inding the highest quality in both product and customer service in your backyard sounds impossible, but Tacony Corporation has been distributing and manufacturing the best in sewing machines, cleaning products and floor care out of Fenton for 75 years. This third-generation company values its humble, family-centric culture as much as its commitment to its customers’ success. “It’s really an honor to be able to carry on the legacy of my grandfather and then my father and to keep that journey going,” says CEO Kristi Tacony Humes, who took leadership in 2016. “My grandfather was an entrepreneur at heart. He had an 8th grade education and a dream; this culture is just a compliment to my grandfather and my father and has attracted a lot of great people.” Brands produced and distributed by Tacony Corporation include Baby Lock sewing machines; Koala sewing furniture; Riccar and Simplicity vacuums; and Tornado, Powr-Flite, CleanMax, Truvox and Cimex commercial floor care, the last two of which are the company’s international brands. “The commercial floor care divsion is focused on schools and contractors,” Humes adds. “We work to make facilities clean with scrubbers and extractors. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Rhythmic Rams Remix By Sasha Shanker
T
hrough Rhythmic Rams, the Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School community service club, students can visit metro area senior living facilities to teach dances to residents. In so doing, the club seeks to boost residents’ health through enjoyable exercise and to help them make meaningful connections with students. Rising seniors Ellie Gira and Hailey Kim and I established Rhythmic Rams, which operates under the guidance of Summer Beasley, head of the MICDS dance department. Although known for organizing in-person events at local senior living facilities, the club has digitally adapted its program to account for COVID-19 pandemic safety. Given the pronounced vulnerability of residents of senior living facilities to mental and physical hardships amid the pandemic, Gira, Kim and I filmed outdoor solo dances in front of a green screen. That yielded the 30-minute Rhythmic Rams Holiday Special – a fun, easy
instructional video that seniors can dance along with. The video also integrates cultural diversity by collaborating with metro area nonprofit Bal Vihar of St. Louis, which seeks to promote Indian culture among children. “I love the narration and guidance throughout, as well as the variety of music and backgrounds,” states Laura Greenberg, community engagement manager at University City’s Gladys & Henry Crown Center for Senior Living. The club hopes to produce another themed dancing video in the near future. “I had a lot of fun filming and editing the first video,” Gira says. “Although it is something small, I think we as a club can make a difference reaching out a virtual hand to these communities that we would be frequenting if not for COVID-19.” The club has reached out to many senior living communities worldwide. Gira, Kim and I hope Rhythmic Rams Holiday Special can help spread the joy of Rhythmic Rams outside of the metro area –
especially necessary during these difficult times. Although difficult to lens under COVID-19 restrictions and time-intensive to edit, the video was all worth it knowing the joy it will bring. The online world has no boundaries, so with this video and, hopefully, subsequent videos, we can have an even larger outreach.

Breaking Barriers By Amanda Dahl | Photos by Joe Martinez
R
aw, real, powerful and humbling, the subjects that appear in front of St. Louis-based photographer Joe Martinez’s lens each portray their own story in earnest. “Everyone has a story,” he says. “I am interested in telling stories of people who are breaking down barriers and taking up space in places they normally aren’t welcome or seen in.” Coveted by top national publications for his authentic imagery, Martinez says he is humbled by those he’s met along the way, including U.S. Rep. Cori Bush – the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress – whom he photographed for the January cover of Teen Vogue. “The experience of photographing this person who I respect so much, this person who has broken so many barriers … to have this St. Louis crew in [Washington,] D.C., to photograph this St. Louis icon was really special,” Martinez says. “It was high pressure and intense, in the midst of COVID-19 and the riots at the Capitol – all of that was surrounding that shoot. It was, for me, the most important work I’ve done so far.” That’s no light claim, given his résumé, which includes tough subjects like his portrayal of the first police academy at a historically Black college or university for Time magazine. “From a personal standpoint, it was difficult for me to capture these Black students who want to make a career out of being a police officer,” Martinez describes. “I admired them for doing something outside the norm. There’s a bravery to it. I had my own questions, too, about why they chose this.” Martinez says he strove through his photographs to show the tension in the students’ decisions to follow a career path that holds many challenges and complications within the Black community – a decision that Martinez explains has often put them at odds with their families, friends and communities.

“There was always, during that assignment, this cloud that hung above what they were doing and why they were doing it, especially at that time – a year out from Breonna Taylor’s death,” the photographer remembers, referring to the March 2020 fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Black woman by police. Martinez notes that attempting to commit to film the inspiring intentions of the young cadets – many of whom expressed their hope to change the system of racial profiling from the inside – was extremely challenging for him, as he navigated the intricacy of that story through a multiday shoot that captured the students both
in the classroom and in training. Martinez traces his love of photographic storytelling back to vacationing as a child with his family and his father’s encouragement to document the moment. He always aims to minimize the amount of editing and post-processing work he does, to ensure the final photo shows a candid depiction of what he witnesses. “I’m interested in capturing the true essence of people, who they are and their stories, and finding a way to bring that together visually,” Martinez says.

Amy Camie
By Alice Handelman
ears before her first breast cancer diagnosis, Amy Camie was inspired to record a cassette tape of harp music to help a family friend in hospice care. At the time, the classically trained professional harpist had yet to experience the ravages of cancer on her own body. She had yet to undergo chemotherapy, radiation, a mastectomy and the loss of her hair. “A spark lit up inside of me, and my adventure into this unknown world of music and healing began,” Camie says. Several years later, when her father was diagnosed with cancer, Camie recorded the CD New Love – awaken to yourself to help him experience peace and healing after surgery. “I never set out intentionally to help so many people through my music,” she says. “Today, I play inspired music that soothes the soul so that people in emotional, physical or mental distress can remember the harmony and love within them.” Adopted at 1 month of age by a couple who were both music teachers, she explains: “My wonderful parents, Kenneth and Jean Conrady, nurtured my natural gifts.” Classically trained, Camie began piano lessons at age 5 and harp lessons at 10. She credits her father with encouraging her to play the harp because, as the director of music in the Alton School District, he had a vision of a harpist in the high school orchestra. Camie began teaching harp lessons in 2007 when her own teacher was readying to retire. “I knew it was my responsibility to continue the lineage of training that had been so generously passed to me,” she relates. “My students love that our harp lessons are also life lessons, as we use music as a means of self-discovery.” Camie and her husband, John, have two sons and live in St. Louis County. “John continually inspires me to discover and embrace the fullness of who I am so I can share my gifts with the world,” she says. Camie calls her life “a beautiful tapestry of a loving family, spirituality, music research, healing concerts, keynotes and presentations on conscious self-care, and sharing inspired music that sings from the depths of my soul.” A 1983 graduate of Alton High School, Camie then graduated from Indiana University in 1987. She says her role in helping people through music has evolved naturally over the years: “It’s almost as if the music reaches out and finds the people who could benefit.” Camie listened to her original music, The Magic Mirror, during her two personal journeys with breast cancer and now – as a Certified Clinical Musician through the Havre, Montana, organization Harp for Healing – has embarked on a plan to help patients worldwide. Funds are currently being raised for the Therapeutic Harp Music Study Fund at St. Louis’ Siteman Cancer Center for a clinical trial exploring the impact of The Magic Mirror on anxiety levels in newly diagnosed adult cancer patients scheduled to receive chemotherapy. Those wishing to learn more or to donate to the Therapeutic Harp Music Study Fund should phone Dina Althardt at 314-935-4550. All donations are tax-deductible.
IT’S ALMOST AS IF THE MUSIC REACHES OUT AND FINDS THE PEOPLE WHO COULD BENEFIT.

here’s no better way to cap a perfect summer day than by turning your gaze to the stars. Thankfully, the metro area has what you need to take a sightseeing tour of our galaxy – and beyond. From tips and best practices to handy tools and great spots to set up shop, here’s your guide to everything you need to know about stargazing locally. Before you get started, whether as an astronomy amateur or a seasoned pro, every stargazer needs to keep in mind a few key tips. “The farther you are away from city lights, the better,” says Jim Small, president of the St. Louis Astronomical Society. “You also want clear skies in general, but beyond that, it also makes a difference whether the air is really turbulent.” Small likens air turbulence to the heat waves that radiate off a road. The more turbulent the air, the more difficult stargazing can be. But this isn’t the only factor worth considering. Small recommends a handy forecasting tool called the Clear Sky Chart – a website that helps astronomers determine how cloudy or clear the sky will be in their celestial neck of the woods within a few days. Brommelsiek Park Stargazers can use the tool to determine four different This St. Charles County park was constructed astronomical variables: transparency, seeing, cloud cover specifically for astronomical purposes. Beyond that, for the best stargazing spots in the area, check out slasonline.org for a list of dark sky locations selected by the SLAS to make the most of your stargazing experience. Local Clinic Leads Medical Innovation to Fight Pandemic Addictions By Maggie Peters
E
ffects from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic have led many Americans to cope with loneliness and uncertainty in unhealthy ways, but an innovative St. Louis addiction care center has found new ways to help local residents reclaim their lives. “Mental health really has been on stage during the pandemic, and we are going to learn a lot about how many responded to a once-in-a-generation crisis.” explains INSynergy Personalized Addiction Care founder Arturo Taca, Jr., M.D. During the isolation of widespread pandemic lockdowns, many Americans began drinking or increased their alcohol consumption to cope. Women, in particular, increased heavy drinking by 40 percent. Add to that soaring opioid overdose numbers, and Taca says that COVID-19 lockdowns produced a perfect storm of addiction that has become its own epidemic. “Most rehab programs reduced capacity or temporarily closed during quarantine,” Taca says. “Many people also delayed getting treatment because of fear of getting COVID while admitted.” INSynergy’s response reached those in need of help despite the pandemic. Taca and his staff began offering telehealth services for individual and group therapy sessions and designed an in-home detox program to keep patients safe and start their treatment as soon as possible. “The telehealth and tele-detox services grew out from the immediate need to deliver treatment during COVID,” Taca says, adding that the discreet, at-home addiction services have been a tremendous success. “We have proven that telehealth is very effective and here to stay. Our patients find it convenient, practical, and effective.” INSynergy offers personalized programs for those seeking addiction care. Some patients respond well to a 10-day medically supervised detox program, while others need a more intensive 3-month program led by a team of addiction experts. INSynergy provides access to social workers, addiction counselors and therapists, nurses, and nurse practitioners who recognize the chronic nature of addiction and specialize in its treatment. The preferred Vivitrol Clinic for many local addiction programs, INSynergy offers the oncemonthly, non-narcotic injection as an FDA-approved option for patients with alcohol or opioid dependence. “Addiction is a very treatable condition with effective medical interventions,” Taca concludes. “People have contacted us specifically because prior treatment methods have failed, leading them to think of addiction as a moral or character defect. We know now that addiction is a chronic brain condition that has no cure, but is treatable with evidence-based therapies.” INSynergy is always looking at innovative treatments to help assist people in their recovery. Whatever the cause, INSynergy has care that is personalized for each person. 11477 Olde Cabin Road, Suite 210, Creve Coeur, 314-649-7867, insynergystl.com

he metro area’s only full-service spa for men celebrates five years in business in September, but it’s already unwrapped its gift: This June, Iconic Male Grooming Spa opened its second location in Creve Coeur. LN spoke with owner Jessica Brown about the spa’s successes, its challenges and what Iconic Male’s recent growth means for the metro area. “I feel like [the new location] will give a greater reach,” Brown says. “We chose that location [because] there are a lot of offices there with our prospective clients.” Of course, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has impacted this strategic positioning, as some area offices either remain closed or have employees working remotely or on a hybrid schedule. That hasn’t dampened the barbershop and spa’s optimism, though. “We are St. Louis’ No. 1 spa for men,” Brown says. “We offer services from haircuts to straightrazor shaves, manicures and pedicures, facials, full-body waxing and massage.” Reviewers rave about the sophisticated vibes and down-to-earth professionals, and a complimentary bar proves to be a top crowd-pleaser. “I take my son here to get his hair cut regularly,” says Sarah Johnson of the spa in an online post. “My husband got the best haircut of his life here, and he said he loves the perks … Everyone is so professional and nice!” Clients, or “icons” as the spa calls them, are extremely valued by the staff, Brown explains. In a show of appreciation and care, the original location in Ballwin recently held a raffle to benefit one of its clients who is undergoing a second battle against brain cancer. The large gift basket featured a variety of bourbons, a Jack Black facial kit and two branded whiskey glasses. The proceeds supported the client’s family as he underwent treatment at Rochester, Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic. At Iconic Male, Brown says “full-service” means providing luxuries that address both appearance and internal comfort. Clients can opt

for a barber experience, with tailored haircuts and sculpted beard trims, or treat themselves with a relaxing straight-razor shave, complete with a hot towel wrap. The spa experience extends to nail treatments, waxing services and facials. Customers can also indulge with hour-long massages for the feet, hands or body. Products used at the spa are available for purchase to use at home, including from top-of-the-line brands like Kevin Murphy
and Jack Black. “[Jack Black’s] face buff is my No. 1 favorite,” Brown adds. So, how can clients expect to feel after leaving Iconic Male? “This word was determined by our clients,” Brown says. “Iconic.”

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE! By Pat Raven, Ph.D., and Julie Hess
J
une’s nasty heat wave made me revisit watering options for our garden and containers. Although we have a great irrigation system installed, I’d never learned to use it completely. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I finally had the time to read the manual and begin to use it more efficiently, but many of the pots and baskets are not “online” with it yet, so I’ve been out dragging hoses to keep many things alive. That hands-on experience reminded me of how many tricks and tips I’ve picked up over the years – and I want to share a few of them with you: Invest in convenient watering wands. First, there’s no perfect watering wand. In the first year, they all might be great, but over time, they crack, leak and drip water down your arms and legs. It’s not you – we all suffer from this. So plan on replacing your wands annually if you don’t want wet feet. Also, storing them indoors in the winter may prolong their utility.
42
JULY 23, 2021 | LadueNews.com
This year, I selected two new models: the short wand measures about 14 inches, has an adjustable nozzle with the essential “shower” mode (my favorite for watering pots) and also has a latch to keep the water flowing without causing hand cramps; the long wand is much the same but measures 3 feet to easily reach hanging baskets. Adjustable-length wands do exist, but take heed – they’re typically first to develop annoying leaks. Use in-line shut-off valves. If your hose doesn’t have a built-in shut-off valve, add an external one to keep from crimping the hose to temporarily shut off water flow. A crimped hose develops annoying kinks that increase watering frustration. Driving cars over a hose also increases aggravating kinks, as doing so can weaken its wall structure or crush connectors. Multiply the supply. Adding brass manifolds in Y or four-gang units at the faucet allows hoses to remain connected for different applications. If your sprinkler is running and
you want to mix fertilizer, these handy devices make it possible to split one faucet into two or four. Solid, quality brass ones, incidentally, are worth the extra cost. Stop leaks. Good hoses are less likely to drip. To better prevent annoying wateringequipment leaks from occurring, use only premium hoses and full-size rubber or neoprene replacement hose gaskets. Choose a bright color, like red or pink, to help make them more visible in place or find one if it pops out. A fresh gasket is always the first step to try when addressing a leaking hose. Hose-mender kits are also available if a leak is in the hose itself and not the fittings. I hope that these tips help you stay dry – and that despite the metro area’s withering summer heat, your garden collects all the water it needs for verdant foliage and abundant flowering!

THE BIG DAY Feature Story
GENOVESE JEWELERS
A Day to By Maggie Peters | Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
T
here is no day more personal than your wedding, and Genovese Jewelers has the selection that guarantees your jewelry will complement both your dress and your style. “Every bride has a different personality,” confirms executive buyer Katie Kelly. “Certain brides will be all about the glamour and want to be decked out for the best day of their life, while some brides want the focus to be the dress and not the jewelry.” Across the board, Kelly notes that brides-to-be typically don’t look to follow whatever jewelry is en vogue at the time, instead trending toward classic pieces that will stand the test of time. When looking back at photos, no one wants to think about how outdated the fashion choices were. Classics include a tennis necklace that complements any neckline and can vary in karat weight so brides can go simple or extravagant. For earrings, the style can range from studs to chandelier-style depending on how the bride wears her hair. Bracelets tend toward the simple and understated, so they don’t take attention from the engagement ring. “We always want the bride to feel comfortable,” Kelly says. “The timeless pieces are things you can wear the rest of your life and pass on.” At its core, no matter how glam or traditional, wedding jewelry is there to complement the dress. “If there’s lace in the dress, brides will go for a filigree design in the jewelry,” Kelly explains. “If it’s a more clean style, then they might go more simple or traditional.” Brides can trust Genovese to custom-modify jewelry passed down from a parent or grandparent that can be incorporated as the “something borrowed” element of the wedding. And beyond jewelry for the big day itself, the jeweler also offers monogrammed jewelry for bridesmaids or cufflinks for groomsmen. Genovese will always offer the very best in custom engagement rings, as well. “We want to make a friend through the engagement ring process,” Kelly concludes. “The engagement and wedding is a huge part of our relationship with the couple.” Start your big day off right, with a jeweler that understands how to make you shine. DESIGN DIGESt MOSBY BUILDING ARTS
Kitchen Trends For Modern Living By Maggie Peters | Photos courtesy of Mosby Building Arts
T
he year 2020 changed how many looked at thee ffu unctionality ty in their kitchen, and that has affected design trends for the most-used room ki in the house. With people spendingg twi tw twice wice as much time in the kitchen kitchen, merging style with function has never been more important. “Everyone is in their homes all the time, living and working there,” says Mosby Building Arts senior designer Laura Powderly. “It’s absolutely affected what people are looking for.” Shifts toward a more open feeling with open shelves instead of wall cabinets befits a certain type of organized homeowner, while many are realizing does not necessarily match with their lifestyle. In today’s digital age, having an electrical system that functions well is a must, and adding undercabinet lights and USB charge ports for small electronics allows for customization and frees up the backsplash area. “You can move your outlets to where you need them most in the kitchen,” explains Mosby designer Amy Avery Shaw. “It’s way more functional.” When it comes to style, the all-white kitchen trend that has been all the rage has shifted toward an exploration of bolder colors and textures. While white will always be popular, and cabinetry remains a classic place for it, the trend of using all-white for cabinets, backsplash, countertops and more is phasing out. Instead, clients have begun to use white as the base while throwing in a pop of color on the countertop or backsplash to make an impact. More adventurous homeowners have been exploring cabinets in greens and blues and other bold shades.

Eye-catching element ents have expanded beyond paint colors, as well well. “II would say layerin layering different textures and colored finishes is rising in popularity,” Powderly says. “Not sticking with stainless steel everything.” Mosby Designers Laura Powderly and Amy Shaw “What we’re seeing in the fashion world, in our earrings and our necklaces, you’ll see in the interior design,” Shaw adds. Just as the layering of textures and mixing of metals in jewelry grows in popularity, people are looking to vary the colors and materials of their kitchen fixtures. Another constant in kitchen design in St. Louis is the city’s distinct transitional style – finding a middle ground between traditional and modern elements. “There’s really contemporary and really traditional ornate extremes, however, St. Louis is somewhere in the middle most of the time,” Powderly says. “I don’t think you’ll see this style go away.” Wherever you fall on the design spectrum and however you use the space in your world, Mosby Building Arts wants to help you design the kitchen that fits your needs. 645 Leffingwell Ave., St. Louis, 314-909-1800, mosbybuildingarts.com

Your New No-Gym Fitness Routine It’s that time of year again where you try on all of last year’s clothes and swimwear to see if anything is salvageable. And maybe after quarantine, pandemic stress, virtual learning, working from home, and the dawn of ‘get anything delivered’ - things just don’t seem to fit the way we remember. So here we are dusting off the treadmill and trying to rebound so we look our best as the world opens back up. But what if there was a quicker, less time consuming way to reach your goals? Introducing your new trainer, EmScuplt Neo. EmSculpt NEO is a non-invasive body shaping treatment that provides simultaneous fat elimination and muscle building. It emits both radiofrequency and high-intensity electromagnetic energies into the targeted area for maximum effectiveness. The end result is fat reduction alongside muscle growth. The treatment is based on an applicator simultaneously emitting synchronized RF (radiofrequency) and HIFEM+ (high-intensity electromagnetic energies).
So why are Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitain, Good Housekeeping, and Women’s Health obsessed with this treatment and how does it work? Fat R e d u c t i o n The radiofrequency causes warmth and heats the treatment area. Think of it as your warm-up to loosen your muscles to prepare for your workout. his May, Coma Coffee Roasters moved across the hall from its original location in Richmond Heights’ University Tower – and added a dinner menu and bar program. Siblings Macy and Corbin Holtzman own the popular establishment, which opened in August 2016. Their family, in turn, owns and operates Richmond Heights’ St. Louis Commercial Real Estate, which oversees the building’s leasing and construction. “What’s important for us is creating a space where people can come with their friends and family or even just a place to study and chill out by themselves,” Macy Holtzman says. “We want our guests to feel really comfortable in the space while enjoying something really special from us.” The approximately 3,500-square-foot establishment – almost twice the size of the original location – features a simple modern design

and two stories. The first floor holds a 360-degree bar, while the second offers a lounge area with communal seating. A larger kitchen lets Coma offer more food and beverage options into the evening. “The evening service, ‘Coffee Until Cocktails,’ features a full bar menu with beer, wine and spirits,” Holtzman continues. “It’s a unique concept to St. Louis, as our focus is specialty coffee and incorporating coffee drinks into alcoholic beverages.” The bar program includes its own set of signature cocktails, such as a blackberry sage Manhattan with bourbon, blackberry-sage syrup, sweet vermouth and angostura bitters. Six taps dispense local beer, cold brew, nitro cold brew – and Jameson Irish whiskey. Holtzman describes the culinary menu as classic casual and approachable comfort foods. Guests can choose among a number of
sandwiches like a Buffalo chicken sandwich, as well as shareable plates including a whiskey onion flatbread with mozzarella, goat cheese, whiskey onions, bacon, chives and a port reduction. The menu also offers local products like gingerand-pork dumplings from St. Louis’ Crispy Edge Global Potstickers and a quartet of “loaded toasts” served on wares from Mr. Meowski’s Sourdough of St. Charles. For dessert, customers can indulge in a warm-skillet chocolate chip cookie with vanillabean ice cream. “I think if people love what we’re doing here during the day, they should come check us out at night,” Holtzman concludes. “While everything is still really familiar, it’s an elevated take on classic food and drinks.”

nation entirely south of the Tropic of Capricorn, Uruguay rests on a continental block known as the Río de la Plata Craton, which exposes some of this planet’s oldest soil and gives the region a unique terroir. The nation has numerous microclimates, which allow for the planting of several worldwide varietals, including the Spanish native albariño. That white varietal typically yields light, crisp and refreshing wines, with floral aromatics and tropical fruits on the palate. Bodega Garzón was founded by billionaire Alejandro P. Bulgheroni and his wife, Bettina, with the dream of creating Latin America’s most state-of-the-art winery with sustainable farming and clean winemaking practices. They use an intricate underground gravity-fed system in making wine, and Bodega
Garzón ranked as the first winery outside the U.S. to earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building certification for sustainability. Situated in Punta del Este, a city and resort on the Atlantic coast, the winery occupies a perfect spot to contribute to the area’s frequent tourism. A delightful and unique experience, Bodega Garzón’s 2020 Reserva tastes bright and acidic, but if met with a dancing palate becomes a white wine that fits easily under the category of “Patio Pounders.” Food Pairings: Grilled or sautéed whitefish, trout or salmon all pair nicely with this wine, as do salads with light vinaigrettes, hard cheese and salamis.
