Now that we’ve entered the dog days of summer and are looking toward the back-to-school season, it can be easy to run yourself ragged. I invite you to see this edition of LN as a small reminder to be kind to yourself amid the busyness of the season.
For some folks, the disrupted routines of summertime pose a significant challenge to their mental health. While seasonal affective disorder is better known for rearing its head during winter, summertime SAD is all too real. Contributor Connie Mitchell shares some warning signs and best practices for those affected on p. 10.
If even the hottest days of the year can’t keep you inside, check out columnist Pat Raven’s top tips for staying cool when gardening or landscaping in the heat on p. 16. While you’re at it, get some garden inspo from associate editor Emily Standlee on p. 36, where she takes us along on the St. Louis Water Garden Society’s Pond-O-Rama tour.
The feel-good story of the week is on p. 12: Contributor Drew Gieseke speaks with 96-year-old St. Louisan Evelyn Kidd who had a dream come true when she took a ride in a Cessna aircraft last month.

TAKING Fli ght
Last month, 96-year-old Evelyn Kidd took to the sky.
A resident of Cedarhurst of Tesson Heights, Kidd embarked on a Cessna flight to fulfill a lifelong wish through the senior living facility’s Dream Come True program. The experience rekindled memories of her late husband, Gene, who as a pilot once guided their journeys above the clouds.
“The Cedarhurst Dream Come True program is gaining popularity within the company,” Cedarhurst assistant executive director Jeremy Crites says. “Dreams of all shapes and sizes are being realized by our seniors who are truly living every day to the fullest.”
Evelyn and Gene Kidd began flying in 1948. A Navy aircraft mechanic, Gene restored a wrecked airplane and soon obtained his pilot’s license; Evelyntoo learned to fly but never officially got her license. The two spent hours soaring through the skies together, igniting a shared passion that never diminished.
Fast forward nearly eight decades: Gene passed away in 2019 and Evelyn now lives at Cedarhurst, which offers a unique program that grants one resident per senior living community the chance to realize a lifelong wish.
“The program celebrates the enduring spirit and dreams of our senior community members,” says Cedarhurst corporate communications manager Ryan Davis.
After the living facility selected Kidd, its team reached out to Chesterfield-based Elite Aviation to inquire about making the dream into a reality. They settled on a date and time for the hour-long flight to take place at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport, also located in Chesterfield. Accompanied
[The flight] brought back beautiful memories of [my late husband] Gene and going on 'dawn patrols,' where you fly to different airports just to have breakfast. – EVElyN KIDD
by a fellow resident, Kidd rode in a Cessna, a small, general aviation aircraft first introduced in 1927 – and the same model she and Gene flew so many years ago.
“It brought back beautiful memories of Gene and going on ‘dawn patrols,’ where you fly to different airports just to have breakfast,” Kidd says.
Times change and so does technology. Cessna aircraft look a little different than the ones Gene and Evelyn flew way back when – they’re sleeker and more streamlined than the traditional model dotting the skies in the late
1940s. One thing that remains the same, though, is the feeling you get when you’re up in the air again, Kidd says. “It’s better than driving in a car – you save a lot of time!”
It’s been nearly 80 years since she first took flight with Gene. And while her husband may be gone, Kidd says that the best thing you can do to live out your dreams is to just keep moving, whether it be on the ground or in the sky.
“Stay busy!” she says. “Don’t sit around and do nothing.”

COOL Keep Your
By Pat Raven, Ph.D. and Julie Hess
After several years of gardening in incredibly hot Houston summers, I’ve developed a few techniques for maintaining your cool while attending to mid-season landscape chores. With our increasingly hot St. Louis dog days, it becomes harder to endure the swelter. Here are my tips and tricks for safer summer gardening:
Start early. The coolest part of the day is usually just before sunrise. If you are a morning person, take advantage of the tolerable temperatures. For us night owls, use a headlamp after dark.
Wear 100% cotton clothing, a bathing suit or a sun-proof shirt; then wet it all until dripping.
Make a headband with a pure cotton bandana or use a tennis sweatband to catch the drips from your brow.
Keep a dry towel handy and frequently wipe your hands to prevent slipping on tool grips.
Wear a Neck Buddy or Frogg Toggs towel to help with evaporative cooling. Before these newer devices were invented, I just ran a cord through the casing of an old cotton café curtain and wore it like a cape after soaking it in cold water. My neighbors considered me eccentric, but my garden won neighborhood awards.
Use plenty of sunscreen and wear a hat.
Invest in a lightweight portable shade device. It can be a pop-up or beach umbrella. Just move it around with you. In Texas, I taped an umbrella to my rolling trashcan and moved it along with me as I pinch-pruned and deadheaded.
Increase the amount of shade in your garden by planting more trees and hanging sun sails.
Add a breeze with a battery-operated table fan or wear a portable neck fan.
Invest in a misting fan that hooks to your

garden hose or string a mist line attached to the hose where you can walk under it frequently. Alternatively, re-wet your clothing in a regular oscillating sprinkler.
When it is brutally hot, I fill my pockets with ice packs.
Save all heavy work for fall. Other than dividing irises in August, most hard jobs can be saved for cooler weather.
Stay hydrated! Always keep water on hand.
Learn the warning signs of heat stroke and do not test your limits.
In addition to these tips, take frequent breaks to cool down. If you have a pool, use it! If not, get creative. I’ve used kiddie wading pools, large gardening buckets and even a horse trough filled with cold water as a plunge pool. Now, I use a 180-gallon oval Tuff Stuff stock tank with a brass drain fitting. Putting fresh, cold water in it every use and draining it after prevents mosquitos and accidental wildlife drownings. I adapted it with a faucet valve and hose so that I can water plants as it drains.

Musical MILESTONES
By Ashley Klein
It’s a big year for the St. Louis classical music scene. The Chamber Music Society of St. Louis is marking its 15th anniversary, and Leonard Slatkin, the former music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and a longstanding CMSSL collaborator, is celebrating his 80th birthday. These milestones won’t go unacknowledged. On Monday, Sept. 9, at The Sheldon, CMSSL will host its Vintage Gala, named in reverence to all things timeless. “Just like a vintage wine or a classic car, our gala tagline is: ‘Only the best things that last through time can be called vintage,’” says CMSSL board member and gala event chair Miran Halen. We spoke with Halen about celebrating these achievements and the upcoming gala.

OATS & HONEY CAFÉ
At Oats & Honey Café in Creve Coeur, visitors will find a one-of-a-kind Latin American-inspired breakfast experience. For starters, every meal begins with a complimentary fresh concha. The traditional Mexican sweetened bread roll, named for the seashell-like ridges made by its crunchy topping, is baked in-house every hour in small batches, setting the tone for a menu of brunch classics and unique fusion dishes.
The full-service daytime concept debuted in April and comes from husband-and-wife duo Gerardo Flores and Ericka Vega, along with business partner Jorge Maya. Together, the trio currently owns and operates four locations of Las Fuentes Mexican Restaurants in Florissant, Oakville, Arnold and Affton.
The team worked with chef José Antonio Ezquivel, who hails from Toluca, Mexico, to develop the extensive menu. “He worked with us on recipes and plates to create this new fusion,” Flores says. “I think St. Louis needs something different besides a traditional breakfast place. Benedicts we do with carnitas or birria, a combination you’ve never seen before.”
Vega is also excited to offer traditional dishes such as chilaquiles, a dish she says is typical breakfast fare in Mexico City, her hometown. “It’s our No. 1 seller so far,” Flores says. “It’s a mix of special salsa – green, red or both – on fried tortilla chips. And then we put eggs on top of, with grilled chicken or steak if you prefer it, [and with] sour cream, queso fresco, onions and cilantro.”
Ezquivel brings his specialties to the mix, such as a Toluca omelet filled with chorizo, onions, potatoes, diced carrots and cheese, topped with sour cream and green onions and served with black beans and tomatillo sauce. And, of course,
it wouldn’t be Oats & Honey Café without sweet options such as the house signature pancakes: three almond-flavored pancakes with oats, topped with housemade whipped cream, oatmeal praline and honey.
To drink, choose from fresh juices and specialty coffee drinks utilizing a special blend created for Oats & Honey by Dubuque Coffee Company. “We also have a traditional bakery where you get Mexican mornings with your coffee with pastries like concha,” Vega says.
“It’s about offering a different experience,” Flores says. “You come into our café, and we bring you fresh-baked bread and something nobody makes in St. Louis. For us, it’s about experience and hospitality. That’s our priority.”
Oats & Honey Café is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Towering Over St. Louis
Driving through St. Louis’ diverse neighborhoods feels like a journey through time, thanks to its abundant architectural charm. The city’s history is palpable: from the 1904 World’s Fair, with structures like the Palace of Fine Arts becoming the Saint Louis Art Museum, to the wealth of historical red brick buildings, a testament to the region’s rich clay deposits.
But things aren’t always as they seem in St. Louis. Consider, for instance, our three standpipe water towers, standing tall at 150-plus feet. These cylindrical structures are visible from nearby highways or through winter’s bare trees. The College Hill neighborhood is home to both the Grand Avenue and Bissell Street water towers; farther south, Compton Heights houses the Compton Hill Water Tower.
“The notable fact about St. Louis and its three towers is that, although hundreds of these standpipe water towers once existed all over the country, only seven remain standing today,” notes Cameron Collins, writer of the “Distilled History” blog and author of several books about St. Louis.
“St. Louis has three of them, with Milwaukee, New York, Chicago and Louisville rounding out the other four. St. Louis likes being a winner, and St. Louis won the water tower game.”
So, what purpose do these towers serve?
Although the Compton Hill Water Tower, found in the Compton Heights neighborhood, is currently closed to the public for maintenance, interested parties will hopefully be able to tour the structure again soon. According to the Water Tower & Park Preservation Society in St. Louis, the tower is “preserved as a mid-19th century engineering masterpiece” that was “designed as part of the city’s public water supply system.” It was also listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972. Unlike typical water towers, it doesn’t hold water but helps maintain water pressure, with its water constantly fluctuating to balance the city’s supply. Designed by renowned architect Harvey Ellis in 1897, the 179-foot-tall Compton Hill tower predates the World’s Fair.
In College Hill, the Grand Avenue Water Tower, a St. Louis landmark listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1970, rises 154 feet. Designed by St. Louis architect George I. Barnett in 1871, the tower resembles a Corinthian column with a carved cube-shaped top. The nearby White Tower, soaring above a Grand Avenue roundabout that once included a trolley, is another striking feature.
A few blocks away, the Bissell Street Water Tower, built in 1885 and designed by William S. Eames, stands 206 feet tall. Styled as a “Moorish Minaret,” this, the tallest of the towers, was nearly demolished in the 1950s but was saved by Donald Gunn, the former President of the Board of Aldermen. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the Bissell Street Tower has undergone several renovations and now features a lookout platform at the top, though it remains closed to the public.
It’s nice to know that both citizens and government officials rallied to save these magnificent towers from the wrecking ball. As a city, we can only hope they someday reopen to the public, allowing us to appreciate some of the country’s rarest structures right here in St. Louis.
