hen you or someone you love needs help with substance use disorder or a behavioral health disorder, it can be hard to know where you can turn. Sana Lake Recovery is there to provide care for people with substance and mental health disorders. offering both immediate and long-term recovery options. Founded by five individuals in long-term recovery themselves, Sana Lake opened its recovery center in Dittmer, Missouri, in 2019 with the mission to give people the tools to heal from substance use and mental health disorders and find “Recovery For Life.” “The thing about recovery is that it’s all about giving back what has been given to [you],” explains Sana Lake co-founder Paul Melnuk. “It’s about helping and supporting people finding recovery over long periods of time.” Sana Lake’s programs focus on two major components: Acute Care and Chronic Care Outpatient Services. Acute Care is provided by giving individuals access to medically monitored detox and residential services for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. Immediate Care for Psychiatry, Medication Assisted Treatment, and Medication Management are offered in the Urgent Access Center at Sana Lake Behavioral Wellness. Chronic Care offers Recovery for Life Services,

working with the individual to help them achieve a better tomorrow than today. In the metro area, there is close to a 90 percent return to use rate for those who go through typical substance use disorder programs, a statistic that Sana Lake seeks to challenge. “It’s continuum of care that really sets us apart,” Melnuk says. “What we wanted to do from the start was develop a service offering that helps people find [long-term] recovery and success.” Earlier this year, Sana Lake invested in a Behavioral Wellness Facility in Maryland Heights and is looking to grow to other cities in Missouri that are currently underserved. “One of the issues of substance use and mental health is the stigma,” Melnuk says. “If people don’t know how to get help, they can walk [into Sana Lake Urgent Access at Sana Lake Behavioral Wellness] and get professional help on the spot. And that is unique here in the Midwest.” With experienced staff and personalized care plans, Sana Lake gives all individuals a world-class experience, while providing support on every step of their recovery. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA My favorite part about living in the metro area is the people I live in it with. I love learning and growing from perspectives different from my own. I find purpose through telling the stories of individuals from all walks of life, sharing those stories with a wider audience and tackling misunderstandings and misrepresentations through open communication and compassion. To me, diversity is the key to building a full, successful, vibrant community. It is the job of community news organizations to amplify unique voices and to showcase the diversity that enriches us all. As your community news organization, Ladue News looks forward to highlighting all of our ever-expanding readership’s diverse neighborhoods and business districts. On Page 12, digital editor and staff writer Andrea Smith has put together a guide to Black-owned businesses you can support in the metro area right now. And starting on Page 35, don’t miss Smith’s feature on Heritage1933, a beauty company that creates products for Black women – and gives back to the local community. Our commitment to expanding the range of voices within Ladue News doesn’t end there – flip to Page 17 for our very first Student Spotlight column, wherein we will regularly give area teens a chance to express their generation’s perspectives and ideas. And don’t forget to visit laduenews.com for an even wider spectrum of coverage than we are able to fit within our printed pages. We know we are in an extraordinary and fortunate position to be given the privilege of telling your stories, and we want you to know that we hold this responsibility in the highest regard. Stay well,

LN Online The final round of the annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition was originally scheduled to take place months ago in front of a live audience at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis. As plans were derailed by the pandemic, the event’s planners took a “show-must-go-on” approach to reorganizing the competition. Finalists, including Ladue’s Jahnavi Vishnubhotla, got their chance to perform onstage and appeared in a special TV broadcast. Read the full story at laduenews.com.

ALTERED ACADEMICS By Dr. Joseph Kahn

‌A

t the end of June, after months of social isolation and homeschooling, two of my grandkids told me they couldn’t wait to get back to school. Two days later, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidance on the return to school. The goal of the guidance is for all children to return to school this fall, in areas where it’s safe to do so. Key principles include the need to be flexible and adapt to constantly changing levels of viral activity in a given community. Constantly evolving plans vary from district to district and include all in-person returns, mixed approaches and completely online curricula. Regardless of which option your child’s school or you choose for your family, district policies must acknowledge the varying developmental stages of childhood and adolescence. Although there’s a conflict between the need to socially isolate for infection control and the need to socialize to achieve academic success, distancing is critical to

14    August 14, 2020 | LadueNews.com

prevent viral spread. Schools should strive to maintain 6 feet of distance between staff, as well as between staff and students. For preschool, kindergarten and elementary students, distancing might not be practical, so classes should be “cohorted” to minimize mixing of students. Middle and high school students should wear masks. Although the AAP is a little vague on masking, some might argue that it’s too risky not to wear one: There’s still much that’s controversial about prevention of COVID-19. While plans evolve and change nearly daily, here are some of the suggestions made by the AAP for the return to school for middle and high schools: Block scheduling. Avoid the use of lockers (because they’re so close to one another). Rotate teachers instead of students in classrooms, when feasible. Restructure to smaller groups in classrooms.

Travel just one way in hallways. Stagger classes so there’s less congestion in hallways. Use large spaces and outdoor areas as much as possible. Consider alternatives to lunchrooms, such as students lunching at their desks. All schools should follow local health department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for cleaning and disinfection. And finally, regardless of COVID-19, everyone should wash his or her hands as often as possible. It’s critical to the wellbeing of our children that they return to school as soon as it’s safe, and hopefully, adherence to these AAP guidelines will help.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

A Teen’s Pandemic Perspective By Rhea Patney

‌T

he severity of the COVID-19 pandemic surprised me. A week before spring break, many people at school joked about how someone should “take one for the team” and get COVID-19 to extend the break. None of us thought March 12 would be that school year’s last day. On that day, the life I’d grown comfortable in shifted. All of a sudden, I couldn’t get within 6 feet of anyone I wasn’t living with, and I couldn’t enter a building without a face mask. Of course, I was lucky: I had the luxury of staying home. My parents – essential workers in the medical field – were not so lucky. My father is a nephrologist (a kidney specialist) at BJC HealthCare’s Memorial Hospital Belleville, and my mother is a pediatrician at SIHF Healthcare’s State Street Center in East St. Louis. My mother doesn’t see COVID-19 patients directly, but at one point, workers in her clinic were infected so she herself also had to be tested. My father does see COVID-19 patients directly

because he works with an older population. Although he doesn’t see them for COVID-19 specifically, his risk of exposure is still very high. When one of his colleagues tested positive for COVID-19, my father had to self-isolate from my family for two weeks. That was his second major exposure and COVID-19 test, and thankfully, the results were negative. Since the novel coronavirus hit, I’ve been scared for my parents every day. As much as I complained about online schooling and not seeing my friends, I was more worried about my father and mother’s risk of exposure. That concern for their safety has been on my mind constantly, and to get my thoughts off it, I’ve tried to focus on daily activities. I took care of my brother during the day, for example, and did extra chores. Also, my family changed houses, so our stress levels were high. Constantly being at home has been challenging, and I’ll always remember my everlasting fear of the unknown. Will my parents

come home sick? Will we physically go back to school this fall? Even while seemingly no one can answer such questions, I remain grateful for the hard work all frontline workers are doing to fight this coronavirus. My life might have changed, but they’re far more at risk each day. They certainly deserve appreciation, and when this pandemic ends, they will be the reason we as a nation made it through.

Back to School…

But How? By Brittany Nay

Metro area schools prepare for an acadeMic year different froM any other.

V

irtual lessons. Socially distanced classrooms. Face masks. As the new school year kicks off this month, metro area students, staff and parents are facing the new normal sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, from online learning to inperson instruction – at a safe distance. To ensure a secure, successful academic year for students, local education leaders are implementing a number of new measures. Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School in Ladue, for example, will offer online learning both on-campus and from home to accommodate every student’s needs. “While MICDS was able to pivot successfully to distance learning in the spring, we recognize that connecting with one another, albeit in masks and at a safe distance, is both educationally and developmentally more appropriate and is preferred by many of our students,” says Jay Rainey, the head of school. Every middle and upper school student will participate in their classes via online learning, and families will choose whether to send their students to campus or have them learn from home. To accomplish this, MICDS students and staff will begin each school day with a health screening, in accordance with St. Louis County Department of Public Health guidelines. “We will ask parents to administer a temperature check and complete a brief online medical questionnaire for each student as a condition of attendance,” Rainey says. The school’s facilities also have been adapted for social distancing. “We will avoid large-group gatherings and provide lunch service in classrooms to further reduce the likelihood of coronavirus contagion,” Rainey says. Following health department guidelines, all staff and students will be required to wear face masks except when eating or drinking, or for instances with young children when the risks of mishandling the mask do not outweigh the benefits of the mask, Rainey says, adding that frequent handwashing will be encouraged, hand sanitizer stations have been installed throughout the campus, and all buildings will be thoroughly disinfected at the end of each school day. At Chaminade College Preparatory School, all students will be welcomed back for in-person learning beginning Aug. 18, with an option to participate in online learning. For a safe school environment, students and staff will be required to pass an online health screening to start each day and must wear masks on campus, says the Rev. Ralph A. Siefert, S.M., the school’s president. “Students will be assigned entry times and specific entry points to the buildings,” he says. “Only students and staff will be allowed in buildings on campus during the school day.” In addition, social distancing will be enforced, and student movement throughout the building will be more intentional and controlled, Siefert says. “To prevent students from gathering in close proximity to one another,

lockers will not be available for use,” he explains, adding that students will eat lunch in a classroom setting to minimize exposure to large groups. A strong emphasis will be placed on hand hygiene throughout the day for both students and staff, while campus facility high-touch surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected regularly, Siefert says. “We anticipate reminders about mask wearing and social distancing will be necessary and have a plan to provide extra supervision and a robust signage program to assist,” he says. “We recognize that we must be nimble and able to adjust our plan as directed by local officials.” Following the results of a survey taken by more than 11,000 parents and staff, Parkway Schools across western St. Louis County initially planned to provide both virtual learning and in-school instruction. “Our plans are designed to be flexible, so we can quickly adjust as needed,” says Dr. Keith Marty, the district superintendent. As it turns out, just a few weeks after this announcement, that flexibility was key. “In order to help contain the spread of the virus, we simply cannot engage in face-to-face learning in a high-quality way under these updated health guidelines,” said Dr. Marty in a letter to families. “Additionally, current CDC guidelines state that schools should make decisions based on the level of virus transmission in the local community, which is currently at an alltime high. So per our Return to Learn plan, we need to switch to Distance Learning for all students.” The district plans to re-evaluate this plan prior to the end of the nineweek quarter on Oct. 23. Amid the pandemic, every school across the metro area has been facing the challenge of how to educate students safely and effectively, Rainey says. For many educational institutions, that means expanding learning – from socially distanced campuses to the homes of students and staff. “Thankfully, our proven technology infrastructure – including a one-to-one laptop program for students in grades five through 12 – allows us to continue our academic program regardless of where our students are learning,” Rainey says. “We like to say that our 100acre campus grew … to include desks at home, kitchen counters, dining room tables, couches and easy chairs!” Chaminade College Preparatory School, 425 S. However, even with the COVID-19 pandemic preventing such large, group events, The Gatesworth still creates an outstanding community on all levels. One of those levels is the high-quality food provided every day from award-winning chef Brian Hardy. “A healthy, well-balanced, fully customized diet is something every resident of The Gatesworth has always enjoyed,” Hardy explains.

The 2020 recipient of the Dr. L.J. Minor Chef Professionalism Award from St. Augustine, Florida’s distinguished American Culinary Federation, Hardy is passionate about providing the highest quality of food and service to The Gatesworth. “In many establishments, you’ll find processed food; that’s not our way at The Gatesworth,” he says. “We bring things in and do the work ourselves, [bringing in] fresh fruits and vegetables, [and] high-quality local ingredients. We do all our baking, butchering and brining in-house. We peel, blanche and prepare vegetables by hand. Most everything is

made from scratch. It’s not the easiest way, but it’s the best way to retain flavor and nutrients.” According to Hardy, the difference begins with the staff. The renowned kitchen staff members hold themselves to the highest standards, and nearly every individual who trains with The Gatesworth is a graduate of a culinary program or has gone through an apprenticeship, with some having even competed worldwide. Hardy knows that working for a senior living community means keeping up with a variety of dietary restrictions among residents, and he puts in the effort to give everyone the same opportunities for delicious meals. “My staff and I are like the personal chefs of each and every resident that lives here at The Gatesworth,” he explains. “Everyone is unique, so every diet we create is, too. From the moment I meet a new resident, I become a student of their tastes, likes, dislikes, health needs, dietary goals, etc. I want to know them completely, so I can provide them with the best nutrition, variety and taste possible.” These standards do not go unnoticed by the residents, many of whom have named the dining one of the first-class features of the community. “The food is always excellent here,” says resident Carol Max. “Chef Brian Hardy will cook to order for you if there is something special you would like, which he has done for me many times.” “Our residents provide the inspiration and sometimes even the recipes,” Hardy adds. “Our kitchen can prepare pretty much anything, and we love the challenge of trying to bring a resident’s beloved family recipe to life. It’s all about that personal touch.” While the current pandemic hasn’t made cooking in-house an easy job, either, Hardy and his staff are prepared to go the extra mile to keep residents safe and secure. As with the rest of The Gatesworth, the kitchen has seen enhanced measures being taken in order to observe social distancing

guidelines whenever possible. “We’re keeping surfaces sanitary, faces covered, and conducting regular temperature checks,” Hardy confirms. “And since our dining rooms are currently closed, we’ve made all room service complimentary.” At the end of the day, Hardy expresses his love for The Gatesworth and the opportunity his position has given him to connect with residents. “My favorite part of the job has nothing to do with food,” he concludes. “It’s the people I cook for. Their spirit, wisdom and joy – they make coming to work every day such a pleasure.” The Gatesworth, One McKnight Place, St. Louis, 314-993-0111, thegatesworth.com

ince 2017, St. Louis’ DIY darling, Arin Jura, has been sharing stunning IKEA hacks, upscale room renovations and more on her blog, Arin Solange at Home. And now, after being featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Jura is even more inspired to share her stunning ideas on her platforms. “That was literally the most amazing feeling ever,” says Jura of the venerable magazine’s piece that showcased her DIY wall-mounted art easel. “It was a DIY I had done to fit a need for our family, and I wanted to make it look good. So when Betters Homes & Gardens came to me, and that’s what they wanted to put in there, it was such an honor. I felt like it was such a cool experience to have something that I just felt like really embodied what I share to be in the magazine for the first time.” Jura started Arin Solange at Home to share her DIY hobby with friends and family; however, it quickly broke beyond her circle. “It started catching traction, and now, it has been such a joy to not just share for friends and family, but to really share these things I pour my heart and soul into for many other people,” Jura says. “I would definitely consider myself a lifestyle blogger with a heavy emphasis in DIY and home décor, but I blog about basically everything that makes a mom’s world go round.” Jura’s fave DIYs to this day are her IKEA BILLY bookcase built-in hack, in which she created a stunning office built-in with the company’s bookcases, as well as one for the nursery of her youngest daughter, Goldie. “Her nursery was such a perfect mix of IKEA hacks and DIYs with higher-end items to create such a unique space that has remained a place that makes me so happy every time I’m in it,” says Jura of the rainbow-themed nursery, which also features a stunning Serena & Lily hanging chair. “I love Serena & Lily – that’s probably my favorite

higher-end store.” However, Jura says she could never pull product from just one place. “I have to pull from other retailers to kind of make it fit my look,” Jura says. “I would consider myself on the more modern side, with some coastal vibes, but I am a firm believer that as long as you like it, it probably goes. I don’t think you have to follow one design aesthetic – and I definitely do not.” And based on her growing audience, it’s safe to say she’s found her feng shui. “I really feel like, for me, I just love putting myself out there,” Jura says. “I know I share a lot of my kids and family, but I love being noticed for the creative aspect and the DIY. … That tends to be where I find the most joy in this job.”

GROOMING & GLAMOUR

Color Us Debunked By Amanda Dahl Photo courtesy of Hair by Amanda Lux

‌Amanda Lux Wissman went from being “everyone’s go-to hair girl” in college to owning her own successful business, Hair by Amanda Lux. Housed in Jolie Salon in Frontenac, Lux specializes in natural-looking and lived-in hair color. Lux hosts a weekly online video program, Just a Tip Tuesdays, which streams on her social media channels, to teach and inspire people at home. “It was a way to connect on a different level,” she says. “Instead of covering complicated styling techniques, I get back to the basics and talk about topics a lot of clients are unfamiliar with.” Lux recently chatted with LN about common beauty myths and the truth behind them. Does stress turn your hair gray? Absolutely! I have seen stress do crazy things to people’s hair. Along with the increase in “sparkles,” I have seen hair loss. Mental health can have as much of an impact on one’s hair as [it does on] physical health. Can washing your hair daily be bad for it? It depends on your hair type. The oil your scalp produces is called sebum. The finer your hair, the more it produces. It can nourish your hair but is also what makes it feel greasy. If you have coarse hair, it is best to go longer between washes, [as] hair needs natural oils to feel soft and shiny. Buy a boar bristle brush, and brush the hair every morning to bring that oil from the scalp down to the ends. Finally, it is absolutely bad to wash daily if you are not using the proper shampoo and conditioner. It is best to get your products from your local salon. Does cutting your strands actually help them to grow? Put simply, no. However, there is a good reason this myth exists. We shed 50 to 100 hairs per day. If you never get a haircut, the ends [become] stringy. Hair also completely loses its shape over time. The best thing someone can do is to follow a healthy diet and take vitamins. I recommend long-haired clients get their hair cut every 10 to 12 weeks and short-haired clients

every 6 to 8 weeks. Is it better to air-dry your hair, rather than to blow-dry it? Heat is the biggest contributor to dry and damaged hair. It is often your blow dryer that is doing the most harm. A heat protectant [is] one

of the most important products someone should have in their arsenal.

iving in a homeless shelter or transitional housing means having few options for personal care products – especially if you’re a Black woman, says Heritage1933 founder Latoya Thompson. The St. Louis entrepreneur speaks from experience. As a child, she lived in shelters and realized that the donated bottles of shampoo aren’t one-size-fits-all. As a collegeeducated adult, she formed her beauty company to address this lack of resources and offer a confidence boost to women in shelters. “If we don’t feel like our hair is done correctly, we won’t go out into the public,” Thompson says. “We don’t feel beautiful enough to want to go out and attempt the [job] interview. These are maybe small barriers to others but very large barriers to an African American woman.” In her initial research, Thompson found that Black women want products that effectively moisturize their unique hair and skin. She acknowledges a positive shift taking place in some larger beauty companies, where diverse personal care products are becoming more mainstream. But she strives to be especially intentional as an African American woman making products for African American women. “Being intentional right now is so critical for Black entrepreneurship,” she adds. For every product Heritage1933 sells, a hair care product is donated to a shelter or nonprofit serving women and children. At least 3,000 products have been sold and matched in donations since Heritage1933 was founded in 2015, Thompson says. Up until this year, donations were made quarterly, but the pandemic has forced her team to reconfigure their process. Inspiration for Heritage1933 came from a variety of sources, including Thompson’s grandmother, ther, who was born in 1933. Thompson has a bachel elor’s degree in fashion merchandising from Clayton’s C Fontbonne University but studied social work before switching majors. o create something that’s “I knew I wanted to c d it able to help others, and i doesn’t necessarily have to be in a nonprofit form,” she explains. Through Heritage1933, Thompson has partnered with local nonprofits such as Gateway180. Kathy Connors, executive director of

Gateway180, says Thompson has visited the shelter to share her story with clients there and donate Heritage1933 products. “She also focused on the point that women experiencing homelessness should have the opportunity to look and feel their h best … to maintain their dignity,” Connors states in an email. s Thompson has set out to challenge the “narrow perception of beauty” that favors thin, white or light-skinned people. In five years of p business, Thompson says this bu stereotypical image of beauty has hardly changed. “I think this perception of beauty doesn’t really identify b with w the Black community,” Thompson says. “In general, [I want] wa to celebrate beauty as a Black woman.” Heritage1933 particularly embraces natural beauty and natural, nontoxic ingredients in its products, according to its website. Etinosa Ogbevoen, a community coordinator and lifestyle influencer in Austin, Texas, says she’d been looking for natural hair clip-in extensions when she discovered Heritage1933 on Instagram. She then bought its Fro Kinks Clip-Ins and O.M.G. Seal & Moisturizing Oil. “I would highly recommend the products that I’ve used,” Ogbevoen states in an email. “The oil is the perfect combination of a lot of nutrients that your hair needs to stay moisturized and hydrated. It smells wonderful and doesn’t weigh down my hair, which is a big win for me.” Clip-in extensions and this multifunctional face and hair oil have become customer favorites, Thompson says. In Ogbevoen’s experience, affordable natural hair clip-ins are hard to come by. “The Fro Kinks Clip-Ins are honestly my favorite,” she raves. “The hair quality is amazing, and it allows me to achieve hair styles that work best with natural hair textures.” Ogbevoens Ogbevoen’s appreciati appreciation for the brand goes beyond the products. She says the company’s charittable contributions and “the tribe mentality” first drew her to Heritage1933. e1933. “As an influencer, I tryy to t bring people together with my content, and the company alignss very v well with what I believe in,” she says. “I’m all about businesses findin ng a way to provide a service to the world but not forgetting about wherre they came from. It’s a small brand that is ngs.” consistently doing big thin Heritage1933’s product cts are currently sold through its online store Studio, Blissoma and The Spotted Pig. and in the metro area att Union U Thompson says she hopess to t expand her small business through wholesale ontinue to provide quality beauty products that opportunities and will “co shed light on melanin skin celebrating beauty.” Heritage1933, P.O. pecial occasions haven’t been put on hold by current events, and there’s nothing that will brighten a birthday or anniversary like a box from Genovese Jewelers. “Business has been great,” executive buyer Katie Kelly confirms. “A lot of weddings were [initially] on hold, but now people are doing smaller ceremonies, so we’re selling a lot of wedding bands and engagement rings. [And] with people spending less on vacation and travel right now, they are using that money to support local business.” The family-run jewelers reopened its store on May 19, with social distancing and mask-wearing mandates in place to keep customers safe as they look through the store’s expansive selection, including a wide array of stacking bracelets, rings and necklaces. “Everyone in fashion jewelry is stacking or layering,” Kelly says. “Be it bangles, rings or necklaces, everyone is intermixing now. There’s no

single perfect design to it, and that means everyone’s look is unique.” Stacking can play with different metals and colored stones to dress up a look or make it more casual. The trend also gives customers a way to bring new life to sentimental pieces, such as stacking to highlight an engagement ring. “You can buy one now, and then in a few months – for holidays or birthdays – you can add on to it,” Kelly says. “Stacking can be a gradual purchase.” Stacking rings and other layering jewelry will be some of the many pieces on sale at Genovese’s annual One Sale, running from Aug. 18 to 29. “The One Sale is pretty much our entire store,” Kelly says. “It’s the best of the best that you can get at our store, all on sale.” Genovese has also launched a Shopify account for those who don’t want to come into the store. The e-commerce platform is being loaded every day with new product and has no charge for shipping. “Our business is holding its own and growing; people still want to give that special something,” Kelly concludes. “It’s a trying time, and you want something to make you smile.” Genovese Jewelers, 12460 Olive Blvd., St. Louis, 314-878-6203, genovesejewelers.com

hở Long, one of the metro area’s most beloved spots for homestyle Vietnamese staples, now offers curbside pickup at both of its locations. The flagship opened in University City’s Jeffrey Plaza 14 years ago, with the second location launching in July 2019 in St. Louis’ South Grand neighborhood. Phở Long’s namesake noodle soups come from a 70-plus-year-old secret family recipe made famous in Cà Mau, a city at the southern tip of Vietnam. Off the Indochine-style menu, guests can choose from a detailed selection of appetizers, signature phở bò (beef) bowls, chicken soup noodle bowls, vegetarian options, rice platters and phở khô (dry noodles with various additions). Phở Long’s beef-based broth features a high concentration of stock, simmered and reduced overnight for savory depth. Guests can try the

signature soup in such dishes as phở dặc biệt, with a medley of thinly sliced rare eye of round steak, well-done brisket, tendon and meatballs. The dish also comes with beef oxtail, as phở con rồng. Another phở highlight is phở sườn rồng, which features a 16-ounce tender beef rib. Phở thịt bò ba chỉ features thick, tender beef belly slices seasoned and seared for a smoky finish. Hủ tiếu, another rice noodle soup option, features a clear, flavorful chicken broth. Also available is a vegetarian noodle soup, topped with tofu, vegetarian “meat,” broccoli and cauliflower. Rice platter options include bò lúc lắc (picturesquely translated as “shaking beef ”) with tender steak cubes, onions, spices, lettuce and tomatoes.

ART & SOUL

By Bryan A. Hollerbach Image courtesy of Judith Shaw

A

n almost daunting textural element pervades Common Ground, the work by Judith Shaw illustrated here, which graces a solo exhibition titled “fault lines” running at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild in Clayton from Friday, Aug. 14, through Sept. 12. Common Ground practically demands an interaction between sight and touch. The creation of the 38- by 108-inch behemoth, Shaw relates, involved “an unpredictable convergence of circumstances and conditions involving men and machines on a sprawling construction project surrounding my home in Clayton. The site was the source of angst and anguish for years – until I found a way to turn it into art.” Common Ground and related works in a yearlong project originated when, during a walk, Shaw “noticed tire tracks left on the pavement from the massive vehicles moving around the job site. I photographed the patterns and rhythmic designs, with a vision of capturing the imagery more vividly one day. I didn’t know how I would do this, but that didn’t stop me. … “After experimenting with different materials, I developed a method using tar paper as my backdrop. As soon as I saw how the marks embossed the black, gritty surface, I knew I’d hit upon my technique. As odd as it may seem, I do admit to having a fondness for tires. As a raw material, they’re earthy and gutsy and hold intense emotional and creative potential. …” Shaw continues with the background (at once absorbing and highly amusing) on Common Ground: “To test my latest idea, I went down to the construction site with rolls of tar paper tucked under my arms. I introduced myself to workers, explaining what I hoped to pull off.” In particular, she credits an especially amiable flagman at the site named Taylor. “When there was a lull in the action,” Shaw says, “Taylor and I would confer to find

opportune moments to pull a print. He signaled machine operators to drive over the paper after positioning it where I wanted on the tarmac. The interaction and results were thrilling. “Seeing these strapping workers navigate their mammoth machines with sensitivity and focus was deeply moving. They truly became partners in the art, approaching my printmaking with the same care and attention they paid to their own trades. Many seemed to enjoy the

lighthearted break in routine. We grew to appreciate and admire the artistry in each others’ work.” Shaw hails as gratifying “the spirit of collaboration, connection and camaraderie” of the project before concluding: “Through my eyes, the whole world becomes a sculptural tapestry and a medium for expressing the inexpressible. And through my artwork, I hope to instill a way of seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary.”

READY READERS

Beach Reads By Sheila Oliveri

A

lthough this year may well lack actual beach visits because of COVID-19, Ready Readers’ August book recommendation should rekindle fond memories of children’s past seashore seasons. That book, The Sandcastle That Lola Built, derives from a centuries-old British nursery rhyme and cumulative tale. In it, writer Megan Maynor and illustrator Kate Berube provide a fresh, modern story celebrating creativity, imagination, flexibility, friendship and support. The book, appropriately, opens with a blue sky and a sandy beach complete with lazily floating mermaid-shaped clouds. The actual narrative begins with the line “This is the sandcastle that Lola built” and proceeds by introducing problems generated by humans and the environment alike. The empowered titular protagonist responds to interruptions to her building by encouraging other children to involve

12161 Manchester Rd. Des Peres, MO 63131 [314]931-4000

themselves in fashioning an ever-changing architectural work of art. Featuring supporting characters charmingly called “Frisbee Dude,” “Little Guy” and “Minnesota Girl,” Maynor and Berube’s tale invites readers into a world imagined and ruled by children. Such readers follow the sandcastle’s construction from the solo creator through mishaps, additional engineers and ideas, and low-level natural “disasters.” In the end, Lola’s magical masterpiece comes to beautiful fruition through the group’s positive outlook, tenacity and resilience. Berube employs watercolor and collage, with other mixed-media elements, to create the colorful illustrations that advance the story. She also imbues the characters with individual traits and details that add visual interest and personality to the tale. The images of the burgeoning sandcastle clearly incorporate the

901 Highway K O’Fallon, MO 63366 [636]542-9092

intentions and efforts of all involved, whom readers see working both individually and collectively to bring it to life. Together, text and pictures marry to provide a delightful read-aloud experience for children and even entire families.

Walking the WALK

GETTY IMAGE

A new series of locAl tours seeks to help pArticipAnts heAr the footfAlls of history down the corridors of time.

I

’m pretty darn excited to be getting to work with MHS!” says Amanda Clark of her new berth as community tours manager with the Missouri Historical Society – and her excitement bubbles equally regarding the society’s recently launched See STL tours. “The new tours provide opportunities to uncover hidden histories, to gain context for how historic and current events collide and to hopefully see a new side of the city and its history,” Clark relates. “We don’t work off of scripts, so no two tours are the same – it all depends on what each group is interested in, and we like to have a little fun with our history. “In addition to the walking tours, we’re offering a lineup of virtual tours, as well. These are done through Zoom, but we work to re-create the experience of live tours with lots of dialogue and conversation as we move through the topic.” According to the society’s website, walking tours last two hours and cost $20 per person ($15 for society members). Virtual tours, meanwhile, last

roughly 90 minutes and cost $15 per person ($10 for society members). Tami Goldman, director of tourism and group sales for the society, explains the origin of the See STL tours in its extant, thriving tour program. “We had a never-ending list of ideas for new tours and an endless supply of stories to pull from St. Louis’ history,” Goldman says. “As we looked ahead at the 2020s, one of our goals was to develop a strategy for a new type of tour and to make those tours a reality. “We needed the right person to help us pull this off, and that person is Amanda Clark. The MHS team loved her enthusiasm and the unending joy she finds in presenting the tours. She loves – and needs – her stage. Amanda’s storytelling makes history come alive.” Clark – who previously founded the acclaimed Renegade STL tourgroup service and who also describes herself as an expert on French toast – positions the See STL tours as a perfect “social distancing-friendly” activity for the summer.

The new tours provide opportunities to uncover hidden histories, to gain context for how historic and current events collide and to hopefully see a new side of the city and its history.” – AMANDA CLARK

“We keep the group size very limited, so everyone can spread out,” shee says. “We require masks of both the attendees and the guides. They’re also all available as private tours, with the same pricing as public tours, so families can do them on their own with a guide if they’re uncomfortable in a mixed group. “This also goes for the virtual tours – they can be done as private tours with family members across the country that may be missing Ted Drewes and the Arch.” In and after late August, Clark also sketches what See STL participants, walking and virtual alike, can expect: “The program features several tours that will be part of the regular schedule, such as our ‘St. Louis History & Architecture 101’ tour, but it will also have an ever-changing lineup of new tours that connect to new exhibits and other programming at the [Missouri History Museum].” Madeline Reichmuth, the society’s public information officer, helpfully expands on Clark’s “ever-changing lineup” comment.

“Amanda will be offering three different tours that connect to the Missouri History Museum’s ‘Beyond the Ballot: St. Louis and Suffrage’ exhibit opening Aug. 1,” Reichmuth says. “These will be offered Saturdays in August, but will continue to be offered – not every Saturday, but on a rotating schedule – throughout the exhibit’s run.” In a centennial celebration, the exhibition and the tours alike pay tribute to the Aug. 18, 1920, ratification, after a long and arduous struggle, of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees all American women the right to vote. So history buffs, slip into your comfiest kicks and get ready to follow Clark’s high-energy lead across the local landscape and into the metro area’s past! t. Louis’ queen of color, Jessica Hitchcock, recently released a new collection of multihued creations that are sure to be a spectacle in any space. “I’m so excited for my new collection and enjoying the process,” Hitchcock says. “Doing my best to not overthink it and just enjoy playing with the colors.” Although Hitchcock picked up painting in high school, it wasn’t until she became the director of finance and human resources for nonprofit Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design in University City that she started creating again. “I think just being around all of the artists and all the creative juices that are flowing in a creative space like that kind of inspired me to pick up painting again, and that was in 2015,” Hitchcock says. “I kind of started visiting painting again, and from there, it has grown into the full-time business that it is now.” Hitchcock ultimately left her full-time finance gig in 2019 to pursue painting full time – a platform Hitchcock is similarly passionate about promoting. “When you are in school, everyone says, ‘Well, what do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to go to school for?’ – and I wanted to be a painter,” Hitchcock says. “There are a number of responses kind of like, ‘Oh, you don’t want to do that.’ Y’know, the whole starving artist template. So that kind of played into why I didn’t become an artist initially out of school. I loved business and accounting, which was kind of weird, but I think then finding my voice again in the arts and knowing especially how the landscape has changed so much, there is so much opportunity there for artists.”

To aid in this effort, Hitchcock hosts a free Facebook group for artists, The Creative Business Convo, and also offers online art business courses that assist artists in pricing their work, setting and achieving financial goals, generating buzz about their business and more. “We have all been told these stories about the starving artists, and I want to empower other people and other artists with anything I’ve learned with growing my business or really encouraging them to be consistent and show up and share sliceof-life moments so they can connect with you and your work,” she continues. “I’m really just passionate about empowering other artists to really step into their passion, their calling, and know it can be a profitable thing.” In addition to Hitchcock’s new collection, she is delighted to discuss her new studio space in St. Charles. “My [current] studio is in my apartment, which I love and enjoy, but a lot of people, businesses and my collectors want to see the commission work being done, and some people just want to drop by the studio to see what I’m working on, but since it’s in my home, it’s not as much of an open door,” Hitchcock says. “That is exciting so people can visit the [new] studio.” Hitchcock encourages those interested in a visit to email her at info@jessicahitchcock.org. “I’ll probably be moving in mid-August, and I’d like to work on a new collection and kinda take everyone along with me,” Hitchcock says. “It is a big stepping stone in my business that I’ve wanted so long.” LadueNews.com | august 14, 2020
