To ramp up the excitement, fashion columnist Katie Yeadon composes back-to-school looks on Pages 24 and 25 that are both comfortable and stylish for elementary-age kiddos. Contributing reporter Connie Mitchell addresses the challenges students are facing beyond academics as they continue to recover from the effects of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Read Pages 16 and 17 to discover how local school administrators aim to bolster students’ development. And on Page 12, contributing reporter Drew Gieseke introduces the new president of the Ladue Schools Board of Education, who’s making history and taking a stand to ensure the district uplifts educators and students of all backgrounds. As you read, may you be encouraged that the school year ahead could be the best one yet. So assemble a bouquet of sharpened pencils, as Tom Hanks says in the classic flick “You’ve Got Mail,” and let the learning commence. Stay cool,

hen Mindy Holman, Chair of the Board and the thirdgeneration owner of Holman, joined the industry 36 years ago, she found there were very few women around her. Today, Holman Motorcars in St. Louis is transforming the luxury car industry by being woman-owned and –operated, while continuing to honor the company’s mission. Started in 1924 by Steward Holman, Holman’s Automotive Retail division has grown from four dealerships to more than 28 across eight states. The Chesterfield-based luxury auto dealership is home to ultra-luxury brands Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Lotus, and RollsRoyce, and is committed to providing unmatched, boutiquestyle customer service in a state-of-theart facility. “Holman Motorcars St. Louis is a dealership everyone should visit; with an impressive array of ultra-luxury vehicles priced in the millions, when you walk through the doors, your jaw will drop,” says General Manager, Kaylene Grey. “I never get

tired of talking about what we do and the exciting vehicles we work with daily.” Grey, one of the first women general managers in the area, with experience at several dealerships, is as passionate about the vehicles she works with as she is about uplifting her female coworkers and promoting women in business. The company’s focus on setting teammates up for growth and success is something she sees the women around her doing every day. “Nothing makes me more proud than to hire, grow and develop other women in the business,” she says. “Our receptionist is now a training service advisor; another woman is in the management program; and one of my mentors is now a regional vice president – she came from the service side and moved her way up. I’m very proud of the women of Holman who inspire their peers every day.” Holman Motorcars St. Louis is women-run in positions ranging from Finance Manager, Service Advisor and Titling Clerk to Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Campaign Specialist.

Mindy Holman explains that women have strong listening skills and are good at building lasting relationships with clients, adding that when women come into the dealership some find it less intimidating and easier to talk to other women. “We have lots of female customers who are more comfortable dealing with another woman,” she says. “I think that our customers want to trust the people they’re dealing with. I’m happy to have people like Kaylene representing us and bringing along more women in the business.” “When I first started selling BMWs, I remember watching and listening to what the customers wanted,” Grey adds. “Women are able to tune in to the emotions of others. Those little things help us in our daily work.” Grey concludes that Holman is all about doing what is right, both for its customers and employees. “In all my years I’ve never worked for a company that treated their employees this well and I am so thankful for my wonderful colleagues.”

Owned by a woman, run by a woman, Holman Motorcars St. Louis represents a welcome evolution from the historically malefocused luxury automotive industry. The women at Holman Motorcars St. Louis look forward to continuing the company’s motto of driving what’s right for generations to come. LESSONS LEARNED

A Leader in Advocacy By Drew Gieseke Photos courtesy of Ladue School District

K

isha Lee made history earlier this year. During the Ladue Schools Board of Education’s annual reorganization in April, the board voted unanimously to name Lee as its president. For the first time in Ladue Schools’ history, the 4,200 students and more than 575 faculty and staff are now led by an African American, according to a press release. It’s an honor that Lee doesn’t take for granted. “My grandmother was a domestic worker in this community, where I now serve as president of the board of education,” she says. “Representation matters.” In this role, Lee is tasked with facilitating public board meetings and ensuring productive discussions with members of the Ladue community. She holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in public policy and administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her instruction includes emphases on nonprofit management and leadership, along with extensive research in public education and social work. Lee served for five years on the board before being named president, gaining vital experience that helped prepare her to step into the role at a critical time. A Gallup poll released in mid-July showed that only 28 percent of Americans say they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in public schools – a figure that news website Axios reported is the second-lowest on record. Between pandemic stressors and political posturing that puts publicly funded school budgets at risk year after year, Lee says that educators are under attack. “We must support our educators and advocate for their needs in the region and across the state, especially given the nationwide teacher shortage and educators who left the field without any pipeline to backfill the vacant positions,” Lee says. “We can no longer only be consumed with what is happening in our own backyard but must be concerned with the needs of the region and the state because, at the end of the day, our students and educators across the state suffer.” Lee wants to inspire change and give the next

12    August 5, 2022

| LadueNews.com

generation hope for the future. That goal reaches far beyond professional ambition. As a single mother of two, Lee has navigated the school district alongside her children – the good, the bad and the ugly. “My children found their place in Ladue Schools and successfully graduated while making friends and participating in sports and other extracurricular activities,” Lee says. “It was not always a welcoming environment for African Americans in a predominantly white, wealthy community.” These challenges inspired Lee to remain actively involved with the school district beyond her kids’ time in school. She says that by allying

with the white community, she has helped other families avoid discriminatory encounters faced by her own family. No matter which battle she’s fighting, Lee has and always will be advocating for all children: “I offer my unwavering support to undergird our students and guide them as they navigate the educational process in Ladue Schools and beyond,” she says. “I unequivocally want every student to know that they possess the ability to change the world regardless of their race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation.” Ladue Schools, 9703 Conway Road, St. Louis, 314-994-7080, ladueschools.net

KIDS MD

PROTECTING KIDS FROM COVID-19 By Dr. Joseph Kahn

V

accination against COVID-19 is proven to be the best way to mitigate the impact of this pandemic. After a longer wait than most groups, children ages 6 months to 4 years old may now receive a COVID-19 vaccination since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved such use in June. The FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization requires a thorough evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the vaccine and ensures both. Two vaccines are approved, one manufactured by Pfizer and the other by Moderna, both of which use proven mRNA technology. In this age group, the Pfizer vaccine is a three-dose regimen, while the Moderna requires just two doses, although additional research is underway, and Moderna may eventually call for a third dose. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do

not recommend a particular vaccine over the other – both organizations just recommend your child be vaccinated. Side effects of these vaccines are minimal and similar to side effects of most other vaccines: soreness and redness at the injection site, mild malaise and, possibly, low-grade fever lasting only a day or two. Thousands of children were included in the vaccine trials, and there were no serious allergic reactions, heart inflammations or other significant consequences to the vaccine. Vaccinated younger children will get protection like that of older vaccinated kids and adults. If they do get COVID-19, their symptoms should be mild. The CDC concurs that the vaccine prevents serious illness and hospitalization. We have been in this pandemic for more than two years now, and vaccination against COVID-19 is the way out of it. This vaccine is one of the most closely studied and evaluated preventive measures in history. Parents who want their children to be vaccinated – and I hope that’s all of

you – should contact their child’s physician, who will either give the vaccine in-office or refer you to a child-friendly vaccine center. For more information, visit mercy.net/ movaccine.

AGAINST THE ODDS

SHE’S GOT MOXIE By Drew Gieseke

G

rowing up, Katie Harris never expected she’d need to use a service dog. That changed in 2020. Amid COVID-19 shutdowns, outbreak cases and other travails, Harris faced a more personal struggle. That year, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, a group of inherited connective tissue disorders that impact a person’s connective tissues – including skin, joints and blood vessel walls. The pain and mental anguish were so unbearable, Harris says, that she considered ending her own life. But one day, when her emotions were running at their highest, Harris’ then-4-month-old service dog, Moxie, rushed into the room. “I didn’t think I would be able to fight the thoughts anymore and became incredibly emotional,” says Harris, who lives in Ballwin. “Moxie came running to my room and wrapped her little paws around me. It was that moment that something shifted. I didn’t want to quit fighting.” Harris realized that she needed to stop focusing on her new limitations and instead pour herself into something she could do. Tapping into her background as a social worker – and relying on inspiration from her goldendoodle – Harris founded Moxie’s Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to purchase service dogs for people. “Looking at Moxie and knowing how much she has already helped me with my disability, I knew there were so many others that could benefit from this life-changing gift but might not be able to afford one or train one with a trainer,” Harris explains. When she’s not hosting virtual therapy sessions during her day job, Harris is putting her energy into Moxie’s Mission, of which she’s the founder, CEO and sole employee. Through outreach, donations and fundraisers, the organization

has already funded three service dogs and is raising money to purchase a fourth for a veteran in need. Harris and Moxie also travel to groups and schools, where Harris shares their story and educates others about service dogs and mental health struggles, among other issues. Now, Moxie is so beloved that she’s earning national attention. The goldendoodle is a semifinalist to win the 2022 National Hero Dog Award; that prestigious laurel recognizes extraordinary canines and comes from the Washington, D.C.-based American Humane, whose website describes it as “the only national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the welfare of both children and animals.” Win or lose, Harris and Moxie are only getting started. Moxie’s Mission continues to raise funds through its website and special events, including an upcoming speed-walking relay at Bar K St. Louis on Sept. 11. The duo is also in the process of publishing a children’s book and posts on Instagram, Facebook

and TikTok, allowing people to follow along and re-share the organization’s message. Still, a win would put the spotlight on Moxie’s vital mission. “Moxie winning this award is not about winning a competition,” Harris notes. “Winning this award is about gaining a national platform to be able to speak out more on mental health struggles, providing more education about Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and chronic illness, and ultimately being able to provide more service dogs for individuals in need.” The second round of voting concluded on July 22, with category winners expected to be announced by Friday, Aug. 5. Pandemic Regression By Connie Mitchell

LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS EXPLAIN HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED STUDENTS’ DEVELOPMENT ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has required flexibility and resilience as people navigate changing guidance and rules in a variety of public venues. Students of all ages experienced some of the most dramatic shifts in routine as they pivoted to virtual learning and back again – changes that took a toll on many young people. Local school district administrators say they see more academic, social and emotional difficulties among students since returning to classrooms. “We did see evidence of more students struggling both academically and with the social/emotional side of things,” confirms Matthew Bailey, assistant superintendent of student services for the Kirkwood School District. “We saw an increase in the number of acting-out behaviors, an increase in the number of students reporting potential self-harm or harmful thoughts, an increase in student apathy – meaning they just weren’t motivated or connected to school – and we did see an increase in absences.” The Ladue School District reports similar phenomena. “As we have reviewed our data as a district, we have found that the greater areas of concern are in the social/emotional realm,” says Amy Zielinski, Ladue Schools’ assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. “Although we have seen a bit of a slide in certain areas of our academic data, it is less than the national average in both ELA [English language arts] and math.” Both school districts were quick to implement support structures for struggling students. Even before the pandemic, the Kirkwood school board recognized the importance of social and emotional student health, Bailey says, and acted by assessing district programs to address these issues, partnering with area agencies for additional services, increasing staffing of school counselors and district social workers, and adding a therapeutic counselor at the high school level. “That mainly came from students themselves overwhelmingly saying they needed additional therapeutic support in place,” Bailey adds. He credits high school journalism students – who wrote about student mental health concerns and the increasing need for social and emotional support – with bringing more attention to the urgency of the issue. “After reading the article, I reached out and met with many students several times and got a lot of feedback from them,” Bailey says. The district invited several students to join a

wellness committee where they could share their concerns with district leaders and collaborate on solutions. “Ladue Schools has a fully integrated Social and Emotional Behavior Team in our eight schools to provide students with the support they need beyond academics,” says Jim Wipke, Ladue Schools’ superintendent. “This team is comprised of one school psychologist, one behavior interventionist, one social worker and two educational support counselors. These talented individuals all work side by side with our counselor teams.” Bailey notes that not all students experienced difficulties due to the pandemic’s forced pivot to virtual learning. For some, he says, the online environment provided more freedom of expression and the ability to structure schedules that worked better with individuals’ own needs. However, many other students found the virtual environment challenging and the return to in-person learning difficult. “While we were in person, we were also focused on keeping distanced, keeping separated and not necessarily doing things we did before,” Bailey says. “I think it just felt unusual and different for our students, and a lot of them struggled to adjust to not having a device in their hands nonstop.” While school officials and teachers work to support students, Bailey notes that parents should be aware of any signs that their child is struggling, such as changes in behavior or disinterest in friends, family and activities. He urges parents to regularly communicate with their kids and seek help if needed. “If they need somebody, there’s always someone at school that they can connect with,” Bailey says. “They can start with the teachers, the counselors, the principal – all the folks who are involved in the schools will make sure they direct parents to the right supports if needed.” Kirkwood School District, 1099 Milwaukee St., Kirkwood, 314-213-6100, kirkwoodschools.org Ladue Schools, 9703 Conway Road, St. Louis, 314-994-7080, ladueschools.net

READY READERS

IGNITE IMAGINATIONS By Sheila Oliveri

R

eady Readers invites parents and guardians to join their children in exploring the endless possibilities of the imagination through a shared story-time experience. “How to Be on the Moon” by writer/illustrator Viviane Schwarz features an adorable yin-yang duo: the fearless and excited adventurer Anna and her trusty sidekick (and imaginary friend) Crocodile. Utterly enthusiastic and endlessly confident, Anna introduces the idea: “LET’S GO TO THE MOON!” Crocodile, the more rational of the pair, reasons: “But that’s out in space. Space is dark, and there’s nobody there, and the moon is really very far away. It will be almost impossible.” Without hesitation, Anna responds: “I like that! Let’s go!” While Anna gets to work building a rocket ship, Crocodile packs games and sandwiches.

18    August 5, 2022

| LadueNews.com

The ensuing countdown, blastoff and journey to and from the moon are delightfully depicted by Schwarz in pencil, crayon and watercolor. There’s a feeling of layering and depth in the illustrations, pulling you in to discover details within the pictures. Parents and children alike may be inspired to plan their own trip to space after enjoying this whimsical jaunt. Another flight of fancy is “The Egg” by writer/ illustrator M.P. Robertson, which portrays the story of an imaginative farm boy named George and his rather unusual hatchling. George finds a curiously enormous egg in the chicken coop and decides to hatch it in his room. After he tends

to the egg for three days and nights, a dragon emerges, looks at George and says: “Mommy!” Like any good mother, George teaches the dragon to fly, breathe fire and battle knights. Together, boy and dragon seek adventure, including finding and reuniting the dragon with its family. Robertson’s magical illustrations glow with light and life. His watercolor spreads capture the details of the action, as well as the love between friends in this thoroughly enjoyable tale.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

Soothing the Soul W

By Alecia Humphreys | Photo by Karen Palmer

hat once was an outdated primary bathroom is now a lavish, luxurious space, thanks to Marcia Moore of Marcia Moore Design in Clayton. “I love the flow of the space,” Moore says. “Starting with a beautiful painting at the entry, winding into the main vanity space, traveling to the soaking tub with a view of the gardens outside, then backtracking to the well-appointed shower. The whole space delights the senses, while at the same time soothes the body and soul.” True to the interior design firm’s mission, Moore’s team combined functional elements with artistic choices, such as gold accents. Although the space was gutted, Moore says the biggest transformation involved the shower. “We transformed a smallish shower into a spacious, luxury, over-the-top water sensation,” Moore says. “The linear shower niche covers two walls, with the decorative tile and hidden accent lighting.” And the decorative tile is tactfully intertwined with the design. “We used the patterned tile as an ‘area rug’ on the floor and for the back of the shower niche,” Moore notes. “This was a very satisfying project, given the exceptional amount of design work, planning and details that went into it. Everything was planned out to perfection, and the finished product reflects that attention to detail.” Marcia Moore Design, 7404 Bland Drive, St. Louis (by appointment only), 314-395-1114, marciamooredesign.com

Hearth Soul By Bethany Christo | Photos courtesy of Hearth & Soul in Austin, Texas; rendering by Jo Ann Kargus of Whitesitt Kargus Studio

SET TO LAUNCH IN SEPTEMBER, THE THIRD LOCATION OF A ‘HOSPITALITY RETAIL’ HOME GOODS AND GATHERING SPACE IS COMING TO LADUE.

Hearth & Soul’s newest shop in Ladue will feature a similar interior setup to its shop in Austin, Texas, pictured here.

30

AUGUST 5, 2022 | LadueNews.com

B

reaking down Hearth & Soul’s name is a good way to gauge what the soon-to-open Ladue shop is about. Hearth evokes the home, gathering, comfort, friends and family. Soul refers to passion, who you are, what drives you and connects you to others. Founder and CEO Susie BuschTransou is bringing these two ideas together at 9640 Clayton Road in mid-September. “In today’s world, and this has been true since I had the idea [for Hearth & Soul] eight years ago, people are hungry for a place they can be cared for and connect with others in a safe and warm environment,” she says. Hearth & Soul sells a collection of “simple, modern and classic” brands in a setting Busch-Transou describes as “hospitality retail,” which is focused as much on events and gathering as it is on selling local, national and international brands of home goods, furniture, women’s and men’s apparel and other items. Although the inspiration for the store came later, the seed was planted early on in Busch-Transou’s career, which has spanned advertising, beer distribution, brand management and creative services at Anheuser-Busch and its subsidiaries, including SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Busch Creative Services – with her and her husband eventually moving to Tallahassee, Florida, in 1996 to purchase Tri-Eagle Sales, a beer and specialty beverage distributorship. As a St. Louis native (her dad is August Busch III), Busch-Transou saw the

impact of Anheuser-Busch’s community involvement on the metro area firsthand, and that has slowly shaped her career into one focused on bringing people together. Doors opened at the first Hearth & Soul location in 2015, in Tallahassee, Florida. The Ladue store will be the third, following the opening of a second store in Austin, Texas, in 2018. The Ladue shop is the first to be built from scratch, and its unique layout differentiates it from other retail and home goods stores in the area, BuschTransou says. It resembles a private residence with distinct spaces for the kitchen, hearth room, library, dining room, men’s and women’s closets, bed and bath, mudroom and pet corner, and outdoor patio. “It gives relevance to the products that are here because you see them in the setting you would see them in a home,” Busch-Transou says. The majority of what’s sold here is what she describes as “finishing touches”: a necklace to finish an outfit, the perfect candle and book on a coffee table, a gleaming set of glassware for an entertaining occasion. There are tried-and-true brands at all three locations, such as Vince men’s and women’s apparel, as well as lesser-known brands like Christy Lynn luxury clothing out of Houston. About 30 percent of offerings will be unique to the Ladue store, including offerings from metro area artists and makers, such as mirrors, furniture and cutting boards by Martin Goebel; shoes from Cynthia Richard; honey from Millis Meadows; and decorative pillows by Joy Tribout Interior Design. Busch-Transou is particularly excited about

the Cardinals- and Blues-inspired collections she created with Anjali Kamra of Rungolee, which will be offered only through Hearth & Soul. As part of the mission to feed people’s souls and bring communities together, Hearth & Soul will host events in the home-like space and on the patio. Each month, Hearth & Soul plans to partner with a wellness organization and a nonprofit to host an awareness event for each entity. The wellness partner in September is Lydia Bledsoe of B3 Yoga, and the nonprofit is Creve Coeur’s Mercy Kids Therapy and Development Center. Hearth & Soul will also donate monthly net profits from a particular candle to benefit its nonprofit partner. As with its other two locations, Hearth & Soul also has quarterly local artist partners to sell their wares and host an event to connect with the community. Jessica Hitchcock will be the partner through September. “Something unique to Ladue is we’re also having a quarterly fashion designer partner because of the history of fashion in the city,” Busch-Transou says, noting that the shop will be launching details of this program around the time it opens. “I’m so excited and so proud to be bringing Hearth home,” Busch-Transou says. “To have the opportunity to reconnect with the community, to give back, learn from and serve St. Louis friends is really and truly an honor for me.” Hearth & Soul, 9640 Clayton Road, Ladue, 314-567-7685, hearthandsoul.com/STL

MENYA RUI

By Mabel Suen

enya Rui, a from-scratch Japanese noodle shop that opened in April in St. Louis’ Lindenwood Park neighborhood, features house-made ramen, tsukemen (dipping noodles) and mazemen (brothless noodles) alongside a selection of appetizers. The restaurant comes from chef-owner Steven Pursley, who launched popular pop-up Ramen x Rui in 2018 after spending three years honing his skills at ramen shops in his mother’s hometown, Okinawa, as well as in mainland Japan. Pursley also previously moonlighted as a line cook at iNDO in St. Louis. Menya Rui, which gets its name from the Japanese word for noodle shop (menya) and Pursley’s Japanese name, showcases the evolution of Pursley’s culinary experiences at his first bricksand-mortar eatery. “It’s been a long journey, and I’m excited to finally put myself out there,” Pursley says. “It’s been well-received so far, and I hope people continue to rock with it.” Modeled after its Japanese counterparts, the casual walk-in restaurant offers dine-in only

service in a cozy, rustic setting outfitted with bamboo ceilings and custom concrete tabletops made locally by AKT Studio STL. Classic Japanese décor embellishes the walls, while the shop’s centerpiece – a noodle machine imported from Japan – can be seen through an interior reclaimed factory window. The noodles are made with three different flours with varying levels of protein, blended at different ratios to achieve desirable texture and chew. Kansui (lye water), Pursley explains, is the distinguishing ingredient in creating ramen noodles, lending them unique water-resistant properties for signature dishes including his bestselling pork shoyu ramen. “Before I moved to Japan, I was really stuck on doing tonkotsu-style ramen with an opaque bone broth, but the first shop I worked with did something in a completely different style that I fell in love with – clear chicken soup with rendered back fat floating on top,” Pursley describes. “The sweet aroma mixed with salty soy-flavored broth is very nostalgic and brings

back memories of working there.” Menya Rui’s signature pork shoyu ramen features the aromatic rendered back fat topped with pork shoulder chasyu, menma (bamboo shoots), scallions and nori. Additional noodle soup options include chicken shoyu ramen and tantanmen ramen, which Pursley describes as the Japanese interpretation of Chinese dan dan noodles with chili oil, sesame paste, ground pork, menma, scallions and bean sprouts. Tsukemen, which is made with a thicker, cold-rinsed noodle, comes served with a concentrated scallop aroma dipping broth, topped with pork shoulder chasyu, menma, scallions and nori. Mazemen, which Pursley instructs diners to “mix and eat like Asian pasta,” also uses the thicker noodles. Available in the tantanmen style, they also can be tossed with scallop oil and house shoyu, topped with pork shoulder chasyu, menma, the dried fish powder gyofun, nori and bean sprouts. Appetizer options include house cucumbers – traditional rice vinegar pickles and a misodressed cucumber – and karaage, or Japanese fried chicken, served with a lemon wedge and KEWPIE Mayonnaise. ARTS SPEAK

A Structural Concerto By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Rendering courtesy of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

F

or sheer architectural grandeur, few structures in the metro area can rival Powell Hall, the landmark 1925 home of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, which was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Over the next few years, that edifice in St. Louis’ Grand Center Arts District is set to enjoy a monumental upgrade – privately financed by the SLSO through a capital campaign. Marie-Hélène Bernard, SLSO’s president and CEO, briefly reflects on the upcoming renovation and 65,000-square-foot expansion, the first major project of its kind since the hall became the orchestra’s home more than half a century ago. What is the planned timeframe for the Powell’s renovation? We anticipate breaking ground on the expansion in spring 2023. We expect the renovated and expanded Powell Hall to reopen in 2025, which marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the building. What would you cite as the major alterations longtime Powell patrons – as well as artists – will first notice after the upgrade? The renovation and expansion will preserve what we admire and love about Powell Hall – its acoustics, architectural splendor and historic aesthetic, and the beautiful foyer – while expanding the building to fit the needs of our

community today. We’re adding a new education and learning center that will support rehearsal needs for our two choruses and Youth Orchestra, as well as provide a location for our education programs, lectures, events, master classes and other community activities. This cornerstone of the project will allow the SLSO to connect and engage with the St. Louis community in new ways. Improved amenities that will add comfort and safety of visitors’ experience are being planned, in addition to more restrooms, concession areas, a coat check and elevators – gracing a new lobby with a dedicated guest drop-off area that connects to the existing Powell Hall foyer and concert hall. Inside the auditorium, we’re enhancing the already superb acoustics and replacing the 1967 seats to improve comfort and accessibility while maintaining the signature look of the concert hall. The project will enhance the urban environment around Powell Hall with the construction of a new entry on Delmar Boulevard, a welcoming outdoor plaza, outdoor terrace area and improved green spaces. For artists, the expansion will add necessary backstage space that currently doesn’t exist. The expansion will add dressing rooms, lounges, storage, practice space and media suites that will maintain the SLSO as an international destination for artists.

During the renovation, will the orchestra keep hosting performances – and if so, what details would you care to share, briefly, about those performances? The SLSO will continue to perform a full schedule of concerts – including classical and family concerts, films, holiday presentations, education programs and more – throughout the renovation period. We are exploring alternative venue options throughout St. Louis and will share that information when those plans are finalized for the 2023-2024 season. What led to the decision of selecting Snøhetta as the designated project lead/design architect? We were impressed with Snøhetta’s vision to preserve Powell Hall and enhance it into a state-ofthe-art music and community center. Renovating a historic landmark like Powell Hall, … presents a unique set of challenges. Snøhetta has vast experience with projects on this scale of complexity and has extraordinary depth of expertise. We also are working with a team that includes Christner Architects, Schuler Shook Theatre Consultants, Kirkegaard and BSI Constructors. CHAMPION for CHANGE By Amanda Dahl | Photos courtesy of Ladue Schools Communications Department

Becky Sauerbrunn’s alma mater in Ladue celebrates her achievements as an athlete and equal pay advocate.

A

force on the field and off, Ladue native Becky Sauerbrunn is famous for contributing to the national teams that won Olympic gold in 2012, and back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019. The current captain of the U.S. Women’s National Team is now the namesake of the Ladue Schools soccer field, home of the Ladue Rams at her alma mater, Ladue Horton Watkins High School. Sauerbrunn, a 2003 Ladue alumna, reflected on the field’s dedication in her honor in the high school’s newsletter, saying: “When I think about this field, and the happy moments and memories that can be made on it, I mean, what a gift you’ve given to me, that I will forever be tied to these happy moments.” Her jersey number, No. 11, was officially retired after the 2019-20 school year. The Becky Sauerbrunn Field dedication and ribbon-cutting took place on May 29 of this year, which was declared Becky Sauerbrunn Day by St. Louis County. “You have two prongs there,” Ladue Schools Superintendent Jim Wipke

Photos from left to right: 1) Sauerbrunn cuts the ribbon with Ladue Schools Board of Education President Kisha Lee and Superintendent Jim Wipke, joined by district and local leadership and the LHWHS girls’ soccer team. 2) Missouri Rep. says about the impact that renaming the soccer field has had. “It put a highlight not only on our alumna, Becky Sauerbrunn. It also highlighted things she stands for – most notably, equitable pay and her profession.” Sauerbrunn became a national hero again – and a role model for female athletes around the globe – when her efforts, alongside those of her teammates Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, resulted in the landmark May 18 announcement that athletes in both the men’s and women’s national team unions would receive equal compensation. “The Women’s National Team had been working on that since the first (collective bargaining agreement) was penned, right after the 1999 Women’s World Cup,” Sauerbrunn says about the monumental victory for equal rights in the school’s newsletter. “And each agreement since has been a little bit closer, and a little bit closer, and we were lucky to be the current group that got it to go to equal pay.” The dedication drew student athletes from numerous sports, as well as fans from the community at large. “There was a girl who waited in line – we had about 300 people there – and when she finally got to Becky, she couldn’t speak,” Wipke describes. “Tears were just rolling down her face. I think that tells it all right there – how much Becky means to our school district community and the soccer community as a whole.”

He adds: “Becky can continue to have such a powerful impact on Ladue and our students.” Her former high school coach, Sweeney La Barge, says Sauerbrunn demonstrated leadership abilities even as a freshman. “She played with girls that did not have her ability or skills, and she made every single one of them feel like they were just as good as she was,” he reflects. “She was a fabulous role model at that. It was never, ever, ever about Becky Sauerbrunn – it was always about everybody else, and it was always about the team. … She made everyone on the field better. She made her coaches better, and I definitely benefited from that.” As the current defender for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League, Sauerbrunn is looking ahead to the 2023 World Cup with high hopes, she shares in the school’s newsletter. “Becky Sauerbrunn is the real thing,” La Barge says. “There’s no pretense there. That’s exactly who [she] has been since she was a kid. … The way she’s looking down the field right now? She’s been doing that since she was 14 years old, playing for me. I smile from ear to ear whenever I watch her play.” Ladue Schools, 9703 Conway Road, Ladue, 314-994-7080, ladueschools.net

Bill McGreevy Piano Technician & Guild Associate Member. 314-335-9177

FDIC Insured Final Maturity 1/29/2025 Call Date: 1/29/23@ $1000 per CD Estate Feature/ Death Put

The CD is callable in six months at the bank’s option and semi-annual thereafter with 15 calendar days’ notice.

The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) represents the interest earned through each eligible call date based on simple interest calculations, an investment price of $1000 per CD, and is accurate as of July 20, 2022. Callable CDs are more likely to be called in a lower interest rate environment, and investors may be unable to reinvest funds at the same rate as the original CD. The minimum balance required to open a CD and obtain the APR is $10,000. Interest Payouts are mandatory, and interest cannot remain on deposit. The CD is redeemable at par upon death of holder.

FDIC Insurance is provided through the issuer. FDIC insurance covers up to $250,000 (including principal and interest) for deposits held in different ownership categories, including single accounts, joint accounts, trust accounts, IRAs, and certain other retirement accounts, per issuer. CDs are insured by-the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation up to a predetermined limit, based on account category. More details are available on fdic.gov. Investors should check all their existing deposits at the bank prior to purchasing its CD so they won’t exceed FDIC insurance limits.

Complete Tree Service for Residential & Commercial

CD Prices move opposite to interest rates, increasing when rates decline and falling when rates increase. CDs are intended to be held until maturity, as this assures redemption at par value. Investors may sell them before the stated maturity date, if needed, at prevailing market prices, and proceeds may be more or less than the original investment. Market values of longer-term CDs tend to be more sensitive to interest rate fluctuations. Thus, longer-term CDs are generally not suitable for investors with a short-term horizon. Other factors that may affect CD prices are order size, call features, and investor demand. Sales charges may apply. Consider all risks and benefits and how this investment alternative may help meet investment objectives.
