EDITOR I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT MY PASSIONS AND HOBBIES run the gamut. As of late, though, I’ve been completely engulfed with interior design and home décor. I mean, with all the gorgeous products on the market right now, how can you not be? And my new obsession ties beautifully into this week’s Abode feature. Story Seven, a home décor and gifts boutique in Webster Groves, was founded by three stay-at-home moms who were ready to reinvent themselves. As seen (and beautifully shared by LN contributing writer Brittany Nay) starting on p. 21, Story Seven is full of “hidden treasures” the owners found while combing through local shops and national trade shows. We hope you enjoy learning more about this shop and visit it soon! Also in this week’s edition, be sure to check out the sassy Style feature by LN contributing writer Mary Mack featuring Sissy + Snap! Sissy + Snap is a fun venture created by mother-daughter duo Angela and Audrey Cross, who produce fun bags with snap-on accessories that are absolutely adorable. Be sure to check out the story, starting on p. 30. All the best,

A
n oasis is arriving in Frontenac. Life Time, the ultimate athletic lifestyle resort, is preparing to open its doors later this year, welcoming the St. Louis community to experience a new standard of living. “Our vision is to [nurture] a healthy way of life,” says general manager Sebastian Cender. “We have 144 destinations and 1.5 million members. Every detail of [the Frontenac] resort is coming from our members’ perspectives. We’re putting that feedback into our location.” From a robust fitness studio schedule to deluxe amenities, Life Time seeks to be the place to exercise, linger and lounge. “This is not what you think of when you hear a new ‘gym’ is opening,” stresses Natalie Bushaw, senior director of public relations and internal communications. “It’s a visual experience. Team members build relationships with you. We really put care into the details.” Working out won’t look the same, not with boutique studios offering sculpt, barre and cycle classes, plus more. Luxury locker rooms feature walnut lockers and private showers, with frosted glass doors and toiletries. Cender believes the indoor-outdoor pool will be a big draw. “It’s absolutely gorgeous, with cabanas, an outdoor café, two massive waterslides,” he describes. “And inside, a lap pool and family pool.” There is something for the whole family at Life Time. Children can visit Kids Academy, where learning and moving studios keep them engaged. “Our Kids Academy gurus are phenomenal leaders who help kids to develop healthy lifetime

habits,” Bushaw describes. “Many have a master’s [degree] in education, some have been on Broadway and some have even made it to the Olympics.” Meanwhile, members can make their way to the second floor, which is entirely devoted to fitness. The LifeCafé offers delectable light eats and the LifeSpa invites members in for deluxe pampering. Couples can also take advantage of Parents Night Out, which encourages families to drop off their children at Kids Academy and then head off-site for a date. A founding member of the first Life Time location, Bushaw has developed many friendships with other members, whom, decades later, are still involved with the athletic club. Cender joined the Life Time community at age 16 and experienced a similar phenomenon. “My best friends all come from Life Time,” the now 34-year-old shares. “Life Time is more than a fitness club; it brings people together. A member moved [to St. Louis] four years ago and had no friends. Now, she’s become part of the community through Life Time.” “To have this beautiful destination in this location gives people the opportunity to see our brand come to life,” Cender adds. At its heart, Life Time seeks to give the community at-large a place to elevate one’s way of living. So, don’t just wish you were here – join in. TROPIC GALA

Photos and story by Christina Kling-Garrett
he Saint Louis Art Museum’s Tropic gala recently transformed the museum into a Polynesian paradise. After musicians greeted them, guests enjoyed diverse island cuisine, tropical cocktails and the music of St. Luau. The museum then treated them to a special viewing of its newest exhibition, “Paul Gauguin: The Art of Invention.” Later in the evening came a performance of several traditional island dances, including a fire dance, before the guests themselves danced the night away on the terrace. Co-chairing the event were Robert Lowery, Melissa and Rob Merlin, Stephanie and Keith Williamson and Mark Utterback, with Centene as the event’s presenting sponsor.

LAVISHLY LAS VEGAS

W
hen one nightlife-loving couple, who enjoy semifrequent Vegas vacations, hired Jessie D. Miller Interior Design to spruce up their midcenturymodern master bath, Miller’s vision for a ’70s penthouse glam vibe was all the inspiration the clients needed. After removing a nonfunctioning steam shower, “horrendous” carpeting and builder-grade cabinetry, lighting and tile, the agency’s namesake took to transforming the space into a showstopper: from a full-slab marble backsplash to custom cabinetry to custom flooring laid out in a three-angled pattern of her own design that stretched from the floor to the tub deck and up to the floating vanity on the wall. “My unofficial formula for mixing patterns is you need a large-scale graphic, a small-scale graphic and an organic pattern,” Miller says. Miller’s challenges with the renovation were endless, but the final product made the lengthy project more than worth it. “I would love to do more built-in tubs with fabulous applied finishes to them,” she notes, citing the functional aspects of the tub decks, variety in fixture selection and cost-saving benefits to built-in tubs as reasons she wishes clients would request them more. “Be relentless in your pursuit on these renovations because they can be quite taxing,” Miller says. “Being willing to wait an additional amount of time for something, if you have that luxury, with an investment like your kitchen or master bathroom is worth the wait.”

A trio of stylish local moms is opening a sui generis home and gift boutique in Webster Groves.
T
hree area mothers with three distinct styles are penning a new chapter in their own collective story – with the launch of a home décor store to help tell your story. Story Seven, a home décor and gift boutique opening Sat., Aug. 24, in downtown Webster Groves, offers a mix of traditional, transitional and vintage products. The shop’s grand opening celebration, beginning at 10 a.m., will welcome customers with everything from refreshments to raffles. Co-owners Melanie Bennett, Sarah Jozwiakowski and Karen Drexler founded the business based on their shared belief that home is where your story begins. “We want customers to find pieces for their home and themselves to help tell their story,” Jozwiakowski says. The unique boutique takes its name not only from its street address, 7 N. Gore Ave., but also from its three owners’ stories – they have seven kids among them, and they want to help others share special stories. The trio’s tales first intertwined while they were raising their kids and teaching Sunday school. Once upon a time, Bennett worked for the Charter Club home and apparel brand, Jozwiakowski served as a school nurse and a nurse at SSM

Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and Drexler was a high school business teacher who also started a small business, Little Mimi Designs, with her grandmother. “We all had careers before we were stay-at-home moms,” Drexler says. “Now, it’s a great time to reinvent ourselves and share our gifts in different ways.” The friends’ great eye for home and design led to their next chapter: Story Seven. And when it came to choosing a home for the décor store, the team felt the beautiful, historic and walkable Webster Groves neighborhood had just the right storybook charm for that next chapter. “It doesn’t have our kind of store already, so we thought it was something that was missing in Webster Groves,” Drexler says. The stay-at-home-moms-turned-entrepreneurs searched near and far – combing both local shops and national trade shows – for “hidden treasures” to stock Story Seven, Bennett says: “Every week, you will find something a little different.” Among the new boutique’s offerings are likeminded companies with their own unique stories to tell, such as Mer-Sea out of Lenexa, Kansas, Bennett says. “We met the owners in Las Vegas and love their story: ‘At Mer-Sea, we think life
should be simple … like life at the beach,’” she says. “We carry their travel wraps, candles, and bath and body products.” Story Seven also loves to keep it local, carrying area-made Tru Candle Studio hand-poured soy candles, CC’s Notes personalized stationery, Ruby Lou Handmade Bags and art by St. Louisan Stephanie Halpin Kolman, as well as Missouri-made Pickwick & Co. Candles of Kansas City and One Canoe Two hand-painted stationery from Fulton. The store also strives to stock unique finds from across the country, such as actress Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James brand of Southernstyle home accessories, Gabby transitional furniture and lighting, Coast & Cotton printed custom flour sack towels, Hester and Cook gorgeously crafted tabletop wares and Glenda Gies Designs “old Hollywood glamour” handbags. Additionally, the shop carries jewelry, including enewton’s current, classic and timeless gold-filled pieces, Designs by Raya’s colorful vintage vinyl line and Pearly Girls’ bracelets and necklaces, showcasing classic pearls and modern charms. As Story Seven pens its first pages, the co-owners want customers to feel at home – hence, the boutique’s cozy atmosphere, complete
with a comfy seating area where customers can gather to catch up. “We hope customers will be able to relax in our gathering space and find inspiration for their home,” Jozwiakowski says. The co-owners also are excited the store allows them to share their love of gift-giving. “There are so many lunch gathering spots in Webster Groves, so you can stop in before you meet your girlfriend for a birthday lunch, and we can help you find a special gift,” Drexler says. Whether a visitor is looking for a gift for a girlfriend, mother-in-law or hostess, the shop offers treasures at different price points so everyone can pick the perfect present – or find something that helps bring a personal story to life, Bennett says: “We’re really happy to be part of the Webster Groves community and excited to meet our new customers.” Story Seven, 7 N. hen Lisa Dolan founded LARK Skin Co. in 2016, the company’s mission was clean and simple – skin care for the minimalist. Today, the natural wellness brand is answering a larger purpose: to build women up via an industry that seems to inadvertently tear women down. LARK’s storefront, which opened in 2018, offers holistic skin care consultations and treatments. It was during these consultations that co-owner Allie Schweitzer noticed a troubling theme with the societal approach to beauty. “Customers would come in almost broken or at a point where they were like, ‘I don’t know what to do; I need help,’” Schweitzer says. “And while, absolutely, we have the products and the ingredients to help them, it almost went deeper than that.” This concern is very personal for the team. “Lisa and I both have stories where we’ve been affected by the beauty industry and feeling as if we’re not enough,” Schweitzer says. “I grew up with acne, Lisa has rosacea, and we both have poured hundreds into products that are going to ‘fix’ our flaws. It’s time that we use our voice to let people know you should embrace your uniqueness, use natural products that are good for you and enhance your natural beauty.” From this mindset, as well as a prophetic dream Dolan had in April, the Campaign for Confidence project was born. Dolan and Schweitzer gathered 11 local women who inspire them and their community to share their stories on LARK’s digital and social platforms, with the belief that confidence is contagious. “Each of these 11 women, in the different industries, age groups, ethnicities, etc. that they are in, have created a space for vulnerability and connection, and it is our hope that through their stories, others will be able to build this road toward confidence and embrace their vulnerability as well,” Schweitzer says. These women were not the only ones to have moved Schweitzer and Dolan to pursue this mission. Schweitzer notes that her mother, who struggled with body image issues, taught her the beauty of imperfection. Dolan’s mother, who fought and beat three types of cancer before relapsing and dying in 2016, inspired the entire LARK brand. “I carry my mother’s legacy and spirit with me in everything I do, and I channel her strength when times get hard,” Dolan shares on her website.
The irony that a beauty company is challenging the messaging of its own industry is not lost on the duo. “I don’t think any of these companies are capitalizing, per se, on women’s insecurities, but they’re definitely not helping,” Schweitzer says. “Speaking kindly to yourself is the best kind of self-care, and it’s also the hardest form of self-care.” Others seem to agree with these ideals, as within just a few days, the campaign received almost 100 submissions of other women’s stories. “We have gotten a huge outpouring of support from other local, womenowned businesses and influencers all the way from LA
to New York City, who have also taken part,” Schweitzer says. “Each story is equally as amazing and emotional.” This won’t be the end of LARK’s goal to empower St. Louis women – Dolan and Schweitzer already have other campaigns in the works. “We don’t know what the future of LARK holds,” Schweitzer says. “We know it’s going to be big, we know that it’s going to make a splash, and we think that this is just the beginning.”

ne recent Tuesday morning, Audrey Cross is feeling a little sore and tired. She’s currently in the middle of soccer camp – just one of the ways she’s spending summer. She’s also hanging out with friends, making videos on TikTok, practicing for basketball and softball season and maybe also practicing a little piano and clarinet thrown in for good measure, as well as having just recently celebrated her 12th birthday. Audrey Cross is otherwise running a successful fashion startup with her mother, Angela. No big deal. Sissy + Snap!, the Crosses’ custom handbag and accessories company, uses a modular snap system to give girls, tweens, teens and even fanciful adults a fun, unique way to switch up their style. The inaugural line, launched this past winter, features four different handbag kits, each themed around an eye-catching animal – complete with personalized backstories – as well as five snap collections customers can purchase separately. The inspiration for Sissy + Snap! came from a shopping trip Audrey Cross and her mother took while on vacation a few years ago. “I really liked strange purses,” Audrey Cross says. “So when my mom and I visited a boutique and they had all of these crazy animal purses, we thought, there are so many – what if you had just one, and you could switch the different pieces out?” After spending some time mulling over the idea, Angela Cross, who brings to Sissy + Snap! experience in marketing and art/creative direction, worked with her daughter to make a slideshow of what the business could look like, even sketching out designs on paper and cutting them out into the company’s first makeshift prototypes. They worked with a local company, KDK, that helps coordinate offshore manufacturing, and they received their first sample piece. The pair made a few final tweaks – a thicker gold chain, sturdier snap inserts – before releasing the line. “My background is graphic design, so when we collaborate, a lot of time, it was like [Audrey Cross] was the client,” Angela Cross admits, as the pair both agree Audrey Cross can be opinionated on most anything connected to the company. “But it’s custom
down to the detail, in terms of the design. And even though it’s marketed to kids, we wanted it to be a higher quality and more durable product.” Sissy + Snap! handbags and accessories are sold through their own online storefront, as well as at Tallulah & HESS, a Dallas lifestyle boutique, and as of July, on Amazon, as well. Best-sellers from the first collection include Caty the Color Block Cat, described as having a heart of gold, and Piper the Pretty Pup, which is generally known to be laid-back – according to the character’s online bio. “Our goal isn’t as much to see a girl with her purse on her side walking around, though that’s great, of course,” says Angela Cross. “We want you to interact with it and play with it and envision what your own design is.” Angela and Audrey Cross say eventually they would like to have children’s books or even an app devoted to their fashionable yet versatile characters. “I like that they have backstories, because no other purse has that,” says Audrey Cross. “It’s kind of unique.” The names and stories, like most of the business process so far, were a collaboration between mother and daughter. Together, along with Audrey Cross’ 5-year-old sister, Ava, they’ve taken on everything from craft fairs, a downtown promotional photo shoot featuring Audrey Cross and her friends, and an appearance on the KSDK TV program Show Me St. Louis. Along the way, Angela Cross says that Sissy + Snap! has allowed her daughter to experience entrepreneurship first-hand and flex her business skills, from creative sales tactics when staffing booths – dancing is sometimes part of her strategy – to public speaking and pitching her company confidently, as she did at the St. Louis Family magazine and xplor’s KIDZPRENEUR competition in April, where she won first place in her age division.
So, what’s next for the Sissy + Snap! team (aside from taking on the seventh grade)? “I want to do backpacks,” says Audrey Cross. “I think that will be cool, and the app will also be cute. Every day, I just think of new things you could put a snap on.” In the immediate future, the self-funded company is looking at launching MegaSnaps, one large snap-able piece that can take on shapes like clouds and hearts. Down the line, the Crosses would like to expand to products for boys, showing a little love to the Cross brothers, 13-year-old Ethan and 5-year-old Mason. And both Angela and Audrey Cross are interested in collaborating with other local female-led (and specifically young female-led) business owners, from artists to calligraphers and more, tying in with the mission of their company: to promote inclusiveness for all girls, through innovation, empowerment, creativity and entrepreneurship. The mission is easy enough to work toward, as the company was built on it. “From a family perspective, Audrey’s dad, Brian, owns his own business, and I think that entrepreneurial spirit runs through the whole family,” says Angela Cross. “As parents, we’re trying to teach them, but I think if you’re going to go down this path with your kid, whether you’re working with them, having a kid entrepreneur or simply just encouraging them, at a certain point, you have to step back, and you have to let them run with it. Audrey has to decide how she wants to take this and move forward with it. You can help guide them along, and give them opportunities, but they have to be the final decision-maker.” Sissy + Snap!, 1008 Locust St., St. Louis, sissyandsnap.com

alome Christian is no stranger to the luxury retail scene, having worked at Saks Fifth Avenue since 2013. Her move in July to Saks Fifth Avenue St. Louis at Plaza Frontenac, however, sees her as the first female, African American general manager this branch has had. “It feels like over the past several years, there has been a real momentum building for women in leadership positions,” Christian says. “I feel proud, but I also feel a huge responsibility to be a great leader.” Working at such an iconic brand in the world of style is the dream job for Christian. “I like being a part of things that are big,” she confides. “Saks is big when it comes to fashion and luxury. It has been in so many movies. It’s shaped and influenced people’s lives when it comes to fashion. I have to pinch myself now and then.” Christian came to St. Louis last month from the flagship store in New York City and is excited to get to know not only her store and her staff but also the greater community. “I’m most excited about immersing myself in St. Louis culture. The people here are great and the cultural opportunities are amazing. There’s so much to do.”
And Saks Fifth Avenue St. Louis has been active in that community, too, with a focus on giving back to local organizations. Christian lists off some of the charities that they’ve partnered with in the past year: Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Sheldon Arts Foundation, among others. “I look forward to getting to know the charities as I get to know St. Louis,” Christian says. Something else Christian looks forward to in her new position is watching Saks Fifth Avenue St. Louis move into the future. She reveals, as a luxury retailer we are focused on ensuring that we keep the luxury experience that our Saks clients have come to expect and seamlessly integrate relevant technologies to service them when and how they want to be serviced. Keeping that timeless look is also Christian’s motto when it comes to fashion. “It’s best to invest in great pieces first,” she advises. “Fashion and styles will change but I’ve had clients tell me they’ve had the same Chanel bag for 20 years and still use it. Wear what makes you feel fabulous and embrace your own style.”

these immovable lines,” he says. “It makes me question how far we have really come.” Knowles says in some ways, he’s still the same person he was before the riots, but he’s different in others ways. “I’ve been criticized by people on both sides because I try not to take sides … ,” he says. “For me, it’s about gaining a true understanding and finding the best possible solutions for everyone.” Knowles will be term-limited out of office next April, having gone through a firestorm that still smolders five years later.

ive years ago, James Knowles was thrown into the middle of a firestorm. He went from being the young mayor of a diverse, relatively thriving St. Louis suburb to being a key figure in a now iconic civil rights struggle and racial unrest that was televised live around the world. Knowles, of course, serves Ferguson. The name of the city became a household word as riots broke out and Ferguson burned following the shooting of Michael Brown in 2014. Knowles’ city was ground zero for the Black Lives Matter movement and the national debate over the use of force by police. Knowles is still the mayor of the city where he was born and raised. He’s almost 40 now and has seen the births of his two children since that fateful summer. “My ability to be patient has certainly grown, and all of this has prepared me to have a 2- and a 4-year-old!” Knowles says with a muted laugh as he drives to one of the 12 state license offices that he manages. He says he works about 50 hours a week in his “real” job, while he puts in many more hours making $350 a month as the mayor of one of the most infamous cities in America. “No mayor in the St. Louis area or many in the country for that matter have had to deal with the sustained amount of civil unrest that I’ve had to deal with,” he says. Knowles graduated from Florissant’s McCluer High School in 1997. He then had a double major at Kirksville’s Truman State University in political science and criminology and earned a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in public administration. He had to put all of his learned knowledge to the test in the first few days he took office; it was the same week as the destructive Good Friday tornado of 2011. “I was sworn in on a Tuesday, and that Friday, 900 homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged in Ferguson,” he says. “Two years later, another tornado hit, so I spent most of my first term as mayor rebuilding.” Despite the tornados, Ferguson was lauded for its successes under his leadership. But that all changed when the riots, looting and arson began. “Ferguson was becoming known as the community in North County that was beating the trends, and so suddenly, to have Ferguson go from receiving accolades to being seen as some sort of ghetto was a shock,” says Knowles. “We went from being praised for our gains to being told we were doing everything wrong.” After journalists like Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon, CNN and all the other network news crews left town, Knowles was faced with federal investigations while trying to find answers and rebuild the city. “We thought we could actually get back to having a real conversation about how we could make things better, but the whole conversation wasn’t about Ferguson at all,” he says. “It was about police ticketing in the region, structural racism in St. Louis and then national race relations. It became more than Ferguson, but they put it all on us.” He believes he was wrongly demonized by extremists and the national media. Some even accused him of being racist. “I was the only white kid on my baseball team,” Knowles says. “I went to diverse schools. My wedding party was diverse. I coached wrestling teams that were all black. My group of friends is diverse. I wasn’t someone who had to have a ‘come to Jesus’ moment about race. A lot of people in St. Louis did get a wake-up call, but for me, it wasn’t.” What happened in Ferguson and what led to it will be studied and debated for years to come, and Knowles admits he doesn’t have all the answers – nobody does. “I don’t know where we’re at in civil rights relations because people have drawn

A Summer Surprise
C
ommunication has the most impact when it is verbal, visual and in person on a topic important to all participants. This summer, to my surprise, I encountered a stellar example on a tour of the Sept. 11 memorial in New York. Like many, I had seen on television the second skyjacked plane crash into 2 World Trade Center. As a CNN correspondent, I had worked in the original 1 World Trade Center, already collapsed, so I was glued to the TV for two weeks. I thought I knew the whole story, but I didn’t. The tour company promising a guide “with a personal connection” certainly delivered. Ron, the guide in question, had been six blocks away watching when the second tower collapsed around 9 a.m. He was passionate, but not overly so, showing my fellow tourists and I photographs as he talked. He fielded our questions well, and we absorbed his informed testimony. Studies show the maximum time an adult can give a topic or task 100 percent attention is usually only 1½ hours. Ron filled two hours – most touchingly when he said, “It was the first day of school, so many dropping off their kids were late to work and, thus, survived.” As a mom who had sat in many carpool lines, I thought that
By Janis Murray
fact was relatable, effective. When Ron ended, I asked him, “How do you relive this regularly?” He responded: “I can only do it once a week. Otherwise, it’s too much.” I understood. After that, touring the museum alone was less intense. Afterward, outside, where the reflecting pools rim the footprints of the two former towers, the visual hit hard – the overall impression being of a building falling, with pearl-like streams of water dropping into infinity representing each person who died. Then, each victim’s name is inscribed not in alphabetical order but, through incredible research, in a group with the people each worked and died with. I will never forget that guide, covering his shivering at times, recounting that day 18 years ago now. Ron really wanted us to understand the ongoing need for all of us to be vigilant. That is the word I remember most. Home base messages are best short, like that. In 20 years of coaching individuals to express their goals in interviews, résumés and cover letters/essays, I have never met a better communicator. Ron could have lost his message or composure at any time, but didn’t. His critical blend of information and emotion was clear. A perfect example for all of us seeking to communicate well.

Volvo gifts area auto devotees with an all-wheel-drive crossover that does exactly that – with self-assured elegance.
C
rossovers are called crossovers because they … well … cross over. (Hey, where else are you gonna get this kind of nuanced automotive analysis?) That is to say, crossovers cross over from their car-platform origins to the sport-utility realm – a segment originally limited to truck-based vehicles – through beefed-up structures, raised-ride heights, four-corner tractive talent and, compared to their passenger-car source material, more robust hauling and towing capabilities.
44 August 23, 2019 | LadueNews.com 44 august 23, 2019 | LadueNews.com
Few make that crossing with more panache than the 2019 Volvo XC90. As Volvo’s largest crossover, the XC90 comes as the 250-horsepower T5, the 400-horsepower T8 plug-in hybrid and the model I drove: the 316-horsepower XC90 T6, with its standard all-wheel drive. In all guises, though, the XC90 constitutes a capable, elegant, unique example of its breed. For starters, this vehicle, available in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims, sports roughly as stylish a look as a three-row, seven-passenger people-hauler
can. Almost literally highlighting that look is a “Thor’s Hammer” headlight design (Avengers aficionados should love that marketing moniker), purposeful profile, southto-north “running river” taillights and a macho front squared enough to star in a movie remake of Warren Beatty’s 1990 Dick Tracy. Although I drove a 2019, I can report that the XC90’s look for 2020 will undergo a mild update, albeit one so modest you’d have to be XC90’s lead engineer to spot the changes – essentially a revised grille and new wheel designs. Inside, the XC90 boasts a number of you-won’t-findthis-anywhere-else features. To wit: • The keyless start, instead of a button, involves a twist knob on the center console. • The three-section second row can be had with a deployable, factory-installed booster seat. • The center-stack touch screen, rather than horizontal, is vertical, like an Apple iPad. • The engine in this nearly 2.5-ton vehicle has just – gasp! – four cylinders. But whoa! Wait! Hold on! Before panic sets in, I should note that the T6’s 2.0-liter quartet generated – wait for it – 316 horsepower, magic wrought via two boosters: a turbocharger and a supercharger.
The supercharger kicks in at launch, using its beltdriven fan to deliver a blast of fresh air to the cylinders with immediacy, banishing turbo-lag while serving up 295 foot-pounds of torque at just 2,200 rpm. Once the engine’s going robustly, the turbo takes over to ensure the power party continues all the way to a 5,700-rpm peak. Add a standard eight-speed automatic, engine stop/start and driver-selectable chassis modes of Eco, Comfort, Dynamic and Off Road, and you get an Environmental Protection Agency rating of 26 highway/22 combined in an AWD vehicle that’ll tow 5,000 pounds, carry up to 86 cubit feet of cargo and hit 60 mph in the mid-6s. Also worth noting, the cargo-bay lift gate in the Inscription was hands-free, opening with a swift kick under the bumper. On the road, the T6’s Pirelli Scorpions, hugging handsome (and Ferris wheel-size) 21-inch V-Spoke alloy wheels, sent some road noise to the cabin, but otherwise, I enjoyed a marvelously quiet and composed highway ride. Also, in a 175-mile trip to and from Steelville, southwest of Ladue, the XC90 got 23 mpg. Inside, the T6 provided great room in the first two rows of seats, with the third bordering, frankly, on kid stuff.
That said, the décor in the Inscription – creamy nappa, real walnut inlays – looked gorgeous. Only the panoramic moonroof’s gauzy power shade, which failed to fully block sunlight – an issue on very hot days – struck me as a candidate for improvement. Regarding safety, the XC90 sports not only all the usual features – stability control, an anti-lock braking system, air bags galore – but also Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection and, should the driver manage to defeat the XC90’s Lane Keep Assist, Run-off Road Protection that cinches safety belts tighter and beefs up seat cushions to better absorb undercarriage impacts. For 2020, joining that XC90 “nanny” roster will be driver-assist features including steering assist for autoemergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert and lane-keep systems. Speaking of automotive nannies, I found the park-itself function in the T6 to be impressively effective and easy to use. So, in the home stretch, all things considered, the XC90 struck me as a crossover unlikely to ever make its driver cross. Email guest Test Drive writer Dan Wiese at drivingwithdan@gmail.com.

ime, meet your match. At MarElyse MediSpa, premium medical treatments are turning back the clock on the aging process. Founder and owner Debbie Cornelius Monterubio, PA-C, has brought a revolutionary tactic for turning back the years to St. Louis. “Halo is the new generation of treatments in skin resurfacing,” she describes. “I can customize the treatment for each one of my clients.” Considered the gold standard for laser treatments, Halo can diminish the common signs of aging, including discoloration, sun damage and rosacea, while reducing pores and improving one’s skin texture. It even has the added bonus of creating an angelic glow in patients, post-treatment. “It helps rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the cells at a deeper layer,” co-owner Dr. John Monterubio notes. “In the past, more aggressive skin-resurfacing alternatives, like chemical peels and CO2 lasers had a much longer recovery time. With Halo, the downtime is very little.” Recovery time is, in fact, only a handful of
days, allowing you to return to your normal routine within a little more than a week. Halo is recommended for those over the age of 35, although it also proves capable of treating advanced acne scarring and melasma in younger patients. The treatment can deliver wavelengths that are both ablative (forming deep channels in the epidermal skin layer to stimulate rejuvenation) and non-ablative (heating up the underlying skin to stimulate rejuvenation at the surface), allowing

the patient to decide on their own level of comfort during the procedure and the length of the resulting expected downtime. “It’s a hybrid – a newer technology that can be used in conjunction with [Forever Young] BBL or injectables,” business manager Marysa Monterubio Boggeman details. Broadband light, known as BBL, triggers collagen production to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, and proves ideal as a preventative measure for aging by targeting sun damage. “If the true age skin, meaning what age your skin shows, is [beyond your years], invest in getting your skin into better shape,” Debbie Cornelius Monterubio, PA-C, recommends. MarElyse is hosting an open house on September 5, so guests can inquire about all treatments, hear patient testimonials and much more. “We want every client to feel comfortable in their own skin and as they are,” Boggeman says. “And we’ll help them to feel that way.” 1034 S. he Last Kitchen at The Last Hotel – a full-service restaurant offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and, on weekends, brunch – debuted in June in downtown St. Louis under chef Evy Swoboda. The names of both the restaurant and its parent venue refer to the building’s past use as the iconic International Shoe Co. building – a “last” being the wood mold old-school cobblers used to make shoes. Swoboda previously worked as the chef de cuisine of Clayton’s Pastaria for five years and partnered with The Last Hotel’s developer and co-owner, Tim Dixon, after serving as his local culinary ambassador. “We’re striving to make this a total St. Louis experience for locals and also travelers, so they can come to one place and really feel what the community

is like,” Swoboda says. “We want this experience to be more of a restaurant with a rooftop and rooms than a hotel with a restaurant.” Minneapolis-based ESG Architecture & Design developed the establishment’s look to coincide with the historical building’s neoclassical and art decostyle details, resulting in what Dixon describes as “a contemporary space with approachability and function” to go with the “casual high-touch” food and beverages. To develop The Last Kitchen’s menu, Swoboda drew inspiration from a tour of five cities along the Mississippi River. “We spent a lot of time researching what a total St. Louis experience would be since we’re a giant melting pot in the Midwest that’s an intersection of so many different influences,” says Swoboda, who staged in
By Mabel Suen kitchens from Minneapolis to New Orleans. “I’m telling the story of the Mississippi River, taking nods from the North and South and putting a St. Louis twist to them.” The from-scratch kitchen features a seasonally influenced menu and an in-house butcher to make use of all of its thoughtfully sourced ingredients. For her handrolled pastas, for instance, Swoboda uses heritage wheat milled by Benton, Illinois’ Double Star Farms. Her garlic noodles, meanwhile, consist of tagliatelle with olive oil, fermented black garlic, chili flakes and Parmesan. As another highlight from the main menu, boudin toasted ravioli incorporates wild boar and rice sausage, served with comeback sauce (a spicy Southern favorite similar to rémoulade). The bar menu’s best-selling item so far has been its Chicken Cracklin Nachos, with Gorgonzola, celery, crème

Otherwise, breakfast offerings at The Last Kitchen include bacon cut to the individual guest’s desired thickness and such signature dishes as ricotta pancakes with candied walnuts, honey butter, maple syrup infused with bourbon from St. Louis’ own StilL 630 and the guest’s choice of blueberries or dark chocolate chips. From the beverage list, finally, tipplers can choose from draft and bottled beer, wine by the glass or bottle, and pre-Prohibition-inspired cocktails like the Ladies’ Companion, with exclusive StilL 630 Two-Step Gin, hot sauce, tomato juice, lemon and Worcestershire sauce, garnished with a salt-and-pepper rim and celery. In short, before viewing A Man of No Importance from R-S Theatrics, area residents should consider first visiting the last – The Last Kitchen, that is. (Seems like a shoo-in!)

Story: Alfie Byrne lives a quiet life in Dublin in the early 1960s. The bachelor bus conductor shares a modest home with his sister, Lily, and has a passion for theater that he fulfills as director of a community troupe that performs at his Catholic church, St. Imelda’s. When Alfie names Oscar Wilde’s tragedy Salomé as the next play the group will stage, however, more than one eyebrow raises at the prospect of performing a “scandalous” work by so controversial a writer as the famous homosexual native son. Father Kenny, who views the troupe’s quality as mediocre at best, tells Alfie the show won’t be performed – and shuts it down. On the heels of a rendition of Wilde’s noncontroversial comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, with his dream of producing another play by his favorite playwright stifled, Alfie reflects on his quiet life as a shy and closeted gay “man of no importance.” He thinks back on his job, his unexpressed love for his affable co-worker Robbie, the parish members who form his troupe and Lily’s determination to postpone her own wedding till her brother marries. Will he ever be able to reveal who he truly is and follow his own advice to “love who you love”? Highlights: R-S Theatrics unveils a nifty, heartfelt St. Louis premiere of A Man of No Importance as part of its ninth Season of Finding Home. Anchoring this endearing little musical written by the team behind Ragtime is an affecting, bravura performance by Mark Kelley in the title role. Other Info: Kelley’s haunting portrayal of the kindhearted, lonely Alfie ranks among this year’s very best local performances. He absolutely embodies the heart and soul of this mild-mannered, measured character, who lives for expressions of art in a world where a declaration of his sexuality could lead to severe beatings. Kelley’s gentle, caring Alfie remains constantly excited by the prospect of bringing Wilde’s witty works to his local stage – even if it’s just the church basement. The uncredited scenic designer cleverly depicts the back stage at St. Imelda’s, where the players congregate for rehearsal, an area lined with myriad costumes and props furnished by Heather Tucker. Their expert interpretation of Stephen Flaherty’s Irish-tinged, melancholy score beautifully accompanies Lynn Ahrens’ thoughtful lyrics and the sensitive book written by Terrence McNally, which is based on a 1994 film of the same title. One also can discern similarities in the artistic style so prevalent in the historically sweeping Ragtime with this relatively obscure but superbly crafted piece. Director Christina Rios elicits strong, well-etched performances from her capable cast, although many of the players struggle to project their voices at times over the nearby musical ensemble. In addition to Kelley’s steady, emotionally wrought
interpretation of Alfie, there’s marvelous work by others in the stalwart cast, including Stephanie Merritt as Alfie’s staunchly old-fashioned sister. She shares some telling scenes with Michael B. Perkins as he convincingly portrays Mr. Carney; Perkins craftily shows the menacing change in the stuffy butcher’s demeanor from enjoying taking center stage in Alfie’s shows to coldly deciding his potential brother-in-law is promoting pornography. Kent Coffel makes for a charming Baldy, a dapper chap who dearly misses his late wife, while Kay Love, Nancy Nigh and Jodi Stockton amusingly portray a trio of parishioners who definitely put the “community” in community theater – it’s fun to watch these talented women polish their roles as wannabe actresses. Lindy Elliott does well as Adele, a young woman with a dark secret, although her tiny voice needs amplification when singing. Dustin Allison is convincing as the carelessly blunt Father Kenny, and Marshall Jennings is effective as the frightening, psychopathic Breton Beret, a pub friend of Robbie’s, as well as reliable troupe performer Rasher Flynn. Kellen Green succeeds in his portrayal of Robbie, albeit struggling with the musical aspects, while Jennifer Theby-Quinn superbly embodies the frustrations and desires of the chain-smoking, illicit lover Mrs. Patrick. Perkins (again) makes for a suave, dashing Wilde, who appears in Alfie’s reminiscences to guide the repressed man to some element of happiness. Although Flaherty’s music can be difficult to sing, there’s little doubt that Rios and her inspired cast realize the cadence not only in their characters but also in the era and locale. A Man of No Importance continues R-S Theatrics’ tradition of presenting polished, pensive musicals such as Parade while doing so in uplifting fashion.

W
hy write about a wine like this during the heat of the summer? Because it’s flying off shelves here – and fall
will soon arrive.
With Daou Vineyards & Winery’s Pessimist, brothers Georges and Daniel Daou, of the vineyards/winery bearing their surname, sought to create a red blend that showcased varietals flourishing in Paso Robles, California. They wanted to demonstrate old world-style winemaking with the rich fruitiness of California-style wines. As a hotter locale, Paso Robles tends to produce riper grapes that add to darker, more fruit-forward wines. Combined with the Daous’ cultivation and winemaking style, Pessimist marks a grand achievement and a truly unique wine – so much so that the brothers gave it its own website, apart from the main Daou website. (The other wines on that site, incidentally, focus more on Bordeaux and Rhône varietals, often blending the two families with remarkable results.) Hailing from Lebanon and having grown up in southern France surrounded by vineyards, the Daous spent much of their
early years dreaming of their own life of wine. They began to realize that dream on purchasing Hoffman Mountain Ranch and renaming it Daou Mountain. At 2,200 feet above sea level, the area had long produced wine. The Daous restored the original redwood winery, preserving history and carrying on tradition while adding their own style. The brothers’ own sly slogan for the wine at hand states, “A pessimist is never disappointed.” Regarding this wine, those words could never ring truer – although, given Pessimist’s deliciousness, one might always see the proverbial glass as half empty. Food Pairings: Aged meats, smoked lamb, barbecue and soft goat cheese (with, apparently, summer’s swelter) all pair nicely with Pessimist.

tepping onto the cool tiles of my balcony, I gazed across redtile roofs below me and past immaculate golf greens, finally resting my eyes on the mountains beyond, just touched with morning sun. Like the tiles, the air was cool, slightly moist, and it smelled of lavender. Inhale … Exhale … When I first heard of the Ojai Valley Inn, I imagined a quaint B&B in a small town. As it turns out, I was delightfully wrong. The name marks the only modest thing about this luxury resort and spa surrounded by California’s Topatopa Mountains. It’s a world of its own, 80 miles north of Los Angeles, yet an easy walk to the bohemian enclave of Ojai – a Native American name meaning “moon.” As perhaps the most surprising and welcome discovery a traveler to the Ojai Valley Inn can make, the place can satisfy virtually every of visitor, from young singles to families to retirees: athletes, 58 August 23,kind 2019 | LadueNews.com
artists, spiritualists, foodies. During my four days there, I delighted in discoveries that nourished my soul, challenged my body and tickled my senses. For the athlete, for instance, the Ojai Valley Inn began as a golf resort and continues to cater to serious golfers and beginners alike. The course surrounds many of the resort’s buildings, allowing for views of the greens from almost every location. Built in 1923, before the advent of bulldozed and manufactured golf courses, the fairways and greens conform to the natural rolling landscape. Since its creation, celebrities from classic crooner Bing Crosby to contemporary film star Will Smith, along with golf greats like Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw, have played and competed on the historic course, which became more challenging in 1988, when course designer Jay Morrish tweaked the 18 holes to their current par-70 status.

Serious gym devotees can work out at the resort’s Spa Ojai, where a complete weight room with cardio machines adjoins a lap pool. Following a workout, soothing spa treatments can ease body and mind alike. I also enjoyed two of the many complimentary fitness classes led by friendly spa staff, who showed me new ways to stretch and left my muscles satisfyingly sore. For the artist, meanwhile, the Topatopa Mountains – the resort’s most prominent natural feature, running in an east-west line – should provide plenty of inspiration, especially if one is lucky enough to experience the “pink moment”: If conditions are just right and you look to the east, the setting sun reflects off the mountains, swathing everything in a pink glow. When the pink diminishes to a dusky blue and the moon appears, the Ojai Valley Inn appropriately twinkles with the light of Illume, an art installation by Paul Ferrante that features 28 handmade wrought-iron and glass lanterns hanging at various heights from the resort’s iconic 200-year-old oak tree. The effect is magical. During the day, the resort’s Artist Cottage & Apothecary provides a fun, whimsical setting for a variety of arts and crafts. Open studio hours welcome guests to explore projects such as mandala spirit stone painting, paper marbling and candle-making. And it’s easy to spend an afternoon in downtown Ojai, exploring the town’s many galleries that feature local artists’ work. For the spiritualist, otherwise, just being surrounded by the Ojai area’s natural beauty can be moving. Those same spiritual seekers flock to Ojai to experience the town’s Chumash Native American history and seven geomagnetic vortexes that some credit with saving the town from wildfire destruction in 2017. Mind-body activities similarly abound at the inn. Guests can create custom aromatherapy scents at the Artist Cottage, take free holistic nutrition classes, receive sound energy therapy and participate in complimentary group meditation and sessions involving qi gong, a holistic Chinese system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing and meditation. The many tranquil nooks and crannies with comfortable seating scattered around the resort are perfect for private meditative moments. Finally, for the foodie, one of the loveliest sights at the Ojai Valley Inn may be the manicured kitchen garden, where herbs, vegetables and fruits abound, grown for use in the resort’s five restaurants. From fine dining at Olivella to gourmet coffee at Libbey’s, dishes are fresh, varied and creative and can satisfy a range of dietary needs. Cocktail fans can enjoy classic combinations and craft creations in the resort’s most historic venue, the Wallace Neff Heritage Bar. Named for the resort’s founder, the bar occupies the resort’s original clubhouse and surrounds guests with a posh, old-Hollywood vibe. Seven varieties of lavender grow on-site for use in everything from spa treatments to lotions to subtly flavored scones; I highly recommend the refreshing house-made lavender lemonade – with or without alcohol. In addition to the culinary delights at the resort, Ojai’s many restaurants serve dishes prepared with seasonal, local produce and meats. One example is Osteria Monte Grappa, whose menu features housemade pasta and organic ingredients along with an entire section devoted to local duck-egg frittatas. No matter what your tastes and interests, the Ojai Valley Inn should leave you planning your next visit! der ven of la
