Foundedin1913,themissionoftheAmericanCancerSocietyis toimprovethelivesofpeoplewithcancerand theirfamiliesthroughadvocacy,research,and patientsupport.Morethan100yearslater,the organizationhashelpedcontributetothe29 percentdropintheoverallcancerdeathratein theUnitedStates.

However,thereisalwaysmoreworkthatcan bedone.

“Over290thousandpeoplewerediagnosed withbreastcancerthisyear,”saysKylene Blumeyer,2023PinkChampionandheadofthe society’sMakingStridesmovement.“Theseare mothers,sisters,fathersandfriends.Theseare peopleeveryoneknows.”

ThisconnectioniswhatinspiredKyleneBlumeyertogetinvolvedwith theAmericanCancerSocietyMakingStridesMovement.

“Myhusbandhasbeenapartofthesocietyandchairingtheirgalafor yearsandtheyaskedmetobeapartofitthisyear,”shesays.“Weallhave afriendwhohascancerandwe’veallreachedoutandsaid‘Ifyouneed anythingletmeknow.’It’saveryhelplesspositiontobeinandIwanted tohelp.It’saneasywaytogetinvolved.”

TheMakingStridesmovementisacelebrationofbreastcancerpatients, survivors,thrivers,andcaregivers.Themovementwilltakeplaceon October21atUnionStation.Therearethreewaysyoucansupport:signup atmakingstrideswalk.org/stlouismotoleadateam,joinanexistingteamor participatesolo;recruitfriendsandfamilytoparticipate;andfundraising throughsocialmedia.

WithoutOpenSpaceSTL’sannual OperationCleanStreamprogram, theMeramecRiverwouldn’tbe thebeautifulnaturalresourcewe enjoytoday.Eachyear,OperationCleanStream pullsoutmorethan1,000tiresfromtheriverand reversesthedamagedonebyflooding,careless litteringandunlawfuldumping.

“Unfortunately,trashwillcontinuetobea probleminourwaterways,”executivedirector BonnieHarpersays.“There’salotofthingspeople candotohelppreventthat,butwe’regoingto continuetobeoutthereasanorganizationwith ourvolunteersmakingsurethattheriverisasafe andcleanplaceforpeopletoenjoyandforour wildlifetohaveaniceplacetolive.”OpenSpace STLhasbeenkeepingthislegacyalivefor56years. OperationCleanStreamhasbeeninoperation since1967–justtwoyearsafterOpenSpaceSTL wasfoundedin1965.OnAug.26thisyear,more than1,000volunteerswilltaketotheMeramecby boat,canoeandkayakortacklethesurrounding parksandtrailsonfoot.Together,they’llcover300 milesoftheriveranditstributaries.Depending

onthesite,volunteerscaneitherbringtheirown boatingvesseloruseoneprovidedbyOpenSpace STL.Astheyfloatdowntheriver,volunteers collecttrashandkeepitintheirvessels.Once theyreachthedesignatedtakeout,they’lldump thetrashatcollectionpointssetupbyOpen SpaceSTL,whomakessurethatallofthewasteis disposedofproperly.

Attheendoftheday,thefuncontinueswith afestivalatthecentrallylocatedGreentreePark inKirkwood,whichallvolunteersareinvitedto. Theeventisfilledwithfood,educationalexhibits andprizes.Kidsareencouragedtoparticipatein educationalactivitiesandthevolunteereffort.

“Wewantpeopletounderstandthatwe’reall inthistogether,”Harpersays.“We’reallworking togetheronthisdaytocleanuptheriverandwe hopeeverybodyhasareallyfuntime.Weknow it’salotofhardworkandit’shot,buthopefully everybodyrealizesthatit’sabsolutelyworthit.”

Theteamworkelementextendsevenfurther beyondtheday’svolunteerefforts:OpenSpace STL’scommunitypartnersplayabigpartin OperationCleanStream.MissouriStreamTeam providesallthetrashbagsandglovesfortheevent andhelpstrainsiteleaderswholeadtheteamsof

volunteers;GreatRiversGreenwayhelpsfacilitate cleanupalongthetrailsthatlinetheriver;andthe MetropolitanSt.LouisSewerDistrictconnects OpenSpaceSTLwithmunicipalitiesalongthe watershedthatprovideheavyequipmentfor loadingtrashintodumpstersandhelpshredand recycledumpedtires.

“It’sreallygrowninscaleandcomplexity, butit’sworking.We’vemadesomuchprogress comparedtowhat[theriver]usedtolooklike.”

InJune2023,theprestigious institutionannounceditrenamedandrevamped UniversityCollegeatWashingtonUniversityin St.LouisastheSchoolofContinuing&Professional Studies.Alongwiththisnamechangecomesa revitalizedcommitmenttoinstructingadultsof allages–andbackgrounds–through“focused degreesandcustomprograms“thathelpstudents succeedintheSt.Louisjobmarket.

“Whatwefoundisthatthereisaneedfor adulteducationcurriculum,”CAPSDeanSean Armstrongsays.“Aneedtofillthegapsfor professionalstudentsandforstudentswhowant togetintoaspecificfield.Theseareindividuals whomayhavebeenworkingforfive,six,seven yearsorlonger,andtheywanttocomeback. That’stheagerangewewanttoimpact.”

CAPSschoolleadersjoinedwithlocal employerstodevelopeducationprogramsthatfit theneedsoftheSt.Louiseconomyandputthe approximately1,150studentsintohigh-paying jobsupongraduation.Asaresult,initialprogram offeringsfocusonrapidlygrowingfieldslikedata, healthcareandmanagement.

Thepre-nursingprogramisaprimeexample oftheCAPSapproach:Ithelpslearnersprepare toenternursingprogramsandwasdevelopedin partnershipwiththeGoldfarbSchoolofNursing atBarnes-JewishCollege.Theschooloffersa rangeofoptionsforcontinuingeducation,from certificatestodegreeprograms,allrepresenting a“trueWashUeducation”inthatcourseworkis challengingandstandardsarehigh.Eachprogram isdesignedtofittheneedsofadultlearners,with approximatelyhalfofallclasseshostedonline.

“Ourstudentsupportmodelisacoaching model;it’sthehow-to,”Armstrongsays.“For peoplereturningtoschoolafter20years,they

maynotfeellikecomingback.Theymaynot knowhowtobalancefamilylife,workand school.Howthey’reabletobalancethosethings iswhereoursupportsystemcomesintohelp. There’salsoacareer-coachingcomponenttoit aswell,includingresume-writing,job-searching andmore.”

“Theoverallconceptbehindtheworkstarted about10yearsago,”Guilaksays.Teammembers bringexpertiseinbioengineering,biomaterialsand rheumatology.FundedbytheNationalInstitutesof HealthandShrinersChildren’s,theteamrecently publishedtheirworkindevelopinga“hydrogel encapsulationofgenome-engineeredstemcells.”

Thestemcellssenseinflammationinthebody, whichcausesthepainandswellingassociated withrheumatoidarthritis,aconditioninwhich thebody’simmunesystemattackstissuesin

thejointsandotherorgans.Althoughjointsare typicallymostseverelyaffected,thediseasecan alsocausefatigue,depression,visionproblems andotherissues.

“Thecellsaredesignedtosenseoneofthe primarymoleculesthatdrivesarthritispainand inflammation,calledinterleukin1(orIL-1),”Guilak explains.“Inotherstudies,wehavedesignedcells thatsenseotherkeyinflammatorymolecules,such astumornecrosisfactor.”

WhenthestemcellsrecognizeIL-1,they releaseamoleculethatinhibitstheinflammatory response.Themoleculeitselfisan“IL-1receptor antagonist,”decreasinginflammationthroughthe samebiologicpathwayusedbythedrugAnakinra, oneofthecurrenttreatmentsforRA.Anakinra,a bioengineeredproteinversionofanIL-1receptor antagonist,mustbeinjecteddaily.Thestemcell versioncouldlastmuchlongerwithasingledose –buttheresearchershadtodeterminehowto deliverthecellssotheywouldn’tbedestroyedin thebody.Theanswer:agelrodthatencapsulates thecellsandprotectsthemformonths.Therods wouldbeimplantedundertheskinusinganeedle,

wherethecellscoulddotheirwork.

“Thismethodcouldbeusedandadaptedfora widerangeofautoimmunediseases,suchastypes ofjuvenilearthritis,inflammatoryboweldiseases likeCrohn’sdiseaseorinflammatoryskindiseases suchaspsoriasis,”Guilaksays.“Manyofthese diseaseshavecommondriverssuchasinterleukin 1ortumornecrosisfactor,whichistheprimary targetofmanyautoimmunetherapies.”Guilakand histeamarestilltestingtheefficacyandsafetyof theimplantsinanimalmodelsandhopetobegin humantrialswithinfiveyears.

“Wefeelthisisarevolutionarynewconcept inhowwecantreatanumberofdiseasesinthe future,”headds.“Whilethereisstillagreatdeal ofdevelopmentlefttodo,thistypeoftechnology couldpotentiallybeusedtotreatawiderangeof diseasessuchasdiabetes,osteoporosisorother conditionswherethebodyisnotresponding properlytomaintaintheproperbalanceof hormonesandbiochemicals.” ln

“IbuiltButterLoveonthatstreet,”Wilderness says.“Thatcommunityissuchanimportantpart ofthegrowthofmycompany.Itfeltlikehome.”

DeliDivineislocatedinsideDelmarDivINe,a mixed-usedevelopmentthatispartofficespace andpartresidences.“Bothsidesoftheproject aregearedtowardsnonprofitsandsocialservices thatworkonthenorthsideofSt.Louis,”Fosterling explains.“ForBHG,itwasaconsciousdecision tomoveintothatlocation;BenandMaxinehada similarmissionwhenitcametointroducingmore foodandsocialspacesintothenorthside,and it’sinanareathatwasoncetheomphalosforthe Jewishpopulationintheearly20thcentury.”

“Shalom”invibrantneonwelcomesguests attheentranceofthedeli,whichfeatures bold,contrastingclassiccolorsthatreflecta mid-centuryaesthetic.Décorincludesvintage photographs,drawingsbyBen’schildrenand lovingknickknackscontributedbytheBHGcrew Onceinside,guestscanchoosefromabagelmenu orasandwichmenu.

“It’samash-upofadelicatessenandan appetizingstore,”Fosterlingsays,explainingthat traditionally,thebagelshopandthesliceddeli meatsandwichshopwouldbeseparateentities, butthattheywantedtobringthebestofitall togetherinoneplace.“Thecounterislinedwith DrBrown’sandchipsandamilliondifferent pastriesandsweets,mostofwhichwemakeinhouse,andweholleroutyournamewhenyour foodisready,”shesays.

Themenusweredevelopedoverthecourseof severalyearsusingfirsthandresearchconducted duringtripstoNewYorkCitydelisandappetizing storestosampledifferentbagels,lox,delimeatand sodas.“Wewantedwhatweofferedtobeambitious andall-encompassing,andbecauseofthat,wehave threemenus,”Fosterlingsays.“We’vegotitemsthat werejustobviouslygoingtobepopularlikeabagel withlox,acornedbeefsandwich,chickenandegg salad,butyou’llalsofinditemslesspopularor knowntotheaverageAmerican,likekneidlachand kreplachsoup,gefiltefish,kishkeandnoodlekugel.”

Thebagelcounterfeaturessixtypesofbagels andabialytochoosefromwithaboutadozen differentcuredfishordelisaladitemsavailableas add-onssuchasstandardlox,sablefish,tunasalad andchoppedliver.Anappetizingmenuoffersthose sameitems,plusdelimeatsandpicklessoldby weight.At10:30a.m.,alunchmenuisavailableand includeshotandcoldsandwiches,salads,soups,

BlissfullyPoppedPopcornopenedat 7318ManchesterRoadinJune,offering sweetandsavorypopcorninclassic,gourmetand St.Louis-inspiredflavors–allpersonallypoppedby ownerJaneeCawthon.

“I’vebeenmakingpopcornontopofthestove, andmymomandgrandmapoppedpopcornonthe stove,aslongasIcanremember,”Cawthonsays.

Theentrepreneur’slatestventurepoppedinto herheadfiveyearsagowhileshewasrunningan event-planningbusiness.“Aclientwashavinga bridalshowerandIwasdoingcandy,dessertand funfoodbuffets,”sheexplains.“Forthecandytable forthebridalshower,Iputchocolateonpopcorn anditwasabighit.”

Aone-womanshow,Cawthonstartedpopping popcornoutofherbasementin2019.“Ilearnedhow tocolorandcaramelizepopcornandmakedifferent flavors,andImadefavorbagsforeverythingfrom babyshowerstoweddings,”shesays.

Asherpopcorn’spopularitygrew,Cawthon decidedtolaunchBlissfullyPopped’sfirstbrickand-mortarestablishment.“Icallitaboutique–it’s verycute,intimateandpink,whichismyfavorite color,andverywelcomingandbright,”shesays.“It’s alotoffun.”

TiffarnishLewis spentherchildhood intheair,soaring onthehigh-flying trapezeand performingwith theSt.LouisArches. Now,35yearslater, she’stakingher careertonewheights as CircusHarmony’s boardpresident.

Asachild,TiffarnishLewisjuggled,unicycledand soaredthehigh-flyingtrapezewithCircusHarmony’s youthperformancetroupe,St.LouisArches.Thirty-five yearslater,theformerflyingchildisthenewlyelected presidentoftheboardofdirectorsofCircusHarmony, St.Louis’onlysocialcircusschool,whichusestheteachingand performingofcircusartstomotivatesocialchange.

Lewiswasfirstdrawntothe high-flyinglifewhenshewasjust4 yearsold.“IusedtowatchOlympic gymnastslikeNadiaCom˘aneciback intheearly’80s,andIfellinlovewith gymnastics,”shesays.“Iwouldgetin troubleforflippingaroundthehouse.”

Butheracrobaticsdidn’tgether introubleforlong.In1986,Lewis’ motherallowedhertojoinatumbling class–andin1988,whenJessica HentofffoundedtheSt.LouisArches andvisitedLewis’elementaryschool, the6-year-oldtookherblossoming tumblingtalentstothetroupe.There, Lewisaddedcircustrickstoher repertoire.Shelearnedhowtojuggle, rideaunicycle,dodoublecartwheels, buildpyramids,flytrapezeandexcelin acrobatics.Thegroupwentontothrill audienceswithshowsthroughoutthe metroareaandaroundthecountry.

By2001,HentoffcreatedCircus Harmony,anonprofitexpanding circusartsofferingstomoreSt.Louis youth.Today,theartistic/executive directorisexcitedtohaveaformerstudentleaditsboard.“Circus islikeafamily,”Hentoffnotes.“So,itmakesperfectsenseforachild fromourfamilytogrowupandtakealeadershiprolethatwillhelp thegenerationscomingupbehindher.Tiffarnishknowsthepower ofwhatwedofrompersonalexperience,andthatmakesheragreat ambassadorandadvocate,aswellasboardpresident.”

TeamingupwithHentoffonceagain,LewiswillassistinCircus Harmony’smissiontochangelivesbyhelpingmorechildrenlearnto defygravity,soarwithconfidenceandleapoversocialbarriers.

coordinatorfortheCommunityDevelopmentAdministrationofthe CityofSt.Louis.

ACircusHarmonyboardmembersince2016,Lewis’roleas thenewboardpresidentwillseeherleadingitsfocusondiversity. “Diversityisnotjustcolor–it’salsoabilitiesofpeople,”shesays, notingitallstartswithimplementingamorediverseboard.“Iwant tohelpJessicamaketheprogrammorediverse–toofferittomore diversekids.”

Fromleadershipandproblem-solving toplanningandstrategizing,theskills taughtintheorganization’ssocialcircus classescanbeappliedtoeverydaylife. “Youcan’tjustdoapyramid,”Lewisadds. ”Youhavetohaveaplanandastrategy tomakesureyourfoundationissturdyso thateverythingyoubuildontopofthatis goingtobeokay.”

Thisyear,CircusHarmonylaunched DefyGravity101–aprogramfocusedon teachingcircusandtumblingclassesin sevenSt.LouisCityrecreationcenters. Notably,ninechildrentraveledtotheSt. LouissistercityofStuttgartinGermany tocontinuetheorganization’sPeace ThroughPyramidspartnershipwith CircusCirculi.

“IperformedwithCircusHarmony aroundthecountry–nowthey’vebeen aroundtheworldandhaveveryfamous alumni,”Lewisnotes,addingthatoneof thehighlightsofherchildhoodwasthe firsttimeshetraveledoutsidethemetro areawiththeSt.LouisArchestoperform inCharleston,SouthCarolina,attherenownedSpoletoFestival.

Nowleadingtheprograminwhichsheonceparticipated,Lewis saysshelovessharingherpassionwithasmanykidsaspossible.“It feelsreally,reallygoodtohelpaprogramIoncewasin,”shesays, addingthatthreeofherownchildrenalsospenttimeintheprogram. “TherearepeopleinSt.LouiswhohaveneverheardofCircusHarmony, soIwanttoputitanditsprogramouttheretothemasses.”
