hen it comes to life changes, it’s easy to come up with a ‘story’ that keeps us from taking action, no matter our age. Enter local and nationally-renowned transformation coach, Charles D’Angelo, who coaches clients of all ages to change their stories, achieve their goals, and live their best lives. “A friend of mine went to Charles for life coaching. [Because of] my friend’s recommendation, I called Charles to see if he thought it was possible for [a guy my age] to lose 100 pounds,” explains Larry Krodinger. “I didn’t know if I believed it was possible myself.” At age 74, Krodinger realized the importance of getting control of his habits. In the 10 1/2 months following his initial meeting with D’Angelo, he achieved his goal and, moreover, has felt a surge in energy. “I am down to 185 pounds – my high school football weight,” Krodinger boasts. “I get around so much easier now having lost the weight!’” D’Angelo’s coaching program offers cl clients his strategy when it comes to eating and exer xercise (outlined in his bestselling book Think nk an and Grow Thin, endorsed by President Bil ill Clinton) but that’s not the focus. The real reason peo ople travel from all over the country to see him is for his on ne-on-one insight into changing the way they think. “Mosst people who come to see me know what to do but have fou ound it difficult to follow through on what they know. By add ddressing the other areas of their lives, clients discover thatt ttheir issues with food get resolved,” he says. “Your relaationships, self confidence, finances, career, and sense of m meaning in life all can improve as a client.” Sharon Meyersick also discovered D’Angelo after research. “I looked a lot of places,” she says. “I decided to go with him because of his reputation.” Working with D’Angelo, Meyersick found his straightforward and no-nonsense approach was helpful in reaching her ultimate goal of dropping 75 pounds at age 75.

“The biggest obstacle was getting into the routine,” she says. “If you follow the program, you will be successful.” D’Angelo adds that clients often discover they’ve linked up all sorts of beliefs, feelings, and emotional states to food. “Unchecked, this unhealthy emotional connection to food can make us lose touch with ourselves and our feelings, only perpetuating the problem.” “He does a great job. He brings wisdom hard earned from his own transformation and what he’s learned from helping others,” Krodinger confirms. “I signed up to continue to meet with Charles regularly to make sure I don’t get on the same tangent again. I thought I could do it on my own; what I got with Charles was a real wake-up.” “I was really able to stick to it and lose weight,” Meyersick adds. “I am at my goal, and that has been great.” While COVID-19 took many by surprise, D’Angelo has long been coaching clients virtually from across the world via Skype, Zoom, and FaceTime. He has resumed seeing clients in person face-to-face and continues to offer the virtual options. “We have enough experience and evidence to conclude it’s possible for anyone to change the quality of their life no matter how impossible they feel it is, if they’re willing to be honest with themselves, embrace discipline, be consistent, and take responsibility for their choices,” D’Angelo says. “I would recommend Charles to anyone willing to put in the effort,” Krodinger says. “It works, and that’s the big thing.” Charles D’Angelo, 314-495-3228, charlesdangelo.com

FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Years ago, when I moved into my first “adult” apartment, my parents brought me a gorgeous vintage, cathedral-style mirror as a warming gift. It has a distressed black wooden frame and is large enough to fill an entire wall of a small room, and I love it. A focal point of every apartment, town house or house I’ve lived in since (and I’ve moved a lot), it could make just about any space feel like home to me. It’s a keepsake that I hope to own forever, scratches and dings due to careless movers and all. As fast fashion goes out of style, as repurposing finds its place and as “vintage” trends upward, everyone, everywhere is seeking things that last, items that hold meaning, keepsakes they hope to love forever. That’s where metro area companies like Virginia Graham Designs come in. Starting on Page 58, LN staff writer Amanda Dahl relays how the bespoke heirloom company creates work that customers could treasure for a lifetime. And speaking of things we hope to care for forever (the environment), LN contributor Bethany Christo profiles Dharma + Dwell, a one-stop shop for zero-waste wares and eco-friendly essentials, starting on Page 34. In keeping with the theme of paying homage to that which has meaning grounded in memories and historical significance, don’t miss LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach’s feature on The Chase Park Plaza’s esteemed barbershop, Cutters & Co., starting on Page 16. Here’s to the long-lasting treasures that fill our homes and hearts, and to the people who make them. Stay well,

HEALTH NOTES

CHAMPIONING ON By Alecia Humphreys Photos courtesy of CHAMP Assistance Dogs

‌C

HAMP Assistance Dogs, a nonprofit that places skilled service dogs with individuals with disabilities and much more, is showings it’s paw-ssible to make a difference even amid a pandemic. “We have a team of therapy dogs that usually visit anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 people a year,” says Pam Budke, the organization’s executive director. “Of course, this year is a total different ballgame. We have not been able to get out, but we are doing visits through the windows.” Budke says one such recent visit was to Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in Maryland Heights and was a howling success. “Ranken Jordan had these little walkie-talkies that the kids could come to the windows … and the kids could ask questions about the dog, and the dogs did tricks for them,” Budke says. “When we went around to the other windows and came back, the kids had drawn pictures of the dogs and gave them to us. It was just so cool.” Although therapy dogs are a large part of this nonprofit – normally visiting more than 100 facilities in the metro area each month – its main mission since 1998 has been to provide pups to individuals with physical disabilities or cognitive issues. “For physical [disabilities], we have dogs that can pick up dropped items,” Budke says. “They can open up doors. They can help with laundry. They can turn light switches on and off. They can actually get a phone; if someone says 911 if they fall and need a phone, the dog knows where it is, and the dog will go run and get that phone and bring it to them. “Then we have people with cognitive issues or depression or anxiety,” Budke continues. “The dogs are great for calming them down. Sometimes, they can just tell when someone

needs that companionship or when someone is anxious. The dogs make a huge difference.” Each CHAMP assistance dog typically goes through eight weeks of training at the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Vandalia, Missouri – a program temporarily on pause due to COVID-19 cases at the prison – and then spends an additional eight weeks at a puppy-raiser’s home in St. Louis, where they become socialized. “Ultimately, we train our dogs for about two

years before they are actually placed,” Budke says. “When we are getting close to placement after a dog has a set of skills, and they are doing well on their skills, then we will start training that dog specifically for a person.” Although CHAMP Assistance Dogs may not be placing new canines at this time, Budke guarantees the nonprofit is keeping busy with clients. “It’s crazy, but I feel like we are staying more in touch with people than we were before,” Budke says. “We are doing all sorts of videos and sharing those through Facebook and Zoom, sharing skills they can work on with their dog through Zoom. We are keeping our mission alive and active.”

The Moment to Lead By Benjamin Ola. Akande, Ph.D.

hose blessed to lead institutions of higher learning in 2020 face unprecedented opportunities to evolve and change because of the confluence of two devastating realities: COVID-19 and racial inequity. Not only must we reinvent when and how universities use physical space, but also we must begin the even harder work of changing how future generations view race and the value of diversity. In the 1950s and ’60s, both of my parents attended college in the U.S. Subsequently, even though they had to sit at the back of the bus, they wanted their children to experience what they believed was the world’s best education. So at the age of 17, I left Nigeria, where I belonged to the majority, and overnight became a minority. As a Black man, I was often pulled over for minor traffic infractions, stopped by police and treated like a criminal. I began to think that was just part of being in America. Even with a Ph.D. and a job as the new head of a business school, I wasn’t exempt. When I was locked out of my new office there, I managed to convince the security guard that I belonged only after he reluctantly opened the door and saw a photo of me with my family. Six years ago, as a resident of St. Louis, I experienced Ferguson, which validated what I’d come to believe. At the end of the day, the color of your skin can still determine how you are treated in this country. The number, size and diversity of this new cycle of Black Lives Matter protests should speak loudly to power. Despite fears of the novel coronavirus, the protests across America have included children and families, from young, old, Black, brown, white, straight and queer communities alike, and spawned a new genre of institutional commentary. Inspired to speak out about racism, police violence and the ideology of white supremacy, institutions have been making statements about

their commitments to diversity. However, words must be followed by actions, and these institutions must answer tough questions about what they represent, who they’ve excluded and perhaps helped to oppress, and what they plan to do about such situations. The BLM movement, moreover, has been gathering momentum. As we emerge from quarantine, connections and partnerships born of the movement create the potential for action and change. That’s why it’s so exciting – even thrilling – to be blessed with the opportunity to lead an institution right now. To truly break down racism and unconscious bias, we each need to have relationships with people who differ from us. Recent research from PricewaterhouseCoopers found that facts don’t

necessarily change minds. Rather, that research suggests continual exposure to experiences like cross-cultural or reverse mentoring, as well as safe places to discuss traditionally challenging or polarizing topics, to be more effective. This marks a defining moment for America, and the world is watching. We cannot waste this opportunity to create a stronger, more accountable nation that embraces all of us.

AGAINST THE ODDS

Aaron Dohogne By Alecia Humphreys | Photos courtesy of SSM Health

W

hen Aaron Dohogne started learning to play the ukulele as part of the neonatal intensive care unit’s ukulele dads music therapy program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, little did he know that strumming those strings would keep him and his son connected during the initial incline of COVID-19. “I couldn’t come to visit from mid-March to mid-May,” says Dohogne, whose son, John, was born on July 3, 2019, with a diaphragmatic hernia. “So my wife would come, and she would be here by herself, and of course, John wouldn’t be hearing my voice anymore. Multiple times, I just put my phone on my computer and recorded myself playing a song, and I would send it to my wife, and she would play it for John. She said he would look at the phone and pay attention and that he would understand something was happening there so he could kind of continue on with some sort of bonding experience.” Dohogne, alongside approximately 20 other NICU dads, started taking part in the ukulele music therapy program in fall 2019 thanks to Kelli McKee, founder of SSM Health’s music therapy program. “We offer a lot of support for parents, but sometimes some of the group offerings for parents are more things moms would be interested in,” McKee says. “We wanted to do something just for the dads because sometimes the dads get left out of the equation a little bit because the primary focus is the baby, and secondary to that, the mom – but dads are on this journey, too. They are also stuck in the unit or the one room for weeks or months at a time feeling all sorts of stressors on their own, too.” The Cardinal Glennon Foundation donors agreed with this mission, which allowed the hospital to purchase 50 ukuleles from national nonprofit Ukulele Kids Club for the dads. “What started to happen [in the group] was really beautiful,” McKee says. “Dads would come in, and they would be taught a couple chords, and then they’d get to know each other, and inevitably, they’d start talking about

what is going on with their babies, how long they’ve been here, where they are from and kind of facilitated friendships and relationships with dads.” Although they’ve pressed pause on ukulele group gatherings because of COVID-19 concerns, that doesn’t mean the ukuleles are going unused. “I was just playing ukulele for John before this phone call,” Dohogne says. “When I play for him, he kind of calms down, and he watches my fingers, and he seems to listen. His eyesight isn’t the greatest, but it seems to make his eyes sharpen up as he watches my fingers hit different notes. So I can even tell developmentally for him that it seems to be affecting him, and that’s reassuring. When you are in a hospital, you get huge moments of bad news, so any time you can see and have those moments where you can feel the baby’s brain just growing, thinking, it’s reassuring. … It just kind of brings a different, joyful spirit and lightens the air a bit.”

n all likelihood, H.L. Mencken (a pillar of old-school journalism) might well have dubbed Cutters & Co. a tonsorial emporium – an appropriately grand phrase for the barbershop on the lower level of the regal Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood. Miriam Meyer serves as the barbershop’s managing partner and owns it with her husband, Tom. Meyer, with pardonable pride, reflects on its history, as both Cutters & Co. and the très élégante landmark housing it approach their mutual 100th anniversary. “It’s like a voyage that brings a sense of excitement and responsibility,” she says of captaining the maritime-themed shop (whose name puns on nontonsorial definitions of cutter). “We’re very committed to navigating Cutters & Co. through this most unusual time. As the entire world seems to be thrashing back and forth, we believe that our wonderful and dedicated stylists bring a measure of soothing calm and, of course, a sense of style that’s critical to the appearance and mental health of our clients.” During the COVID-19 lockdown, Meyer and her husband worked to improve what many area residents already regarded as the finest barbershop hereabouts. “We took the downtime to reimagine and rearrange the entire operation,” Meyer relates. “In some ways, everything and nothing has changed. Our renovations substantially brighten the shop, but also capture more vividly the core nautical theme. “Regarding safety, we worked closely with Paul Filla, the general manager of The Chase Park Plaza, to ensure that we increased our operating footprint for social distancing and are taking every precaution to ensure that we’re keeping our clients and stylists safe. This includes hospital-grade sanitizing, partitions and wearing the proper [personal protective equipment].” Longtime Cutters & Co. clients have welcomed the alterations, she continues. “It’s been really heartwarming to read personal notes from clients and even Google reviews

that confirm that we’ve taken positive steps in both the renovation and the safety precautions,” Meyer says. “One of our favorite responses came from Mike Nickels on Google. He said: ‘They were awesome before the pandemic, and they are still awesome. Every precaution is being taken, and they have everyone’s best interest in mind.’” Over the years and decades of its existence, of course, The Chase has greeted manifold celebrities, among them the famed Rat Pack: the merry cohort of entertainers informally founded by cinematic giants Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, which comprised Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others. In 1965 – long before the Meyers took ownership of Cutters & Co. – that nonpareil group visited the metro area to stage a benefit supporting a halfway house for ex-convicts here, and the barbershop’s décor, in places, commemorates that visit. Meyer gamely reflects on the Rat Pack, as well as names her personal favorite from the group. “Although Frank was the ‘Chairman of the Board’ and Sammy was possibly the greatest entertainer of all time, Dean personifies the purpose of Cutters & Co.,” she says. “Our self-expression tagline is ‘Cool Continues,’ and Dean was the essence of cool. “Cutters & Co., like Dean, is completely indifferent to the latest fad opportunity. We’re a classic and cool place that keeps reinventing ourselves without relinquishing our integrity.” Finally, Meyer concludes by projecting how she and her husband would like to see Cutters & Co. positioned in the coming years. “We’re certainly looking forward to at least two years from now,” she says. “The Chase Park Plaza will turn 100 years old, and Cutters will be celebrating a ‘Century of Cool.’ “In five years, we hope that Cutters will be stronger than ever and we’ll be able to look back and make a toast to all our loyal clients and new friends we’ve made along the way.” Cutters & Co., 212 N. We have resources for keto, paleo, Whole30 and just looking at limiting calorie consumption – all these different things and resources to help people understand the pros and cons of different types of diets, and how they might be applicable to them.” – DAn PeSKOrSe

S

ince 2016, St. Louis-based ThinkFit has been helping individuals achieve their health and wellness goals thanks to its meal prep kits, now dubbed an Amazon’s Choice product on Amazon. “A lot of people think about meal prep as just making food on Sundays and then having some meals for throughout the week,” says ThinkFit owner Dan Peskorse. “Which, it definitely is that, but at the same time, there is a struggle of getting it to work, having something ready to go; that calls for a lot of different scenarios.” Peskorse, who operates ThinkFit with his wife, Abby, a nutritionist with a degree in dietetics, says the key to meal prep is having a plan. “It sounds cheesy, but if you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail,” Peskorse says. “Meal prep is all about planning. So the whole idea here is if you have the right tools and you have the plan in place, then you are more likely to be successful.” ThinkFit’s tool in question is its meal prep kit, which features an insulated meal prep lunch box (available in black, red, purple and blue), a shaker cup featuring a metal whisk, a seven-day supplement or pill organizer, two large ice packs and six portion-control and clear-lidded containers free of bisphenol A, the chemical compound commonly known as BPA. “One of the biggest things people deal with when it comes to meal prepping is the portion size,” Peskorse says. “So our approach at ThinkFit is to actually use portion-control-sized containers and just have more of them versus the large, typical containers you associate with to-go meals or meal prep meals.” Additional portion-controlled containers are also available for purchase on Amazon or via ThinkFit’s website. However, that’s not the only thing available on ThinkFit’s website. “We have resources for keto, paleo, Whole30 and just looking at limiting calorie consumption – all these different things and resources to help people understand the pros and cons of different types of diets, and how they might be applicable to them,” Peskorse says. “The other resources we provide are tools that they can use to help them stay consistent. We offer a meal prep calendar that is free and a downloadable printout and an accompanying grocery list to help them stick with healthy options that pair nicely with a calendar.” Another free resource is ThinkFit’s nutrition tracker. “It’s a very common recommendation for someone

focusing on a healthier diet to write down what they eat,” Peskorse says. “It’s eye-opening when you actually look back on it. What we found is there aren’t any nutrition trackers that at the same time allow you to preemptively put a plan together, and that was very interesting because once again, if you aren’t planning, there’s a greater opportunity for you to not accomplish what it is that you want.” So ThinkFit created a free nutrition tracker that allows individuals to both plan and record. “We try to stay involved as much as possible with our community,” Peskorse says. “If you have a community that you can surround yourself with, like-minded people, you are more likely to stick with whatever it is you are doing or wanting to accomplish.” ThinkFit, thinkfitlivefit.com

EXPERT TIPS

Green Solutions By Brittany Nay Photo courtesy of Liquid Assets Pools

28    July 31, 2020 | LadueNews.com

‌T

oday’s swimming pool owners can go green to make their backyard jewels shimmer blue, local experts say. In recent times, the pool industry has been diving into environmentally friendly maintenance strategies. Among local companies, Liquid Assets Pools is making an innovative splash, offering green solutions for increasing the efficiency and lowering the cost of keeping your home’s gem glistening – and president John Jacobsen hopes these new water features will soon become mainstream. “Preventing your pool from going green, in the literal sense, might involve a number of potentially hazardous chemicals,” Jacobsen says. “Keeping it maintained also can be energy-intensive.” Jacobsen suggests these eco-friendly, costeffective tips for keeping your pool sparkling clean for less green – all without making waves in the surrounding environment: Chlorine-Free Cleaning Reduction and elimination of chlorine use is the key to environmentally friendly pool cleaning. A saltwater system is milder than chlorinated water, while ozonation and ionization systems, added to the standard filter pipes, allow your pool to run completely chlorinefree – just add a chlorine-free algaecide to

effectively fight algae. Green Heat A solar water heating system placed on a home’s roof is both eco-friendly and cost-effective – often even needing to be turned off periodically to prevent the pool from becoming too hot. Another green heating option is geothermal, which uses heat from the ground to warm the pool, offering 20 percent more savings than a natural gas system over the lifetime of the pool. Energy Efficiency Replacing a standard single-speed pool pump with a variablespeed pump that can be adjusted to provide optimum water flow for your pool can yield up to 90 percent in energy savings. Water Conservation Rather than filling or topping off your pool from water mains, use an easy-to-install rainwater tank to collect and store storm runoff. Pool Preservation Using an automatically closing pool cover when the pool is not in use will help keep it in pristine condition by preventing debris, which can lower the pool’s chemical consumption by roughly 50 percent, as well as minimize water evaporation and heat loss, all for up to 70 percent in energy savings.

hree Town and Country teens used quarantine as an opportunity to get creative – and now they’ve opened a digital shop of dainty and darling jewelry dubbed June + Co. “At first, it was something fun to do since we’d been stuck at home,” says Grace Yost, who operates June + Co. with her two sisters Emma and Norah Yost. “Then it kind of turned into this opportunity for the three of us to use our talents and open it up as a business.” The business in question opened via Instagram on June 23 and has already resulted in orders from Canada, Washington and California. “They’ve all just seen our account, I guess, running through Instagram,” Grace Yost says. “So that was super cool to see this was started in St. Louis but people all around are finding it.” Currently June + Co. has five simple yet sophisticated rings that are made with 20-gauge, tarnish-resistant gold wire – the Grace ring, which has a multi-wrapped band with a mother-of-pearl stone; the Em, which is a slim gold band with a petite navy circular stone; the Jules, which contains three navy stones; the Audrey, which is a hammered gold stacked ring; and the latest, the Birdie, which mimics a soft oceanic wave. “We wanted to start with affordable, simple, everyday rings,” Emma Yost says. “We research a lot of different ideas before putting our own spin on it. … Norah will come to us with a design that she has made, and me and Grace will either perfect it or try it out before we launch it.”

30    July 31, 2020 | LadueNews.com

Each ring is made to order by Norah; however, each sister plays a crucial role in June + Co. “We like to say I’m the chief of operations,” Grace Yost says. “I keep track of orders, package them and make sure they are sent out. We have a spreadsheet that keeps all of our information organized, and then Emma is in charge of social media and graphic design. And Norah is the ring-maker, and she just cranks them out. … It has been so cool because we have all been able to work together using our different gifts and talents.” Rings are available for purchase by either messaging June + Co. through Instagram or directly emailing the sisters at juneandco20@gmail.com. “We never really thought we would get into jewelry,” Norah Yost says. “We have always kind of been interested in business and entrepreneurship, and that is something my dad does, so it has just been cool to watch him work hard for his ideas. So we kind of took this idea and ran with it, and we have discovered a new love for jewelry. It has just been fun.”

Home Sustaining att

Dharma + Dwell is a one-stop (online) shop for zero-waste wares and eco-friendly essentials curated and made in St. Louis. By Bethany Christo | Photos by Michael Gallina, courtesy of Dharma + Dwell

T

he first step in making the planet more sustainable might be as simple as changing your toothbrush. From bamboo toothbrushes to reusable “unpaper” towels to organic cotton facial rounds and more, Dharma + Dwell aims to make low-impact living easy and convenient. It offers responsibly sourced eco-friendly and package-free home goods and everyday essentials for bath and body, kitchen and laundry, kids, shopping and cleaning, as well as sustainable bulk and refill alternatives. After launching the business in January via a series of pop-ups in the metro area, Dharma + Dwell owner Jordan Blackhurst had four events under her belt when COVID-19 closures made her turn to e-commerce. However, her journey into low-waste living, which aims to avoid sending trash to landfills and the ocean by focusing on waste prevention via product reuse, had started more than a year prior, during an aha moment in the shower where she became acutely aware of all the wasteful plastic bottles with lengthy lists of mysterious ingredients that surrounded her. This spurred her to educate herself on making more environmentally conscious decisions and to set out on living a life with a wider view of our individual impacts on others and the planet. “At Dharma + Dwell, we believe that the sustainability of our planet relies on us – making conscious decisions every day,” Blackhurst says. “Although Dharma + Dwell is a lifestyle and refill shop, my hope is that it serves as a catalyst for change in our city by raising awareness and educating others on the complex issues facing our society (e.g., climate change, environmental justice, consumption inequality and inequity).” Blakhurst’s reasoning behind Dharma + Dwell’s name exemplifies its mission. Dharma has a Sanskrit root and means “to uphold or sustain.” To practice dharma is to understand oneself and humanity’s relation to everything, including the Earth. Dwell evokes comfort and living, not only in our dwellings but also within the wider home concept of Earth. In combining the two words, Dharma + Dwell conveys the practice of making daily choices for our home with the greater good of all in mind. “It challenges us to consider the impact that every decision we

make will have on the planet and on generations to come,” Blackhurst says. Blackhurst, who also runs the sustainable-living blog Conscious Me, wanted Dharma + Dwell to be a convenient place for customers to purchase all they need for daily living while having the confidence that each and every product is free of plastic, is sustainably sourced and is made without harmful ingredients – no Googling needed. Some of her most popular products also serve as a starter kit of sorts for those wanting to embark on their own sustainable-living journey: hand soap, a new multipurpose cleaning powder, reusable organic cotton mesh and muslin produce bags, natural deodorant, multiuse menstrual cups, metal safety razors, stain sticks, a pot scrubber made from teakwood and agave fiber, and much more. Any of the Dharma + Dwell house-brand products can be returned for a fresh, refilled version at a lower cost (a slight adaptation of the original refill-your-own model introduced before the pandemic). These bulk items include shampoo and conditioner, the new cleaning powder, dish soap, dry shampoo, clay facial masks, hand and body lotion, and more. Every product comes with end-of-life instructions about how it should be properly and sustainably disposed, and only recycled or “upcycled” and compostable materials are used for shipping. Free porch pickup and $5 local delivery are available. “I often hear that living sustainably can be expensive, and in some cases, there are higher price points,” Blackhurst says. “However, the most sustainable thing you can do is to use what you have – and in that case, it’s free! I try to sell what I believe are essentials or very practical items. I don’t want customers to feel that the only way to live with less waste is to buy more. “I always encourage people to start small and focus on a particular area of their life (work, home, grocery shopping, etc.) or on a particular room in your house,” Blackhurst says. “For example, create a plastic-free bathroom, switch to a plant-based diet, volunteer with an organization that aligns to your values or carpool with other co-workers. Over time, these small changes add up.” Dharma + Dwell, dharmaanddwell.com

The ARCHway Health Award went to Christine Jacobs, M.D., and Katie Heiden-Rootes, Ph.D. Keynote speaker Jordan Hampton shared his “Story of Hope,” a successful recovery aided by ARCHway Institute. The people we have met and worked with and helped have become such a part of our lives, and knowing recovery is possible should give us all hope. Knowing that we can help change the stigma attached to this disease, along with watching those in recovery and their families enjoy giving back and moving forward, is very fulfilling.

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital

nonprofit spotlight MEMBER PROFILE

By Maggie Peters

ON THE BOARD: JAMES G. KOMAn James G. Koman joined the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board of Governors in 2007, and in January 2020, he began a 2-year term as the board’s president. Koman is CEO and founder of ElmTree Funds, a St. Louis-based commercial real estate investment firm. In his role, he oversees company operations and provides strategic vision, with an established network of more than $3.6 billion in real estate assets. “For my wife, Jennifer, and I, the health of our region’s children is very important,” Koman says. “So I am honored to start this new chapter.”

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation provides the financial support necessary for delivering exceptional health care to all children in need of care. Through proactive community and communication efforts, philanthropic giving and stewardship, the foundation’s mission is to build strong partnerships that will result in world-class pediatric health care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. In the early 1950s, a group of local leaders convened to oversee the campaign to build the nation’s first free-standing Catholic children’s hospital. This dedicated team would later form a board of

governors to provide oversight of all fundraising activities in support of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. When the hospital opened its doors in 1956, the field of pediatric medicine was in its early days. At a time when only 4 percent of physicians in the state of Missouri were pediatricians, the hospital’s partnership with Saint Louis University School of Medicine meant that families from previously underserved sections of the City of St. Louis, as well as the Metro East, would have access to high-quality care for their children. Today, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon serves more than 200,000 children every year, from the first Level

I pediatric trauma center in the state and clinical programs that have been nationally-ranked by U.S. News & World Report, to community outreach and education programs. In spite of the community challenges brought on by COVID-19 in the first half of the year, Koman adds, “We can’t forget the struggles that are faced every day at Cardinal Glennon. Our dedicated, loyal health care workers show up every day and work tirelessly to help kids and their families, because they still need us.”

n the metro area’s Delmar Loop business district, Prime 55 features upscale dining with Cajun flair in a menu of appetizers, sandwiches and entrées available both for pickup and for limited dining on its main floor and patio. The restaurant, which debuted in May 2019, comes from St. Louis natives and childhood friends Orlando Watson and Tony Davis, both of whom previously worked in entertainment. Specifically, Watson served as a producer for several major music labels and co-founded the multitiered music company Rockhouse Entertainment, while Davis’ résumé includes managing St. Louis hip-hop superstar Nelly. “In these later years, Tony and I were trying to find something to do together,” Watson says. “We thought a restaurant would be a good way for us to come together with all of our resources, connections and know-how through the years.” Thus was born Prime 55, whose savory offerings include lobster fries, Cajun grilled street corn and crab cakes finished with lemon aioli

and pickled onions. The restaurant’s sandwiches, meanwhile, include a smoked chicken grilled cheese with wood-smoked chicken, Gruyère spread, crispy onions and arugula. A beef or turkey burger is available on a kaiser roll topped with Swiss and house sauce. Entrées include a vegetable pasta with Cajun Alfredo sauce, a vegetable medley and Parmesan – with chicken or shrimp optional. Another highlight, the sweet chili salmon, features blackened Atlantic salmon with mushroom “dirty” rice, seasoned vegetables and sweet chili sauce. “Being from U City and growing up in the Loop area, I just know this neighborhood so well,” Watson says. “I think we had our finger on the pulse of what was missing down there. We’re just excited that we’re able to put something in the Loop area that’s a bit different. “It’s been exciting to see people from all walks of life come through that door.”

lmost two decades after the fact, 9/11 continues to haunt many Americans as the disturbing architectural vista of Nancy Newman Rice’s Afterwards I attests. Although now living in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood, Rice hails from New York City, subsequently studying at Ithaca, New York’s famed Cornell University before earning both Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees at Washington University in St. Louis. The creation of the 40-inchsquare 2019 oil on canvas showcased here, Rice says, directly related to the horrifying Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the twin towers and the Pentagon. “The painting Afterwards I is part of a series that’s a response to a dystopian future altered by time and human interference,” the artist relates. “Some of the images in this work are drawn from photographs of the remaining ruins of the twin towers. “Like many New Yorkers living elsewhere, I felt as if I needed to be back in my city, to add my ineffectual contribution to the collective pain.” The painting tells the tale, mixing a relatively restrained palette with an unsettling geometric assault – a surfeit of lines of varying weight, suggesting architectural components or the reflections of such components, slashing and angling and thrusting in every direction across the picture plane. At the bottom right corner of the painting, something reminiscent of rebar, its structural integrity compromised by hideous stress, curves upward; at its top right, meanwhile, something like sunshine lacking all redemptive power streams downward. “My larger paintings take

approximately three months to complete,” states Rice, who has earned, among manifold other honors, both a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for painting and an Artist’s Residency Award at the venerable Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. “Because I’m left-handed, I usually work from right to left.

“The precision of my brushstrokes requires some pressure on the surface – thus, the canvas is mounted on Sintra, a plastic substrate, which provides a hard, flat surface on which to paint. The paintings then hang in my studio for several months, which gives me the chance to make changes if needed.”

DIZZINESS SLOWING YOU DOWN? TAKE BACK CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE. BY: DR. BETH TEMPLIN, PT, DPT, GCS GERIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPIST

Did you know that dizziness affects 70% of people 65 years and older? No wonder it is the most common reason that people over the age of 70 go to see their physician every year. Unfortunately, dizziness is not often well understood by many health care providers, who may believe that it’s a "normal" part of aging. They typically prescribe medications like Meclizine or Antivert and tell you to limit your activity and to live with it. As a Physical Therapist who specializes in treating “dizzy” patients, I can tell you firsthand dizziness is NOT something with which you have to live. Here are some common misbeliefs people have about dizziness and vertigo: Rest will make my dizziness go away Medications like Meclizine will keep it from coming back If I avoid activities that bring it on (like rolling over in bed) it will stop My hearing is fine, so it can't be my inner ear I've lost my hearing, so of course I'm going to have bad balance All of the above assumptions are FALSE. Dizziness and vertigo can be caused by several factors, which can make it tricky to treat properly. The good news is that many causes of dizziness and vertigo are treatable in older adults! This means we can help you to eliminate or better manage your symptoms with specific exercises. So what's the difference between dizziness and vertigo? Have you ever experienced a spinning sensation? Like the room was spinning around you or that you were spinning even though you were standing or laying perfectly still? Maybe you sat up on the edge of your bed, only to feel like you were being pulled back down to one side or another. Or you felt symptoms come on with looking up to reach into a cupboard or while leaning back to get your hair washed in the beauty shop?

If you have, then you’ve probably experienced vertigo. This differs from other forms of dizziness where a person may report feeling lightheaded, like they may pass out or that they just feel unsteady on their feet. Vertigo can be a very strong and negative symptom that affects your ability to function on a day to day basis. The good news is, the most common form of vertigo in older adults responds very well to Physical Therapy. The number one cause of vertigo in older adults is something called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) or Positional Vertigo for short. Even though the name is intimidating, it’s actually a very treatable condition. This very specific type of vertigo is caused by loose crystals in your inner ear. These crystals are a normal part of the inner ear, but in individuals with vertigo, they break loose from the surface of the inner ear and start to float around in the canals. Since it is not normal for these crystals to float around inside the inner ear, they cause you to feel like you’re spinning even when you are not. The treatment for Positional Vertigo is a maneuver which helps the crystals move out of the canals, back into the part of the inner ear where they belong. Most patients experience relief of their vertigo symptoms after 1-2 sessions. Additional visits are recommended as most people have developed weakness and poor balance as a result of their vertigo. T

he year 2020, among other things, has truly highlighted the value of making memories with and mementos for those we love. Ginny Graham experienced this need in a very real way during the period of her life that first called her to create. “My dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 acute myeloid leukemia, a very aggressive type of cancer,” the owner of Virginia Graham Designs says. “He asked me to write down on 4-by-6 cards Scripture verses and quotes for him to look at and memorize. When he was lying in the hospital and had no energy and could do nothing else, he’d read those cards and have glimpses of hope and peace.” Charged with the mission to comfort her father through visual expression, Graham taught herself the art of watercolor and calligraphy through online sources. “I gave it my all,” she says. “I always loved and valued artwork. There was no talent, [but] there was appreciation. It was amateur hour. I looked up types of pens that I could use and tried to make [the cards] look pretty. I was an entrepreneurial spirit – always coming up with [business ideas like] walking dogs or lemonade stands.” As Graham’s talent evolved, she posted her artwork on social media, and inquiries began pouring in. Virginia Graham Designs was thus born, offering bespoke heirlooms that customers could treasure for a lifetime. Graham began helping others feel connected to moments in time and the people they loved through her giftable artwork. “I felt myself coming alive,” she says. “Through my dad’s chemotherapy and going in and out of the hospital, I would come home from work and do artwork at the end of the day, [which] became like therapy for me. My dad passed away in 2016, but I felt like he had given me this gift – this love for entrepreneurship.” What began as a part-time gig for the first-grade Spanish immersion teacher became Graham’s sole profession when she moved to St. Louis with her husband, who was studying to be a chiropractor. Four years later (two years after moving to St. Louis), her passion-turned-business continues to thrive. “I feel like the most unlikely artist,” the former educator adds. “I don’t have any formal training in watercolor or calligraphy. As much as I love

teaching, I’m now educating in a new capacity with art.” Although living in a digital age offers endless opportunities to document lives, many merely take photos only to leave them sitting on their phones. “I quickly realized that people wanted to capture the most significant moments of their lives – whether their baby’s birth, their wedding day or even the death of a loved one,” Graham says. “They wanted something they could frame on their wall.” Through her artwork, Graham has struck a chord that resonates with her, as well. “If my artwork brings someone to tears because what I’ve given them is a precious heirloom that captures a memory or something significant in their life, that is the most rewarding feeling,” she says. “There is no better feeling than seeing my artwork – that I have poured my heart, soul and time into – come to life in an actual physical product.” Graham continues: “Seeing that hung in somebody’s home where they see it every single day is so rewarding. I’ve been involved with other businesses before where you work for someone’s idea or product or curriculum. There is nothing like seeing something I’ve dreamed up brought to life with my own two hands.” Graham recently collaborated with PCB Home, an organic and handmade home décor line based in Cranbury, New Jersey, on a new collection now available at virginiagrahamdesigns.com/pcb-home. She hints that additional exciting collections for Virginia Graham Designs are on the horizon, as well as online courses in watercolor and calligraphy that she aims to launch before the winter holidays this year. Cedar Lake CeLLars continues to celebrate its 10th anniversary, having reopened May 8. The 400acre establishment, which welcomes guests from Friday through Sunday, is practicing customary coronaviral precautions, including what it amusingly has dubbed “Swan Distancing”: what the winery’s website defines as maintaining the usual precautionary 6 feet not only among guests – but also between guests and Cedar Lake Cellars’ wild swans and cygnets. CHandLer HiLL Vineyards sprawls across a picturesque rural ridge and, in the words of its website, boasts a “magnificent 4,500-square-foot terrace.” The establishment’s name pays homage to Joseph Chandler, who owned the property (adjoining a familial home of legendary American frontiersman Daniel Boone) till his death in 1952 at the age of 98, according to the website. CHauMette Vineyards & Winery occupies 310 acres roughly 23 miles southwest of the oldest extant settlement west of the Mississippi. Selfcharacterized on its landing page as “the premier midwest winery destination,” the oenophilic oasis comes from 1961 Ladue Horton Watkins High School grad Hank Johnson and his wife, Jackie. It welcomes guests from Wednesday through Sunday and urges them to savor the culinary expertise of Rob Beasley, executive chef at the Grapevine Grill, which USA Today, in 2017, named one of the 10 best winery restaurants nationwide. MonteLLe Winery welcomes guests throughout the week. It effectively opened in 1970 in what its website designates as “the first viticultural area in the United States.” In addition to its wines, Montelle Winery – the selfcharacterized “first winery in Missouri with a distillery” – also tempts visitors with a quartet of house-made brandies: apple, cherry and peach, as well as grappa, the Italianate spirit made from the lees of grapes after pressing to make wine. Today comprising seven vineyards on 190 acres, it welcomes guests weeklong (although its Vintage Restaurant closes on Tuesday and Wednesday).
