LESSONSLEARNED Transforming UMSL
TheUniversityofMissouri–St.Louisis makingsomemajorchanges.
Tocelebratethe60thanniversary ofitsfounding,theuniversityhas launched“TransformUMSL,”avast,$100million developmentprojectaimedatreimaginingthe studentandalumniexperiencesatUMSL.Above all,theprojectsunderTransformUMSLpromise toelevatetheuniversity’scommunity–andthe entireregion.
“We’recreatinganacademiccenter–a cohesiveacademiccenter–onournorthcampus,” UMSLChiefofStaffAdellaJonessays.“That meanswe’removingtheCollegeofEducation fromthesouthcampustothenorth.We’re alsomovingthemusicschoolandcreatingan academichubonthenorthcampus.”
TransformUMSListheproductoffindings fromamasterplancommissionedandcompleted in2021,whichassessedtheuniversity’s acreageandbuildingfootprint.
Fundingforthecollective projectscomescourtesyof theAmericanRescuePlan Act–whichprovided$40 millioninfederalfunds fromthestate’sbudget–andwillberoundedout withadditionalstateand donordollarsoverthenext severalyears.
Theprojectemploystwo strategicinitiatives:building theuniversity’sacademic communityanditsbusinessand workforcedistrict.Theformerincludes shiftingUMSL’sacademiccoretoitsnorth campusaswellasa“comprehensiverenovation ofclassroom,laboratoryandcommunityspaces.” ThelatterinvolvesworkingwithSt.Louis CountyandtheStateofMissouritodesignand createaNorthSt.LouisCountyBusinessand WorkforceDistrictthat’sanchoredontheUMSL southcampus.
“Ourcampusiskindofspreadout,”Jonessays. “Whenyou’reastudentvisitingtomakeyour
decisionaboutwhereyou wanttogo,youwanta campusthat’saccessible –whereyoucanwalkto whatyouneedandhavethe amenitiesthatyouneed.”
Oneoftheprimaryearly projectsunderTransformUMSL includesthenewRichterFamilyWelcome andAlumniCenter.The31,000-square-footfacility will“serveasthegatewaytoUMSL”forcurrent andprospectivestudentsandtheirfamilieswhile alsoestablishingahomebasefortheuniversity’s 112,000alumnimembers.Constructiononthe $16.5millionprojectbeganinJune2023andis expectedtobecompletedbymid-2025.
“Thatalumnicenterisverycriticalforusin thatouralumniareleadersintheworkforcein St.Louis,”Jonessays.
AnotherTransformUMSLprojectisthe upcomingrenovationofUniversityLibraries.The renovationwillincludenewstudyrooms,anopen, collaborativestudyspace,anewcafé,reading nooksandamoreopenfloorplanenvironment. Theprojectisexpectedtocost$12.1millionandis scheduledtobecompletedbytheendof2024.
Combined,thesechanges(andmanymore) showthepublicandprivatesector’scollective willingnesstoinvestinSt.Louis–andUMSL–asanimportantrecruitinggroundforthestate’s variousemployersandindustries.
“Inametropolitanuniversityspecifically,we’re closetotheeconomicengineofthestate,”Jones says.“It’seasiertofindpeopleinyourownbackyard, soyoukeepthatworkforcechurngoing.” ln

ByConnieMitchellGoingbacktoschoolisexciting,butit’s alsostressfulformanykids.Dr.Leticia Ugarte,aSLUCarechildandadolescent psychiatrist,saysshetendstohear moreconcernfromparentsasthenewschoolyear approachesandchildrenbegin tofeelmoreanxiousabout social,interpersonaland academicworries.
“There’snotone mostcommonthing youngpeopleworry about.Itcanbedreading beingbullied,nervesabout makingandmanagingnew friendships,changingroutines, transitioningtoanewschoolenvironmentor worriesabouthowhardaclasswillbe,”shesays. Thesestressorsmaymanifestasirritability, defiance,physicalcomplaintsorchangesin appetiteandsleeppatterns.
“Parentsshouldalwaysbesupportiveand listentotheirkids,butwhentheyseethemhaving
problemswithfunctioningatschoolorhome,it’s agoodideatoseekhelp,”sheadds,particularlyif concerningchangesinthechild’sbehaviorpersist evenafterparentsprovideongoingreassurance andsupport.Shenotesthatanyseriousmental healthconcerns,suchasself-harmorsuicidal ideation,shouldbeaddressedimmediately.
“Parentscanstartwiththeirpediatricianforany ongoinggeneralconcernsandreceiveareferral formorespecializedmentalhealthcareifneeded,” shesays.“Anyseriousconcerns,liketalkofsuicide, raisethebarandcouldevenpromptavisittothe ERifthereisathreatofself-harm.”
Ugartenotesthatstudentsandparentsshould rememberthatit’snormaltoexperiencesome levelofstressfromchangesinroutineandlife transitions,likechangingschools,andthereare practicesthatcanhelp.Forinstance,breathing exerciseshelpstimulatetheparasympathetic nervoussystem–thebody’s“restanddigest” systemthatcounteractsthe“fightorflight” stressresponse.
Asimplebreathingtechniqueinvolvescounting tofivewhileinhaling,holdingthebreath,andthen exhaling.Childrencanpracticeasimilartechnique
byinhalingtothecountoffive,holdingitbriefly andthenexhalingthesamewaytheywouldblow outacandleorabubble.Parentspracticingwith theirkidsmayfindthatthesesimpleexerciseshelp calmtheiranxiety,too.
Maintainingregularphysicalactivity,like swimmingorrunning,andpracticingthesleep scheduleandroutineoftheschoolyearbeforeit actuallybeginscanbehelpful,too.“Visitingthe schoolbuilding,evenifyoucan’tgoinside,to becomefamiliarwithitcanhelpthetransitionfeel lessscary,”Ugartesays.
“Don’tavoidtalkingtoyourkidsabout whattheschoolyearwillbelike,”shesays.“Be reassuringandvalidatingwhentheyexpresstheir fearsorworries.Talkabouttheirgoalsandhow you’llbetheretosupportthemwhethertheyget straightA’sornot.Anddon’tstopdoingfunfamily activitiesafterschoolstarts,likegoingonpicnics orhikesonweekendsorhavingapizzanight duringtheweek.”

AccordingtotheMissouriDepartmentofNatural Resources,ozoneseasonoccursfromMarch1to toOct.31everyyear,meaningthehighlyreactivegas(O3, whichconsistsofthreeoxygenatoms)ismoreprevalentat groundlevelduetoheatandsunlight.Thisyear,Canadian wildfiresaddedsmokyparticulatestoozone-smoggyair andheightenedtheriskofrespiratoryproblems,especially forvulnerablepopulations.
“TheAirQualityIndex,usedtoestimateriskforadverse healtheffectsfromairpollution,canbeincreasedfromozone, nitrogendioxideandfineparticulatessuchaswildfiresmoke,” saysDr.MarkDykewicz,theRaymondandAlbertaSlavinEndowed ProfessorinAllergyandImmunologyatSaintLouisUniversity SchoolofMedicine.“Whilelargerparticulatesdepositinthe airways,includingthelungs,andcauserespiratoryproblems,fine particulatescanpenetratefurtherintothelungsandenterthe bloodstreamtocauseadversehealtheffects.”
Inadditiontocausingphlegm,runnynose,shortnessofbreath, severecoughandirritationofthenose,throatandeyes,acute airpollutioncancausedizziness,headachesandevenirregular heartbeat,strokeandheartattacks,Dykewiczsays.Groups moresensitivetoairpollutionincludepeoplewithlungorheart conditions,seniors,pregnantwomen,infantsandyoungchildren andthosewhosmoketobacco.
Sensitivegroupscanbeaffectedmorequicklyandbylower levelsofairpollution,butthesepotentialhealthissuescanaffect anyone.It’sagoodideatocheckthestate’sairqualitywebsite beforeheadingintothegreatoutdoorsforextendedperiodsof time.Thesitealsooffersalinktosignupforozonealerts.
Totrackwildfiresandpollutioncausedbydriftingsmoke, severalgovernmentalagenciespartneredtocreateAirNow,a nationalinformationresource.Canadianwildfiresmokehas cleared,butCanadiannewsservicesreporttherecord-breaking wildfireseasonispredictedtocontinueintoAugust.Asinthe AmericanWest,Canadianwildfiresresultfromhightemperatures anddryconditions.TheNationalInteragencyFireCenter, headquarteredinBoise,Idaho,predictsabove-normalfire potentialfortheupperMidwestandNorthwestthroughAugust.
Breathingeasyduringozoneandwildfiresmokeseasoninvolves somebasicprevention,Dykewiczsays.“Whenairqualityispoor, ifpossibleminimizetheamountoftimethatyouspendoutdoors, avoidperformingmorevigorousexerciseoutsideandinstead exerciseindoorsinbuildingsthathavefiltered,air-conditioned air.HEPAairfiltersarespecificallydesignedtoreduceparticlesin indoorair.”Thestatewebsiteandsomeweatherreportsandapps offerreal-timeairqualitydatasouserscancheckthroughoutthe dayandfindpocketsoftimewithbetterairqualityfornecessary outdooractivities.
