MOVERS & SHAKERS This month, Angels’ Arms founder and executive director Bess Wilfong, whose organization bolsters the state’s foster care system as it pertains to the challenging matter of sibling groups, earns the spotlight from LN favorite Alice Handelman.
On the cover 10 “The wonderful thing about the foundation is that it is truly of and for the St. Louis community,” declares Lisa Picker, executive director of the Women’s Foundation of Greater Saint Louis (WFSTL). Formed in 2007, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving the economic conditions of women and girls in the St. Louis area through grants, community engagement and policy reform. On Sept. 20, WFSTL will host its annual Making a Difference event, honoring Build-A-Bear Workshop founder Maxine Clark, as well as six local companies at the vanguard of gender equality in the workplace. Turn to page 10 to read more about WFSTL’s mission and what attendees to the celebration can expect. EDITOR TAKE ME TO A CRAFT STORE, AND I’LL BE PREOCCUPIED FOR hours, envisioning all the things I could do with this and do with that in my home. The possibilities are endless, and there’s something about crafting – creating something from nothing – that truly lifts my spirits. That’s something that Karen Hill, founder of Olive + Peony, and I have in common. Founded on the desire to create and use her natural crafting skills, Olive + Peony is an online children’s clothing business that finds the place between fashionable and fit for everyday wear. Starting on p. 39, LN digital editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter showcases the offerings of Olive + Peony, relates what inspires Hill’s designs and touches on the ever-growing custom market her clients have come to know and love from her shop. We hope you enjoy learning more about this little business for the “sister among misters.” Also in this week’s edition, LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach exudes excitement for a new casual eatery that has been welcomed into the Webster Groves community. Starting on p. 58, we hope you enjoy learning more about The Frisco Barroom, a family-friendly restaurant and lounge with a stunning aesthetic and wide array of offerings even for the most discerning diner. All the best,
Editor’s Corner The word around town
Congratulations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic School for being named one of five winners in this year’s Entenmann’s Little Bites: I <3 Recycling photo submission sweepstakes, in partnership with TerraCycle, “an innovative waste management company with a mission to eliminate the idea of waste.” According to a press release, “participants printed out the ‘I <3 Recycling’ poster, wrote how recycling Little Bites pouches makes them feel, snapped a photo with the completed poster and submitted the photo using a form on the promotion page. Candidates received 2,000 TerraCycle points, redeemable for a cash donation to the school or nonprofit of their choice just for entering.”
Kids In The Middle – a nonprofit organization that empowers children, parents and families during and after divorce through counseling, education and support – hosted a 24-hour matching gift campaign, Giving 4 Kids, and was presented with a check from Happy to Give in the amount of $30,000 as a matching donation. The funds raised, according to a press release, will provide counseling services for children and families in the midst of divorce. Approximately 90 percent of the clients assisted receive financial assistance – and none of which are turned away due to their inability to pay for services.

rom m the talking h heads ds th thatt p pontificate tifi t on cable bl newss to th the petty tt squabbles bbl that play out on social media, today’s sociopolitical climate is heavy on shouting, but sorely lacking in dialogue – not to mention actual listening. Perhaps that’s what makes the Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis’ (WFSTL) inaugural Listening Tour all the more remarkable. “Our work is really focused on answering one question,” asserts Lisa Picker, the foundation’s newly-appointed executive director. “What can we do to help women improve their economic independence so that they can make a better world for themselves and for their community?” In the spring of 2017, the nonprofit, which advocates for the economic security of St. Louis-area women and girls, hosted seven “listening sessions.” By partnering with local organizations like Doorways, Girls in the Know and Safe Connections, among others, WFSTL endeavored to spark honest conversations with women about the obstacles impeding them from achieving economic security. From these discussions, the foundation identified no less than five specific barriers: safe and affordable childcare, mental health support for sexual trauma survivors, housing, transportation, and access to the education and training necessary for employment. Although WFSTL launched primarily as a grant-making organization in 2007, its work has since evolved. “In the past two years, we’ve shifted our focus even more narrowly to women’s economic independence, and developing initiatives that will improve conditions for women,” shares Picker. The Listening Tour yokes together both areas of the foundation’s mission. Its findings will not only influence future grant awardees, but also impact the nonprofit’s growing interest in public policy advocacy and reform. In addition to these listening sessions, WFSTL also introduced its first-ever Women in the Workplace Employment Scorecard, a survey aimed to evaluate local employment practices and their effect on gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The 2017 study resulted in the recognition of six area businesses, both large and small, that excel

in promoting gender equality. WFSTL will launch the second round of its scorecard in the fall, after its annual Making a Difference celebration. During this marquee event, which takes place on Thursday, Sept. 20, WFSTL will honor Build-A-Bear Workshop founder and entrepreneur Maxine Clark, as well as the businesses that earned the highest marks in the 2017 Women in the Workplace Employment Scorecard. Six-time Olympic medalist, advocate and philanthropist Jackie Joyner-Kersee will also serve as keynote speaker, along with radio personality Carol Daniel as emcee. “Last year’s Making a Difference boasted the largest attendance ever, with more than 400 people interested in making a difference in the WHAT/WHEN/WHERE lives of women and girls in our region,” states Picker. “The response this year has been equally as enthusiastic.” This year’s Making a Difference arrives at a time when women’s issues continue to rise economic independence for to the fore, says Picker. “We’re at a very st. Louis Women and Girls exciting moment,” she proclaims. “When that many women committed to community engagement gather together, the energy is Thursday, sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m. always electric. Great things can happen when women link arms and work together Hilton St. Louis to create change.” frontenac Hotel

The largest public research university in eastern missouri, university of missouri-st. louis [umsl] is recognized as a leading school with a diverse population, and notable learning and leadership opportunities. While the reputable school receives a lot of worthy attention, it makes sure to turn the spotlight on its valuable alumni and community donors. “umsl achieved a remarkable milestone this spring when it graduated its 100,000th alum,” says chancellor Tom george. “The Founders dinner is special this year as we honor the friends, donors, alumni, faculty, staff and students who helped to make this milestone a possibility.” The annual event highlights the importance these significant contributions make to the students, faculty and staff at the university, as well as the community at large. “Only 23 percent of our budget comes from the state of missouri,” the chancellor says. “We depend on our alumni and friends to partner with us to fund scholarships and campus buildings.” nominations for the night’s honorees pour in from alumni, faculty and the entire campus. an alumni committee makes final selections, and passes them along to the alumni association governing Board for approval. “The Founders dinner is a chance for all to come together and celebrate,” notes george. “it [allows us to] honor those who have given time and money to the university.”
in years past, the Founders dinner has kicked off with an inspirational presentation by famed st. louisans – from former cardinals all-star Ozzie smith to Bobby norfolk, the three-time emmy award-winning storyteller — followed by supremely talented student entertainment. “The big surprise is the e. desmond and mary ann lee medal announcement,” says Jennifer Jezek-Taussig, associate vice chancellor for alumni engagement and annual giving. “The hush that goes across the room turns into a spontaneous, standing ovation. it gives you goosebumps to honor these special people.” desmond and mary ann lee were well-known philanthropists throughout the st. louis area. The des lee collaborative Vision unites professors from different fields, who exceed beyond their respective areas while maintaining valued community partnerships. “We ask professors to go that extra mile,” explains george. “continue being famous in your field, but on top of that, have a community outreach component. The des lee collaborative Vision fits in perfectly [with] what we are doing at umsl.” past Founders dinner honorees have included: KsdK sports director Frank cusumano; george paz, chairman of the board at express scripts and current chair of umsl’s chancellor’s council; sandra Van Trease, group president at BJc healthcare; and former missouri state treasurer clint zweifel. “We are honoring terrific alumni,” says george. “For us, it’s been a ‘who’s who’ list in the past – and it is as well this coming year.”

Design Speak A
Ladue News Design Awards home is as unique as its inhabitants. However, it takes a skilled and talented designer to channel that uniqueness and turn it into a luxurious and flawless design. That’s why Ladue News is proud to celebrate such works by bringing back the Ladue News Design Awards – remodeled to be better than ever. “The Ladue News Design Awards is an initiative created to recognize St. Louis area interior designers,” says LN general manager Andrea Griffith. “The goal of the program is to highlight local projects gracing the homes of our friends and neighbors. Our readers have a keen interest in interior design, which is an integral part of our weekly content. And, as a community magazine, we like to shine a light on the best local businesses. The Design Awards is a great marriage of the two.” For the Design Awards, members of St. Louis’ thriving design community are encouraged to submit their best projects from the last year in the following categories: kitchen, dining, bathroom, bedroom, living space (which may involve living, family, great or hearth rooms) and outdoor living spaces designed with furniture and intended for outdoor living and entertainment. Interested participants may either
By Alecia Humphreys email Megan Langford at mlangford@laduenews.com or submit a completed application, which can be found at laduenews.com to Langford. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 7. A panel of renowned judges is being assembled to identify the standout designs revolutionizing St. Louis’ market today, and will select three finalists per category. Not only will those finalists be featured in the Oct. 12 edition of Ladue News – revealing a sneak peek of the project selected, in addition to a brief description of the project and company information – but also all finalists will be celebrated at the Ladue News Design Awards event at Palladium Saint Louis on Oct. 25. All finalists will receive four complimentary tickets to the event, where the 2018 Ladue News Design Award winners will be announced and recognized. Plus, the winners from each category will be featured in the Oct. 26 edition of Ladue News, highlighting an array of images of the space selected and an accompanying story, further highlighting the space. “I look forward to seeing all of the amazing work submitted by our local design community. St. Louis is lucky to have talented interior designers in bounty, and I’m happy we are able to recognize the cream of the crop projects from the past year.”

T
he white kitchen has long enjoyed such favorable standing because of its attractiveness, and it can certainly make a bright, happy space. Too much starkness, though, can come to feel cold and uninviting – white walls, white tiles, white countertops, white cabinets, white, white and more white. “And then people started introducing grays,” says Wendy Kuhn, senior designer at Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath in Brentwood. “They got comfortable with that, [so] then people started slowly transitioning into blues. And now we’re seeing greens coming in. And then of course there’s also that really dramatic black color trend that’s coming back that’s maybe a little
bit more sophisticated.” In recent years, homeowners have been shifting away from monochromatic comfort zones, injecting bold pops of color for a more fun and welcoming feeling. Many expert interior designers, including Kuhn, agree that such pops of color make a great way to enliven a space and make it feel more personalized. “Adding a little warmth in your tones or accents of color in your backsplash tile or countertop can make a real statement,” says Carolyn Beard, co-owner of Callier & Thompson in Ballwin. “It also makes the space unique to the homeowner.” Pops of color can accentuate kitchens in many ways, whether you’re building a kitchen from scratch or want to brighten your current one
without making any drastic changes. Beard says the easiest change involves either adding or switching out the handles or pulls on cabinets and drawers. “You can keep the look soft with a brushed nickel, or add a pop with matte black and then add a new faucet to match,” she says. For a slightly larger project, Beard recommends “a wood top on the island to add a rich tone to complement the white perimeter cabinets [for people who] probably won’t be doing much chopping on the surface. But for those who cook a lot, quartz is a great countertop option. Or maybe true marble in a baking area for those who like to roll their dough.” Kelly Hanner, a designer for RSI Kitchen & Bath, says accessorizing your kitchen, repainting

Even if you aren’t quite ready to make a bold change, small color updates can quickly brighten your cooking space. “It’s a way to have a bit more fun,” Kuhn says. “People wanted to play it safe for so long that they’re starting to feel a little bit more comfortable and want to personalize spaces. They’re getting a lot more open to taking those pops of color. It’s a happier feeling.” Callier & Thompson, 14180 Manchester Road, Ballwin, 636-391-9099, callierandthompson.com Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath, 2715 Mercantile Drive, Brentwood, 314-549-5303, karrbick.com RSI Kitchen & Bath, multiple locations, rsikb.com

it, installing a new countertop or changing your backsplash tile all make simple, easy ways to inject color without doing extreme renovations. “Color trends change, and this allows you to have an inexpensive way to add pops of color,” she says. More audacious homeowners can consider several other ways to make a splash with dramatic color. “It really just depends on what the client feels comfortable with and what the space dictates,” Kuhn says. “I just finished a kitchen remodel down in one of those old historic homes in the Central West End, and they have a caterer’s kitchen that we did all green – all the cabinets are green. And it’s just stunning. You walk in, and it kind of takes your breath away.”

K
aren Hill is mom to three children under the age of 6. She has a 5-year-old son and 3-year-old fraternal twins. When her daughter was born, she became fascinated by the array of cute clothing available for little girls; however, she still felt inspired to craft some of her own. “I’ve always been crafty,” Hill says. “I can’t even remember when I learned how to sew, but it’s been a long time. I remember learning crossstitch when I was maybe 8 and making Christmas gifts for my family.” Hill had attempted making clothing for herself years ago, but she found that “children’s clothes are much more fun and quicker to sew.” She soon filled her daughter’s closet with her homemade creations and knew something had to be done. “There was only so much that a little person can wear in [his or her] life,” she says. “That’s when I started reaching out to make things for others.” Hill started Olive + Peony in spring 2016. She named her children’s clothing business after two things that bring her joy. “I picked ‘olive’ because my dream place to live is Italy, and the peony is one of my favorite flowers,” she says. “The name reminds me of things that are beautiful. I want to make things that are pretty and bring people joy.” In her online store, customers will find a colorful array of little girls’ clothes. She specializes in the preschool to grade school range, which is usually sizes 2T to 6Y. As she’s been making more clothing, though, she’s grown in her sizes and has started making clothing on both ends of the spectrum, such as clothes for babies and preteens. Her homepage currently showcases three rompers with fun prints like poppy flowers and gingham. Flipping through the website’s options, visitors will find everything from tunics to petal shorts to skirts and even some boys’ clipon bow ties and holiday belts. “There are a lot of play clothes I like and a lot of dressy clothes I like on the market,” she says. “I try to have mine not too overly done … cute things that can be worn for every day. That’s the spot I try to hit.” Hill says now is a great time to be a crafter because of all the fit-tested patterns available online. “There are so many bountiful clothes designers with PDF patterns,” she says. “You can find almost anything you want. I’ll often splice things together, too.” Hill does all the sewing herself and prewashes the clothes in a gentle detergent free of dyes and perfumes. She tries to use 100 percent cotton fabrics as much as possible. In addition to what’s available at oliveandpeony.com, Hill is constantly working on custom orders, as well. “It’s funny because when I started doing this as a business, I said I’d do a ready-to-ship line,” she says. “Three kids in a year and a half doesn’t give you a lot of spare time. But now I laugh at that idea because my custom orders are half – if not more than half – of what I’ve been doing. It’s fun, though, because I get to do outfits for family photos or birthdays. It means a lot that they’ve chosen me to dress their kids for photos that’ll last forever.” Repeat customers make up nearly half of her business, too, which has led Hill to develop lasting friendships with the parents who order the clothing for their kids. As a stay-at-home mom running a small business, she says she was surprised at how much she missed working in a professional environment and having that constant interaction with peers and co-workers. “It’s been fun for me to have this as a way to still stay in touch with the outside world,” she says. “I’m so appreciative of everyone who’s been supportive of me.” Going forward, Hill says she’d love to expand her boys’ section, calling that market “underserved.” “It’s hard to do cute patterns for boys,” she says. “I would love to do more knit prints for babies, too. And more sibling sets.” In the near future, Hill is excited to sell her wares at the Kirkwood Greentree Festival on Sept. 15 and 16. “I haven’t done a lot of shows, but this will be a great chance for people to come by and see the pieces in person,” she says. Lessons on Leadership
B
eing an effective leader requires more than simply being handed the keys to the kingdom. In many cases, it comes down to the difference between transactional and transformational leadership, with the best leaders sometimes able to function in both capacities. Transactional leaders view leadership as deal-making, the art of the quid pro quo (Latin for “something for something”): “I give you this if you give me something back in return.” Transactional leaders generally focus on keeping things on an even keel, not pushing the envelope too far because of potential consequences. Transformational leaders, on the other hand, take a long-term approach. They recognize that leadership demands difficult choices and remain patient, engaging and willing to make choices to get their organizations to the future. Too many of our leaders today content themselves with being transactional. They have the authority, but they also recognize the strong strings attached to their constituencies and choose to defer to them, even if that’s not the best course of action. In this ever-changing world, whether we like it or not, we need more transformational leaders: men and women with the vision to see a different future, the
willingness to make changes when needed and the courage to defend those changes before criticism, fear and outright opposition. When leaders discuss change, they almost necessarily alienate at least some of the people they’re charged to lead. So to make change worthwhile, they need to state not only what must change but also what won’t. Effective leaders embrace transactionalism because they can describe a decidedly different path in ways that let everyone know where they themselves fit and how they’ll benefit. Such leaders know they need others to join them as partners. To effect big, systematic change, though, requires transformational leadership because it necessitates getting people to change their values. Someone seeking transformational change, however, might also have to deal with situations requiring transactional leadership, to accomplish incremental goals. To be truly effective, leaders need to follow these golden rules: Demonstrate the courage to take action and to stick your neck out – think transformational rather transactional. Never underestimate the power of the status quo and people’s commitment to it.
By Benjamin Ola. Akande
Don’t fear leading from wherever you are, but always lead with others in mind. Take time every now and then to make sure those you’re leading are still following you. As the takeaway, we should all aspire to be a transformational leader at least on a couple of key issues requiring big change. However, an effective leader who tries to change everything at once by being transformational on everything will probably exhaust both the patience and tolerance of those being led.

ess Wilfong’s years of infertility and her strong desire to have children turned into a blessing for more than 500 children, including 150 sibling groups in the St. Louis area. Wilfong, a former teacher in the Lindbergh School District, and her then-husband took training, were licensed by the state of Missouri in 1994 and began fostering children in their home. Fast-forward to 2018, with Wilfong now the founder and executive director of Angels’ Arms, whose Facebook page describes it as “a St. Louis-based, 501©(3) grassroots nonprofit that provides loving homes and resources for foster families until a forever home is found.” Wilfong says, “The idea for Angels’ Arms came about by my discovery that the foster care system in Missouri is inefficient and overburdened.” After serving as a foster parent for several years, Wilfong says she frequently received calls to care for sibling groups. “I realized that there needed to be a place in St. Louis that would keep sibling groups together in a loving environment,” she says. “When you see these kids have been taken from their parents, their friends, their pets, their school, their rooms, and now they are going to be taken from their brother or sister, it is the worst-case scenario you can imagine.” Angels’ Arms, now in its 18th year, provides homes and cares for them for the exclusive use of foster parents who care for siblings who would otherwise be separated in the foster care system. Currently, Angels’ Arms has 13 homes in the St. Louis and St. Charles areas and close to 60 foster children. “Because people respond when they see a need, we have received financial donations, grants, furniture, pianos and bunk beds from members of the community who see the need,” Wilfong says. “When kids are taken into the state’s care, we can all play a part in their lives. A lot of people want to help and do things other than just write a check. They can adopt a room, drop off meals, host birthday parties, tutor, and collect cereal and paper goods that our families need. Usually, children come with nothing, and they need clothing and hygiene products right away. The kids are frightened, confused and angry, and often feel that they are the ones to blame.” In August, news came to Angels’ Arms that the nonprofit had been selected for a congressional award as an Angels in Adoption honoree, after being nominated by U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri’s 2nd congressional district. The 2018 Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s award was designed to celebrate individuals, couples and organizations from across the nation that have made an extraordinary contribution on behalf of children in need of families. Wilfong will accept the award at a special program, ceremony and gala in Washington, D.C., in September. “I could not be happier about Angels’ Arms receiving this special honor,” she says.
“It allows us the opportunity to share our mission with other influential people around the country. There are half a million children in foster care in our country. So many more children can benefit in multiple ways when we involve the community in their lives.” For her dedication to improving the lives of Missouri’s children, Wilfong was named a Woman of Achievement in 2004, a Chanel Woman of Influence and A Classic Woman through Traditional Home magazine, as well as receiving the Lifetime Child Advocate Award from the Missouri Alliance for Children, Youth and Families. She serves on the I Heart Media Advisory Board, the Better Business Bureau Charity Information Service Committee and the Children’s Services Coalition Board. Community members can help Angels’ Arms in various ways. The program’s participants need basic necessities that other people may take for granted, major among them laundry detergent and twin sheets. Angels’ Arms also provides volunteer opportunities and hosts fundraisers. Those wishing more information should call the organization or visit its website.

An Areawide Hole-in-One
T
BLOCK OPENS 100TH PGA CHAMPIONSHIP Michael Block numbered among 20 hopeful PGA of America club pros who qualified for the chance to tee up alongside the full-time tour pros in the 100th PGA Championship. Block struck the opening tee shot at the championship in his hometown. He got the final major of the year underway at 6:50 a.m. at Town and Country’s Bellerive Country Club. “I’ll tell you what, it hasn’t even sunk in yet, what just occurred,” Block says. “Still in the clouds for the moment. This is something I’ll cherish the rest of my life, without a doubt. I can’t believe it’s even real for PGA members such as myself that grew up a mile from this course, came to the 1992 PGA as one of the patrons, a 15-year-old kid, just in awe of these guys. To be that guy on the other side now is pretty surreal. Block serves as head professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, a public course. He attended the championship at Bellerive in 1992 and had golf legends Payne Stewart and Nick Price, the winner, sign his program. Block retains fond memories of that tournament. “I do remember it,” he says. “I remember where I was stationed. I remember I was on Hole 13, just getting autographs. I remember getting Payne Stewart and Nick Price, my two favorite guys. I still have [each autograph] on a ticket that I brought that day.” Twenty years later, the PGA of America announced that Bellerive would host the PGA Championship, and Block earned a spot to play in it.

important thing I learned after four years of college, and it definitely helped me win this tournament.” Finishing second was Kelly Osborne of Ballwin, who shot 74-73-73. That left her with a 220 total, and she ended being runner-up overall. Goldenstein, incidentally, capped the tournament with a birdie on the 18th hole.
GRIESEDIECK CHAMPIONSHIP GOES TO KOVACH
Chris Kovach after winning the Griesedieck Championship.
No fairytale ending ensued, though, as Block didn’t make the cut.
MID-AMATEUR QUALIFIER WILL INCLUDE LOCAL TRIO Three St. Louis golfers will travel to Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, to play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Drew Pranger’s strong 2018 campaign continued recently at Lake Forest Country Club, where he fired the lone subpar round at 71 (1-under) to earn a second consecutive trip to the Mid-Amateur. Joining Pranger will be Sam Migdal and Buddy Allen. Migdal (the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association two-time reigning Player of the Year) and Allen both shot even par 72 to qualify. Allen, the association’s Senior Player of the Year, had also put together a very solid summer.
GOLDENSTEIN WINS MGA WOMEN AMATEUR Emily Goldenstein claimed her second state women’s amateur championship. Goldenstein, a recent University of Memphis graduate, won the 2018 Missouri Women’s Amateur Championship, its 88th, played at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph. Goldenstein, of Chesterfield, carded an overall score of 216 to win by four strokes, with rounds of 72-74-70. She tallied an impressive five birdies, nine pars and four bogeys in the final round of 70. The 2016 amateur champion, Goldenstein tied for second last summer and fought hard to win another championship. She finished with her best score of the tournament, with a final round total of 70. Goldenstein had played just once before the tournament. Still, she believed she would do well. “You have to go into a tournament believing in yourself and believe that you are good enough to compete and win,” Goldenstein says. “That is the most
Chris Kovach defeated Toppie Hogan 2-and-1 in the match-play finale to capture the 96th Griesedieck Championship of the St. Louis District Golf Association, hosted by Old Warson Country Club. Kovach acknowledged the special nature of the victory over four days at Old Warson. “Last summer, I missed out [qualifying] for the U.S. Mid-Amateur by one shot,” he says. “My main goal is always to either qualify for a USGA event or win something locally. So this was definitely pretty awesome, pretty sweet.” Kovach had to survive two days of stroke-play qualifying, then win four matches to capture the prestigious crown. In all, it totaled 110 holes of golf, including a 23-hole, nail-biting victory over four-time winner Skip Berkmeyer in the quarterfinals. Kovach faced amateur great Jim Holtgrieve in the semifinals. The 1981 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, a Walker Cup player and captain, Holtgrieve was doing the improbable, chasing a fifth district title 26 years after he won his fourth, in 1989. While Hogan was beating Pat Riordan 3-and-1, Kovach brought Holtgrieve’s quest to an end, winning their matchup 3-and-2.
METROPOLITAN CUP RENAMED Recently, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association lost long-time executive board member Tom Sobbe, one of its most avid supporters, known to most as “Sob.” At its spring meeting, the association’s executive board voted unanimously to rename the Metropolitan Cup, its longstanding Member Club competition, as the Thomas O. Sobbe Jr. Cup. In his memory, friends of Sobbe have donated an antique British silver cup (circa 1900) to bear that name. “Tom Sobbe was a spectacular leader and advocate of amateur golf,” says Doug Albrecht, who led the effort. “It is appropriate that we donate this silver cup to forever bear his name to recognize his contribution and commitment to the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and the game of golf.” The widely popular Member Club team competition in question, conducted by the association, runs throughout the golf season. Association Member Clubs compete against one another in a season-long competition. Their teams comprise eight members, including a club professional, playing six matches each round. The competition is divided between the roundrobin divisional play and single-elimination playoffs, which determine the champion.

own and Country’s Bellerive Country Club and the metro area in general should take a bow, as the 100th PGA Championship was flawless. Brooks Koepka (16-under) won the championship and the Wanamaker Trophy. He finished two strokes ahead of Tiger Woods (14-under) and three over Adam Scott (13-under). Although the assembled masses swooned over Woods, the Tigermania didn’t shake Koepka, who was in his 100th career start. Koepka set the championship 72-hole scoring record at 264. He’s the fifth male player to win the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in the same year; he also won the U.S. Open in 2017. Koepka led by two shots entering the final round. He was 12-under, with Scott in second place and Woods tied for sixth, at 8-under. Woods’ comeback on the final overshadowed Koepka’s victory to some extent, even though Koepka has won three of the past seven majors. This marks the final year the championship will take place in August. It moves to May next year, when it runs from May 16 to 19 at Bethpage Black in New York. Bellerive previously hosted the championship in 1992, when Nick Price won the first of his three majors.

Metro area plastic surgery centers are offering today’s most advanced anti-aging microneedling treatments for youngerlooking skin from head to toe.

un exposure. Environmental toxins. Personal diet. Your lifestyle can take a toll on your skin. That’s why local plastic surgeons are striving to provide patients with the latest cutting-edge, antiaging solutions – minimally invasive, nonsurgical microneedling procedures – to help keep your face and body looking their best at any age. At Ridenour Plastic Surgery in Creve Coeur, plastic surgeon Dr. Brock Ridenour and his team are now offering Profound RF (radio-frequency) SQ (subcutaneous), a revolutionary radio-frequency technology delivered through microneedles to address problem areas of pooching skin and fat for a smoother, younger-looking body. “We use Profound RF SQ to treat small areas of fat and inelastic skin, such as jowls [sagging jawlines], postpartum [stomachs] and small fat deposits such as
bra fat, back fat and fat above the knees,” Ridenour says. “It is also helpful in the reduction of cellulite, especially on the hips and buttocks.” During the hourlong procedure, Profound RF SQ uses radio-frequency energy to heat subcutaneous fat to a specific controlled temperature over a targeted interval. “Tiny pairs of needles are inserted into the fat to deliver the energy,” Ridenour says. “The temperature is high enough to cause permanent fat injury but is not high enough to cause collateral tissue injury. The heat also results in positive changes to the overlying skin, clinically proven to cause the body to make new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – the skin’s building blocks.” Patients experience minimal downtime related to the treatment, and after just one session, noticeable results can be seen in six to eight weeks, Ridenour says. Although outcomes depend on a variety of factors, from your health and age to how you care
for yourself after the treatment, most patients experience a long-lasting improvement in body contour or cellulite, as well as natural-looking skin – a promising sign for those seeking to reduce the effects of aging. St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery in Chesterfield also is heeding the call for more anti-aging answers with a similar type of minimally invasive, nonsurgical microneedling procedure. “It is gaining in popularity because there are new applications for it,” says Dr. Herluf Lund, one of the practice’s plastic surgeons. “In addition to the face, the procedure can be used on the back of the hands, the inside of the upper arm, the neck and the décolletage.” The hourlong procedure involves the use of a handheld pen-shaped medical instrument that creates thousands of controlled-depth needle punctures in the skin. This elicits the body’s healing process and the production of new collagen, which improves the skin’s texture, from reducing the appearance of fine lines, age spots and acne scars to pore size. “As we age, the skin thins, and collagen helps thicken and tighten the skin,” Lund says. Because the treatment reaches the deepest layer of skin, absorption of added products, such as anti-aging serums, also is enhanced. The treatment is ideal for any healthy client who wants to increase skin smoothness and elasticity, while minimizing wrinkles, cellulite and scars from skin issues, such as acne and chicken pox, Lund says. In microneedling, the needles typically range from 0.25 millimeter to 2.75 millimeters in size, with smaller needles used to address issues on the face and larger needles used on problem areas of the body. Although there may be pinpoint bleeding during the procedure, it’s virtually painless
throughout the process due to the use of numbing cream, and the treated area will appear red, but does not hurt afterward beyond the feeling of a mild sunburn, Lund notes. In addition, microneedling requires little to no downtime, as some patients experience only redness of the treated skin for one to two days following the treatment. Most clients return to their daily routine following the appointment, Lund says. Results appear in two to three months, and Lund recommends at least three microneedling treatments per year, scheduled four to six weeks apart. “You can have up to six treatments a year, so many clients do a treatment about every two months,” he says. Patient response has been overwhelmingly positive, Lund notes before adding: “The hardest part is the mild sunburn after the first treatment, but patients immediately feel their skin seems to be smoother, and after two to three months, they get the longer-term effect.” For those seeking to maintain smoother, younger-looking skin from head to toe far into the future, Lund says the scope of microneedling treatments is only in the beginning stages. “There are going to be more advancements that will be worthwhile in the future,” he notes. “Stay tuned!” Ridenour Plastic Surgery, 12460 Olive Blvd., 2nd Floor, Creve Coeur, 314-878-8600, ridenourplasticsurgery.com St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, 17300 N. The restaurant, which takes its name from the nearby River des Peres, comes from father-and-son duo Fatmir and Aurel Bardho. The Albania natives work with head chef Phillip Paris, who is of Greek descent, to offer a unique menu that blends American dishes with Mediterranean influences, as noted. “I’ve been in this industry all my life,” says Aurel Bardho, who started working in St. Louis restaurants as a teenager after moving to the city in 1999. “It’s what I know best. Story: The Rev. Stephen Kumalo is committed to caring for the members of his tiny Anglican church in the town of Ndotsheni, South Africa, in 1949. The apartheid policy of the government discourages mingling between the ruling whites and subjugated blacks, but the priest nonetheless has befriended Arthur Jarvis, a white attorney and son of bigoted plantation owner James Jarvis. A year has passed since the priest and his wife, Grace, have seen their son, Absalom, who left the village to work in the mines near Johannesburg. When the priest is contacted by his brother, John, who is embarrassed by the reputation of their sister in the big city, the priest agrees to visit her while checking on Absalom. When the priest arrives, his sister rejects his suggestion that she return to Ndotsheni, but she asks him to care for her young son, Alex, which he does. The priest also learns from his cynical brother that Absalom, having been released from prison after serving time for a crime, is living with his pregnant girlfriend, Irina. The priest finds Irina, but learns that Absalom has been involved in a fatal burglary with John’s son, Matthew, and another man named Johannes. They had convinced Absalom to bring a pistol, which the nervous young man fired when the owner of the home unexpectedly appeared. That owner, who was killed by Absalom, was Arthur Jarvis. Although Matthew and Johannes lie in court about their involvement in the crime, Absalom tells the truth. In consequence, he is convicted and sentenced to death, which devastates the priest to the point that his own faith shatters. At the hour of Absalom’s execution, James Jarvis pays a visit to the priest, contact with him as each man mourns the death of a son. Highlights: Union Avenue Opera closes its 2018 season with a moving and beautifully performed presentation of Kurt Weill’s final work for the stage. Other Info: Based on the 1948 novel Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, the hybrid show Lost in the Stars includes operatic elements fused with basic Broadway melodies, traditional African music, jazz and blues in Weill’s complex and diverse composition. Lost in the Stars is rarely performed, so much so that I can’t recall another local presentation. That’s a grievous shame because not only is the music affecting and the story compelling, but also the production addresses racial tensions that exist to this day. For its production of Lost in the Stars, Union Avenue Opera received a $25,000 grant from the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music. The troupe enlisted the invaluable services of Shaun Patrick Tubbs, a 2015 Kurt Weill Fellowship in Opera Direction recipient, to make his impressive directorial debut with the St. Louis opera company. Tubbs sustains a gripping flow to Anderson’s wellwrought tale over its two briskly played acts, which are
complemented by a stirring reading of the Weill score by artistic director Scott Schoonover and members of the troupe’s polished orchestra. Operatic voices are relatively few, but those are realized as exquisite musical instruments by the likes of Roderick George as Leader, the narrator of sorts for this tragic tale, who opens the show with a strong resonance that carries throughout. Kenneth Overton’s commanding baritone lends gravity and compassion to his finely etched role of the Rev. Kumalo. Krysty Swann infuses Irina’s part with a crystal-clear voice and equally fine acting, while Melody Wilson’s vocal strengths accentuate the role of a village woman named Linda. Reginald Pierre delivers a powerful and persuasive turn as the cunning John, who works to rally his black brethren to resist settling for peasant wages while their white employers make all the profits. Carl Overly Jr. and Abraham Shaw convey the casual duplicity of Matthew and Johannes in contrast to the poignant portrayal by Myke Andrews of the griefstricken Absalom, whose moral core won’t allow him to commit perjury, with grave results. You may not get another chance to see a production of the rarely viewed Lost in the Stars, especially one as handsome as this. Don’t miss it.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne
2015 RÖBLLER VINEYARD, VIDAL BLANC RESERVE – NEW HAVEN, MISSOURI Grape: 100% Vidal Blanc Owners/Winemakers: Robert and Lois Mueller, owners/Jerry Mueller, winemaker Aged: Slow cold-fermented with eight months in new American oak Approximate Retail Price: $19 TASTING NOTES: Color: Bright with a straw yellow hue Aroma: Ripe pineapple, honeydew and floral with a hint of citrus Taste: Rich mouthfeel rounded out with perfect acidity and tropical fruits and a pleasant, lingering finish

harvested the grapes once they’d achieved a particular ripeness. They then cold-soaked the grapes for 24 hours before destemming, thereafter using a specific yeast strain from the Alsace region of northeastern France for initial fermentation. The wine next underwent malolactic fermentation to add a creamier texture and, after that, aged in new American oak barrels for 20 months, with the aging involving stirring the lees (the dregs or sediment). This meticulous treatment resulted in an amazing, easy-drinking Missouri white wine with good body, a rich but not overpowering creamy texture, and a long, smooth finish. Food Pairings: This wine pairs nicely with crabcakes, creamy pasta with shrimp, chicken with lemon-butter sauce, and soft, creamy cheeses.

lthough its residents recognize the rich history and culture surrounding Missouri wine country, a common misconception holds that Show-Me State wines tend to be sweet, even though dry wines have always played a part
in vinification here. As a prime example, consider Röbller Vineyard. Located in New Haven, Missouri, roughly 60 miles due west of Ladue, between Washington and Hermann, Röbller Vineyard started in 1988 when Robert and Lois Mueller purchased the property and began planting select local varieties of grapes on separate blocks. The land itself contributes enormously to the wines’ high quality, of course, as all good wine starts in the vineyard. The vineyard here occupies gentle, south-facing slopes, which allow constant east-to-west solar exposure, water drainage, soil quality, wind, elevation and so forth. Jerry Mueller, the couple’s son and the current winemaker, uses his background in French winemaking when approaching Missouri wines. Primarily, he considers them to be “terroir-driven,” meaning he relies on the influence of the terroir and farming on the grapes, then takes a fastidious, minimalist approach in making the wines. A
striking, family-friendly restaurant and lounge, The Frisco Barroom opened just last month in Webster Groves under the oversight of John Barr and his wife, Kelley Hall-Barr (who also own the city’s Civil Alchemy and formerly owned and operated k.hall designs). A stately presence, the establishment looms near Big Bend Boulevard’s intersection with North Old Orchard Avenue. Despite its name, it has nothing directly to do either with California’s famed City by the Bay or with the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, the locally based railroad bearing the short
form Frisco as its sobriquet and operating in nine Midwestern and Southern states till 1980. “We owned some buildings on the street, and a lot of them are historic buildings that have been here for over 100 years – and they’re all right along where the train station for the Frisco line used to be,” Barr explains. “And these buildings are here because that train station was here.” Barr’s building both wears its age well and testifies to an extensive renovation during the past year. Its exterior incorporates a handsome molded metal-and-wood façade in elegant black, a good deal of pristine St. Louis brick and dark
a turkey-Brie-chutney, a pastrami, a French dip, a grilled cheese, a Reuben, a vegetarian, a salsiccia and a grilled chicken. All sandwiches, whether burgers or non-, come with one side from among a variety of offerings, including a potatoand-cheese casserole for a small extra charge. For potential desserts, The Frisco Barroom presents a seasonal fruit tart, DerbyPie (or something similar to that registered trademark), a chocolate torte, Key lime pie and selections from Webster Groves’ Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream. The Frisco Barroom’s libation menu seeks to sate nontipplers with various sodas, juices and other whistle-wetters. It also features a respectable selection of beers – a dozen on tap, accompanied by more than a dozen bottled and aluminum options. For oenophiles, moreover, it offers eight red wines, a quintet of whites and a single rosé by the glass and bottle alike; another 10 vintages available solely by the bottle; and five more sips available in varying quantities under the rubric “Sparkling.” Finally, the libation menu includes 18 signature cocktails, among them variations on not only the Aviation – one of the first bona fide legacies to return from mixological limbo more than a decade ago – but also modern speed-rail standbys like the bloody mary and the margarita. Among such signature cocktails, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur mellows the grapefruit juice in the Frisco Greyhound and accompanies Absolut Ruby Red vodka and a lime garnish. Similarly, the Frisco Collins redeems one of today’s most cloying highballs by incorporating Hendrick’s Gin, Yellow Chartreuse liqueur, fresh lime juice, cranberry bitters and Topo Chico mineral water, garnished with a lime twist. In short, one can’t help suspecting that hungry, thirsty erstwhile railroad workers and passengers – whether traveling the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway or some other line – would regard The Frisco Barroom as something far more than a mere whistle-stop. “We’re extremely grateful how many people are coming out and supporting us – and it makes it even more of a goal to make things better,” Barr concludes. “It just puts that much more pressure on our team, in a good way, to do it good and to do it better.” The Frisco Barroom, 8110 Big Bend Blvd., Webster Groves, 314-455-1090, thefriscostl.com

gray slate siding. Its interior, meanwhile, boasts 20-foot stamped-tin ceilings in black, wooden flooring interspersed with white-and-black honeycomb tile and – appropriately enough, given the establishment’s moniker – a wide, wooden bar top polished to a high gloss along with an impressive 12-foot-tall wood backbar, again in black. Towering windows at the front of the structure balance the generally muted palette with an effusion of natural light. The establishment reportedly seats more than 200 customers among the barroom as such, the downstairs dining room, a back patio and a smaller upstairs area. On one recent rainy afternoon less than a month after it made its debut, The Frisco Barroom was packed within an hour of opening with guests across the spectrum – singletons, couples, friend groups and families with young tots. “The food menu comes from several places,” Barr relates. “It’s rustic American food that I think is simple and familiar to a lot of people, and my chef even calls it ‘Midwestern soul food.’ It’s a lot of just classic, familiar dishes. And we wanted to be able to do simple things well.” At present, the establishment, which opens for dinner Tuesdays through Sundays, presents a limited menu, with a full menu of entrées and lunch service projected for the future, as well as the possibility of opening seven days a week. “As soon as we’re happy with the level of quality of what we’re currently doing, we plan on expanding,” Barr says. “We’re in no rush – we’re extremely happy with where it is right now. We look at this as a long-term project.” Barr adds that the entire team has been working long hours each day to elevate all levels of The Frisco Barroom from good to great. In the meantime, though, its culinary offerings should satisfy almost any diner’s desires. For snacks, the food menu lists smoked whitefish dip, house-made beef jerky, deviled eggs and smoked nuts. Its small plates range from grilled chicken wings to hummus to poutine to tempura-battered cauliflower. Pierogis (potato and cheese) and pasties (Cornish and vegetarian) adorn the food menu as well, as do four “boards,” charcuterie characterized with quasi-vocational designations (that is, Fisherman’s, Farmer’s, Hunter’s and Gatherer’s). Of soups and salads, meanwhile, the food menu includes a harvest salad with arugula, dried cherries, candied pecans, shaved fennel and fried goat cheese with herb-balsamic dressing. Last but scarcely least, the food menu lists two burgers, a single and a double, with build-your-own additions available. Other sandwiches complement the burgers:
