When you were a teen, what was your favorite athletic activity (see p. 70)? ALICE HANDELMAN My favorite activity was fishing with my dad and sister on the Tamiami Canal using our bamboo-cane fishing poles. We proved that you don’t need high-end fishing rod-andreel setups to have fun and productive fishing days.

JANIS MURRAY I was a serious ballet and jazz dancer. Absolutely loved it four days a week after school plus Saturday mornings. Then figure-skating practice filled weekend afternoons. I still dance today for fitness.

DR. BENJAMIN OLA. AKANDE My favorite sport as a young man growing up in Nigeria was playing table tennis (Ping-Pong).

from the

Editor With everything happening in today’s world, sometimes it’s necessary to unplug and seek a momentary escape. Although the majority of folks can’t simply drop everything and flee to the mountains or the beach at a moment’s notice, most of us do have our go-to spot for serenity. For me, 15 minutes with a book, swaying in the hammock beneath the trees in our backyard, make the stresses of the day melt away. Bauer Falls, though, is taking backyard serenity to a whole new level. In this week’s Abode section, writer Kristie McClanahan shares the story of that, a familyowned business, which specializes in creating breathtaking waterfalls. “I just plagiarize nature, constantly,” jokes co-owner Caleb Bauer, in the feature starting on p. 35. We hope this story not only shares the passion and personality driving Bauer Falls, but also inspires you to take time for yourself to relax and enjoy the natural beauty in your own backyard. All the best,

CHARLES D’ANGELO

Dan Farner, in April 2015, at almost 370 pounds. After suffering a heart attack, he sought D’Angelo’s coaching.

hange may be an inevitable factor of life, but making progress isn’t. Want to feel as victorious as rocky Balboa when he ran up the Philadelphia Museum of art steps in rocky? It’s not about finding the right program to get your life on track. It’s about finding the right person to help you stay true to being your best self. Charles D’angelo proves he is just the man to help you discover your a-game. Dan Farner knows the difference D’angelo can make firsthand. “In the past, I’ve worked with people who have encouraged me all along the way,” he says. “Working with Charles, though, I hired someone who would be boldly honest and hold me accountable in an incredibly serious way. he is a true coach who makes sure I follow through.” Farner began his weight-loss journey at 365 pounds last september. he struggled for years to shed the weight and keep it off. after suffering a heart attack, becoming healthy for his family became top priority. Farner had to learn to be consistent in doing the things he knew he should have done all along. “I had to [realign my focus] and get my head right. this is my challenge; not my family’s, necessarily. Charles taught me that I have to confront this challenge myself and not use them as an excuse, but as a reason to succeed,” he says. after watching a friend’s son succeed at getting to and maintaining a healthy weight, Farner took the initiative and sought out the transformation coach that helped the young man get to his goal. Under D’angelo’s instruction, Farner went from 365 pounds to 228 in eight months. “It’s amazing the transformation that has taken place. My friend and his son led me to Charles, but I never would’ve dreamed it would happen like this,” he says. “I knew I had to do something to get healthy. In past attempts, I always felt like I was sacrificing. Charles offers life balance.” Farner’s son also felt inspired and began utilizing the D’angelo approach on January 6 of this year. “he has lost 65 pounds, going from 255 to 190,” his father proudly shares. “totally changed his life. he is going into senior year a confident and happy young man.”

I believe impossible is an opinion. I’m helping people realign with their God-given life purpose. 12

the transformation expert creates that balance by teaching his clients a life-changing philosophy. “eliminating limiting beliefs [can be the biggest obstacle] – that’s the thing that stops most people. I help them develop a plan they can integrate into their daily lives,” D’angelo says. “I tell them that, if you do what’s easiest and familiar now, it will make life more challenging. If you do what’s challenging now, life will get easier and easier.” Madeline Bathe also came to D’angelo after seeing a friend’s success with the help of the celebrity coach. “I was an athlete in high school and ate whatever I wanted without gaining. I gained weight in college [and had] been overweight for four years [prior to meeting Charles],” she says. at the age of 22, Bathe simply wanted to enjoy going out with friends and feel confident at summer weddings. “there are choices out there, like Mexican food and margaritas, which aren’t very healthy [if enjoyed too often]. My plan required [abstaining from] alcohol. It was difficult, but worth it, for sure,” she says. she dropped 80 pounds and is now back to her high school weight. “Charles is very motivating. he got me moving in the beginning, but now that I’ve lost [the weight] and see I can do it, I’m motivating myself. Do what he tells you. stick to it, stay motivated, and you’ll lose the weight,” she promises. D’angelo thrives on empowering his clients, since he once was obese and in the very place many of his clients have found themselves. he teaches them about far more than simply how to lose weight. “I believe impossible is an opinion,” D’angelo says. “I’m helping people realign with their god-given purpose.” Visit charlesdangelo.com for more and to schedule a free coaching consultation, or call 314-495-3228.

or 10 years now, College Bound has been providing promising students from underresourced backgrounds with the academic enrichment, social support and life skills needed to succeed in college and careers. This year’s 10th anniversary Cap and Gown Ball held at Union Station signified how much the organization has grown during the last decade. Among College Bound students, 100 percent graduated from college, and 93 percent went there immediately after high school. I’ve never been able to put into words how impactful my work with College Bound is. Every year, I work with the senior high school students and help them with their essay process, and each year, I think nothing they tell me can surprise me. Every year, I am blown away yet again by the circumstances that these students come from and the things that they’ve overcome, their determination and their will to succeed and to break the cycle. As a result, I keep coming back, because it is the most powerful transformative experience I’ve ever had as a volunteer. CAROL COHEN, LONG-TIME VOLUNTEER

hakespeare devotees took trolleys to the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park for this year’s Party on Art Hill to benefit Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. After being greeted by Shakespearean performers, guests had cocktails on the pavilion’s patio before enjoying dinner and remarks. Wine and delights from Piccione Pastry then accompanied guests as they took trolleys back to reserved seats at the performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Proceeds from the event benefit the festival’s programs in schools, on the street and at the park. Greg and Pam Trapp

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis does some amazing outreach to the community, and their community engagement is what keeps me wanting to [take part in] the company and work with the company. Doing the Old North project in 2015 was probably one of the most important things I’ve done in my life to celebrate that community, and [to] hear these stories and be able to put it in a theatrical light was amazing. And so any time I can do that, any time I can bring any type of unity through the arts in the city, that’s what I live for – so it’s always a pleasure to work with them.

MISSION

Saint Louis Crisis Nursery makes children’s safety top priority by protecting them from abuse and providing a safe haven. “Our mission is to save babies and keep kids safe by building strong families. We do that by providing safe care for children 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” CEO DiAnne Mueller says. The Crisis Nursery takes this goal incredibly seriously by providing services and supplies to families in crisis while making sure each family stays fiscally sustainable.

HISTORY

COMMUNITY IMPACT

“The Crisis Nursery has been here for more than 30 years. We have a great reputation, and we’ve worked really hard to be well known in our community where families need us the most,” Mueller says. In 1983, Junior League of St. Louis launched a research committee to address prevalent needs for victims of child abuse. The development of a crisis nursery began in 1985, and soon, educational resources were provided to create programs for children, training for staff and a referral system for families.

Crisis Nursery has expanded to several areas throughout the region, making help available to more families. “I’m so proud of how much we’ve grown. The nursery started with just one location, and today, we now have five area locations, including in St. Charles and Wentzville,” Mueller boasts. “We also have seven communityoutreach centers that [conduct our] follow-up program.” Once children leave Crisis Nursery and return home, the outreach centers provide additional assistance and monitor the children’s safety. “It [all] starts with our board of directors and health care systems who are involved with helping the Crisis Nursery,” Mueller claims. “We also have an advisory board, young-professionals board, parent-advisory board and junior-advisory board. In addition to that, we have more than 300 volunteers and a professional staff of more than 100. All of these folks come together to accomplish our very important mission of saving lives.” To further its mission, Crisis Nursery is hosting its annual

Celebrity Waiters Night. “We pretty much put everything fun we could think of into this event,” Mueller says. “We want to be inclusive, so there’s no ticket price. We want the whole community to come out. Some people may just come to listen to the music or have a cocktail and appetizers – or they can make a [dinner] reservation.” The celebrity waiters will hand out red envelopes for donations, all of which will go to the Crisis Nursery. Local celebrities include talents from both television and radio. “Our returning celebrity of the year, the managing director of Wells Fargo, Chip Walker, will be there,” Mueller adds. “For the last several years, he has helped us raise more money than any other celebrity.” Attendees also can expect a musical performance by The Ralph Butler Band, with a guest appearance by Elvis, as well as a silent auction and raffle. Auction items include a pink Kate Spade bag and many more covetable pieces provided from stores within West County Center.

ON THE BOARD: STEPHANIE HALL “Every child deserves to grow up in a safe environment. They deserve to grow up healthy, strong, innocent and free from physical and emotional abuse,” Stephanie Hall, VP of human resources at Centene, says. “Helping families in our local community is what Crisis Nursery is all about.” She serves as chair on its board of directors and is more than happy to contribute to such a worthy cause. “I was really fortunate to come to Crisis Nursery. The Nursery actually reached out to Centene and asked for somebody to support them. The work of the Nursery aligns with Centene’s mission statement, and so, our CEO nominated myself,” Hall says. She looks forward to teaming with the community at the upcoming Celebrity Waiters Night. “This is an opportunity to learn about the [good work of] the Nursery from local celebrities. We have more than 50 local celebrities attending the event,” she offers. “It’s a fabulous way to enjoy a great meal from some amazing restaurants, and spend a great night with family and friends. And it’s all for a great cause.” Hall constantly is impressed by the difference the Crisis Nursery makes in the lives of children and holds no illusions as to how that work is accomplished. “The Crisis Nursery staff is [composed of] amazing individuals. We are celebrating a milestone anniversary, and we certainly wouldn’t be here without them,” she remarks.

DREAMY DRESSING ROOM

A

By Sarah Kloepple

my Studebaker of Amy Studebaker Design was referred to this client and her home in Ladue. The client wanted a large space to accommodate all of her clothing and accessories – including items off-season. The space was remodeled so the client could enter the room through the bathroom rather than the master suite. “We wanted it to really have a dressing room feel instead of a closet,” Studebaker says. The open shelving and vaulted ceiling adorned with a chandelier give the space a glamorous touch. Studebaker says the client wanted the trim, ceiling and walls to be the same color. They selected a soft gray-blue to unify the room. The two chairs at the heart of the room were reupholstered with white linen and slipcovers made with small pleated ruffles and tie-down legs. “Almost like a ballerina tie,” Studebaker says of the slipcovers, “just to give it a more feminine quality.” Soft gold accents were added to the cabinets and drawers. The drapes, Studebaker says, are a darker print that makes a bold statement from the creamy background. Overall, the client and Studebaker worked together to create an open and elegant dressing room. “We had such a good-sized space to work with that we really could do what we wanted to do,” Studebaker says.

Bauer Falls creates backyard oases with its hand-picked, natural waterfalls made from local sandstone and limestone.

P

lenty of people point to a mission statement or bedrock philosophy as the foundation of their business. For Bauer Falls, that bedrock’s literal. “I just plagiarize nature, constantly,” says Caleb Bauer, laughing. “That’s all I do! I didn’t come up with this stuff.” He points to a rock in his backyard. “Nature carved that. It looks like roses are carved into it. That’s just nature over a couple million years. It used to be an ancient seabed, and now it’s sitting in my yard.” The fifth of eight homeschooled children, Bauer was raised in Troy, Missouri, right next to 7,000-acre Cuivre River State Park. Growing up without a television, Bauer and his siblings spent their free time gardening, hiking Frenchman’s Bluff and building rock forts and teepees. Now 33, Bauer, along with his brother Josh, co-owns Bauer Falls, a West County-based company that creates nature-inspired waterfalls, walkways and patios. But for the transplant who now calls Creve Coeur home, the woods – and clandestine hiding spots – are never far behind. “We need forts as adults,” he says. “What are we working so hard for if not to relax in our fort and enjoy life?” Bauer’s own backyard looks cozy and dreamlike, framed as it is by a thick tangle of honeysuckle vines, clematis, spindly ferns, a few well-placed trees and, finally, the centerpiece: a waterfall that skates over mossy gray and green rocks before emptying into a 3-foot-deep koi pond (population: 10), its surface dappled with lily pads. You’d never guess that Highway 141 runs 250 feet away – or that his next-door neighbor is even closer, at about 6 feet. Bauer himself seems as ebullient and inviting as his waterfalls, and nature remains at the heart of everything he does.

36   July july 22, 2016 | LadueNews.com 2016 | LadueNews.com

“I would preach these waterfalls even if I didn’t make a dime off of [the business],” he says, “because, honestly, they’re that awesome. It has nothing to do with money for me. We love building waterfalls, and more importantly, we love spreading the joy of the woods.” Before each project begins, Josh Bauer meets with prospective clients to check out their space, share ideas and discuss a budget. Next, the brothers come up with a general plan and a bid before heading to Perryville’s Semco Stone, which collects weathered sandstone and limestone from sites in southern Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois. The brothers then handpick each stone. “It’s been sitting out in nature, baked by the sun, so it’s already got mosses and lichens growing on it,” Bauer says. “Some of them already have cracks in them, worn by the water, because they might have been sitting there for centuries before they got picked up. What we’re going for in our business is natural, natural, natural.” Including the two brothers, Bauer Falls consists of just three other waterfall artists, all involved in different parts of the construction process for almost every project. Bauer estimates that the company has completed 115 projects throughout its seven-year history. Although the company’s waterfalls average 3 to 5 feet wide and 5 feet tall, its biggest one to date (located in Millstadt, Illinois) gushes 50,000 gallons of water per hour, boasts a 300-foot-long stream and has 15-foot-wide falls and a stone walkway that stretches nearly a third of a mile. All told, it took a year to construct – although most of the company’s projects are finished in two or three weeks. Bauer Falls’ creations are undeniably intricate, but incorporate a free-flowing undercurrent that comes from letting nature – and each project – take its own course. Bauer doesn’t plan where each stone will be laid ahead of

time; instead, he sets them down one by one, and they seem to lock themselves into place. The cool, crisp water seemingly springs from the rocks themselves. It tumbles down their craggy sides and nurtures the plants around them: Hostas, daylilies, water iris and elephant ears are among the most popular choices. And each element plays a part in the waterfall’s perfectly functioning ecosystem: The pond’s small creatures and beneficial bacteria decompose fish waste, and then plants break down the bacteria’s waste, resulting in clear, healthy water that in turn sustains the fish. That cycle continues all year. Waterfalls burst with life in the spring; in summer, they’re lush as jungles; and come fall, the leaves become a riot of orange and red. And because flowing water doesn’t easily freeze, winter brings a beauty all its own, when the falls become an irresistible magnet for birds. Better still, maintenance remains simple. “It’s less weeding than a normal flower bed, and it’s about 10 times the pleasure,” Bauer says. One client swears fishing algae out of the pond serves as a substitute for therapy. People often tell Bauer that having a waterfall resembles being on vacation every day. He suspects the desire to be near running water stems from something primal. “It’s in our human evolution to be standing next to an oxygen-rich place,” Bauer says. “I think that’s the feeling that it replicates, and it’s so much bigger than our company. Each person who has an oasis in their backyard understands what that means, to have that feeling. “We live in a stress-filled world,” he continues. “There’s no time to relax. You can’t help but relax when you get next to something like this.” Bauer Falls, 314-974-1360, saintlouiswaterfalls.com

t Laura McCarthy Real Estate, staying at the forefront of technology and customer satisfaction is a priority. Kathy Beilein, president of the company, says Laura McCarthy can provide the best customer service by employing agents who are full-time, knowledgeable and responsive to clients’ needs. “Our agents are truly interested in giving the best customer service,” she says. “It’s not just something we say. We work that way.” At Laura McCarthy, agents focus on giving the client up-to-the-minute resources in every aspect of buying or selling a home, whether it’s marketing or decorating trends. Beilein says 2016 has been a good year for real estate and calls the market solid. The year started off slowly, but interest rates are at “extremely low levels.” “We have a healthy supply of homes,” she says. “Supply is catching up with demand.” St. Louis attracts people for a variety of reasons. Along with the affordability of the city, the community offers both historic and new architecture, drawing in a wide variety of people. “People are very interested in neighborhoods and areas that are ‘walkable,’” Beilein says. “Areas like Forest Park, Citygarden and Tower Grove help us maintain our standings in the country.” To help draw in potential St. Louis homebuyers and sellers, Laura McCarthy has completely revamped its website, making it easier than ever to get started buying or selling your home. “For real estate companies, the website is really the center and hub of your online universe,” Beilein notes. “Conceptually, our new site is aligned with our

A search bar allows site visitors to browse homes by city, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms and price range. “We went through and tried to keep it as easy as possible to get property information and do a complete and thorough search in the local market,” Beilein explains. T

By Amanda Dahl

wo decades ago, Brian Sluka was preparing for medical school when fate struck in the form of a friend suggesting they start flipping houses together. “It was totally trial-and-error at first,” Sluka says. But that trial-and-error opened his eyes to his true passion, real estate. Today, after two decades in the industry, Sluka understands what it takes to succeed. Valuing honesty, passion and humility in his field, Sluka has learned that being inauthentic, either in life or in business, can truly harm your success. “Don’t try to copy other people,” he says. “Be the eccentric, unique and slightly crazy you that your family, friends and clients will gravitate toward and trust.” Sluka derives satisfaction by steadily evolving alongside the industry. Innovation has proven a necessary skill set, and Sluka delivers in spades. “Don’t just think outside the box. Throw the box away,” he shares. “Every single deal is different, and I feel there isn’t a deal I can’t put together. It’s

all about the challenge. I love the excitement, the market, technology and people that are constantly changing. I try to surround myself with the best, most highly talented people and to perform at my highest possible levels, while transmitting my passion to everyone.” His flexibility and authenticity have made Sluka an invaluable new member of the Dielmann Sotheby’s team. “As long as real estate keeps teaching me, allows me to inspire and make people happy, I’ll continue to do it,” he says.

ummer in St. Louis means one undeniable thing: It’s going to be hot. Being in a sweat-inducing zone doesn’t mean you have to look or smell like a hot mess, though. Make the most of summertime, from outdoor sports to time at the lake, with these unbeatable sweat-resistant products. 1. Up your daily smell-good routine with a deodorant that mirrors the fragrance of a cologne. Try HM by Hanae Mori, with its sea-fresh scent of spearmint and citrus, or Carven Pour Homme, featuring a woodsy scent spiked with spices. When the temperatures start rising, so will the strength of your magnetic aroma. HM by Hanae Mori available for $21 at Hanae Mori (hanaemoriparfums.com); Carven Pour Homme available for $30 at Saks Fifth Avenue (saksfifthavenue.com) 2. After hours spent outdoors, such as at a rock concert or for an intense workout, clean up with a quick swipe of Ole Henriksen’s Grease Relief Cleansing Cloths. The oil-free textured cloths refresh and renew skin in one step. A dry towel has nothing on these bad boys. Available for $15 at Sephora (sephora.com) 3. Moisture in the air is no joke in Missouri. Keep the moisture off your lower region with No Sweat Body Defense by Anthony. Top-rated by GQ magazine, it creates a powderlike barrier using tapioca starch to protect sensitive areas from chafing. Plus, ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E paired with a citrus scent

keep you feeling fresh, no matter the humidity level. Available for $20 at Nordstrom (nordstrom.com) and ULTA Beauty (ulta.com) 4. Of course you can thank the sun for the unrelenting heat this summer, but don’t forget to protect your skin from its strong rays, too. Ole Henriksen’s Protect the Truth Sunscreen easily protects from both UVA and UVB rays with SPF 50. The oil-free application is anti-grease, ensuring you continue to look cool and feel confident about skin protection. Apply before you head out, and reapply as necessary. Available for $35 at Sephora

HEAVY METAL: Feature Story

Mixing genovese jewelers

it up

A

By Robyn Dexter Photos by Sarah Conard

t Genovese Jewelers, it’s all about mixing it up. Sales associate Elizabeth Eby says “yellow and rose gold have been increasing in demand in recent years” as opposed to just typical white gold. “People are getting into diamond pieces with yellow and rose gold.” Eby says “they are not afraid to throw it in (with other metals). Mixing and matching old with new is incredibly popular.” Eby says it’s easy to add a band or a right-hand ring with a different metal from what you already have to add a pop of color. She says yellow gold fashion jewelry has been growing in popularity as well. Genovese carries cuffs with brushed rose and yellow gold, which Eby says adds a rich look to a person’s jewelry. “Everyone wants something that’s wearable for every day, in addition to their jewelry that’s dressier. You want it to be interchangeable easily,” she says. “Fashion is changing so much that people want to make sure they have everything they need [in terms of jewelry].” Eby says the nice thing about Genovese is that if a customer comes in and falls in love with a piece that’s white gold, but they’re looking for yellow gold, Genovese can make it in yellow, too. “You can’t do that anywhere else,” she says. “We have a little bit of everything here.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

Consequences of Brexit

By Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande

‌S

ome decisions seem almost destined for good outcomes – say, big investments in public education and infrastructure like roads and bridges, jobs and access to higher education. Other decisions seem valid only at a given time; for example, invading Vietnam to forestall a domino-effect collapse of small, fledgling nations into communism seemed a good idea at the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. Congruently, NAFTA seemed brilliant when passed in 1994, and it may well still be – but a growing school of thought holds that this nation’s working class took a beating as a result of that trade agreement. This brings us to Brexit. The June 23 vote by citizens of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union constitutes another example of a decision that could have wide-ranging unforeseen consequences. In the immediate wake of that vote, all the major stock exchange indices (including those in Germany, France and Italy, as well as here in the United States) dropped precipitously, and the British pound fell sharply. Senior executives of Italy’s leading banks stated they may need a €40 billion bailout because of the large amount of business they do in the U.K. Moreover, experts have projected that exports from the Netherlands and Luxembourg to the U.K. will drop significantly. Talk also has swirled about major financial institutions moving tens of thousands of employees out of London, eroding that city’s status as the world’s financial center. Several political repercussions also have taken place. Boris Johnson, the pugnacious former mayor of London who helped lead the Brexit fight, decided not to seek the position of prime minister because of his part in the fight. Scotland, long a staunch supporter of the EU, is considering holding another referendum on whether to remain in the U.K. Northern Ireland – the U.K.’s smallest country and one with a long history of sectarian violence – may consider exiting the U.K. as well. The preceding constitutes but a snapshot of the realities of Brexit, highlighting a broader issue: Actions, no matter how well thought out, often incur unintended and dire consequences. Another lesson exists: Emotion should be tempered by logic. Much of the Brexit campaign focused on the emotional appeal of a powerful, “independent” and relatively homogenous Britain unshackled from obligations to a wider international organization. Very little of that campaign focused on the consequences for the U.K., Europe and the rest of the world. It still remains too early to say with certainty, but a strong possibility exists that from a leadership perspective, this may not have been Britain’s finest hour.

Never ‘Phone in’ a Phone Interview

By Janis Murray

T

his summer, one of my clients faced four phone interviews with executives in Dallas and Chicago in the space of as many days, reflecting the fact that cost-conscious companies today fly in only finalists for open positions. The phone interview, as a result, has become an important filter. A traditional phone interview, it almost goes without saying, differs completely from a face-to-face opportunity because the interviewer can’t see the interviewee. For your own phone interview, choose a quiet space, free of noisy children or TV audio, preferably with a door that doesn’t admit outside clamor to distract you or your interviewer. Also, choose attire that makes you feel professional. An example here should be valuable. One of my clients recorded his own phone interview, both audio and video, for my subsequent review. In it, he was sitting in swim trunks in front of an open window on a beautiful, sunny day. Distractions abounded – and his answers reflected that. A later interview for this client showed improvement when he wore a suit and closed the curtains. If you already have a job but are secretly job-hunting, schedule interviews during early or late lunches. Also, take technological matters into consideration. One successful client, for instance, took the precaution of scouting out areas with good cellphone reception in advance. Similarly, I suggest never doing an interview on speakerphone, if only to avoid echoes; using the phone takes just one hand, after all. For your nonphone hand, have a notebook handy for jotted details (in addition to your résumé for reference). Immediately write down the name of the interviewer so you can refer to him or her by name. Also, if asked multiple questions at once, write them down and respond in an appropriate order without danger of failed memory. Most importantly, use your nonphone hand to gesture, which affects how your voice reflects your energy and commitment. After the interview, the “mighty” pen will have let you record details to use in a follow-up email or interview. For example: “Yes, Mr. Doubling mentioned that too – very important. Here’s how I would approach that situation” – integrating you into their team. The client I previously mentioned was ultimately flown to Chicago as a finalist, and the trip went well. He’s waiting to hear results, and we’re both very hopeful. Stay tuned for details, and use the phone well.

For your own phone interview, choose a quiet space, free of noisy children or TV audio, preferably with a door that doesn’t admit outside clamor to distract you or your interviewer.

L

et the Maccabi Games begin!” In just nine days, these words will be heard loud and clear, when more than a thousand Jewish athletes from across the globe join 200 Jewish teens from St. Louis for the 2016 Jewish Community Center (JCC) Maccabi Games. The games – which encompass 12 different team and individual sports ranging from soccer, basketball and baseball to dance, swimming, tennis and golf – will take place at venues throughout the St. Louis area from July 31 through Aug. 5. Often referred to as the Jewish Junior Olympics, this annual international athletic competition is one of the largest for Jewish teens worldwide. Lynn Wittels, president and chief executive officer of the JCC, is thrilled that the center is hosting the Maccabi Games, which marks the fourth time it has done so. “This isn’t just an international athletic competition; the games are a way for Jewish teens to connect in a nontraditional way,” Wittels says. “It is an opportunity to strengthen individual Jewish identities and positively impact our community. Teens create and foster friendships that last a lifetime, and future generations of community leaders are identified through those who volunteer at the games.” What began as an all-Jewish sports club in Constantinople in 1895 has now become the largest organized sports program for Jewish teens in the world. St. Louis has participated in the Maccabi Games since 1984, sending local athletes to cities

throughout the U.S. and Israel. Wittels explains that St. Louis is one of the few communities to host the event four times because of the yearlong logistical challenge of planning and coordinating athletes, travel, accommodations, sponsors, venues, volunteers, publicity, entertainment and security – but Wittels says this should equate to a $5 million local economic boost with hotel bookings, dining out, recreation and tourism. Wittels calls the games a “peoplehood event,” using sports as its platform, but also involves a huge commitment to community service. More than 1,500 volunteers are needed for the event, and numerous companies have provided much-needed volunteer support. Each Jewish Federation employee has been asked to donate a minimum

of four hours. (The JCC is a constituent agency of the Jewish Federation, an organization that mobilizes the Jewish community to preserve and enhance Jewish life in St. Louis, in Israel and around the world.) Sponsors BarnesJewish Hospital and Children’s Hospital are donating medical services worth approximately $50,000, and sponsor Maryville University is donating space worth $50,000. On Wednesday, all participants will also engage in “JCC Cares,” a community-service project providing food for 150,000 meals that will be distributed to local families in need. Leading by example, Wittels, 57, has been a dedicated volunteer in the St. Louis community for many years. She is a board member of Webster University and serves on the cabinet of the United Way’s Women’s

Leadership Society. She has served on the boards of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis and Congregation B’nai Amoona, was the president of the Jewish Federation’s Business and Professional Women’s Division, and was on the Ladue School District’s Budget Task Force. In 1999, Wittels was honored as one of the St. Louis Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” and as one of its “Most Influential Business Women” in 2010 for her strong leadership skills. That same year, she received a What’s Right With the Region! award from FOCUS St. Louis for making improvements that resulted in a stronger, more-stable community, shortly after opening the Staenberg Family Complex near Creve Coeur. She has overseen a $49 million capital campaign for the JCC

that resulted in a 95,000-square-foot fitness-andwellness building, renovation of the 60,000-square-foot Arts & Education Building, renovation of the Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield and upgrades for the JCC’s resident camp, Camp Sabra, at the Lake of the Ozarks. Mission-driven, the JCC serves 80,000 people each year through programs that include arts and theater, adult day services, early childhood education, and day and overnight camps. Before becoming the first female president and

CEO of the JCC, Wittels, a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, worked in the corporate world for 20 years as a sales representative at Procter & Gamble and as a marketing executive at Pet Inc. She also served as the vice president of Career Transition Services at Right Management Consultants. She joined the JCC in 2005 as its inaugural chief operating officer and, 18 months later, was promoted to her current leadership role. When Wittels and her husband, Bud, became empty

with the Pastel ($2.95) and the Mineirinho ($12.95). The Pastel was two pieces of crispy dough filled with a diner’s choice of cheese, beef or chicken (we went with cheese), a crunchy and creamy way to kick off a meal – reminiscent of crab Rangoon sans the seafood. Although classified as an appetizer on the menu, the Mineirinho, meanwhile, seemed like a meal in and of itself: a multitude of tender filet mignon tips, sautéed in a superrich cognac-red wine sauce and served on pieces of thick toast. Decadent doesn’t begin to describe it. Next, we had the Feijoada ($14.95), an iron pan of black beans cooked with beef, bacon and sausage, served with rice, collard greens, a dusting of yucca flour and orange slices on the side. Although similar to étouffée, it

had a darker, heavier flavor from the black beans, with a touch of smokiness to boot. Of course, we had to try the Combo Brazil ($16.95), a quartet of kebabs – chicken, beef, fish and shrimp – topped with a variety of sauces, with rice, beans and veggies alongside. In addition to authentic Brazilian cuisine, Brasilia offers a host of indigenous beverages as well, like the caipirinha ($6.95), a classic cocktail combining sugar, lime and cachaça, a rum made from sugar cane juice. This favorite also comes by the pitcher, perfect for cooling an entire table. Among the other native drinks on the list, the one that really caught my eye was the Española ($5.95), a blend of red wine and condensed milk; although on paper it sounded questionable at

Brasilia, incidentally, caters to the Midwestern love of leftovers, with massive portions and boxes definitely required! Prices there also seemed more than fair – this may be one of the best bangs for your buck on Grand. Be advised, though, that dinner hours at Brasilia run from 5 to just 9 p.m., so plan accordingly. For morning diners, we hear a tasty Sunday brunch buffet also is available beneath that thatch overhang.

‌Story:  Born in 1895, Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale – the daughter of a well-to-do attorney and his wife, the heir to a wealthy paper manufacturer – once was “the belle of the ball.” She also was the sister of John “Black Jack” Bouvier, who later married and had two daughters, Jacqueline and Lee – the former of whom would become the wife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, senator from Massachusetts and eventually president of the United States. As a member of the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps in World War I, Edith’s father drilled into his children and grandchildren this mantra: “The hallmark of aristocracy is responsibility.” So he wasn’t too pleased that Edith, also known as “Big Edie,” fancied herself an actress and singer rather than focusing on her obligations as the wife of lawyer/ financier Phelan Beale and mother of three children. The family moved in 1923 to the so-called Grey Gardens mansion in East Hampton, New York, where the children were raised. After a separation from her husband in 1931 and eventual divorce in 1946, Big Edie became increasingly eccentric, maintaining she was a singer of ability. After a few years attempting to start her own show business career in New York, Big Edie’s daughter, “Little Edie,” returned to Grey Gardens, where she lived in increasing squalor with her mother. Long cut off from inheritances, they sold antiques and family treasures to purchase necessities – living in filth amid dozens of cats, raccoons and an infestation of fleas. Eventually, Big Edie’s niece, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and her post-JFK husband, Aristotle Onassis, donated $32,000 to have the house brought up to code. Both Big and Little Edie continued to live at Grey Gardens, which continued to deteriorate after Big Edie’s death in 1977, until Little Edie finally sold it in 1979. Highlights:  Max & Louie Productions has covered all bases with its superbly crafted and constantly engaging St. Louis premiere of Grey Gardens. Spellbinding in its execution, Grey Gardens is a fascinating look at two well-bred, upper-class women whose mental illness cut them off from society. Other Info:  Grey Gardens won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2007, the first musical to be based on a documentary. In 1975, filmmakers Albert and David Maysles made a cinéma vérité movie about the lives of two reclusive, formerly wealthy women living in a 28-room mansion called Grey Gardens in ritzy East Hampton outside New York City. The film then was adapted into a musical by writer Doug Wright, composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie, which debuted off-Broadway in 2006 before transferring to Broadway later that year and closing in July 2007. Although termed a musical, Grey Gardens feels more

By Mark Bretz

like a play with music. Perhaps that’s because the story is so riveting and perversely fascinating it overwhelms the musical interludes. That’s not to say the music isn’t very good – quite the contrary. Frankel’s deceptively simple melodies are maximized by Korie’s descriptive lyrics. Debby Lennon excels in two roles. In the first act, after a prologue set in 1973, Lennon portrays Big Edie in her heyday in 1941, at age 47. Lennon superb shows the bravado of Big Edie wilting in the face of her father’s bullying and her errant husband’s heartless absence. In the second act, Lennon portrays Little Edie at age 56, sporting scarves to disguise her hair loss and pounds removed. It’s gut-wrenching to watch her perform her routine for the delivery boy – the Beales’ only contact with the outside world save their caretaker. Donna Weinsting is tremendous in the role of laterin-life Big Edie. She disguises her own fine singing voice with a screeching New York timbre far removed from the smooth soprano in songs Big Edie recorded in bygone days, which she still spins on her record player. As Little Edie in the first act, Madeline Purches delivers a powerful, affecting performance as a headstrong young woman who nonetheless can’t escape the powerful grasp of her destructive mother. Her confrontations with Lennon as the Beale women fight to protect each other’s turf make for sad, poignant drama. Grey Gardens succeeds in telling the true story of the decline of two members of American royalty, while respectfully depicting the mutually desperate love of two souls lost in the sometimes indifferent cruelty of life.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne

‌2013 VON WINNING, RIESLING “DEIDESHEIM” – PFALZ, GERMANY Grape Varietals: 100% Riesling Winemaker: Stephan Attmann Aged: 500-litre French tonneaux oak and stainless steel Approximate Retail Price: $18 TASTING NOTES: Color: Light straw Aroma: Citrus, grapefruit Taste: Meyer lemons, Anjou pears and clean, dry, mineral tones with crisp, lip-smacking acidity

W

inemaker Stephan Attmann and his team at Germany’s Von Winning Winery obsess over creating the best Riesling and wine out there. Doing so starts in the vineyards, with farmsafe practices and meticulous management to produce the best grapes, stemming from

Attmann’s experiences in Burgundy, France, and elsewhere. His newer vines are planted at high density – 9,500 vines per hectare, as opposed to the normal 5,000. This boosts competition among the vines, forcing the roots to grow deep and naturally reduce yields. Attmann, moreover, uses different-sized oak barrels depending on what the wine needs, while avoiding newer winemaking techniques in order to leave the wine as close to its natural state as possible. Von Winning also has taken an approach to the market different from traditional German wineries. It’s making all-dry (trocken) or half/off-dry (halbtrocken) wines to meet current trends, given that Germans, with access to vintages from all over the world, are drinking more dry-style wines. So Attmann, with his wines, wants to appeal both to native Germans and to those abroad. Other German wineries, of course, do produce a few trocken-style wines, but most follow the traditional German

classification system of Qualitätswein mit Prädikat, which involves quality wine with special attributes. This classification ranks the wines based on the sugar content of the grapes (what we call the Brix scale) at the time of harvest, ranging from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese. Given Germany’s status as one of the northernmost wineproducing regions and its often-cool climate, winemakers there can have issues with getting grapes to fully ripen. In any event, enjoy trocken Riesling from Von Winning and Germany! Food Pairings: As a very dry Riesling, this vintage suggests a little out-of-theordinary food pairings. Although it still will pair well with spicy Asian foods, as well as seafood like shellfish and poached salmon, it also will nicely accompany vegetables, pork, cured meats and sausages.

Over the course of a five-week series, LN has been profiling the local organizations recently announced as FOCUS St. Louis’ 2016 What’s Right With the Region! honorees. This finale highlights honorees in the fifth category, RESpOndIng tO COmmUnIty nEEdS & EntREpREnEURS.

OCUS St. Louis, which characterizes itself as “the region’s premier leadership organization,” reinforced that characterization this past spring for the 19th straight year by saluting 20 other regional leaders. In February, it named four honorees in each of five categories: Demonstrating Innovative Solutions, Fostering Regional Cooperation, Improving Racial Equality & Social Justice, Promoting Stronger Communities and Responding to Community Needs & Entrepreneurs. Then, in May, the organization held the What’s Right With the Region! awards ceremony at The Sheldon Concert Hall to recognize those 20 honorees. All proceeds from that ticketed event, a release states, will “support the work of FOCUS St. Louis in developing leadership and building strong civic capacity.” The prior four installments of this five-part Ladue News series focused on the first 16 honorees. This final installment centers on the quartet of honorees in the Responding to Community Needs & Entrepreneurs category. In addition to those 20 honorees, FOCUS St. Louis

presented its 2016 Leadership Award to Dr. Jason Q. Purnell, who has served in the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis since 2009. FOCUS St. Louis’ Responding to Community Needs & Entrepreneurs category comprises these four honorees: Alive and Well STL, the Ferguson Commission, STL Youth Jobs and WGU Missouri. Background supplied by Becky Rasmussen, the organization’s director of marketing and communications, describes each of those nominees “as a new business, organization or initiative working fewer than three years, developing practical solutions, responding to an identified need or challenge and [serving as] a catalyst for change.” Alive and Well STL (aliveandwellstl.com) This communitywide effort, which the St. Louis Regional Health Commission sponsors, focuses on reducing the impact of toxic stress and trauma on regional health and well-being, its FOCUS St. Louis nomination relates. “With this initiative,” states that nomination, “St. Louis is joining other cities across the nation working to build trauma-informed communities, which have been declared by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as ‘the next major era

in public health.’” Laying claim to “significant progress” since its inception, the effort’s nomination cites impressive metrics. “Through [social] media content that highlights the impact of toxic stress and trauma with special emphasis on the power of healing and resiliency,” that nomination states, “Alive and Well STL has delivered 90 million impressions and engaged the more than 18,000 individuals who have signed up to receive information on Facebook. “In addition, Alive and Well STL has trained more than 4,000 individuals about the impact of toxic stress and trauma through a team of 50 volunteer trainers.” The Ferguson Commission (stlpositivechange.org) The second honoree in the Responding to Community Needs & Entrepreneurs category involves unrest in the north St. Louis County suburb mentioned in its name. “On Nov. 18, 2014, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon appointed the Ferguson Commission – a volunteer group of 16 diverse community leaders – to listen to and engage with area organizations, national thought leaders, institutions, experts and citizens,” states that commission’s nomination. Subsequently, the nomination continues, almost

2,000 people took part in 19 full commission meetings open to the public in various regional neighborhoods. The commission also created four working groups and engaged regional leaders, so-called subject-matter experts and the community for more than 20,000 total volunteer-hours. “This process of intense listening, dialogue and research resulted in the approval of 189 calls to action,” the commission’s nomination proclaims. According to that nomination, the commission’s final report of Sept. 14, 2015, “outlined the signature priorities at the heart of the report: justice for all, youth at the center, opportunity to thrive and racial equity.” Calling the report not the end of the discussion, but “a milestone on the path toward positive change for the region,” the nomination concludes, “On Jan. 1, 2016, the report moved into the implementation phase, with a focus on building ownership in the community for making this vision a reality.” STL Youth Jobs (stlyouthjobs.org) STL Youth Jobs, its nomination states, seeks “to bridge the divide between our region’s youth and the growing skills gap in our workforce.” Summer employment, that nomination continues,

correlates with “youth staying in school, increased academic success, higher adult incomes, [a] decreased propensity for violent behavior and youth obtaining the skills needed for building lasting careers.” In that light, STL Youth Jobs, since the spring of 2013, “has provided paid work experience, job readiness and financial literacy training, [and] career and mentoring services to nearly 1,400 youth and has become the largest and most recognized provider of youth employment in St. Louis,” the nomination states. Reportedly, both employers and youth participants have lauded the program. Citing unidentified “independent analysis,” the nomination concludes that “96 percent of STL Youth Jobs participants agreed that being a part of this program helped them feel more stable or better prepared for the challenges of life, and 91 percent of employer participants believed that their STL Youth Jobs participants were an asset to their organization.” WGU Missouri (missouri.wgu.edu) Three years ago, Nixon established this honoree “to provide an alternative to Missouri’s working adults aspiring to complete their college education,” WGU Missouri’s nomination states.

At both undergrad and grad levels, the university focuses on four fields perennially hot here: business, K-12 teacher education, information technology and health professions, including nursing. According to WGU, its “competency-based model” lets students “take advantage of prior learning and experience to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn.” That utilitarian approach, says the nomination, yields “a quality education for less time and money, making WGU a perfect fit for nontraditional students. All WGU Missouri programs are accredited, and the university is nonprofit and self-sustaining on flat-rate tuition of about $6,000 per year for most programs.” The university’s nontraditional focus, the nomination concludes, also allows it to offer “generous scholarships to further reduce costs, and to date, Missourians have been awarded $700,000 in scholarships to WGU Missouri and its parent university, Western Governors University.” FOCUS St. Louis, 815 Olive St., #110, St. Louis, 314-622-1250, focus-stl.org
