EDITOR ‌IN TODAY’S WORLD OF EVER-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND 24-hour news cycles, current events and breaking news surround us. Unfortunately, a majority of the notifications vibrating our wrists, dinging our phones or popping up on our computers are not positive, even if many of them are important. And although news is in our name, I like to think the stories in Ladue News provide a break from the not-so-good news that can cloud our weeks. This week, LN contributing writer Brittany Nay shares the touching story of Anna Blair, a local actress, singer and teacher who is undergoing her second battle with cancer. Although cancer is never good news, Nay thoughtfully shares Blair’s life work and proves that with passion comes hope. “None of us knows how much time we have,” Blair says in the profile on p. 72. “What we need to decide is how we want to live the life we have now.” We hope Blair’s story inspires you to really live life to the fullest and be grateful for each day. Elsewhere in this week’s edition, debonair LN staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach shares the story of Larry Hughes, a retired NBA basketball player who is now devoting his efforts to children both on and off the court. “Basketball is just a vehicle that we use to get kids excited,” Hughes says in the story on p. 62. “And then we use basketball to teach them how life will turn them upside-down – if they let it.” We hope this story inspires you to use your talents toward the greater good, just like Larry. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

he name might ring a bell. The face may look familiar. With his signature cigar in hand, Travis Noble, attorney at law, makes a big impression. The defense attorney developed an impressive reputation for his high success rate of overturning cases related to driving while intoxicated (DWI). Before he became a recognizable personality in the media and abroad, though, Noble started out on a very different path – by putting criminals away. He spent 10 years on the police force, even moving up to narcotics, before deciding to change career paths. “I really didn’t choose [my specialty]. It chose me,” Noble explains. “When I got out of law school, the firm I’m with now offered me a job right away and let me start trying cases.” After several immediate wins, he made quite the impression on the firm and soon earned partnership at Sindel, Sindel & Noble. “People criticize me for representing those committing a crime. Truth is, this is what really separates our country from others. We can challenge those who say somebody has [perpetrated] a crime,” he claims. His effective courtroom approach certainly can be intimidating to law enforcement, but Noble’s relationship with the police and prosecutors ultimately is an affirming one. “I recently spoke to the police academy, [which is something I do often]. I told them, ‘My job is to make sure you do your job.’ I tell them how they can do things better and how I win my cases [against them],” he says. “It just so happens I win a lot more than I lose.” He is not afraid to go to court, often able to overturn cases deemed unwinnable. From drunken confessors to seven-time repeat offenders, Noble tackles them all and often ends up victorious, even in the case of vehicular manslaughter.

“A lot of lawyers get very nervous when going into the courtroom. For me, it’s kind of my escape,” he shares. “I’ve tried somewhere around 36 cases in the last two years. So it helps that I [go into the courtroom] more than most. It’s simply part of my regular schedule, going in every couple of weeks.” In his last 36 cases, Noble has achieved 32 “not guilty” verdicts. Noble describes a hard work ethic as the true foundation for his monumental success rate. “I tell young lawyers all the time that the best way to build a business in the legal realm is to work hard for your clients,” he says. “Bust your butt, and the business will come. As with any other business, if you put out a good product, you will build a [successful] business.” An award-winning attorney, Noble can lay claim to legal experience bar none. It’s clear, though, that another reason exists for his success in law: He’s truly passionate about it. “People say I need a hobby, but I don’t have the time. I love what I do. I love to try cases,” he says. Noble thrives in an atmosphere that would make most people squirm. His dedication to correcting the flaws in the judicial system keeps him motivated. “If we had a circumstance where it was just the police and prosecutors – and no defense bar to make sure the government follows the law and respects people’s rights – then we’d no longer be a [proper democracy],” he says. Outside of the courtroom, family keeps him centered. “When I’m not in court, I’m with my kids. I have two beautiful daughters, [whom] I focus on, and four dogs. I’m a big dog fan,” he shares. So while his hard-earned reputation may leave some daunted, at the end of the day, Noble simply wants to spend time with the ones he loves while savoring a cigar. he McGhee Polo Field at Spirit Valley Farms in Chesterfield enjoyed a beautiful day for great polo as Gateway to Hope held its second annual Charity Polo Match. Gateway to Hope helps secure financial assistance for individuals in need diagnosed with or at high risk for developing breast cancer. The first ball was thrown out by breast cancer patients riding in classic cars as the match got underway. Some guests enjoyed food and drink under the VIP tent while others tailgated along the field. Drinks were available as well as a food truck. In the end the MidAmerica Logistics team was able to pull off a half-point win over PVG and Sons Land and Cattle Company team. LANDSCAPE

‌T

he view out the hotel window showed the misty mountains of Yunnan, China, and a street lined with gingko trees and purple smoke bushes – both native there. A trip to Kunming for a conference and several field trips to nature reserves renewed an appreciation of the wonderful Chinese plants found in American gardens. While abroad, we admired spiky mahonias and silky anemones growing wild between the tea plantations, as well as fabulous aroids – including the famous stinking lily and magnificent elephant ears – growing under the cloud forest canopy. Rhododendrons also abounded, and the slopes were lacy with elegant, emerald-green veils of selaginella. One of our best late-season perennials lives in the wild here, too. Blooming along the bright, but shaded, forest edges are Tricyrtis, known in English by the ugly, made-up tag of toad lily – a common name attributed to a fake story from the Philippines that should be exchanged. Something more apt would be Chinese amethyst lily, for its refreshing cream and rich, purplespotted flowers that sparkle in the dappled sunlight. Compared to exotic orchids in beauty and texture, it’s perfectly hardy in our locale and fits well in the semishaded borders of Ladue gardens. One of the few fresh flowers for the heat of sultry summer days, its bloom begins this month and continues to frost. More than 20 species can be found in the wild, from Nepal in the west through southern China and east to Taiwan and the Philippines. (A favorite species of one of the columnists: Tricyrtis raveni, named in honor of husband Peter Raven.) Our most common garden type is the reliable Tricyrtis hirta. The Japanese have raised amethyst lily cultivation to great heights, and many of our best cultivars originated there. Most of these lilies have white, cream or yellow flowers with amethyst-purple or bronze spotting. Variegated or golden foliage on selected cultivars, some with colored speckling or streaks, adds interest when the plants aren’t blooming. Several species are not hardy for us, though, so take note of winter ratings before ordering species native to Taiwan or the Philippines. The popularity of this genus grew dramatically in the 1990s because of greater availability and lower production costs with tissue-culture propagation. The Chicago Botanical Garden plant evaluation program identified the best choices for upper Midwest gardens; it recommends the Taiwanese species formosana and Japanese cultivar ‘Miyazaki’. Plant amethyst lilies with hostas or heucheras in shady areas with amended organic soils. They prefer well-drained but consistently moist spots. Irrigated beds are best, as they keep the foliage from browning in the summer, but winter mortality occurs if they sit in wet soil during the dark months. Don’t expect much in the first year, but in time, large clumps will form. To see some magnificent mature specimens, visit the Kemper Center borders at the Missouri Botanical Garden from now until frost. About half a dozen wellestablished selections are being grown there. Once you see this exotic beauty in flower, you’ll want to get some amethyst lilies for your own garden!

Interior designer Joni Spear specializes in helping recent transplants to St. Louis find and design dream homes.

I

magine a city you’ve visited once or twice. You might remember the airport, perhaps a place you ate. You recall the vibe you got from your walk between the conference center and your hotel. Maybe you can even name a street or two. Now imagine having to move there – immediately. What do you do? If you’re moving to St. Louis, you might call Joni Spear. Joni Spear is, among other things, a relocation specialist. She is also an award-winning interior designer, the owner of Joni Spear Interior Design, a mother of three and a St. Louis transplant. “When I relocated to St. Louis in 2000, I had a difficult time establishing myself as a designer,” she says. “I had no connections to people or the social circuit … [so] I worked smaller jobs and accepted anything that was presented to me.” She explains that by 2011, the slump in the economy was too much, and the chance of finding traditional design work was slim. In an attempt to stand out, she made a change: She found a specialty. She met with a relocation director who worked with local real estate agents to fill a void in the market. After several conversations, Spear decided to shift her focus. “That’s when I decided to target my audience as a relocation specialist,” Spear says. “Having been transplanted myself, I know how difficult it is to move to a new city and not have any connections. Everyone wants a beautiful home, but if you don’t know where to shop or how to go about it, the task can be quite daunting.” Spear describes her style as classic with an edge – bold, colorful and unexpected, noting she likes taking her clients out of their comfort zones. “So often clients get anxious and worry about what other people will say,” she says. “I try to educate them that their house is a reflection of themselves. If they love something, then that is all that matters.” Spear also offers a range of design services apart from relocation. Although most of her work is residential, Spear notes that she’s designed commercial spaces, as well, including a manufacturing facility. “So, essentially I can do anything!” she says. She mentions boutique hotels as a project she’d like to tackle in the future. However, her favorite space to design is often one of the smallest. “Most people travel and like to stay

in nice hotels with beautiful bathrooms – when they return home, they long for that same feeling of being on vacation,” Spear explains. “Yes, large rooms are great, but as a designer, I can really put my signature on a bathroom.” She notes crystal accents as a glam option for bathrooms, from the obvious places like light fixtures to the unusual, such as the top of the sink plug. Much like her transition into relocation-design services, her journey into interiors as a whole happened in a roundabout way. “When I graduated high school as a first-generation Catholic Italian, I was not expected to go to college,” Spear says, noting that this gave her no idea of what to study when she defied expectations and enrolled. “After I had completed my core requirements, I thought about taking a class in architecture. As it happened, the class was only opened to interior design majors. Voilà! I declared my major, and the rest was history.” She began working in the field after graduation in 1987 and opened her own business in Michigan in 1995. Among her many accolades, Spear has been a Best of Houzz winner for the past five consecutive years, beginning in 2012; Houzz, a Pinterest-like home-design site, explains this award as “honor[ing] the professionals behind the most popular photos” on the site that year. “Most people are only exposed to what they see in the furniture stores or mail-order catalogs – they want the chairs to match the tables or the dresser to match the bed,” Spear says. “I don’t work like that; I want every project to be unique. I don’t want my projects to look like the neighbor’s house.” She also has been highlighted by HGTV on its website. These national nods clearly haven’t gone to her head, as Spear quickly switches the topic from fame to family. “I work hard – I have three children, one in high school and two in college, [and] my philosophy has always been that my family comes first,” she says. “As a single parent, trying to juggle all of their activities and satisfy clients is exhausting. I try not to dwell on awards, [and] instead try to do the best job possible. I am very honest with my clients and do my best to meet their needs, and in the end, it pays off.” Joni Spear Interior Design, 314-614-9080, jonispear.com LadueNews.com | auguSt 19, 2016

Beauty Buzz

Fake It, Don’t Bake It

‌A

lthough we know exposure to the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays can damage our skin, most of us still continue to take part in outdoor activities in hopes of achieving a gorgeous glow. Luckily for those who wish to be bronzed sans the sun, numerous products on the market can help us achieve the look of a glowing goddess. Options include spray or airbrush tans, or self-tanners in the form of a mousse, lotion or, again, spray – all of which can be used at home. Regardless of which of those options you choose, though, you should know how to prep your skin before you tan – and doing so involves just a few simple steps: Exfoliate! To ensure your tan lasts, exfoliate. If you don’t scrub off dead skin, neither a spray tan nor a selftanner will apply evenly. Use an exfoliating body scrub

or an exfoliating glove/mitt to scrub your body. Make sure to scrub your elbows, knees and ankles carefully, as those areas tend to be very dry. After exfoliating your body and face, you may notice a more radiant look from that step alone. Removing dead skin makes a difference in not only the look, but also the feel of your skin. Also, along with exfoliating, shave your legs before you tan, to avoid needlessly removing a layer of your tan and to achieve a smoother, more-even application of the tan. Skip moisturizer. Although you may routinely moisturize your face and body after a shower, skip that before you self-tan. Moisturizer creates a barrier that prevents the tanning product from soaking into your skin the way it needs to. Apply the tanning product. Whether at the salon for a spray tan or in your own home for self-

By Kimmie Gotch

application, evenly apply whichever tanning product you selected. Then wait six to eight hours after application before you shower again to give the tan plenty of time to develop on your skin. Shower and moisturize. Once your tan has set, shower again, refraining from the use of any exfoliants. Use a gentle, oil-free body wash, as oils can strip your tan. Also, use a very mild soap while you have your tan. Once you’ve showered, it’s finally time to moisturize. To keep your tan for a whole week, try to moisturize every day after showering; moisturizer will help lock in your tan, and it also will help it fade more evenly over time. Repeat the steps. Unfortunately, faux tans last only about a week, so if you want to keep your beautiful glow all summer long, repeat the previous steps whenever necessary.

W

hen it comes to the big day, brides and grooms want a wedding that runs smoothly so they can focus on each other and all those who have gathered to celebrate. With companies like Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe, ensuring absolute perfection on a couple’s wedding day is top priority. David Bovier, who took ownership of the store from Miesner in May, has more than 30 years of experience in the floral business and is committed to keeping the shop true to Miesner’s original concept. A huge part of that is striving to be consistently perfect and to anticipate all of the customers’ needs on their big day. “That’s a hallmark of Ken, and we will honor that tradition of excellence,” he says. On their wedding day, Bovier says customers can expect the absolute highest quality and best designs. In the company’s process, the staff members listen to what the bride and groom are looking for and interpret their personal taste through the event. “Everything is custom. We don’t do cookie-cutter, and we don’t repeat designs,” he says. The process of picking the perfect floral arrangements begins with an initial meeting to go over ideas and venues. From there, Bovier and his

50

team interpret the bride and groom’s vision into flowers. He says although the company does a lot of traditional-type flowers, their interpretation is “more elegant, more stylized and more lush” than run-ofthe-mill shops are able to do. “We’re a full-service shop,” he says. “If you hire us for your wedding day, that’s the only event we handle on that day. You get full attention. We’ll decorate the church, lay the aisle runner and gather arrangements to move to the reception. We’ll send the bride down the aisle and do everything from cleanup to pickup if necessary.” Oftentimes, a Ken Miesner’s staffer will stay throughout the wedding, pinning on boutonnieres and corsages and being on hand to help if need be. Bovier says he wants his clients to know that weddings are important to him personally. “I love weddings. I love the whole event. I’m committed to making it as lovely as I can for every bride and groom,” he says. “It’s one of the most important days of their life, and I want everything to be as special as they are.” To learn more, call 314-567-6650, or visit the shop at 9723 Clayton Road. introducing the NEWLYWEDS

Kat McCarter & Tony Wright

By Amanda Dahl

‌K

atherine (Kat) Jane McCarter and Anthony (Tony) James Wright met in the sixth grade. “Marriage wasn’t on my mind then, but I thought Kat was cute and fun,” Tony shares. It wasn’t until freshmen year at Parkway North that the two started a relationship, which endured through their Mizzou days. Tony moved back to St. Louis, after taking a job in Kentucky post-college, and the two finally started their life together when they purchased a house in Glendale. “After 11 years of dating, she definitely earned [marriage] and much more,” he says. Tony had to get creative when it came to the proposal. “I popped the question on a Monday while we walked our ‘calm’ puppy, Walker [Texas Ranger]. Kat thought it was a joke,” he says. “Once she figured out it [was real], Kat replied, ‘Yes! What took you so long?!’ Her sisters hid in the bushes to take pictures while both families [prepared] to pop Champagne at our house. It was a Monday night for the books.” Seeking an outdoor affair with flair, the couple settled on a familiar site in Forest Park for their big day. “The World’s Fair Pavilion is a blank slate. Our vision took form as a big outdoor celebration, with every detail giving the pavilion a whimsical ‘midsummer’s night dream’ ambiance,” Kat says. From a custom watercolor bar, W-shaped lemon-drop ice luge and personalized Wright puns found throughout, fantastical details set the scene. “My father walked me down the aisle to the boy I have loved since I was 15. [A] best friend sang Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ while my beautiful bridesmaids shed tears of joy and Tony [grinned] like a fool,” Kat recalls. Kat cites getting ready in her childhood home, hearing her father’s speech and enjoying her sisters’ amazing musical toast – which “should be the standard for all maids of honors” – as highlights of the wedding day. “We always will be able to visit the World’s Fair Pavilion and reminisce on our wedding day,” she smiles.

The C Suite BUSINESS NOTES Ten Essential Abilities for Success

By Charlotte VM Ottley

‌“Education gives us a portion of the knowledge needed to succeed. Work experience gives us enhanced knowledge to put to practice what education has taught us. Life teaches us valuable lessons that make us question our knowledge and previous experiences. Yet skills at navigating what we have learned and experienced inevitably ensure our success.” –An Ottley-ism Degrees and certificates are not the only measure of one’s ability to succeed. Other elements like life experiences, market demand, leadership and expectation all play a role. However, in addition to learned skills, 10 essential abilities will privilege one level of success over another: 1. Accessibility:  How easy is it for people to contact you? Publish or establish a schedule to let others know the best way to reach you. 2. Accountability:  Accept responsibility for your tasks, while being held accountable for the results. Employers not only expect this, but also respect it.

3. Adaptability:  Change is inevitable. Being flexible and willing to compromise is best without sacrificing your integrity or your voice. 4. Believability:  Sales are based on people trusting your knowledge of your product or service. They must believe you have integrity – a priceless attribute. 5. Support:  Your leaders’ success hinges on their ability to trust you. They need to rely on you to give honest and straightforward answers even when such answers go against theirs. They deserve your respect and loyalty. There’s no gain in their being wrong and your being right. Good leaders surround themselves with experts in their areas, and factor their thoughts into final decisions. Give your best to help ensure overall success. 6. Communication:  Consider and decide what the best form of communication is to make your point. Sometimes more than one means is necessary. Whatever you choose, make it accurate, concise and meaningful. 7. Faith:  Belief that we have a higher purpose that fuels us.

8. Forgiveness:  Many projects and businesses have failed because of power plays and deceptions. Sometimes being unwilling to actually work with a co-worker can damage or derail the success of what can work for everyone. Always evaluate the big picture, look beyond the obstacles and work to succeed with the highest integrity, while playing to win. 9. Rebound:  We all face defeats and disappointments. When you do so, pause if you must, express yourself, and then get back on track. 10. Sustainability:  Sustainability requires staying on course through good times and bad. Success is fickle. You have to love an endeavor enough to go the distance.

The importance of tracing assets in divorce St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Tracing separate property in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage through their hard work and labor. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed together — or commingled as we would say in the legal industry. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts prior to marriage argues, predictabil58   August 19, 2016 | LadueNews.com

ity, that the pre-marital portion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. This argument is a good one in most cases. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties will need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determinate amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage.

In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies and other assets where a party might have built up cash value prior to marriage. Of course, in some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted prior to getting marriage to ensure the protection of these assets. n the first few pages of Ladue News, the Meet Our Contributors section asks writers and others a question. A few weeks ago, I was asked, “If you could write any LN column other than your own, which would you pick?” I replied, more or less, “I would write restaurant reviews because our favorite family activity is going to restaurants.” As I discussed this response with my family, we concluded that going out is fun, but the time together is what we really enjoy. Having dinner with the family, at a restaurant or at home, is not about food; it’s about conversation. This conversation leads to benefits that extend well beyond suppertime. Research indicates that families that eat regular meals together have kids who are less likely to use tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Such kids also are more likely to engage in school, make healthy life choices and have fewer emotional problems. Dinnertime talk can sometimes lead to serious discussions, but the topics should generally focus on the highlights of the day – a joke, say, or a mutual topic of interest. Regular meals also create a sense of security and togetherness. A consistent evening ritual provides respite in a busy day and structure in a busy week. Dinner provides a chance to put stress aside. It also allows families to have healthy communication that promotes bonding. Life is busy, and many feel it can be difficult to coordinate a mandatory mealtime. Having dinner three times per week seems like a realistic goal. More would be better, but less would be detrimental. Meals don’t have to be fancy, and a weekend breakfast or a trip to

the ice cream shop also can be an acceptable substitute – because togetherness remains the goal. Parents should create a warm environment that promotes positive conversation. As busy as our family is, my wife finds a way to get us all to the table. So put down the smartphone, turn off the TV and engage with your family.

Former NBA star Larry Hughes is shooting to support local youths not only on the basketball court, but also in the classroom and the community.

62   August 19, 2016 | LadueNews.com

A

t 6 feet 5 inches, Larry Hughes towers the better part of a head above the average American male – which could prove useful, given the giant task he’s set himself. Since 2013, Hughes, now retired after 14 years in the NBA, has been captaining the d1 Basketball Academy, a visionary effort about which he declares, “We’re supporting kids on and off the court.” On the court, of course, he boasts impressive credentials. After playing basketball at Christian Brothers College High School, Hughes led Saint Louis University’s Billikens to an NCAA tournament in the 1997-98 season. He then played with nine NBA teams, eventually retiring from the Orlando Magic in 2012. Hughes, though, quickly emphasizes that his academy’s focus transcends air balls and alley oops, dribbles and dunks, fast breaks and floaters. rather, he says, the academy’s personnel focus on “having conversations with the youth in our space today, having them understand their community involvement, their home involvement and their school involvement are very important to their sports success.” At the risk of shocking benchwarmers and ball hogs alike, Hughes and his team envision something beyond polished hardwood, glinting backboards and Air Jordans. “Basketball is just a vehicle that we use to get kids excited,” he confesses. “And then we use basketball to

teach them how life will turn them upside-down – if they let it.” The roots of that confession extend backward in time, not just beyond his NBA career and his year with the Billikens, but to his hoopin’-it-up days at Christian Brothers. “This is something that I feel I would have benefited from when I was coming up,” Hughes says. He and his high-school peeps, Hughes continues, “weren’t ‘involved’ … in any sort of skill development. We were coming up and playing basketball, playing sports, with a lot of that done in the schoolyard or the playground. “And we just kind of learned things on the fly. We learned bad habits, and obviously, it’s tough to break bad habits. So with the academy, we’re trying to teach good habits.” Although it began with just two teams, the academy nowadays comprises more than three dozen, who take part in one-hour evening “Skills & drills” sessions involving neither a set minimum starting age nor a capped age. “We’re going from, 2½ years ago, having 20 kids to now having about 335 kids,” Hughes says. “That’s a huge chunk. That’s huge growth for our program, and we just want to continue to grow it.” For that continued growth, he sketches goals shortterm and long-term alike, picturing “a facility that will house three to four basketball courts and offer a training component … And I think that’s going to push

LadueNews.com | August 2016 LadueNews.com | August 19,19, 2016    6363

us to a whole ’nother level, having the home base, having the facility and also having the ability to plant seeds in other areas of the city and Missouri – whether that be Illinois, whether that be southwest Missouri. Those are our longterm goals: to continually grow.” Make no mistake, though, that the academy’s goals for itself and its young charges will constitute easy points in the paint. “We don’t want to shatter any kid’s dreams as far as making it to the NBA, but we do want to give them the information that relates to the chances and the larry hughes odds of kids in general making it to the highest level of basketball,” Hughes says. “If you’re going to do good in school, take that to the highest level. You could be a general manager. You could be a head trainer. You could be the president of a team and still have your fix of basketball without actually playing the game.” Despite its pragmatism, though, a current of idealism electrifies his academy’s purposeful inclusiveness. That inclusiveness, Hughes says, embraces “not just our privileged and our families that can afford the skill development a chance to come in and learn basketball, but also our families that are not so well-off and suffer from economic challenges to have the ability to participate in what we’re doing.” The academy’s inclusiveness incorporates – for now – outreach to nine area schools and involves half a dozen coaches: Pat Brown, Austin Gardner, Jarrell Graham, Deaarron Henderson, Marcus Robinson Payne and Charles Woods. Following a coaching “boot camp,” Hughes notes, each of those six men must hew to only the highest standards: “He’s gonna do whatever it takes for that kid or for that child or for that family to succeed.” Success, in Hughes’ estimation, self-evidently surpasses mere points and rebounds. Metaphorically, he and his coaches have palmed the rock and are essaying a classic run and gun, in hopes, in certain cases, of turning a prayer into a rainbow – and a buzzer beater. “Paying attention, being a good student, knowing how to work well with others, supporting your community – all these things that we teach in the program really work well once school starts,” Hughes says, adding that he and his coaches also counsel attendees about bullying both in person and in cyberspace. “Once kids are starting back to school, parents are looking for more of a routine. Kids are looking for more of a routine.” From the figurative jump ball to the final tick of the clock, Hughes reinforces that he, his coaches and the academy in general regard youthful enrollees as central to their efforts. “We definitely cater to your ability,” Hughes assures academicians and potential academicians regarding on-court matters. “This is not a select academy. This is not an academy where your skills have to be a thousand times better than another kid your age. This is a program that’s for you. It’s tailored for you. You can move at your pace.” Yet off-court matters, inevitably, remain paramount to Hughes and his coaches. “We’re having huddle discussions before and after our skillsdevelopment sessions to talk to kids about what they’re doing in school, what their weekends are like, what type of people they like to be around, what’s their environment, how can we be better, how can we better support them,” Hughes says. “Really expressing that it’s an open door. Because some children, they come through the door, they just need to have a conversation.”

Basketball is just a vehicle that we use to get kids excited.

n top of the Weber Grill Restaurant, which softly opened in the Saint Louis Galleria in March, a bright red decoy of the iconic Weber charcoal grill demonstrates the brand’s namesake. Executive chef Tim Eagan estimates that the mammoth kettle would be able to cook around 400 burgers at once – if it was actually functional. The actual grilling power that Eagan packs, however, proves equally impressive. Seven 36-inch, custom stainless steel kettle grills are at the core of the restaurant’s arsenal of cooking equipment, with another 40 charcoal and gas grills of all retail Weber varieties in the concept’s demonstration kitchen. Eagan, a St. Louis native, joined Weber after a storied career in the culinary world – from operating Chicago-style hot dog carts to Benton Park’s Park West Grille to most recently acting as the executive chef

of the DoubleTree conference center in Chesterfield. Eagan works with Weber Grill Restaurant’s corporate chef, Larry Donahue, to translate the longstanding brand to his own hometown. Weber Grill founder George Stephen invented the charcoal kettle grill in 1951, going on to open the first Weber Grill Restaurant in Wheeling, Illinois, in 1989. St. Louis is the fifth location of the restaurant owned by the Stephen family, following branches in Indianapolis and Chicago. The 9,000-square-foot space was previously home to BlackFinn American Grille, with seats available for around 200 guests. Unlike any of its national counterparts, the Richmond Heights restaurant is connected to an extensive grilling academy that boasts separate locations in Germany, Canada and Singapore. “Our cooking school offers diners the opportunity to see chefs cook on Weber grills and use Weber

products,” Eagan says. “We actually teach you how to cook the recipes we cook in the restaurant and even provide the recipes.” Courses in the grilling academy include everything from introductions to charcoal and gas grilling, steaks and burgers, to crash courses in advanced techniques such as smoking. The space also will be home to interactive meals as well as tasting dinners. From the restaurant, patrons will find a range of lunch and dinner options to choose from. “There’s something for everyone. We have burgers, a ton of vegetarian options and a lot of gluten-free friendly options,” Eagan says. “Steaks are some of our most popular sellers, and we offer a bunch of different seafood varieties. We cook the pizza on the grill as well, and then, of course, there’s the barbecue that we’re known for.” The menu mirrors the selection at Weber Grill

Restaurant’s other locations, beginning with appetizers including chili, baby back ribs and a wood-fired crabcake. Salads include options such as the Mediterranean grilled-vegetable salad with mixed greens, asparagus, artichokes, roasted peppers, cherry tomatoes, shaved red onion, Kalamata olives, feta, pepperoncini, herbed pita croutons and white-balsamic vinaigrette. Backyard-style barbecue options include beef brisket, meatloaf and grill-roasted half chickens. A variety of sandwiches, burgers and steaks follow, along with a list of entrées. Choose from a New York strip steak sandwich, plank-grilled bourbon salmon, grilled Margherita pizza and more. Look for local touches including pork steak, smoky gooey-butter cake and more in the future. Ultimately, it seems like the perfect place to dine before catching Insight Theatre Company’s Inherit the Wind.

‌Story:  When Bert Cates, a high school biology teacher in the town of Hillsboro in the rural South circa 1925, includes a section on evolution in his class, he finds himself accused of violating the Butler Act, a state law that prohibits public school teachers from teaching evolution rather than creationism. Cates doesn’t pose much threat to the sheriff, who lets Cates casually meet his girlfriend, Rachel Brown, in the courtroom adjacent to the jail. Brown wants Cates to recant his teachings to ease the pressure from her father, the Rev. Jeremiah Brown, and other townsfolk who are up in arms about Cates’ “heresy.” Cates stands steadfast, though, and receives the financial support of the Baltimore Herald, which sends its notorious reporter, E.K. Hornbeck, to cover his trial. It’s such a big case that the prosecution is led by the legendary Matthew Harrison Brady, a three-time presidential nominee, while the defense is headed by famous defense attorney Henry Drummond. Although the judge believes the case is a straightforward debate about adherence to a state law, Drummond warns that it concerns the ability and right of an individual to think on her/his own, regardless of societal pressures. There’s much more at stake than a high school biology class in a small town “not too long ago.” Highlights:  Insight Theatre Company closes its 2016 season with a superior production of this drama, written in 1955, that still resonates in today’s fractious political environment. Excellent performances by John Contini as Drummond and Alan Knoll as Brady, as well as the studied direction by Sydnie Grosberg Ronga, make this version of Inherit the Wind compelling and richly rewarding theater. Other Info:  Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee based their drama on the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925 that took place in Tennessee. That historic case resulted in Scopes’ conviction for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, which ran counter to a state law. Scopes was defended by legendary defense attorney Clarence Darrow, while the prosecution was led by populist American politician and attorney William Jennings Bryan, who ran unsuccessfully for president three times in his illustrious career. The trial was a cause célèbre and covered by many newspapers, including the Baltimore Sun, which sent well-known reporter H.L. (Henry Louis) Mencken (not Menkin, as spelled in Ronga’s director’s notes) to the event. Although Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized version of the Monkey Trial, it was written during the Sen. Joseph McCarthy witch-hunt era of the 1950s, in which McCarthy conducted a reign of terror, accusing a wide variety of individuals of being communists. Lawrence and Lee’s play addresses such hysteria against the backdrop of an earlier era. It continues to resonate in the current presidential campaign.

Scenic designer Kyra Bishop’s set paints an evocative portrait of 1920s America in the hinterlands, with a storefront at stage right, a courtroom at the center and steps at the front that hint of an outdoor beyond the county courthouse. Contini and Knoll are equally savvy in their portrayals. Contini’s Drummond is the more sympathetic character. He also gets to the heart of the story when asking whether Cates understands the gravity of his particular trial for more such cases in the future. Knoll superbly plays up the grandstanding love of attention craved by Brady, accepting offers of food and drink from his adoring fans, while making his prosecution more of a barnstorming speech than a studied preparation for the trial. There are references in the drama to the previously warm relationship between the two old antagonists, accentuated in a telling scene when they share a quiet park bench at the end of the day. Jason Contini captures the cool, detached bravado of Hornbeck, quick with a witty comment to people whom he realizes don’t understand his cynical brand of humor and whom he plays as fools to his “superior” intellect. Pete Winfrey is ideally cast as the well-intentioned Cates, the least likely candidate to be a rabble-rouser, and plays well opposite Sigrid Wise as Cates’ girlfriend and fellow teacher Brown. Wise conveys Brown’s love for Cates, as well as her concerns that he seek forgiveness rather than fight. Inherit the Wind enjoyed success not only on Broadway, but also as an Academy Award-winning film and several televised versions with big-name casts. Insight Theatre Company’s rendition adds another star to that illustrious constellation.

Anna Blair teaches 6- and 7-year-old children during Sing, Dance, Act, a weeklong COCA arts camp held in July at Whitfield School in Creve Coeur.

Local actress, singer and teacher Anna Blair stars onstage even while fighting her second battle with cancer.

A

t just 8 years old, Anna Blair was imitating the acting of Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind, and as she grew up, she delighted her family mimicking the voices of legendary singers like Barbra streisand, Judy Garland, sandi Patty and Linda eder. A fiery passion to be a performer always burned inside of her. Today, the st. Louis native, who grew up going to The Repertory Theatre of st. Louis, has lived out her dream of starring on that stage – and stages throughout the city and beyond. But a recent recurrence of cancer has threatened to close the curtain on Blair’s 27-year career. Thirteen years ago, the local actress, singer and teacher was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, and it recently metastasized to her lungs. With the new diagnosis, the stresses of her first bout with the life-threatening disease came flooding back: a mastectomy, chemotherapy, losing her hair. But Blair is not alone. When she announced her second battle on social media – this time with stage 4 cancer – the st. Louis arts community quickly rallied around her and launched a GoFundMe campaign. Dubbed “out Damned Cancer out!” – an homage

Blair credits performing with helping her through the most difficult times in her life, including her battles with cancer. she says the production of Romance/Romance on the Goldenrod showboat helped her put a marital separation into perspective. And when she was performing in the World War II-era musical Swingtime Canteen, her mother died. “I had to sing a song in that show that had the lyrics, ‘Like an angel watching o’er me,’” Blair recalls. “As difficult as it was to sing those words, they allowed me to visualize that my mom would always be with me.” Then, when Blair was in rehearsal for Annie Get Your Gun with the Hawthorne Players in Florissant, she received her first cancer diagnosis. “The director asked me if she should recast, and I begged her not to,” Blair says. “The cast in that show became family to me. That show saved me from sitting at home asking, ‘Why me?’” The show opened three weeks after Blair’s mastectomy and one week into her chemotherapy. “I kept telling myself that Annie oakley didn’t have cancer,” she says. “so while I was performing, I didn’t have cancer.” so despite the disease, not only has the show gone on for Blair, but also she says she’s used the experience as a reminder to live out her bucket list every day. “none of us knows how much time we have,” she says. “What we need to decide is how we want to live the life that we have now.” For her part, Blair has gone skydiving; sung the national anthem at a st. Louis Blues

game; taken trapeze lessons; visited London, Paris and California wine country; and performed at The Muny and The Rep – the two places she and her mother always dreamed she would appear. “Unfortunately, she didn’t get to see me,” Blair says. “But I did it, Mom!” This summer and fall, Blair is continuing her fiveyear run as Patsy Cline, as well as her 12-year stint as a backup singer, in Memories of Elvis, appearing on southern Illinois and st. Louis-area stages, including a performance on Aug. 27 at Blueberry Hill. And dates and locations soon will be scheduled for Blair’s Helen Reddy cabaret show, I Am Reddy, Hear Me Roar. Because, as any born performer like Blair knows, the show must go on. annablair.com Editor’s Note: To donate to Anna Blair’s fight against cancer, visit gofundme.com/annablair.

to shakespeare – the effort is what campaign coordinator John Farrimond describes as “both a message of hope and an urgent call to action.” Just three months into the open-ended campaign, it already has surpassed $30,000 on the way to its $50,000 goal to help with Blair’s treatment. Blair says it’s hugely meaningful that the hometown arts community that influenced her career in the field is stepping up with such support and generosity. From a young age, Blair was immersed in the arts. she learned to sight-read music as she sang while her mother played the piano; picked up her first show tune, “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from My Fair Lady, from her sixth-grade teacher, Tom Bookstaver; and developed vocal control and vibrato from her junior-high choir teacher, sally Herman. she went on to study at Missouri state University under acting mentor Howard orms (who also was actor John Goodman’s mentor). It all prepared her for what has become an almost 30-year professional acting career, with notable st. Louis performances including Mrs. eynsford-Hill in My Fair Lady and Cinderella’s Mother in Into the Woods, both during the 2015 season at The Muny; Banquo in Macbeth with The Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Co.; olivia in Twelfth Night, emilia in Othello and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, all during the shakespeare Festival st. Louis’ educational Tour; and the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods and Reno sweeney in Anything Goes on the Goldenrod showboat, a century-plus-old entertainment vessel that traveled along or was stationed on Midwestern rivers until last year.
