, there’s zip-lining, white-water rafting, ice-climbing, paragliding, and the orthopedic surgeons’ favorite, rock-climbing. Whistler Village boasts a year-round population of about 10,000 and rises to 50,000 during peak times. It’s truly a rags-to-riches story along the West Coast, growing from an isolated wilderness to a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and co-host for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Black bears, marmots and other critters were the main occupants of this pristine land, along with the Indians. The name Whistler comes from the shrill whistling sound the western hoary marmots made to warn of predators. These days, the shrills come from the Family Adventure Zone, where children of all ages delight in pony rides, miniature golf, bumper cars, Kiss The Sky bungee trampoline and Amaze’n Maze. The Village also offers endless shopping and dining options, including Milestones for a marvelous prawn salad and Araxi for award-winning cuisine and wines. However, my all-time favorite has to be Mountain Top BBQ at the Roundhouse Lodge atop Whistler Mountain. We found much to like outside the Village, as well. Tucked away in the woods and alongside beautiful Green Lake is Edgewater Lodge, a charming and rustic lodge with rooms overlooking the

lake and mountain. Dinner there was a surprising culinary delight—both the delicacy of the meal and the thoughtful service—and highly recommended. Another find was Rimrock Café, for logcabin atmosphere with a sophisticated menu and highly touted wine cellar. Choices overwhelm for accommodations in the

Village, but we recommend The Fairmont Chateau Whistler. As we departed this summer wonderland— known and associated with winter-skiing—and headed south along the Sky to Sea Highway, we wondered, “When can we return, and who the heck needs snow?”

Their friends and publicists have taken to social media, posting multiple pictures of the twosome over the holiday weekend. It was inevitable. Baby-sitters get time and a half for holidays and late hours, so it was only a matter of time until Gomez caved.

THE ROYAL BABY As the world waits with bated breath for Kate to give birth to the first British royal of a new generation, reports are surfacing that the baby will be worth almost $400 million. The amount includes the child’s family income, as well as money from economic stimulus. Now, don’t let that amount intimidate you if you’re in the market. Four hundred million is just the asking price. I think with these royal babies, they expect you to haggle.

RYAN REYNOLDS AND BLAKE LIVELY Ryan Reynolds graced the cover of Details magazine this month and gave a revelatory interview about life with his new bride. The Van Wilder actor said that both he and Lively come from big families, and that they hope to have one of their own, as well. So, see? Something good did come from co-starring in the Green Lantern, after all—family time.

PARIS HILTON The heiress was snapped over the holiday weekend decked out in red, white and blue on the beach at her Malibu home. Hilton and friends posed in patriotic attire and flashed peace signs to the waiting paparazzi. That’s sweet—wholesome even. Too bad that method of garnering press attention didn’t occur to Hilton years ago…

ELL, WE ARE HALFWAY THROUGH the summer movie season and the news is not good. Critics and insiders are calling this the summer of the flop, and despite the obvious (Oblivion, After Earth, White House Down, The Lone Ranger) I wonder why that is. I mean, come on, crappy action movies have been as much a part of the summer fabric as baseball games and BBQs. Why suddenly are movie-goers voting with their wallets? Of course, there’s word of mouth—2013 word of mouth. My 14-year-old, Whiny, has 2,000 Facebook friends. When he says White House Down stinks, he’s not just commenting at the lunch table, he’s broadcasting. Early movie-goers are like cinematic first-responders—tweeting, posting and texting words of warning. Then there’s the obvious alternative: There are a jillion movie options for the so inclined. Why risk $10-plus on a questionable movie when there’s a sure thing available for almost nothing on cable, On Demand, Netflix and DVDs? It’s hard to shell out for After Earth when Argo is right there. Then, of course, there are the signs. It’s taken us a while, but movie-goers are starting to wise up. There are certain, shall we say, indications that a movie may not be all that is promised. With some help from the website, The Wrap, I’ve boiled it down. The glaring red flags are: The release date has moved: If a studio knows its movie is less than expected, it wants as little competition at the box office as possible and will move the opening to ensure that. Either

that, or the film has gone back for a re-edit, causing a delay. Either way, it is not good. There is very little advanced press: If the studio doesn’t screen the movie for critics or permit reviews to be published before the release, there’s trouble. Also, if the quote on the movie poster is from an obscure reviewer (‘A cinematic masterpiece’—Ralph Scrimshaw, The Greenberry Guardian), there’s trouble. The studio relies heavily on past successes: When there are references to other movies on the poster, consider yourself warned. From the studio that brought you Avatar, comes Hugh Jackman, star of The X-Men and Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe in the zaniest comedy about summer camp you’ll ever see. You get the idea. Corollary: The studio will throw in a heavyhitter who really had nothing to do with the film just to get his or her name tacked on. From the mind of James Cameron… The movie stars Adam Sandler or Katherine Heigl: OK, that was mean, but I paid to see Jack and Jill. If these two ever pair up for a film, look out. So there you have it. Hopefully, as the summer moseys along, things will get better. Maybe another Die Hard or Iron Man will appear late in the game. If not, well, there’s always Die Hard and Iron Man.

ILM CRITICS ARE CALLING THIS the ‘Summer of the Bomb.’ I’m not sure studios have ever had so many box office flops in one season. Audiences are telling Hollywood in no uncertain terms that it’s going to take more than an A-list star and a hundred-million-dollar budget to sell tickets. So, if Channing Tatum in a wife-beater or Johnny Depp in war paint doesn’t get you excited, I’m sorry to say I have good news and bad news on the home front. Here are some interesting rentals and some I wouldn’t watch if I were tied to the chair.

The Lone Ranger RUNAWAY TRAIN RATING: 5 out of 10

Every once in a while this happens in Hollywood: Somebody read the script, saw the talent attached and perused the budget. Somebody eyed the corner office at Disney. Somebody called the Lamborghini dealer and made an offer on a Malibu beach house. Somebody grinned greedily at the idea of this movie, thinking, This is my Avatar, my Pirates, my Marvel superhero movie. Somebody employed some faulty logic. Clearly, the formula Disney + Depp = dollars is not an immutable law of cinema. In layman’s terms, this movie stinks. The Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer) is a vigilante lawman, who, along with his faithful Indian sidekick, Tonto (Johnny Depp), rides through the Old West looking to bring the Cavendish gang to justice and avenge the death of the Ranger’s brother, Dan. There. That was simple enough. What about that could possibly cost $200 million? Hmmm. This movie is almost condescending in its lack of concern for logic, continuity and charm. Frankly, if it just had the third, I could even forgive the absence of the first two. It’s as if no one exercised any restraint at all—financially, theatrically or editorially. Imagine some very spoiled children left without a sitter…and $200 million. It’s not just that the movie is bad, it’s that the filmmakers are almost laughing about it, knowing we’ll pay to see it, anyway. Not this time.

Adventure Oz the Great and Powerful It’s hard to give a thumbs-up to a Wizard of Oz remake, but this effort is a charming, well-acted homage. Action Jack Reacher Tom Cruise is box-office repellent these days, but this thriller about a government agent going up against the bad guys to save the day—and the girl— is entertaining, if derivative. Comedy Warm Bodies Between this and Zombieland, I think zombie comedy may become a legitimate genre. This is another clever, funny—and yes, romantic—foray into the world of the un-dead. Suspense/ Horror Mama Now I can’t speak to this movie personally, but my friends who enjoy getting the muffins scared out of them insist that this is the movie to do it.

Romance Finding Nemo Fall in love with the animated classic again, or introduce your kids to it. And yes, technically it’s not a romance, per se; but considering my options, I’m going to need a little wiggle room here.

Adventure Jack the Giant Slayer and/or Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters I won’t go into detail. Suffice it to say, the fairy tale-as-feature-film craze is over. Action A Good Day to Die Hard Bruce Willis is too marketable to cling to this out-of-gas franchise. Comedy Admission Tina Fey and Paul Rudd: What could possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything. Suspense/ Horror The Host To describe an alien invasion movie as far-fetched may not be the most clarifying terminology. Just trust me on this one. Romance Safe Haven The only reason to watch this movie is if you want to test your gag reflex.

Q&A Always...STAGES with Jack Lane

ITH THE SOLD-OUT SUCCESS OF Always…Patsy Cline and a new rehearsal and administrative building, STAGES St. Louis has been thrust into the national spotlight. When LN recently caught up with executive producer Jack Lane, founder of the 27-year-old nonprofit theater company, he was gushing—for good reason—about the season’s overwhelming achievements and all the new initiatives in store for STAGES as it blossoms into its next 25 years. When your recent run of Always…Patsy Cline played to sellout crowds (even the additional performances sold out), what was your reaction? It was a runaway success that has really taken us by surprise. This is the first time in our history that we’ve ever had this kind of success. Patsy Cline has a voice and music that cuts through the generations. It has gone through the roof, and we had to turn away thousands of people. So much so that there is a possibility of moving it to a different theater space sometime in the future, maybe late fall or spring 2014. As Patsy lead actress (Jacqueline Petroccia) said, We have lightning in a bottle right now. What was it about the shows this season that made you choose to present them? The whole season truly is about empowered women: whether it’s the real-life Patsy Cline, the animated character Cinderella, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde or Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Against all odds, they made a good life and were not going to let things get in their way. Tell us more about your next show, Legally Blonde (July 19-Aug. 18). Legally Blonde is one of the most fun Broadway musicals in recent history—and it has a message for all people, not just women. This is a show where we needed triple threats—stars who can sing, dance and act. When Michelle London (starring as Elle Woods) walks in the room, she glows and she’s funny, and then she opens her mouth and starts singing. And then she also can act. St. Louis favorite Ben Nordstrom also will shine as the male lead, Emmett Forrest. Talk about why you brought back My Fair Lady (Sept. 6-Oct. 6). We did My Fair Lady about 15 years ago. And there’s nothing that should be changed about it—it is the perfect musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, it stands the test of time. It’s so much about an underdog, Eliza Doolittle (played by Pamela Brumley), a flower seller who teaches Professor Henry Higgins (Christopher Guilmet) about not judging. Guilmet returns to us after a heartbreakingly good performance in our production of Camelot several years ago. It was truly one of the best stage performances I’ve ever seen.

Describe your new building in Chesterfield that now houses your front offices and soon will be home to a multitude of new arts programs. It is a former synagogue in Chesterfield built in 2005 that we renovated. The 22,000-square-foot building has office space, a rehearsal stage and a lot of other spaces. It will be home to new programs, including American Musical Creative—new American musicals will be born there. This is taking STAGES into the next level. All of this is putting us on a national platform and securing STAGES into the future. Describe the STAGES show experience. The Robert G. Reim Theatre (377 seats in 11 rows) is the most intimate theater experience in St. Louis. With its continual rise of seats, the view of the stage is amazing. It’s a miniaturized Broadway house. What’s important when you go to the theater is to really experience the emotion of the

arts. You have real ownership when you attend a show at STAGES. The shows are literally in your lap, even from the 11th row. The energy from the actors and the audience feed off each other. It is electric. Take us behind the scenes at STAGES during the production process. Our shows are built from scratch, so our productions are exclusively built for our audiences. We have 150 staff members and there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work. What is in the works for the 2014 season? We are currently choosing the season for 2014. The success of Always… Patsy Cline is making us look at similar shows. Clearly, our audiences have been moved by the live music and the emotion of this show. Restaurant owners PAUL and WENDY HAMILTON have announced plans to have solar energy panels installed near their historic building at 2017 Chouteau Ave. in St. Louis. The 25-kilowatt photovoltaic system will be completed by September, and will be the first time an area restaurant has utilized the technology. The Hamiltons’ building houses Vin De Set, PW Pizza, Moulin Events and the Malt House Cellar event space. The solar carport canopy will be located on the east portion of the parking lot and will provide cover for a long row of vehicles. NE AREA OF ST. LOUIS that’s been seeing a real resurgence of its dining scene is Clayton. New and exciting eateries like 5 Star Burgers, Little Country Gentleman and Pastaria have been attracting diners like us by the score. The latest restaurant to add to this mini-renaissance is The Libertine. Occupying the space that most recently housed Chez Leon, The Libertine is run by Nick and Audra Luedde and chef Josh Galliano. It’s Galliano’s first ‘official’ restaurant since the closing of Monarch last year. We’re here to say it was more than worth the wait. The menu is broken down into the basics: Vegetable, Fish and Meat. But what Galliano and his talented kitchen do within these simple confines is a real testament to their skill and passion. First up was She-Crab Soup ($7), an absolutely gorgeous deep-orange broth surrounding three delicate blue crab spring rolls. It had a depth of flavor and a luscious consistency that we rarely experience with a soup. The Sunflower Seed Risotto ($16) was a perfect example of taking a simple dish and turning it into something that’s much more than the sum of its parts. To think that just sunflower could replicate the consistency of risotto with nary a grain of rice to be found was revelatory. The flavor was earthy and subtle, owing to a combo of spring onions, snow peas and a bit of charred onion oil; and it had a lovely, creamy consistency. The Crispy Octopus ($13) was coated with a batter reminiscent of the best fried chicken— crispy and peppery and very unexpected for those of us used to a heavy tempura-style batter on octopus dishes. It was served with a mild broccolistem kimchi that reinforces our belief that kimchi should be on every plate. The Three Little Birds ($18) featured a juicy cube comprised of layers of roasted game hen, chicken and quail served on a bed of rice grits that just may be the best grits we’ve had in this city— ultra-creamy with just the right balance of sweet and salt. To round things out, we tried The Libertine Candy Bar ($7), a hearty and decadent confection of salted caramel semifreddo, hazelnuts, ganache and chocolate dacquoise. It’s almost a disservice to place this in the realm of the common candy bar.

Beverage-wise, The Libertine also proved to be a cut above. There’s an extensive craft beer selection heavy on products from local breweries and a wine list that focuses on smaller producers who practice sustainable farming techniques. The bar program at Libertine is helmed by Nate Weber, who’s put together a creative and tasty collection of cocktails that start with the classics and then go their own way. Take the Elvis Costello Lost In Missouri ($10), a riff on the venerable Pimm’s Cup that combines Pimm’s No. 1, Pinkney Bend Gin, house-made ingredients like citrus soda and a mint tincture and ice rods of frozen cucumber juice. Needless to say, service was spot-on. It’s a great spot for everything from popping in for a quick drink or bite after work to celebrating a big event, or really any time superior food and drink is required. TOBACCO ONIONS Ingredients: 1 white onion, sliced into very thin rings 1 c flour 1/8 t salt 1/8 t black pepper ½ c vegetable oil Directions: Blend all dry ingredients together. Dredge onions through seasoned flour and pan-fry in hot vegetable oil. When brown, remove from oil and let dry on paper towels.

Q: My husband just loves meatloaf with mashed potatoes. He is always talking about how his mother would make it when he was a kid. I want to make it for him, but I am tired of being compared to his mother. Can you help me out? A: I, too, love meatloaf with mashed potatoes. And it does bring back many memories of being a kid

THE MEATLOAF Ingredients: 3 lb. ground sirloin 2 lb. ground pork 1 lb. ground veal 5 egg yolks ¼ c Dijon mustard 1 T salt 1 T ground oregano ½ medium onion, minced 8 cloves garlic, minced 1 c feta cheese 1 T ground sumac ¼ c sundried tomatoes, minced ¼ c whipped butter Directions: Sauté onion and garlic, and let cool to room temperature. Blend together with remaining

PLATING Place one meatloaf round topped with duchess potatoes on plate. Add two more plain meatloaf rounds and garnish the tops with the tobacco onions and steamed broccoli. Drizzle mushroom gravy to finish.

DUCHESS POTATOES Ingredients: 3 lbs. russet potatoes, peeled and boiled 3 egg yolks 1/8 c butter ¾ c heavy cream 1 t salt ½ t black pepper 1/8 t nutmeg Directions: After boiling potatoes, place them on a cookie sheet and dry by placing in a 350-degree oven for about 10 minutes to dry out the

Final Thoughts: Meatloaf has been around since the pre-Roman times and usually has some kind of bread crumbs in it. I prefer to leave out the bread crumbs and add in whipped butter, which helps keep it moist. I think all of us should share recipes and enjoy the diversity that they bring. The treated hairs will grow up out of skin and fall out in two to three weeks, leaving the area hair-free for two weeks. Then the next hair cycle begins to grow at week four to five.
