In addition to planning for regular health care costs, another major potential expense is paying for longer term care when our health begins to decline. According to an AARP report, 69% of those ages 65 and older will need some kind of long-term care in their lifetime. When medical or personal care services are needed for a period longer than 100 days, then it’s considered long-term care. A common misconception is that Medicare will cover the medical cost for extended services in a facility or home.

What can these additional health expenses cost? The average annual cost in St. Louis to hire a home health aide or reside at an assisted living facility is approximately $46,000. A private room at a skilled nursing home can cost approximately $68,000 per year.

There are essentially three main paths retirees can take to plan ahead. The first is to rely on family to step-in and provide care. Some issues to consider are independence and whether the family caretaker is able. The second option is to “self-fund” and pay dollar-for-dollar when the expenses arise. This would mean having enough saved in investments or access to a line of credit to pull funds without severe impact to lifestyle. The third option is having insurance coverage through either traditional long-term care insurance or life insurance with a longterm care rider. The decision as to which option is the best fit involves an in-depth conversation with your financial planning expert. Ultimately, it could be a blend of these strategies. EDITOR ‌THREE YEARS AGO, I KNEW I NEEDED TO MAKE A CHANGE – MY clothes didn’t fit, I felt unhealthy, and I was uncomfortable in my own skin. Within a week of wogging (what I call a mix between walking and jogging), I ended up in the emergency room with a torn tendon in my leg. The visit not only resulted in me sporting a very unfashionable medical boot for several weeks, but also revealed something to me that I’d never expected to hear – I was overweight. As my leg healed, I knew I needed some help as I embarked on my fitness journey, so I got my first puppy, Charlie. I figured having a dog that needed exercise would push me to exercise, and it most definitely did. Although it took me three years of ups and downs (and we aren’t stopping here), I’m finally back to my precollege self, and I feel healthier than ever. The feature story in this week’s Daily section reminded me of how my four-legged friend played such an important role in my life and my health. Turn to p. 52 to read LN contributing writer Denise Kruse’s profile of Kimberly Flatley, a dog mom with a similar passion for her pups, who recently launched St. Louis-based Fitness with Fido. he newest community in premier assisted living and memory care will be making its way to Town and Country. Stonecrest Senior Living will be opening its next location on Woods Mill Road in early 2017, and the community’s groundbreaking took place on July 7. Executive director Linda Iken-Robertson says this community is going to be one-of-a-kind, and will be inspired by the warmth and prominence of the Town and Country area. The elegant, upscale community will feature a variety of outdoor living spaces, a bistro, a fitness center, a theater and more. Iken-Robertson notes that residents will enjoy a full calendar of activities and outings, along with an awardwinning dining program. “With Dining by Design, you can get meals at any time of day,” she says. “Meals aren’t limited to certain hours of the day.” In addition, residents will enjoy a program called Vibrant Life that has seven core components for a morebalanced life. “We want this to feel more like a home, not just a community,” IkenRobertson notes. At Stonecrest, residents don’t have to worry about utilities or housekeeping since such services are included, and staff members are available 24 hours a day. They also have a lifeline included, which “gives families comfort knowing someone will be right there for their loved one if needed,” Iken-Robertson says. The new community at Town and Country will comprise 60 private apartments in

assisted living, including studio suites, one-bedroom suites and two-bedroom suites. In addition, there will be 26 suites within a specially designed memory-care neighborhood. “Care can be put in place as needed,” Iken-Robertson says. “We build a plan to meet your needs. Our residents can live as independently as needed, and we also offer memory care.” Stonecrest of Town & Country will have a founders club, and the first 15 people who sign up for apartments with the community are going to help mold the building itself. “This is a chance for them to help make the community what they want it to be,” Iken-Robertson says. “They also get $3,000 to spend in the community however they want. Being a part of [the founders club] is huge.” The community will be similar to Stonecrest at Clayton View in Richmond Heights, but will be tailored more to meet the style of the Town and Country surroundings. IkenRobertson says the qualities will be the same, but each community is unique. “That’s what I like about our developer, NorthPoint Development. They want [the communities] to fit right in with their chosen location and be part of the neighborhood,” IkenRobertson says. “We have so much to offer to our residents, and we have fun while taking care of people. It makes everything else fall into place.”

At the event, the first John Cary Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 went to Hazelwood West High School’s Cayla Rodell, who plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Carol Cary, widow of John Cary, presented the scholarship. Patti Short hosted the event in her historic mansion. ast spring, a local grandmother and her teenage grandson moved into a remodeled historic brick house in North St. Louis with only an inflatable mattress and a few dishes. This summer, Home Sweet Home turned their house into a home. When the St. Louis nonprofit recently delivered beds, a sofa and a dining table to the residence, the grandmother was giddy with excitement, recalls Home Sweet Home executive director Betsy Reznicek. “The quality of their lives

instantly increased.” Since its inception last fall, Home Sweet Home has been providing gently used home furnishings to clients who are starting over in their lives. To connect with families in need of furniture, the organization partners with nonprofit agencies including St. Patrick Center, Lydia’s House, Center for Women in Transition, The Women’s Safe House, Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Places for People and Joint Neighborhood Ministry.

Home Sweet Home then relies on the community to donate quality furnishings that are cleaned and stored in its 3,200-square-foot warehouse on Locust Street in Midtown. “Families are invited to come and shop for all their items for free,” Reznicek says. “With a volunteer to help them, they have the opportunity to pick out a couch, lamps, wall art, a kitchen table and a bedroom set that fit their space and their style. We always start with the kitchen table [because] it is symbolic of where we all come

together for meals and family.” Home Sweet Home’s staff and volunteers use a 16-foot box truck to deliver everything from sofas, coffee tables, beds, pillows, bedspreads, linens, towels, dining tables and dishes to small kitchen appliances to the homes of those in need. All goods are donated, and Home Sweet Home always strives to offer quality items to clients. “We will only take items that do not have any rips, tears, holes, stains or major pet hair, and they must be free of smoke or pet smells,” Reznicek notes. And the condition of pieces that people donate has exceeded expectations. “We have been able to place brand-new beds, quality matching bedroom furniture and amazing dish sets into family’s homes,” Reznicek continues. “You can immediately tell a difference in the way a client starts to carry themselves as we are bringing highquality furniture into their home – they stand taller and seem more confident.” Individuals, churches and businesses across the community have donated to the nonprofit’s cause. “Washington University has been very generous with the bedroom sets from dorm rooms – enough to stock about 18 homes!” Reznicek says. “And local businesses like Encore Consignment Gallery and Weekends Only Furniture & Mattress have donated stock.” The idea for Home Sweet Home was born out of community need, Reznicek says. After working at several different women’s shelters and a small furniture

bank, she realized there was no single agency to help families with home furnishings as they transitioned into a fresh start in a new home. “Often, the staff would have to hustle to find a couch from one donor, a bed from someone else, and then have to figure out how to get these items picked up and into the client’s home,” Reznicek explains. “It was like someone needed to open a furniture bank that could serve clients at all the agencies in St. Louis.” So Reznicek set out to make that happen. In the spring of 2015, she put together an exploratory committee to evaluate the need of services in the St. Louis area, and researched the operations of multiple furniture banks around the country, from where they get their clients to what kind of program fees they have. “Using the information we gathered, we wrote a threeyear business plan to build a board of directors, [raise funds], find a suitable location and begin providing services,” Reznicek says. Since its launch last fall, Home Sweet Home has served 71 families and more than 200 individuals in St. Louis and St. Louis County. Three out of every four individuals the nonprofit provides furniture for are younger than 18, and all the families are living under the poverty level, Reznicek notes. The need for the organization’s services has been so great that it has been referred

to families in need by 26 nonprofits – rather than the estimated five agencies projected in its original business plan. The organization also has expanded its services by partnering with Furnishing Hope, The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church’s furniture bank, where Reznicek formerly worked. “This allowed us to add a 16-foot box truck to pick up and deliver furniture to clients, as well as provide a second showroom at the church,” she says. Style Speak Q&A With John Yucesoy and Matthew Kraus of Embrace One During a trip to his father’s hometown of Midyat, Turkey, in the summer of 2015, John Yucesoy was struck by the craftsmanship and quality of the telkari jewelry-making method that area artisans use to create high-quality, unique silver jewelry pieces. Yucesoy returned to St. Louis with a bracelet and burgeoning idea that led to the April 2016 launch of Embrace One, a company started with Yucesoy’s friend Matthew Kraus. Embrace One currently offers three unisex telkari bracelets that bear the colors of the flags of the United States, Zimbabwe and India. With the twofold humanitarian benefit of supporting Turkish artisans while giving back to charities within the countries the bracelets represent, Kraus and Yucesoy plan to grow within the realm of men’s accessories, and also to support more local artisans by donating to organizations that provide basic needs both at home and abroad. What is the mission of Embrace One? MK: The mission is to promote worldwide unity. The overall goal is to have countries supporting other countries, showing love through the craft. JY: Originally, we wanted to make an accessory that was a really good option for males, because for men, there aren’t many higher-end bracelets, necklaces or rings available. Matt and I were into things like that before Embrace One ever started, and when we saw these bracelets, we thought it would be a good way to get into men’s accessories. The country color is a way of giving back – the global idea that people in the U.S. could be supporting a small country like Zimbabwe or India, literally giving money back as we donate proceeds to the charity.

How did you come up with the name, Embrace One? MK: We were bouncing around names that had something to do with bracelets, the primary focus of the company. We wanted something that would tie the bracelet theme with unity, because that’s our whole message. We want to link the rest of the world with this Turkish craft. To make people think of a hug, almost. We came up with “embrace.” This is a unique look for silver – how are they able to weave it like that? JY: The most commonly used jewelry silver is sterling silver, which is actually 92.5 percent silver. The other metal alloys in it add to the hardness; silver in its pure elemental state is very malleable. Our bracelets are 100 percent silver, except for the red colors, which are copper, due to the dyeing process. The silver itself is pure, so it’s easy to bend, making the bracelets really comfortable. What is your giving-back model? JY: We donate $7.50 from each bracelet to the

corresponding charity. Sales from the USA bracelets are split evenly between Feeding America and the American Red Cross. [For selecting] India and Zimbabwe, we cross-referenced lists we found online of impoverished countries, and how we could help. We found Zimbabwe is one of the poorest countries in the world. We started looking into charities in Zimbabwe, looking at their giving rate and how much of the money donated actually goes toward the cause. The charity we found in Zimbabwe, Save the Children, is a worldwide organization that helps more than 50 countries. We are able to donate straight into their Zimbabwe fund. We donate to Room to Read in India – they build schools and libraries for younger students, focusing on women’s education. Among the many perceptions about how music inspires behavior, Gus Lubin, current editor-in-chief of the online Tech Insider, notes: Loud music makes people shop faster or exercise harder. Slow music inspires folks to take their time and remain calm. Classical tends to grace more upscale and sophisticated environments.

“On-hold” music distracts customers from the inconvenience of waiting. Familiar, enjoyable songs seemingly speed time’s passage. Musical themes aid branding. (Who doesn’t know the themes to Jaws, Star Trek, Jeopardy and so forth?) That perennial cultural staple can trigger a mood, a state of mind. When you step on an elevator or walk through a mall, for instance, music, not coincidentally, is playing – customarily upbeat and energizing music, to spur purchasing. In spas and better restaurants, conversely, it tends toward soothing. Also, nowadays, many if not most people exercise with earbuds and like devices, using music to help them keep pace and stay energized, much as music throughout history has accompanied or celebrated martial events (think “John Philip Sousa”). Today, moreover, we occupy a wonderfully polyphonic landscape. Symphonies maintain a standard of music that transcends the ages for large

individual owns a majority or minority interest in the business or whether there is a key person relative to the business. Local Golf Heats Up ‌MICDS Wins State The MICDS Rams returned to the winner’s circle with a Class 3 high school boys’ state championship. On the first day of the two-day, 36-hole event, MICDS posted a 309 score in the rain. Continuing rain and standing water, though, forced the cancellation of the second round. As a result, the Rams claimed their second Class 3 title in the last four years – they previously won in 2013 – beating two-time defending champs Pembroke Hill by seven strokes. Coach Ron Holtman considers the state golf championship significant, as it marked the seventh state championship in his 40-plus years of guiding the Rams. Coincidentally, he also has won seven state championships as MICDS’s football coach. “Yeah, seven – that’s a good figure,” Holtman said. “It’s a lucky figure, and I feel lucky to coach the boys. It was a very good group.” Chaminade Finishes Third The Chaminade Red Devils ended their Class 4 state boys’ golf tournament on a high note, bringing something back for the school’s trophy case. The Red Devils battled the weather and finished third. It was Chaminade’s first state trophy since finishing as the Class 4 runner-up in 2009. (The Red Devils last won state in 2004.)

Migdal Wins Old Warson Cup Sam Migdal, De Smet and University of Central Missouri graduate, rallied and then defeated No. 1-seeded Skip Berkmeyer in the Old Warson Cup. The 16-player match-play tournament kicked off the local amateur golf season. Those 16 players were invited based on their finish in the 2015 MAGA Player of the Year Point Standings, in which Migdal ranked as the No. 2 seed. Weldon Turns Pro Kyle Weldon, a recent graduate of Kansas State and a Parkway South graduate, knows what he will be doing

after college: pursuing his dream of pro golf. “It feels nice to be done,” Weldon said about college. “I’ve wanted to turn professional for a long time. Since high school, when I really got into golf, I saw the success that Scott Langley [Parkway South, Illinois graduate] was having as a professional. Now that I’m older, guys my age are out there on the [PGA] Tour. It’s really motivating to me. I definitely feel I’ve got the game and the talent to do it. Now I’ve just got to go and work my butt off to do it.” The Des Peres native played in the last group of the day in the recent U.S. Open Qualifier at Forest Hills Country Club and finished on top of the leaderboard. Weldon clinched his spot in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying with a 2 under 68. Weldon made his third trip to the sectional round with his win, but did not qualify for the U.S. Open in the 36-hole sectional in Memphis. Normandie Amateur Ryan Haxel, a 2013 graduate of Westminster Christian Academy, closed out Round 2 at Normandie Golf Club with a 1 under 70, the only red-figure round of the twoday event, to capture the 30th Normandie Amateur. Haxel began his round in a three-way tie with former SIU-Carbondale Saluki teammate Steven Souchek and Greg Sanborn at 73.

Unintentional Bullying

ost adults believe bullies exist only at school. Some children, though, return home from their classes only to face further humiliation from an unexpected source – their parents. Many well-intentioned adults often bully their children unknowingly, not realizing the harm their behavior can cause. Such parents seek not to erode self-esteem, but rather, say, to build identity. Consider, for instance, the caregiver who assigns a “cute” pet name that focuses on a child’s sensitive area – for example, calling an overweight child “Chunky Monkey,” a small child “Shortcake” or an ADHD child “Wiggles.” These nicknames, meant as endearments, in actuality subtly criticize. Other parents may try to motivate their child by continually identifying the successes of a sibling. Mom may say, “If only you could do math as well as your brother.” Or dad may comment, “Practice more so you can make the varsity team like your sister.” When a child regularly hears these accolades, he or she may begin to feel inferior and develop hidden resentments. On the other hand, a mother who focuses overmuch on a sensitive child also may create sibling conflict. When schedules and rules are created around the behavior of one, other children can feel inferior and angry – so parents should strive to strike a balance among the needs of all. Overprotective adults also can exhibit bullying behavior. Without disputing the acceptability of safeguarding a child by telling him or her to not do something, some parents abuse this approach. Continual use of the word don’t forms an attempt to dictate a child’s behavior, and such parenting “puppetry” teaches him or her to be overly dependent and inappropriately anxious. At any given time, every parent will use some of these misguided strategies, and that’s OK. A parent who regularly employs these techniques, though, is bullying his or her child. To avoid such parenting pitfalls, you yourself should provide and discuss solutions rather than dictate behavior. Instead of telling your child to eat less, for example, teach him or her how to cook healthily and make better dietary choices. Also, because mothers and fathers act inappropriately because of frustration, learn to reflect on bothersome behaviors and practice patience – a stratagem much easier than it sounds. Let your child make the occasional mistake, but then discuss alternative approaches. Some of life’s lessons are best learned the hard way for parents and kids alike.

St. Louis’ Fitness with Fido lets you master working out with your four-legged best friend.

ost of us are familiar with the pattern: When we settle into a comfortable relationship, our desire for quality time and comfort outweighs (no pun intended) the need to hit the gym. It’s not just by happenstance – recent studies from Southern Methodist University and the journal Social Science & Medicine have shown that the happier we are in our relationships, the more likely we are to gain weight. Becoming a parent can exacerbate this phenomenon, and becoming a pet parent, as it turns out, can have a similar effect. To stay competitive among the bevy of options out there, many gyms are expanding their amenities to include child care built into the price of memberships. But no gyms – at least not any of the national heavy-hitters – offer amenities for pups, save for a bowl of water outside the front door.

With an enthusiasm for health and fitness and an everlasting love for her two poodles, Oscar and Leah, Kimberly Flatley found herself in this predicament. Each time she left to work out, she faced her dogs’ sweet, guilt-inducing eyes. The time she had to herself was quickly swept away by gym time and quality time with her pups. “I decided to start combining my workouts with them, to save time and spend time with them,” Flatley says. “This is how it came together – combining fitness and dogs.” A few online searches of fitness classes with dogs led her to a California-based company called Leash Your Fitness. Flatley reached out to owner Dawn Celapino, who mentored Flatley as she began developing her own doggie-fitness classes. Flatley worked hard to complete the necessary certifications to become a trainer. She also is certified in pet first aid and CPR, pet nutrition and animal behavior, and has worked with dogs as a groomer and agility trainer. For her human clients, she has American Council on Exercise group-fitness instructor certification, and is a certified personal trainer, Pilates instructor and nutrition coach. Flatley also has CPR and automated external defibrillator training and certification. Fitness with Fido launched in July 2015 with classes at Edmunson Park by Lambert-St. Louis International Airport on Mondays, as well as six-week classes at the American Kennel Club Museum of the

Dog in Queeny Park in Ballwin, with the occasional special workout event in between at Forest Park. The classes begin with a 10-minute walk to get the dogs to acclimate to being around other dogs and new humans and to calm their nerves a little. The workout focuses on a different area of the body – for example, one week focuses on the upper body, which includes a lot of resistance-band workouts and pushups, Tabata-style – instead of a set number of reps at the instructor’s pace, and sets are timed with rest intervals in between (for example, 30 seconds on with 10-second rests between sets) so attendees can push themselves to their maximum level of fitness within their own timing. The dogs join the fun with puppy pushups, to see how many “sits” the dogs can do in a single minute. The lower-body puppy challenge is more a workout-in-tandem: Called the “squat and stay,” this test of wills requires the pet parent to squat and hold a position while his or her dog has to sit and stay – to see who can hold the longest. The exercise combines mental stimulation for the dogs with a vigorous physical workout for both. Flatley also offers “Doga” classes – yoga for dogs. For the first half of the class, attendees walk and stop to do standing yoga poses, then come back to the mats for dog stretches, and some mat work for the humans, ending with a five- to 10-minute dog massage. Both targeted body classes as well as Doga classes are about an hour long. If you’re worried about your spirited dog breaking the calm vibe, Flatley is prepared to help. “I usually tell them they can come without their dog to get in the movements themselves, then bring their dog,” she says. “Normally, the more you come, the more they get used to it, as long as you’re practicing good behavior.” Among the many benefits of the Fitness with Fido program, Flatley cites specific behavioral and

emotional benefits from being able to bring your dog with you to participate in a workout. Bonding is a big advantage – far too often dogs miss out on spending quality time with their pet parents, especially during the workweek. Flatley allows one dog per person, not only for a ratio that is easier to control, but also so both dog and human get the maximum physical and mental benefits. Adding in dog obedience to the regimen helps with compliance training, and throwing in games for furry friends in the middle of the routine helps humans take a bit of a break themselves, “so people aren’t just sweating,” Flatley says. Flatley plans to grow the Fitness with Fido program as more interest picks up, with plans to offer more dog-friendly active programs such as paddleboarding and hiking, as well as an online program for at-home Fitness with Fido workouts. She also hopes to offer hands-free dog leashes to allow easier movements for clients and their pups. Longterm, Flatley hopes to open a dog-friendly fitness studio and dog plaza that will offer fitness classes and personal training for humans and dogs, healthy snacks and a spa for dogs to freshen up post-workout. She currently offers nutrition seminars for dogs and their owners, as well as large-scale Doga events, with part of the Doga proceeds going to support local dog shelters and charities. Seafood is a personal favorite, so 801 Fish’s extensive menu made dinner a tough decision, although fresh oysters were required. My final selection was a trio of fine shellfish: the 801 signature oyster ($3) from Virginia; the Kumamoto ($6) from California; and the Kusshi ($6) from up Canada way. The oysters typically come with lemon, red-wine mignonette, fresh horseradish and a house cocktail sauce, all of which are quite tasty, but I opted to enjoy mine with simply the briny seasoning of the sea. All were excellent. For something completely different, we then ordered the baked Maryland crab gratin ($15), a creamy mix of sweet jumbo lump crab, cheddar and Parmesan served with toast points. Like oysters, when lobster appears on the menu, I get

tunnel vision, so the 12-ounce Maine lobster tail ($55) was an imperative as well. It was prepped tableside and accented only with drawn butter and roasted lemon. This dish epitomized simplicity, proof that the best chefs let the ingredients speak for themselves. Our second round involved the ahi tuna ($38), a beautiful deep, rosy-rare, supremely succulent steak served with marinated artichokes, olives, charred tomatoes and a piquant olive pesto. Like the lobster tail, the tuna was thankfully allowed to tell its own story. Drinkwise, we chose the Jalisco Old Fashioned ($14), a fine combo of tequila, agave nectar and bitters, and from that aforementioned wine selection, a glass of Marcel DIESS Riesling ($20) from Alsace. Both beverages cut through the richness of the

eing in the middle of the country, St. Louis isn’t exactly known for its fresh seafood. But thanks to 801 Fish, which recently opened in Clayton, St. Louisans can get a top-notch meal from the sea that rivals anyplace that’s closer to the shore. The interior of 801 Fish is described on its website as “shimmering,” which is an apt term. Chihuly-esque light fixtures accent the luxurious space, and aquatic accouterments arrayed on the walls are all class, no kitsch. The restaurant also features an ample bar area and a spacious main dining room, along with private dining rooms and seats at the raw and chef’s bars. See-through shelving between the bar and main dining room fully displays the enormous wine selection there.

A fine selection of meaty delights is on hand at 801 Fish in case seafood isn’t up your alley (though why anyone would opt for a steak when blessed with such a bounty from the sea seems a mystery to me, especially when stellar sister restaurant 801 Chophouse sits right across the street). Daytime diners can check out lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. or savor Sunday brunch. A parking garage stands just across the street, and 801 Fish offers valet service, so entering and exiting pose no problems.

‌ tory: A man dressed in a dark suit, with a S loosened tie at his open collar, walks onstage and proceeds to tell the audience a rambling story that veers between a few primary points amid its meandering. Glancing about, the man begins to talk about sundry subjects, including a little boy whose dog was killed, a swarm of bees and a woman whom he may have loved at one time and maybe still misses. Highlights: Joe Hanrahan, artistic director of The Midnight Company, teams once again with director Larry Dell to reprise the 10th anniversary of Midnight’s 2006 production of ThomPain (based on nothing), Will Eno’s one-man play, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. Essentially a stream-ofconscious monologue, ThomPain aptly fits Hanrahan’s description of “existential stand-up.” Other Info: ThomPain is being performed in the wine room at Herbie’s Vintage ’72, a swan song of sorts before Herbie’s leaves its longtime Central West End location for a site in Clayton. Eno’s 60-minute work does not have a traditional beginning, middle or end, per se. It’s a complex, convoluted yarn that goes nowhere except to illuminate the audience about the out-of-kilter individual who stands before them. The character has had his share of disappointments in life, yet he trudges forward. He’s a modern Beckett protagonist, sometimes observing the mysteries of life and at other moments flailing away at his existential nightmare. Hanrahan keeps a level of tension in the air throughout, frequently breaking the fourth wall – even going into the audience to ask a question or two of an audience member, usually not caring what the response might be. Dell allows Hanrahan access to the room as a whole, permitting occasional visits to a bar at stage right that contains a few judiciously selected props: a box of raisins, a bottle of water, an envelope, a script. Much of the dialogue is amusing, as is Hanrahan’s machine-gun delivery, which inserts comedy in unexpected moments. The humor keeps an audience off-guard when more poignant moments arise: Was the conversant at one time the little boy whose life was altered when his dog died? Why is the boy’s reaction to that death so nonchalant? Is that the same laissez-faire attitude with which the man relates his relationship with a woman long ago? Did he love her but not know how to convey that? Or

did he just use her for the pleasures of the moment? Does he himself even know? The subtitle of the play, (based on nothing), alludes perhaps to Eno taking a modern stab at Beckett’s 20th-century railings against the futility of life and the empty promises that, to his characters, it often fails to fulfill. The character’s attention span is brief, his moods swinging and swaying at the snap of a finger. Hanrahan has mastered the one-man show, presenting himself to an audience as a storyteller who has cultivated his craft with the discipline shaped over several different works. ThomPain (based on nothing) is different, it’s difficult and it’s often disturbing. Whether you sympathize with the focal character or pity what can appear to be an empty life depends probably on your own vantage point. As Dell advises in the program notes, “Don’t be hard on yourselves. Don’t be troubled by what you might perceive as obscure … Just remember the simple human picture before you.” Eno, it would appear, wants you to think quite a bit about what ThomPain (based on nothing) has to say.

‌ hen people hear “Dielmann W Sotheby’s Real Estate,” they associate it with buying and selling some of the finest homes in St. Louis. However, Kristin Dielmann, director of special projects, sees the company as a perfect venue to help promote some of the area’s best-established and up-andcoming artists whose work may grace the homes that the firm’s clients buy and sell. Ladue News spoke with Dielmann about her new initiative to open the company’s offices as St. Louis’ newest gallery space. Tell us about your new foray into the arts. What we’re doing is creating a recurring quarterly event. The first one will happen in conjunction with the Friday kickoff of the Saint Louis Art Fair in Clayton on Sept. 9. Our space, 8301 Maryland Ave., will open at 4 p.m. and will remain open throughout the evening. We’ll have cocktails, food and our artistin-residence, who will showcase some of his work. Then on an ongoing basis, we’re going to offer up our space here in Clayton as gallery space for various St. Louis-based artists to display their work. They can bring in prospective clients, and obviously our agents’ clients will have an opportunity to look at and purchase whatever work they might enjoy in their homes. It’s a great way for us to get back to Sotheby’s artistic roots and also support and encourage local artists here in town. How did this idea originate? We borrowed a bit from some of our other Sotheby’s affiliates around the country, although it’s a little different from what they do. Our president, Kerry [Brooks], is an avid arts supporter, and he has quite a collection of his own. It’s important to him and us to have really great art in our space, and we thought the best way to do that and make it ever-changing was to work with local artists. We talked with some affiliates around the country that have done similar things and decided to roll out our own version of it here in town. Will there be any sort of charge associated with the quarterly artists’ events? There’s no charge to come in. We have a website, www.dsirevents.com, where people can find more information and RSVP so we have a gauge of how many people are coming out, although we’ll be open for everyone. Can you announce who your first artist will be? Yes! It’s Mark Travers [marktravers.com]. He’s done a lot of really cool print work so we’re very excited about that. Then, subsequently, we’ll be welcoming different artists throughout the year, changing work out monthly. At the quarterly events, the artists who have been featured during that period will showcase some of their work, but people can come in any time and check out the art. We’re looking for other artists to partner with, so I would like to encourage your readers to point us in other directions, and we’ll be happy to take a look.

ast month, the St. Louis restaurant scene was rattled by unexpected news: Gerard Craft’s fine-dining flagship, Niche, would close in June after nearly 11 years in business and reopen as something completely different. Rather than undergo a long mourning period, though, Craft announced the Niche team would begin transforming the restaurant’s downtown Clayton space into a casual, modern concept set to open in August. Enter: Sardella. The restaurant’s name references an ancient Italian version of fish sauce, but Craft says Sardella won’t be solely Italian – rather, the concept will nod to Italy. Craft, alongside executive chef Nick Blue and pastry chef Sarah Osborn (the pair, who are married, also held those positions at Niche), will help create Sardella’s breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. When Craft first opened Niche in 2005 in the Benton Park neighborhood, he described it as a casual neighborhood bistro with unique foods and flavors. He says guests who frequented the restaurant, though, weren’t familiar with the approach. “They loved the food, but they were confused by the casualness of it,” he says. “So we kept pushing ourselves to make it nicer.” Then, in 2012, Craft announced Niche would move to Clayton to be neighbors with his then-new Italian restaurant, Pastaria (which soon will have a second location in Nashville, Tennessee; Craft also opened the fast-casual Porano Pasta downtown earlier this year). After the move to Clayton, Craft says Niche evolved into a more-modern, tasting-focused concept. “It’s an ever-evolving thing,” Osborn says of Niche. “What finally was the straw that broke the camel’s back is that we had evolved to a place we felt like we couldn’t necessarily go further. [Sardella] is now more of a clean slate or a fresh start. It’s exciting.” Craft adds he didn’t know if Niche could top the stellar year it had in 2015, which included his winning a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. “I think that’s a good time to stop and start something new,” he says. Blue, who was named Niche executive chef in April following Nate Hereford’s departure, describes Sardella’s menu as fresh and casual. Blue says his and Craft’s inspiration comes from the kinds of food they’d want to eat or cook at home. “We’re trying to keep it as light and fun as possible, really,” Blue says. The chefs are working through menu ideas such as roasted meats, fresh hand-stuffed pastas, panna cottas and clafouti. At Sardella’s first pop-up, sneak-peek-style dinner on July 7, the menu’s small, shareable plates included crunchy toast with a ricotta spread topped with strawberries and charred snap peas; raw hamachi; chicken liver on toast; chittara pasta with sautéed eggplant

and cherry tomatoes; goat-cheese ravioli; oxtail braised with Left Hand Brewing milk stout and served with piadina (a thin, Italian tortillalike bread); and a chocolate-cherry tart for dessert. Osborn says she’s having to reel herself in when it comes to desserts for Sardella, especially because she’s no longer limited to sourcing from no more than 300 miles away – a philosophy of regionalism Niche adapted and evolved throughout the past few years. “I’m very excited about being able to use chocolate again,” she says. “I think I’ve learned and grown a ton over the last two and half, three years almost, by not using white sugar and not using chocolate. I think it’s expanded me, but I think now that I can introduce it in, it’s going to take things to a different level.” Blue adds that even though Sardella’s chefs are no longer limited to 300 miles, the restaurant still will have strong relationships with farmers and try to use as many local products as possible. One ingredient he’s excited to expand at Sardella: seafood. “I know [local] trout is delicious, but there are only so many ways people want to eat that,” he says with a laugh. Both Osborn and Blue stress that the atmosphere of Sardella will differ from that of Niche. A guest can walk in and enjoy a drink – which, at Sardella, will include a large local beer and wine list and an extensive coffee program from St. Louis-based Sump Coffee – at the expanded bar or order small plates and a large plate to share. “We want you to be able to come on a Monday evening and have a couple drinks and a few small plates, rather than it have to be somebody’s birthday or graduation to come in,” Blue says. The soon-to-be Sardella space on Forsyth Boulevard is being remodeled and redesigned by Sasha Malinich of St. Louis-based S. Aleksandr Malinich Design, and local creative agency Atomicdust designed the restaurant’s logo. The interior, Craft says, will sport an “’80s flair” that plays off the bright colors of vintage Italian tiles. “We want it to be more lively and a little more fun,” he says. As for the menu, leading to Sardella’s August opening, Craft and company hosted a series of pop-up dinners and even partnered with Seoul Taco’s food truck for a lunch pop-up Monday, July 25. “It’s so hard to tell people what you’re thinking,” Craft says of the menu. “It’s easier to show them.” With a new venture from the Niche crew, no doubt St. Louisans will be happy to take a look.
